Book Description
Stalking has emerged as a major social issue over the past decade to become the subject of intensive clinical and research study. This volume combines the authors' extensive clinical experience working with stalkers and their victims with a critical and thorough review of the existing literature. Major topics of discussion include the emergence and definition of stalking; effects and reduction of impacts on victims; and types of stalking. The authors have provided an informative, practical, and absorbing work that is a major step forward in elucidating the nature, causes, impact, and management of stalking.
Customer Reviews:
Lucid, well researched and useful.......2005-01-12
This book is well organized, articulate and insightful. The only reason why I did not give it 5 stars is because the case law cited specific to stalking was rather outdated. Excellent for a theoretical framework surrounding the issue of stalking.

I Am Not Myself These Days is Josh Kilmer-Purcell's outrageously intimate memoir of a young man living a double life in the heady days and nights of mid-'90s New York City. As we follow Kilmer-Purcell through alcohol-fueled nights and a love affair with Jack, a crack-addicted male escort, he offers up an alternative universe where normal is "a Normal Rockwell painting that, if you leaned in close, would discover is made up entirely of misfits."
By day, Josh drudges off to a Soho-based advertising firm where he creates ad campaigns for corporate clients. At night, he dons live goldfish to complete the look of Aqua, a 7-foot-tall award-winning drag queen who trolls gay clubs in search of her next drink/one night stand. In between, he spends his time trying to build a stable, loving relationship with someone whose beeping pager is a constant reminder of the pair's almost inevitable fate. Yet even as Josh's escapades get increasingly absurd, Kilmer-Purcell is always there to remind us that the story we're reading is real, and that fundamental human emotions and desires are essentially universal. In the end, everyone just wants to be loved and to fit in somewhere. And while the lesson may seem hokey at times, Kilmer-Purcell's sharp wit rescues the memoir from becoming an exaggerated sob story:
The night before any major holiday is always a blockbuster night at gay clubs. Thousands... across the city fortifying themselves for long trips home where they'll be met with awkward silences, stilted conversations and cousins with whom they'd experimented with decades ago.
From start to finish, I Am Not Myself These Days is an extraordinary journey into an amazing life. To be a fly on the wall is an adventure that should not be missed. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
I Am Not Myself These Days follows a glittering journey through Manhattan's dark underbelly -- a shocking and surreal world where alter egos reign and subsist (barely) on dark wit and chemicals...a tragic romantic comedy where one begins by rooting for the survival of the relationship and ends by hoping someone simply survives. Kilmer-Purcell is a terrifically gifted new literary voice who straddles the divide between absurdity and normalcy, and stitches them together with surprising humor and lonely poignancy. As Booklist raved "as tart and funny as a Noel Coward play, for Kilmer-Purcell is especially good at dialogue, and, as in Coward's best plays, under the comedy lies the sad truth that even at our best, we are all weak, fallible fools. Again and again in this rich, adventure-filled book, Kilmer-Purcell illustrates the truth of Blake's proverb, 'The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.'"

