4 out of 5 stars THE book to buy for young musical theatre fans!.......2007-03-31

If your youngster is looking to audition for musicals, or if he or she just wants to sing for fun, this is a great book to buy! The songs are not too difficult, but they are still "real" musical songs. This isn't a book full of songs sang by cartoon characters! The accompaniment tracks are alright, too. I teach theatre and musical theatre to middle school students, and I've used songs out of this book a lot. I highly recommend it for the beginner.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Collection for Young Singers.......2007-01-23

The book itself is a nice compilation of songs from well-known shows. However, the CD music is not as good as I'd expect for this caliber of collections. Instead of Piano accompaniment, it would have been so much better if multiple instruments were used.

4 out of 5 stars Useful book!.......2007-01-04

I have used this book with many of my younger voice students and it is always a hit with them. Some of the songs are hard, but some are really easy, so it is a good book to use with beginners, and accomodates them as they progress. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars a really great songbook!.......2000-06-22

a couple monthes ago my singing teacher sold me her extra copy of this songbook and ever since then I've been doing almost nothing except for songs from this book! I've done "Castle on a Cloud" "I Won't Grow Up" etc.. I highly recomend this book!

Terrific book of Broadway favorites. Bought it for my teenage daughter and she loved it!

4 out of 5 stars New edition.......2006-07-06

The first edition has 27 more songs than the second one(which I bought). I was a little dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars BEST COLLECTION OF BROADWAY SONGS.......2001-01-17

THIS BOOK IS THE GREATEST COLLECTION OF BROADWAY CLASSICS I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE LIST OF SONGS, GO TO ... AND SEARCH FOR THE TITLE. THE BINDING IS A SPIRAL BINDING WHICH HAS THE TENDANCY TO FALL APART AFTER USE (I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE). IT HAS MANY OF THE POPULAR THEMES FROM CLASSIC BROADWAY SHOWS AND THERE ARE GOOD ARRANGEMENTS OF MOST OF THESE SONGS. I WOULD SAY IT IS AN SLIGHTLY ADVANCED PIANO LEVEL. I USE THE BOOK FOR THEATRE ORGAN AND THERE'S PLENTY OF SPOTS FOR IMPROVISING AND REARRANGING. I DON'T KNOW OF A BETTER BOOK OF BROADWAY CLASSICS IN PUBLICATION, SO I GIVE IT A 4 OUT OF 5 (BECAUSE OF THE BINDING PROBLEM I HAD)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Definitive.......2000-07-09

I bought this book years ago on the request of my vocal coach. It has proved to include most of the classic songs from broadway that a singer in the musical theatre could hope for. A few downfalls are that the more obscure songs are not likely to be found in this collection, and songs from more recent productions are not included. I think Les Miserables is the most current inclusion in this collection. To conclude, however, this is a great source for all the traditional great broadway classics, and I would highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Shirley Temple.......2006-05-02

they put shirley on the dvd. Finally, i'm happy they put her on dvd. It's so cute and everything that happened to shirley in these movies. Shirley will always be America's (true/real) sweetheart. she's the true star. Every single girl has tried to imitate her, but she always was/is number #1!

Curly Top- is adorable. It's about this little orphan, who likes to be a nuisance to everyone. With memorable songs like A.C. en mi S.
Heidi- Is a great character and she makes that girl walk and everything. The monkey was cute.
Little Miss Broadway- awww this is so cute.

1 out of 5 stars incorrect video format.......2006-03-04

Despite ordering from a European country the D.V.D.set as supplied is in the NTSC format and I have not been able to view. Can the set be supplied in PAL format,as in use in Ireland and so as to able to view in this country. My grandchildren have been most disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Classics.......2005-12-28

I am so glad that they decided to bring Shirley Temple FINALLY to DVD- and this time the quality is amazing on the DVD considering how old the films are. Both versions are available to watch on the DVD- black and white or the new colorized version based on your own liking....

There is a wide range of Shirley from those adorable years when, Shirley was nothing more than a bundle of joy that sung and dance her way into America's heart to those tween years when Fox was trying to show her off as a real actress. Still there is not a BAD movie in this set.

In Curly Top you see all that remarkable charm as she performs that classic "Animal Crackers In My Soup" and does that sweet tap dance on the piano at the end to the title song. The movie plays out as Shirley is an orphan at orphanage- beloved by all there... well, when she catches the eye of an investor of the orphanage when he visits. He falls in love with Shirley and decides to adopt her. Only problem- her older sister will not allow the adoption to take place unless he adopts her as well. Well, he makes the decision to adopt them both-only secretly even making up a character "Hireman Jones"- so that they both can come to expect the pleasures in life. Well, when he starts falling for Mary- Shirley's sister things get complicated. But, finally work their way out so that they can become one big happy family. "Curly Top" showcases off some amazing tap numbers and a ton of charm when Shirley was just a youngster starting out.

