Customer Reviews:
graphs are incredible, text is wordy.......2006-08-27
The graphs summarize lots of important information in a clear and easy to understand format.
Some part of the text is wordy, not very concise. It helps to develop the breadth and depth of the text but meanwhile it's quite distracting and sometimes confusing for grasping the key concepts.
The best biology book ever.......2005-08-05
I absolutely love this book. The explanations are thorough and understandable and the pictures and diagrams cannot be beat. Truly a great read. The book goes into enough detail, but not too much that you get confused. Thank you Purdue bio department for choosing this book!! Highly recommended!
Excellent book for College Biology.......2004-12-24
I utilized this book for my college biology classes. It was very complete and had great details on photosynthesis, Krebs cycle, glycolysis. I even liked the chapters on animal structure and function, quite interesting. However, the chapter on genetics was the hardest to read. I had to re-read pages over again to understand what Raven was trying to teach. If you want to know what is the best study guides for college biology to study from, get the following by Patrick Leonardi--
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 1)
Topics: Organziation of Living Things and Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell and Energy Pathways, Reproduction and Heredity, Genetics.
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 2)
Topics: Evolution, Ecology, Kingdom Bacteria, Kingdom Protista, Kingdom Fungi, Viruses, Plant Form and Function
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 3)
Topics: Kingdom Animalia, Organization of the Animal Body, Animal Form and Function, Animal Reproduction, Development and Behavior.
The last three study guides prepared me for the kind of questions that were asked on my college exams. This helped me cut a lot of time in my studying because now I new what to focus on. Raven's book is a also a must buy.

Delicious love scenes!.......2007-09-16
This author was recommended to me recently and this book was my first read. It is a quick and captivating historical romance about two unlikely people who seem destined to fall in love. There are HOT, steamy, love scenes, but the background story and tension are a little weaker. I will continue reading this author.
The Raven Prince.......2007-09-16
I liked it very much. It was very humous. I like that in a book
It was refreshing for a change to see the woman taking the encitive for a a change. I liked also the dog in the book, that was very funny.
Thank heavens for secondary characters.......2007-09-07
Edward makes a very sympathetic hero - all of his actions are understandable and within character, given his sad history and his need to have an heir or have everything revert to the Crown (Anna told him she was barren). All of his actions - that includes going to a brothel for sex. Very much out of character was Anna's trips to the brothel to have anonymous sex with Edward (she wore a mask). Although she knew who he was, to him she was 'that whore from Aphrodite's'. And that was called lovemaking??
The dialogue and the quirkiness and variety of the supporting cast made this a book worth reading, but this is definitely not a keeper.
A Great Read.......2007-08-13
I truly enjoyed this book. It was one of the best I've read since early Johanna Lindsey. The storyline is a different and new historical romance tale. The characters were interesting, intelligent, and made me laugh. Hoyt did a great job of building the tension between the couple. In the end, I really wanted them to get together. Plus, the love scenes really sizzled.
I finished the last page and turned right back to the first to start the book again. (I got part way through the book the first time before I started speed reading. I couldn't wait to see what was gonna happen next.) I loved it more the second time when I actually read the whole thing.
After reading this book a second time I immediately started THE LEOPARD PRINCE. I'm halfway through my 3rd reading of that story and have logged on to pre-order THE SERPENT PRINCE. It's killing me to have to wait a couple more weeks for the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this author. I excited to read more from her in the future. HIGHLY recommend.
Satisfying read.......2007-08-07
I've seen nothing but good reviews on this one, (well, mostly) as I'm sure you have ... and I'm adding one more! Very satisfying read.
Set in the late 1700's when powdered wigs were still the rage, we first meet Our Hero and Heroine when they all but crash into each other on the road. His horse get startled and unseats him into a puddle when he happened upon her making her way home from the village. Although Edward berates Anna for startling his horse she stands up to him and makes an impression on him that he doesn't forget. Edward is an Earl and she is a widowed woman- a lady to be sure but not of his class. Although this story IS set in the 1700's it reads more like an Austen novel. I kept picturing her in a cottage much like the small one that Elinor and Marriane Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility moved into after their sister-in-law gave them the boot.
