Book Description
If you want to do more than simply use Logic to improve the audio in your video projects-if you want to start actually creating and producing music with it-this Apple-certified guide provides the key. Whether you're a composer, producer, songwriter, engineer, studio programmer or simply want to create and produce pro-quality music in your Logic-based home studio, you'll find all the self-paced, step-by-step instruction you need here to begin creating your audio master works immediately. As both a professional musician and a former employee of eMagic and Apple (the former and current makers of the software), author David Dvorin knows Logic like no one else. Here, he uses project-based tutorials to reveal all of its secrets, including its newest: advanced DSP techniques and the ability to layer MIDI instruments and split channels. In short order you'll be scoring and composing; jamming with Logic's software instruments; employing advanced mixing, editing, and production techniques; and more. A companion CD includes trial Logic plug-in software and the lesson files needed to complete the book's exercises.

So Far, So Good.......2006-11-14
I bought this book primarily to print out charts. The book is very clear on the "how-to-do-it" businesss. As my use of/experience with Logic increases, so does my use of this book. IMHO it's a good investment!
Agree with everyone else - it's great.......2006-10-22
What I particularly like about this book is it's 'real world' feel - Logic Pro has vast functionality, but the author hones in on a few fairly simple ways of doing things, as opposed to going through every feature. I would like to have seen more emphasis on mixing/production, but that's minor - this book can't be everything.
My only beef with with the book is the banal tracks you use with the tutorial. If you are into that kind of go-nowhere take-yourself-too-seriously rockpop that hasn't changed in three decades, fine - but this sort of music doesn't show off Logic's major differentiator - it's synths and the newer styles of music that use them.
Covers everthing.......2006-07-05
This is a goodf book. But the lessions were not as fun as they could have been. But if you want content and relative ease of understanding, it here.
I've read better learning books, though.

Being a long time Logic user, i still happen to not utilize the App to it's fullest. What I like about this book, is the Structure, with the chapters and the Tasks to fulfill. So it get's me closer to a streamlined workflow.
Apple Logic Pro 7 Training Level 1 is Essential knowledge.......2006-03-15
Very good for beginners, or more experienced users who are switching to Logic from another platform. The lessons are very basic, but they provide the backbone of how Logic works, and help speed up the workflow quickly. Recommended.
Book Description
The world's best-selling iPod book is back and fully updated with all the new iPods and features in iTunes 7. This book is so popular because it is a book of a different breed. There are basically two kinds of iPod books: (1) The "tell me all about it" kind, which includes in-depth discussions on compression algorithms, debates about analog vs. digital equalizers; and tutorials on how to export your playlist in Unicode format. (2) There's this book. It's not a "tell me all about it" book, it’s a "show me how to do it" book. Award-winning author Scott Kelby shows you step-by-step how it's all done, using the same casual, plain-English style that has made him one of the world's best-selling technology authors. You'll learn how to do only the most important, most requested, and just plain cool things you're going to want to do with your iPodâso you can start having fun with it today. Right now! Each page covers just one topic, complete with full color photos, making it easy to find just what you're looking for fast. Plus, it shows you how to get the most from the iTunes Store, how to watch movies and TV shows with your iPod, how to integrate your iPod into your car, which iPod accessories are hot, how to use photos with your iPod, and everything you need to know about the latest models in the iPod family, including the iPod Nano and the re-designed, tiny iPod Shuffle! It's all here, in the only book of its kind, and you're gonna love it!

Buy this book if you have an Ipod.......2007-09-09
I have read 5 books on the ipod and Itunes. This book is by far the best at explaining the AMAZING power of Smart Playlists. The examples show you how you can really manage music in a way you had never thought of.
In addition, though I thought I would hate the one page per subject concept in the end I admit it was excellent. Succinct, to the point and very useful.
I reference it all the time to find some of the useful tips.
The iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Store, Third Edition.......2007-08-30
I just received a iPod for father's day. I am retired and when not shooting clay targets I read therefore I immediately downloaded two audiobooks and started reading. I also loaded my favorite song from the fiftys. Since I am a novice I purchased the iPod book and it is everything I need to learn how to use my iPod to the best advantage. I highly recommend this book.
Helpful.......2007-08-19
Very helpful book . Give lots of how to advice but written with humor and not just another boring How to book . The book is easy to read and understand .. you will enjoy it and learn a lot about your ipod without the mannual hassle .
Not a whole lot new here.......2007-08-14
This book is great for the novice user. Lots of good info and easier to use than the Apple website I think. If you are looking for a lot of inside info and hot tips it's not here.
This Book is GREAT!!!.......2007-08-06
This book is GREAT!! For the person that knows nothing about ipods. I knew nothing & I know quite a bit now. It's not for the know-it-all. Just for us tech challenged & you don't have to read the chapters in a row you can look for what you are trying to do and do it. I would recommend this to everyone. It's easy to understand without all that tech stuff. Gives simple examples that you can understand. A # 1 in my book!

Book Description
A visual feast of art, music, and design for devoted fans of the Pet Shop Boys and for anyone interested in popular culture.
The Pet Shop Boys are one of the most influential pop acts ever. With number-one singles such as "West End girls," "It's a sin," and "Go west," numerous gold- and platinum-selling albums such as Please, Actually, and Very, and hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are the most successful British writing duo since Lennon and McCartney.
Spanning the worlds of music, art, film, and theater, the Pet Shop Boys have collaborated with some of the biggest stars of pop, including David Bowie, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, and Tina Turner; composers such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Angelo Badalamenti; and leading artists, designers, and architects such as Yoko Ono, Zaha Hadid, Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Parr, and Sam Taylor-Wood.
Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their first album and coinciding with a new album and a major world tour, this book is a lavish visual retrospective of Tennant and Lowe's career. Every aspect of their work is featured: elegantly designed sleeve artwork and packaging; stills and behind-the-scenes shots from every video, film, concert, and theater show; experimental stage sets and cutting-edge fashion and costume designs; collaborations; publications; merchandising; photo shoots; and even their personally designed invitations and Christmas cards.
Short texts by music journalist Chris Heath and historian Philip Hoare accompany hundreds of illustrations and provide illuminating insights into the genesis and creation of each project. 1955 illustrations, 1727 in color.

Catalogue - A Silver Age.......2007-07-25
With 14 reviews already written, I doubt I can say anything that hasn't already been said. But I will give a short review of my impression of Catalogue.
This book is more like Pet Shop Boys history in pictures. While it's true this is a catalogue of all the album and CD covers. It is also the history of Pet Shop Boys in a brief chronology near the back of the book. It gives a time line of what they were doing on particular dates.
There's also an interview from April 2006 with Neil and Chris by Chris Heath. It also includes a complete in depth discography of all their singles and albums they released.
The silver cover of the book makes a great coffee table attraction. It's a must for any Pethead's collection. It's also a great reference book for new fans of the boys. For those who never subscribed to the fan club will enjoy looking at the various Christmas Cards and cover art of the fan club magazine Literally.
I purchased multiple copies so I could have one on display and to thumb through and one is kept sealed. At this great price, who could resist?
Pet Shop Boys Catalogue
The perfect retrospective of a stellar career...so faf........2007-05-17
You can easily forget that Chris and Neil, Pet Shop Boys have been making fantastic music together for close to 30 years now. This large volume is an authoritative visual representation of what the PSB have done throughout their career. If there is one problem (not really) it would be that since they Boys are still active, the book will be outdated nearly immediately following its publication.
Its fun to see all the international releases, versions, one-off items that have come from their musical output, from singles to albums to videos to other books. Catalogue is comprehensive to say the least. And the photos are many, and all relatively great quality.