"Little Miss Broadway" is full of song and dance- and has my personal favorite tap dance scene at the end to the title number. Filmed during those difficult tween years for Shirley. The movie is set in NYC Shirley is a recently adopted orphan who now, lives at a hotel full of under-appreciated actors. Well, their landlord is not thirlled with the colorful characters working at the hotel from a band, to a magician who has a pet penguin, to a miget dance trio... Well, the land lady who Shirley refers to as "Ms. Pumpkin" trys to close down the hotel and throw out all the actors on the street she is one for one HUGE legal battle which ends up with a ton of memorable song and dance numbers. One of Shirleys under=appreciated movies this one NOT to miss!

Heidi based upon the classic book is a movie that any non-Shirley Temple fan will enjoy. The acting is increadiable in this movie and Shirley shows off some real acting strengths the scene in which she is begging the police not to take her grandfather away always makes me want to cry.

This is a PERFECT gift for any little girl in your family. Sit down with your family and enjoy the magic of Shirley Temple.

4 out of 5 stars Great set for Shirley fans!.......2005-12-05

I love Shirley Temple movies, and had VHS tapes of a few. But when the tapes started degrading, I went in search of DVD editions. I prefer the original black & white, and when Fox released a few DVDs a couple years ago (with both colour and black & white), I bought "Heidi". The black & white quality was awful! In fact, it looked like they'd just used the badly colourized version and removed the colour. I was very disappointed.

So when I heard that these movies were being rereleased, I eagerly (but a little warily) ordered them. The quality on these is amazing! The black & white versions have been restored very well (which you can clearly see when you compare them with the included old black & white trailers for other Shirley Temple films). Even the colourized versions are quite acceptable. Whereas in the olden days (the 1980s) the colourizing process often left inexact coloured halos around people and objects, this new process is very precise. I noticed individual hairs that were coloured, without any of that nasty halo. The whites of people's eyes are actually white, too, not flesh-toned.

"Little Miss Broadway" is one of my favourites, and I was thrilled with the quality of the film. The older colourized versions were too bright (as if someone had turned up the brightness and contrast on them), almost obscuring facial features in places. This new release is very much how I imagine the original must have been. Clear, a little grainy, and perfectly charming.

I don't care much about the trailers, but what I would like to have seen (especially for this set) was the deleted scene from "Little Miss Broadway". I believe it is available on a compilation DVD somewhere, but it would have been nice to see it included in the actual movie it was taken from.

I've already ordered the second 3-disc set for my collection. These movies are great!

5 out of 5 stars Quit complaining about the trailers, enjoy the films.......2005-09-30

I wish the people complaining about the trailers would stop being so trivial and take the time to enjoy the films themselves. Sheesh! We ought to be grateful that Shirley Temple is now being appreciated by the studio and her films are appearing on DVD in small bunches, and even better, in RESTORED form! "Heidi" which was previously reissued on DVD a couple of years ago, wasn't THAT bad on DVD, but now it's even better and improved, albeit in some scenes it's hard to tell the difference.

I've already commented before about how Shirley is a national treasure and it's a shame that it's taken this long for her films to be taken seriously and be released on DVD. Hopefully, ALL of her films are eventually going to be restored for DVD.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "You'll never turn the vineger to jam, mein Herr".......2003-07-18

I have to be completely honest with you, I think the love story behind Cabaret is extremely unnerving, even grotesque, However, I love the music, the music is beautiful.

Although I like all of the songs, I do not think the singing from any of the productions can compete with the explosive performance combination of Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli in the film version of the show.

Thankfully the book does not make you choose one production over the others, you get all three, and for a very low price.

The book has three glossy pages in the front, each representing a different rendition of Cabaret with brightly colored pictures. On the bottem of each of these pages are the Tony or Academy Awards that were achieved by that specific production.

A Small note: The musical Cabaret has won 12 Tonys and 8 Academy awards in its lifetime.

The rest of the book is music, except for the chapter or show titles, which have black and white pictures from each production.
The music is great, however, it is the orchestral scores from the origional productions translated into piano, so not all of the music is there.

You could compare it to "Raphsody in Blue" being performed on one piano rather than by a whole orhcestra, there are many notes missing when you try to put an orchestra into one piano.

