Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-08-25
If you are new to Blender and 3d animation, this book will help you to "open your mind to the possibilities". You will learn to build and animate your own character step by step. Easy to follow and very well explained. The included DVD has a lot of animation samples and source files used in the book. Go for it!
Great Blender Intro and Character Design.......2007-08-17
Of all the books I've read on 3D, this is the first that actually has been useful and direct to me. I have been using Blender 3D for a year now, but I found that there was alot of cool features that I missed that I then learned from this book.
Besides a great introduction, this book flows smoothly with the creation of a face from only a reference photo (with all the intermediate steps to get there), and then the rest of the book is showing how to build a a fully rigged (ready for animation) character from scratch. I am so amazed with this book.
This is a definitely a worthwhile book. I teach Blender 3D for a organization at Texas A&M University, and I suggest this to them all.
Animation Motivated Novices .......2007-08-13
Great book for the Blender Project. The intro says it all, for Blender Pros and highly motivated novices. Great tutorial and all the pieces included on CD.
excellent deal.......2007-06-13
This product arrived around a month from the day the purchase was made. the product arrived in excellent conditions, And I also found it{s cheaper than in other websites.
Exactly what I needed........2007-06-01
I've been learning Blender for a while now, piecing it together from stray tutorials and such, but with this very affordable book, I've found exactly what I needed. I already knew a lot of what the book covers, but it helped fill in some gaps that most online tutorials take for granted, and gave me a whole, more complete view of how to go about my business with Blender. I would definately buy another book from this author.

After reading this book, game programmers will have the tools and knowledge to master Open Source game development.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not too deep.......2006-11-10
See this book as a general introduction to developing games and open source software, but some definitions are often shallow and/or briefly explained. You'll have to follow its many references to gather the whole knowledge together. Recommended for those with good skills in C++ and class programming but are willing to build some board games for fun. Interestingly, it gives some insight into AI and 3D gfx, but never deep enough for someone to start any serious project. The attached CDROM contains complete projects which does help a lot (but nothing that you can't find in the Web).
Open Source Game Programming : QT Games For KDE, PDAs, And Windows (Game..........2006-06-05
This book, by Thompson Learning, is an excellent book in that it not only goes into the code aspect of game creation using QT and a C++ compiler, but gives some insight into what it takes to design a particular game program solution.
However, even though it does not take a whole lot of programming experience to program a game, one does need to have at least a working knowledge of form creation using (QT or a Visual program language) and some knowledge of a C++ compiler.
Remember, to show a form it must be called by code which includes at least one (Show form) code block.
I would say the programming level needed to use this book effectively is at least advanced beginning. And I believe some experience in the Linux version of QT and the Linux GNU C++ compliler would be very helpful.
Excellent!.......2006-04-24
Well written, concise, clear -- this is book is the perfect introduction for anyone who wants to code using Qt and KDE as well as for anyone who wants to get into game programming as a hobby.
A must for Linux and KDE game developers.......2006-01-07
This book contains everything you need to know to develop game programs on Linux and the KDE desktop, with information on how to make your games portable to Windows, Mac and PDA. It covers a wide range of topics in a very clear fashion - technicalities of various platforms, use of Qt canvas 2D graphics and OpenGL 3D graphics, sound, artificial intelligence, path finding, maths and physics of games and network play, to name just a few. The references to websites and other texts, at the end of each chapter, are alone worth their weight in gold.
If only I had had this book available when I sat down to develop a game 4 years ago. I would have saved about a year of my life, which I spent finding out things the hard way!

Book Description
Dziga Vertov was one of the greatest innovators of Soviet cinema. The radical complexity of his work--in both sound and silent forms--has given it a central place within contemporary theoretical inquiry. Vertov's writings, collected here, range from calculated manifestos setting forth his heroic vision of film's potential to dark ruminations on the inactivity forced upon him by the bureaucratization of the Soviet state.

a really good collection of his writings. I couldn't help but enjoy the naive and ideological enthusiam for his vision of filmmaking, especially when considering the box office rubbish that gets churned out every week. this book is ideal for anyone interested in film from that era or who has strong ideas about how to make films