This is a true gift to the real PSB fans. It is sort of like your own personal scrapbook if you've been following the Boys through the years or a wonderful collection to introduce newer fans to the career that Neil and Chris have enjoyed. Price seems more than reasonable for the quality of the book. The cover is stunning and makes a great conversation piece for your coffee table. It just sort of begs to be opened with its silvery cover image.
Pet Shop Boys fans should be thrilled that such a volume exists and that the artists have seen fit to offer something of this scale. So many bands, defunct or ongoing seem to spurn their fans requests for such items. In this case, no matter what the intent of the artist--whether purely self indulgence or wanting to give back, the fans who purchase this book are the winners.
Love this book. Love the Boys. And most importantly, Love the music they continue to release. Left to your own devices, you probably will buy this book.
Perfect.......2007-04-09
This book is beautifully packed and chronicles the product of the pet shop boys for the first 20 years. It includes album/single covers, tours, costumes, videos, etc. It is worth every penny and a true companion for any psb fan!
magnificent visual retrospective.......2007-03-09
Pet Shop Boys Catalogue is exactly what it says it is: a stunning and definitive record of every piece of visual material that has accompanied every one of their releases over their 20 plus year recording career. It comes complete with insightful comment from the Boys and the various designers, in particular Mark Farrow with whom they have enjoyed a long-standing, very successful collaboration. Over the years every piece of PSB design has betrayed their design sensibilities and their brilliant understanding of how the visual medium complements the aural when it comes to a full appreciation of their work. And here it is all laid out in full color; in chronological order for us to enjoy. As well as all the CD/LP cover art are stills from videos, intimate looks at each of their concert tour concepts, previous photo books, the fan club magazine, etc. etc. As if we really needed reminding, this collection stands as a testament to how much "art" has always been involved in the Pet Shop Boys' work.

Book Description
A new collection of eye-popping rarities from a defining visual stylist of the 1950s jazz era.
The Curiously Sinister Art of Jim Flora, following hot on the heels of 2004's The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora (which sold out within a matter of months, but which is being reprinted with this latest volume of Floriana) features a wide array of both his commercial work for prestigious record labels of the '40s and rare, personal work that he did solely for himself.
Flora was prolific in his commercial work; he created art privately in equal measureand often with more fiendish pleasure. His style is cartoonish, evoking childhood nostalgia and dereliction of adult responsibility. There are clowns and kitty cats, grinning faces and beaming suns. But Flora did not restrain his darker impulses. His montages are crammed with bullets and knives and fang-baring snakes. Muggers run amok, demons frolic with rouged harlots, and Flora's characters sufferthat is, are afflicted by the artist with severe disfigurement. The banal and the violent often coexist within inches of each other on the canvas. Figures from his burlesque-tinged absurdity "The Rape of the Stationmaster's Daughter" adorn the book cover.
There is also a wealth of 1940s Columbia Records printed matter exhibiting Flora's visual pranks; 1950s RCA Victor-era work; magazine illos, sketchbooks, and prints; 1930s Little Man Press-era drawings; paintings from all decades; photos, and personal keepsakes. All are abundantly represented in The Curiously Sinister Art. Flora's early 1940s musician portraits in Columbia bulletins are raucous and undignified, featuring piss-takes on such legends as Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Gene Krupa. Flora once said he "could not do likenesses"so he conjured outlandish caricatures. His exotic fauna defy logic and the laws of physics. We suspect he often leaned back from the drafting table, examined his work, and issued a macabre chuckle.
Much of the work in the book is light-heartedit's not all Flora 'rassling his demons. But even in his impish renderings, there's something vaguely unsettling in the nuances. His comic grotesqueries echoed, and in many cases foreshadowed, the 1950s Harvey Kurtzman-era MAD magazine, as well as the underground comix of the late 1960s.
