3 out of 5 stars It Takes A Miracle For Some Men To Come to Their Senses........2006-07-26

It is so much easier to fall in love with a stranger than your good friend who'd put everything on the back burner to come to the aid of a friend. I thought that growing up without a mother was hard until I read about Pete losing both parents as a young child, as did Addie and Janny who also grew up in the foster care program. Now, that has to be the pits.

Pete had dreams of finding his cousin and using the thing his mother left to him as a remembrance, simultaneously at the age of sixteen. Neither worked the way he had imagined. With the monetary help of an uncle who lived a sullen, unforgiving life because he could not marry the woman he loved, Pete attended Harvard where he met his destiny, Annie, and yet it took a total disaster in Pete's personal life for him to learn these facts.

It was twenty years after he gave up on finding Barney, that he found what he thought was his true love. She was so wild, lovely and different from him. He was old beyond his years. As the lovebirds were planning a future together, he secured the funds for Mattie to find her dream life in a store she named appropriately "Fairy Tales." He'd thought that this gypsy girl was his destiny and soon put Annie on the back burner of his life. He was living a fairy tale, as Mattie and her childhood friend Janny were. Janny always had the goal of finding her birth mother, as the adoption did not take and she grew up in foster homes along with Mattie.

It's a good thing these young women were tough on the inside as they witnessed a terrible murder and were taken into the Protective system which was a Hell on Earth. Annie left her career in law on hold and rushed to her friend's assistance to carry on with "Fairy Tales" and to decorate his new fancy house out by the lake along the Eastern coast near his uncle's mansion. During this separation, both Pete and Mattie changed drastically; they learned to never take things for granted again and never presume, never assume.

Annie learned the hard way that she had actually loved Pete all these years more than as a friend. She learned that love meant putting the other person first and was wanting the other's happiness more than you want your own. Pete had no time for trips down Memory Lane, and he persisted in dreaming of Mattie. One day he realized what he had been missing and looked at Annie through the eyes of love. How could something so ordinary be so wonderful? He had depended on her for his emotional needs since their Harvard days; when she went her own way to find some solace for her broken heart, he goes after her.

She finds Barney for him, his good fortune, as Pete gives him the uncle's house and all of its contents. He has a new home and a woman to complete the picture of domestic tranquility. From that moment, he meant to live in the present and put the past completely behind him. Who has time to wallow in self-pity?

5 out of 5 stars My Favvvvvvvvv Fiction Book.......2006-04-30

Aloha, Fern Michaels!!! "Desperate Measures" is absolutely, positively, indeed, My Favvvvvvvvv Fiction Book in the Whole Wide World. I truly enjoyed reading it -- immensely!!! It was so heart felt and touching, especially concerning the two young boys, who made promises to each others. Although time, age, distance and dire circumstances kept them apart for decades, they reunited later in life. I often reread that part when things are going sour in my life as to glean a lil more hope and strength.

The ending was simply, superb. I've read many of your books and look forward to reading more. You're indeed my favvvvvvvvvv author in the whole wide world of fiction, hehe. Keep up the {{{GOOD WORK, FERN!!!}}} I shall read perhaps alllllll of your books, this life time, lol.

Mahalo for sharing your ingenius wrting talents w/ the UNIVERSE.

God Bless,

I have liked all of the books I have read of Fern's but this one is the first that has crossed the line for my distaste in reading two different ways to curse.
I have stopped reading it and hope that the othe4 10 books I have by her lack these words.
Ms. Michaels, please do not use God's name in vain in your writings and the F word.
This is my humble opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Desperate Measures must be taken!.......2001-12-08

