One of the best!!!.......2007-01-09
What can I say?? Hendrix is amazing... And this songbook will make your guitar cry with all of it... And the best thing is that your drummer and bass player can take a pick too!!!
Precise and detailed.......2006-11-07
This is a great work- I am wholeheartedly impressed.
The transcriptions here are full scores, meaning that every instrument played on each studio recording is notated in sheet music and then tabbed out in the language of that instrument. There is also about a half page description before each song discussing its unique features and mechaincs.
The guitarist who is interested in understanding Jimi's style and techniques could do so with this book, the album itself, and perhaps a few other recordings. And drummers would do well to analyze it also.
As far as quality, the level of detail and accuracy is like nothing I've ever seen in a music book. The author has done the impossable by taking Jimi's techniques and notating them all on paper. Truly impressive, and truly useful.
Hazey.......2006-06-01
First off, this book is HUGE. Almost 400 pages. The biggest tab book I have by half of the book. Hendrix is god on the guitar, no one could compare to him then or now. I love all his songs, now I finally know how to play them. Still working on actually playing them. Every song in this book is awesome. Even the "Star Spangled Banner". I play it COMPLETELY different.
Hendrix.......2006-03-04
Book is very accurate and thorough. There is a paragraph or two about theory (key, scales, techniques) to begin each song. It incudes all solos as well as rythm, and even bass lines. Great book.
Couldn't Have Been Happier!.......2005-09-25
I'm no top notch guitarist who can play some Hendrix with their eye's closed, but i'm all right, and I couldn't have been happier with this book. The Tabs to me seemed like they were dead on accurate. I must admit that some of the chords Mr. Hendrix used are kinda crazy when your fretting them but once you get used to it you'll be allright. If you just got into Hendrix or have been into his music for some time this book won't do you wrong!!

Book Description
"Thirty Three and a Third" is a new series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the last 40 years. The authors provide fresh, original perspectives - often through their access to and relationships with the key figures involved in the recording of these albums. By turns obsessive, passionate, creative, and informed, the books in this series demonstrate many different ways of writing about music. What binds the series together, and what brings it to life, is that all of the authors - musicians, broadcasters, scholars, and writers - are huge fans of the album they have chosen.
Electric Ladyland is one of the greatest guitar albums ever made. During the recording process, Jimi Hendrix at last had time and creative freedom to pursue the sounds he was looking for. In this remarkable and entertaining book, John Perry gets to the heart of Hendrix's unique talent - guiding the reader through each song on the album, writing vividly about Hendrix's live performances, and talking to several of Hendrix's peers and contemporaries.

Superb.......2007-09-18
Very interesting, as usual for the 33 1/3 series. Found out many details about the record and Jimi I did not know about.
Recommended ONLY for the neophyte.......2004-09-10
If you've read anything about Hendrix beyond the liner notes you will find little new here beyond the author's personal memories of seeing Jimi in concert. The actual analysis of the album is spotty at best, shedding very little light (or anything of real interest for that matter) on this masterpeice of rock music.
Considering the cost of this tiny book, there is very little bang for your buck.
Examines Hendrix's unique talent using the album.......2004-09-09
Jimi Hendrix's rock pinnacle Electric Ladyland was one of the best guitar albums ever made for the genre, affording Hendrix the creative expression and freedom he needed for the first time. John Perry examines Hendrix's unique talent using the album as a foundation for his analysis. Electric Ladyland's short stature may make it a difficult library loan, but any fan of the Hendrix sound will consider it an essential guide.
An opinion on Hendrix - far from anything new.......2004-07-26
If your into Hendrix enough to want to find out more about Electric Ladyland, your probably already going to know everything in this book. If you've read such great Hendrix books such as 'Electric Gypsy' then you won't get much from this book other than information obtained that you've read before from 'Electric Gypsy' coloured in this authors opinion on Jimi's music.
