I couldn't quite understand this book maybe because it was too dark. Maybe someday down the road I will re-read this book again and get some understanding out of it but as for today I cannot make heads or tails of it.
A little book with a big message.......2007-06-27
Most reference books are large. This one, even with all of the information packed inside, is instead, rather small. In doing the work of owning your own shadow, "what is the purpose of my life?" is a question that can be discovered. Paired with Johnson's "Innerwork," readers can learn to be in touch with and find meaning in the deeper regions of the psyche. To be able to map out a life for oneself amidst the rushing pace and excrement of the sewer that can pass for as life can offer hope to readers who want more as we begin excavating the gold in our own shadows.

I found this book over simplistic. I don't know who Robert Johnson is writing for but from this book I would guess it was for those with learning difficulties. He repeats his points over and over again, basically I think the actual content of this book could be covered in a 5 pages rather than 118. I guess he does have to spread out the plugs he gives for his other books.
Promotes Acceptance, a Bit Too Long.......2007-06-07
I liked the principle that when I grow fast or experience great excitement, some part of me may experience a rebound. It gave a context for looking more fully at some of my patterns. However, the more I live in acceptance of whatever I experience without making an identify for myself out of it, the less this applies. And, the "rebound" is not an unavoidable part of anything good.
A simple and basic explanation of the shadow.......2006-12-01
This book is a fairly light read at 118 pages and serves as a good general outline of the concept of shadow. The brevity of it is one of its strengths because you finish it quickly and are not intimidated to re-read it if you felt like you missed something. I found myself going back to fill in the gaps of my preliminary reading and caught many more missed insights than I had expected. Brief, but chocked full of gold.

Murphy teach us the basics, once again........2007-01-11
Murphy's book is a comprehensive review of Voisin Grass Productivity book complemented with his own experience in Vermont.
I read it and found it very helpful in my search for milk production productivity and profits in my dairy farm in the Coffee area of Colombia.
I am still looking for books or experiences with Voisin rational grazing in the Tropics, where we use mainly grass to feed our cows outside and have followed feed companies advise on supplementing grains and feedstuffs, without questioning prices of grass, milk, corn silage and supplemental feeds.
If Murphy worked with the Voisin system in Brasil it would be great to have his experience written in a second book for Latin America.

Andre Voisin, a French farmer, biologist and chemist--as well as a teacher at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine in Paris, designed a system that he calls "rational grazing" (as opposed to the generic term "rotational grazing"). Loved this book - although I have only one horse and can not do some of the intensive grazing techniques, I do have a better understanding about maintaining the pastures. This has been very useful and will enable me to get together with the neigbors and do several horses on the pastures in rotation. We will all have more edible forage for the horses.

I'm reading this book for the third time - there's just too much info to digest in one reading. We are just starting with cattle and are using this book as our bible. It not only explains the many advantages of raising animals using managment intensive grazing (more profit, environmentally friendly, humane, better nutrition, ease of animal handling), it goes into great detail on HOW to do it. My husband used the chapter on fencing to select products that have received many positive comments from visitors to the farm. I especially enjoyed reading about pasture plant diversity and how cattle "harvest" it. Our cattle look (and taste) great, much to the shock of long-time cattle farmers in our community who are surprised that two greenhorns like us can do so well. We attribute our success to this book and highly recommend it.