Edward is not a classic romance hero. His face and body is scarred with pockmarks but we soon forget that much as Anna did, because his personality is so confident. (I must confess, I haven't read a romance hero that I've liked more in long time!) he's brusque to the point of rude but he also has a soft side that, naturally Anna brings out. Anna is also a strong enough heroine to match him and her soft heart, as well as intelligence, makes her quite likable.
After their initial meeting Anna thinks she'll never see him again, but thru a twist of fate ends up as Edward's personal secretary. When she discovers she has an attraction to him, and suspects he has one to her, she is frustrated beyond belief when he leaves for London. She knows full well he's visiting a brothel, because she saw the bill in his desk drawer, and decides to step out of society's confines to follow him. (Conveniently she's befriended a woman who has an "in" to the very same brothel.) She hides her identity behind a mask, and ensures that SHE is the one he will meet with when he gets there.
The sex is hot, and Edward finds himself bewildered because, although he can't get Anna out of his mind, this new woman has turned his fancy as well.
There is of course some things (or persons I should say) that come in to complicate the situation even more, but, in the end they have their happily ever after and we've had an entertaining read!

In the second of the "Merlin Missions"--hardback additions to Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series--plucky heroes Jack and Annie must once again must travel back in time to rescue Camelot from looming danger.
One wonders why Merlin can't handle this sort of thing himself, but then of course we wouldn't get a chance to see Jack and Annie have another seat-of-the-pants adventure, getting mixed up with shape-shifting magic, armies of birds, a puzzling gem of power, and all sorts of other trouble. With the help of their old pal Teddy (Morgan le Fay's apprentice, last seen in dog form in four earlier Tree House stories), the two "Master Librarians and Magicians of Everyday Magic" must solve the mystery behind a castle full of ghosts and a menacing army of ravens. Not surprisingly, half the trouble comes in unraveling Merlin's riddles and helping Teddy use his rhyming magic correctly.
Osborne doesn't challenge readers overmuch (including the constant restatement of plot elements, perhaps worried that kids might otherwise forget or lose interest) and many parts of the story barely convince (like Teddy's "period" dialogue, e.g., "'Tis cool indeed"), but fans of the Magic Tree House will no doubt love another installment. (Ages 6 to 9) --Paul Hughes

READ THIS BOOK PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-07
If you like adventure books, than read this book. This book is about three kids who go to a castle and try to help a family, while trying not to be too scared. This is a really good book for anyone to curl up and read. It also has easy text for young readers to read and understand. Maybe you will like this book if you read it too.
Great series. .......2006-11-04
My son absolutely adores this series. He just turned 7. I still am reading the stories to him, but he can pick up some words and phrases as I read to him. We read the series in order and now are beginnning to reread them.
This story can be read individually, but I recommend reading the earlier ones to get to know the characters. Jack and Annie are very likeable. They try to achieve their goal with the assistance of clues given to them by the magician Merlin. It is good for problem solving and also has alot of educational tidbits.

Great Purchase.......2007-10-03
I am happy with the purchase that I Made. It was delivered on time and was in great shape.
Excellent Book for Introduction to Environmental Science.......2007-03-17
I was asked to evaluate ths for the textbook selection committee at a local high school for possible use as the text book for an environmental science class next year. Since my degree is in Environmental Science, and I have done a lot of work with environmental education, I have read a large number of environmental science books and have seen the good, bad and worst of books on the market.
At first I just planned to skim the book, but after reading a few pages I decided to look at the book more closely, and I was impressed with what I saw. The book is well written in clear, easy to understand language, using a good amount of well done graphs, charts and photos. The layout, in addition, was good, making the book flow in an orderly manner.
The information in the book was excellent, and covered the entire range, as much as is possible in one book, of environmental science. The biology and chemistry were integrated nicely and flowed smoothly.
I have rated this book as four stars only because I feel the authors didn't cover the section on renewable energy as well as I would have liked. The book tended to move through the subject rather quickly, offering only a limited view of what can be done to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. In all other ways this book was superior to many I have read.