The author lays down his opinion that reads like someone either not overly impressed by Jimi Hendrix, or someone that has trouble laying praise where it's due. The author makes big calls in this book which fall flat, for example expressing his view on how Jimi could of edited and recorded certain songs better in his opinion (not unlike like Alan Douglas made true) or ego trips like footnotes after mentioning 'Like A Rolling Stone' at Monterey can only be outdone by the rare hard to find Flamingo Club version in 1968 - where does he get that from? The Flamingo club version is near inaudiable for most of the recording with its vocals and the guitar very distorted at the very least and is no way a superior rendition than Monterey but the book has many little comments by the author like that which only makes you think, is this guy trying to brag about his Hendrix collection? Or does he just have to have a different opinion on everything to try and make his book, which really has nothing new, stand out from the pack? His opinions would be valid if he didn't try to go against the grain to just go against the grain! If you've ever heard or seen Jimi at Monterey you don't need to be told how so many people thought he played crap that night - the evidence that this is one of his greatest performances is right there on CD or on the screen as you watch it which just makes bringing up that negative side without balancing it with the many rave reviews he also got seem targeted. Why point out the bad things and not mention the good?
If you want to learn the technical side of the recording or the technical side of Hendrix, you won't learn it from this book. You'll get the classic Hendrix bio for most of it with this Authors strange comments, some bad reviews for Electric Ladyland to show Hendrix was human after all i guess and an author bringing up all his 'friends' and 'visits' to people that are well documented in knowing Jimi.
All in all, if you have no opinion on Hendrix and read this you probably won't think he's that great and get a distorted opinion on him, if you love Hendrix and read this you'll wonder why this Author bothered to write a book about Jimi in the first place other than to let us know he has so many friends that knew Jimi, was lucky enough to see him play a few times and the funniest of all, could of done some things better in his opinion.
Two stars because there's many books out there with much more information about Electric Ladyland, let alone Hendrix, that aren't trying to re-write Jimi's history from one person's perspective and critique thou it's cheap and quite funny if you have a big Hendrix library anyway.
A guitar fan's wet dream.......2004-07-24
Jimi Hendrix after 30 years from his death is still revered as a guitar hero and innovator in the way the instrument was played and recorded, and Electric Ladyland was a major benchmark in his too short studio recording career in letting him stretch out and play compared with his prior 2 LPs and hit singles.
That this book is written by a guitar afficionado should thus come as no surprise, and the author was clearly influenced by Hendrix at an early age having seen him live in the UK and in his own subsequent career as a guitarist. The content (especially on the individual tracks and their recording) is very guitar playing orientated, explaining a lot of chords, tuning and playing techiques that made Hendrix sound so different and while a fascinating insight into exactly how unique Hendix was in his playing, I suspect it will potentially grate with many non-musicians (of which I am one) though as a long time Hendrix afficionado I must admit I found it all fascinating.
The book also picks up on many side issues that help one understand Hendrix and his times better esp. his position as a black American who in the heated anti Vietnam war and US domestic race riots happening at that time remained politically indifferent and his treatment at the outset and afterwards by white rock critics.
A captivating book especially for Hendrix fans and in the end piece that speculates that Hendrix at the time of his death shortly afterwards had already potentially delivered his best recorded work.

Good Reference & Pracrtice Source.......2007-09-27
Nicely done, and well done companion CD. Includes versions for backup so you can play lead or front. Nice crisp play so you can hear every note and chord. Use with a computer to slow the tempo. Clean white sheet music. Includes Purple Haze, Fire, Wind Cries Mary, Can You See Me?, Hey Joe, All Along The Watch Tower, Stone Free, Crosstown Traffic, Manic Depression, Remember, Red House and Foxey Lady.
Missing some signature pieces like Voodoo Child, Little Wing, Drifting, Stone Free and If Six Was Nine - but a very good Hendrix starter. If you want more, try the Jimi Hendrix Anthology now discounted from $20 down to $14 at Amazon. (I got them both.)

Karokee for guitar! You gotta love it! Do yourself a favor and buy the upgrade from roni, then you'll be able to play ALL the play-along discs (not just hal leonard). I highly recommend this series to anyone getting started, or for the experienced player without a band. I own over a dozen books, and constantly scan for new releases.
Just one problem.......2007-02-03
I got this for one reason. To lurn how to play Voodoo Child just like Jimi did. One problem though. IT DOES NOT HAVE VOODOO CHILD!!! It loses one full star for that alone. How can you sell a guitar book on Jimi Hendrix and not have probably his best guitar peice. Other than that its a great product with some really good music slow down software that is extremely useful
Great. The music blows you away........2007-01-26
I bought this just for the cd. It is great. The music is fantastic. The song is played all the way through without stopping. Then the second time it is slowed down so you can learn it. I'm telling you, if you are a Jimi Hendrix fan like me, you got to get this.
