A great book for studying and teaching about masculinity.......2000-06-29
Bloom's well-researched study of baseball collectors in the 1980s is a wonderful text for studying and teaching about masculinity and popular culture. His book raises important questions about the crisis of masculinity in the latter part of the twentieth century, and the ways that popular culture practices like baseball card collecting both challenged and, ultimately, shored up traditional gender boundaries between men and women. Bloom's work also focuses extensively on the issue of nostalgia, particularly the idealized memory of 1950s American boyhoods. An accessible and engaging tone makes this a fine text to use in popular culture classes or in gender studies classes.

Finally something intelligently written!.......1999-02-01
As a baseball card collector for over 20 years, I have read countless articles in countless publications about baseball cards and card collecting. Almost every one of the has focused on either the financial aspects of the hobby or on how great it is to be a collector. John Bloom has written a thought provoking and academic book which examines WHY we collect.
While I do not agree with some of the authors positions, specifically about race and homoerotocism, I feel that they are well thought out and presented. His description of the MCC, a card collectors club, is very similar to my own experiences in the two clubs to which I have belonged in the past, and offers a unique look at the pettiness and power struggles that often arise in these organizations.
Many collectors and hobby writers came out very strongly against this book, but I think that many of them looked at Blooms' conclusions as an attack on the hobby of card collecting. They are not.
While the academic tone of the book can make it difficult to read at times, the insights that it offers and the fact that it at least makes the reader THINK about the nature of collecting are reason enough to read "House of Cards".
Acadamia runs amok, to make sensational, exaggerated point.......1997-08-23
Collecting baseball cards evokes memories of crisp wax paper; the assault of a preadolescent nose with the aroma of sickly sweet, often stale, powder-sugar coated bubble gum; the thrill of your first Ted Williams card; and of clothes-pinning your sixth Pedro Ramos in your bicycle spokes.
In stark contrast, Bloom's book portrays collectors in the angry, white man role; discusses the collector's insecurities about their rapidly declining social position; their disturbing attitudes toward blacks and women; and their apparent inability to get a date in high school. Why is Bloom saying such disparaging things about the people who collect baseball cards?
Bloom spent some time in the late 1980s attending baseball card shows in Minnesota. His observations at the shows, sports card shops, interviews with hobbyists, and secondary research, form the basis for this adaptation of his doctoral thesis.
Baseball card collecting can evolve from a children's hobby to an adult's business. But the hobby took on an entirely new dynamic during the Reagan years. Many American boys collected cards, and in the economic boom of the 1980s, price's escalated, and collectors found (if mom hadn't gotten there first) treasure troves in long-forgotten, old shoe boxes. Unfortunately, many believed, including Bloom, that the newfound wealth corrupted the hobby.
Bloom's typical adult collector is white, male, and lower-middle class. In turn, Bloom blames these card collectors for failed marriages, deceit, deception, the manipulation of children, the exclusion and derision of women, and distancing the races.
But is the assertion valid that adult collectors are sexist, merely because the majority are male? Similarly, are they racist because a majority are white? Is the fact that Mickey Mantle's 1952 Topps rookie card sells at a higher price than Willie Mays' 1952 card, justifiable evidence of racism among the collecting enthusiasts as the author brazenly maintains?
The impact and social ramifications of collecting baseball cards appear to be stretched beyond the realm of plausibility to make an alarming, though questionable, point. Is it possible that collecting bits of cardboard, emblazoned with the images of childhood heroes, really be the cause of this much social discord?
But the author has missed a critical point. Bloom states that the cards, in and of themselves, "are of no real consequence." Most collectors would vehemently disagree. Baseball cards derive their value by resurrecting the reminiscences of the collector's youthful heroes. There is a collective social memory which envelops the collectors and their cards. The fact that trade guides indicate that selected cards may have some extrinsic value is nice, but for the majority of collectors, not paramount. The same native affinity does not permeate collecting spoons, stamps or coins, or even football or basketball cards. The fact that these collectibles are baseball cards matters a great deal.

