Customer Reviews:
You must own this book!.......2007-09-19
Marilyn Wann has written the funniest, most intelligent, and engaging book you can imagine. I got my hands on a copy nearly two years ago and have read the book over and over since; I even keep a copy on my desk to share with colleagues and friends. Every time I read FAT!SO? I find myself laughing ("little LB, the pound of fat who went around the world), crying (some of the stories of discrimination are heartbreaking) and generally wrapped up in the amazing world of FAT!SO?.
As a fat aerobics instructor and personal trainer I recommend FAT!SO? to all my clients. If you've ever hated your body, no matter what size you are, I recommend it to you, too. FAT!SO? will change the way you think about your body the way no other book can.
A little reality, please.......2007-09-15
I'm kind of amazed that anyone would write a book that portrays obesity as anything other than unhealthy. Another reviewer stated "She's a healthy 270lb, 5'4" woman." She was recently on CNN where her weight was given as 285lb, so apparently her weight is increasing with time. At what point *will* it be unhealthy? There are those who claim she's healthy at that weight based on the simplistic argument that her blood pressure and cholesterol are normal. This is like saying smoking isn't hurting you because you don't have lung cancer or emphysema. Such a claim flies in the face of decades of medical research that uniformly demonstrates a wealth of health problems whose risk factors go up substantially in obese people. In fact, when she was asked on CNN if her doctor has told her she needs to lose some weight she avoided the question.
I'm not saying obese people should feel bad about themselves, because that never helps anyone. Nor do I think people should be obsessed with being skinny. A healthy weight does not equate to being healthy, but obesity almost universally results in one or more health problems eventually. Eating disorders take many forms, from anorexia to compulsive eating, and none of them are healthy. I don't think it's in anyone's best interest to give into delusions that being overweight doesn't involve negative consequences. Obesity is undoubtedly the most far-reaching health problem we face today. In addition to a wide range of health problems that can be triggered or exacerbated by obesity (too many to list here), there are other, non-health consequences as well.
A University of Illinois study estimated that Americans are burning an additional 938 million more gallons of gasoline each year than they did in 1960 because because they weigh more now. www.fueleconomy.gov states: "An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%." So every time Marilyn puts her 100+ extra pounds in her car she's burning more gas and putting more wear and tear on her car (a friend of mine who worked for a major auto manufacturer says they have to consider the effects of obesity when they design cars). A study in 2000 estimated that airlines spend an extra $275 million annually on additional fuel to fly passengers who are heavier than they were in the past, and they adjust ticket prices accordingly.
When was the last time you saw a 5'4" 285lb woman kayaking, waterskiiing, skydiving, climbing, cycling, or any of a number of other activities that require being in good physical condition? Don't let people like Marilyn tell you that the only reason people want you to lose weight is so you can conform to an image society has decided is the perfect person. That's simply not true.
It's very common for people with unhealthy habits and lifestyles to make excuses and even deny reality. How many alcoholics claim they don't have a problem? How many people with addictions deny their addictions? How many diabetics are lax with their diet and insulin because they won't take their diabetes seriously? Use your brains, folks. Enjoy the book, but don't let it encourage you to become complacent if you're overweight.
good support book.......2007-08-05
great book, helps alot with selfcondifendce & its wonderfil all the way around & im not fat lmao
Makes you think twice about size and our obsession with it in society..........2007-07-16
This book is a real "in your face" exploration of being fat and what it means to so many Americans. For so long I was feeling horrible and guilty because I had gained weight after having kids and was no longer the thin woman I once was. After reading this book, I have found that I have a more positive outlook on myself and a better body image. I will no longer feel bad about how I look. The book even motivated me to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe - even if it is in a bigger size now. I love my new clothes, my new look and my newfound confidence. I recommend this book to all women out there who have ever felt bad about their weight!
great resource.......2007-06-13
This book had some great stories, and I loved all the quotes. It is a great pick me up and a great resource for any size issue.
Book Description
Hit the gym for a workout--but sit for hours at your computer. Supersize your value meals--but downsize your waistline. Today's media-saturated teenagers are bombarded with mixed messages that distort their self-image and lead many to overeat and others to starve themselves. When "I feel fat" becomes a teen's common refrain, how can worried parents respond constructively? With "I'm, Like, SO Fat!" Dr. Dianne Neumark-Sztainer shows parents how to strike the difficult balance between bolstering self-esteem and offering constructive advice. Drawing on her landmark study, Project EAT (Eating Among Teens), and her experience as a mother of four, Neumark-Sztainer offers a wealth of science-based, practical ideas for instilling healthy eating and exercise habits, educating teens about nutrition and portion size, and talking about body image. Here is a rock-solid foundation that parents everywhere can build on to help their teens stay fit, eat well, and feel good about their looks in a world where too-perfect bodies are used to sell everything from cosmetic surgery to fast food.

