5 out of 5 stars Great E-text.......2001-09-05

It's the text of the future, having both printed and Electronic information at the same time. Text web site adds to the learning experience and you can go back time and again for a refresher.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Resource.......2000-06-21

I work as an adjunct at the University of Central Florida teaching a required course for students who will be entering the teaching profession. The text I use is "Teachers Discovering Computers".

The book's focus is on Computer, Information and Integration literacy. Each area is thoroughly covered in content detail, enhanced by photos and diagrams and supported with a wealth of unline material from the Cashman site. Every chapter has a review section, sites to go to on the web for additional information, and tips for teachers on integrating what they have learned. I would suggest anyone in or about to enter education, purchase this text so they too might make the most of technology in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Good hints and strategies..........2007-05-22

I am giving 5 stars because I think this is a good book, easy to read, and has some great hints and strategies in it. It's probably good for the first time online learner. To me, however, it was a bit simplistic...probably because I've have `been around the block'. I am great with organizing and prioritizing so some of the chapters weren't really for me.
Still, I think that many people will find valuable hints regarding making online learning fun and meaningful. The section on preparing your computer is also very helpful.

If you are unsure about online learning, this book is certain to help you.

5 out of 5 stars An essential companion.......2004-05-09

Not only is the online classroom a new environment for learning, it is also one for which few learners have been formally prepared. While texts such as Becoming a Master Student have successfully outlined techniques for operating within the traditional classroom, it has not been until E-Learning Companion that learners have been afforded tactics for succeeding with online coursework. Watkins and Corry's text powerfully demonstrate that by integrating online learning skills with student success skills learners can better ensure their success in online learning environments. Rife with tutorials, activities, and self-assessments, E-Learning Companion is an essential resource for online learners and instructors alike.

MCSE S/P KIT WINDOWS SVR 2003 CORE REQUIREMENTS

Amazon.com

In the certification craze of 1999-2001, tens of thousands of people earned their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) ratings. Those certifications are expiring now, just as Microsoft is coming out with Windows Server 2003 to replace the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. There may be a real opportunity for those who earn the Windows Server 2003 certification--and that's where MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements comes in. This four-book set (which comes with quiz software and a 180-day laboratory version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus a coupon for 15 percent off the cost of each of the four exams), combined with some hands-on practical work, should be all you need to earn the new MCSE rating or the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification.

Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall

Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293).

3 out of 5 stars Uhhh...........2007-08-08

I'm still trying to get through the first book 2 years later. But what's the hurry? I can always start my training tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...

Seriously, though, these books look a lot like the ones I used to study for my first MCSE, on NT4. Full of most of what you need to pass the exam, plus a lot of junk you don't. I think they're an attempt to trick/force you into learning enough to be more than a paper MCSE while soaking up enough info to pass the test.

The "knowledge" contained herein is no substitute for real world experience, but is daunting to tackle even for a seasoned professional. If you really know computers, and just want test info, I'd recommend something like the Transcender exams instead.

2 out of 5 stars Redundancy at it's best.. If you have 70-291 and 70-298, you have just about the whole 70-293.......2007-04-28

I have just gone through the 70-291 and 70-298 books, and went through this one ..... and was gravely dissapointed.. I felt like I was reading the same material as I just finished.. So with that said, I believe if you are going for tests, and you already own 70-291 and 70-298 there is no reason to go out and get the MSPress of 70-293 since the material would have already been covered...

1 out of 5 stars GET IT TOGETHER AMAZON. .......2007-02-23

I got a copy of the MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements, Exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, 70-294.I was very upset when I noticed that one of the books had a huge tear on the back cover. When you pay $200.00 for brand new books, in a sealed state they should be new when you take them out of the box , not dirty and beat up. Get it together Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent content.......2007-01-12

All you need to know to sort out the 90% of the Administration issues in the every day administrator's life. Must have.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but needs a lot of work to be a real test prep guide........2006-12-12

One would think that a Microsoft Press book would be better edited; more technically detailed and have more thogrough explanations. But one would be wrong if they thought so. Microsoft, it seems to this reader, slapped together this study guide to make a couple of extra bucks or to just keep the writers busy. The level of user experience listed in the guides as a prerequisite for taking the MCSE exams is greater than the level that the books are geared for. If one has the prerequisite level of experience recommended in the guides then these books will be well below your experience level. However if you are very new to Active Directory and server environments this study guide will give you a fair introduction.
I will say this about Planning and Maintaining Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure by Craig Zacker, Mr. Zacker does not have any MS certifications which does not induce a lot of confidence of the author, and omits lots of really important technical information that is very relevant to planning a network, especially his descriptions of TCP/IP planning and sub netting. I noticed several typos and even some incorrect lab answers in each of the books.
All of the labs and diagnostic procedures are done the Microsoft way, which occasionally is not the way that things are done in the real world.
Trancender tests are ok, but Testking prep tests are way better.

