Book Description

For the generation coming of age in the years from 1987 to 1994, RIP magazine was every bit as crucial as Rolling Stone. Life on Planet Rock describes how Lonn Friend, the editor of RIP, became the Zelig-like chronicler of the biggest musical moments of that time—from introducing Guns N’ Roses (in nothing but a top hat, underwear, and cowboy boots) to sitting in during the making of Metallica’s Black Album. Life on Planet Rock provides revealing portraits of artists as varied as Kurt Cobain, Gene Simmons, Alice Cooper, Axl Rose, James Hetfield, Steven Tyler, and many more. Part oral history, part candid and humorous memoir, it is a wormhole back to a fast-moving time in music that saw tastes flash from new wave to hair metal to grunge, told as only someone who was there through it all could tell it.

5 out of 5 stars Pilgrim of Rock.......2007-09-13

Lonn's Life on Planet Rock: a sincere account of a time when the glamor of the eighties was unraveling, making way for a stripped down fledgling grunge. Frank, unsparing tales of his personal relationships with the artists themselves, and a few porn innovators, allows you to wander comfortably through a chaos riddled era almost as if you were there. A tour of the times, lead by the RIP editor and rock pilgrim, Lonn Friend with honesty, eloquence and an endless knowledge of rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Life on Planet Rock is Great.......2007-05-22

myspace advertised a book called "Life on Planet Rock" written by RIP magazine bigwig Lonn Friend. If you are a fan of music, with emphesis on 80's metal, go no further. This book is a timelined bible for those of us who lived during the great moments in metal and rock and roll. His stories roll in exact time with the memories we had as normal rock and roll lovers, EXCEPT he gives you the feeling of actually being there and throws in tons of extras we never knew about. This book is a must read simply because Lonn Friend's love of music and gentle expression of said love is an experience that im finding so hard to express in my own words. GO OUT AND BUY (NOT BORROW) THIS BOOK NOW !!!

3 out of 5 stars Rock in A Hard Place.......2007-04-15

I picked up this book expecting full-on rock stories with behind the scenes and great tales of rock excess as in the pages of RIP and Lonn's other ventures. The book has great rock content and stories (i.e. Aerosmith, Metallica, Bon Jovi), but also a large part of the book is about Lonn's "rise and fall" within the music industry, and his settling the score and getting on with his personal life.

3 out of 5 stars average.......2007-03-27

I found this book to be a little slow and boring. There were some interesting stories.I enjoyed the Bon Jovi chapter since there is so little written about them. But mostly it was like reading a very long magazine article.Very basic nothing facinating.I kind of felt like either he was holding back or just didn't have much to say. I would suggest to borrow the book and then you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read!.......2007-03-09

"Life On Planet Rock" by Lonn Friend is a tremendous book written by a man who is not only an outstanding literay legend but also a passionate fan of the music he covered.

As the editor of RIP Magazine from 1987 - 1994, Lonn Friend and his staff took the readers, backstage and behind the scenes of some of the most monumental moments in the history of rock. Because of Lonn's credibility with the artists, RIP was given unprecedented access to the making of many of the era's monsterous albums such as Metallica's "Black Album" and Guns N' Roses' "Use Your Illusion". Each month the reader was allowed to slip into the shadows and find out what really happened on the road as Lonn was given exclusive access of some of the biggest tours in history including Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, and Bon Jovi. As a reader I lived vicariously through the words in RIP and I often found myself wondering what it was like to be that "fly on the wall".

In "Life On Planet Rock", Lonn Friend shares that "fly on the wall" view in a very personal way. Not only does he give further insight into the personal lives of the likes of Alice Cooper, Metallica and Aerosmith, but Lonn also conveys how many of the artists and events he covered affected his life and values. For years I devoured the monthly articles that graced the pages of RIP and now more than a decade later I have found myself more enthrawled than ever with each chapter of "Life On Planet Rock".

5 out of 5 stars The Bass Bible.......2007-09-25

This truely is a great bass tab book for a great album! Beginners to experienced players could do alot worse than learn from the basslines Duff McKagan plays on Appetite!

Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great tab book.......2005-02-25

All the songs from Appetite for Destruction, with detailed transcriptions, song notes and an introduction at the face of the book, lyrics, and more! I also bought THE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES OF SLASH, which was a breakdown of some of the songs from Appetite with a bonus CD. Both are recommendable but this is definitely more straightforward. If you want to learn Gn'R, start there. If you're already good at guitar, get this book. It's hard, and takes practice, but the songs are ALL great. Even Think About You is fun to play, and it's my least favorite song on Appetite.

5 out of 5 stars Appetite for Destruction .......2004-11-19

In Appetite for Destruction, Gene writes about how guns and roses emerged from an LA club that legends Van Halen, Motely Cure and poison, also emerged from. Gene gives an excellent point of view of how hard they had it when they first started. He continues to write about how even know they had numerous albums and concerts, the luck for the band, just kept on getting worse. From someone's head getting stumped in ar a mush pit at one of their concerts, to alcohol and drug overdoses.
It talks of how slash tried to over came his drug problems and how Axel had a huge control issue over the band. This band was created of friendship and ruined by greed, corruption, drugs and alcohol. It even tells you secrets of songs and stories of them. I would give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Appetite for Destruction : Bass Guitar.......2000-06-23

i thought ''Appetite for Destruction : Bass Guitar'' was reallya great transcription for bass guitar of a great album. i has musicand tab for all the songs. my favorite song is "Sweet Child of Mine" the bass line is modereratly easy and fun to play. i gave it a 5 because it is well written and easy to figure out

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The Book That Should Be Forgotten.......2007-01-11

This is possibly the worst book I've ever read. It reads like something a teenager would hand in for English class. There are many spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, duplication of sentences/quotes and places where Mr. Stenning just uses the wrong words. Mr. Stenning seems to think that asking questions is a writing style. Note to Mr. Stenning - That's the reason I'm reading the book, to find out the answers to the questions that you ask. I find it hard to believe that an editor even looked at this. The only solace is that there is some information in it for the hardcore fan, if you can endure the slop that Mr. Stenning passes for writing and sift through the "Axl can do no wrong" theme that pervades this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good thing it was cheap.......2006-06-11

I am a huge fan of Guns n Roses and Velvet Revolver and thought this would make a great read. But right at the beginning I could tell that the author has no writing skills whatsoever. He really needed to fire his editor because there were quite a few mispellings and grammatical errors, but that wasn't the biggest flaw with the book. Most of the information is taken from magazine interviews and the rest seems to be complete hearsay. It would have been nice for the author to actually talk to the bandmembers in length before devoting a whole book to them. I feel that it was unfair, mostly to Slash, Izzy, Steve and Duff.
He made Axl out to be some god, which he is far from being. It was the other guys who had the drug problem, not Axl. YEAH RIGHT!

Either way, the book is poorly written so try to buy it used or borrow someone else's if you really want to read it.

1 out of 5 stars Regurgitated facts; nothing new or original; too many typos!.......2006-06-10

I am a really big GNR fan and I have a large collection of biographies. When I heard about this one, naturally I had to buy a copy. I barely finished a fourth of this book due to the extremely large amount of typos and the fact that there is abosolutely nothing new in this material. I haven't read any other GNR book in at least two years, so I'm not a source of endless GNR trivia, but nearly every "fact" or "anecdote" in this book was something I remembered hearing from another source.

This book is extremely shoddily done; shame on the writer and the publisher! It was put out just to capitalize on the hype around Chinese Democracy (don't even get me started on the mud Axl is dragging the memory of GNR through), and the author/editor/publisher clearly had no concern for producing a high quality product.

Go read Mick Wall's book if you want unauthorized (but probably really true, just not that Axl wanted to hear it) material by an outstanding journalist.

