5 out of 5 stars Great to help you develope your cover letters for jobs.......2007-01-19

I recommend this any entry level job seeker. looking fro a little expert advise in there job search.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addtion to its sister book "resume magic".......2006-12-09

This book follows the path the "resume magic" made. Although I found slightly below "resume magic" it still an excellent reference to write cover letters.

All aspects of building a cover letter are covered in a progressive manner. The task of writing is therefore a lot easier. Examples are very good, and the author did a very good job leading the reader through the task of writing a cover letter.

In the end this book will definitely help you come up with strong, well structured and well written cover letters.

A must have for every job-seekers or just any professional.

5 out of 5 stars Adapted for the times.......2005-03-08

As an IT professional, I found this book packed with good information. The overall style is updated and compatible with the times, and the many examples are creative and varied. Too many "cover letters" cling to the old school of "Enclosed Please Find" formality of another era. In these times, it's equally important to communicate some idea of your style and personality to give an employer a more complete picture of what they're getting when they think of hiring you - that extra something that makes you pleasantly unique from the 500 other cover letters in the pile.

For my field, I almost never use paper anymore for letters or for resumes, so I found the info on email throughout the book to be very useful. Most books I've seen barely cover it at all or the authors don't quite grasp its limitations.

I also liked the way the book analyzed the cover letter examples of what worked and what didn't, and why. The exercises were a bit vague but you don't really need them to get the most from this book. It's worth every penny.

1 out of 5 stars Not for serious jobs.......2003-10-05

This book is decent if you're looking for a back-office/blue-collar type job. The tactics are very basic and the examples are childish and the format quite unprofessional. If you're looking for a real cover letter guide for the most competitive jobs look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resumes for Educators !!.......2007-05-19

Most teachers do not know how to write a resume....this is a GREAT SOURCE of information. I highly recommend it for an educator who is needing to write a resume. Well worth the money !!!

4 out of 5 stars Good resource for applying for teaching positions.......2007-05-13

This book helped me to organize my resume. It is a good resource for key words that are attention grabbers so that your resume will get noticed. I am sure I will use this reference book to help me update my resume in the future too.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE BOOK!.......2007-04-27

Let me tell you, I recently checked out four books from the library that are specifically aimed at teachers (this book, Resumes and Cover Letters for Teachers, 101 Grade A Resumes for Teachers, and Real-Resumes for Teachers). If you want the ultimate book, this is it!

I was utterly amazed at the quality and uniqueness of the resumes included in this book. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with the various concepts that the authors have touched upon. This book is A-1, perfect for the 21st century teacher - regardless of where you are at in your career or what subject you teach (there is a specific section aimed directly to you and your situation). If you want to stand out from the crowd and get your resume pulled out of the stack of thousands then this book is the way to do it. Incidentally, if you're looking for an excellent secondary source check out Real-Resumes for Teachers (Real-Resumes Series) (Real-Resumes Series). It won't replace this book by a long shot, but it will give you some additional ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The best resume book for teachers!!.......2003-11-19

I got this book along with several other resume books for teachers from the library. I thought this book was the best of all of them. It is filled with actual award-winning resumes by real teachers. The authors point out the special features and strengths of each resume. What I especially liked is that they focus on the visual style and formatting of a resume along with the content.

Using the examples and tips in this book, I re-formatted my resume to showcase my strengths and be easier to read. I had sent my old resume to someone in response to a teaching job he had, but I never heard from him. Still hoping to get in at this school district, I sent my new and improved resume to a different person, hoping she might have some openings instead. Well, she gave a copy of my new resume to the first person and he called me the same day for an interview!! I know it sounds like a cliche, but it really happened. My new resume got me in the door, and I got the job!! I highly recommend this book!

Book Description

Celebrated playwright and magnetic wit Wendy Wasserstein has been firmly rooted in New York’s cultural life since her childhood of Broadway matinees, but her appeal is universal. Shiksa Goddess collects thirty-five of her urbane, inspiring, and deeply empathic essays–all written when she was in her forties, and all infused with her trademark irreverent humor.