Finally--a book for the vinyl-phile who wishes to convert LPs to MP3s! The Little Audio CD Book, a joint effort by Bob Starrett and Josh McDaniel, bridges the gap between vinyl and computer/CD audio. Providing a wealth of information about hardware and software choices, the authors lead us from desire to fulfillment in the world of digital re-recording of analog LP or tape to computer. Extensive use of both tutorials and screen shots make this volume easy to read and follow.
The book introduces the CD recorder, and explains the differences between CD-R and CD-RW. Various brand names are described, along with the explanation that "in some cases, cost does not equal quality." Along with the descriptions of the various types of media that are available, and explanations of the different read and write speeds, Starrett and McDaniel demystify the computer CD-R.
The authors do an admirable job of presenting all of the concepts that are involved in producing an audio CD on the home computer. The sections that are devoted to audio software choices and system configuration are worthy of enthusiastic praise. More raves are in order for the coverage on recording from vinyl or cassettes. It's in these two areas that The Little Audio CD Book really shines. If you follow the steps as outlined in chapter 7, you'll be able to make a quality digital recording from vinyl in a surprisingly short amount of time. The authors' ability to anticipate common stumbling blocks and many of the more arcane problems that one might encounter is notable.
If you have hundreds of irreplaceable LPs (as many of us do) and live without the hope of ever seeing them in CD format, you can stop despairing right now. With this book, which is filled with handy tutorials, you get a step-by-step tour through the process of recording your favorite music onto your hard drive. The presentations of how to edit the hiss, clicks, and pops out of the resulting WAV file, and how to prepare and finally record your favorite jams onto a CD, alone are worth the price of this superlative book. Buy it, study it, treasure it! --Robert D. Gately

Customer Reviews:
Maybe.......2006-11-12
Some may find this book of use but it didn't help me much. I'm going to try the Nero 6 book even though the reviews aren't that great. Hopefully it will get me more detailed help in using the Nero filters.
Burn Baby Burn.......2005-08-02
This is a must for anyone who is serious about recording any audio file and reproducing it to the highest possible standard.
Great for newcomers to CD Burning!.......2004-08-02
For making audio CDs at home, this book covers it all. Not much hear for the experienced audiophile but newcomers to CD making will find much to gain by reading this book. Chapters cover vinyl-to-CD, Mp3-to-CD, cassette-to-CD and on and on. There is even a chapter that covers making "Enhanced CDs". That is, those CDs that not only play on an audio player but have additional functionality when placed in a CD-ROM drive. Much of the book discusses various audio editing software and what you can do with it. Highly recommend to all but those who already have
considerable experience in making their own music CDs.
Not much for Mac Users.......2004-07-15
The book offers a wealth of information for PC users, but unlike the many very common guides which include illustrations for both Mac and PC formats, only 3 of this book's 200+ pages offer specific guidance for Mac-users.
Samples, examples, and illustrations are of the authors' favorite PC Programs while only mentioning Mac options on one or two pages.
I will offer that theory, practice, and concept are pretty thorough but as for practicality for Mac Users, I beg, please guys... do a Mac version.
Oustanding book!.......2004-07-14
Very well written & concieved, just wish it had more info about CD-Rs themselves, and updated version might include info about the Ultradisc CD-R from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab - the world's ultimate CD-R...

C++ For Game Programmers (Game Development Series)
ASIN: 1584504978 |
Book Description
With the cost of game development increasing regularly, studios are looking for innovative ways to reduce their budgets without compromising quality. At the same time, developers are looking toward more complex and customizable software, tools, and libraries to build truly next-generation games. These goals have traditionally been mutually exclusive, but open source software can solve both problems by providing game developers with free, high-quality tools and libraries for every aspect of the development process. Graphics, audio, physics, networking, and movie playback code are all available for the taking; developed, written, tested, and ready to use. This software is complemented by a wide range of end-user tools for both the programmer and artist including graphic editors, IDEs, MIDI sequencers, and 3D editors. The Game Developer's Open Source Handbook uncovers this world of open source software and teaches management and game developers what code is available, where to get it, how to incorporate it into existing processes, and, most important, how to adhere to the license agreements for redistribution. The book is for all game developers, especially the "Indies," who want to use the wealth of free software in their own games to help increase the scope of the technology available and reduce the fi nancial burden. Members of the Linux fraternity will also fi nd it a useful insight into the methods by which these libraries can be applied into constructing a game. In addition, the book will be required reading for the producers and systems analysts of game studios who want to see the big picture. This must-have resource introduces a new world of software, and a new way of developing games for the 21st Century.
Customer Reviews:
A Guide to What Software is Available and How to Use It.......2007-02-12
It's reliable. As soon as a new version of the software ships; hundreds, if not thousands of people go in and try to break it. If they break it, then they, or any of hundreds of others immediately go to fix it. ==It's fast. The Linux core is much smaller, much faster than any of the various Windows operating systems.
And, of course, it's FREE. And that's a very good price. A full set of the software needed to do gaming in today's market is a pocket full of dollars. If it's open source, it's simply free. Just to prove it, ther's a CD included with this book and it contains some 120 gaming software packages.
This book is aimed at the newcommer to the open source movement. It discusses things like the licensing requirements and what the software packages can do rather than being a guide to detailed programming. The goal is to direct you in the right direction so that you get the benefits of the open source movement quickly without having to go looking for what packages you might need.