This book is fantastic. I have started to use it with my children to help them be more successful in school. The concepts on learning are unbelievable - where was this stuff when I was growing up? Well worth the cost from the information you gain on how to learn more efficiently. Can't wait to buy his book on memory.
This book helped me pass a very tough exam.......2007-03-15
In the State of Texas, there is a comprehensive exam to become a certified school teacher. It's in two parts, given at different times of the semester.
Thanks to Buzan's ideas, I managed to pass both parts of the exam the first time. I used mind maps, memorization techniques he presented and in general, studied extensively. To be sure, I modified his techniques to fit my own style, but it worked. Mind mapping and mnemonics make good partners!
As with many other study techniques, it is still a lot of work and requires effort, and sometimes you'll have to make time to study when you'd rather do something else. In other words, you'll still need self discipline. But in my opininon, it makes the time studying a lot more fun.
Your mind maps don't have to be great works of art -- and they can be revised -- in fact, the process will help you remember better.
It's possible to do well and pass -- even ace -- tests without these techniques. But if you want something that will make the process more fun and probably more efficient, then this is the book for you.
Misinform your mind.......2005-04-14
Tony Buzan is not an expert in brain science, nor is he an originator. This is evident in the "facts" he gives to explain how the brain/mind works. The info given is old pseudoscience about the mind, adapted from the extreme views of Sperry, amongst other speculative writers of the 1970s. But I know why Tony Buzan hasn't updated the information to include all the studies that show; mind mapping does not work to any significant level, it is not adopted to any significant level by students, it does not balance the brain any more than other types of note making, and it certainly does not make you smarter.
The reason for this persistent adherence to old and debunked pseudoscience, is that it sells books. Some common mind myths include; You use less than 1% of your brain, the brain is seperated into specific left/right skills, creativity can be increased easily using simple techniques, and just imagining something will bring it to pass in reality. These have all been debunked in the latter part of the 1970s.
The techniques given in the book are extremely limited in comparison with the strategies given in other less glitzy study method/ learning books. That is good enough reason not to buy the book. But the principles given that dictate the use of techniques are so nonsensical compared to more recent science, that they can only be thought of as sales pitch, or an effort to sell other books by the same author.
Mind mapping is a very feable technique compared to other graphic organizers (eg the concept map). Speed reading is so misleading that it tends to result in very successful deception litigation. They have both been debunked on several occasions.
Find a study method book that doesn't just stroke the ego. Probably any book on study techniques will give better methods without setting you up for anticlimax.

I must echo the sentiments of an earlier reviewer. I was a returning college student in my late twenties. I had to take several remedial courses just to bring myself up to speed in math and English. Between the techniques in this book (mainly Mind Mapping), meditation and subliminal memory tapes (the last two are not in this book) I finished my second semester with three A's and two B's. Also, I made the Deans list.
The section on speed-reading was so great; College was the first time in my entire life that I could read so fast I actually had time to go over my answers and check for any possible errors. I rarely found any.
If you are in a SUPER HURRY to improve your memory for testing, I suggest skipping to the Mind Map section. However, you really should go back when you have more time and read the WHOLE BOOK!!!
Sime to read. Useful techniques to help you study better ..........2004-12-23
I bought this book at a local discount book store. The title and the colorful front-cover seemed interesting, so I spent the amount.
The book is very easy to read. It also has a good set of useful techniques that most people can use when they are studying (or maybe even when they are thinking). I am still practicing these techniques and cannot say for sure whether they work (especially the mind-mapping technique). But, overall, I think, every student should learn the techniques from this book before jumping headlong into studying subjects like Physics/Chem/Bio/Math/etc.
Good book! Read it and practice the techniques.

Good but not current enough for me........2007-07-13
I am taking a medication that isn't BRAND new to the market but isn't by any means OLD either. It has been released within the last 4 years. I was hoping it would be in this book as I am also taking herbal supplements, but it wasn't. There were other drugs that were supposed to be for the same conditions, but since they are different chemicals the interactions were potentially different, so I didn't find this helpful.
That said, there are plenty of maintstream medications like antibiotics, etc. included in this book so it might be helpful to some folks. I just think that drugs, like computers, change so quickly that books like this can't cover everything. I am on the fence with my recommendation on this one.

I purchased this book as I have fibromyalgia and wanted to try some alternative therapies, and ensure their safety with my prescription medications. I feel that it is an excellent guide for that, and actually is quite useful as a simplified prescription medication guide. It is easy to use, easy to understand, and does a great job of listing and describing medication/herbal/vitamin/supplement interactions. I purchased one for my parents, and my sister purchased one as well. Very useful book if you take any medications and any other type of supplement.
Includes just about every medication available, with the exception of those released after its publication.

Book is 2006, yet doesn't list some of the RX's I take. Hard to use, also. Some RX's are only listed generically, so you need a computer to check the brand name first.
Straightforward and Comprehensive.......2004-10-20
The book is large but set out in a series of straightforward sections: the first one on drugs themselves (under generic names - useful if you're British !) with each entry having a general paragraph on the drug (or group of drugs) but then goes onto talk of how it/they interact with herbs and vitamins whether helpful and unhelpful interactions.
There is then a large section on the vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements simply showing which drugs they interact with. The final two sections appear to be for medical professionals only as one is listing the drugs by pharmacist classification and one is a 'book/article source listing' giving the medical sources about each of the drugs.
I'd never realised it wasn't a good idea to take a codeine pain killer compound with tea before - the tannins inhibit the uptake of the drug ! Very interesting.