This is why I gave it 4 star. My music teacher has the music score from the movie for piano, and from seeing that sheet music, I can say that if you buy it from the productions individualy, you will have more accuracy in your music and lyrics, since each production has its own variation.

In this book there is only one version of "Money,Money,Money" the movie version, and only one version of "Willkommen", the origional 1966 version. The problem with this is that "Money, Money, Money" is very differant in the new broadway production, and "Willkommen" is done differently in each production too, but only one version of each song is availiable in this book.

I am still thrilled with the book, it's a wonderful addition to any music collection. It is harder music than your average broadway musical, so if you cannot play the piano, and do not plan on learning, I would advise you not to get this book.

"Maybe This Time" is my favorite song in the book, a beautiful slow ballad. "Mein Heir" and "Money, Money, Money" are next to it; they are wonderful songs.

The songs from the revival are obsolete in comparison to the earlier numbers, although, many of the numbers cut from the origional 1966 production are very worth while.

The 1966 cut production number that have been added into the book are what make this book worth buying, they are fabulous numbers that never really had a day in the sun.

I am still tempted to give the book 5 stars because it is wonderful music. If you like Cabaret at all, its music, or Kander and Ebb, its the perfect book to have, not just as a collecters item to sit on the shelf, but as a book you can play from all the time.

"What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a cabaret, old chum,- come to the cabaret-."

5 out of 5 stars 'Cabaret' fans only..........2000-02-12

As you might guess - for the title above - I'm a huge, I mean, HUGE, 'Cabaret' fan and collector. So, of course, I found this book delightful, but - taking the risk of making a fool out of myself - I must warn to anyone who doesn't know it that these are the scores of the songs. I bought it thinking that it was something else - I don't know exactly what -, and I don't regret it, but it's not what I expected it to be... Thanks God I have a pianist friend so he can play it for me :-)Anyway, it's a must-have for every 'Cabaret-collector' out there.

5 out of 5 stars The best Cabaret songbook available, a must have for any fan.......1999-08-19

This is the finest of all song and sheet music books from the Broadway show and film version of "Cabaret". It contains not only every musical number from most productions and the film, it gives background information and contains great photos as well. For anyone looking for the music from "Cabaret" or anyone wanting a look inside what the experience of "Cabaret" is, this is the book to buy. A necessity for any actor or "Cabaret" lover.

        Book Description

With the founding of the Shubert Organization some ninety years ago, the Shubert brothers set the stage for Broadway as we know it today. Indeed, their name has become virtually synonymous with the Great White Way. The heart of Manhattan's theatre district--Forty-forth and Forty-fifth
Streets between Broadway and Eighth Avenue--is lined with monuments to their extraordinary careers, including the Imperial, Majestic, Booth, Plymouth, and Broadhurst theatres and, of course, Shubert Alley itself. Legendary for their eccentric behavior and their uncanny ability to turn a profit even
during the industry's toughest times, the Shuberts are part and parcel of Broadway's colorful lore.
In The Shuberts of Broadway, Brooks McNamara combs the holdings of the newly created Shubert Archive--a remarkable collection of some four million papers, playbills, architectural plans, photographs, press clips, scripts, costume designs, letters, and other Shubert memorabilia--to re-create
the lives of Sam, Lee, and J. J. Shubert. In lively prose and more than 200 fully captioned illustrations, McNamara follows the Shuberts from their early years, when the teen-aged Sam became head of the box office at the Wieting Theatre in downtown Syracuse, through the building of their empire and
the Broadway boom of the 1920s (when the Shuberts owned or operated 104 theatres and booked nearly a thousand more), and on to their last days, when their producing careers ended amid controversy.
We see the often-stormy relations among the frail, charismatic Sam (who died in a train crash in 1905), the aloof Lee (dubbed "The Wooden Indian"), and their mercurial brother J.J., and their collective, continual battle against the Syndicate that dominated the theatre scene. Here we learn
the real stories behind the popular entertainment that rolled off their theatrical assembly line and earned them fame: La Belle Paree, which featured Al Jolson at the Winter Garden; The Passing Show, a "girlie" revue that was full of such talents as Ed Wynn, Fred and Adele Astaire, George Jessel,
and a chorus girl named Lucille Le Sueur, who later became known as Joan Crawford; Blossom Time, one of operetta's greatest hits; and The Student Prince, a theatrical bonanza composed by the great Sigmund Romberg.
Filled with real-life plots, intrigues, and characters that capture the imagination, the story of the Shuberts is every bit as entertaining as the Broadway they helped to create.