Book Description
Now that Director supports JavaScript and DVD-Video, it's hard to come up with a reason not to use it for all of your interactive Web content creation needs. Buy this book, and you soon will be! In this volume (which is based on the curriculum employed by Macromedia's authorized trainers), veteran author
David Mennenoh uses a series of project-based, hands-on tutorials to introduce you to every aspect of interactive content creation with Director MX 2004. As you work your way through the book's four major projects--a portfolio presentation, a training log (which employs an interactive calendar), a 2D game, and a 3D puzzle game--you'll cover topics ranging from setting up the interface to getting interactive, adding video, using MIAWs, packaging your projects for distribution, creating game assets, producing models, and more. Also covered are all of Director MX 2004's newest features: cross-platform publishing, Flash MX 2004 integration, and more. A companion CD includes the lesson files and media you'll need to complete the book's projects.
Customer Reviews:
Very Dry and a difficult read.......2005-12-02
to be honest - this book was impossible to read. director is an exciting program and this book was impossible to read, i felt like i was trying to make it through mobey dick, and everyone knows, its hard to learn when you aren't engaged. I bought this from borders, and im planning on bringing it back there. I bought director MX 2004 Bible instead, and within reading 2 pages i bought it knowing i'd love it. This is a manual, a very dry manual.
Awesome book.......2005-08-05
This is a truly awesome book. Except for the scattered typos, the book really teaches a lot. You actually work through entire visually appealing real world type projects. The author takes you through step by step with plenty of screenshots to keep you on the right track.
Ambitious and mean... but not lean.......2005-08-02
A useful and more advanced alternative in relation to the Demystified series and the like. I don't know if this is really "advanced", but it's coverage of themes like creating and managing a SQL database, building a shooting spaceships 2D game, a 3D memory game, and others, was what I considered advanced for years. It was delightful finding myself making this exercises with relative ease. Not for absolute beginners, it requires some 50 hours to devote to this material. Intermediate-advanced.
Save your time and money!!!.......2005-03-06
I bought this book thinking it would teach me a great deal about Director. I had previous experience, but I wanted to further my learning. Training From the Source has always came out with great books and I thought that this would be great for learning Director more in depth. This is also the required text book for a class I am taking. And everyone is having a frustrating time with it, even the instructor.
The chapter on the 3-D game is ok, but it's the database lesson that has proved to be a major frustration. It says at the beginning of the lesson that it takes two hours to complete. It took me more like twelve. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. After double checking the code, I knew I didn't make any mistakes. So I checked the lesson file that came on the disk. It turned out that some of the sprites on the stage on the score were placed on the wrong channels. Fortunately, I had previous experience with Lingo, and was able to fix the problem. This book is not ideal for people new to Director. The graphing lesson and movie in a window lesson has proved to be equally frustrating.
In conclusion, if you are new to Director and want to build a basis for learning it, or even a novice who wants to build on their skills, then don't buy this book. Like the previous reviewer said, It is a waste of time and money.
A complete waste of time and money........2005-01-15
I bought this book for a college course thinking it would help introduce me to Director MX 2004. While it does serve some purpose, you would be better off spending your hard-earned money on any of the other ones out there. I am only two chapters into it and already I have encountered six errors, three debilitating ones that have caused a week's loss in productivity among the entire class, until our next class meeting when our professor could explain what the hell went wrong.