The full range of Wasserstein’s mid-life obsessions are covered in this eclectic collection: everything from Chekhov, politics, and celebrity, to family, fashion, and real estate. Whether fretting over her figure, discovering her gentile roots, proclaiming her love for ordered-in breakfasts, lobbying for affordable theater, or writing tenderly about her very Jewish mother and her own daughter, born when she was forty-eight and single, Wasserstein reveals the full, dizzying life of a shiksa goddess with unabashed candor and inimitable style.

Download Description

When the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright turned 40, she made a To Do list, most of which repeated the items she had listed when she turned 30. In Shiksa Goddess, her first book of essays in ten years, Wasserstein takes on these and other midlife obsessions with her famous, appealing humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2007-01-08

Wonderful story. Makes me sad I did not get to know Wendy while she was alive.

5 out of 5 stars How we will miss the Shiksa Goddess.......2006-11-03

Wendy Wasserstein's untimely death in the winter of 2006, at the young age of 55, robs us of what should have been decades more of her witty, generous-spirited but sharp, wise feminst humor. These essays are a delight, giving us much over which to ponder and chuckle, even in our sadness, knowing as we do that the mind and spirit creating them have left us. Read them to savor baby boom feminism in mid-life, and to honor the memory of a great woman of letters.

5 out of 5 stars Very clever smart chick lit!.......2006-07-10

Wendy Wasserstein has won Pulitzer prizes and it shows in this book! Of course it's "just chick lit" but still very well written, well thought out chick lit that's a cut above the rest in my opinion. It's not as good as the Sex and the City series - on tv, that is - but heading in that direction!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Wendy!.......2005-04-05

Wendy Wasserstein, the acerbic, often-hilarious Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, brings her trademark dry humor to this sweet collection of essays. Ms. Wasserstein writes what she knows about-theatre, New York City, looking for love, trying to lose weight, friends, and making the decision to have her first child at the age of 48.

Many of these essays are magical, but could be an acquired taste. For those of you who love biting autobiographical satire can look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Should be on the reading list of anyone who face job prospects after doing time.......2006-07-08

Millions of Americans have a conviction on their record and face additional challenges as they look for work with such on their record. Best Resumes And Letters For Ex-Offenders provides tips on how to work with such a checkered past, from understanding the basics of how resumes and letters work to tailoring an effective letter and seeking employment which takes an offense into account. Best Resumes And Letters For Ex-Offenders is the first job application reference book to specifically address the unique and formidable challenges ex-offenders face when applying for employment, and should be on the reading list of anyone who face job prospects after doing time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Ex-Offenders!.......2006-03-29

Ex-Offenders face barriers to employment. Barriers to employment may consist of poor education, bias, stigma, and most of all gaps in work history. Studies have shown that obtaining employment may reduce the likelihood of an ex-offender retruning to prison. How does an ex-offender compensate for the lost time on a resume? The answer: Best Resumes and Letters for Ex-Offenders. Best Resumes provide examples of ways the ex-offender can list his/her work experience in a resume without emphasizing time off for incarceration. In other words, the ex-offender can use the company that contracted with the prison as the employer. For instance, work history can be written this way: Prep Cook, Central Company, Inc., Austin, Texas, 2000-2004. The ex-offender highlights that he was a cook who worked for the Central Company (in the prison) from 2000 to 2004. The book emphasizes that any work experience (even work completed in prison) is important if it is related to the job requirement. Excellent book! Highly recommend!

