Book Description
So, you finally got that promotion. You’re the boss now. The supervisor. The manager. The captain. The taskmaster. Those days of taking orders, running errands, and clock-watching are over. As exciting as all this might seem, once the rush of the promotion is over, you might be scratching your head wondering exactly what to do. Being the boss is never easy, but it's twice as hard for a woman. It seems like there's no middle ground. Either you're the dragon lady who rules with an iron fist or the mousey girl who gets drowned out at every meeting. When a woman wields authority and dares to make tough decisions, how often is the "B-word" bandied about by her employees? How can she strike that balance between pushover and dictator?
Fear not. You can do the job. All you need is a little helpful advice to send you on your way. Whether you supervise two as a shift manager or lord over an entire corporate empire, Caitlin Friedman and Kim Yorio will show you how to step gracefully into your new position of power. They’ll teach you how to motivate your team without alienating them, how to delegate without feeling guilty, how to deal with office politics and how to handle evaluations, promotions, and even firings. And for those of you who are already running the show, they can help you become the mentor
your employees deserve.
Inside, there are self-assessment questionnaires to help you find out where you land on the bitch or wimp scale; interviews with prominent female bosses, human-resources directors, and therapists; and advice from a whole host of experts. In addition, there are funny and informative checklists and tips to make sure you’re the Good Witch around the office and not the Big Bitch. And, most important, Caitlin and Kim will teach you the secrets to owning your role and loving it. You’ve earned your promotion, so enjoy it!

A life-saver!.......2007-10-04
Several months ago I found myself a newly promoted manager overseeing several of my former peers. Though thrilled at the promotion, I had no idea how difficult the transition would be. I stumbled upon The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a [...]), and it was like reading the handbook on how to navigate through my exact situation. From employee evaluations to office politics, it covers every aspect of the very delicate (and often sticky) manager-employee relationship. Coupled with its light and pleasant tone, this book was an absolute life-saver for me. It helped me get perspective and see the humor in most (if not all) situations. Definitely a must-have for every girl trying to find her way through the labyrinth that is the business world.
Great Advice!.......2007-09-06
Awesome book! I also recommend another book that I love - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
Easy Read.......2007-07-30
I liked this book as it was easy to read and gain tips and pointers. Time is always a factor in my life and I liked this book as it got to the point. It has helped me deal with some issues I was having at work as a manager. I recommend it if you are wanting to improve yourself as a manager.
Provocative, powerful, practical.......2007-07-10
There is still, today, a public distaste for ambitious women: ambitious men are "go-getters"; ambitious women (esp. bosses) are "bitches". The Girl's Guide is loaded with practical advice and stories from the trenches reassuring accomplished women who love their work with a grand passion that they are not lone chimeras (a.k.a. "bitches"); that they can inspire, motivate, and lead--including making hard choices--with integrity, elegance, and grace, all the while keeping their eye on profitability and simultaneously treating others with decency and respect. Dr. Debra Condren, founder, Women's Business Alliance; author: amBITCHous: (def.) A Woman Who: 1. A little empowerring/A little insulting.......2007-06-28
I'm on the fence about this one, there are times when I felt like putting it down and others when I just let go and soaked in the advice.

Really gets you in a zone.......2007-09-24
The first time I listened to this, I really did go into a deep trance. I was very surprised at how effective it was in relaxing me. I haven't actually lost weight but I don't listen to it everyday. Thought it was much better than other products out there that do similar things.
It's ok..........2007-09-04
Well, I was definitely skeptical about using a hypnosis CD, but I thought if anything it would instill some positive reinforcements. It is a soothing CD to listen to, and I would think of some of the key phrases throughout my day, but other than that, I think it would be better used for relaxation rather than weight loss.
Effective.......2007-07-04
This CD has definitely changed my attitude about food. I find myself making healthier choices. I also find myself thinking before I eat, determining whether I'm actually hungry or just bored or stressed out. I would have given this CD 5 stars if the music on the first track wasn't so cheesy. Otherwise, this product is definitely a great investment for my health.
