5 out of 5 stars Sometimes it is best just to take it slow.......2007-07-11

Turnpikes and superhighways have improved much about our lives, making commutes to work and other vital travel easier and faster. Sometimes, though, it's great to just slow down and enjoy the scenery - and that's just what Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways helps all of us to do.

In this book, you'll discover plenty about out-of-the-way places that can be reached by traveling on two-lane roads in the United States. Discover lesser known monuments, museums, restaurants and roads, and enjoy the offbeat sites that you'll see. It's likely that you'll even learn something new about your own state or hometown.

Road Trip USA recommends places to eat and stay and it provides survival guides to some of America's most intriguing cities. If you've fallen into a vacation rut, this book will break you of it, as at least one quirky destination - and probably many more - will grab your attention and cause you to go on your own road trip rendezvous.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not a great reference.......2007-03-09

This book details five north-south and five east-west journeys across the US. The book is arranged into 10 sections, one for each path, each of which lists, in order, all the sites worth seeing on the particular route in that section.
While it is a good collection of sites, the book is laid out in a way that makes it useful only if you read the entire thing. There is no easy way to look up the attractions by state or as dots on a map or by type or anything like that. There isn't even a table of contents at the beginning of the book or of each section. The only reference you have to a particular site is the blurb itself.
So while some may find this to be a useful guide, I'd say it needs a bit more work before it's a good reference.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for the Road.......2007-03-05

When you think of summer, and of freedom and adventure, you automatically think "road trip." Sometimes, you just want to jump into your car for a day trip and, other times, you'd love to trek around America for an entire summer. Some trips you know exactly where you're going and what you plan to see and, other times, you go where the spirit of travel leads you.

In Jamie Jensen's book, Road Trip USA: Cross Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways, we're given quality information on fun places to visit, including places where celebrities stayed, restaurants with apple pie tasty enough for a visit (or two!) and scenic locations worth seeing just for their sheer beauty.

Trivia, myths and legends provided in the book makes trips even more entertaining. The tips of where to take photographs are terrific and provide a road trip traveler the chance to easily capture the most interesting sights for friends and family back home.

I like how Jensen covers 35,000 miles of road tripping in just one book and we appreciate his color-coded routes. Nobody likes getting lost and he pays attention to the smallest details that provide travelers comfort, including the call numbers of local radio stations.

Get off the major highways and use Jensen's book for eleven road trips that you'll never forget!

great book, I like that you can start at any part of each trip. After reading some sections that I have already traveled, I'm going to retrace some of them because I found that I missed alot of interesting places that were listed in the book. Great reading, can't wait till this summer to let the adventures begin.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful Bible Map Book - available many ways.......2007-05-08

This Bible map book shows where places mentioned in the Bible are located today. This spiral-bound book contains 12 full-color Bible maps, each with a clear plastic overlay that shows modern-day cities and countries. Includes the following maps: * The Middle East during Old Testament Times * Overlay of modern-day Middle East * The Assyrian Empire, Babylonian Kingdoms and Persian Empire *Overlay of same areas with modern-day countries * The Holy Land during the time of the Old Testament * Overlays of United Kingdom, Divided Kingdom, modern-day Israel and surrounding countries * The Holy Land during the time of Jesus * Overlay of modern-day Holy Land * Paul's Journeys (Roman Empire at AD 60) * Overlay of modern-day Mediterranean area. The print is relatively large for an Bible atlas (not giant print, but not as bad as some Bible atlases).