Janet and Greta Podleski, also known as The Looneyspoons Sisters, are the high-energy authors of the low-fat cookbook Looneyspoons and its follow-up, Crazy Plates. But to call these sisters cookbook authors may be a misnomer: they're more like a wacky comedy team touring Hoboken doing the low-fat-zealot routine for admiring audiences.
No, Crazy Plates is not just about low-fat recipes. There's much, much more here, including fat facts (a pound of body fat--representative of 3,500 calories--if shaped into a ball, would be the size of a softball and equal four sticks of butter), "Trivial Tidbits" (baking soda used to be added to the water for boiling vegetables until it was discovered that it destroyed the veggies' vitamin C), "You Do the Math" (substituting Canadian bacon for the regular high-fat stuff once a week for a year will cut your fat intake by 1,196 grams), and a lot of corny humor ("Did you hear what happened to the peanut when he walked through the park? He was a salted"). Then there are the recipes--accompanied, of course, by cartoons--like Salmon Davis Jr., broiled salmon steaks in a spicy tomato sauce; Mercedes Buns, cinnamon rolls with less than three grams of fat per serving; My Yammi Spice, oven-baked fries with cumin, paprika, and oregano; and Berry Maniloaf, a lemon and raspberry bread loaf with 161 calories per slice.
The recipes are well laid out, not time-consuming, aimed at the home cook with a family to feed, and will please the palate of those wanting gourmet fare without the fat. But how do the Podleski sisters accomplish this rare feat? Spices are an essential ingredient of many dishes: Name That Tuna Salad, for example, gets its character from basil, mint, garlic, and Dijon mustard--with no help from that scary sidekick, mayo! This is a book for anyone who wants to cut back on fat without losing flavor, and for those that like a little slapstick with their flapjacks (Peter Pancakes, with bananas and strawberry sauce). --Stefanie Durbin

Crazy Plates.......2007-01-28
I loved this cookbook so much that I bought Looney Spoons also! I haven't tried even one recipe that I don't like! And I love the witty remarks - they almost make me feel like cooking isn't such a drudgery after all. I even bought both books as a Christmas present for my daughter who is is newly married and just beginning to cook. She and her husband love the recipes, and he is VERY picky. My only negative comment is that Looney Spoons seems to only be available "used". When I received my copy, I didn't particularly like getting a cookbook (which was supposed to be in very good condition!) with someone else's cooking smears all over it! Yuck!
Some good recipes, but terminal case of "the cutes".......2006-06-04
As with their previous book, I suggest you borrow this book from the library before buying it. You will either like their style of writing or you won't.
This one is laid out in the same busy/distracting style, with again, lots of "cute" names for recipes. I found it annoying to read, but your children might think it lots of fun.
And, transfer the recipes you like onto recipe cards rather than trying to work with the book.
CHICKEN FAJITA SALAD - BUY THE BOOK JUST FOR THIS!.......2006-06-01
I just received CRAZY PLATES and made the chicken fajita salad for Memorial Day. While putting this salad together I was beginning to have my doubts. But fear not, this is a fantastic tasting salad and I definately plan on making it again.
I am so encouranged by this recipe and this books great reviews that I have also purchased Looneyspoons and have pre-ordered Eat Shrink and be Merry.
I am a former Weight Watcher and just recently quit NutriSystem (I hit a plateau and was tired of their food). I have gone back to using the Weight Watcher's plan and will incorporate the appetizing recipes from these books to keep me on track.
great food with good size portions.......2006-03-07
I'm on weight watchers and I like the weight watcher's take out tonight book but I feel the portions are just a touch small, this book however is great. The taste is good and you will actually get full plus another thing I like about the book its that it not a bunch of non fat ingredients like non fat cheese or sour cream etc... I also like that the entire book uses the same spices so you do not have to run out and buy a bunch of different spices. I've only had to purchase coriander. Plus it gives you a whole bunch of little tips and inspirations on every page. Out of the 9 low fat or weight watchers cookbooks that I own this one is by far the best.
I have never written a review, but..........2005-12-14
this book is so easy to use and the recipes are so delicious that I am compelled to include my feedback. As someone who is not a superstar in the kitchen, when I use these recipes, I feel that I make a unique and healthy meal for my family that is always well-received. What strikes me the most about this book is that a majority of the main dish recipes include all the food groups. I have found that most of the time, the kids do not even know that they are eating vegetables. By the way, I think "Crazy Plates" is MUCH better than "Looney Spoons."

This healthy Mexican cookbook does not sacrifice taste for when getting rid of fat. I particularly liked the Green chile and pork stew which was hearty and spicy. It also contains some excellent seafood recipes.