OK, but Mind Over Platter is better for me........2007-06-26
This is the first time I've bought a hypnosis CD. I read a book on self-hypnosis some 30+ years ago and dabbled a bit with it, but now that I need to lose 50+ lbs (I lost 75 lbs 7 years ago, but have gained most of it back), I haven't been able to sustain the concentration to do it. So I got this CD, the Mind Over Platter CD by Rosa Smith-Montanaro, and a general health-oriented CD from the Beverly Hills Hypnosis series. I also got the book, Monsters and Magical Sticks: There's No Such Thing as Hypnosis? by Heller and Steele.
This one is the first CD that I listened to.
The music that starts and ends the sessions is kind of 70's hokey, but is not present for most of the session. The speaker has an accent (maybe Australian or South African?), which is slightly distracting but nothing I couldn't get used to. There were a couple of places where I didn't understand what he was saying, but one of them I figured out, and the other was one of the "subliminal" suggestions that I recognized on the CD insert afterwards. In either case, on future listenings inability to understand wouldn't be an issue.
My biggest problems were 1) I found his visualization path didn't match my own (for example, he suggested seeing yourself in a mirror, whereupon I saw myself naked or in my underwear; then he added "in your nice new outfit", which of course clashed with my own image); 2) for some reason, I found myself arguing with him in my thoughts - I can't remember even about what; and 3) his voice made me feel sluggish and heavy -- exactly the opposite of what I know works for me when losing weight.
I did finish the session awake and alert and with no desire to eat, but I've been getting some of that over the course of the last week just in anticipation of the CDs' arrival. Plus, I've only listened to the CD once, since I so much preferred the Mind Over Platter CD.
I Love This CD.......2007-03-19
I am 70 years old with almost 150 lbs. to lose. I lost 33 lbs. with a popular diet program last year, but my hunger kicked in and I gained about 10 lbs back in three months. Having tried every diet I can find unsuccessfully, I was desparate to find something to curb the hunger. The constant insatiable hunger is the main reason I did not resume the latest program. I was even rejected for gastric surgery due to previous other surgeries and my age. I know the source of the hunger is in my head but couldn't find any way to stop it.
I had purchased this cd several years ago but put it away as I didn't believe in hypnosis, but as I was so desparate, I found it last week, put it on and lo and behold, after one session, my appetite has been curbed to a great degree. I lost 1-1/2 lbs. in one day. I am no longer able to just binge on anything I can find to stop the constant hunger. I eat a few bites and am satisfied for quite a while. I use the cd once a day to reinforce what he is programming into my subconscious.
I am so impressed that I ordered 3 more of his cd's on finances, etc. Hope I am as successful with them. I love his voice and accent and find them very soothing.
Book Description
Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Scripts and Strategies in Hypnotherapy have been combined to create the single most comprehensive source of hypnotherapy scripts and strategies that can be used by hypnotherapists to build a successful franework for almost any therapy session.
Customer Reviews:
Great content, very practical........2007-03-08
I am an NLP coach and I found this book really helpful. Lots of practical advice which includes case taking as well as scripts. I am getting great feedback and results from my clients! I recommend it highly!
Scripts and strategies .......2005-01-18
Allen collates both his previous volumes of collected Scripts and Strategies in Hypnotherapy together in this work. Many inductions are included and a few deepeners. Rightly, most of the work is concerned with the business of therapy itself. Many situation-specific ego-strengtheners are included, as well as sections on common issues such as pain management and anxiety. The ever-popular smoking-cessation, fear-management and weight-control receive large chapters of their own which I have found invaluable in my Central-Manchester, Wilmslow and Romiley clinics.
Previous reviews of the two separate volumes have always touted the scripts as off-the-peg verbatim scripts and frameworks around which to base a bespoke item for the client. However some of the scripts come over as a little too specific for undiluted use, causing me to go through with a pencil making notes.