This product is available many ways, so check the ISBN above and make sure you are ordering the correct one, because this review appears on several product pages.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Asset to Bible Study........2007-01-10

This book has been worth it's weight in gold in my study of the Bible, as it depicts the old world and the one that is now. It's really neat to see the territories that Abraham traveled so many years ago and compare them to the way things are today. I think this book is GREAT!! Also, the layout of the book is such that you can see on one page the changes that have taken place over the years to these areas; no flipping through 5 pages to see where areas/borders have changed. Everything is visually right in front of you on one page.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Bible Geography.......2006-12-06

Then and Now Bible Maps is an excellent resource for helping put Bible locations in perspective / make them come alive for the Bible reader. Even though I am not "tuned in" to geography, this book shows me where Old Testament and New Testament events occurred, what the places were named years ago, and what the places are now named. A rather short book of 16 actual map pages (with additional information), this book does help the Bible reader gain a better understanding of the world in Biblical times as well as aid in understanding how those long-ago events and places relate to Bible prophecy and what is going on in our world now. I purchased this book along with Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps, and Time Lines. I recommend both books. In fact, I have purchased several more copies of each book to give as gifts!

4 out of 5 stars What you get is nice, wish there was more.......2006-08-18

This book is perfect for any teacher or homeschooler to show students a comparison between a few views of the Middle East regions during Bible times and present day country lines. However, you don't get very much for your money. The book retails for about $20 new and for this you get 5 pages of political-style maps with plastic overlays for present day and a couple for times in between. I had just hoped for more than 16 pages for my money. On the positive side, "Then and Now Bible Maps" is good for quickly showing present day country lines with the use of plastic overlays, and for that reason, it's a very nice addition to your Bible Study library. It also has many interesting facts about both Old and New Testaments between the map pages. However, Hammond's "Atlas of the Bible Lands" is a nice supplement, and a better punch for your dollar, with about 40 pages of geographic-style maps(showing terrain) for about $9 new.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-30

I received the two Now Bible Maps way quicker than expected and they were just what I was looking for. I would do business with this seller again in a flash.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable read.......2007-02-12

The wonderful autobiography entitled, The Road From Coorain, written by Jill Ker Conway is a must-read! Her engaging and rich detail gives an enchanting description of the Australian life-style from a very unique perspective.
Beginning in the 1930's, young Jill Ker lived with her tightly-knit family on a ranch called Coorain, Australia. Isolated in the desert and located far from Sydney, Coorain, has created an unordinary life-style for not only Jill but for her two brothers, Barry and Bob. Maintaining the remote Coorain is the family's only way to ensure stability and in the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Ker; the significance of Coorain is considered more important than a formal education. Though, when the dreadful droughts of the arid terrain continue to spontaneously appear, life becomes awfully challenging and difficult for the Ker family. Suffering from famine because of the lack of crops and animals, Coorain becomes involved in a downward spiral. As a result, Jill as well as other family members, encounter the enormous struggle of overcoming the concept of death and sorrow. As Jill grows into a young woman, she faces unfortunate events that set her back, creating various obstacles as she journeys down the unpredictable road of life. Faced with challenges romantically, intellectually, and within the family ultimately affects her career and talents, though somehow Jill miraculously manages to succeed.
Choosing an academic career as a historian, Jill faced the constant struggle of chauvinism living as a young woman during the 1950's. Her passion and remarkable academic achievements clearly demonstrated her natural talent as a student. Unfortunately, the unfair privileges men had in contrast to women was a constant obstacle. Jill had potential and unlike some other women, had the possibility of attaining her high hopes and dreams. Her brilliance and intellectual capability distinguished her as an individual, though she was unfortunately not recognized with equality because she was woman. "But I received a blandly courteous letter thanking me for my interest. I was dumfounded. Milton and I had ranked first in our class and were to be awarded the University Medal jointly for our academic achievements. I could scarcely believe that my refusal was because I was a woman...I knew I was no more and no less intellectually aggressive than Milton and Rob. That left my sex and my appearance." Though Jill Ker faced multiple obstacles throughout her life, she clearly proves that hard work and perseverance is a powerful way to achieve one's goals.
This engaging autobiography is filled with compelling and descriptive prose. Beautifully written, Mrs. Conway eloquently yet succinctly expresses the many conflicts one can be presented in life. Given her natural gravitation towards the subject of history, she enlightens the reader with interesting historical backgrounds of the many places she has traveled. Her simplistic, yet thought-provoking perspectives maintain one's fascination throughout the course of the book. Every moment I spend reading it was enjoyable. Mrs. Conway's, informative yet concise style of writing kept me actively involved. Her marvelously written descriptions, gave me an excellent understanding of the rural Australian life-style: "On the western side the mountains' gentler hills sloped down to rolling countryside; valleys covered with rich black soil sheltered streams winding westward. The gentle slopes rising from each watercourse were crowned with orchards in blossom, while below the contoured patterns of spring crops burst in brilliant green from the dark earth. I liked looking at this scenery with the dew still on it, well before the heat of the day." This autobiography filled with endless drama, love, and the hardships of life, is a definite must-read!

