Book Description

"George," he said, "I don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a chap who's come in with a tape of a group he runs. They haven't got a recording contract, and I wonder if you'd like to see him and listen to what he's got?""Certainly," I said, "I'm willing to listen to anything. Ask him to come and see me." "O.K., I will. His name's Brian Epstein...."All You Need Is Ears is the story of George Martin, the man who spotted the Beatles' talent, who recorded and produced them from the start, and who brought their musical ideas to life. In this witty and charming autobiography, he describes exactly what it was like to work in the studio with the Beatles--from the first audition (and his decision to scrap Pete Best on drums) to the wild experimentation of Sgt. Pepper (complete with sound effects, animal noises and full orchestras in evening dress at the direct request of Paul McCartney). This is a singular look at the most important musical group of all time, and how they made the music that changed the world: No other book can provide George Martin's inside look at their creative process, at the play of genius and practical improvisation that gave them their sound; it is an indispensable read for Beatle lovers and anyone interested in the music world.

Just to point out --

The biography posted is for George Martin, the sci-fi writer,
who isn't the same person (as far as I know!) as the Beatles'
producer. FYI.

3 out of 5 stars A good book that should have been great.......2007-03-05

George Martin was the 5th Beatle. He gave them their first break after they had been turned down by all the labels. Without the break he gave them, Martin muses that the Beatles may have just given it up and gone their separate ways. Apparently George Martin was the only one around that was willing to take a chance on these scruffs from Liverpool that would chane the world.

It seems that Paul was the one Beatle that could have made it on his own, but if not as on of The Beatles, then as what? Could he have been a backup for Tony Sheridan, or a bass player for Little Richard? Thankfully, we will never know. Would the other Beatles have likely gotten working class jobs, and/or just self-destructed? As always, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It is hard to imagine a world without the Beatles, but that just underscores the importance of George Martin in giving them their lucky break. George Martin played all positions with the Beatles, except for vocalist. He produced, directed, arranged, and even played piano and harpsichord on many records. He brought that classical influence of strings and horns into the Beatles music, starting with Yesterday. Any die-hard fan will want to read this book, however, beware: it is diluted a bit with stories about other recording artists that have little relation to the reason why I bought the book in the first place, i.e., The Beatles. Nevertheless, it does have a few anecdotes that have not been seen elsewhere, so yes, it is worth buying and reading. You can always skip the parts that you don't care about.

George Martin is very informative on the evolution of multitrack recording technology, so that should be of interest to anybody that wonders how they got all those "layer cakes" out of the primitive equipment of the day.

I enjoyed the book immensely, but I think George Martin could have done better given his intimate knowledge of one of the greatest cultural phenomena of all time. Sometimes he seems a little aloof in the book, as if he hardly cares, but it is probably just old-school English understatement at its best, or maybe a futile attempt to downplay that he is probably their biggest fan, if not one of their oldest.

On a side note, it is too bad that George Martin was never rewarded financially (at least up to 1979 when this book was published) on a level that would have been commensurate with the important role he played in not only discovering, but also developing the greatest band of all time. As always, the Beatles come off as cheap, uncharitable and self-indulgent on this score. As the book explains, Martin was offered some royalties under the table, (as a kickback from an unscrupulous publisher) but he never compromised his ethics. Eventually I'm sure he made a nice living through his long association with the Fab 4, but not what one might expect, according to the book, at least up to 1979. A lot has happened in the financial world of The Beatles since this book was written, including the huge Vegas production of Love, in which Martin played an integral role along with his son, Giles. It's nice to see a music producer that is more driven by quality and innovation than the lowest common demoniators. I wish we had more like him.

My rating says 3 stars, but that was a mistake. I really gave it a 4.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles.......2007-01-18

A must read for anyone involved in the making of music as it pertains to production and recording. It however exhibits George Martins conservative nature and is someone bias from his perspective. A much superior book is Here,There, and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick. It is the same subject matter but much more detailed and objective.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but not all that I wanted.......2007-01-05

I wish there were more technical specifics in the descriptions of various sessions. Sir George gets you into Abbey Road studio #2 and lets you know about his experiences with various artists.

5 out of 5 stars George Martin REVEALED!.......2006-09-03

This is a truly amazing book. I had just finished reading "Here, There and Everywhere" by Geoff Emerick (the Beatles recording engineer) and decided I wanted to know more about George Martin, their producer. It was a great decision because the introspect gained from reading both of these books together tells a big picture that I before could only guess at.

George's personality really comes out in this book and it makes it far easier to understand what went on during the Beatles many many recording sessions. It has been said that the producer is a major contributer to the outcome of any project and this book definately confirms and educates about that process.

It is an easy read and the edition that I purchased has fairly decent sized type and makes it easy on the eyes. It is a paperback and tucks easily into your daybag or briefcase for those times when you can read a few minutes - but if you are like I am - you may devour the whole thing in one seating!