    Book Description

Learn to use PowerPoint in ways you never thought possible. Marcovitz shows how, providing practical instruction for using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create learning environments and educational materials that support and enhance student success. With the widespread availability of PowerPoint (every copy beginning with version 1997 comes with VBA built-in) schools have all the tools they need to create powerful and interactive multimedia resources. The true power of multimedia lies in its ability to engage students' minds. Professional multimedia tools are too difficult to learn, too expensive, or both, and although many teachers and students use HyperStudio or PowerPoint to develop multimedia projects, these projects often lack true interactivity. Using VBA with PowerPoint gives teachers and students an accessible way to easily create interactive multimedia resources and projects. After introducing the basics of educational planning, the design process, and the benefits of designing and using multimedia, this book offers the practical knowledge you need to create powerful educational resources. Learn to create projects that include:
  • Pictures, videos, recorded voices, and links to Web sites
  • Interactive menus
  • Quizzes and short-answer questions with automatic user-feedback
  • The ability to score quizzes
  • The ability to keep track of which presentation sections have or haven't been visited
  • The ability to allow the user to type and alter slides during the presentation
  • And much more The possibilities are endless. Anyone with basic PowerPoint skills can use this book to create powerful educational material for themselves, their colleagues, their students, or their own children.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good for one specific aspect.......2006-11-11

This book is an excellent resource if you want to learn how to use Visual Basic to write interactive quizzes in PowerPoint. It is definitely aimed at educators. There are better books out there for learning PowerPoint, but this book is definitely outstanding in this one area.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of a Programmer (without being one).......2006-07-17

If you're like me, experienced with PowerPoint, but not a programmer, then taking a trip into the world of vba scripting with David Marcovitz's "Powerful PowerPoint for Educators" makes it easy and enjoyable. This book is like having a conversation with the author who has "been there and done it" in terms of developing script that is practical and useful in so many PowerPoint projects you may need to develop. Among other objectives, I had the need to incorporate an interactive leadership style self-assessment in my cbt of the same name, and thanks to David's book I was able to let the user make his/her selections (as well as change them too), track scores, and then take those scores on to subsequent slides to discern the meaning of each of them (not to mention printing as well as saving those scores based on user preference). And of course, all along the way, I learned a great deal about other scripting options that proved useful in this application as well as for future projects.
If you're at the stage where you need to use vba scripting, this is the book that should be your primer. It will take you where you need to go!

    2 out of 5 stars Improperly Titled.......2006-07-11

This book is not really properly titled -- it should be "Using Scripting to Make PowerPoint Interactive." The author makes it clear (part way through the book) that he is not writing this for people with programming knowledge -- all he intends for you to do is copy the scripts he provides and use them as he intends. He even discourages the reader to read what little is written about programming.

In addition, the $45 price tag is ludicrously high. This book is worth $19.95 tops.

5 out of 5 stars Only book on VBA devoted to PowerPoint.......2004-04-29

Every computer coordinator and interested computer teacher, anyone who does instructional presentations / training, and college level professors who are accustomed to using PowerPoint and those constructing online programs for medical CEU programs, now using such programs as Agility Presenter or Appraiso would benefit from this book. This method of using VBA with PowerPoint truly allows for authentic, interactive, memorable, meaningful, and fun e-learning with a program many trainers already use. Sure you can do this with Flash, but most instructors in other fields than computer technology really don't have time for that learning curve. Maybe the computer teacher has time, but not the social studies teacher nor the medical professor teaching second year medical students interview techniques, for example. As an instructor it would be great to provide an additional e-learning module on CD that you created with PowerPoint and VBA. It will leave a lasting impression.
I have searched many a thousand paged books for dribs and drabs of VBA on PowerPoint. This book immediately gives you useful, real world problems and gets right to the point in about 180+ pages and contains more information than many thousand page books that cost considerably more. The author also provides a Web site with actual samples of the programs that work in case you run into difficulties.
I went on a newsgroup site to ask a VBA question about PowerPoint before Amazon sent my book. Normally I receive answers that are completely beyond anything I need or want. It just so happens that the book's author answered my question and helped me solve my problem and told me about his book, at which point I realized I had recently ordered it. I often rate books, but I rarely write reviews. This one deserves all 5 stars and then add five more! I can't say enough about it. It is one of a kind.