Book Description
The popularity and pervasiveness of film and television in 21st-century life is inescapable. Whether viewed as entertainment, educational, or cultural forms, the effect of these media on our lifestyles and attitudes is unmistakable. No wonder an increasing number of academics, students, and laypeople are drawn to study their particular appeal. Mark Emmons's magnum opus is a true labor of love. International in scope, it offers 1,244 substantially annotated entries, organized by topic. Its focus is movies and television shows: how they are produced; the people who make and appear in them; their content, their distribution and exhibition; and their reception by audiences, reviewers, critics, and scholars. Beginning with general guides, dictionaries and encyclopedias, the book then turns to filmographies, filmmakers, and filmmaking respectively. "Filmographies" lists films and television shows in the categories of national cinema and genre, made by studios or filmmakers, or featuring various groups of people. "Filmmakers" includes biographies and credits for filmmakers and actors. "Filmmaking" includes reference sources on making film and television shows. An indispensable guide for librarians, faculty, students, neophyte filmmakers, and fans everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
An Updated Bibliography.......2006-06-25
This book is a bibliography of the literature of film and television. It has a listing of some 1244 books on the film and television industry. The entries are broken down into categories such as journals, country, genres, formats, studios, ethnic groups, gender and sexual orientation, making films, fans, and more.
Note that this book does not contain information on these subjects, it contains references to books or other publications that have information on these subjects. As such it is intended to be of use to the serious researcher or to librarians.
Each entry contains a standard reference giving the title, author, publication information and a short description of the book. This book is an updated version of the now twenty year old Kim Fisher book. It is updated to late 2005.

Customer Reviews:
Information Delivered with Arrogance.......2002-06-01
This book has many typos and incorrect descriptions. It's disheartening to see such a half...attempt at writing. Especially, one that has the Macromedia logo on it. They have the right idea, but they need a MORE QUALIFIED AUTHOR.
Not for beginners.......2002-05-14
I am quite familiar with other Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Luckily that experience helped me get through some of the lessons in this book. I am teacher who teaches teachers how to design web pages, and because of my experience with total beginners I know this book is ABSOLUTELY NOT for beginners.
There is too much assumption that people will know how to do things or where to find object, palettes or whatever is necessary for the lesson. At the end of the lessons we are told what we have learned but there is no rhyme or reason to it because there is no explanation of WHY we have learned it, and how it will be useful in the future. Finally, at the end of each chapter you save a half done movie that you never get to work on again in the book. Instead in the successive lesson you open up one in which many changes have been made, which you don't understand since you are not the one who made it and with which you are not familiar. So you begin each successive lesson with something kind of familiar, but not really, making it even harder for beginners.
I expected more out of book published by Macromedia for Macromedia.
Great tutorial.......2002-01-30
After trying and returning a couple of other Flash books I bought the Training from the Source book and loved it right from the start. I do have a problem in lesson three and am looking for an eratta on the book if there is one. I found one typo so far that makes lesson 2 look funny. (Pg 58 #7 the Height and Width are reversed.)
In lesson 3 I can't find the Neptune Logo Symbol in the common library.
Too concise for beginners.......2001-10-27
After following word for word each instruction in the book, as I reached the half-way point I realized that I really hadn't learned enough to make my own Flash movies without constantly going back to the book as a reference. Indeed, I did in fact make the Flash movies provided as learning examples in the lessons.......but at the expense of having to almost constantly stop and figure out what it was I was doing for explanations were brief. I understand that many of the graphics were already created to save me time, but when most of an entire site was completed for me already.......it just seems that I now know bits and pieces of information about Flash but not enough to feel like I've got a handle on the program. The book does, however, cover many advanced topics that I may choose to learn in the future. However, I think this book should have been 150 pages longer to better explain itself and also to help the user develop a better feel for the program before moving on to more advanced lessons.
I'm using it as a textbook.......2001-08-22
This book is a really great introduction to Macromedia Flash 5. It is so good, that I'm actually using it as a text book for a class on Flash I am teaching.
The amount of information jammed into this tiny book is very impressive. The author simplifies very complex topics and makes it very easy for people with no or little Flash experience to learn a great deal about the program very quickly.
I highly recommend this book. Last semester, I had to require two books to get the same information that this one is providing. It is just excellent, anyone saying otherwise is just crazy.
Average customer rating:
- Scripts are working
- No longer being supported, can't finish lessons
- Good only up to lesson 8
- It's good for learning the basics, but that's it
- You probably want to look elsewhere.
