      5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Soothing.......2007-04-17

      "The music will help slow your heart rate, deepen your breathing, and move your brainwaves in the direction of calmness. Think of this CD as an acoustical balm for your nervous system to be played whenever you feel the need for peace, stillness, and tranquility." - From the liner notes

      The hurried pace of overcommitted lives and manic striving is a breeding ground for stress and disease. Stress hormones bathe our delicate nervous system resulting in the fight-or-flight response once reserved for survival, resulting in fatigue, fuzzy thinking and irritability.

      Fortunately, there are wonderful stress-reduction products out on the market like Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self-Healing: Relax and De-Stress. Joshua Leeds, an expert in psychoacoustics, has designed this CD to soothe the body's primary pulses--heart rate, brainwaves, and breathing rate.

      In a sonic progression spanning 60 minutes, Leeds has selected and re-arranged instrumental compositions by renowned composers expressly for inducing the relaxation response. By arranging the musical selections so that each piece is progressively slower in tempo and simplified in melodic complexity, gentle healing sounds can relieve an overtaxed nervous system.

      With lovely performances by the Apollo Chamber Ensemble, the Relax and De-Stress CD features the piano, cello, and oboe arranged by Leeds with four psychoacoustic techniques in mind:

      1. Resonance - The impact of one vibration upon another

      2. Entrainment - A natural process whereby heartbeat, breath and brainwaves speed up or slow down to match an external rhythm

      3. Auditory Pattern Identification - Passive hearing techniques designed to relieve the mind of the tendency to "work" to figure out musical patterns

      4. Beauty - Resolution between dissonance and consonance found in harmonies, melodies, and performances

      Here are the eleven musical pieces found on the Relax and De-Stress CD:

      * Aria Lento by Bach
      * Reverie by Debussy
      * Concerto for Oboe and Strings Sarabande (with nature sounds) by Corelli-Barbirolli
      * Arioso from Cantata No. 156 - Bach
      * Intermezzo Op. 116 No. 4 in E Major - Brahms
      * Concerto for Oboe K. 314, Adagio non troppo by Mozart
      * Cello and Piano Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65 Largo by Chopin
      * Sonata Andante transcribed from Cello Suite No. 3 by Marcello
      * Sonata in A Major D959 Andantino by Schubert
      * Winter, Largo from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi
      * Meditation by Moussorgsky
      * Theme from Largo of "The New World Symphony" by Dvorak

      I've listened to Dr. Andrew Weil's Music for Self-Healing: Relax and De-Stress several times and find it to be very relaxing. Aesthetically speaking, these aren't musical selections I'd put in my stereo to listen to for pleasure, yet I can tell a measurable difference in both my mood and bodily state after I begin listening to this CD.

      In fact, I'm listening to Relax and De-Stress right now and I'm noticing that my breathing has deepened and slowed--and that tension in my shoulders and neck seems to have melted away.

      If you're looking for a soothing CD to put in the stereo after work or perhaps to listen to while you make dinner or get ready for bed, I can recommend with confidence the Relax and De-Stress compilation arranged by Joshua Leeds.

      (Note: Although the Amazon.com description says "audiobook", it is NOT. This is a psychoaucoustically arranged musical CD WITH sixteen pages of liner notes.)

        5 out of 5 stars Bach is a river, not a brook.......2006-02-27

        Bach has to come pretty much at the top of any list of composers. We seem to be in a bit of a Dark Age of classical music these days when, as Giles once remarked to Buffy, "singers are chosen for their ability to dance." So it is rather important that some of us at least keep the candle of musical beauty burning in the dark.

        Well, after that bit of effusion, perhaps I should review the book! This is an inexpensive reprint of the Bach Gesellschaft edition and as such is unimpeachable. There is no finer music than this and it's cheap. Also, nice reproduction of the best portrait of Bach on the cover.

        Oh, the title of my review is something Beethoven once said about Bach. In German, a 'bach' is a brook.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-08-20

        A few years ago I purchased an inexpensive violin with the intent of learning to play it. Not expecting any kind of virtuosity, I thought I could learn enough to perhaps play in an amateur string quartet or something like that. I knew it would take time and be a lot of work, but I've been playing the piano for a long time and figured a different instrument would be a good change of pace.

        After a few months of cramped fingers, a stiff neck, and a bow arm that was more suited to sawing lumber, I gave up. Not that I'm a quitter by any means, but I am a realist. Besides, the sounds that I produced would cause every feline in the neighborhood to congregate outside my window. Don't know what my 'music' sounded like to them, but do you realize how much noise a herd of howling cats can make? But all was not lost. The violin hangs above the piano, next to a copy of a Renoir painting. It looks very nice there, and there it shall stay.