    Book Description

This combination CD-ROM and workbook of technology activities for pre-service teachers is designed for the Educational Technology or Technology for Teachers course found in all teacher preparation programs. The CD and portfolio-development workbook focus on what students learn and how they learn it rather than on what teachers say and do. The CD models innovative instructional techniques for classroom use. In the process students create a portfolio of technology learning activities which they can use when seeking their first teaching assignment. Exercises range from the conventional (multiple-choice quizzes and term identification) to the innovative (online journals and interactive Web exercises).

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great idea- -but inside out.......2002-01-06

This is a workbook/CD text for training teachers in the field of educational technology. The text covers topics which are central to classroom teaching with technology: learning styles, multimedia student authoring, evaluating software, classroom management, presentation with technologies, assessment, and the Internet. The exercises are well done and promote thoughtful reflection as well as mastery of the content.

Unfortunately, the central premise of the workbook/CD package is inside out. Unlike many texts with accompanying CD, the CD in this set contains the central content of the text, while the book is merely the accompanying workbook material. On the one hand, it's nice to have a workbook for students to write in. But on the other hand, it would be much more effective use of the technology if the students could read the texts in book format and then complete all of the work electronically using software on the CD. In fact, many of the workbook exercises are also presented in Webpage format on the CD, but the vocabulary and review exercises do not appear there, even though they could easily be assessed online. (The answers to the exercises are printed in the back of the workbook.)

A more serious problem is that all of the content text is contained only on the CD. Thus, a student must access the CD in order to read the content materials. The content materials vary widely in quality, from excellent in-depth articles to terse PowerPoint presentations. Some of the content texts are a few pages long, but several run to over 100 pages. Most are not in HTML format, but in Adobe PDF, set to display as very short pages, similar to presentation slide format. Since the content does not appear in the workbook, students will either need to read everything online, or else print hundreds of short pages so that they can read them offline. Students who only have access to computers on campus will have no choice but to print the pages if they want to read them at home. I really like the idea of a CD/text package, but it would far more useful if the text included the content, while the CD focused on the exercises, with built-in automated assessment and editing capabilities.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better. But, a lot of good information. .......2006-08-17

Don't get me wrong, between ExamCram2, Cisco, and Sybex, this was my favorite book. It is unfortunate that there really is no good one choice for studying for the BCRAN and, though opinions vary, I found it to be the hardest of the three tests I have thus far taken.

The Sybex book is organized in a strange fashion which I found to be a bit confusing. I read it once, and rarely picked it up again. While browsing through it just now, on the top of page 95 I read "config title." Title?! Sybex's chapter on VPN was absolutely horrible. However, having said that, there were a couple things I liked in the Sybex book, such as the tendency to (sometimes) include complete configurations shown from start to finish.

Cisco's book was full of good and useless information. A portion of the book was spent on useless things such as choosing WAN equipment. Though very useful in the field, this information is completely worthless on the test; there are other Cisco books published for this purpose. This book claims to be an "Exam certification guide" hence it should cover what is on the test, not what the author thinks a CCNP should know. I also found the author's unneeded discussion of the 700 series commands to be annoying. The author also tended to get a little too deep into theory which, although interesting, is not on the test.

The EC2 book was my favorite and I found myself referring to it more and more as exam grew near. I could not understand how to configure VPN till I looked at EC2. It gets right to the point, it tells you how it works, shows you how to configure it, and moves on. Skimming and reviewing this book is very easy due to careful organization. Nevertheless, I could have given this book a higher rating if it weren't for the errors (which I have tried to report with no success).