The early life of George Martin is also detailed in this book with it's different perspective of growing up in Britain. I had no idea that George Martin was in pop music groups as he was growing up and that came as a terrific surprise. I might have known, though.

The classical side of George Martin comes out strong also. This came into very significant play as he produced the Beatles.

Great book. Don't hesitate to buy this!

Book Description

The national best-selling autobiography of Bill Graham, the colorful, larger-than-life architect of the modern concert industry.

As a child, Bill Graham fled Europe to escape Hitler's armies. He grew up on the streets of New York and in the dining rooms of the hotels in the Catskills. After failing as an actor, he headed for San Francisco right before the Summer of Love where he founded the Fillmore and launched the rock icons of a generation--Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, the Grateful Dead, and more. He was a complex, caring, compassionate whirlwind of energy who rock stars either loved--or hated.

In his own voice and those of the people who knew him--Jerry Garcia, Keith Richards, Grace Slick, Ken Kesey, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, and Carlos Santana--we hear Bill's story as well as the scoop on the major events in rock for more than three decades, ending with his tragic death in a 1991 helicopter crash. Gritty, moving, funny, and always fascinating, Bill Graham Presents is the inside story of the explosive and unforgettable man who created the business of rock.

5 out of 5 stars Great, interesting book.......2007-04-03

This book is a little weird (to me) in concept but it works out really well in the end. The book goes from Bill's early days in Nazi Germany all the way to his death with no major stone left unturned. Lots of great stories with very little in the way of punches being pulled. I mean Bill really tells you what he is thinking. Very uncensored. Covers the drugs and the behind scenes stuff with no BS involved. Shows the guy for who he was, warts and all and lets him and the people he is talking about retort one another which I thought was weird in a good way. This book is of great interest to anyone who has probably gotten to this point in reading reviews. If you are interested in this type of subject then this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-03-24

It's a good insight into the rock scene back in the 60's and 70's. A must read for anyone who likes classic rock.

5 out of 5 stars The Production Manager king.......2006-12-21

This book is structured so that as Bill Graham comments on different times of his life, he allows the persons hes speaking of to comment in the next paragraph. This makes for some very interesting reading. Grham discusses his time in Korea and killing the enemy. This experience allows him to have an abundant amount of courage when it comes to dealing with band managers in the future. Bill discusses Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Zeppelin, the Stones, J Geils Band, Santana, the Who and all the tense dealings with each of these personalities. This book could have benefitted from better pictures of the bands. Thats my only critical comment.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Perspective On The Fillmore Era.......2005-03-31

Bill Graham is the rock promoter most famous for operating the leading rock and roll theaters of the late sixties and early seventies, including the original Filmore auditorium in San Francisco, the Fillmore East in New York, and the Fillmore West, (a different building in San Francisco.) The Fillmore period was sort of a golden age of rock and roll. Graham was able to present virtually all the cutting edge bands of the time, including some acts, like Santana and the Allman Brothers, before they even had their first record out. Rock and roll shows had never received the kind of attention to detail and respect for performers and audiences that Graham brought to the Fillmores. Graham presented a variety of music, including blues and jazz, although the headliners were almost always top draw rock and roll acts. Many artists took advantage of the Fillmore's reputation to record live albums there. In fact, according to this book, 58 albums were recorded at the Fillmores and 17 of them were certified gold. The Fillmores also became gathering places for the music industry. Graham was more than just a first hand witness to this era, he helped to create it. The Fillmore sections of this book are a fascinating examination of how the Fillmore came into existence, how the musicians felt about playing for Bill Graham, how the booking policy of the Fillmore evolved, and finally why Graham closed the Fillmores at the peak of the their success.

In addition to Graham's own memories, there are memories of his contemporaries as well which round out the story. Italics are overused in attempt to make the writing sound like a transcription of someone talking, but this is only a minor irritation. Consider the following quote from Pete Townsend which is taken from the book: "(Graham) gave us dignity. We felt we weren't the pop plebes we had been when we went out with Herman's Hermits and we were told to shut up and get in the back of the bus. We were dignified people. We were artists."

Graham's opinions are fun to read. Who was the best act he ever saw? (Otis Redding) Who was the biggest pain in the neck? (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young).

Of secondary importance, but still fascinating, an added bonus really, are Graham's memories of his childhood escape from Nazi Germany. Most biographies are boring when the subject's childhood is discussed, but in this case, Graham's family was broken up during the Nazi era. Graham was a small boy and the only member of his family to escape to the United States. He was reunited with his surviving sisters after the war.

OK, here's the deal... Are you thinking of getting into the music business? Trying to get your band signed? Becoming a songwriter? This book will discourage you beyond description, so read at you own risk. However it will allow you to go into the business of music with your eyes wide open. A good history lesson of the deal makers that launched rock and roll, R & B, pop, disco, etc. All happening before the digital age. Do you have a kid that wants to be the next American Idol? Want to discourage them? Get them this book!

