Customer Reviews:
The future is now.......2007-03-20
For the most part, whenever authors write about new media and the Internet, the book is dated by the time the ink dries. For the most part "The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution" is still ahead of the curve. David Kusek and Gerd Leonhard take chances. Most futurists do. Some of their visions are hitting the bull's eye now in March, 2005 although the book was published two years ago. That's pretty good aim. It reads well too.
Alright already!.......2007-02-28
This is a case of a lot of filler to make what could be communicated in a short essay into a book. The basic message "The music industry has to embrace digital technology." This and a few other salient points are made early in the book and then repeated with different wording ad nauseum. I would suggest standing in the store, reading the introductory stuff and skimming the rest. Too many authors are doing this these days. It should have been a magazine article.
Not factual enough........2007-02-12
This book is a terrible book in my opinion and anyone who thinks that it is good needs to question their intelligence. It is not based enough on facts and is full of personal perceptions, opinions, and myths of the author himself. Not recommended to anyone who is a music maker or true consumer. Quality music is expensive to create and very time consuming. That is a fact that Mr. Kusek fails to point out.
Stirs ideas, but repetitive and overreaching.......2007-01-19
I bought this book because I am getting into the digital music business. I enjoyed reading it, but I didn't much care for the wording in the book, and I think the authors are overreaching in the sense that they are expecting too much from artists in the industry.
This book clarifies the differences between the record and music industry, and emphasizes the effect of file sharing on digital medias (Limewire, Bearshare, programs) and the record industry. It makes some significant points, and makes the same points again later on in the book. The author states that artists should be able to sustain careers rather easily without "getting signed" and that is not the case today. Artists still need capital for marketing on the internet, and in marketing it is possible, but still costly.
This book is worth reading if you are getting into the business. I don't regret buying it, but I think other books may have a more definite impact on the reader. What it boils down to is opinion, and mine vary slightly in some cases and greatly in others.
Helpful and Inspiring.......2006-11-11
I haven't finished reading this book yet, but so far it's been inspiring. The writers create very feasible scenarios for where the music industry is headed in the next few years. In fact, the book is about 2 years old now and some of the predictions are already coming true. For example; mobile devices like phones and PDAs converging and becoming delivery services for music, social networking services like Myspace (not mentioned in the book, presumably because it had not yet become popular) coming to the foreground as a way to listen to and exchange music, the idea of music as a utility or a subscription which has recently become a more popular option with various download services. I'm looking forward to finishing this book and taking my new-found inspiration online.
Book Description
This acidly funny account of the battle over an offshore wind farm is both a fascinating window on the business and politics of energy and a scathing portrait of the ruling class.
When Jim Gordon set out to build a wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod, he knew some people might object. But there was a lot of merit in creating a privately funded, clean energy source for energy-starved New England, and he felt sure most people would recognize it eventually. Instead, all Hell broke loose. Gordon had unwittingly challenged the privileges of some of America's richest and most politically connected people, and they would fight him tooth and nail, no matter what it cost, and even when it made no sense.
Cape Wind is a rollicking tale of democracy in action and plutocracy in the raw as played out among colorful and glamorous characters on one of our country's most historic and renowned pieces of coastline. As steeped in American history and local color as The Prince of Providence; as biting, revealing and fun as Philistines at the Hedgerow, it is also a cautionary tale about how money can hijack democracy while America lags behind the rest of the developed world in adopting clean energy.

Outrageous Hypocrisy Revealed.......2007-09-07
Well researched and written. This book should be read by everyone who is really concerned about the reduction in use of fossil fuels. The outrageous hypocrisy of politicians of both parties as well as some of the beautiful people who claim to support the development of alternative energy sources is laid out for all to see.
A must read for any energy entrepreneur.......2007-09-03
It would be shame for an energy entrepreneur to be tripped up by the obfuscation described in this great book without its warning. Extensively researched, masterfully written, a lesson of the times. Read it and learn! Bet you won't be able to put it down,
Cutting edge history in the making.......2007-08-21
Cape Wind is a brilliant account of a project that has the potential to revolutionize the energy future of the US. It couldn't be more timely, given the current energy crisis, the need for serious and concrete solutions and the fact that the controversy over the project is happening at this very moment.
The authors provide a powerful experience - the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the politics and history of this project as it unfolds every day. The presentation of the facts and players is fascinating; their delivery of the story is incredibly entertaining.
Read it now and stay tuned to the project - History is being made!
Amazing... We need a documentary on this!!!.......2007-08-21
There's too much happening here to not have a well executed and informative documentary on this. It may seem like a small issue to those outside of it, but it's implications reach much further than the Cape.
Read this easy to follow and well written account of this project and engage yourself into todays questions about our planet and our political stratosphere.
Tad over the top- but very valuable for students & voters.......2007-08-20
We used the Cape Wind story in public policy class this winter (b4 this book came out), & students were fascinated. This book does illuminate the major actors, and provides in depth background for why a policy with this many public benefits has been stalled for years. Romney, the Kennedys, Alaskan politicians, and the Cape Cod Times (although they are good about my letters when I go home)should be ashamed of themselves.