You can eat low fat and not skip desserts with Betty Rohde's So Fat, Low Fat, No Fat Desserts, a collection of 180 low-fat and fat-free desserts. All are made with low-fat versions of common ingredients that you can find in your pantry or supermarket, such as fat-free margarine, egg substitute, light or fat-free cream cheese, and fat-free milk. Each recipe includes fat grams (but not total calories) and cooking time. Many recipes start with prepared mixes, making them quick and easy to prepare. For example, Pumpkin Puff Cake combines canned pumpkin-pie filling and angel-food cake mix, topped with a mixture of sweetened condensed milk, canned pumpkin, powdered sugar, instant vanilla pudding, and fat-free whipped topping. Total preparation and cooking time: 32 minutes. Fat grams: 0. "Hot Fudge Sundae Pudding Cake" has only 3 grams of fat in the entire cake--the "hot fudge" is brown sugar and cocoa. The most unusual recipe is "Faux Coconut Chocolate Cake"--the magic ingredient is sauerkraut!
Rohde shares her tips for modifying a high-fat dessert recipe: substitute cocoa for baking chocolate; add instant pudding mix to fat-free cream cheese for nonrunny frosting; substitute applesauce for oil; and keep fat-free frozen whipped topping on hand to thicken, thin, "fluff, puff, and stuff." --Joan Price

Customer Reviews:
A useless book if you don't live in the United States.......2005-04-16
I am an American living abroad and found this book near impossible to use because of the ingredients called for...fat-free cheese, fat-free salad dressing, Butter Buds, Lite Cool Whip??? I have therefore NEVER used this book. And I don't see what is so impressing anyway. If I really wanted to, I could take my Joy of Cooking and replace all the fatty ingredients to "fat-free" and use more spices instead of butter for flavor. Maybe this is a good book for those who are totally clueless about cooking and health, but other than that I wouldn't recommend it. It has been sitting on my shelf for 3 years, collecting dust. I think it's finally time I threw it out and made space for a better cookbook.
Good ol' American food..........1999-01-24
Having lived in California for most of my life, I am quite used to the trendy, healthy cuisines with costly ingredients you've never heard of. This book was a nice change. The idea is that all of the recipes have ingredients you could even purchase in a local grocery store in Oklahoma - where the author originates. I bought this book on a whim because it was in the clearance section of my local book store. I paid full price for the Italian version because the original was so great.
Rohde has given helpful tips in the front of the books for cutting fat out of recipes. Each recipe has the fat content and preparation time. The one thing that could use some improvement is cutting the use of refined sugar in the dessert section. Also, since Rohde is from the south I am guessing I won't see a vegetarian version anytime soon - too bad.
Who Edited This?.......1998-07-31
These recipes are great--realistic food for real people who haven't a clue what lemongrass is--but who edited this book? It's filled with rambling, pointless stories and just terrible grammar, making it handy to flip through but a painful read.
Great Idea But............1998-01-11
I have read many diet books in my time, but this one seems to be more realistic than most. The idea of significantly reducing the amount of fat we eat is much easier in this day and age. However, the authors remark of not watching the amount of food she ate is troublesome. Large amounts of even fat free foods will still cause weight gain. I was also concerned about the amount of chemicals you would be eating when you use a lot of the fat free products. The recipies looked delicious and they all were made of products that we all would find in our local supermarket. No bizarre ingredients that no one will eat, especially children! All in all it is a good book and easy to read.

Italian So Fat, Low Fat, No Fat.......2001-03-12
I have just started making recipes from this cookbook and enjoy the good tastes and seasonings, especially the Eggplant Lasagne. I did have a problem with one recipe, Chocolate Budino, and wonder if there is a mistake and if the author, Beddy Rohde, or anyone else has a solution. The cake/pudding part of it turned out fine, but the topping never melted in the saucepan, and was very dry on top. It seemed to need more liquid than the 2 Tbsp. Amaretto. Other recipes I've tried have turned out great!

OK, so you want to lose weight, but you don't want to be miserable while you're doing it. This is a very funny cookbook, and that doesn't happen very often. Full of interesting food facts, funny cartoons, nutrtition info and great recipes, it makes a great gift for someone you know trying to follow a healthy diet. Too bad it's out of print.

really good.......2006-08-12
I have her Mexican So fat, No Fat cookbook and I've found some really good recipes that I use often. I thought I'd try this one, and so far the recipes I've tried are really good.
What a great resource!.......2000-10-10
For anyone (like me) who knows very little about cooking has even less time do it, and does not like fast food or hamburger helper, this is a great book. It combines a practical variety of meals which taste much better than frozen dinners and don't take a lot of time to prepare. The ingredient lists are short and most importantly, you don't need a dictionary to decipher the various items on them. It is a very down-to-earth cook book and I have found it much more useful than the giant cooking encyclopedias and other recipe books I've bought in the past. So take a look at it and enjoy!