4 out of 5 stars no title.......2005-11-19

I related to and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Conway's descriptions of Australia are beautiful. She has written a follow-up book which I would like to read also. And on second reading, I feel more and more that perhaps her mother had some chemical imbalance, because she changed so drastically. Either that, or her repressed emotions after the deaths of her husband and her oldest son in the space of five years, led her to the bitter old woman she became.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice - The Road from Coorain.......2005-09-22

I'd recommend the The Road from Coorain anytime. I thought Jill Ker Conway's description of Australia was wonderfully descriptive. I felt I was there as she described her life in the bush as well as the city. Her ability to convey her feelings and her understanding of her situation growing up in a less than idealic life came through the pages as each situation developed. The book left me admiring her strength of character and understanding.

Unlike a book I recently read about the life a a political figure, I found Jill was able to touch on the emotion and struggle that life had dealt her and potray an understanding of the impact on her life. Definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this one and loved Sujoya Roy's novel too.......2005-09-07

If you enjoyed this book, try For Ganesh: Remover of Obstacles, by Sujoya Roy. Both books tell compelling stories of coming of age of trailblazing women who came to the U.S. from other countries to pursue education. Ker Conway brought her Australian experience; Roy's heroine brought Hindu and India culture. Both have contributed significantly to our world.

4 out of 5 stars A enjoyable read.......2004-12-01

Despite the fact that this felt long for just one volume of an autobiography, I liked it.

And no, I am a male and I still didn't think she was being a sexist in pointing out discrimination. She let the story speak for itself.

Book Description

The publication of The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road in 1972 marked the birth of the "new military history", which emphasized military organization--mobilization, pay, supply, morale and, above all, logistics--rather than military "events" such as sieges and battles. Constantly cited since its first publication in English (with translations into Spanish and Dutch), this revised updated second edition includes new sources and references but otherwise remains faithful to the original edition. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spain at War.......2006-02-06

This is an internationally-renowned study of Spain's Flanders Army during the 80 year effort to suppress the Dutch Revolt. And justly famous it is too - due to the depth and care with which the anaysis is done, as Parker covers all the logistical problems encountered by early modern Spain, inlcuding finance, supply, recruitment, morale - pretty much everything you would need to know about the difficulties of military organisation in the period.

As such, the book opens a window on the problems mounting any type of large-scale operation by the early modern state: far from being a modern professional fighting force the Flanders Army was a collection of nationalities with which the Spanish government more often than not had to coax or encourage to fight on its behalf - a task complicated by the distance of the Netherlands from Spain and by the constant financial strains faced by the Spanish treasury.

Given such problems, it was a considerable achievement to keep the struggle going for so long, especially bearing in mind other challenges faced by the Spanish Empire, and it does give a lesson on how difficult it was (and remains) to maintain an effective military presence in a country far distant from home and whose inhabitants do not wish you to be there. A lesson which it seems is repeatedly forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars The last hurrah before Rocroi.......2002-06-13

This is one of those magnificent books for the specialist that stay below the radar of a general readership in History. The short narrative of the attack on the fortress of Maastricht is the stuff of martial legends, and worth the price of the book. G. Parker has become the foremost historian in English of Spain in 16th & 17th Century and specifically of the 30 Years War. This splendid monograph is the gold on the background of the Tercio's banners.