Kind of Silly!!!.......2007-07-02
I guess I thought that this book would have information about how to train and prepare for a variety of circumstances and eat right and get fit but it had more information about things like dressing sexy to capture a man's attention or making a man be your "slave" by treating him like crap and keeping him "coming back for more" and other silly things like that, which I am not really interested in.
No girl should be without this book.......2007-01-05
From How to Choke a Man With Your Bare Thighs, to How to Give Birth Under Pressure, this book is extremely informative for any modern day gal. There's a very interesting article on How to Outwit a Sasquatch, who knew that baring your teeth to the "Yeti" may be interpreted as an act of aggression...? And need I mention the article of How to Fend Off the Undead??
The book comes complete with an entire article on Action Heroine Hairstyles along with dozens of other TV and movie skills.
Get the book, is has a plethora of useful information, and like I said, no modern day girl should be without this handy purse size book!! (fits most Coach bags)
Superwoman meets couch patato.......2006-03-19
Another thrift shop bargain and what a bargain it was!
I laughed myself silly when I read this book, however I did enjoy reading it even if it did take itself too seriously at times but perhaps this was a subtle tongue in cheek gesture, I don't know but it was fun!
Each major section starts with a quote from either a Chick Flick or a film that has a strong female protagonist, I liked this touch and one of my favourite films "Aliens 2" appeared in it a couple of times with some excellent quotes that most of us would recognise.
This is a book for all you girls out there who secretly want to be Lara Croft, Buffy, or the next Darkangel, it give you such tips as how to drink a man under the table, escape from kidnappers, how to get your hair like your favourite heroine, surf like a demon, survive in the wilderness with nothing more than matches, a bit of string and a paperclip, as well showing you how to be someone else for a research project.
My favourite mini section in the book was on how to bluff your way into the world of the working girl, the hot tips given in the book actually came from a working girl who knows the ropes and at the time of publication she was working in the famous Bunny Ranch in Nevada.
This is the sort of book you would take on a long trip with you, it will keep you entertained that is for sure, and it is also the sort of book you can browse through again and again and some of the tips and suggestions in it are actually quite useful though I don't think I will be trying out "how to be a superwoman" tip any time soon!
A crackingly good book for the couch patato hero in all of us who is just dying to get out and show the world what she is made of...if she had the energy that is!!!!!
Fun gag gift, quick distraction.......2005-07-26
This is a great gift for the she-woman in your life, and a fun one to pass around among friends. If you are familiar with "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook" and the others of the like, you'll know what fun you are in for (the author actually wrote "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Dating & Sex").
There are some memorable lessons in here, all accompanied by terrific illustrations. Don't expect this book to change your life, but it will give you a few laughs and perhaps some tips on getting out of sticky situations.
Great Book.......2004-12-30
Great book with real live advice about survival techniques. Similar to the other Survival Handbooks with First Aid-type illustrations, this is handy for those who would like to find out how real live people like stunt doubles, firefighters, and police officers survive perilous situations. Other recommended books: The Action Hero's Handbook, Queen B's Guide to Being a Superheroine, Worst-Case Scenario Handbook, SAS Survival Handbook, and Spy Survival Handbook.

This eye-opening book links gender-based pay and scholarship inequity with male violence and male domination in sports and society at large. As this book points out, athletes who rape and male coaches who brag of beating their wives are often dismissed by our culture with a "boys will be boys" attitude. Formerly competitive co-ed sports have been replaced with sex-segregated sports after a woman wins against male competitors. Those dubious signals sent to boys such as "don't throw like a girl" are all designed to glorify masculinity and keep it safe from so-called female interference and contamination.
Book Description
Male coaches who molest the female players entrusted to their care...Sexual assault of college women by male athletes...The rise of "sports bars" and topless golf...All-male teams that receive the lion's share of college athletic budgets, despite laws to the contrary. Blending eloquent personal testimonies and surprising factual evidence, author and athlete Mariah Burton Nelson explores how our culture glorifies brutality and examines how th rise of female power in this country has been matched by a growing male contempt, reflected in the increased popularity of the "manly" sports--football, basketball and hockey.
Explosive, insightful, often witty and always thought-provoking, here is an essential, in-depth look at America's male-dominated sports mania, and at the dangerous attitudes fostered behind the closed locker room door.