        But I'll always have a fascination for violin playing. Hence, I bought this book, primarily for the Chaconne for solo violin. I was familiar with the Busoni transcription, and even flirted with the idea of learning the Brahms transcription for left hand only (by the way, I'm a lefty, but that didn't make the Brahms any easier!). But I wanted to see for myself the demands Bach made on the poor fiddle player.

        Bach can be a very demanding composer, but the demands are always in service to the music he wrote. The Chaconne deserves every accolade and legendary status that it has. It is a truly phenomenal piece of absolute music that taxes the interpreter absolutely in every way. It is one of those pieces that exists in the stratosphere, positively unique in its makeup and emotion.

        Dover does it again! There is much music in this volume besides the Chaconne, which would be worth the price itself. If it's true you get what you pay for, then you get a lot of music for not much money with this edition.

        Recommended for music students, performers, and even for people that have a violin hanging on the wall!

        3 out of 5 stars No separate piano parts.......2002-07-13

        I bought the book and thought to have both violin and piano parts on separate sheet. Unfortunately, the violin sonatas are printed in form of score containing both violin and piano. I have to copy the score for my piano accompaniment. Other than that the Fugue and Patitas are great. Overall this book is good for personal collection and I can never stop playing them.

        3 out of 5 stars Mmmm, not a good edition for a violinist.......2001-12-01

        First, I studied the Bach Partitas from the Carl Fisher Edition, and some day I lost it. I see the portrait of this work, and I liked and buy. Bach is phenomenal; and an important part of the violinist life, and this edition has a good distribution of the work, but the edition is not good, for example the Arpeggios of the Ciaccona are edited in a very old style, and not depured the different legato, sincerely is very difficult to undertand the intention of the editor; for the sonatas the edition could be better if the work includes the violin part separated from the Piano.
        I choose three stars because, this work is very important, and the edition not help so much to explore all the work, because some passages will generate to a new violinist many ambiguities.

        5 out of 5 stars The brilliant mind of J.S. Bach.......2000-06-19

        I have been a musician for 30+ years. I was a theory and compostion major in college. But I just took up the violin about a year ago. Of course, everything in this collection is way over my head, but I have considered it a joy to plow through a few bars at a time, picking up what I could of the craftsmanship of the guy who virtually invented music as we know it. It's amazing to watch him compose with complete anticipation of the performer. He gives you breaks when you need breaks. He gives you open strings when you need to hear intonation. He gives you a hold just in time to move to another position. Yet, if you listen to the partitas on CD, it sounds totally spontaeous, seamless, and fluid. It is a fulfilling exercise simply to listen to the CD, with violin in hand, as you follow along in the music. I will be learning these pieces for the next 30 years. I will never cease to be challenged by them. And their mastery will always be a very satisfying quest. The more I look into the mind of J.S. Bach through these compositions, the more I appreciate his genious!

        Book Description

        This wonderful book is written for musicians seeking to build or extend a sonata repertoire. Analyses are given of both well-known and many lesser-known pieces of music, with recommendations on performance as well as descriptions of difficulties. Many are suitable for student or amateur musicians. This is mainly a book for violinists, though; many of the keyboard parts of these pieces are little more than continuo accompaniment. The second volume, detailing the music of Beethoven onward, contains descriptions of music that puts the keyboardist on more equal footing with the violinist.

        This book is for the fairly serious scholar of music interested in an in-depth examination of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. It is not for beginners in the study of music history. A high degree of familiarity with music theory and with the works in question, as well as with Beethoven's piano sonatas and many other works, is assumed. In that context, however, the book is a treasure, with a great deal of truly original and captivating insights into these unique and emblematic works. This originality of a necessity creates rather sharp stylistic and theoretical differences among the perspectives of the various authors. Seek the uniform taxonomical approach elsewhere. Musical citations are abundant and beautifully laid out on the page, although occasionally their sheer size demands that they not be placed immediately opposite the relevant text. The notes and bibliographical references are very useful to students seeking further study of the composer and his world.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove of Wonderful Music.......2006-11-10

        This volume is a bargain at any price, and at this price, it is an exceptional find. It contains every sonata Corelli wrote (Opus 1-5), giving anyone interested in playing Baroque chamber music a lifetime's worth of beautiful compositions to explore. The format is large and the music itself is clearly printed and extremely readable. Though it is fully bound, it easily opens completely, allowing perfect performance copies to be made. Even if you don't think you will ever play more than a handful of the sonatas, the total collection is a pleasure to have in hand to follow along while listening to Corelli's work. I won't take the time here to sing the many praises of Corelli's music, but suffice it to say, his trio and solo sonatas are the standard by which all Baroque sonatas are measured.

        5 out of 5 stars the orpheus of the violin.......2002-12-28

        extremely good edition of these classic works. the violin sonatas include not only the straightforward version of the first print (Jan 1, 1700) but the elaborate ornaments included in later publications "as Corelli plays them" -- a fascinating light on what people actually did with this music. every violinist should play these -- contemporaries called them "the very staff of life."