Book Description

Mama and Papa agree that eggs for breakfast would be nice, but they’re too busy to go to the store. So they decide that Hetty is old enough to go by herself. Although she practices walking smoothly up the hill so she won’t break the precious eggs, she can’t help running all the way down. Young readers will hold their breath as Hetty tries her very best to get those eggs home safely. “The story is remarkable for its evocative imagery, and the loving interchange between the characters sets a charming tone. The words are perfectly complemented by Lewis’s dazzling, impressionistic watercolors that show the joyous power of love and depict a warmly supportive world in which Hetty ventures forth toward independence. A fine book that speaks straight to the heart.”--Booklist

I am a third grade teacher and I use this book to help teach writing. When I read the book to my students, I ask them to look for how the author used certain crafts. This book contains many teachable elements.

Hetty is a well-developed character. Students who have failed at a task despite their best efforts can identify with Hetty. The realistic watercolor illustrations enhance the text and show the emotions that Hetty is feeling. This well-paced story gives an accurate depiction of life in the country. The onomatopoeia used in the story helps the reader to visualize the setting and Hetty's actions.

This was a very good book. This story shows a young girl who is given the responsibility of going to the store alone. When she makes a mistake she is afraid to go home. The story showed how the young girl corrected her mistake. It also showed loving parents who were understanding and supportive. This was a great family story. The girl learns about responsibility. The illustrations were done in watercolors and are beautiful.

This is a great map of the city on water resistance paper. Will be with us while spending time in Venice. Have marked on it the location of items we wish to visit. We also have the Rome Rough Guide Map that we are taking on our trip.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect in a city where a map is a must-have!.......2007-01-17

This was a great map! If you want to go anywhere in Venice other than the Rialto bridge or St. mark's square, you will need a map. I put this map through hell, folding it every which way and even dropping it in a rain puddle - oops :) the map stood up to my abuse perfectly and was great for getting us around. we didn't have to find the TI to get a map, and i liked it way better than the nice map our hotel gave us. I highly recommend this map and will use others when we travel!

5 out of 5 stars This was my 1st Rough Guide Map and IT WAS AWESOME!.......2007-01-06

I can't even count how many times we used it on our trip to Venice, because Venice is one of those cities that once you go off the main streets, you will get lost without a map.

I love that it's rip-proof and water-proof, because I've used other maps and hate when they get worn from folding and un-folding. And since we'll be going to Berlin soon, I ordered the Rough Guide Berlin Map.

It had every street in Venice on it, which when you're navigating your way back to a main street or canal it totally helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Venice guide.......2006-11-10

The book filled in and added some supplemental information. The book was not used as much as planned as sufficient information was also available via the internet and the local residents.

5 out of 5 stars I love Rough Guide maps and the Venice map is no exception.......2006-05-13

I spent six days in Venice in April of 2006. After using the
excellent Rough Guide map of Barcelona, I purchase Rough Guide
maps when ever they are published for my destination. What I love
about these maps is that they are complete, accurate and very
tough. You can carry them around in your pocket, bend them and
sweat on them and they still remain as usable as ever.

You cannot get lost in Venice in the sense that you don't know
how to get back to somewhere familiar because there is always
a waterbus stop nearby that you can take to some place you know.
But the twisty pedestrian streets can be very confusing, ending
in canals, so it can be difficult to get from place to place
or to find a place you want to go to. For this you want the
Rough Guide map. I walked all over Venice, including some off
the beaten track areas where I saw very few tourists.

In summary: for Venice my advice is get a wasterbus pass for the
days you are in Venice and get the Rough Guide map. Oh, and
unless you like crowds and higher costs, don't stay in San Marco.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all ages..........2007-08-15

My son received this book as a gift for his first birthday. He loves it (and he has no clue who John Denver is)! We've read/sang it a hundred + times. He loves looking at the illustrations, as do I. My husband & I graduated from WVU, so this song is near & dear to our hearts. We hope to make a little Mountaineer out of our son too....this is a good start.