    Book Description

Part history, part gossip-fest, and part fiction, The Secret Letters is compellingly set against the glittering backdrop of Hollywood and Washington during the 1950s and 1960s, and reveals Marilyn and Jackie as never before. Compulsively readable, the letters present the two legends as friends and enemies, the wife and the mistress, both in love with the same man. They reveal how much Jackie knew about Marilyn's affair with JFK and offer a chilling theory about Marilyn's death. Wendy Leigh, The New York Times bestselling author of Prince Charming: The John F. Kennedy, Jr., Story, has created a daring concept and has delivered it in fascinating detail. Each letter is based on real documents and true events, and is rich with factual research on both women, the turbulent era in which they lived and loved, and the real characters who touched their lives. A dazzling tour de force of empathy and imagination, The Secret Letters is a hypnotic read that will enthrall Marilyn and Jackie fans.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ludicrous but Entertaining!.......2007-04-16

I have never felt compelled to write a review for Amazon, but after reading this book, I felt I had to. I am by no means a Marilyn or Jackie fanatic, but I have read a few non-fiction books on them both. From the little knowledge I have on their personalities, I find it ridiculous that either of them would react or respond in the way portrayed by Ms. Leigh.

I realize that this is historical fiction, however, if you do decide to buy this book, remember that it is much more fiction than history. I find it amusing that the author tends to throw in historical events like Einstein passing, or the 50's quiz show scandal to somehow make the book seem authentic.

Also, from what little I know about Jackie, she was certainly aware of Jack's affair with Marilyn almost from the beginning. Jackie hated Marilyn and found her an annoyance. I hardly think she would have been so cordial to her husband's mistress.

However, as ludicrous as this book is, I have to admit it is a page turner and very entertaining. If you need an easy, somewhat dumbed down book to escape from reality for a while - this is the book for you!

1 out of 5 stars stupid idea for a book.......2007-02-27

why would anyone want to read a fictional book on MM and Jackie O??? especially when there are real, non-fiction books out there. they never wrote 1 letter to each other! i think ms. leigh is desperately trying to make $/cash in (both of these women are legends, so both of them is guaranteed extra $), so she decided to write this; stoop so low to make up a correspondonce between the two women. i'm not getting down on ms.leigh personally, i'm sure she's probably a good writer, great storyteller, and very intelligent. but the idea of this book seems pathetic. maybe it's me, but i just don't get it. i guess it's only for people who like fiction and made up stories to pass the time. i like the real stuff. i would never buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Crafted Tale of a Hollywood Legend and an Enigmatic First Lady..........2007-02-01

Jackie O and Marilyn Monroe are two of the most fascinating and legendary women in history. Marilyn remains to this day a silver screen goddess and Hollywood legend, even 45 years after her tragic death. Jacqueline Onassis, also known as Jackie Kennedy, was the iconically fashionable first lady, married to a beloved President who was eventually assassinated before her very eyes.

President Kennedy reportedly told British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan that if he didn't have nonmarital sex at least once a day he got a headache. His affairs were no mystery, and it was said that Jacqueline willingly turned a blind eye to them. Marilyn Monroe was one of J.F.K's most well-known mistresses. She fell in love with him, and in later years when her relationship with J.F.K ended, she also began a relationship with his brother, Bobby Kennedy.

This novel creates a fictional relationship between Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O. through the use of written correspondence letters. As a reader you are transported into these women's lives during the 1950's and 60's, a time of great turmoil for each of them. They exchange letters with each other and enter into a strange sort of friendship, though by all accounts they should be enemies. Each letter beautifully illustrates the personality and wit of the letter writer, and includes factual details obtained through extensive research of these two women, who were polar opposites, yet found themselves in love with the same man.

The story that unfolds is tinged with real-life events, such as Marilyn's infamous serenading of the President at his birthday gala. Although this is an imagined secret correspondence between Marilyn and Jackie, I almost wish it were real because these characters truly come alive before your eyes. Their thoughts and emotions are very real, and it makes you wonder if perhaps they *could* have had some sort of friendship.

I admire both of these women, and this book was a very special treat for me because I'm a very big Marilyn Monroe fan. Although this is a fictional account of events, I truly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to any chick lit lovers.