When Flora died in 1998, his family gathered his artistic estate and secured it in a storage facility. In late 2005, the heirs allowed Chusid and Economon access to the vault. What they discovered were "lost works""lost" because fans of Flora's LP covers, kid-lit, and Mischievous Art offerings have never seen most of these eye-boggling treasures, which include paintings, watercolors, sketches, woodcuts and all manner of artistic genius.
Flora once said that all he wanted to do was "create a little piece of excitement." He overshot his goal with many of these works.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Mischievous.......2007-05-14
This book goes beyond the first Flora book, The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora. It's wilder, and has a lot of bizarre fine art works by Flora that have not been shown in public. His album covers (featured in the first book) were fun but mild-mannered compared to the reckless abandon on display in The Curiously Sinister Art. It's hard to believe that Flora is the same guy who created so many cuddly children's books in the 1960s and 1970s. The Curiously Sinister book is definitely for ADULTS, or perhaps for overgrown children with a wicked sense of humor.
The curiously fine sinister Art of Jim Flora.......2007-05-12
Not as instructive as the first one, but a very fine book for people who like the wickedly funny and different art of Jim Flora

Customer Reviews:
Mary Plummer Starts the Soundtrack Pro Vehicle.......2007-03-26
Think of this book as driving instruction. Mary Plummer starts the car and now, you get to do the driving. The easy to follow comprehesive lessons in this book are more than enough to get you through the application. And once you have learned to operate the essentials, the rest of the drive is up to you. Turn left, turn right, speed up slow down, well, you get the picture. If you are the imaginative sort, this application can do things to enhance any of your video projects. This program even works for the rythmically challenged!
Bear in mind though, Mary's book is not intended to take you into the depths of award-winning audio post-production. If thats what you're looking for you probably need to seek an internship or hang around your local Guitar Centar. But if you want to learn how to be creative enough with Soundtrack Pro to keep your video viewing audience on the entertainment edge then this well-written book is a must.
I have used Soundtrack to score TV broadcast commercial IDs. Local commercials and proms are next. Shhhh! No one knows except me. Being paid for simply playing around. For more hot and interesting loops, see Douglas Spotted Eagle's book Using Soundtrack: Produce Original Music for Video, DVD, and Multimedia.
A Good Primer, in some respects.......2007-03-24
A word to those who are looking for a comprehensive reference and how-to book for Soundtrack Pro: this is not that book, nor is it intended to be. Instead, this book is a lesson-based primer that quickly takes you through many common tasks that anyone who is starting out in the world of audio Post-production will need to know at some point. The operative word being "quickly". This is NOT an in-depth look at Soundtrack Pro's most important functions, in terms of what they do, how they work and when you want to use one type of functionality over another.
Also, since the one person who took the time to write a real review mentioned it, if you're thinking about owning Soundtrack Pro and looking to see what kind of literature is available first, don't make the mistake of thinking STP is the "Photoshop of audio post-production." It's not, though it shares some common points with the progams that are. If you want the whole ball of wax, Logic Pro or Digital Performer from Motu are the tools you'll want to look at. Like Photoshop, they can perform a huge number of audio post-production and recording taks, but they're also hugely complex. Just depends on what your needs are and how much time you're able to dedicate to learning the toolset.
Overall this book is helpful in understanding how the Soundtrack Pro interface is laid out, and where the basic functional components are located and what they do. However, it's not the kind of book where you can look up a single important topic like "Voiceovers" or "eliminating ambient noise" and find 15 pages throughout the book on ways to accomplish those tasks. IOW, this isn't a reference work you set on your desk and find lots of answers as you go through the program trying to learn new things.
It's more like a 2 day class that covers a variety of basic lessons, compressed into a book.
Brand New + Fast Shipping.......2007-03-10
It was delivered right on time and in brand new condition like advertised.
Apple Pro Training Series: Soundtrack Pro (Apple Pro Training).......2007-01-05
Great Book -- has helped me a lot to understad sound editing.