This book "Desperate Measures" is a very good book. In the book Pete Sorenson talks about how he lost his mom and dad, and he remembers memories from when he was little. Me reading that and comprehending that makes me think how lucky I am to still have my mom and dad. I think it's great that Pete has such a great friend like Anne Gabriel. They're friendship makes me charish mine even more! I think it shows true friendship when Anne drops everything to go help Pete. I think in a way Pete needed Maddie to show him who he really truley loved. By almost marrying Maddie it made him see that he really loved Anne, not Maddie. Pete had to go through many difficult times in this book. He not only lost Maddie but he lost his uncle Leo too. Pete went to desperate measures to try to get Anne to feel the same way as he did for her, which in the end worked out for the best.
Reading this book makes me appreciate life and be thankful for what I all have. I will admit I tend to take life for granted and I think, whatever happens, happens. I now do not think that way anymore. You have to live while you're alive, is what I now think. Like Pete's feelings for Anne and how he couldn't tell her, I have the same problem. There are so many people I care for and love so much, but they don't know that and I wish so much that they did know. I just don't have the courage to tell them my honest feelings. With the help of this book I have been able to tell a lot of the people I care for, just how much I care for them. I owe it all to "Desperate Measures." Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2000-08-26

What a wonderful story. It warmed my heart. The story was about two best friends Pete and Annie. A coming of age story where they both search for their destiny and find out that they share what is most important. A heartwarming once in a life time friendship. Good book to chase away the blues.

Book Description

Published amidst great controversy in hardcover, Emergency Sex has literally shaken the foundations of the United Nations and made headlines around the world. Three idealists searching for meaning in the world's toughest war zones; three people thrown together who bond for dear life. In a memoir so powerful and staggeringly well-written that it's impossible to put down, Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait, and Andrew Thomson describe the UN Peacekeeping missions that challenged everything they believed in and changed them irrevocably.

As their stories interweave, taking them to wartorn hotspots, the three friends reveal a world that is a cacophony of dodged bullets, witnessed atrocities, primal desires, and exotic pleasures. Emergency Sex is lyrical, graphic, and devastatingly honest.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better.......2007-07-22

Saving lives while putting yours under risk sounds like the perfect material for a compelling memoir and the juicy title of this one sounds like it would deliver in spades. However I was ultimately disappointed by "Emergency Sex".

The book is written by three aid workers: Ken, a recent Harvard graduate; Heidi, a social worker from New York; and Richard, an idealistic doctor from New Zealand. The three meet initially when they are all working in Cambodia and their stories intersect as they work together and separately on assignment in various `90s trouble spots: Somalia, Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia. The book is written by each of them in turn and the pace is quick and lively. Parts are exciting (the description of being in Somalia when the Black Hawk helicopter was downed) or very moving (the description of the terrible atrocities in Rwanda and Liberia).

So it's an interesting read but somehow it failed to grab me. The book does convey what its like to be an aid worker: alternating fear, adrenalin, exhaustion, hopelessness, cynicism and only very occasionally the sense that you've made a small difference to the world. It certainly gives the flavor of how terrible things were in these places and how the UN could have done things better. However the three personalities never rang true for me. I didn't feel that I got to know these people. As another reviewer has commented, they all sounded curiously alike and I got the sense that Ken perhaps penned all three stories. Heidi's story was too much Ken's fantasy of the girl with the limpid eyes and the active sexual appetite. Richards's story was also Ken's fantasy of the heroic and noble doctor who windsurfed in his spare time. I'm not saying that these aren't real people, just that they never leapt off the page and became real to me.

Perhaps because of this, or perhaps because the nature of aid work is such that it's one long grind, the book dragged along for me. While I didn't mind it, I never felt the urge to pick it up and read more. I felt several times that I could have skipped 100 pages here or there and it wouldn't have made much difference. Really, you could flip open the book in a bookstore, read a few pages here and there, and get the flavor of the entire piece. It's not a bad book by any stretch, but it could have been better with judicious editing.

4 out of 5 stars LOVED this book.......2007-07-13

I really enjoyed this book. I was hard-pressed to put it down. I am an avid reader and politics/history person yet at times I still found my self appauled that some of the things discussed in the book never made it to light in the media. We all know how the media is - they report locally not globally. It was so refreshing to hear the personal accounts of 3 individuals about what their lives were really like living in these war-torn areas. Average citizens should be so lucky to be informed of these unfortunate events. It's a huge wake up call....