Great Alternative to Dangerous Drugs with Side Effects.......2007-03-14
This is a terrific book with excellent alternatives to overly prescribed drugs. Let's face it. If you go to your doctor with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, etc., you are going to leave the office with a drug that has multiple side effects. Not only that, taking several different drugs each day can lead to numerous dangerous interactions that your doctor can't possibly calculate. This book offers safe alternatives with impressive results similar to taking a drug, but without the liver and kidney damage, headaches, nausea, etc.

You must be kidding me "Doctor". I think Doctor Dre has more "doctor" cred than you. Unbelievable what people will do these days. Read his bio. He has a phony degree from a phony university. If he presented his Pacific Ph.D in a government job he would be risking arrest. In fact they don't even have a doctoral program anymore because they got nailed on it. Look it up. Beware of someone who claims they are a doctor when they are not. Read his bio, go look up Pacific Western University.

I was looking for an alternative to the prescriptions I had been taking because of the side effects. This book gave me guidance as to what direction to take. Dr. Mindell is a wonderful writer and I have taken his vitamins and am now relying on his knowledge to replace prescriptions with natural remedies.

The aphorism, the cure is worse than the disease, is an apropos motto for "Over Dose." Drug company policies rake in billions while harming the very patients they are meant to help. Dr. Jay S. Cohen opens more cans of worms than a fisherman could hook in his lifetime. The evidence is horrifically overwhelming - America is being overmedicated.
Dr. Cohen is not anti-medication; he advocates the reasonable usage of these powerful meds. His mantra is "start low, go slow." The well researched (53 pages of references) is adept at uncovering the shortcomings of the pharmaceutical companies and their adverse effects on the public - 46% of Americans take at least one prescription daily. Cohen shows how the drug companies' one-size-fits-all dosage is literally killing people. Nearly 300 people die daily due to a medication reaction. The dire facts keep on coming. The author's case against the drug companies is convincing.
Dr. Cohen's precise writing is somber. But the real sad part of this tragedy is how avoidable it can be. Dr. Cohen is equally effective in offering realistic solutions. A Pharmacist has an "Aha Moment!".......2003-12-16
I began working in pharmacy in the late 1960's. I helped dispense drugs at a retail drugstore in my home town and I did the same in the largest hospital in Chicago. I kept it up at another hospital and then started "doing" it on my own when I opened my retail store in 1983. I read the manufacturers' package inserts and I followed the prescriptions as they were ordered - and I noticed that many people had problems with the "recommended" dose. Sometimes they got used to the dose and sometimes it had to be changed. In any event, the recommended dose was not always accurate accurate - it was often dangerously WRONG.
I don't know what I thought about all the problems with prescription drugs. I guess I just presumed the patients were overly sensitive, or just unlucky. I didn't often think too much about it - until I became aware of Dr. Jay Cohen and his "Case Against the Drug Companies." His shocking book is called "OVER DOSE" and it describes in good detail the dangers of relying on the manufacturers' package inserts to prescribe drugs.
This is an "eye opener" book and it angers me. How is it that we have this overriding desire to place the bottom line above decent care for health? There are some great things happening in medicine - all around the world. But I think that all the good can be quickly undone by hanging on to a misguided philosophy that insists that profits trump everything else. Its time for a change and Dr. Cohen is part of the changing process. I promise to do my part for change. One thing is to expose potential problems (like Dr. Cohen has done) and another is to encourage people to think about the issues (that's my goal). Please get a copy of this book. Read it and then think about what it really means. When we reach a critical mass changes will happen. You can bank on it! (pun intended)
Everyone should read this book!.......2003-01-17
Finally, someone has put into print an accurate and factual picture of what the drug manufacturing industry does to place profits way ahead of patient benefit and safety. Anyone who takes prescription medications should read this book. Maybe it gets a little too technical in spots for people not in the health professions, but there is plenty of excellent information and suggestions to make this a very valuable reference for consumer-oriented patients.
I am a doctoral-level clinical pharmacist, and I found myself in agreement with most all of what Dr. Cohen has written and recommended in this book. This should be required reading for every practicing physician, medical student, pharmacist, and nurse in the country. Medical schools should add this to their curriculum for all of our doctors-to-be to read before they take their pharmacology course and start their clinical training.
FDA and PMA Foibles Exposed.......2002-07-08
A valuable theme disclosing inadequate testing by the drug companies and woeful evaluations by the FDA of prescription drugs. The main thesis is well-taken: lower doses of many drugs could minimize side-effects, including death. Actually does not go far enough in exposing all the major drug classes that do not increase lifespan at all!