The Soundtrack Pro Book.......2006-02-13
Mary Plummer, whose fun book on Apple Soundtrack helped walk users through the features of what was once a relatively limited utility, has upgraded the curriculum for the revamped Soundtrack Pro, a tool some have called "the Photoshop of audio". Now, as a Photoshop user myself, I wouldn't say Soundtrack has quite the depth to yet make that claim ... however, Apple has indeed rebuilt it from the ground up into what is leaps and bounds beyond the clip/loop manager it had been before. And Ms. Plummer, who has seen it grow each step of the way, has penned the best (if not only, at this time) source with which to learn its awesome capabilities.
After a quick first chapter on getting familiar with the interface (a working knowledge of Mac OS-X is essential), the reader gets up and running with projects involving sound design for a video trailer and a suspense scene, performing in depth waveform surgery (one of the key new features of Soundtrack Pro), editing audio tracks, recording and mixing audio, performing refinements and adding effects to a multi-track recording, and finally integrating it with the other tools of Final Cut Studio. That covered all the bases with this user and, as with her previous volume, kept it fun and inspired creative experimentation. It is always refreshing to learn from an author who is both an expert and an artist herself.
If you have been working with Apple's Pro Apps for any amount of time, learning Soundtrack Pro on your own isn't really rocket science, and if you just use it for loops and sound design with Final Cut Pro/Express you probably don't even need this book. But it is capable of a lot more on its own, and if you find yourself wanting to get deeper into its uses and exploit Soundtrack Pro for all it's worth, you'll find this Apple Pro Training title a well-written, invaluable, enjoyable and fast-moving route to audio enlightenment.
Thanks again Mary!

Old Fader and Knob Guy.......2007-06-01
Man, I miss my racks of gear! Consequently, the transition to computer software recording was something that I avoided like the plague. When I discovered Reason and it's user interface (gotta love that rack) it seemed like an answer to my prayers. This book eased me right into the Reason 3.0 program. It actually makes it do-able, even for an old fader fart like me! Snatch this one up before they're out of print.
Great book for a total beginner!.......2007-05-12
I'm a musician of 20 years who has finally entered the world of virtual instruments (with some hesitation I must admit) and I must say that the Reason 3 for Windows & Macintosh book really helped me overcome those fears if you will. I'm not much for manuals because most, as most musicians know, speak about the product as if you've already used it and have prior knowledge about it. The Reason 3 book, however, puts everything on an easy to understand level and the pictures do help a lot but would be more helpful if some were in color.
In a nutshell, I cracked open the book and fired up my Mac on a Saturday morning and 3-4 hours later I was able to go in, pull up what I wanted and make some nice tracks. I'm still working on the mastering and some other odds and ends but I'm confident that this book will definitely get me through with flying colors! BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!
Reason for Hip Hop.......2007-01-09
I bought this for my son who has a small home studio.
He had the software but the manual was limited. He described
this book as the ulitmate tool. It revealed all the true capabilities
of the software. He said the software is useless without this book.
It does the job but I want more.......2006-08-23
If you a looking for a fast guide so that you can produce simple music withou much thinking, try this one. I used it ans it gave me some insights, but I really missed more in-depth explanations of key concepts, and more explanations about the consequences of my tweaks. The tutorials as much more "do this and then do that", than "do this, and this will happen, otherwise, this will happen because of this", which I prefer.
I am now using the Reason Power! books, and it seems much more complete and satisfying for my needs. I like to understand everything I am doing to achieve a certain result, so that I can use this knowledge in order to do different stuff from that same process. Reaso Power! gives me more of that than this VQSG.

Real Sound Synthesis/a review.......2007-01-05
One of the best volumes I've come across in the field of sound synthesis on personal computers. Provides a solid introduction to this field for those who wish to create sound on a PC (as opposed to play back previously- recorded sound).