Let's name a few mistakes just for fun. Pg. 208, bottom, second to last sentence only, should say "never DEactivate the line." Pg. 73, question #6, no, chap never sends the password in clear text. (or at all, it sends a HASH) Perhaps there is an undocumented feature but, if so, who cares? We'd use Pap. Pg. 114, I don't care if you are right or wrong, Cisco always refers to the D channel as 16kbs framing and signaling. Remember, on the exam, the right answer is ALWAYS the Cisco answer. 233, CBWFQ, Bit bucket?! Refer to Cisco for a better explanation of CBWFQ. Page 124, HUGE MISTAKE - dialer load-threshold is a NOT a percentage, it's 1-255. Another huge mistake, page 146, dialer pools, the correct command is dialer pool-member 1, not dialer pool 1. Pg. 214 - OSPF does NOT do unequal load balancing!! Do not mess with the metrics to make a 128 isdn think it is 10bt. If you can't tell me why equal load balancing between ISDN and Ethernet is bad, you need to retake the CCNA. Page 122, dialer-map is an INTERFACE command. Also, why are they talking about dialer-group under dialer-map? Dialer-group should have been talked about on the previous page under interesting traffic.

I am sure I could find mistakes in the other two books as well if I had studied them harder. (I found about as many mistakes in Cisco's BSCI book, not including the ones noted by Cisco in the errata) It is a shame that there is no one good book one can review to pass this particular test. My advice would be to buy all three, or at least EC2 and Cisco. To say thanks for reading my long review, I will give you one last gem. On Cisco's site, one can find the "Career Certification Paths" which give a pitiful list of topics that will be on the test. I wish I could tell you that if it isn't on the list, it isn't on the test. But, that simply isn't true. However, if it is on the list, it is almost certainly on the test - no matter what any book says. A simple review showed me that WRED, RFC 1483/2684 bridging (hint - in relation to dsl), and dialer watch were not explained in any of the three books! Google them. As this list is changed without notice, I would highly advise reviewing it yourself. Good luck.

If you didn't have to pass the exam, the Server+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide would be a pretty darn good book to take you to the next level, right after you've passed your A+ exam. But as it stands, a critical lack of focus on passing the exam means that the key topics may be lost in a flurry of side details.

First things first: you'll need a fair amount of hardware information at your fingertips even to understand this book, which is not for beginners. Bigelow, a respected hardware author, gives brief explanations of the basics, but the fact is that if you don't understand the difference between IDE and SCSI technology, or are still trying to figure out the differences between various Ethernet cablings, you may be lost early on. Bigelow starts out slow, but slides rapidly into a barrage of technospeak that is lucid and understandable, but may require repeated readings from those not up to speed.

If you are up to speed, though, you'll find that Bigelow does a very serviceable job explaining the internal components of the PC, and utilizes a wealth of detail in order to explain exactly how each component works. Bigelow explains each part in isolation, meaning that if you understand how every port, board, and cable of a PC hangs together, you'll be able to keep the full picture in mind while he explains exactly what this cable does. If you can do that, then this reference is invaluable, since he goes into great detail which you will be able to fit into a wider perspective, coming away with a comprehensive knowledge of server hardware issues from the motherboard up. Unfortunately, if you're still a little sketchy on some of the finer operations of the complete PC, you may get so caught up in learning the number and function of pins on the cable he's discussing that you may forget its overall importance to a healthy server in the first place.

Which is a continual problem with the book; it doesn't focus on the exam. Bigelow provides such a wealth of information that you won't know what's important to remember and what's not; when it comes to test time, you may find yourself flailing about to remember facts that nobody told you CompTIA considered critical. Although the wide scale of the book has to be commended in an age when many books provide just enough knowledge to pass the test and give you no real-world information, the irony is present and weighty: reading this fine book from cover to cover may actually be enough to get you a job, but not the Server+ certificate.

In addition, the book doesn't fully map to the exam goals. Although the book doesn't necessarily slack in providing details on things like cabling, baselines, and network operating systems, it's obvious that Bigelow's heart is still firmly in hardware issues. You'll get lots of information about hard drives and CMOS setup, but comparatively little on creating baseline server readings and troubleshooting software problems. Another minor issue is the scarcity of pictures; they are always helpful when discussing internal PC parts.