    4 out of 5 stars SHOCKING.......2006-05-16

So Jackie thought Onassis was ugly but she liked him because of his money - everyone knew that from day one. JFK had no morals; Hard to believe Mr. and Mrs. President have to pay for their meals in the White House. That's a disgrace. Marilyn Monroe was very smart even tho she played the dumb blonde. She wrote she'd never kill herself. I still believe that Jack and Robert had someone murder Marilyn as she knew too much and could cause problems; their solution: kill her, problem solved. Interesting about John Wayne being caught with a guy. He seemed so macho.

    1 out of 5 stars unfounded.......2006-05-05

I must agree with the initial reviewer. This book tries to compartmentalize the lives of two intelligent and fascinating women: one is the sensuous, voluptuous, and crazy woman; the other is the refined, asexual, matronly woman. Boo! These are misleading and misogynist portrayals that have been perpetuated by all things unfounded. Nothing original in that notion! I think historical fiction, as a genre, is also misleading. This is done by an author who does not, in the tradition of historical research, make hypotheses, and then tries to disprove them by researching documentary evidence. I suggest, the biography, by donald spoto. it is an immense tome that's focus is not solely on the studio portrayal of marilyn, but on the multi-faceted individual, and the events that potentially led to the image that exists today. it also makes a strong, and factual, case on her death (sans conspiracy theories, which are, in my opinion, inherently flawed).

    Book Description

Offered here in fresh translation are the letters of spiritual direction of two seventeenth century mystical writers, Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. These letters show us the daily attempts of laity, clergy, cloistered religious, bishops, and obscure windows to live in the authentic spirit of Jesus, and will speak not only to the historian of the period, but to all contemporary readers.

This collection is unique, since many of these letters, which are treasures of lived Salesian teaching, are translated for the first time into the English language. It is also the first time that the letters have been presented together, and that a scholarly and comprehensive introduction to the Salesian spiritual tradition, as embodied in the lives and writings of both Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, has been attempted.

It is probably worth recapping the history of this remarkable series of spiritual writings provided by Paulist Press. In the late 1970s Paulist set out to provide a limited number of volumes of great western spiritual thinkers and authors. The original goal, as I recall, was to produce approximately eighty volumes for subscription or individual purchase, spread out over a period of about twenty years. Apparently the success of the series has prompted Paulist to continue the series indefinitely, and at last count the series is now at over one hundred volumes as it approaches the end of its third decade. It is worth noting that over the past thirty years the Paulists have stretched the term "Western" to encompass about two thirds of the globe, but no one is the poorer for that.

The volume at hand was published in 1988 and follows the established outline of all the works to date, an introduction to the author[s] followed by the texts themselves. This volume includes an unremarkable preface by Henri Nouwen. It appears that in this particular work at least some of the letters are making their first appearance in English, although in other volumes [Augustine, Francis of Assisi, etc.] it would seem that the effort has been to bring forth either more contemporary or more readable translations of works already in English translation.

The introduction of ninety pages outlines in broad strokes the lives of both Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, as well as the general outline of Salesian spirituality. When compared to Franciscan or Jesuit spirituality, the Salesian ideal of a holy life may seem almost pedestrian, certainly not revolutionary. The emphases are fidelity to prayer, purity of intention, holiness within the marketplace, an assumption of a loving God and the attendant joy appropriate to that fact. The commentators are careful to give Jane her due, noting that she was not simply Francis de Sales's first disciple but a co-creator of the Salesian heritage.

There are 170 pages of letters of spiritual direction from both Francis and Jane. Francis's style reflects a French chivalry that might raise eyebrows today, given that he seemed to devote his considerable spiritual attention to women. Jane reflects a more practical style, given her role as foundress of the Visitandine Order of women, an unusual community for its time, which recruited more mature women with storied pasts and played down austerity for devotion, moderation, and charity. Jane is not the poet that Francis is, but as a widow with four grown children, her understanding of life is perhaps a touch more realistic. Jane's letters include some with a very practical bent: the management of miscreant novices, advice to her children about marriage, concerns about attached endowments, etc.