This book converted me.......2006-03-10
It's true, this book is AMAZING! I got it as a gift, and instead of returning it decided to give it a shot. The transcriptions are clean and easy to follow. The Play-along CD is enhanced so if you put it in your PC you can slow down the tempo without changing the pitch. Plus, the recordings are very true to the originals, and the backing band sounds great. I feel like I sound much better playing with the recorded band, than with my own...but don't tell them that!

Get Experienced Again and Again This Gets Better Each Time.......2007-04-02
This is actually the third time I've bought this book. About a decade or so ago I had a copy of this and it got lost or stolen or something. I remembered it because I was actually impressed that the songs herein cold actually be transcribed especially this accureately. I got a second copy after my sight reading skills had improved somewhat and used it often enough for the pages to start to come loose. So, I bought a 3rd copy of it. The transcriptions are challenging to anyone's sightreading abilities, but the rewards of a little bit of effort are very satifying. The book is accurate giving great insight into Hendrix solos and choice of(often apparently jazz influenced)chord voicings. A must for any guitarist who wants to learn these songs.
A Good Source for Investigating Jimi's Style.......2007-03-02
At the time I write this, two other customer reviews exist. One laments the book is full of mistakes and inaccurate transcriptions. The other insists it is note-for-note perfect and an invaluable resource for learning to play these songs. In an article written by Joe Gore for Guitar Player magazine shortly after the first edition of this TAB book was released (around 1989, I believe), he called the Hal Leonard Hendrix series "the finest Hendrix transcriptions available, despite a shocking number of music typos." I think Mr. Gore's statement comes closest to hitting the mark.
Yes, there are mistakes in the book, here and there. But, I think most people can sort them out easy enough. There are some passages (usually those a bit hard to hear on the recording) that I question if they accurately reflect exactly what Hendrix played. But, the majority of the transcriptions are unquestionably correct, and the passages in this TAB book which I think might vary a bit definitely sound good and are "Hendrixesque." Hendrix himself never played the same thing twice, and it's unlikely that anybody is going to be able to play EXACTLY like Hendrix, no matter how perfect the transcription.
So, my take on the situation is that the true usefulness of any transcription book is to serve as a departure point which offers insight into a particular player's style and which provides practice material which allows a player to internalize aspects of that style into their own playing. Therefore, I can live with a book that has mostly accurate transcriptions, in spite of a lot of typos. If you feel the same, you'll might find this book valuable. If not, I guess you'll need to sit down with a recording and try to figure it out for yourself. Actually, that's probably the best way. But, doing so will require having more skill and patience than I do :-)
ripped off!.......2004-02-21
There are so many mistakes in this book with both the notation & tab (too many beats in a bar, mistakes in fingering, etc.)that it's almost funny. In addition to this, some of the transcriptions are ridiculously incorrect with regards to what is actually being played as well. It's really a shame, because it could have been a great book.
The Best Guitar Tab Book Out There!!!!!!.......2002-12-19
This guitar tab book is by far the best one out there! Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all time and this book proves it.There are really great Hendrix classics in here too. Some like "Spanish Castle Magic","Little Wing","Castles Made of Sand",and "Bold As Love". These tabs are all on the money and are great to play and further your skills as a guitar player. If you are a good bassist you can figure out the bass lines from these tabs too. So go out and buy this book..........You Won't be disappointed!

The Ultimate Book.......2001-05-02
Jimi Hendrix was undoubtedly one of the most distinguished and most talented guitarists ever to walk the planet. His life started out in the gutter: no mother, a father overseas, and nothing to rely on but himself. Soon however, he found his true calling, the guitar. One of his father's friends had an old Stratocaster and one night while he was drunk, he sold it to Jimi for hardly anything. From this point on, his life changed drastically; he took his guitar with him everywhere he went, even going as far as sleeping with it. His guitar took him all over the country, to England and back, and then back to London. On his last visit to London, he passed away. Jimi Hendrix was and will always be one of the best guitarists ever.
