This book is worth it just for the gallery - book after book from top creative bookbinders. Dan Essigs books inparticular are especially inspiring, but the entire book is full of great artists, and the step by steps are a great peek into how they create. Any creative bookbinder would be happy to have this in their library!
Not So Much........2004-12-06
Penland is excellent. Its instructors and classes excellent. But while this book covers a wide range of material from skilled, respected bookbinders, THIS BOOK IS NOT EXCELLENT.
The essays and instructions have been cruelly edited, dumbed-down and glossed-up. For chrissake, THEY AIRBRUSHED JIM CROFT'S HANDS. If you live out in the boonies as he does, working with your hands, living off them, day and night, your hands do not come to the camera with a manicure. And they airbrushed Julie Leonard's lovely gap-toothed smile! Etc. These are artists of well-repute, and they deserve much better from a publishing house.
The good this book does is heighten awareness of the advanced glories of the book arts today -- but that is grossly undercut by the fact that, through the editing, the awareness is inherently flawed. This is a book for the coffee table, not the student, or the binder. It could perhaps be useful as an illustrated bibliography -- people, places, and techniques to seek out. But why buy for that reason, when you could rent it from the library?
A book of beauty and substance.......2004-11-21
This book is more than just a collection of the work of a number of outstanding bookmakers amd bookbinders. It is also an explication of the approach of each artisan to his/her art, and a step-by-step illustration of one of each person's projects. The photographs are also outstanding.
Each chapter is excellent, but my own favorite is the chapter by Barbara Mauriello on Box Construction. It combines a charming and thoughtful essay with striking illustrations of the wide range of her work.
First impression a lasting one.......2004-10-26
I was fortunate enough to see a copy of this book prior to distribution and was extremely impressed. As I type this I am looking a wide shelf of "books on books" and must admit that less than half of them really were worth the price of admission. Granted, I gain a little something from each of them, but only a few of them truly provide that something extra or uniqueness that brings me back again and again as either a reference or for inspiration.
I believe that this one will be one I go to for both. It is that good.
As the publisher's description indicates, Penland has pulled out all the stops and have tapped their talent pool of true MASTERS of the book arts for this book. The contributors are like a Who's Who in the book arts field. The illustrations and photos are well done, clear instructions and wondrous books to gawk at for inspiration.
If you are a veteran book artist, you will appreciate the book for its depth and may even be a bit challenged by it. If you are a novice, you will be given the rare opportunity to learn from the best in the country and be moved to bring your work to new levels.
It should be noted that this book is NOT all a guide on how to make several different types of books or bindings. It does provide insight and guidance on how to make certain aspects of books, including a small, wooden "shrine" to hold a tiny coptic stitch book. If you know Dan Essig's work, you'll immediately recognize his contribution. Dan shows you how he makes at least one of this book forms. Eileen Wallace's contribution displays her common sense but very precise approach to book binding. If I were to summarize the book in a few words, it would be, "Talented book artists show you how they do what they do."
If you are looking for a book of JUST binding methods, don't buy this book. If however, you are looking for an insight into creative processes as performed by masters of the craft, all bound into an inspiration-filled tome - buy it.
I do highly recommend this book...it deserves to be in your art/fine craft library.

This is an excellent book for teaching yourself piano. All the reviewers who slam this book for corny humor can go jump in a lake. There are plenty of serious music books that just shovel out the facts in a dry manner, so if that is what you want, fine, no reason to get uptight about a book that trys to use a more human touch. I want to also make it clear that the book does not tell jokes per say, so you dont have to read through long groaners to get to the material. The author simply interjects personal examples. Its a technique that is used in all the dummies books, if you dont like it, dont read dummies books.