The commentators are wise to sketch the landscape of European Catholic life prior to the presentation of the letters themselves. The Salesian movement developed at the height of the counter-Reformation. The somewhat mellow style of Salesian/Visitandine spirituality and expression must be seen against the early seventeenth century rough and tumble ecclesiastical landscape, a time of bitter wrangling with matters of reform, sacramental discipline, free will and predestination. Roman Catholicism, less than a century removed from Luther, was quite skittish about novelty. It is worth remembering that at the time these letters were composed the scientist Galileo was coming under the scrutiny of Robert Bellarmine and the Inquisition. Neither Francis nor Jane appears to have raised the ire of the Inquisition, but the commentators hint that only Francis's open communication with Bellarmine allowed the somewhat unconventual Visitandines to survive.

One of the strengths of the Paulist Press series is its diversity. Not everyone will find this volume of letters an immediate source of stimulation or inspiration, nor is either writer particularly gifted in the art of spiritual metaphor. In terms of the entire series, this volume is definitely among the more sedate, though hardly without merit and useful for those of us who need to be called back to the basics. In fairness, it would probably serve the reader to examine three or four different volumes [eg. Julian of Norwich, Robert Bellarmine, Nil Sorsky, etc.] to form a judgment on the entire series.

Letters to Wendy's is an outrageous, tragic, genre-bending novel written over the course of a year on comment cards from the fast-food chain restaurant Wendy's. Through the letters, the book traces a year in the life and thoughts of an unnamed narrator obsessed not only by Biggies and Frosties, but also by consumerism, pornography, and mortality.

      4 out of 5 stars Shocking...If You Are a Child.......2006-02-25

The only thing wrong with this book, per se, is the fact that it goes on a little long. Still, I think it's the only book of poetry I would ever stick in my bathroom. It's hilarious and dark, which is the point. Anyone reading a book of poems about a fast food restaurant shouldn't expect it to be Billy Collins, and I can imagine that in writing about Wendy's and carrying on for as long as possible with the concept that the desire to create more violence and insanity was tempting. Frankly, I'm surprised he restrained himself the way he did. Joe spoke at my school to my class, listened to some of our feeble attempts at poetry, and then asked if anyone had any pharmies. I was about to offer, but it would have looked bad in front of the professor. Regardless, this is a funny and intelligent book, sort of the poetry version of Super Size Me. Good stuff, worth a look. Don't take it too seriously though, because that would just be p ussy s hit.

5 out of 5 stars Reads like a tone poem, fits like a ..... heel?.......2005-12-08

If you don't like slightly obscure, definately off color, nuianced, weird humor...this isn't for you.

But, I do! I love this book. It's not exactly comedy, it's definately not serious, it's kind of poetic. It is what it is. When I read the letters I assumed they were all originally written on "Comments from our Customers" cards and deposited in a Comments Box. Anyway, if you don't try to label it and just read it, it's definately hilarious.

The format (one paragraph long "letter" per page) is great for bedtime reading when you're too tired for narrative and in the mood for humor.

4 out of 5 stars fluorescent ceilings ETC.......2004-11-24

i read this in the bookstore in one sitting; it is immensely entertaining, & the author has some excellent turns of phrase, plus who has not at one point confessed some horrible secret on a We'd Like to Hear Your Thoughts card, or wanted to do so.

unfortunately some of the letters degenerate into mindless genital-centric bores without any redeeming prose elements, it seems one cannot get away from this in any form of literature. but vague & nebulous social commentary does not belong in reviews so i'll put this tape over my mouth & we'll all be a lot happier.

but for the most part i loved it, very surreal at times & surprisingly perceptive. i am definitely interested in reading more of his work.

4 out of 5 stars Wendy's is the latest thing in literature.......2004-09-07

I have never encountered a book like this before, laid out in such a snippet-like format where each page is a chapter. I also thought it was interesting that there were no page numbers. Apparently, we were supposed to use the dates of these "sayings" as page markers in the event we found ourselves without a bookmark or some other method of remembering our place. I thoroughly enjoyed Wenderoth's willingness to risk offending people in order to deliver on his point that we are all human, despite our proclivities and weaknesses. Good work.