1 out of 5 stars What A Rip-Off.......2006-04-01

I wasn't exactly expecting greatness from this book, but I still could not believe how poorly written and incoherent this thing was. Paul Stenning should get himself to a basic English composition class immediately -- while there have been other reviewers who have mentioned typos, the problems are far worse than that. In paragraph after paragraph there were long, rambling sentences that made no sense and could have been written better by a stoned teenager. Even worse, when the prose does make sense, it's because a huge amount of this "unauthorized" material is blatantly plagiarised word-for-word from articles previously published in magazines like Rolling Stone, Spin, and others, with no credit given to the actual reporters who did the real work of finding such information. I don't think the lawyers who work for such magazines would look on this practice very kindly. Don't waste your money on this garbage; you can find better (and more coherent) information simply by surfing the web for a couple hours. The above rating is one star; that's only because Amazon doesn't allow you to select no stars at all.

5 out of 5 stars guns n' roses the band time forgot.......2006-03-30

The band that time forgot is a bad name for this book. Guns n' Roses is a band that no one has forgotten about. How could you for get the band that had Riots rageing in St louis? How could you forget the band that wrote 'Coma' a song that is about drugs and overdoseing, then go and write 'November rain' which is about Axl's feelings for his girl friend that suddenly died! the answer is no way. this book tells the begining to the end of the guns'era. the mental and phisical abuse of Axl's stepfather in Lafayette IN. the drug problems of the hole band. and making the "perfict" album.
the strugles for axl to be the best was to his oun dismay. To read about this, and being a G'N'R' fan made it so relavent to see why the guns have gone there separet ways.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent!.......2007-09-02

Guns N' Roses Complete, Vol. 2 is a must buy for GNR fans and guitarists. This book contains 28 songs from M(Mama Kin)-Y(Your Crazy) including: "Mr. Brownstone" "My Michelle", "Night Train", "November Rain", "Paradise City" , "Patience", "Sweet Child O' Mine" and of course "Welcome to the Jungle".

As the title suggests, every guitar riff, arrangement, rhythm, lick, solo, and fill is fully transcribed, note-for-note, in music and TAB! From the timeless intro and solos of "Sweet Child O' Mine" to the wooing acoustics of "Patience", it's all here, fully transcribed to learn. The transcriptions themselves are of the best quality money can buy and include all of the guitars in each song, not just rhythm or lead. As a bonus, the lead vocals are also included and make following the music much easier. Basically, all your GNR needs are found here and in Volume 1. (By the way ,if you are debating, buy Volume 2 first because, by chance, most of GNR's hit-songs begin with M-Z--as listed above)

It is worthwhile to note that when I say 'perfect', I mean it subjectively. There are people out there you critique the book's accuracy. However, all of these arguments are inconsequential. For instance, I heard someone say that on the final two notes of "Mr. Brownstone's" signature riff, Slash uses a 1/2 bend instead of a hammer-on as the book denotes. To this and similar claims I respond with: Who Cares! They both sound the same, both give you the same pitch and sound, and you play it so quickly it really makes absolutely no difference. Most of the "Inaccuracies" claimed of this book are equally trivial, and depend on what each person perceives. To be fair to critics and any claims I have not refuted or heard I will compromise that % 99.99 of the book is accurate.

Now, while the transcriptions themselves are out of this world and need no further discussion, I have a word of caution. Be prepared to work hard for them! Despite the inclusion of the lyrics, it is very hard to follow the music at times (I can read music and still go through hell at times). And this is only made worse by the fact the pages are as crowded and hectic as the beaches of Normandy; any notation denoting a coda or repeat is easily lost in the jumble of rhythm slashes, fill and riff signalers, chords and other special notations. You will find that making sense of it all is a task in and of its self, and thus learning a new song can be annoying as you try to follow it all. I would be willing to pay more money for a thicker book if the authors would write out all the parts on the same staff all the time, instead of resorting to the short cuts they take.
For example: the book will often say "Play Riff A" over the staff, referring you to an obscure rhythm piece written out two pages back, which you now have to hunt down, recall, then flip back to the original page, figure out how it fits and play...etc. This and other similar little short-cuts are ANNOYING! Would it kill them to simply write-out bloody "Riff A" again where it is supposed to be played?