I would highly recommend this for an introduction course in college, and also think it would bean excellent choice for a text at the AP or regular high school level, provided the students had enough science background to be able to understand the science. I even believe that a motivated home schooled student could study from this book and do quite well in the subject. Overall, one of the best introductory text books I've had the pleasure of reading.
Environment by John Allif.......2004-05-22
The thing that I like the most about this book is the way chemistry is incorporated into the sciences that relate to environment. It has all the basic chemistry skills required for one to be able to relate to environment at the introductory level.
The Appendix on Environmental Chemistry is very well presented. It has most of the concepts that one require in this course. It is written in short and to the point to avoid confusion, but with high clarity. That is what students appreciate. Students do not need to refer to other textbooks. The material includes all that a student need to understand the basic concepts of chemsitry as applied to environmental science.
The format is outstanding. It is best suited for students taking Environmental Science. It just delivers materials of basic interest with excellent problems and things to ponder sections. The illustrations are superb.
Students are often frustrated with voluminous information. They usually buy a book and are turned off and do not read it. They need concise and just the right stuff in it. This book has that quality. Students would love it and I am glad it is on the market.
It was a delight reading this study guide. Excellent job! It just does a good service to students.

Each Llewellen book has a cool introduction about the history of the holiday. I recommend all the sabbat books in this series - - they have a lot more information than in any individual sabbat book.
Raven Grimassi explains it all.......2007-05-05
May brings thoughts of celebration and embracing the power of nature. Many cultures today continue to hold May Day festivals that include a Maypole. We see it as a symbol of spring, but what does this tradition mean? Where did it originate and what is the purpose? Raven Grimassi explains it all, and so much more in Beltane: Springtime Rituals, Lore & Celebration.
Today's society is one that often shies away from coexisting with nature. Many are not even aware of the glory mid spring, blooming in its entire splendor, because they work in offices all day, or dwell in cities where little is seen of the signs. As a whole, we have gotten off track from our synchronicity with nature, and we can all benefit from trying to remedy this.
May Day celebrations, today, are a way of putting that honor for Mother Nature back into our lives. But it all began in ancient fertility festivals. May Day has a wonderfully rich history and this book explains it all, from the Maypole to the Beltane fire. So who were these festivals for, originally? In honor of many! The Green Man, a symbol of life, fertility and growth, is just one of the many spirits of May that are brought into the light here.
A spring evening bonfire wouldn't be complete without stories of little people, and Raven shares many for you to pass on. Hikes through ever greening forests just wouldn't be the same if we didn't imagine the faeries peeking from behind woodland blooms. The warmer weather turns our thoughts to Mother Nature's helpers, since ancient times. Here you will find many stories and legends that are delightful to read and reflect on. For those with green thumbs, the book includes lists of flowers and their meanings, trees and their associations to faeries and plants associated with goddesses. You will be well learned in the meanings behind your greenery and will be able to plant special gardens that are rich with lore.
What festival or even a quiet celebration would be complete without spells and recipes to try? Attracting love in spring is a tradition we cannot deny. "In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love," Tennyson tells us. Why not try it? A serenity spell might be just what is needed to face final exams. Recipes for custard and May wine are just the things to begin your own personal celebration. If you are new to the old rituals, complete instructions are provided to help you honor Mother Nature, either on your own or in a group, even including directions for decorations.
Beltane, or May Day, is celebrated around the world. There are many traditions to choose from. However you celebrate, Raven Grimassi's book can help you understand and enjoy the holiday, and embrace the warmer weather that everyone welcomes.
Traditions!.......2007-03-29
Raven Grimassi is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. He writes about many traditions and will show similarities to help you understand where and how these traditions began. Whether you're just researching or Wiccan, I would recommend this and any of this author's books. Yet another to add to your library.
Not best of the Llewellyn Holy Days Series.......2007-03-17
I have really enjoyed the other Llewellyn series books that I have read thus far. Unfortunately, I can not include this one in that group. I was really disappointed. The writer spent the first half of the book constantly repeating what he'd written in the sentence, paragraph, or page just before. He also spent way to much time going into discussions that would better be suited to an historical(only)study on the subject.