A resonating love story, in drag.......2007-09-14
Yes, this book is funny -- very funny, in fact. And yes, it is titillating, a peek into a world of drag queens and male escorts and a life that is seemingly alien to most potential readers. And yet, "I Am Not Myself These Days" turns out to be a universal love story, one in which even the most outrageous characters become familiar and real.
Kilmer-Purcell doesn't shy away from the details of his life as an over-the-top drag queen in New York City, nor does he soften the story of his tumultuous relationship with his male escort lover or of that lover's drug abuse that ultimately tore them apart. He treats his subjects with a self-deprecating humor that lies over his vulnerability like a dusting of powdered sugar, avoiding both maudlin sentimentality and denial. In the narrative, the author dulls his pain and his fragility with alcohol, but he does so without any pretense of self control or toughness. When he meets and falls in love with Jack, he finds both redemption and destruction, and in the dizzying rise and then subsequent disintegration of their relationship, the author discovers unknown wells of strength and compassion. He does so without bitterness or judgment, ultimately telling a story of love found and never subsequently lost.
Like John Irving at his best, Josh Kilmer-Purcell brings eccentric characters from an unfamiliar world and makes them not just sympathetic, but real and even familiar. He shows that hearts love and break for everyone, and in sharing his funny, sad and ultimately beautiful story, he allows our hearts to do the same. A very highly recommended read.
Love it!.......2007-08-22
I just finished reading this book and I LOVE IT! It's a must read, I think I have a new favorite author.
Grotesque! Disgusting! Terrific!.......2007-07-30
"If we don't laugh at it all, we'll cry," my good friend Father David used to tell me about the horrific parts of our lives. Kilmer-Purcell is brilliant in his insight into human nature--as flawed and decadent as it is. His memoir is shocking, funny--shockingly funny, at times--and poignantly written. Bravo, Josh. Aqua lives!
Impossible to Put Down.......2007-07-15
I had the book sitting on my shelf for a few months and picked it up last night -- in a desperate effort to rid myself of a bad book I had just been reading.
I didn't put it down except to sleep and shower.
No need for the recap -- that has handily been done by others before me -- just know that if you pick this book up, you'll be caught up in a whirlwind of laughter, sadness, relatability in ways you would never imagine and harsh truths.
I was fortunate enough to have the paperback with some extra materials, including a follow-up about "Jack" that just about shattered my heart.
I look forward to new materials from Kilmer-Purcell.
A very quick, easy read that will utterly surprise you.
Great fun!.......2007-05-19
Wild and woolly, and how I ever missed Aqua at the Tunnel I'll never know!
Book Description
If asked to identify which children rank lowest in relation to national educational norms, have higher school dropout and absence rates, and more commonly experience learning problems, few of us would know the answer: white, urban Appalachian children. These are the children and grandchildren of Appalachian families who migrated to northern cities in the 1950s to look for work. They make up this largely "invisible" urban group, a minority that represents a significant portion of the urban poor. Literacy researchers have rarely studied urban Appalachians, yet, as Victoria Purcell-Gates demonstrates in Other People's Words, their often severe literacy problems provide a unique perspective on literacy and the relationship between print and culture.
A compelling case study details the author's work with one such family. The parents, who attended school off and on through the seventh grade, are unable to use public transportation, shop easily, or understand the homework their elementary-school-age son brings home because neither of them can read. But the family is not so much illiterate as low literate--the world they inhabit is an oral one, their heritage one where print had no inherent use and no inherent meaning. They have as much to learn about the culture of literacy as about written language itself.
Purcell-Gates shows how access to literacy has been blocked by a confluence of factors: negative cultural stereotypes, cultural and linguistic elitism, and pedagogical obtuseness. She calls for the recruitment and training of "proactive" teachers who can assess and encourage children's progress and outlines specific intervention strategies.

Really eye-opening! An amazing book........2007-10-04
This book is fabulous- it lays out all of the problems with teaching children and adults how to read, and stresses the importance of surrounding children with books at a young age. I learned a lot from this book!
an introduction into low-literacy in america.......2005-10-22
Having just finished the book for my Foundations of Literacy class in college I must say it gives a very good view of the life and struggles a family goes thorugh when in their world print does not exist.
Jenny and Donny, a mother and son have struggle for a few years on gaining literacy. Jenny, an urban Applalacian wants to learn to read so she can help her son with his schoolwork. She wants Donny to be retained a year so he can "catch up" on what he is missing. Together they embark on a quest towards literacy with the help of the author of this book.
When a book is required for school most of us will probably groan but I must say this was one of the most interesting books I have read. Considering my major is early childhood education and I am interested in topics about emergent literacy. Anyways the book really explores the life of those who live in non-print homes and must rely on others when it comes to reading/writing. I also liked how it introduced us to the urban Applalacian minority and how they are a "invisible minority." We learn about the stereotypes they are given, the values they hold, etc.
All in all the book was particulary interesting. I wouldn't reccommend it for pleasure reading unless of course you are VERY interested in topics about literacy but for those of you who need to read it for school do not fret! It is an easy and very interesting read.
Informative and Thought Provoking Research.......2005-10-07
Purcell-Gates opens up the important issue of literacy in America through the lens of an Appalachian mother and son, who have a non-literary background. Through the son and mother's attempts to learn how to read and write, we get a glimpse into the cultural background of the Appalachian people. Perhaps the book's most compelling findings are the stereotypical attitudes people have towards this white minority people. It is clear that many people need to spend time and understand the cultural background of people, and not just pass uninformed judgments upon them. This book is an important voice in the educational debates about how to approach learning in our public schools.
Accessible Study of Illiteracy.......1998-08-28
Purcell-Gates avoids the weighty conventions of academic writing and thus opens her studies and insights to the larger world. The book recounts her experiences over two years tutoring a completely illiterate mother and her nearly equally illiterate son. Purcell-Gates, who at the time worked at the local university and literacy center, tells their story with compassion and a strong effort to get at the causes and perpetuation of illiteracy in 20th century American cities, schools, and families. Hers is a noble cause and this is a superb and educational book. She serves her subjects well.
Book Description
Sparkling miniature opera, filled with intense drama and elegant song, lasts no more than an hour, yet unfolds a virtuoso range of expressive music, from a high-spirited sailors' dance to Dido's touching lament "When I am laid in earth." First presented in 1689, remains the oldest operatic work still popularly performed. Authoritative early edition.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Baroque Opera!.......2000-05-03
This very short Baroque opera composed by Purcell, is probably the best English baroque opera. I contains the most beautiful lament "When I am laid in the earth" is the most beautiful opera air. Also, the final chorus ending in Gm is very beautiful. The score contains the instrumentation, the table of contents, and critical notes on the piece. The editor actually put in the Harpsichord part instead of having the Basso line with Figured Bass so that is an advantage. The Opera takes little over an hour, and the score is full of Basso Continuo arias. buy this score if you are a baroque lover!
Book Description
The Corrupting Sea is a history of the relationship between people and their environments in the Mediterranean region over some 3,000 years. It advocates a novel analysis of this relationship in terms of microecologies and the often extensive networks to which they belong. This is the first major work since Braudel's The Mediterranean to address the problems of studying the area as a whole and on a long time-scale.The authors emphasize the value of comparison between prehistory, Antiquity and the Middle Ages. They draw on an exceptionally wide range of evidence - literary works, documents, archaeology, scientific reports and social anthropology. The themes addressed include past conceptions of the Mediterranean, its historiography, the history of primary production, the rhythms of exchange and communication, the pace of environmental and technological change, the geography of religion, and the contribution of Mediterranean social anthropology to an assessment of the region's unity. The book offers a provocative and innovative approach to the history of the Mediterranean, explaining what has made Mediterranean history distinctive.