4 out of 5 stars 5-star stories. 3-star writers........2007-04-09

I picked up this book and read it, almost compulsively, during a trip to Cambodia earlier this year. Structured as interspersed diary entries of three people who become involved in one way or another in the big moments of UN interventions from 93 on -- democracy to Cambodia, Somalia, Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia...

Although lacking the narrative skills of more accomplished writers or the insightful introspection of truly self-aware diarists, you cannot help but develop an understanding (no matter how objectionable) to the different characters, their motivations and the different ways they choose to react to and cope with the overwhelming reality of the horrors that surround them.

Andrew is a doctor driven by a genuinely humanitarian streak; all the more poignant for his painful shyness which seems to make him unable to relate to others as strongly as he relates to humanity as a race. Ken's motivation seems to be a desire to live up to quixotic ideals which he wants others to acknowledge -- feels can best be served through his involvement in the humanitarian work. Heidi appears a shallow narcissist who deals with her own insecurities with a dominating personality and a self-destructive hedonism and abandonment that seems to be only heightened by an impending feeling of doom.

Overall, the stories are riveting. Deeply personal moments sprinkle what little gems of unexpectedly prescient insights -- the mistakes of the "international community" and NGOs in handling the crises, the lack of many shades of gray and the impersonal amorality and frailties of many of the people who we would hold to a higher standard.

But perhaps what I found most powerful was the creeping realization -- almost imperceptible -- of the futility of the whole thing. Spirits are high at the start of the book, the sense of purpose almost messianic. But as the stakes climb and the disappointments become harder to justify, the very real limitations of human interventions and the personal toll they take on those who are asked to be involved become apparent. There is a numb feeling of nothingness as the book draws out and the reader is left with a numb emptiness as he realises how little there is left to hope for.

The ending of the book is an awkward attempt at closure (with some interesting words by Ken) but overall suffers from the limited skills of the authors. However, purely for the benefit of the experiences they lived and the lessons they learnt, the book is worth a read.

Oh, and as most others point out, Heidi's sexual exploits (from where the book gets its title) are as sordid and pitiable as they are unnecessary.

5 out of 5 stars Intense Reality Check of History in Our Lifetime.......2006-12-29

This book was absolutely amazing. Written as a memoir from three different perspectives (twenty-somethings working for the UN with widely various backgrounds), the use of point of view is incredible and adds significant insight into the characters and the different aspects of world conflict through the nineties.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in world events or anyone who hates history because it's boring. The detail of character and plot development provide such an interesting foreground for the tumultuous, wartime background that you almost don't even realizing you're learning about real historical events.
Please read this book. It will open your eyes and entertain your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping, candid story of wartime events which refutes popular myth........2006-12-13

Here's a winner: a book which reads with all the high drama and action of fiction, but which is a nonfiction first-person story of three U.N. Peacekeepers who exposed atrocities during a decade of peacekeeping missions. This book received much acclaim in hardcover: its paperback rendition includes a new afterword by the authors and provides readers with a gripping, candid story of wartime events which refutes popular myth.

4 out of 5 stars Morrell Always Measures Up as a Great Read.......2007-04-23

This is another great Morrell novel, a bit different in style to the usual Morrell adventure (more like a Harlan Coben adventure) and Matt Pittman is a lot more realistic every day person type character and differs substantially to the usual ex CIA, ex Special Forces male lead such as Stephen Decker (Extreme Denial), Mitch Coltrane (Double Image), Cavanaugh (The Protector) Malone (Burnt Sienna) and so on. Also the chapters are substantially shorter than usual in a similar layout format to James Patterson's novels. Being so may not be what some Morrell fans are after but this book's still a great read.

In Desperate Measures Matt Pittman's wife has left him, his 15 year old son is dead and he thinks he's got nothing to live for. He's about to pull the trigger of the pistol inside his mouth when the phone ring. On the other end is his editor Burt, the only man he can never be square with debt wise, who asks him to help wrap up the last week of the Chronicle's existence. Burt asks Matt to write an obituary on Johnathan Millgate who isn't dead yet. Visiting the man in hospital Matt witnesses Millgate being transferred against his wishes into an ambulance so grabs a taxi and follows. Soon he is fleeing for his life and is wanted for Millgate's murder and even though he wants to die, he isn't prepared to let someone else do it for him, at least before he has uncovered the truth.