Very little of this book actually dealt with the Beltane/May Day holy day. The writer also spent a lot of time writing about the 'supposed' sacrifices, evils, etc. done by ancient pagans - something that took me by surprise, as Raven is actively involved in the Wiccan Ways.
I like Grimassi, no matter what he writes about.......2006-01-29
Grimassi usually tackles a much broader scope of subject matter and by limiting himself to Beltane he has undertaken a task that might seem outside his usual habits. But he pulls it off with good writing and capable research. By limiting himself to specifics of the Sabbat he is forced to narrow his focus more than is his wont, but what he does write about, he writes about well and thoroughly. To be honest, the entire Llewellyn Sabbat series has seemed kind of light-handed, so I can't call this Grimassi's finest hour, but it's still quite good for the kind of book it is.

Book Description
BIOLOGY is an authoritative majors textbook with evolution as a unifying theme. In revising the text, McGraw-Hill has consulted extensively with previous users, noted experts and professors in the field. It is distinguished from other texts by its strong emphasis on natural selection and the evolutionary process that explains biodiversity.
Not only has the book been thoroughly updated to reflect rapid advances, there is more emphasis today on the teaching of concepts and this has led to significant changes in how the material is presented. Technology also plays a greater role in teaching and the Online Learning Center found at http://www.mhhe.com/raven6 provides professors and students alike with an abundance of resources.
Five considerations influenced this revision. They are: 1) Focus on concepts; 2) Reinforcing Ideas; 3) Emphasizing relevance to students; 4) Keeping up with new developments; and 5) Careful editing.

Wow a biology book thats fun to read.......2005-12-17
This is a great biology book. One of my favorite things about this book is the diagrams. I also like the sections on human origins and the individual sections on different organisms. This book is as good or might even be better then the Campbell biology-that speaks for itself
Complete and very good textbook!.......2004-08-14
I used this book for my college biology I and II classes. My favorite part of the book was animal structure and function. Although the writing in this book is on a pretty high level, nothing was left out--very complete. Sometimes it was hard to understand the chapters on genetics. Then again genetics is a hard topic. I used additional sources to clarify on what I learned in Raven's book.
I used AP Biology by Beck. This book was a helpful study guide. This was easy to comprehend. Made biology easier to learn.
However, what really did it for me was Patrick Leonardi's:
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
This study guide comes in 3 volumes, make sure to get all three if you take biology I and II. If you are only taking Biology I, you can probably get away with only getting volume 1 and 2. These study guides had very good questions on every topic that is tested on in college biology. It was organized into specific sections, making it very helpful for exam preparation. It was so complete that it had the kind of questions that were asked on my exams. Don't go blind into an exam. These books are very helpful.
One of those books you take with you on a deserted island.......2001-06-25
.....or if you had to travel back in time. I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... well before the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be. It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about biology; from modern cell theory to ecology. All you have to do is look this over and you'll see why I highly recommend it. Does any other bio textbook even compare?
BIOLOGY TEACHERS N.B........2001-05-29
This is by far the finest Introductory Biology textbook I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Biology teachers, do yourselves (not to mention your students) a favor--make this the required text for your Biology I (and II) Class! Special Thanks goes out to Dr. Michael Hoefer...for requiring this textbook!
Best intro to Bio book out there.......2001-04-18
This is definitely the best intro to bio books out there. As a graduate student I got the chance to read lots of bio books and this one by far is the best. The chapters are well organized and easy to follow and gives you the depth needed to pursue any area of biology. When it was time for me to student teach this was the book of my chose. It expensive but definiely worth it to any biologist. The CD-ROM is also very good!
Book Description
A True Story of the Berlin Airlift and the Candy that Dropped from the Sky.
Life was grim in 1948 West Berlin, Germany. Josef Stalin blockaded all ground routes coming in and out of Berlin to cut off West Berliners from all food and essential supplies. Without outside help, over 2.2 million people would die.