Mediterranean microecological connectivity.......2002-12-02
Mediterranean microecological connectivity
I like reading history. I enjoy with it. I am not a professional historian. In the last few years I have tried and read books offering a broad scope and general overviews of history such as this one.
In this work, the authors intend to study Mediterranean history as a whole, the history of the region. For them, the Mediterranean is only loosely defined, distinguishable from its neighbours to degrees that vary with time, geographical direction and topic. Its boundaries are not the sort to be drawn easily on a map. Its continuities are best thought of continuities of form or pattern, within which all is mutability.
In that sense, the distinctiveness of Mediterranean history results (they propose) from the paradoxical coexistence of a milieu of relatively easy seaborne communications with a quite unusually fragmented topography of microregions in the sea's coastlands and islands. The different chapters of the book are aimed to impressionistically show some of the prime ingredients in the normal variability and connectivity of Mediterranean microregions: the shifting along a spectrum of possibilities; the fluctuating relations between pastoralism and agriculture; the manipulative state with its taxes and symbols; the mobility of people both voluntarily -economic migration- and compulsory -military service- (not necessarily very distinct); a history of Mediterranean redistribution as inseparable from that of the people (who are often profoundly mobile) who produce, store, process, transport and consume.
The authors also warn that several central topics have been reserved for a Volume 2 to come in the future: climate, disease, demography and the relations between the Mediterranean and other major areas of the globe.
I have rated it four starts. Considering its content, I think it should be five; considering its readability, three (sometimes falling to two, sometimes raising to four).
Other books of "global history" I would recommend to read are "The Rise of the West" by William H. McNeill, "World History. A new perspective" by Clive Ponting, "The Great Divergence", by Kenneth Pomeranz, "The Dynamics of Global Dominance. European Overseas Empires 1415-1980", by David Abernethy and "The History of Government", by S.E. Finer.
A prequel of Braudel.......2001-03-03
Horden and Purcell have produced in The Corrupting Sea a comprehensive overview of the ancient Mediterranean world in the annaliste tradition of Braudel's Mediterranee et le monde mediterraneen a l'epoque de Philippe II. A historian of medicine (Horden) and a classicist (Purcell), the authors develop the thesis that one must examine the microenvironments of the Mediterranean in order to understand the broad trends of the region's culture and history.
This work is a must read for everyone who is interested in the Mediterranean --classicists and medievalists in particular. Every public library in the world would be well advised to purchase a copy. In addition to the narrative that is replete with extensive commentary, the volume has a very useful set of bibliographical essays as well as the normal scholarly apparatus.

Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to strategic foresight.......2006-12-15
This book, Strategic Foresight (the combination of foresight thinking with strategy), is about 'standing in the future', your desired future and then looking back from there to take the actions that that future would require to bring to fruition. Strategy is developed from this place, where some, or all of the current assumptions that underlie the current reality will no longer hold true. Some futurists call this 'backcasting'.
The authors describe to alternative mental models ('Mental Model 1' MM1 and MM2). MM1 is about looking forward from your current stance and assumptions and designing strategy from that place, it's linear, incremental and does not meet the needs of our changing society. MM1 is based on the military model of strategy development. By way of contrast MM2 looks back from the future, is unbound from current assumptions and leads to unlimited ideas and resources, it's more based on natural systems, non linear dynamics, open systems, that kind of thing.
From here they start out by outlining the key drivers for change in the world and a useful model for looking at and examining the key components of those drivers, using several examples. Most chapters include several questions to reflect upon so that you can personalise your learning from the book and apply it to your situation. The book moves on to outline how to introduce foresight thinking into your organisation, using Nokia as an example (Nokia, is an interesting example, most people don't know the company's whole story and that it was not a manufacturer of electronics even a few decades ago). The authors developed their own model, 'The Strategic Biosphere' based on a biological worldview as a way of conceiving strategy using foresight principles, and considering that the 'organisation and strategy ... will unfold in a continuous biological process of learning and mistakes, of success, failure and readjustment.' Then they describe in detail in the book how you'd go about integrating futures thinking into your business and strategy with extensive examples, focal questions, charts and diagrams, and thought provoking ideas, all the time keeping it simple and keeping it relevant and applicable to your unique business situation. Included is a useful bibliography for further reading.
The book is a quick and easy read, one which clearly, simply and without excessive jargon explains their model, and it is a useful model, even though it is only one of many.
Australia has a few decent futurists, one of the best (I think his work is world class (and I've read a lot)), who has published much work is Sohail Inayatullah. Another, who's published more introductory work is Richard Slaughter.
If you're still undecided, you can download the first chapter from the author's website. They also have 'threads' of future issues that are updated regularly and trends, although there are many places on the web these can also be found and it's good to actually do your own research so you can keep your finger on the pulse of what's happening.
This is a solid book and will challenge some of your thinking and prevent some alternative viewpoints and from that perspective is worthwhile reading.
Compels us to pay attention to embryonic signs in our environment.......2005-09-15
Strategic Foresight is easy to read. The authors explain how to (i) stand at a chosen point in the future (ii) look back to the present and (iii) develop a rolling plan to take oneself, one's company, city or country into the future. For the extremely busy reader, the first three chapters give you a good picture of the technique of foresighting and how it might be applied. The book helps to explain several emerging trends, even trends in the behaviours of our children but which, up to now, we have had some difficulty in interpreting. The book compels us to pay attention to embryonic signs in our environment and challenges us to come to terms with what they might portend. Required reading for all those who are interested in deriving competitive insights for success.
It is very exciting stuff.........2004-01-20
To create the world where your business will be in 2, 5 -10 years time and draw your company in that environment is very scary thing. But makes a lot of since. It means a lot of reserch and planning but is extremely exciting. You will discover amazing stuff if you take this onboard. Easy to read and common sence.Very much recommended to today's business owners who want to be in business in 10, 20, 30... years time.

This book was made possible with the help of a large group of teachers, professionals, students, and volunteers. It should be included in every family's collection of books to read and share.
If you like Project Wild you will love this book.......1998-09-05
Any Environmental Educator or Scout Leader who has ever gone to a program like Geosphere, Project Wild, NatureQuest or Project Learning Tree will LOVE this book.
Everything is organized by lessons and activities that are coded to match certain skills like Predation, Plant Succession, etc.
I have used this book for years at Boy Scout Summer Camps and I know the American Camping Association recommends this book for anyone involved in teaching Environmental Skills & Nature at a camp setting.
Perhaps the only draw back is the plain colorless sketches of the book. A teacher would appreciate the book's content but I would not get this book for a kid. Having said that, this book is a great pick for any leader, summer camp, or school where teaching an understanding & appreciation of nature is a priority.

Thin Book, Tremendous Ideas.......2006-11-19
This little book is packed with important concepts for artists. The wisdom presented is essential for visual composition, regardless of the specific medium.
The author's treatment of value is especially valuable (pun intended). Color is important, but value is even more important. He explains why and shows how.
review from a learning "artist".......2005-04-09
My instructor has many books but suggested this one over all for new students. I found it very helpful and suggest it as a good start for learners. I like the colors used and had good results with the various exercises.
One of the Best!.......2005-01-29
Besides being an excellent overview of watercolor techniques helpful to the experienced as well as the novice, this book provides valuable guidance for enhacing the "seeing" skills we need for being better artists, no matter what medium is used. Purcell's book is among my favorites and I refer to it frequently.
WASTE OF MONEY - get Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.......2004-10-22
This is a poor knock-off of the classic book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Save your money and go back to the original! And if you are a painter, try the new book she has written, called, simply, COLOR. It's fabulous
A book on how to see........2004-06-10
This book is very effective in teaching the artist or beginner to see in the language of art, which is shape, color and edge. The medium used in the book is watercolor. The approach to technique is simplified to the essentials to get going in water color, but any medium would apply. I enjoyed the simple approach. The author was a teacher and I'm sure a good one at that. The book wasn't bogged down with unnecessary "how to" stuff. Each chapter covers another aespect of seeing with very understandable text and examples. I found this book to be a good example of how to transulate all that stuff out there into the language of art. If that is what you want to do I recommend it. If on the other hand you wish to spend you time at the art supply store trying all the hundreds of supplies and techniques and not seeing and painting than this book is not for you.
For me the only week part of the book was the last two chapters, but then I've been painting for 25 years.