Excellent book on an under-served subject.......2006-02-18
This is not a book that introduces and uses signal processing concepts for the sake of itself. Instead, the goal of the book is to create sounds, learn the tools and theory behind creating such sounds, and grasp the essentials of many sophisticated physical modeling concepts in particular. The book is quite thin, but don't let this fool you. The author chose to leave out quite a few details so that this did not turn into another 1000 page treatise on computer music. Thus some basic topics in signals, systems, and filter design are not fleshed out to their fullest extent. To this end, the book has an extensive reference section so that if you are unfamiliar with a particular physics or DSP topic, you can research it yourself.
Chapter 1 briefly establishing the fundamentals of digital audio, and includes an introduction to the basics of quantization, compression, and Pulse-Code Modulation (PCM) sampling. Chapter 2 investigates sound synthesis starting with wavetable synthesis. In chapter 3, digital filters are introduced. Included is a concise but clear introduction to Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems, convolution, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters, Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters, and Z transforms. The chapter culminates in an introduction to the BiQuad filter.
Chapter 4, which deals with modal synthesis, acts as a stepping-stone to the frequency domain, leading to chapter 5's discussion of the Fourier Transform. This chapter examines Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), fast convolution, and Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), and ends with examples of applications.
Chapters 6, 7, and 8 delve deeper into synthesis/analysis concepts such as Linear Predictive Coding (LPC), spectral modeling, additive/subtractive synthesis, noise signals, and inharmonicity, using the frequency domain techniques learned in previous chapters. You'll hardly turn a page without an accompanying picture or block diagram, a particularly valuable feature of this book.
Chapter 9 explores the physical modeling concepts of string vibrations and stiff bars. Modeling algorithms are introduced using basic physics perspectives centered around the familiar string, mass, and damper paradigms first introduced in chapter 4. Here again, rather than bombarding the reader with tons of equations, Mr. Cook explains ideas mainly through diagrams, sound examples, and block diagrams, which is very helpful for the software implementation of algorithms. The ready-to-compile C++ code for this section included on the CD-ROM provide models of a plucked string (Plucked.cpp), a mandolin (Mandolin.cpp), and a bowed string (Bowed.cpp).
In Chapter 11, Tubes and Air Cavities, the author introduces more models while leaving detailed mathematical derivations of equations for the appendix. He concludes chapter 11 with "Building and Blowing a Bottle Model", and includes code and sound examples, as usual. Going into chapter 12, more complex, higher dimensional models are introduced, with the traditional mass-spring model in the context of a meshed membrane starting off the chapter.
Chapter 13 introduces modeling and synthesizing particle interaction. Some of the topics covered include Formant Wave Functions (FOFs) for voice synthesis, single particle models, multi-particle systems, and statistical multi-particle systems such as a simple maraca model, implemented in less than 30 lines of C code with an accompanying block diagram.
Chapter 14 deals with the subtleties of exciting and controlling sound models. For example, Mr. Cook discusses the differences between exciting a string with a plectrum as opposed to using the fleshy part of the thumb. He also shows some fascinating effects of the striking conditions of the Tibetan prayer bowl, which exhibits very different spectra as a function of strike-direction while keeping strike-point constant. Other topics discussed include bowing, scraping, and frictional issues in synthesis. MIDI, OSC (Open Sound Control), and other standards for sound and multimedia control are also briefly examined.
Chapter 15 walks the reader through a complete system called PhOLISE (Physically Oriented Library of Interactive Sound Effects) that could possibly be applied to areas such as gaming, animation, and sound effects in film production. The five sections of the appendix go into greater detail regarding proofs, derivations, and properties of topics such as DFT properties, zero-padding, proof of fast convolution, and ideal string behaviors.
After you grasp the contents of this book, you might want to read "The Physics of Musical Instruments" and use some of Mr. Cook's techniques to synthesize the numerical models explained in that book.