A Must Read for College Athletes.......2002-07-29
This book does a great job of describing many of the obstacles faced by female athletes. It has greatly helped me redefine my athletic goals and understand what I may encounter as I continue my athletic pursuits.
Amazing. Could NOT stop reading this book........2001-05-21
This book is truly enlightening. While i know some of her claims are contestable (as all theory is), i still want to sew her thoughts into my brain so they will be available for instant access and referral. I have always been wary of our sports culture; Nelson tells me why. Nelson in no way condemns athletics or sports, but rather the sexism that has evovled around American sports culture, and the possible reasons for this evolution. Unfortunately i know that this book would not be palatable for many sports fans; for that reason it is so utterly poignant.
Be careful that this doesn't make you start to hate men........2001-01-28
... While it does have some valid points regarding sexism in sports and sexism of male athletes, it takes things a little far. Reading for any prolonged period tends to give one a very negative view of men in general and athletes in particular. In addition, the author underestimates the strength of women, and discounts the possibility that being viewed as a sex object can be both stimulating and empowering to them. Her depiction of cheerleaders and topless dancers, among other things, were very shallow. The whole book is very one-dimensional, and seems to be written by the kind of rabid feminist that gives feminism a bad name. Not everyone out there believes that all men conspire to bring women down and subjugate them.
A Must Read for Feminist Sports Enthusiasts.......2000-10-02
I discovered this book only recently and it is a remarkable work. Nelson eloquently describes many of the obstracles of sexism that remain in women's sports today. While much progress has been made, many inequities remain as she clearly reports. While this book was initially published in 1994, it is still very relevant. The disparities in the money made by elite female athletes when compared to elite male athletes remain vast and disturbing. All feminists who also love sports will love this book.
Well written, entertaining -- and scary.......1999-01-21
I'm a woman who has been puzzled and bemused for a long time by the male fixation on sports. How can a man remember the batting averages of all the players in last year's World Series, but not know the shoe size of the woman he's been married to for 10 years? Why does a man buy a newspaper, read every word of the sports section, and throw away the rest without even glancing at it? Why is a professional basketball player paid a salary that rivals (and often exceeds) that of the CEO of a major corporation, who is responsible for managing a trillion-dollar budget and thousands of employees? And why, when a local writer received a major national award, was she relegated to a few column-inches in the Local section of the paper, while the firing of a high school football coach made the front-page headlines?
Nelson's book confirmed what I'd long suspected: as women have gradually broken through one glass ceiling after another, men have retreated into sports as the last bastion of traditional masculinity. It's a world in which "girl" is used as an insult, where men are permitted to express their affection only by punching each other, and where the only females allowed on the premises are decorative servants. But for those who claim that this is harmless male bonding and dismiss its critics as man-haters, Nelson shows the darker side: high school athletes who rape with impunity, glorification of mindless violence, and perpetuation of a concept of "masculinity" defined by behavior that would make a Neanderthal blush.
While it's possible to pick holes in some of her arguments (I know female sports fans who are as ardently partisan as any man), I think Nelson's analysis is generally well done and convincing. My only criticism is that I would have appreciated more suggestions on "Where do we go from here?" But I think awareness of the problem is more than half the battle, and she's certainly done an excellent job of that! Every parent in America should read this book.