Provides a well-rounded view of the man and his career.......2001-02-13
This book on legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix takes an unusual turn, gathering eyewitness recollections of his life through the words of his admirers, friends and close observers. From his childhood experiences through adulthood, this uses quotes from documentaries, books, newspapers, TV and Internet sites as well as new interviews to provide a well-rounded view of the man and his career.
noone to trust.......2000-09-27
This book opens the wounds of Jimi's death anew. The author pieces together, as best he can, with recollections from family, band mates, and contemporaries the crushing price fame held for Jimi Hendrix. One can feel the pain, and I actually felt rage against all who seemed out to destroy him. True, he had his own demons, but there seemed noone who was really there to care about the "person" Jimi, only what they could get out of him. Of all books out, this one seemed most objective, if that is possible.
My experience with The Ultimate Experience........1999-12-24
This unique day-by-day account of Jimi Hendrix's life succeeds in driving home the relentless pressures of being a rock star. Drawn from a variety of sources, the book manages a feat rarer than a Hendrix guitar without teethmarks...a coherent recollection of the sixties music scene! An excellent read.

Customer Reviews:
Drumming with Jimi! You too can be on stage with Hendrix!.......2007-08-09
All the Hal Leonard Drum Play-Along Series are well done. This one is especially poignant to the point that we should all know how to play to these songs. After all, this was one of your first albums ever! I promise you, you learn these songs and you will definitely be called up to play one night at a party with some great guitar player and you tell him you know any Jimi song and you'll rock the house down.
Seriously, the book is straightforwardly laid out. The recordings, both with the drums and with out sound great and are mixed well. The music charts are clear and easy to follow too on bright white paper.
The Slow-down feature on the CD is fantastic and worth it alone. You can bring the song down to incredible slow speeds with out losing the tone of the song to hear exactly how the parts are played. Getting the entire series, you'll then be able to cover any rock, funk or jazz tune!

Noel Reddings life as a musician and casualty of the business.......2006-08-04
I put off reading this for years due to hearing from friends who were turned off by the problems the late Noel Redding had getting paid for his contributions to the music of the Experience band. It was worth the read and is a good companion piece to Mitch Mitchell's book about his Experience years. As mentioned in other reviews the writing isn't the best and the last third of the book does go into mind numbing detail of how he was denied royalties on music he helped create that appeared on the 3 albums of JHE.
Noel is pretty honest about his over the top self medicating abuse but there is also there is some humor here in the life of a musican starting out. Some fascinating observations from someone who was there, such as his opinion that as much as everyone loved Jimi Hendrixes guitar playing; it was his intimate talk/singing vocal work that created an atmosphere that really drew people in. Noel probably weighed not a whole lot over 125 pounds and had a somewhat quiet and nasal singing and talking style, but here's a guy that took a bus to an audition as a very young man and was soon touring the world with 2 of the top musicians of the era and holding his own on bass with a dirty driving tone and plenty of inventive ideas of his own . If you like the intro to the song The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, the title of the song Midnight Lightning or the guitar introduction to the song Freedom , they are just a few of the examples of the many things Noel brought to the party and did not receive credit for.
Noels comments that it was the 3rd tour that finished the JHE group off explain why the 2 shows I saw them do in 1968 were unfortunately just not that memorable musically although the first one was exciting. Plus it was way better than going to the high school homecoming dance the same night
Essential reading for any Hendrix fan and an real eye opener into the industry for any budding muscians out there........2005-08-17
Although this is indeed not a particularly well written book, (and I thought Jessica's review was hilarious), you have to bear in mind that Noel was a bass player, not a writer. This is Noel's story and pretty essential reading for any Hendrix fan. Noel clearly, dearly loved Jimi and understood him well and had a good perspective and balance on his character, and events that happened. But obviously he had his opinon.
What struck me most is that it's a real eye opener as to what being a successful musician is like. I also think any budding musician should read this-so they can find out exactly what they're letting themselves in for. It is so easy to imagine the life of a successful musician as glamourous when it's far from it. Even after The Experience were famous they were still going to gigs sitting in the back of a van on the top of the equipment, with their heads banging on the ceiling. Not the fur coat and limo people would perhaps envisage. Although it goes to show that despite no sleep, no time off, no money, and barely the chance of a decent meal, at least a man that looked like "Bob Dylan's grandmother" as Jimi called him, could get more action than Frank Sinatra probably ever did.