Wonderful long-term goal, but not with today's hardware.......2004-05-13
"Real Sound Synthesis for Interactive Applications" by Perry R. Cook describes elementary and advanced techniques to simulate the audio components of dynamic systems using physics. While the book is not specifically directed toward game development, the application to game development is clear. The book's organization of the major themes covered is easily to follow through three sections that detail digital audio, sound modeling, and simulation of real world instruments. The book spans sixteen chapters and appendices totaling 248 pages.
The first section (chapters 1-3) defines digital audio, compression, wave synthesis, and simple filtering techniques. The chapters form the foundation for the later sections and define the common asset formats and techniques currently used in games. Cook emphases that key components of sound manipulation are the sampling rate and quantization of the source audio. The text demonstrates how sounds with higher sampling rates allow for greater manipulation with fewer artifacts but incur a greater computational cost.
The second section (chapters 4-8) introduces sound modeling through simplified physical systems, such as an ideal spring, and Fourier series equations. While an understanding of college physics and calculus is helpful (especially if you'd like to code these methods), the book doesn't require it or bog down in theory or mathematical proofs. (For those interested in the details, they are provided in the appendices). The concepts described in this section are critical in creating computer sound models that represent real world objects.
The last section (chapters 7-16) provides physics equations that allow for the simulation of real world instruments (string instruments, tubes, and multi-dimensional objects). Each chapter describes a different system based on Fourier construction, filtering, and physics-based equations. It's the heart of the book and most interesting. The background in the two previous sections is essential to fully grasp the concepts Cook defines here.
Throughout each chapter, Cook couples clear concise writing with a touch of humor and illustrative diagrams. Cook provides a good initial foundation as the topics covered gradually build in complexity. The clean organizational layout made it easy for me to refer back to previous sections when I felt the need. In many cases, however, I found the writing to be a little too condensed and wished for a paragraph describing a concept rather than the sentence provided. Cook does supply references at the end of each chapter for those readers seeking additional detail.
The book also includes a CD containing audio samples of the topics discussed throughout the book. While reading the book, it was useful to be able to hear the point or technique made in the text. The CD also contains Cook's sound synthesis toolkit and several examples of instruments highlighted in the last section.
Unfortunately in current development, real-time sound synthesis in games has a limited place. Due to the complex calculations of Fourier series, fast digital signal processor chips are required to simulate the audio effects without impacting the rest of the game. Minimally, filters and other simple routines outlined in the book can be written for target hardware to accomplish specialized effects but this is nothing radically new.
However, Cook's research in simulating audio is extremely exciting. During the calculation of an object's dynamic behavior (such as collision response, striking, falling, moving, etc.) a minimal additional amount of time can be spent to determine the audio effects. According to Cook's findings, this amount is generally less than 5% of the total time required to simulate an object's physical behavior. Admittedly, these calculations are on the order of minutes versus milliseconds but eventually Moore's Law will catch up and simplifications will allow unparalleled audio effects in conjunction with physical simulation.
Developers and sound designers interested in the math and physics of creating real-time sounds should pick up this book. Those interested in a fascinating look at the mechanisms of dynamically producing sound might also want to give it a read provided it's with the understanding that the direct applicability to games is at least few years away.
It's a lot more than a cook book.......2002-08-30
Are you a pretty good C++ programmer? Have you ever wanted to have your computer output sounds like footsteps or musical instruments that (a) sound real and (b) are continuously responsive to the user's control? Did you discover that it was basically impossible to do it by stitching together prerecorded samples, and you couldn't think of any other way to do it?
If so, Perry Cook has written just the book you have been looking for. In 250 pages, Cook explains everything, from the basics of digital filtering to the major alternatives for generating sounds: additive and subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, and -- the real focus of the book -- physical modeling. Not only that, the accompanying CD-ROM includes lots of sound examples and the Synthesis ToolKit -- a pretty much platform-independent set of C++ classes and algorithms for writing your own code.