The Funk Drummer's Bible.......2004-11-27
This book is the reason why my funk drumming is where it's at today. It's a very difficult book to master, but the beauty of this book is, it's a complete step-by-step process. What you do is practice all the exercises with a metronome between 60-80 beats per minutes. Once you feel comfortable with the current excercise, you pick up the tempo just a little bit, then you move on to the next exercise. Before you know it, you're playing the techniques with more intent and conviction and it becomes a natural part of your playing. This approach to drumming is completely unorthodox to what you're probably used to. But once you've done this for a while, it becomes second nature and it becomes part of your drumming vocabulary. Get this book, work through it, and become the funk drummer that your drumming potential will allow you to become. You will not regret it!
Probably the best book for funk drummers and beyond.......1999-08-16
If you really wanna funk and improve your coordination of all your limbs on the drumset this is THE BOOK to get to it. It's a killer. Every page is a challange and you really feel how you are growing with every page. And the best thing is, it's fun to play all this stuff that David wrote and it's useable in your everyday drumming. Everything is special and has a magic touch. There is nothing to compare to it on the book market to my knowledge. If you want to make some giant steps forward it's a must!!

Clean out and Beware of Bogus reviewing..........2007-09-10
Why Can't Amazon start cleaning out all the obviously bogus reviews written by the writers hired-reviewers and friends. Read the only other 2 reviews below that DONT have 5-stars. A good one below from December 31, 2005 is titled: "Another Music Lawyer, Another Book to Milk the Hopeful Masses, December 31, 2005
By Anna Lee".
good could be better!.......2006-05-27
this book can have alot of atachments to it to make it the book you think it is but i usggest getting a totally differant book. such as the ty cohen series and his book "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!"
Lots of information.......2006-05-19
The digital revolution is here and the music industry is one of the oldest to have adopted this new way of communicating, always refining it's technique music producing and promoting has become one of the biggest buzz on the internet, attracting many people and giving more chances to "small" people. A good well written book with sufficient information but if you want more presented in an even more interesting way than you should check out "The New Music Industry: How to Use the Power of the Internet to Multiply Your Industry Exposure, Fan Base and Income Potential Online!" By Ty Cohen a book that will open up the potential for online business in the music industry.
A very informational, well-written book.......2006-05-15
This is an excellent book, which clarifies many complicated issues that you might have had just a basic understanding of before. Almost everything about digital music is made clear, and you will have a better idea of where the music industry is headed after you read this book. However if you're looking for a more entrepreneurial approach to internet music, I suggest reading "The New Music Industry: How to Use the Power of the Internet to Multiply Your Industry Exposure, Fan Base and Income Potential Online!" by Ty Cohen. You will find it more suited to your tastes if you're looking to become famous by way of the internet.
The book to Get.......2006-04-21
I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the future of music and how you can intergrate some of this information into your current business or research.it was a great buy along with a manual I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.