In short, this book is woefully mismarketed: it's a fine hardware book and is a valid addition to almost any MIS technician's hardware library. Furthermore, if you get the information in this book down, you will understand the hardware aspects of a server with enough not only to pass, but probably to stand head and shoulders above many working technicians today. But unfortunately, that means that it isn't a true all-in-one certification book--just an adjunct for a larger course of study. --William Steinmetz

      1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2002-10-11

A waste of resources and completely inadequate for the Server+ exam; it does not cover all of the exam objectives. I am surprised and disappointed that Mike Meyers would have anything to do with this prime recycle bin material.

1 out of 5 stars This book is really worthless.......2002-09-30

This book is very poor for the content, the exam is based on hardware theory but this book spends more time on the instructions on how to install individual hardware devices which is good if you lost the manual for the device but is not needed for the exam.

I suggest going for the Server+ Bible which is very well written and aimed towards the test not away like this one is.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Doesn't Cut It.......2002-06-01

This text fails to prepare readers for the Server + exam. It contains some misspellings and inconsistencies here and there, but I really began to worry when answers to some of the practice test questions directly contradicted the text, such as the maximum throughput of a ATAPI-4 device. The text says 33MB/sec, but the practice test answer is 66MB/sec. The text also contains pages and pages of codes particular to individual brands of controllers and operating systems. Also, the term ?Windows 98? is mentioned countess times throughout the text, although it is (obviously) not a NOS.

Much of the information in this text appears dated but with just a few words amended here and there to update it. For example, although this book was published in 2001, one sentence reads in part that ?by late 2000, the PC industry will likely move to the Ultra-ATA/100 drives.? This book was poorly edited.

Unlike this book, the actual certification exam made no mention of Windows 98 and rarely focused on specific operating systems. The exam also contained questions about topic mentioned absolutely nowhere in the text. Two examples are Grandfather-Father-Son backup routines and terminology involving server rack measurements, just to name a few.

I could locate no addendums or software updates on the Osborne website prior to and during my study, indicating that neither the publisher nor the author intends to correct these critical discrepancies.

I have successfully self-studied for both Novell and Microsoft certification exams and know the amount of effort required to succeed. But even if I had had this book at my side during the exam, it would not have helped because it simply does not contain vital topics. I hope both the author and the publisher remove this bound snake oil from the market so others don?t make the same expensive mistake as I.

      2 out of 5 stars Inadequate.......2002-05-15

The writing and style were not conducive to effective understanding and assimilation.

Topics covered often did not provide enough supporting information. The parts were not put together in proper order. Many new terms, concepts and other things that were thrown into the discourse were not explained until later in the book.

This was not a well thought out or organized book.

3 out of 5 stars mr Bigelow's Server + Book: Pros and Cons.......2001-11-03

Pro: gives in depth information about subjects. I loved reading about the latency time of UPSses, motherboard and baseboard code details!
Pro: Good for newbies to get a started on server components.
Con: Biased towards Compaq Raid controllers. The exam is neutral.
Con: Mentions and refers to Windows 95 Device manager regularly which is NOT a Server OS!

I'm an HP Hardware 2nd line support qualifier for HP Netservers. With over 2 years of experience troubleshooting all sorts of issues 8 hours a day, Cluster Certified, HP Star Certified, HP Star Troubleshooting Certified. I wanted to get myself vendor neutral certified as well, and I figured I'd buy this book.
In my opinion, I passed the test mostly on work experience.

I believe the book is lacking some in the administering side of Back Ups etc, policies and procedures like disaster recovery. It does not cover enough Non-MS OS troubleshooting.

The scope and feel of Comptia exams (Server+ and Network +) is that they are BROAD (also Netware and Unix questions), mostly not too in depth, but requiring a firm understanding of basics.
Comptia is aiming at work experience, which is the way the test feels. Dont be so hard on this book, other books arent much better! Just dont depend on this book as your one resource, and books are not a substitute for experience. To have everything possibly covered on the exam in a book, you'd need 350 more pages!

Although another reviewer wrote that this book goes too much in depth, this is not my experience. Even if you may not need everything about IDE or SCSI in the depth covered, REAL LIFE regularly goes way deeper than mentioned in this book, and there are even errors for nitpickers like me. The coverage of High availablity and clusters was under par.

My main issue with this book is that it was too much oriented towards hardware technology, whereas the exam is also oriented towards real life OS administration, troubleshooting, and running Back ups, policies etc. The exam is trying to make sure you have your act together as a Server proffesional.

The CD was better than the book, but had some small errors in it.