Yes, it's full of these boring detailed lists that Redding liked to make of various expenses, but despite this it's still a very entertaining book and the man has a great sense of humour. It's very unfair that Noel never got his money, but if you read this you can see in the end he had what money could never buy-real friends away from the sharks of the music industry, and the love and support of his family. I personaly wouldn't begrudge him a single penny he made from this book. I was very saddened when I heard he died a while back. RIP Noel.
Essential Perspective.......2004-04-08
I picked this up as soon as it was released in the US (which I thought was '92 but Amazon lists as '96). The lasting impression from the first read was all about the bitterness and misfortune Noel Redding had endured during and after his tenure with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Since that first read, I've occasionally used it as a reference, but only for the occasional spot-check.
After reading the new and exceptional Jimi Hendrix: Musician by Keith Shadwick, I knew it was time to give this and other core Hendrix books a fresh look. I'm glad I did. The nearly continuous bitterness, which I found stifling on the first go round did not irritate as much during this re-read. Thus I managed to get past that aspect and see more of the less obvious side of the book. This really is essential reading for those wanting to know more about Jimi and his music.
Noel was a dependable diary-keeper during his Experience days and thus has helped immensely to solidify the fact base for the groups lifetime. One one hand, you could argue that given the impressive record of substance abuse, how reliable are diary notes of the perpetually wasted and hung over but the answer is: more than historical comments made by those that weren't there. And therein lies the true value of this book: Noel was there. Although he may have had concerns about his treatment that added to the already mountainous stress endured by an overworked band, his perspectives, like those of Mitch and Jimi, have helped to frame the picture - to put the dirt on the soles of the work shoes as it were.
So the bottom line is that I encourage anyone interested in the real Jimi Hendrix story to read this book (and others as well). Sure, there is bias, but so what? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially the people that were THERE.
Rest in peace, Noel.
One of the best books on Hendrix.......2001-04-22
As always, when dealing with books on legendary people like Hendrix, you're better off with something written by someone who was actually *there*. And Noel Redding certainly was there.
Certainly one of the best books I've read on Hendrix.
Good book but pages are Blank.......2000-03-19
The following pages are blank:
91-92 106-107 98-99 94-95
lots of picture pages are blank also.
I had to return the book for this reason. Otherwise this book was a good inside view of the music business and the experience.
Book Description
This illustrated tribute to Seattle guitar god Jimi Hendrix is the third volume in a new series of rock photography books drawn from the archives of Rex Features, London's premier picture library for the performing arts.
In 1965, after a stint as a session player in New York, guitarist Jimi Hendrix signed with former Animals bassist Chas Chandler and went to England. In 1966, he burst on to the London music scene with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, blowing away the likes of the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and the Rolling Stones. There was simply no one else releasing records with Hendrix's blend of emotion and toughness: a blues sensibility filtered through the latest electronic effects. In 1967, he triumphantly returned to the U.S. for the Monterey Pop Festival and instant superstardom. This collection of images, most of them never before seen, follows Hendrix's career from the earliest London shows and the 1967 tours to the "quiet period" of 1968-69. Hendrix, who died of a drug overdose in 1970 at the age of 27, continues to this day to top ROLLING STONE's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

SUPER!!!.......2007-09-09
Great photos of The Great Man Himself. Full page photos showing Jimi in London from when he first arrived here. He always seems to appear larger than life - really happy to add this book to my Jimi collection.
Virtually all color photos in a big book. Fantastic........2007-01-05
What do you want in a photo book of Jimi Hendrix? You want lots of high quality photos that are not tiny, that are big and all over the book where there's minimal written word and the photos just keep comin'. From the back cover: "Over 130 iconic, rare, and previously unpublished images of the Jimi Hendrix Experience from the archive of Rex Features, Britain's leading picture library." Published 2005. Almost half the photos take up the full size of a page. If it's Jimi photos with and without the band, that you're lookin' for, do not pass up this book. I own about 12 Jimi books and this is the best photo one, no question. My copy has a cover photo that I think is a better photo than the one shown here. He's got a cool coat, a rose pattern shirt and red pants and leaning on a staircase wall with a cigarette.