That said, if you can't read music (or read at all), this book will be very hard to follow. Yes, it includes TAB, but without the musical knowledge it will be hard to know what is going on. Also, for any would-be-Slashes-and-Izzys out there (including myself), none of these songs are quick and simple to learn, so if you are only a casual guitarist or fan, don't waste your time and money. You will need patience and skill to play what's in this book because, after all, this is a note-for-note transcription of Slash and Izzy's playing. If you are easily frustrated or bored, this book isn't for you, and you would be better off buying one of the more simply arranged books available on Amazon. But if you really want to rock-out just as GNR did for whatever reason, by all means BUY THIS BOOK! You will find yourself learning not only the songs, but tons of musical techniques and skills.

Guns N' Roses Complete, Vol. 2 is a fantastic buy if you are looking for the perfect guitar transcriptions of many GNRS songs. As long as you are willing to go through the long hours of practice and some frustrating layout issues, this book will rock you world with its priceless contents! (Conveniently priced under $20)

Finally I can learn the songs how they're supposed to be played. I've downloaded and printed so many different versions of tabs of some of the songs in this book and most of them just never sounded right. This is a great collection of songs, I have the tab book for use your illusions II and I really didn't want to go out and buy all of their other album tabs seperately. This was the perfect solution. Excellent collection.
Just don't expect to be playing these songs the day you get this book - Slash isn't human, some of this stuff is impossible.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2006-05-03

The book is good, but having the CD really helps. If you have ever wanted to learn to play GNR songs, get this book. This was the first tab book I ever purchased and I learned note for note how to play paradise city and sweet child o mine and the rest is history.

4 out of 5 stars Good tab book, BUT..........2005-02-25

...I can't help but think that slowing the tracks down on the CD would have made it easier. Also, Perrin doesn't spend much time explaining the actual promised "breakdown" of Slash's work - the full title of the book is THE TECHNIQUES OF SLASH: THE BEST OF GN'R, but the title seems to change throughout - sometimes it's a demonstration of Slash's techniques, sometimes it's just tabs of their best songs with little explanation.

For example, he notes the "power strumming" for Civil War, but doesn't give any advice on how to strum the opening, which is in my opinion the hardest part.

It's still a good book and very useful because it contains accurate transcriptions of the songs, and many of them are indeed their best. However I also bought a tab book for Appetite for Destruction - the only bonus here is a few Use Your Illusion tracks and a CD, because the "tutoring" they promise on the back cover isn't exactly very helpful.

Also, don't be fooled by the back cover - November Rain, Bad Obsession and various others that are listed are NOT transcribed; brief solo passages are contained within a section called "Signature Slash Licks," which basically means you learn to play part of the November Rain solo, NOT the entire song (as I was lead to believe).

There's so much Appetite content in this book, I feel as if I paid twice for the same thing! But at least it has _some_ UYI songs, such as Yesterdays, which is fairly easy to play.

However also be aware that this is very hard - the solo for Sweet Child O' Mine is the hardest solo I've ever played, and they don't make it any easier with the CD. (Listen to how fast it goes!)

Good book, not perfect though.

2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2004-05-27

Other books in the Signature Licks series include both full-speed and slowed-down musical examples on the CD for the tougher/faster passages. This one only includes full-speed tracks, which really limits its use. You may as well just buy a regular tab book or transcribe by ear.

5 out of 5 stars Got Slash?.......2003-09-07

If you ever wanted a perfect transcription of any popular guns and roses song this book is for you. The slowed down versions of the songs are awesome for learning the licks. Be warned this book is very overwhelming when you first look at it, I say any intermediate or advanced guitarist would be able to benfit most from this book.
Good Buy!

1 out of 5 stars This Book Is Garbage !!.......2007-09-22

The authour spends more time talking about his own past, (youth, his sister's wedding [wtf??], novels he has read, John Updike, etc.) than he does about the music. "I still don't know much of anything about Guns N' Roses, and wouldn't want to spoil my fog by reading books and articles about them just yet." (p. 25) Yeah, well, I wish you had. I couldn't finish the book. So if you don't want to read about the GN'R double album, Use Your Illusion I & II, this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.......2007-07-10

I'm writing this having read only 36 pages, so take it for what it's worth. I wanted to put a warning out there though -- this is not, to use the writer's words, a reportorial work. That's why I'm disappointed so far. The writing isn't bad but it's more of a personal essay.