Not everything is perfect. Just as the first version of any program contains some bugs, the first printing of any book that uses mathematics contains some errors. In particular, typos in Appendix A could be very frustrating if this is your first exposure to Fourier analysis. (You might want to check Cook's web site for a promised list of errata and code updates.) And don't let the fact that the book is short, attractively produced, very well organized, unusually clear, and entertainingly written lead you to believe that you can master it in a weekend. Although Cook tries his best to make the underlying mathematics unintimidating, there is no getting around the fact that there are some rather deep concepts from wave physics and signals-and-systems theory behind what he has to say.
The good news is that the effort is richly repaid. Not only will you be able to write programs that can generate controllable sounds in real time, but you will develop insight into how physical instruments produce their distinctive sounds, and you will understand the basics of both the standard and the most advanced techniques that have been developed to model them. Highly recommended.
Not just another digital music book...........2002-08-23
This book is useful, enlightening, and fun. It covers many cutting-edge topics in lucid fashion, topics that can only be found otherwise in academic journals. The computer code (in the book and on the CD-ROM) is an invaluable resource for the ambitious reader, who can actually try out or modify the techniques. The CD-ROM also provides examples of these new techniques in action. Finally, the author's sense of humor comes through often (this is not a stiff, boring book!).
As a "digital-sound-artist" and someone who teaches this stuff at the university level, I highly recommend this book not only to those who want to learn about the most recent work going on in sound synthesis, but to those who want another perspective on more familiar topics (like the basics of PCM, fourier analysis, basic digital filtering, etc....).

Customer Reviews:
Good but OUTDATED - please save your money.......2007-08-15
This book was written in 2003, and whereas it gives a pretty solid THEORETICAL overview of using ProTools in film, video and multimedia settings, and some historical background on audio/video synchronization, it is not at all useful for hands-on modern day applications. Personally, I have resorted to online / streaming instruction (or interactive DVD instruction) at any number of places on the web (search for pro tools tutorials).
Fantastic.......2007-01-12
This book was highly recommended to me by a Supervising Sound Editor and Mixer working in North Hollywood as the best book on Pro Tools. I would have to agree.
From the very, very basic, to the extremely detailed, it will cover just about anything you need.
I am a student currently studying Sound Editing, and I have recommended it to not only my peers, but also my instructors.
Stop thinking considering other books, buy this one.
I also highly recommend The Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound, by David Lewis Yewdall M.P.S.E.
A practical and "user-friendly" introduction to Pro Tools.......2003-11-13
A practical and "user-friendly" introduction to Pro Tools, whether by itself or in conjunction with compatible softwares such as QuickTime, Pro Tools For Video, Film, And Multimedia by Ashley Shepherd is an excellent and very nicely organized guide to the features of Pro Tools software, including how to make optimal use of it when working on the phases of a multimedia soundtrack project. Meticulous and down-to-earth examples and suggestions make Pro Tools For Video, Film, And Multimedia a first-rate and highly recommended guide for music engineers making the transition into multimedia, as well as independent filmmakers doing their post-production in-house; web designers adding audio content to their web pages; musicians composing for film, TV, or the Internet.
A must-have for budding recordists!.......2003-08-25
This is a terrific guide that covers all the basics of how to set up a ProTools audio system to for syncing and mixing to picture. Whether you're doing a soundtrack for a low-budget film, amateur DV video, or a big-budget TV show or feature film, there's a lot of information covered here. And it's much more thorough than the Digidesign manuals, and deals with "real world" situations that come up on a daily basis for anybody in the business.
The book is not intended for a ProTools novice -- you'll need to already have a reasonable grasp of all the basics before you dive into Shepherd's book -- but the information covered there is concise, to the point, and best of all, it's very current (at least as of Summer 2003).
I'd consider this book to be a must-have for anyone considering doing any mixing of sound effects, dialog, and/or music to video or film. Along with David Yewdall's excellent "Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound" (which covers a much broader scope of information), both books should be on the shelves of anybody in the movie/TV sound business. Highly recommended.
