UML 2.0 Internals.......2007-01-06
I found interesting the UML 2.0 internals (meta-models) discussions along with the application of real-time systems design concepts. Also, the ROPES process, as described in this book, is one of the most comprehensive processes aligned with the model-driven architecture (MDA) view of software design and development. In the software industry there is a variety of perspectives, methods and tools for software design, a working knowledge from those (as many as you can) assists to the professional software designer in her daily job.
This book makes an excellent presentation of one of those current software design perspectives.
Good Book.... needs some improvements too........2005-02-06
Focus on State diagrams is excellent. Chapter 1 is redundant. Choice of Examples is good but the examples could have been more simpler. Coherency is missing when the same example is discussed in multiple chapters. It would have been better if different examples are used to explain concepts in different chapters. An must buy book for those who use the related tools.

Book Description
The second edition of this monograph provides a systematic treatment of the design of modern hard disk drive servo systems updated with the latest research results to reflect recent improvements in spindle speed and bit density and other changes in this fast-moving field. In particular, it focuses on the applications of some newly developed results in control theory, i.e., robust and perfect tracking control and composite non-linear feedback control which are suitable for track following and seeking respectively. Emphasis is placed on hard disk drive servo systems with single- or dual-stage actuation using a voice-coil-motor actuator enhanced in the latter case by the addition of a micro-actuator providing faster responses and therefore higher bandwidth in track following. Other issues such as modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives, disturbance rejection and resonance compensation are also addressed.
The techniques and applications involved include:
- time- and frequency domain methods for system identification;
- physical effect approaches for parameter identification;
- linear systems tools;
- linear control techniques (PID,

H-infinity, and other robust control methods);
- classical nonlinear control techniques (time-optimal, proximate time-optimal, and mode switching control);
- composite nonlinear feedback (CNF) control;
- complete single- and dual-stage hard disk drive servo systems;
- time- and frequency domain properties of hard disk drive servo systems;
- design of piezoelectric actuator systems;
- modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives.

This book is about mining data streams (or data stream mining). Its title is not very accurate but if you see its TOC you will easily understand.
It covers the main areas of data stream mining and is accurate and informative.
Recommended if you are interested in data streams or data stream mining or mining data streams.
PS. There are some small typos at the first 30 pages of the book.

An excellent overview of all areas of DSL engineering and deployment. The last section with it's photo tour of the telephone "plant" is unique and especially informative.

These guys wrote the book on DSL by creating the products, standards, processes, and applications for broadband in the copper loop. As active participants in the DSL Forum and other standards bodies, Starr, Sorbara, Cioffi, and Silverman have been there, done that. They know their stuff, and it shows in this detailed work on the state of the art of DSL in 2003. While not being shameful to get down into the nitty gritty of "Iterative Water-Filling" or "Duplex clear-down sequences", there is good coverage of the business side of DSL and simple questions like "What is Voice over DSL?" For marketers like me, there are great pictures and diagrams throughout the book about all of the stuff they are talking about! Overall, there's something in here for everyone, just don't feel bad if there's a section or twenty that you don't understand -- these guys are the geniuses who thought it all up!

Cioffi of Stanford developed much of the original technology, Sorbara and Starr have led the industry's key technical committee, and Silverman's been a leader in the DSL Forum. Data Mining in Finance presents a comprehensive overview of major algorithmic approaches to predictive data mining, including statistical, neural networks, ruled-based, decision-tree, and fuzzy-logic methods, and then examines the suitability of these approaches to financial data mining. The book focuses specifically on relational data mining (RDM), which is a learning method able to learn more expressive rules than other symbolic approaches. RDM is thus better suited for financial mining, because it is able to make greater use of underlying domain knowledge. Relational data mining also has a better ability to explain the discovered rules - an ability critical for avoiding spurious patterns which inevitably arise when the number of variables examined is very large. The earlier algorithms for relational data mining, also known as inductive logic programming (ILP), suffer from a relative computational inefficiency and have rather limited tools for processing numerical data. Data Mining in Finance introduces a new approach, combining relational data mining with the analysis of statistical significance of discovered rules. This reduces the search space and speeds up the algorithms. The book also presents interactive and fuzzy-logic tools for `mining' the knowledge from the experts, further reducing the search space. Data Mining in Finance contains a number of practical examples of forecasting S&P 500, exchange rates, stock directions, and rating stocks for portfolio, allowing interested readers to start building their own models. This book is an excellent reference for researchers and professionals in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, knowledge discovery, and applied mathematics.

An interesting book even if the focus on finance on data mining put the reader always at the border line with some very usual statistics techniques. Literature on ARIMA in finance is exponential for instance.
It will be interesting that the authors develop some examples of the cases on existing and major softwares from the market as Clem or SEM
To read if you need to fulfil some knowledge in finance statistic models more than in data mining in finance, for statistic some Sage papers will give you a more pragmatic over view and for data mining read Larose's books too.
Excellent book in terms outlined by its authors.......2002-06-30
This is one of the most informative books I've found on the subject of mathematical modeling of financial time series. The book is largely a review of the 'state of the art' and frequently expects the reader to be familiar with or willing to 'find and read' relevant articles, but we can all do that, can't we?
The book sequentially studies
1. Standard ARIMA (autoregressive models) which are closest to familiar linear regression techniques.
2. Neural nets and Bayesian trees (as a category called 'relational data mining' by the authors)
3. Fuzzy logic approaches (described as 'membership functions'. Membership functions are defined in terms of linguistic practice, whatever that is.).
In this way, the authors develop a seemingly comprehensive outline of the field, describing fields of study in terms of increasing abstraction. Of the three, I found the fuzzy logic discussion the most interesting.
I have to express some reservations regarding the perspective taken by the authors. Their view is that of the Newtonian physicist observing the interactions of bodies entirely independent of the viewer. At no point do the authors examine the implication of 'self participation' in the marketplace. For example, what happens to probability distribution 'X' when a trading entity uses the probability distribution 'X' to take a significant position in a security? If this seems interesting, you might try looking at "Theory of Financial Risks: From Statistical Physics to Risk Management", by Bouchaud or "An Introduction to Econophysics: Correlations and Complexity in Finance" by Mantegna and Stanley.
It is a very informative book.......2001-10-18
It is a very informative book with all major data mining methods and their comparisons compressed into 300 pages. Therefore, a significant part of the book is not leisurely reading. This is typical for the books from Kluwer Academic Publishers. One has to be ready to spend enough time to go through algorithms' details, pseudo code and comparisons of algorithms to get a serious benefit for the design of one's own model.
For instance, understanding the power of first-order if -then rules over the decision trees gained from the book can significantly change and improve design.

I haven't gotten this game guide yet, but I saw it in borders and fell in love with it! Don't look for lame excuses for free guides on the internet! There aren't any! I've looked everywhere. One thing though, You can get Jirachi from Pokemon Channel but it doesn't say in here! don't be a trainer without this!