5 out of 5 stars Another great John Denver/Christopher Canyon work!.......2007-06-26

A great song with amazing illustrations. All the pictures look like quilt pieces. This song is timeless and kids love it. I've got kindergarteners who can belt this out and they never get tired of reading/singing it over and over. Very well done. Can't wait for more John Denver songs to come out.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-05-25

John Denver's music paints a beautiful picture in your mind, but this book brings it to life even more! Book is very animated---almost seems like the pictures move as the vehicles go up and down the rolling hill. Great quilted-look art that covers almost every space in this book. LOTS of things going on (you could look at this book all day long and still find something new the next day) Well worth the money!!! Get is for all your John Denver fans :)

5 out of 5 stars It took me home.......2006-11-03

I thought the book was adorable and will preserve John Denver's song for future generations. I have introduced his music to my young nieces and nephews. They know who he is now just by the sound of his music. Thanks for the latest addition to my library and the John Denver childrens collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Mountaineer Fans!.......2006-11-02

We have 3 preschool children and they love it. We share the book with their preschool class on game days and the kids have so much fun singing and dancing! Go...Mountaineers. Sunshine on my shoulders is a great book/cd too.

2 out of 5 stars Not that much detail.......2007-05-29

When I bought this product, other reviews led me to believe this would be a very dtailed map. It's not. We bought the Ordinance Survey Atlas. (65 pages of maps, spiral bound) Even that didn't have the level of detail needed to find some of the more obscure historic markers in the Dingle peninsula for instance. You won't get lost with the Rough Guide map, you won't necessarily be able to find all the sites of interest.

4 out of 5 stars Rough Guide.......2007-01-10

Although I haven't used this map yet for our trip to Ireland it looks like it would be a very good map to have while driving in Ireland.

2 out of 5 stars two sided map.......2007-01-01

The map appears to be durable and has details.

But, the thing that I had difficulty with since only half of the country appears on either surface is there is no contiguous edge.

Trying to get distances (or directions) across the map boundry is needlessly complicated. Coming up from the south to the upper map edge and trying to continue to the north of the country means a)noting the horizontal coordinate at point of interest, b) rotating to the right and c)then looking for your coordinate at your point of crossing which is now at the bottom of the map. Far easier would have been to have the upper surface of the bottom half match up with the lower surface of the top map at the edge. Accessed by rotating top to bottom. Flip back and forth to try alternative routes. Horizontal position doesn't move.

Is this the first map that Rough has ever done?

Disappointed,

EEB

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible!.......2006-12-01

We just returned from a two-week trip to Ireland, and this map was our constant companion. It survived rain, food spills and mud and helped us find our way all around the rural roads. It's the perfect size and scale; manageable, but including all the country roads and even some of the grassy lanes. Individual city steeet maps are not included. Even so, don't go to Ireland without this map!

5 out of 5 stars The Rough Guide to Ireland Map (Rough Guide Country/Region Map).......2006-11-10

This map was a wonderful addition to our trip. It gave enough detail on the back roads of Ireland that allowed us to find the most amazing places. Please us this map for the untraveled roads.

    Book Description

The Worthams and Hammonds are as close as two families could be, sharing almost everything on their Depression-era Illinois farms. So when a raging fire breaks out and threatens to destroy the Hammond farm, both families are affected by the tragedy. But how did the fire start? Several of the kids know the truth, but no one is talking. As the families try to overcome aching loss, misplaced blame, troubled relationships, and an upsetting secret, they once again find themselves clinging desperately to their trust in God. In this compelling tale of faith, hardship, and community, acclaimed author Leisha Kelly continues the much-loved story of the Wortham family, who with courage and determination discover the power of forgiveness to restore and heal.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Secret .......2007-03-30