A top pick for any dedicated Hendrix fan.......2006-08-17
In 1965 guitarist Hendrix signed with former Animals bassist Chandler and went to England, making a name for himself with his Jimi Hendrix Experience and returning to the U.S. several years later to become a star. REX COLLECTIONS: THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE gathers color photos to follow his career form his earliest London shows and 1967 tours to later years. Many of these photos are new to this book, most are full-page presentations, and the commentary provides a fine survey of Hendrix's life. A top pick for any dedicated Hendrix fan.

Book Description
Jimi Hendrix's social meaning, his sexual mystery, and his scientific explorations in the field of sound are here addressed from a black perspective. This unique introduction to a man who, despite his popular appeal, has never made it into the pantheon of 20th-century black icons, incorporates extensive interviews with black Americans who shed light on Hendrix's complicated racial relationships. Midnight Lightning explores how Hendrix exploded the complacently segregated world to emerge as an icon for white boys, why his songs were not heard on black radio, and why black people once viewed him as a hippie Uncle Tom. Also explored are his connection to the Black Power movement, how he electrified soul music and made the electric guitar supplant the human voice, how he revolutionized the use of technology in popular music, and how black his music really was. His sex appeal-especially for black women-is discussed, as are how he redefined rock fashion, why nobody was really mad at him for sleeping with white women (at the same time as Sammy Davis, Jr. was being harassed and threatened for kissing a white woman onstage), and how he was marketed as a white performer. Explained are the ways in which Hendrix subverted and destabilized black masculine stereotypes, changing the way black music and black identity are perceived.

Jimi was African American Period. The white american society today as well as then always viewed anyone mixed black as being black. There were scores of african american people who were mixed with other races that america still see's them as just being black....that is how it has always been. THIS BOOK SPEAKS THE TRUTH, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
America, particularly back then didn't have a problem with Hendrix because his musical genius overshadowed his race. Had Hendrix played strictly soul music then. His treatment and his fame would have been virtually unheard of and he would have not been such an icon that he is now.
on a persone note: I remember growing up in the 1970's in new york and watching white teen age kids use the -N- word while walking around wearing a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt. This the type of experience the author is trying to express and/or convey to the audience. The Black Experience and everything it embodied throughout the turbulent 1960's when Hendrix came on the scene.
Tell It Like It Is, Or Was!.......2003-11-18
Jimi Hendrix is an African American musician who excelled at his craft; he was discovered by several would be managers and producers who obviosly didn't know what to make of him. The last to 'discover' him was graced by luck on having Hendrix relocate to another muisic, and cultural, climate. This gave Hendrix the 'void' he needed to be heard. In the US, New York, in particular, Hendrix confronted the gatekeepers of 'Black Music'(blues, jazz, R&B) tradition (the way it is, the way it works)and philosophy (how a certain music should be played)- nothing bad in and of itself it gave us Howlin' Wolf, Coltrane, James Brown, and others. Unless he was playing in the tradition and philosophy of guitarist Charlie Christian or Wes Montgomery, Hendrix was told there was no room for him to be heard. He was to far removed (advanced, different, or what have you) for them to understand.
The relocation to England where there was no blues, jazz, or R&B gate-keepers to be confronted with proved successful for his being heard. However this incident, a stroke of fate, has caused more misunderstanding and mis-interpretation (some deliberate) of Hendrix than one could imagine.
It is this misunderstanding and mis-information that Greg Tate tackles head-on - The Race Issue and Jimi Hendrix.
This is the first serious indept effort at this explosive subject. Tate makes it very clear that a plane ride to Europe did not transform Hendrix from that of an African American (a Black man), with American-made racial baggage, to something other. Interestingly, if not unwittingly, he demonstrates how it is that White people changed if only to let Hendrix in. These, would-be white fans, associates and lovers, are the sames Whites (speaking in general terms) from whom Black people were demanding civil rights, human rights, an end to colonization, oppression, racism, etc. (Remember the 1960's?). Tate shows that whites were/are willing to let Hendrix in because he 'appeared different' - different than their stereotypes and myths that defined Black people as dangerous and other-worldly (I'm being nice here.) - and, for what they could extract from him for themselves.