Part eleven is entitled Therapy Strategies and includes tips for dealing with abreaction, age progression, re-framing, anchors etc. and each of these tactics is dealt with very well. However that is what they are; tactics (or gambits), not strategies. Therapeutic strategy involves various decisions such as "when is it useful to switch from a behaviouristic approach to a classic-dynamic one?" or "should I address the symptom or the cause (or both) in this particular case?" or "how can I most usefully model the direction(s) of causation between the different aspects of this complaint? " etc.
The majority of the scripts, allude to and reflect various strategies as, necessarily so, each script must be based on some paradigm or another. The only exception being the smoking cessation pages where the strategy and paradigm are discussed specifically, (e.g. Aversion vs. Coercion?)
Due to the name of the book, I expected to see some alternative potential conceptions of the nature of each presentation along with their respective interventions, but that's not what the book is all about. The formatting decisions of choosing a large font, and starting each new script on a new page, strongly hint at the book's ultimate purpose. It looks clean and is easily read allowing easy, quick access in the consulting room. After a short introduction to hypnosis it's just cover to cover useful scripts. An index would be welcome, as would be a more complete synopsis of each script, but ultimately the complete re-formatting of the two volumes of `Scripts and Tactics in Hypnotherapy' has made it much more convenient and better value. Now offering twice as many scripts per pound (or Dollar)!
It's to the point.......2004-06-02
It's to the point, tells you what you need to know without all the filler stuff. Lots and lots of scripts. This one is a keeper. Great information to the hypnotherapist. If you are not using this book in your office then get it. Everything that you need is in this book. I don't know were to start, it has everything for any kind of session and even some that I have never seen.

Life's Little Instruction Book From Mothers To Daughters
ASIN: 1558538356 |
Book Description
H. Jackson Brown, Jr. originally wrote Life's Little Instruction Book™ as a gift for his son who was leaving home to begin his freshman year in college. Brown says, "I read years ago that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but to provide a road map, and I wanted to provide him with what I had learned about living a happy and rewarding life." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is a guidebook that gently points the way to happiness and fulfillment. The observations are direct, simple, and as practical as an umbrella.
"But it's not just for young people," says Brown. "Most of us already know how to live a successful and purposeful life. We know we should be more understanding and thoughtful, more responsible, courageous and appreciative. It's just that we sometimes need reminding." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is that reminder, as well as the perfect gift for a relative or a friend who needs encouragement at any time of the year.
- Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.
- Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference.
- Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures.
- Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks softly.
- Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.
- Be kinder than necessary.
- Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
- Commit yourself to constant self-improvement.
- Don't major in minor things.
- Never cut what can be untied.
Since its debut in 1991, Life's Little Instruction Book™ has revolutionized the publishing industry. This little plaid book, which has been embraced the world over, has sold more than nine million copies, spent more than two years atop the New York Times bestseller list, and has been translated into 33 languages. Though originally written as a gift from a father to a son, its simple message has been enjoyed by men and women of all ages around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Small Book Great Value!.......2007-08-30
Very insightful thoughts that teaches a lot of things.
A great buy for such a small book!
Delightful and full of practical wisdom.......2007-06-30
This is the second volume in a series. It is delightful, easy to read and full of practical wisdom. It can be read in one sitting. The suggestions(512) are short, one or two sentences and were written by Brown to his son. The gems of wisdom are what you typically think of as being handed down from generation to generation.
It should not be read an stuffed in the bookshelf. While we probably have heard or know most of these bits of wisdom, we do need to be reminded of the thoughts. So it is helpful to read them ever so often. The more you read them, the deeper your understanding and appreciation of these truths.
A few of my favorites:
Act with courtesy and fairness regardless of how others treat you. Don't let them determine your response.
Spend your time and energy creating, not critizing.
Keep your private thoughts private.
Treat your employees with the same respect you give your clients.