Thus began the Berlin Airlift, a humanitarian rescue mission that utilized British and American airplanes and pilots to fly in needed supplies. As one of the American pilots participating in the Airlift mission, Lt. Gail S. Halvorsen helped to provide not only nourishment to the children but also gave them a reason to hope for a better world. From one thoughtful, generous act came a lifelong relationship between Lt. Gail and the children of Berlin.
This is the true story of a seven-year-old girl named Mercedes who lived in West Berlin during the Airlift and of the American who came to be known as the Chocolate Pilot.
Artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen's evocative paintings illuminate Margot Theis Raven's powerful story of hope, friendship and remembrance.
About the Author: Margot Theis Raven has been a professional writer working in the fields of radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and children's books for thirty years. She has won five national awards, including an IRA Teacher's Choice award. Ms. Raven earned her degree in English from Rosemont College and attended Villanova University for theater study, and Kent State University for German language. Ms. Raven splits her time living in Concord, MA, Charleston, SC and West Chesterfield, NH.
About the Illustrator: Born in the Netherlands, Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Holland. He immigrated to the United States in 1976, and years later he became a children's book illustrator. Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot is Nick's ninth children's book with Sleeping Bear Press.

Great Addition to your Library.......2007-09-09
We loved this book. We read it last year while studying about Germany. We loved it so much we bought it ourselves. Beautiful true story about how even in the hardships of war, blessing happen. The kids and I even cried a little as we read this one. Just a great read with great illustrations as well.
A Gem of a Book!.......2007-06-08
Some years ago, I "dragged" my wife and son to meet the Candy Bomber when he came through town. He gave a really nice speech in which he told the story of Mercedes. Amazingly, I had finally found a pilot who hit a sweet note with them. A year or two later, they even went to meet him again, and my son caught candy he dropped at the airport. Well, when the book came out, my wife latched onto it in an instant. She was so taken with the book and the retelling of the story of Mercedes, that she has incorporated it into her class room. Super nice man and touching story. The author did a splendid job that does both justice. You'll enjoy this one!
Beautiful and moving.......2007-05-27
A lovely story of a little-known episode in post-World War II Europe, the Berlin Airlift, and the American pilot who knew that for children, chocolates and sweets were almost more important than the basic supplies the Airlift was providing the citizens of West Berlin, so he sent those along with the rest of his cargo, and in doing so, gave them hope.
Margot Theis Raven movingly depicts an important time in history and the gallantry and heart of the man who `rained down sweets' on a city that needed it. A wonderful read with fascinating historical information that kids and adults will enjoy.
Bravo, Ms. Raven!
Kind, heroic American soldier grants German child's wish.......2003-04-08
This true story of hope, kindness and heroism is a reminder that there are American soldiers who have provided a variety of rescues for people in other countries, a reminder that every child is important, a reminder that one caring person can change the world. There's even a subtle message of the power of prayer. The illustrations are as beautiful, sweet, and historically accurate as the story itself. The heart-warming text gives children a true living American hero to emulate in the Chocolate Pilot and a child to relate to in Mercedes. Grown-ups love this book as much as children do.

"Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot: A True Story of the Berlin "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot": This is a true Story of the Berlin Airlift and the Candy That Dropped from the Sky by Margot Theis Raven, Gijsbert Van Frankenhuyzen" demonstrates the true meaning of the human sprit and the impact of that sprit upon generation after generation. While I was reading this story I was reminded of a saying which emphasizes how truly important our roles, as adults, are in the lives of children, ...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child." This true story is truly remarkable and a must to share with adults and children.

Robin Hood
The Legend Begins Anew
For centuries, the legend of Robin Hood and his band of thieves has captivated the imagination. Now the familiar tale takes on new life, fresh meaning, and an unexpected setting.
Hunted like an animal by Norman invaders, Bran ap Brychan, heir to the throne Elfael, has abandoned his father's kingdom and fled to the greenwood. There, in the primeval forest of the Welsh borders, danger surrounds him-for this woodland is a living, breathing entity with mysterious powers and secrets, and Bran must find a way to make it his own if he is to survive.
Like the forest itself, Hood is deep, dark, and at times savagely brutal-yet full of enchantment and hope. Internationally-acclaimed author Stephen R. Lawhead has created a lyrical rendering of a time-honored story that will lead you down strange pathways into another time and place.