2 out of 5 stars A predicible thriller with poor characterization.......2006-09-12

Desparate Measures is the first novel I've ever read by David Morrell. I was instantly gripped by the pain suffered by the main character Matt Pittman. Pittman is suicidal because of the cancer death of his 15 year old son. Morrell lost his own son to cancer so I imagine writing this novel was quite an emotional ordeal for him. Pittman is startled to receive a phone call at the very moment he is about to kill himself. The phone call is from his boss, who wants Matt to come back to work for a few more days.

Matt is given an assignment to write an obituary for Jonathan Millgate. Millgate is an elderly statesman, and part of a group called the Grand Councelors. The Grand Councelors were five men who formed U.S. foreign policy from the 50s to the 90s and held several cabinet and ambassorship positions. Trying to maybe interview Millgate, Pittman stumbles up an attempted murder on his life. Pittman attempts to save Millgate and also hears his final words. Pittman doesn't know what Millgate's confession means, but now suddenly many men are trying to kill him.

At this point, the novel begins to fall apart. Because he was at Millgate's side when he died, Pittman is framed for the murder. Now, Pittman is on the run and also trying to find out what Millgate's last words meant. The book then follows a very standard formula. Pittman tries to find something out or goes somewhere, then chased by gunmen. Gunmen seem to be everywhere and every scene ends with Pittman outwitting them.

The plot seems secondary to the chase, when the plot actually had something interesting going for it. The plot is also bogged down by some of Morrell's anti-conservative ranting. Not a big deal, but standard right-wing conspiracy theories.

The climax is a long drawn out scene of exposition by Pittman. He is negotiating with the grand counselors on a way to end their stand-off. The climax is filled with long paragraphs of explanation of motives and operations. Pittman is spurred on by the grand counselors by words like "Explain," and "Complete your thought, Mr. Pittman."

The strong characterization built at the beginning of the novel with Pittman's pain at losing his son is diminished by the end of the novel when no more meaningful characters are introduced. This was a quick, easy novel to read but somewhat predictable. Probably will be my last Morrell book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-06-10

Morrell rocks again with this action extravaganza. the prose is sure-footed, the plot deft, and the action nonstop. the readers are in for a very satisfying ride, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Once you get past the first 35 pages, its quite a ride!.......2004-10-21

Newspaper reporter Matt Pittman, the protagonist, is literally preparing to kill himself with his pistol out of grief for his son that has died from cancer when the phone rings. Pittman decides to answer it because he wants to make sure that he exits this life without owing anything to anyone. It is his best friend and his boss who covered for him innumerable times when his son was sick. He asks for one more favor and Pittman reluctantly goes back on the job for one more story.

It was at this point in the book that I was about ready to close it up and start another book because the whole "I'm going to kill myself" angle was getting very, very old.

Suddenly, the pace of the book changed and Pittman's research into a well-connected diplomat leads to murder, mayhem and a multi-state manhunt for Pittman. From about page 35 on the book is a roller-coaster of a ride, very reminescent of 'The Fugitive'. It is well worth the read - despite the fact that you have to slog through the first 35 pages.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but forgettable.......2004-07-26

This action-packed story is a decent way to kill a few hours. It centers around a suicidal man who is cajoled into investigating a prominent statesman as a final favor to an old friend who is editor of a failing newspaper. While the characters are not very well developed, you'll enjoy watching the protagonist uncover a trail of dirty secrets. Just don't think about the plot too closely, or you'll start to see its holes.