A Fantastic and Inspiring Book.......2005-04-13
A Fantastic and Inspiring Book. Elston Howard was a great man who had guts and charisma. This is a must read for ALL baseball fans and even non baseball fans! Enjoy!
AN EXCELLENT READ.......2002-10-20
MRS HOWARD AND MR WIMBISH DO A SUPERB JOB IN TELLING THE LIFE AND CAREER OF FORMER YANKEE GREAT ELSTON HOWARD. ELSTON DESERVED A MUCH LONGER LIFE. THIS IS WRITTEN WITH MUCH HONESTY AND SENSITIVTY. . FROM THE JIM CROWE LAWS TO ARROGANCE AND PREJUDICE, ELSTON HOWARD FACED MANY BARRIERS ALONG THE WAY TO STARDOM. HE WAS QUITE A PLAYER AND DESERVED MUCH MORE RECOGNITION. THIS BOOK BEAUTIFULLY DESCRIBES THE TRADGEDY, TURMOIL, AND TRIUMPHS THAT CAME TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY. A MUST READ FOR ALL YANKEE FANS AND HISTORIANS OF BASBALL. A GREAT READ.
A book for all sports fans and then some.......2002-02-17
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It's not just a well written story, but it seems to give true insight to life inside the Yankees during one the franchise's most notable eras. Mickey, Yogi, Elston and company made history together. Arlene stood tall in her role as the first black Yankee wife and Elston prevailed with honor and sportsmanship during these difficult transitional years. Mrs. Howard and Mr. Wimbish's collaboration deserves kudos and more readers. Even long suffering Red Sox fans (just like me!) won't be disappointed.
Baseball History at its Best!.......2002-01-16
The story of Elston Howard's climb through the baseball ranks during the height of the Jim Crowe laws is not to be missed by anyone who likes baseball or history. His widow Arlene sees his great rise and tragic end to a debilitating disease with the eyes of an old-fashioned story-teller: passionate and dispassionate, an actor on the stage and an observer from the audience. A must read for baseball fans, black history buffs, and those who want to know what it was like to live inside a separate America during one of its greatest and worst eras.
A True Piece of American History.......2002-01-11
For those of us who grew up in the 50's with the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants all in New York, it is a great story evocative of those days told from with a fine eye and keen perspective. A must read for young and old alike - a story that should never be forgotten. Elston Howard's widow is direct and unsparing in this straight forward narrative of their life together with Baseball.

This book provides a fascinating and comprehensive glimpse into the daily lives of pre-contact California Indians. It is laid out in easy to use chapters that provide just enough information to be complete, but still include local examples and myths to add flavor to the narrative. My only complaint is that some of the skills are a bit complicated and are confusing to read. I guess you just have to go out to the wilderness and try it out! This is a must-read for anyone interested in California Indians and their history.

Great History of Baseball in the Heartland.......2002-05-15
Dr. Roger Launius, who is the chief historian of NASA, has moved from space into examining the history of professional baseball in the state of Missouri. A great read. Launius tells all the stories concerning the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns, KC Royals, Monarchs, and KC A's and others. He blends compelling stories and anecdotes about each team's history(both Major League and Negro league) and their places in the overall history of baseball. Maybe the best concise history of baseball in a state ever written. A must for every baseball fan. I especially enjoyed the section on the Kansas City Athletics and their owner Charlie O. Finley. Book Description
A study of the evolution of American women's clothing, "When the Girls Came Out to Play" traces the history of modern sportswear as a universal style that broke down traditional gender roles. Patricia Warner shows how this profound cultural shift, which did not reach fruition until World War II, originated during the previous century with the gradual expansion of socially acceptable physical activity for women. Behind this development was a growing interest in sports and exercise that was further nurtured by the establishment of schools of higher education for women.
The participation of women in athletic pursuits previously reserved for men began with the relatively genteel sports of croquet and tennis. With the founding of women's colleges, these "ladylike" games were supplemented by more vigorous activities and competitive team sports, from gymnastics to swimming to basketball. At first, Warner points out, women literally had nothing to wear for these activities. Whereas such fashionable attire as corsets, petticoats, hats, and gloves could be worn while playing outdoor lawn games, more strenuous athletic endeavors required less physically restrictive clothing. Even so, change came only gradually, as women's colleges, shielded from public scrutiny and prying male eyes, permitted the adoption of looser, more comfortable apparel for physical education. Many of these new outfits featured trousers, garments considered taboo for women, though they often remained hidden beneath voluminous skirts.
Over time, however, the practicality and versatility of such clothing led to social acceptance, laying the foundation for the emergence of the now ubiquitous yet distinctly American style known as sportswear. Although we take it for granted, Warner observes, this is the first time in the history of the world that such universality has existed in clothing, and it has lasted now for well over half a centuryin itself a marvel, considering the speed of fashion change in an era of instant messages and images.