booklover.......2007-08-24
My first reading of a "Robin Hood" novel.Once I finished reading it ,I knew that this would be the standard by which I would compare other novels in the genre.Stephen Lawhead is a great writer.Reading this book was like watching a movie in that it had me picturing all sorts of images in my head whilst reading. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough!
Excellent twist on an old legend.......2007-08-23
This book was better than I expected and I can't wait for Book 2 of the Trilogy!
I especially enjoy historical fiction and this was no disappointment. The detail and intricacy were superb, yet the pace was fast enough to keep me reading deep into the night.
Lawhead is a Christian author and this is categorized as "Christian Fiction", but it's certainly not theologically overbearing, nor is it trite like so much other Christian fiction.
Let fly!.......2007-08-02
This Robin Hood re-telling is intriguing for its re-creation of the famous historical legend, and Lawhead keeps the pace uptempo and interesting drawing one into the tale. The book moves along effortlessly and provides a nice bit of relaxation and entertainment. It is a great tale to enjoy and relax upon.
Tip: Read it from the end to the beginning...or at least start with the explanation of the setting (found at the end of the book): Wales in an earlier time frame, and Lawhead's reasoning is intriguing having to do with his investigation of historical records of the Robin Hood myth and the topography of England/Wales, as well as the Welsh people themselves. A knowledge of setting BEFORE I read the book would have helped me appreciate Lawhead's project a bit more.
Lawhead does not seem to be trying to overthink the room or over-tell the story. In a myth as renound as Robin Hood one expects that an author would try to reach "deeper" and tell the story in a new form of expression or from a different angle. But Lawhead's storytelling is simple and straightforward. His unique and specific contribution to the story is found in his re-casting the setting into Wales and an earlier time period.
Smart. And interesting.
On the other hand, I was looking for another unique contribution. This could have come from the characters themselves. However, I thought that Lawhead's character development was just a bit too brief. The story moved along, but seemed to come up just a bit short for me. I appreciated the Bran (crf. "Robin Hood") character, and Friar Tuck, but Little John remained relatively static and I'm still left wanting more from Bran and his band of misfits who are wandering about the mysterious woods conjuring up trouble for their enemies in order to win back their lands. There is certainly more room for all this in Scarlet, the next installment. So, I say, "Let fly," Lawhead! Draw it out a bit ala Tolkien!
The real Robin Hood?.......2007-07-31
Who knows? Robin Hood set in 11th century Wales works for me though. Bran ap Brychan is a care free and nere-do-well son of a Welsh kinglet who in a few short and horrendous weeks is orphaned, cheated out of his ancestral kingdom, and thrust into a battle for his life and the iives or his subjects. The Normans have been in England for a little less than a generation and having conquered England set their eyes on Wales. Through treachery, political maneuvering, and conquest they are carving up the eastern portion of the only land left to the original inhabitiants of Britain. Will Bran grow up fast enough to make a difference or will he flee to safety and comfort in the north?
As usual Stephen Lawhead delivers a gripping tale of heroism, moral crisis, and historical and mythical detail that dazzles the imagination. I loved how he wove familiar characters into the new setting bringing life to a story that has been done to death. I look forward to the sequal. 4.5 stars.
Not Lawhead's best .......2007-07-20
I have been a huge lawhead fan for a long time. But it's been a while since I read the first volume in one of his trilogies. I thought this was slow, uninspired and pointless. Of course you were left wanting more, but that's because nothing much happened in this volume. Let's hope the other 2 are better.

The Blood of Dragons Flows through Your Veins
In ages past, dragons ruled supreme. Now their distant scions, the races and individuals who carry their blood, live among the great empires of the world, where they forge their own glorious legacies. You can be among them. Embrace your draconic heritage, and the spoils of the world can be yours!
This supplement for the D&D® game provides detailed information on the psychology, society, culture, behavior, religion, and folklore of the dragonblooded races, including kobolds and half-dragons. This book introduces two new player character races: the dragonborn (existing characters reborn in a new draconic form to combat and destroy the spawn of Tiamat) and the spellscales (artistic, philosophical beings with a penchant for sorcery and a thirst for new experiences). Kobolds get some culture.......2006-10-29
The highlight in this work is the nice elaboration of kobold culture. It helps show why the scaly, little munchkins are so interesting.