Customer Reviews:
Publicity Stunt.......2007-08-18
Three or 4 interesting things, but written for Grandpa Simpson. Utterly disappointing for financial types. Mostly it is a publicity stunt for his Hedge Fund.
An Excellent Read - informative and entertaining.......2007-07-19
With the Bear Stearns hedge funds going from 20 billion to zero in a matter of months this is a great book to understand what the hedge fund world is all about. What the book lacks in structure it makes up for in substance and I found it an enlightening read. Part memoir, part investment smarts, it really is a good buy if you enjoy popular finance books. It possibly also may be dissected by historians in decades to come as an insight into the excesses and hubris of early 21st century capitalism if many more triple 'AAA' rated CDOs suddenly becomes worthless and the whole financial system starts falling apart.
You also get a sense from the writing of wall street's disconnect from the 'real' world of business that actually makes things and employs the rest of us. The likes of Buffett and Peter Lynch seem to have a relationship with what companies do. Mr Biggs seems to be in a much more abstract, rarified world where the worshipped idol is the Market wihout a thought for what it represents. Financial voyeurism at it's extreme.
For the ordinary wage earner (of which I am one) it would also be interesting to know what motivates someone like Mr. Biggs who has always been wealthy (and presumably has continued to get wealthier) to want to make more and not instead devote themselves to something else. In other words, what's the point? But maybe wealth is the point.
There's a gentle a swipe at George Soros for creating his foundation so he can leave a better legacy but whatever the motives, many would applaud the spirit of someone who says 'I have enough, I'll do something useful'.
Whatever my criticism, I'll buy his next book - and make him wealthier.
A Look Behind the Hedge.......2007-06-06
Hedgehogging is a collection of anecdotes from the famous international investor, Barton Biggs. Through a series of short stories about other traders and money managers, he depicts many different styles and philosophies for investing. As he tells each story, he gives his opinions on just about every major topic in today's capital markets.
Though covering a hodgepodge of ideas, many of the anecdotes are about the pressure to perform and how it affects the psyche and personal lives of the money manager. Some of the stories are about speculative bets turned bad, such as one of Barton's own oil valuations gone awry. Every story has a different moral - maybe the trader unfairly got short squeezed, or a firm lost sight of the big picture when staring at a quantitative model.
Reading Hedgehogging puts you in the shoes of a Wall Street money manager. The stories tend to revolve around lifestyle and not investment strategy. It's easy to read, entertaining, but does not get too technical. I recommend it if you enjoy the field, but consider it more of an entertaining than informative read.
Boring and Uninsightful.......2007-05-20
I was hoping that this book would be the Liar's Poker of the Hedge Fund world. Instead, it was a big disappointment. Here's why:
1) By and large, the book was a random hodgepodge of anecdotes thrown together. It wasn't one cohesive story. Each chapter was it's own mini-story, or series of dinner conversations. It wasn't a page-turner in the least.
2) I didn't find it all that insightful. Through much of it, I'm thinking, "Gee, I could have made up a story like that"
3)I found the tidbits of advice to be trite and annoying. All of them seemed to come from the "Hindsight is 20-20" point of view. At times, the message was contradictory, pointing out the foibles of people who held on to losers too long, while later extolling the virtues of people who stuck to their guns on unpopular stocks and hit the jackpot. If anything, reading his words made me believe that much more in the virtues of Random Walk Theorists, and weak Efficient Market Theories.
4) While I can't say that it was poorly written, it certainly wasn't that well written either.
To sum up, a rather boring book that didn't teach and didn't entertain.