Perfect just for beginners .......2007-05-14
This book is perfect if you want to play piano and you don't know anything about it. The book is plenty of jokes and all kind of information but nothing complex that you can't take it. This book is worthy of its title :-P I bought this one because I bought first "The piano handbook" and this one is not so good for beginners, but perfect for intermediate and advance that missed something or what to learn a different scale or style.
Excellent despite the stale jokes.......2007-04-20
I wanted to brush up on piano playing as I haven't been near a piano for about 40 years, and for this purpose I found the book excellent, though I haven't read similar introductory books so can't compare. Other reviewers have complained about the stale jokes, but for me this was a minor irritation. Music theory can be tedious, and the typically light "Dummies" touch counteracts what could otherwise have been a ponderous read. Even bad jokes are preferable to learned tomes that take themselves oh-so-seriously.
The book contains a wealth of basic and reference information, and the various issues are explained clearly, assuming no prior music knowledge. Unlike many introductory books the chapters do not necessarily have to be read in sequence (though doing so would probably provide a better basis) - the book is well structured, with lots of references to other chapters should you need clarification of terms explained elsewhere.
Using a DIY book effectively instead of piano lessons obviously requires some effort from the reader's side, though the accompanying CD does help. I also liked the attention given to the various styles, from classical to rock, blues, pop, jazz, country and soul.
One of the first hurdles is learning to read notes, after which things become much easier. If you want to start playing real songs and tunes as soon as possible, you'll find a few in this book, including the beautiful "Aura Lee" (made famous by Elvis Presley as "Love me Tender") which is surprisingly easy to play.
On the downside, many of the other tunes serving to illustrate a point are, to my mind, not very exciting, but then having musical notation of the more modern hits would probably have increased the selling price due to royalties considerations. So, for instance, we get the traditional and rather tame version of "The House of the Rising Sun" instead of the haunting hit arrangement by The Animals, who made it famous in popular culture.
When I was a kid I had a year's piano lessons, but it just didn't work for me. Reading this book has helped me looking at music and the piano / keyboard in a new way, and I have since bought a few "Easy Piano" songbooks and enjoy mastering new tunes.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This is an easily accessible book. It is written in a way that educates without being too academic. Along with scientific explanations of brain functions integrated with the effects of music are practical applications of various exercises. This book is a helpful addition to my professional library of early childhood education.
A Must-Read for Fine Arts Educators!.......2001-08-26
Jenson has updated much information in this quickly-read book. Anyone unfamiliar with his works will find this helpful; veterans of the topic will find new, useful "ammunition." Especially refreshing is the unbiased approach to the Mozart effect studies; a convincing view to show administrators because of its balanced presentation.
Making a case for music.......2001-04-02
Jensen continues to survey and summarise research studies on the impact of music and applies his gift in making them accessible to educators. He points out the common fallacy of considering music as a "right-brained" activity. Music affects many different parts of the brain. Only timbre activated the right hemisphere. Music enhances cognition, emotional intelligence, boosts peformance, heightens motivation. Reading, perception, motor skills, hearing, behavior and muscle strength are all influenced by music. Music also affects the immune system, stress, relaxation, blood flow and memory systems. You get wider coverage than Ch. 17 of the author's "Brained-based Learning". You get many different recommendations for choosing appropriate musical pieces. Overall, this is a valuable challenge and resource for educators. One regret is that, compared to the cheaper and most informative "Owner's Manual for the Brain" (P. J. Howard, 831pp.), I'm puzzled why this slim book should be so costly.

Music with the Brain in Mind is a short book full of great information. Each idea is well documented with research. Many ideas are given for use of music and brain research at school, in the studio, and at home. This book makes me want to read more by Eric Jensen.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches singing- especially those who work with groups of inexperienced singers. Phillips goes a long way in demystifying singing technique and causes for singing problems as well as providing ideas for remediation in older inexperienced singers. The fact that Phillips approaches singing in a very objective manner makes singing an attainable skill for anyone who is willing to put in the physical work. The exercises in this book are intended for group use and when used consistently they really work! Many people ask me how I get my 4th and 5th grade boys to sing so willingly and I really think a lot of it has to do with the information that I have taken to my music classroom from this book. Some of the exercises may sound a little silly at first, but give it a try!
Overall approach to effective vocal production in youth........1998-05-26
This book explores the history behind American vocal training, describing how different attitudes towards school singing has affected the choral sound as we know it today. The author also effectively presents how singing is a psychomotor process, and one that is not always easily taught or learned. He reviews the vocal parameters of younger and developing voices, and explains the difficulty with the adolescent voice change (especially with boys). He also encourages teachers to express singing as a "sport", one that requires physical involvement of the body! The second half of the book is dedicated to 90 specific exercise methods for teachers to use in developing their choir. He has broken it into three age levels so that teachers anywhere within the grades 1-12 spectrum can use it effectively, or just use it to supplement a program they may already use and like. The exercises develop repiration, phonation, resonance, diction, and expression within choirs. Eighteen wonderful vocal exercises are explained for each of these areas. This would make an excellent reference book for any music teacher who is involved with teaching singing to any age level. The exercises are specific and help coordinate the students' overall approach to singing.

i don't get it... all these glowing reviews and i just can't get through this book for anything! i think the cover states that anyone can read through this book in an evening... something like that. well, maybe i have adult adhd because i couldn't stay interested. it served me best as a prelude to sleep.

I already had a very simple understanding of music theory, so some of this stuff I skimmed over, but within the first few pages I learned things that immediately opened my eyes and my mouth in amazement. I found myself several times saying aloud, "So that's what that means!" I was ready to give up on singing in my church choir, but now I feel much more confident and am ready to resume with more vigor.

This product helped me to identify and read musical notes in the simplest form. I have learned to identify a whole note from a half and quarter notes,etc.This product is good to have if your serious in your quest to learn how to read musical notations.