After the fire almost destroyed all they had, the Hammonds and the Worthams pulled through with the help pf each other. At night a fire broke out at the Hammond's farm. The Samuel and Robert Wortham rushed to help out. In an attempt to save his animals, one of the Hammond boys ran into the barn. Samuel ran in after him and managed to save his life, but not with out almost killing himself. After managing to put the fire out the whole family of Hammonds plus the others went over to the Wortham's house to house for the night. Rorey Hammond, who actually started the fire with her not supposed to be boyfriend by knocking over a lantern while dancing, blamed Franky, her older brother who wasn't very bright, because her boyfriend, Lester Turrey, said to. As a result, everyone believed Rorey until Sarah told the family about Rorey's secret plans with Lester Turrey. Meanwhile, Samuel wasn't getting better because he suffered from a head concussion, a huge gash in his foot, and possibly broken ribs. In the end everything works for the good and Samuel is fun in no time and the Hammond family pulled together even closer. Rorey's Secret was an exceptional book and worth the read.

On reason why this book was so good was because it was very emotional. Some examples from the book are when, one, Franky's dad always got mad at him for no reason and would punish him unfairly and yell at him constantly. Two, Sarah yelled at Rorey until she confessed it was her that started the fire. This was emotional because Sarah and Rorey had been friends for seven years and know Sarah had to set things straight. Three, in the end of the book Samuel's mother, who had a bad reputation of being a drunk, came to visit the family for the first time.

Another reason was because the book was full of suspense. One example was when Samuel ran into the barn and came out unconscious and Julia Wortham, his wife, was extremely worried. Another was when Rorey miss treated her brother, Franky, after he followed her to one of her meetings with Lester by placing the blame on him for the fire. The last example was when Rorey and Mr. Hammond didn't talk to or come over to the Wortham's even though all his kids were there.

The last reason why this book was so good was because it had interesting characters that told the story from their point of view. One of those characters was Julia Wortham. She was a worried wife and a good hostest. In the book the thing that makes the most interesting was when had over 20 people at her house and they all need special attention. She managed to see to it all but she got next to nothing in hours of sleep and got up the next day ready to the same thing. The other character was Sarah Wortham, Julia's daughter. She was the only one besides her mom who believed him when he said he didn't start the fire, Because Sarah had inside information, she was the one who figured out that Rorey started the fire. The last character is Franky Hammond; the kid who everyone believed started the fire. He was a boy who dropped out of school on account of that he had trouble reading and doing math and other things. He worked with Samuel and was taught by Julia, who was like his second mother. Because he had the learning disability, everyone didn't like him and blamed all their trouble on him.

The most important reason why I liked this book was because it was very moving. It was moving to the fact that God could pull all of them through something like that and end in a good note. One reason why was so moving was because everyone had already been through one crisis and hadn't completely gotten through it when they had the fire. Another reason was because Samuel's mother came back to apologize for the way she acted from when he was little and turned her life to the Lord. I recommend this book in the highest regards.

5 out of 5 stars Love Leisha Kelly's style of writing.......2007-03-18

It is not often that I write a review but Ms Kelly's books are such a comfortable read. I love her style and rarely see it in other books. I found her quite by accident in a used book store. After reading the book I quickly went to [...] and ordered all of her books. I am just about to begin my last one "Rachel's Prayers". None has been anything but a wonderful read. Following the Wortham's & Hammond's families has been interesting. Watching the kids grow older in each book, following them through many trials and tribulations. Ms Kelly has a great way of allowing us to see into their lives and how they deal with life in general. Julia and Samuel are wonderful people and she makes them come alive for the reader. When a writer has that ability, they have my interest. I look forward to many more wonderful books from Ms Kelly.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Prayer.......2007-03-08

This story demonstrates how important it is to talk to someone about your hurts. By keeping the hurt inside, Rorey hurt herself more than anyone. But those who loved her kept praying for her and trying to encourage her and guiding her in the right direction. It also shows the power of prayer. And love shows throughout this story. I loved this entire series and would love to see more of them. This is a must for my church library, which is where I put it.

2 out of 5 stars I expected so much more..........2006-10-03

after really enjoying the first three books in this series, I expected more than this terribly insipid work. It seemed rushed, poorly thought out and I was extremely disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Great read.......2006-08-10