I buy 33 1/3 books to learn the details about how albums I like were made. I want to hear stories from the production, what inspired the songs, what the band was going through, etc. This book doesn't seem to fall in that category.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-12-29

I've being a GNR fan since I was 8 and I was given this book when I was 12(I'm 25 now!). I still have it and its pages are falling out from looking through it countless times. It gives a good chronological look at the band which is left to your own interpretation as there is no text, which I felt was better since GNR fans are fed so many stories about the band. You get the usual commercial view of them, but you also get personal photos which give a good insight into their lives. I thoroughly recommend this book to GNR fans young and old.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent book.......2001-05-30

As a huge fan of gnr, i was anxious to get some kind of book about them. I had all the records and even some rare bootlegs, but i could not find any literature about them. When i stumbled across this book at this site, it was an instant buy. i was very impressed at the quality and depth of Robert John's photographs. I have happened to see GN'R live and Robert John's photos certainly capture their flare and stage presence. A very good book. If you are looking for a biography go buy "The most Dangerous band in the world" or"The True story" If you want a good book of photos spanning GN'R wildest days, i suggest you buy this.

4 out of 5 stars well thought out.......1999-08-19

This book contains several rarely seen pictures of the band. Some are action shots, while others are stills.. All in all, this book captures the G'N'R' attitude very well!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! The pictures are beautiful........1999-07-13

This is the only GNR book I have. I have only started liking them 6 months ago and I'm surprised that book stores still have GNR material around. I'm positive that any fan would love this book. The book has GNR pictured from their early days in 1985 to almost the end in 1992. I love the fact that Robert John shows them from the beginning with their teased hair, and lipstick to a more mature look as they get older. The book has concert photos, backstage pics, GNR rehersing and even some more personel ones with Axl by himself. If you are looking for a biography of the band, then don't buy this one. On the bottom of the pictures Robert John tells you the place and year it was taken but otherwise it is strictly just a photo book, nothing else. I highly recomend it in any way.

5 out of 5 stars The best possible purchase for photos of the band!.......1998-01-24

Robert John is a friend of the band and the favorite photographer. these pictures span the whole time of the band and are beautiful. RJ has captured the spirit of GNR. the forward by Axl Rose also is unique and well-written.

5 out of 5 stars Tirelessly entertaining quotes from the hard rock tip..........2000-07-05

Any pompous faux intellectual can put together books of truely profound quotes from history's greatest figures and most insightful minds...the one missing factor which the reader never realizes is that we ALL live similar experiences. Since anyone can make a rather heart rending statement, but only the famous are taken seriously, it is a refreshment to see poignant as well as meandering confusion in the quotes of the luxurious yet dubious of America's famous. Gun's and Roses was rock's premier talent from 1988 to 1994. Although just a raggedy batch of Hollywood scoundrels who combined precariously to booming success, they inspired a generation and became the envy of their contemporaries. Today they are still mentioned admiringly as well as spitefully proving their power is still existant, and their unforgettable music is played rather abundantly for being a decade old.

One of the world's greatest triumphs is related through the words of it's five players. The statements ranging from filthy to brilliant display Gun's and Roses rather nakedly to any outsiders wanting to taste the bitter sting of success in music. A friend gave this to me as a present one year, and the joy these unabashed quotes bring never leaves me. This is a great book for anyone...

5 out of 5 stars Best Book ever!!!!!!.......1999-06-30

This is the best book I have ever read!! It tells very much of their lifes, and thats what I like!

3 out of 5 stars Nice little book. But don't take it to serious........1997-08-31

Each chapter in the book contains qoutes from the band on the subject of the chapter. There's subject's such as Early Daze, The Music, Axl, Slash, Izzy, Drummers etc. The book miss a chapter about Duff. The book's filled with pictures of the bandmembers. If you read this book it's important to remember that the quotes is taken from interviews etc. and therefore they can originally have meant something else. The fact is that the author of this book got very unpopular w. the GN'R members after he wrote it. All in all it's a nice little book you can read for fun and to get a different view on the band but don't take the qoutes to serious. Remember it's not the band who put it together.