The rest of the book is fairly lackluster.
A new look on kobolds.......2006-07-06
This is a great supplement on dragonic characters. While not too impressed with the spellscales and reborn dragon like creatures, I really enjoyed the handling of kobolds and their options. All in all, if you are an avid collector like me you will want this book for your collection. If you are not avid, then I would suggest hoarding your money :)
Give this book a courtesy flush.......2006-03-26
Remember how freakin' cool Lords of Madness was? The aboleth, the illithids, the FLESHWARPER? Even had "Innsmouth look"-style feats, so you could get your Call of Cthulu on with your 7th level druid what with the tentacles and the pseudonatural wild shape and all! MAN, it was COOL! Well, I felt great about finally getting Races of the Dragon, all hoping it would be half as awesome as Libris Mortis or Complete Adventurer and everything.... And... about half-way through this book I felt like I had just found a turd in my green salad.
Everything magical is devoted to the Sword-of-Shanarra ripoff sorceror class, (and not a thing for wizards, HELLO???), the fleshgrafting rules contradict the rules in EVERY other book with Flesh grafting (Fiend Folio, Libris Mortis and Lords of Madness if you're counting), and the new races are just plain STUPID. And I do mean STUPID: "Hey, look at me, I'm a 'spellscale,' I LOOK like a freackin' purple elf with some painted junk on my face." But you know, for those of you who always wanted to play a kobold, now you get your shot, 'cause hey, they rack up in here, man, let me tell you. Oh yeah, and the art's not worth much, either. Don't even bother with the feats, they reek, too; MAYBE the spellcaster tactical feat that lets you do the really obvious "This time for sure!" spell-casting to hit a critter or overcome SR. It doesn't take a whole lotta brainpower to make the sorceror even dumber, and they did that much right.
One good thing, an EXCELLENT thing, in fact: 7 new Power Word Spells. Of course, there are problems here, too. "Power Word: Pain" is, technically speaking, broken as hell: 1st level wizard spell that does 1d6 + 1d6 / round to one target; up to 4d4 rounds depending on current HP much like all Power Word spells. That's only first level if the damage is nonlethal, buddy; 2nd or 3rd at least.
I'll let people take any of them, though, if they also spend spell slots on "Mighty Wallop" and "Greater Mighty Wallop", though -- I kid you not there are spells with those names in there. If you can cast either of them without laughing, you DESERVE "Power Word: Maladroit", too. I guess these guys wanted to make up for the purple painted elves by using a fancy word for "Clumsy." All in all, the weakest effort I've seen out of WotC so far, even worse than Weapons of Legacy. If you want to spend money on a D&D book, get Lords of Madness or Sandstorm, instead.
Races of the Dragon is great but not cream of the crop........2006-03-23
Races of the dragon had some great content. The Dragonborn of Bahamut were great. Great information on kobolds, although if you have dragon or dungeon magazine all of this information kind of feels like it has been covered before. The book is great as a player resource if a DM allows the books use in thier campaign. Overall, it was a great resource for WotC's 'Year of the Dragon' releases.
Who wants a bunch of ugly-looking lizards?.......2006-03-22
As far as style goes, I found this pretty boring from what I saw in the bookstore. Glad I never bought it, Races of Eberron is much better, as it has three great races (fourth isn't so hot) including one Living Construct type.
In fact, from Races of Eberron I made one Changeling Druid who has near complete Cold Adaptation and Heat Adaptation (from environment series), and a Warforged Monk which was effective against lycanthropes.
What can Races of the Dragon possibly give you? Flying creatures? Firebreathing creatures? You could be better off with weaked-down angel or better yet just a birdfolk race (like Raptorans in Races of the Wild, which by the way also has more variety with its Catfolk). As for firebreathing, a feat could probably give you the whole fire-eating/fire-blowing act and save you the whole freakish thing of having weird blood.