Compelling read , should be required reading for drug makers.......2002-03-04
...I was intrigued by Dr. Cohen's basic premise. The drug industry tries to make drug dosing easy for doctors, but what about the patient? The one size fits all.. dosing is not consumer centric, and in the new age of the informed drug consumer it is about time consumers got their correct dose. Dr. Cohen is... pro-drug treatment for many conditions. He wants to have drug makers offer information and pill sizes for lower dose use. Why should a 250 pound man and 100 pound grandmother get the same starting dose. Yet that is what pharmaceutical companies do in their starting dose recommended. This leads to greater side effects and reduces the use of medicines, says Dr.Cohen. Well-written and easy to understanfd Dr. Cohen raises new opportunities for consumer centric companies interested in making drugs that can be used with less side effects. With poor patient retention and compliance by patients drug companies should be doing what they can to make drug treatment more palatable. Clearly, reducing the over dosing is one way to get greater compliance.

After a long search and 3 PHP books later, I have finally found something that was perfectly structured and EASY TO UNDERSTAND. If you are looking to learn PHP fast, start with this book. 4 stars instead of 5 only because its a bit dated, though still an excelent foundation.

This book is a must have reference to PHP programming. It's a bit difficult to read, but it's great to have around. If you are an absoulte beginer looking to learn PHP, this isn't your book right away...wait a couple of months and then buy it.

Books on PHP are definately improving as time goes on. This is the best book I've seen so far for the beginner, and I definately wish I had it when I was started learning 3 years ago. A wide variety of functions were covered to get the novice familiar with how PHP works, giving them a good foundation to move onto more advanced books and/or tutorials.
I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that it failed to stress the importance of form related security (which should definately be taught from the beginning), as well as writing with registered_globals off (which is the default setting in PHP for 4.2 or later). Many beginners who follow this book may wonder why their scripts aren't working because of it.
Overall, though, I was very impressed with the layout of the example code, with plenty of pointers explaining what each part of the code is doing, as well as how easy it was to skim the text that came with it.

This sometimes surprising book presents principles that many managers will be able to apply immediately. Samuel B. Bacharach writes clearly and maintains his focus on a single cluster of ideas: His main points are that implementation is an essential part of leadership, momentum is an essential part of implementation, and as a leader, you can maintain momentum by focusing on its key elements, which he explains and illustrates. He includes examples from many disciplines and historical periods: his use of Lewis and Clark as leadership models was one of the book's pleasant surprises. However, Bacharach is better at describing common dilemmas than at solving them. Once he's persuaded you to balance "directive" and "facilitative" leadership, you still have the big challenge of figuring out how. Even though some of his concepts are not entirely new, we recommend this book to leaders who want to brush up on basic principles, and who appreciate seeing them refreshed and reframed.

I really enjoyed the follow-up to get them on your side. It was an outstanding piece of work that helped my organization transition into the seconds phase of a very important project. It was rough getting them on my side but it is extremely harder to keep them. This book focused on key fundametals that aid in that process.

I recently received Get Them on Your Side and Keep Them on Your Side as a gift and was quite delighted. As an entrepreneur who endeavors to start new businesses, I was indeed surprised how relevant and useful these two volumes are. Bacharach clearly understands what it takes to launch ideas and keep momentum going. I wish I had these books in my corner awhile ago, but I'll keep them on my shelf and rely on them as I manage my growing business. Who says academics can't write for practitioners?

"Keep Them on Your Side" is a terrific follow up to Sam Bacharach's "Get Them Your Side". Too many executives give short shrift to the difficult leadership and hard political work necessary to get things done. Where "Get Them on Your Side" highlights building coalitions to build support for your ideas and make things happen, "Keep Them on Your Side" shows you how to keep your coalition together, keep members motivated and moving toward your goal. As every leader knows, most projects die for lack of follow through. As someone who has taught about leadership and cultural change for 20 years, I highly recommend these books as must reading for every one who wants to be an effective leader in his/her organization - whether it is a corporation, union, non-profit, or a government agency.

It's an absolute must for everyone who wants to know how to take the skills they developed with Mr. Bacharach's first book to that next level. This book is filled with ideas on how to maintain the alliances you built and keep the momentum going right through to the successful conclusion of your project.
Both books are absolute gems and already read like classics in the field. You can't have a better guide through the political minefield of the business world than Mr. Bacharach.