This is an interesting, complex, detailed, authoritative, little book that promises 1. In two hours you can read it through and understand the principles involved in reading music and 2. In an evening you can learn to read practically any melody and pick it out on the piano. Amazingly, 1. and 2. worked for me. What worked for me might also work for you. Why not give it a try? Howard Shanet, the author, is more than qualified to teach music as he was a professor of music at Columbia and the conductor of that university's orchestra. But more than music, he knows the ropes through years of experience teaching this subject and actually makes learning easy and fun. In part I, he deals with the all-important and often neglected topic of rhythm and in part II, the important elements of pitch. It all boils down to when to play and what to play. Right? In parts III, IV, & V he puts rhythm and pitch together and introduces the elements of tonality. Along the way, we get brief asides on music history that help fix our memory. Since he explained the bass clef, I shall never forget where it came from and why in shows where F is on the written sheet. Can you guess why ¾ time was considered the perfect time in the middle ages? Something to do with the trinity? You bet. For better results, you should do as I did: work the problems and exercises with a piano so that you can see, feel, and hear what the text is talking about. Actually touching the keys makes all the difference and works lots better than the author's suggested tapping and singing. Despite some key signatures that are blurred and poorly printed, and two mistakes in the answer key on page 169, and the failure to give out the quick and dirty secret for reading any key signature (explained in Piano for Dummies)+, this little gem of a book is highly recommended for novices who need to learn the basics and previously experienced people who need to refresh their memories after a long absence from the keyboard. Also suggested: Paul Hindemith's Elementary Training for Musicians and Blake Neely's Piano for Dummies.

This book was a well thought out approach for learning to read music for the absolute novice. I used the approach with great succcess in teaching my church choir to read music quickly. I highly recommend it!

The book is 90% about writing songs with guitar chords. Sections on lyric writing didn't impress me. The very short chapter on making a demo recording was excellent and almost a great (though very very short) book on its own.
Best real-world, practical explanation of chords and chord progressions I've ever read. (in the rock and pop genre.) Really breaks down song and musical structures of popular songs. Another great point is inclusion of recent as well as 60s and 70s rock songs. For example, one page analyzes a Fat Boy Slim song.
My knowledge and understanding increased greatly from this book.
There are so many great example progressions that you can open the book at random, play around with something on the page and come up with something.
This book does not go into the "front end" of the psychology or craft of creativity.
One of the best books on creating music I've ever read.
Also check out "The War of Art" for a brilliant and inspiring book about creating.

I have been playing guitar, and writing songs for 15 years. I learned a good bit from this book that I wish I would have known when I first started 15 years ago. You probably think you know how to write a song, but unless you have been trained in music theory, you probably have just been doing things that sound good without understanding why. This book does not go into extreme detail on any one subject in songwriting, its sort of like an really good overview on information such as melody, lyrics, chords, progressions, song types, etc.. It shows you all the pieces you need and more importantly WHY they sound the way they do or go together. It is for the person with beginner-intermediate music theory skill, or for any skill level guitar player. Information is well organized, easy to understand, and backed with examples from popular songs. Not songs like "Greensleeves" and "mary had a little lamb", but beatles, nirvana, oasis, madonna,etc.. Check out this guy's other books- I was very interested in the chord progression section and got his book on that subject. I think it is even better than this one.
Great Book on Songwriting.......2006-11-02
This is a must have for any guitar player trying to write songs, especially the singer / songwriter type. This book is filled with ideas for songs and how to incorporate the guitar into your songwriting. What I like most about this book was the numerous chord progressions listed and what mood each progression can create. It gives examples of songs that use the progressions and what genre of music they fit best. I loved this book and use it regularly. If you are looking to write music and lyrics this is a must.
Stunningly bad.......2006-10-06
To be honest, I've owned this book forever but after seeing someone ask about it on another forum, I just wanted to log in here and write a quick review of it as a warning to potential customers because I found it so poorly executed. This book basically consists of Rooksby very quickly presenting a topic in overly simple terms and then citing hundreds of examples of existing known songs that are supposed to illustrate his idea. This sounds like a great idea in principle but in execution it all falls apart. The examples read like pure fluff and do not cover any detail whatsoever, he does not even go into high level things like chord progressions, etc, from the examples. I presume this is due to copyright restrictions, etc. It would have made much more sense to license a few decent examples and really show how they illustrate the point. Or heck, the book is about song writing, why not actually WRITE a few over the course of the book??
The CD that came with the book is literally content-free, too. There's almost nothing on it. Again, this is in spite of all of the external music cited (some of it obscure) and due to the lack of specifics in the book. The CD can literally be thrown away without harming use of the book. It appears to be included in the book as reassurance that there is something there... i.e. a marketing move more than a useful resource for the customer.
So, really, in spite of the hundreds of general examples cited in the book, there is not a single specific detailed piece of information I can remember off hand. Ie. almost no tab, chord diagrams, or sheet music style content. Almost nothing specific about the guitar's interaction with the rhythm section and the specifics of writing for the rhythm section or vocal melody are covered either. And of course, the tell-tale item: nothing is composed/written by Rooksby for the book.
Looking at the presentation, its very slick. The book looks nice, the layout is great, the writing style is enthusiastic, its easy to WANT to like it but when it comes down to it it's good looking book that doesn't achieve its objective. I regretted the time I spent reading this book hoping for it to get better... Thankfully it's extremely short too, but I won't even bother going there at this point. ;)
So, basically, this book is just flat out not useful and the time spent looking for a different, more suitable, book on the topic will be rewarded many times over.
Also, avoid Rooksby's "Riffs" book as well, it suffers nearly the exact same set of problems as this one.

It's not a guitar method neither a complete songwriting book. Perhaps it's both, but I find it quite boring and not focusing.