Tate exposes racism at work in the shaping of the Jimi Hendrix myth. How white people defined him for themselves ("He's abscent of race and politics"), and projected that image to themselves and to others - including Black people. Yet we get to see Hendrix for who he was, an artist, more concerned with his art than politics, though he did mature politically - 'Machine Gun', 'Earth Blues', 'Power Of Soul', 'Star Spangled Banner' ('nuf said). However he, Hendrix, comes to his own defense once back in the US as he reconnects with the community that birthed and nurtured him. This to became a matter of contention for those that wanted him to be something else. Hence, attacking the 'Gypsys Suns and Rainbows', and 'Band Or Gypsys'. (see my book on the subject - 2004)
The only short comming with this book is it's too brief where this subject deserves more indepth examination and explaination; and contrary to Tate's assertion that this is a "Primer For Blackfolks", this book it too advanced for most people unaware of Hendrix. The book is number 3 on my list of must read after 1). David Henderson's - Voodoo child of the Aquarian Age (Biography of Jimi Hendrix), 2). Charles Sharr Murray - Crosstown Traffic (biography of Jimi Hendrix.
Midnight Lighting is a must read for both honest and dishonest people; it is a must read for truth. It is a must read in getting to know a bit more about Jimi Hendrix the human being than the myth-makers would rather make of him.
Tate should be commended and commissioned to do a fuller treatment of this exciting and agitating subject.
why does it smell like something is burning?.......2003-09-27
lighter fluid + this book (saying its name is more than it deserves) + lighter = godsend
this is sadder than the Band of Gypsys movie. a complete waste of paper, ink, time, and not to mention oxygen pointlessly fueling this author. i can't get into how angry this makes me and how disrespectful it is to Jimi- am i alone in this?
yes he was African.
but gasp!
yes he was Irish.
yes he was Native American.
where are the ill-thought out shrines to the other pieces of His heritage? why are musicians of any other ethnicity scolded for playing "black" music but for some reason its another thing for Jimi to play rock n' roll music "in that way only Jimi could"?
songs like "Cherokee Mist," and "I Don't Live Today" feature Native American influences. where's the gossip mill spitting that fact up?
its just as bad as all the hoopla made over what The Beatles or who ever were talking about in their songs. in actuality they would just mix and match words with no metaphorical intent at all.
buddy miles was called in to play drums because Jimi had to honor a contractual obligation that was signed "Jimmy Hendrix." Mitch Mitchell, who played AFTER the band of gypsys shows (sorry Mitch, but you BUTCHERED machine gun as far as recorded evidence shows) was not in new york when the fillmore dates were played. Noel Redding LEFT the band causing Jimi to turn to help from an OLD FRIEND (they were in the army together, played in bands together, etc. etc.). Billy Cox was called in because he was an old friend- not because he was black. buddy miles had sat-in with Jimi in various studio sessions and was a friend from the chitlin circuit.
read the above and save yourself from the rubbish that is this book.
i suggest you read "Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy" to get the full story.
Jimi Hendrix was beyond any color. He himself had his own perspective on color (purple with envy, red with passion, etc.)... so why would it be a big deal- the color of his skin? He was a member of the human race and he came from somewhere past outer-space.
THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN HAS/HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.
an inquisition should be held to put people like this author on trial for blasphemous mutations of Jimi's life, music, and motives.
~ "Those poor trees" ~.......2003-09-19
That a few trees had to give their very all for this is a crying shame.
If the "Hendrix Family" are looking to sue someone, this "author" should be prime fodder for those lawyers to help buy their children braces.
A shame against the Hendrix name.
Interesting premise but ultimately fails.......2003-09-05
The chronicling of Jimi Hendrix's life and career has often been told from White writers who have failed to consider how his experiences on the chitlin circuit and in Harlem helped shape his style. Hendrix worked on the circuit for years but this period is often given short shift aside from swipes at Jimi's R&B colleagues for their apparent failure to appreciate his talent.
So I was hoping that Greg Tate's work would provide that perspective. Unfortunately, Tate's book reads like a hap hazard stream of consciousness with psuedo intellectual pretensions. I wasn't looking for a straight biography but I hoped that the author would present a clearer look of Hendrix's somewhat complex relationship with Black America during his lifetime and after death. He only touches briefly on how Black audiences seem to have a greater appreciation for Jimi's Band of Gypsies period than do White fans and writers. Why did Hendrix feel the need to hook up with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles? Why did he return to Harlem and re-establish contact with old friends? Was he trying to change his musical direction? The book doesn't go into these questions deeply enough.