Living the iLife.......2004-11-27
This "How To" book by Shelly Brisbin is ideal for both the beginner and the intermediate Mac user because it thoroughly covers the software included with Mac OS X and iLife 04. The material is presented in an easy to-follow and underdstand-
able manner with lots of examples and illustrations - all in full color. Each chapter
is loaded with useful tips and sidebars that are easy to find because they are highlighted in color in the left margins. Also included throughout the book are lots of resources and links to software and hardware that will help improve your iLife.
In Part 1, the author thoroughly covers iTunes, Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iChat AV, iCal, and iSync with a chapter devoted to each. To make the material more interesting, she ends each chapter with a project that walks you step-by-step through a real-world task - a fun experience. With the help of Part 1, you should be able to create some nice gifts, such as, music CDs, photo CDs, quicktime movies, and DVDs that can be played on a TV. In Part 2, the author fully explains the other Apps available, such as: Address Book for maintaining contacts. Mail for managing your e-mail accounts. Safari for your internet browser, Sherlock for searching the internet. Font Book for managing the fonts available. Preview for opening all sorts of image files and PDF documents. Unix and the Terminal for those interested
in digging deeper into the depths of OS X. The last chapter, The Little Guys, covers some interesting and useful programs: Calculator, Chess, DVD Player, Image Capture, Internet Connect, QuickTime Player, Stickies, and Text Edit. The final section is Appendix A which covers material in the Utilities Folder that many Mac users may not know they have. The author breaks each one down into What it is, Do you need it, and the Skinny. They include: Activity Monitor, AirPort Admin Utility, AirPort Setup Assistant, Audio MIDI Setup, Bluetooth File Exchange, Color Sync Utility, Console, Digital Color Meter, Directory Access, Disk Utility, Grab, Keychain Access, Netinfo Manager, Network Utility, ODBC Admin, Printer Setup Utility, and System Profiler. This book covers a lot of material and the author does an outstanding job of making it interesting, educational, and useful. The layout of this book and the use of color throughout made it enjoyable to read. I now have an outstanding reference book.
iApps and Apps i-NOT.......2004-11-10
The Mac comes with a ton of applications built into the operating system that are poorly documented, if there is any documentation at all. Shelly Brisbin, has been writing about the Mac for 17 years, and in this book she goes over the following iApps: iTunes, GarageBand, iPhoto, IMovie, iDVD, iChat AV, ICal, iSync and the following Apps i NOT: Address Book, Mail, Safari, Sherlock, FontBook, Preview, The Terminal, and the Little Guys. Finally she covers a bunch of little programs that are almost hidden in the nooks and cranys of the operating system.
This is a book that will greatly expand what you think you can do with a Mac.
describes a lifestyle.......2004-10-31
A glossy paged book that gorgeously plays up a lifestyle supposedly affiliated with a Mac. Not unlike various magazines of gracious living (Town and Country, Architectural Digest...) Brisbin goes through the impressive portfolio of applications. GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes etc. The narrative is heavily illustrated with colour screen captures on most pages.
Relatively little computer jargon is tossed at you. Brisbin tries to write of uses that readers could relate to, and to write of these in straightforward terms, as a fellow user. The uses described tend to be things that images can be easily made of, or for which appropriate Mac screens can be made. A tight reinforcing of the text, for more effective learning.
Squint at this book and imagine yourself a few decades hence. The book is totally period of this Noughties decade. Not just because of the technology, but also because the usages reflect a common contemporary lifestyle that will one day date this era. Just like quadrophonic sound and tape decks for the 70s.

A lot of typing errors........2006-09-15
Not finish reading yet, but found typing error already, on page 30, put extreme as example twice.
Marred by grammatical and technical typos.......2002-12-10
This book "could" have been a great book had Mr. Bates proofread it once before publishing it. Having read GSM and GPRS papers before reading this book, I have to say that this book is replete with technical snafus [a case in point for those who suspect is on pg. 30 third paragraph of the Introduction to GSM chapter "paging message sent over PAGCH"] Now anyone with half a brain knows that
1. PAGCH is a GPRS logical channel NOT GSM.
2. It is an Access Grant channel NOT a paging channel which in case of GSM is PCH and PPCH in GPRS.
Now someone new to GPRS would be confused as hell after reading this [I admit I was confused for a couple of minutes too :-), since I am not supposed to be the expert but Mr. Bates was]
Structure wise the book is okay but needs a stringent review of the rambling grammer and the blatant mistakes. IMO its not worth forking 60 bucks. If Mr. Bates is reading this, I adjure you sir to take some time off from your speaking tours and correct the mistakes in this book.
Am giving it two stars for good layout. Taking away three stars for incorrect content.
Lack of context.......2002-06-03
Too much GPRS specific and lacking deep insight in GPRS deployment aspects
GPRS General Packet Radio Service.......2002-04-17
Excellent book! Written in easy to understand language but also provides the detail needed to help in understanding this technology. As with all the books written by Mr. Bates, this is a qualty piece of material.
Great reference book on GPRS, a must for your Tel.library.......2002-03-23
This book has a well structured flow and brings you up to speed quickly on GPRS. Easy to read, yet very informative.
This book would also make a great textbook, it helped me to come up to speed quickly. Great explanation of layers and interfaces. To the point, with plenty of supporting illustrations.

Book Description
This volume, arising from a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Greece in 1997, surveys latest research on computational electromagnetics and its applications. It presents the fundamental methods developed in the last 30 years as well as applications and comparisons of the various methods. Seven parts cover the following topics: integral equation techniques and method of moments solutions, finite element and boundary element techniques, finite difference time domain methods, transmission line methods, inverse scattering problems, semi-analytical and special numerical techniques, and parallel processing methods. Several technology applications such as radar cross section computations, EMC/EMI analysis, antenna and filter design, high-speed circuit structures, and biomedical engineering are analyzed. No other book covers this field so widely and the text may be used for graduate study.