When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
The book is entertaining and enlightening. Well worth reading a few times a year.
Great to Give as a Gift........2007-04-16
This should be a definite buy. Not necessarily for yourself (although you should read it), but as a gift to give to other people. I received this book as a gift from my mom many years ago and just recently found it amongst a box of books I had forgotten about. Many of the little bits of wisdom are just as fun to read now as they were then.
It contains all the one-liner wisdom you would expect from a loving parent or anyone trying to pass along their good intentions. It's definitely not a book you just sit down to read, as it is a little 5x7 booklet with 5-10 "one liners" per page, but a little reminder you could keep in a special spot and just glance at once in a while. I have taken mine out of the box to do just that.
The thing I really liked as I reread some of the book is that much of the "wisdom" can be pretty different than the run of the mill "feel good advice" you would normally expect. It apparently was written by a person who's sole intention was to impart this wisdom to his child. If that type of intention was written into this little booklet it's got to be good enough to give to others.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.
An OK book........2007-04-05
This book was mildly useful. Much of it was smarmy trash but there were a few tidbits that were worthwhile. For me, it is entertaining to read books like this.
Life's Little Instruction Book.......2006-06-30
I had previously purchased this book several years ago. As a former high school teacher I shared the "One" line notes with my students. This sharing became a routine my students looked forward to see when I posted them. With that in mind, I purchased a copy for my granddaughter for a graduation present.
After this purchase, Amazon informed me of the book that contained the first three editions of Life's Little Instructions. I slso bought tha edition.

I use at least one of these scripts with every client that I have. I addition, the way the book is organized into induction scripts, direct & metaphor scripts, and a termination script, allows you to select different inductions from your own work or from another script book and still use the direct and termination scripts in this book that others do not have. I have yet to find a termination script as useful as this one.
Great "patter" revitalizer!!!.......2006-02-23
After 20 years as a hypnotherapist--to much of my induction and suggestion talk had become--automatic. This book has put new energy--new emotion into my sessions.
Expanded Edition - Much Bigger Than Original.......2004-10-27
This second edition of the book is about one third bigger than the original edition. It has all the contents the first book has, plus much more.
The book has a a variety of inductions, emerging scripts and scripts for dealing with assortment of situations a hypnotherapist may encounter in his practice. Most scripts contain metaphors which may work more effectively in one-on-one practice if they are adapted to the one's that may be more meaningful for the client.
Here's a sample script from this collection:
SWEET DREAMS SCRIPT
Tonight, perhaps tomorrow too,
your unconscious mind
can give you a dream,
a very special dream
that clarifies the problem
indicates the source perhaps,
but tells you quite clearly
how to solve that problem now.
And each night afterwards,
until you understand it,
until you decide to do it or not,
that dream can return to you
in one form or another.
And every day
as you go about your business,
your unconscious can find something,
some thought, perception, awareness,
a taste perhaps or a sensation,
or even a color,
that seems familiar
and reminds you of something,
reminds you fo what your unconscious mind
is trying to tell you,
until you fully understand
and use that understanding for you.

If I Could Own Only One Hypnotherapy Book, It'd Be This One.......2007-08-16
If I could own only one hypnotherapy book, it would be Dave Elman's "Hypnotherapy." First published in 1964, Elman's book continues to exert an influence, whether credited or not, on authors such as M. Gerald Edelstein, Roger P. Allen, and the late William W. Hewitt. The confidence and enthusiasm the author conveyed in these pages are utterly infectious. I can only imagine what it was like to attend one of his seminars. A former stage hypnotist (among several other careers), Elman developed a training course in hypnosis for doctors and dentists. This text derives from transcripts of those trainings.
The abundance of useful material in this book includes: Elman's rapid, easy, and highly effective induction method; methods for inducing and assesing the depth of the Esdaile state; and the application of hypnoanalysis to phobias and allergies. There is also a 39-page chapter entitled "Questions Doctors Ask." Elman's tone throughout is direct, practical, earthy, yet eminently informed and informative. He also had the good sense not to overstate his case: "I don't think hypnosis is the last word in medicine, but I do think it is an important tool" (p. 254).