Every wonder why no volume @".......2006-12-08
Have you ever wonder why there is no volume tow or three of this book? There is no there. The book makes a promise and then doesn't deliver. The stuff in this book is so basic and easy that there is no way you will play like Jimi when you get through it. Very thin stuff and material. Song are not really arranged. Get if for a joke or for a really small kid, but if you want to get serious get something else.
This is just what I needed!!!.......2006-05-30
Wow, this book is awesome! (Experience Hendrix Beginning Guitar Method Book 1) It really lays out the first stages of playing guitar using the music of Jimi Hendrix. Other method books I've checked out are very dry and not entertaining and you end up learning lame tunes like Aura Lee, Skip to My Lou, Mary Had A Little Lamb... I want to show my friends I can rock, not be embarrassed by playing lame tunes, "Hey Dave, check out the way I can jam on Skip to My Lou"... NOT.
This book allows the beginner to learn how to play Jimi riffs while learning the basics of the guitar, music theory, scales,... The guitar really makes sense to me now and I'm excited about learning more. I have hope knowing "I CAN REALLY DO THIS!!!"
The CD really helped me figure out the riffs, scales, and instructions. It was like having a guitar teacher there in the room showing me how to play, very cool!
I read the review where the one guy from Florida bashes the book, but it's pretty obvious he has been playing guitar for awhile and didn't read "Beginning Guitar Method" "BOOK 1". Come on dude, read the title before you buy something. J
Just plain bad!.......2005-08-12
I really hate to be so critical and I am usually not one to write negative reviews, I guess every product like this has its place, but this book is just plain horrible. Where do I start?
First off, the cd sounds like it was recorded in a basement somewhere, it is really poor quality, and the instructor keeps talking while he is playing the examples and it really interferes with being able to hear it.
Second, I think that the content is not as advertised. I was expecting to see full tab for some Hendrix songs in here along the way and some instruction on how to play them, with maybe some lead tracks slowed down to better understand them. This was not the case. It only shows a few little elementary examples and that is it. There are no full tabbed songs and examples here. There are a few side notes here and there that try to tie in Hendrix techniques, but fail pretty bad in my opinion. The coverage of the major scale and other techniques is really bad and could confuse a lot of people. There are way better resources on the Internet for free, so why pay for this very thin, very bad cd and book just because Hendrix is on the cover?
Bottom line is this: This is a very very elementary level, poorly written book about guitar theory with Jimi Hendrix on the cover, that is about it. Save your money and learn a lot more on the Internet for free. Just search for guitar theory on Google.com and you will see. If you want to actually learn some Hendrix songs and techniques I would suggest looking into Hal Leonard's Jimi Hendrix - Signature Licks book. It has fully tabbed songs along with regular and slow speed examples.
A great book for beginners.......2002-12-02
This is a great book for beginners (4.5*). While it will not teach you everying, it covers most of the basics(although the minor pentatonic scale box is conspicuously absent) and surprisingly concisely. It is very attractively formated and includes a useful CD. By focusing on the music of well known Jimi Hendrix tracks the beginner can feel real meaningful progress from the start. There is also a good website associated with this book. I wish I had this book when I first started! This book alone is a good starting point and should provide inspiration -- I would also recommend David Meads excellent beginners guide to accompany this and fill in the gaps. By the way there is a more advanced Jimi Hendrix follow on to this book by the same author but I think it comes as a 2 video set possibly with a book attached -- I have not tried that (yet) so I cannot comment on its value.]
Beginning guitar: Fun and Informative.......2002-10-29
I checked out this book from the library out of curiosity. I figured that anything Hendrix would be impossible for a beginner. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book is a perfect book to start learning with. It teaches theory by demonstrating its use in Jimi's music. It is an excellent starter reference and has plenty of fun exercises to practice. On top of that it in includes a instructional CD so you can hear the ideas described and hear if you are practicing correctly. I have just begun learning how to play and this is my favorite book. For [X] you can learn to jam with Jimi!