Oregon lawyer Barbara Holloway and her father, Frank, formerly her partner, find themselves on opposite sides in the murder of Gus Marchand, a case with two suspects. Kate Wilhelm gives this smoothly told version of "Beauty and the Beast" an interesting added dimension, since the relationship between the two equally hardheaded and talented lawyers has usually been collaborative, at least professionally. But when the school principal, who's Frank's client, dies under mysterious circumstances, Frank's determined not to let Barbara pin the blame on the dead woman in order to deflect attention from her own as-yet-unidentified client. By the time Frank learns that the defendant in question is Alex Feldman, a horribly disfigured and immensely secretive young man who was accused by Marchand of stalking his teenage daughter, the reader has begun to understand why Barbara is so convinced of Alex's innocence in Gus's death and so determined to protect him from public scrutiny.

Alex is a man with a secret: was Frank's late client (and friend) killed to protect it? As usual, Wilhelm devises a clever plot and peoples it with a cast of well-developed, fully human and complex characters. There's Alex himself, who's found a way to cope with the circumstances of his disfigurement and the rage and bitterness that might otherwise have consumed him; Graham Minick, the elderly doctor who has been his friend and confidante since he was a teenager; and Shelley, Barbara's beautiful young associate, who sees beyond Alex's ugliness and into his heart. By the time the trial of the man they call "the devil's spawn" begins, Frank and Barbara are on the same side, but it's the younger Holloway's star turn in the courtroom, which is where the novel really shines. A solid page turner that should delight the prolific Wilhelm's (No Defense, Defense for the Devil) many fans. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Barbara Holloway has a reputation for taking on the toughest cases . . . and winning them. But this time she's up against an unbeatable opponent -- her father, the lawyer who taught her all she knows.

Gus Marchand, a hardworking, God-fearing farmer, is found dead on his kitchen floor, and suspicion soon falls on Alex Feldman, Marchand's hideously deformed neighbor. At the request of another attorney, Barbara agrees to defend the young man, whom most of the town has already condemned.

But there is another suspect, as well: Hilde Franz, a woman Gus had a very public altercation with just before he was murdered. Hilde also happens to be an old friend of Barbara's father, Frank, who, unaware of his daughter's involvement in the case, agrees to represent Hilde.

For the first time in her career, Barbara cannot turn to her father for advice. Quite the contrary: she has to stay one step ahead of him if she's to have any hope of saving her client. Because she knows only too well what kind of legal mind she's up against.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding! A fascinating story exceptionally well told........2007-01-03

Simply put, this is an absolutely outstanding novel. It was my first exposure to Kate Wilhelm and I was quite impressed. The story is interesting and retained my interest to the end, so much so that I have already ordered other Barbara Holloway novels. Wilhelm's describes her characters well, and her writing never intrudes. We immediately take a dislike to the bigoted primary victim. Our sympathy for the accused, a badly disfigured, but highly talented editorial artist, builds as the story develops. The legal machinations are intriguing and the plot unfolds in a believable way. The resolution of the mystery may surprise many readers, and if you become fully immersed in the story, the novel's post denouement conclusion may bring empathetic tears of happiness.

One Note: The number of important characters is probably slightly more than one might expect, e.g., in a cozy mystery, and the reader may need to make a few brief notes to keep all of them clearly in mind if completing the novel will extend over more than just a few days.

3 out of 5 stars Disparate Measures.......2004-08-19

I concur with the reviewer who noted Wilhelm's one-demensional treatment of Christian characters, as opposed to the depth with which she treats characters who either espouse no religion or are not identified as belonging to a particular religious sect. It smacks of intellectual laziness to take the easy route and ridicule those whose deeply held religious beliefs placed them at odds with (in this case) the education establishment. While it's true that nobody is perfect, and it would be just as unfortunate if Wilhelm had attributed perfection to these characters, the story would have been far better had the Marchand parents and other Christian characters been painted with more than one color.

Those considering the unabridged audio version of this book might want to make another selection. I'm not sure whether Marguerite Gavin always narrates like this, or whether she was just having a bad day, but her work is alternately jarring, grating, and outright bad when it comes to her (mis)pronounciation of well-known Pacific Northwest geography. One such example is her pronounciation of "Willamette," which will drive anyone familiar with the Northwest, the Willamette River, or Willamette University up the proverbial wall.