Proponents of more indirect methods of hypnosis may be put off by Elman's directive style, but it works. It also provides an excellent foundation on which beginning practitioners can build their style.
In light of its enormous practical value and the sheer enjoyment of reading it, there is very little negative I could say about this book. The author's view of what purport to be memories of intrauterine and past-life experiences is rather limited. He viewed such experiences as nothing more than dreams unintentionally induced by the physician and having "no basis in fact" (p. 310). He did not seem to consider the possibility that even if such accounts are only dreams they may still resonate symbolically with patients' core conflicts, thus having enormous therapeutic value. But again, this is a minor, and even nitpicking criticism, given the embarrassment of riches to be found in the rest of the book.
Elman (5/6/1900-12/5/1967) was himself something of a renaissance man. He became interested in hypnosis as a child when he saw first hand the relief it afforded his father from otherwise intractable pain of terminal cancer. A talented musician by his teens, Elman went on to perform on the vaudeville circuit, and he co-composed several songs with "father of the Blues," W. C. Handy, one of which was "Atlanta Blues." Later he had a career in radio that included several years spent hosting a program called "Hobby Lobby." This lasted until 1948 when Elman began his new career as hypnosis educator to medical and dental professionals. This book is his lasting legacy.
You're NOT a hypnotherapist if you didn't read parts of this book.......2006-07-29
I'll be honest with you. I haven't read the whole book. But I know that it is the most important piece of paper in hypnosis.
Why? Because finally we have fundamental scientfic laws in our profesion just like in physics. People always have said that hypnosis is "an altered state that has the theta brainwave state". But now we know that it is the bypas of the critical factor. And finally we have a nice definition for it.
I realize that some people might not like the techniques that were written in this book. (Mainly because they were trained in other techniques and now don't want to try anything new). The inductions in this book are pretty much the essence of modern hypnotherapy.
If you want a profesional book about hypnosis get this one.
If you want a metaphysical pseudoscientific monologe about hypnosis go read someone else. ("Hypnosis is a state where the power of god flows freely through you" (haha))
Excellent - 5 stars!.......2005-09-11
This book is very fast paced and enlightening. I have read many books that introduce Hypnosis and this book leaves them all trailing behind and is quite simply in a league of its own.
Its writen in a humourous and direct manner and sheds light on many areas concerning the 5 basic hypnotic states. Mr Elman has written this book primarily for Therapists and Drs and subsequently there is much to learn from this viewpoint.
I agree with the above reviewer that the case regarding the homosexual client was not ideal (the understanding of homosexuality was outdated, and I have to stress there was absolutely NO homophobia suggested in the text), Mr Elman treated this patient with utmost respect and helped him overcome his Depression.
Even now looking at the contents page of this book impresses me at how many topics are dealt with. And they are all covered with great devotion and attention to detail. There is absolutely no waffle in this book and I treat it as one of the best works ever!
A must resource for any Hypnotist/Hypnotherapist!
A Master at Hypnosis.......2005-08-28
Hello,
I've been producing hypnosis related dvd's and cds for years, and found Elman's book to be of the highest caliber. It was recommended to me by one of my clients in fact.
Great material for the thinking hypnosis junkie who want's real solid information that you can build a practice on.
Read, learn and enjoy,

A Must Read.......2005-05-15
Anyone who is into hypnotherapy should read this book. Three people suggested I read this book when they learnt I was studying Hypnotherapy. Dave Elman was certainly a head of his time and is still unfortunately under rated. Hypnosis is more than having someone close their eyes in a comfortable chair. Hypnosis occurs when suggestions are believed wholeheartedly 100%. Like the book suggests, it is a beautiful natural state that should be learned from the inside. Unfortunately there are too many people just learning about it from the outside and are afraid to use it.