An excellent survey prompts readers to understand the connected basics of social and leisure movements and ideology........2006-12-12
College-level collections strong in both sports history, the arts and women's studies will equally find When The Girls Came Out to Play: The Birth of American Sportswear an important study, linking the evolution of women's clothing trends with the rise of women's involvement in recreational sports. The changes in sportswear brought with it and reflected a breakdown in traditional gender roles: Patricia Warner surveys the history of women's sports clothing from the early 19th to the mid-20th century and provides excellent analysis of women's participation in a male-dominated world. An excellent survey prompts readers to understand the connected basics of social and leisure movements and ideology.

A.O.I.A. Online Social Club...
Anyone that would like to join my online web ring "A.O.I.A." can e-mail me. We circulate e-mails on all issues past, present, and future with regards to the Italian American community. A.O.I.A. stands for "American Of Italian Ancestry." We are all Americans, but keeping the cultural branch of our family tree is very important to me. As an American Of Italian Ancestry, I am constantly trying to incorporate something Italian into my daily life. Whether it's food, music, movies, sports, clothes, cars, you name it. If it's a person, place, or thing that has roots from the boot, I am interested in learning about it and discussing it. That's what makes you the ultimate Italian American in this melting pot of America. You don't have to be first generation Italian or speak the language fluently to be an Italian American. If you look and feel and act Italian American, you are one in my eyes. Don't be a dry as toast meddigan (an American who denies anything ethnic). Instead of an apple pie, go for a ricott' cheesecake. Instead of a meatloaf, have a meatball.