5 out of 5 stars leaves you wanting more!.......2004-03-29

Barbara Holloway takes on yet another difficult, unusual case. But this time her father is on the same case. Different suspect. Can they sort out their relationship enough to remain father and daughter? Or will the lawyer in them both make life unbearable as each tries to make their case for their client?

Fantastic character development and descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars An unusual premise.......2003-03-22

In this mystery,Kate Wilhelm uses a disfigured man as the main suspect for a murder and as the story unfolds she makes us aware of how much importance society places on looks.I thought this was an unusual premise for a murder mystery. As always her books are suspenseful, surprising and this story also has a happy ending.I highly recommend this author especially if you love the Pacific Northwest.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing - too much bias.......2002-11-15

As usual, Ms. Wilhelm created a great story, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the mind guessing. However, it smacked of bias.

The character of the murdered man, Gus Marchand, is flat. He's just a bad guy. He calls himself a Christian, but he is a hateful, bigoted, controlling man who demeans his wife and beats his children. There is no other side to this man, no balance, no reason for why he is such a person. It is as though Marchand has no good feelings about anything or anyone, and everything he has ever done is bad. Towards the end of the book, Barbara Holloway blames Marchand for everything, even the murder of a woman by her lover who feared he would be exposed, because "Gus Marchand was a zealot who was determined to impose his belief system on everyone around him."

In fact, anyone clearly identified as a Christian is painted with a broad brush of bias. The wife is a weak-willed woman willing to submit to Marchand's domination of the home and abusive manner towards those in the community who don't share his beliefs. The pastor of the Baptist church Marchand attended saw Marchand as a good, honest man who never lied, a hero in the home, and at the end of his testimony in court, he appeared the buffoon as he loudly launched into a prayer to protect the daughter from the devil. Many of the townspeople, who were also members of Marchand's church in the rural Oregon town, blindly followed along with his hateful rhetoric, and were too often just stupid.

Characters not associated as Christians were real people, humans that showed compassion, felt pain and anger, had high principles but demonstrated flaws, and so on. So much was well-written: one felt ill for the hatred and abuse Alex had wrongly received over the years. Unfortunately, it just appeared to have too much bias against one group to suit my tastes.

Book Description

Jennie McGrady's Labor Day weekend promises relaxation and fun when she visits a fur farm run by family acquaintances. Jennie's anticipation of the trip grows when she learns Scott Chambers, an old friend, has taken a job at the very same farm. But on her first night there, the mink are released from a neighboring farm and Jennie fears the sometimes volatile Scott may have been behind it.

Scott Chambers' participation in extreme animal rights activities is in the past or so he claims. Jennie wants to believe him, but his arrival to the area just before the mink release seems more than coincidence. And when Bob Sutherland, the affected farmer, turns up missing, suspicion falls on Scott.

Aleshia Sutherland makes no secret of her involvement with the radical Animal Rights Movement and has been kicked out of her parents home because of it. Does she despise her father's line of work so much that she would hurt him?

Can Jennie look beyond her personal feelings to find the truth?

5 out of 5 stars The best so far!.......1999-01-18

This is the best Jennie McGrady book I have read! It all starts when Jennie and her best friend Lisa are going up to an old friends mink farm to visit for the weekend! Jennie is also excited because Scott is there and she can't wait to see him! When they get there, though, a mystery has been released! Someone has let the neighbors minks loose, not to mention other things! This is the best I have read! I do wish that her dad had been in it more! He has just been introduced and he has barly been in the books!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......1998-08-22

This is the best book so far! Though I do wish that Jennie's Dad was more into it. And what happened to Rocky?

World renowned poster artist and pop culture sponge Frank Kozik strikes again, with this, the third installment of his ongoing series of books. For those of you in the know, this is all you need. Buy it now! For those who don't know better, Kozik's appropriation of all forms of pop cultural references (mainly cartoons, pop subculture and propaganda) are a wellspring of intense design and a wonderfully keen eye. Truly a joy to pore over.