Book Description
"Spindel's work is a marvelous voyage that prepares the reader for further adventures that are clearly not designed to reveal but to suggest. . . . In explaining white America to Itself, the book is an unqualified success."
American Indian Quarterly
"An unusual and unfailingly interesting examination of a clash of cultures."
Sports Illustrated
"Readers of this very important, highly readable book will have a new understanding of the insidiousness of racism and the ease with which mass marketing can create new mythology. Highly recommended."
Library Journal
"A thorough treatise on a controversial topic."
Booklist
"Spindel writes convincingly about how her research has helped her to understand attitudes toward American Indians. . . . Many fans of professional sports would benefit by reading this book."
Publishers Weekly
"Although a great deal has been written about the controversy of using fake Indians to get fans pumped up at football games, it took an entire book to give full vent to the subject. Carol Spindel does this admirably and evenhandedly."
Chicago Tribune
"An important resource in the ongoing controversy over Indian mascots across America."
Religious Studies Review
"Spindel displays considerable courage in tackling a controversial subject. A very personal account of the twentieth-century phenomenon of American Indians used as sports mascots, Dancing at Halftime also contains some fascinating history of early college football. The whole is strongly and beautifully written."
--Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
"With clear and compelling language, Spindel shows us how the naive rituals of a previous era can become the insensitive orthodoxy of today. I can't imagine a more readable-or a more even-handed-exploration of the mascot issue. This should be required reading for anyone committed to building a new sense of community in the United States."
--Frederick E. Hoxie, Swanlund Professor, University of Illinois, and editor of The Encyclopedia of North American Indians
"Honest, insightful, and a well balanced analysis of this complicated problem. Spindel has discovered the confusing reservoir of tangled emotions that underlie American attitudes towards Indians-and toward themselves. A 'must read'."
--Vine Deloria, Jr., Professor of History Emeritus, University of Colorado and a Standing Rock Sioux tribal member
"Yesterday's racism we recognize and we are embarrassed by it. Today's racism we often do not recognize until we read something like Carol Spindel's clear and fascinating message in Dancing at Halftime."
--Senator Paul Simon
"I celebrate Dancing at Halftime, which brings Carol Spindel's wry and penetrating perception to this subject. As she well understands, it is a cipher through which one can read the deeper meanings not only of American history but of contemporary life today."
--Susan Griffin, author of A Chorus of Stones
Sports fans love to don paint and feathers to cheer on the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves, the Florida State Seminoles, and the Warriors and Chiefs of their hometown high schools. But outside the stadiums, American Indians aren't cheering--they're yelling racism.
School boards and colleges are bombarded with emotional demands from both sides, while professional teams find themselves in court defending the right to trademark their Indian names and logos. In the face of opposition by a national anti-mascot movement, why are fans so determined to retain the fictional chiefs who plant flaming spears and dance on the fifty-yard line?
To answer this question,
Dancing at Halftime takes the reader on a journey through the American imagination where our thinking about American Indians has been, and is still being, shaped.
Dancing at Halftime is the story of Carol Spindel's determination to understand why her adopted town is so passionately attached to Chief Illiniwek, the American Indian mascot of the University of Illinois. She rummages through our national attic, holding dusty souvenirs from world's fairs and wild west shows, Edward Curtis photographs, Boy Scout handbooks, and faded football programs up to the light. Outside stadiums, while American Indian Movement protestors burn effigies, she listens to both activists and the fans who resent their attacks. Inside hearing rooms and high schools, she poses questions to linguists, lawyers, and university alumni.
A work of both persuasion and compassion,
Dancing at Halftime reminds us that in America, where Pontiac is a car and Tecumseh a summer camp, Indians are often our symbolic servants, functioning as mascots and metaphors that express our longings to become "native" Americans, and to feel at home in our own land.

Subtle,Profound--Extremely well-written.......2003-01-01
I'm an alumna of the University of Illinois, and was never very comfortable with the concept of "Chief Illiniwek." But I had no idea the role that Indian sports mascots have had in obscuring and distorting both the history and current status of Native peoples. Spindel's book examines the unique nexus of the history of Native peoples, football, the Big Ten, land grant universities, anthropology, wild west shows and photography, among others. In a careful and quiet way, she weaves these areas together to explore why these "mascots" are so demeaning to us all.
Uncovering the truth behind the myth.......2000-12-16
During my high school unit on Native American history and culture last fall, I used the Illiniwek issue to show my students the subtleties of racism. I wish at the time I had Spindel's book to drive her best point home: that white America needs its Native American symbols to justify our presence here on this continent and to forget a significant part of our shameful history. We also refuse to acknowledge the issues present day Native Americans face because then we would have to face up to the crimes of our founders. That it why supporters of Chief Illiniwek refuse to listen to the very people they claim to honor.
Racist Indian Mascots Exposed.......2000-10-16
An excellent analysis of the Indian mascot controversy in general and cheif illiniwek in particular. Very well researched and presented in an interesting and compelling manner.
The real story of chief illiniwek.......2000-09-30
This topic is extremely controvesial and Carol Swindel handles the topic very well. She takes time to present both sides of the issue including a history of both the Illini Indians and chief illiniwek. It's difficult to read this book and not be affected by both sides of the issue. I applaud Swindel for having the courage to write a comprehensive study of the use of racist mascots in America. A must read if you are a Big Ten or Illini fan.
The truth about the chief.......2000-09-30
For fans and foes of the cheif illiniwek controversy, this book is a must. Spindel takes the time to research the history of the Illini Indians, their culture and their demise. She has also researched the history of the University's symbol and presents and unbiased documentary of the origins. It's diffcult to read this book and not change your opinion on the issues. Well worth the time and money invested in reading this work.