I read it a while ago and have used the knowledge to my benefit. Though I haven't made a fortune writing music, I have managed to keep my songs mine and make vacation money.

5 out of 5 stars The Dirty Truth About an Equally Dirty Business.......2007-06-08

Mr. Dannen has written a book that could have been written by any one of two dozen people. However, the others would have incriminated themselves, or wound up in a Nevada corn field with a bullet in their heads!!

Naming names and identifying specific dates, Mr. Dannen tells the majority of the truth about how things really work behind the scenes to make a song a "HIT". From the early days of "legal payoffs" to the "payola" scandals of the late 50s and early 60s, to the line item "marketing" expenses that major labels right off every day to cover the payments made to the corporate radio stations.

This book helps identify why great music never makes it to "Top 40" or CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio). Why great artists are left in the dark while "Casper Milktoast" acts seem to get played 12 times during drive time!!!

If you want to read a fact-filled book about how the music business and hit radio have created such an insestuous relationship, then buy this book. It is full of thrills, fear, anger, humor, big names and bigger deals. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars MICROCOSM OF AMERICA?.......2006-08-07

This book shook the music world when it was first released, which was when I first read it. I just recently picked it up and read it again, and it was still an equally mind-blowing experience.
What was with those guys? Why did they feel the need to rip off every artist to the maximum possible extent? Couldn't they still have been just as powerful, just as legendary, and very nearly as wealthy, if they'd paid the artists the few pennies per record or airplay that would have been their rightful compensation for creating the music that rocked the world and brought billions of international dollars into American coffers?
Whatever happened to Dennis Waitley and his "win-win" scenarios? You don't hear much about him any more. Perhaps his concepts were too anathematic to the American mindset. Whatever happened to the concepts of "noblesse oblige," and "from those who have received much, much is expected"? Whatever happened to "a rising tide lifts all boats"? Whatever happened to the Magna Carta, the Renaissance, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and all the other movements that raised the world to the dizzying heights it once achieved?
I guess they've been replaced by that all-American concept, "whoever dies with the most toys wins."
As we watch the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and rising fuel prices cause the American dream to recede into the sunset while our beloved representative republic slips back toward medieval fuedalism; as we watch American corporations, once looted from without by corporate raiders, now being looted from within by greedy and/or incompetent executives with golden parachutes while their stockholders, employees and retirees have their lives decimated, we can at least hope that what we do here will stand forever as an example to the rest of the world of how NOT to live.
Osama bin Laden, in his famous "letter to America," called us the worst civilization the world has ever seen, wallowing in decadence and depravity and calling it the height of individual freedom. Could he have been right?
This book gives the reader a valuable opportunity to take a close-up look at one of the foundation pillars of our economy and our culture, and witness the process by which America is rotting from within.

Having worked in the music buisness for 25+ years, I must agree with most that is written in this great book. As crazy as it was, it was a great buisness to be in if you love music.I highly recommend getting this book & holding on for one crazy ride!

This is a very eye-opening book, about how money and drugs changes hands to determine which new artists get played on the radio and who doesn't. There's really no other book out there that covers this topic. Written by an industry insider.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Fails to deliver on its excellent thematic promise.......2005-05-12

The book's stated theme, "inside the great recording studios," is a tantalizing one. Unfortunately the authors rarely deliver the reader inside the temples themselves. Instead, they spend an inordinate amount of text rehashing introductory material about artists, songs, labels, musical genres and scenes. It's not necessarily uninteresting, but it leaves readers in the lobby, rather than actually taking them into the studio.

Worse, the writing is hugely uneven. The chapter on Atlantic is just that, a chapter on the Atlantic label, with tidbits about the studios they used. The chapter on Columbia, on the other hand, does a nice job of communicating the label's producers' emotional attachment to their studios. The text itself ranges from well-written to hyperbolic ("It is indisputable: there is no one label that had as much impact on the development of rock from the 1950s to the 1970s as Chess.") and overly clever ("Everyone wanted in, and the [Chess] brothers, refashioned as record men, kept adding more pawns to the Chess set.").

What this book does accomplish is a grounding of hit songs at their physical points of creation. It untangles the juxtaposition of Top-40 radio and strips away the music industry's placelessness by re-contextualizing songs with the writers, producers, engineers and musicians who created them. Who knew that Eric Clapton's "Layla" was recorded in Florida, within the same studios that reverberated with Hank Ballard's "The Twist," The Eagles' "Hotel California," and The Bee Gees "How Deep is Your Love?"

The book's photos provide intimate views of studios in use (not to mention, under construction), it's a shame that the accompanying text isn't as fully detailed on the technical and artistic inner-workings of these "temples of sound."

5 out of 5 stars It's a FUN Read.......2005-01-25

With all the documentaries out there today, it's sometimes easy to forget the expression "The Joy of Music". Thankfully, Mr. Clark stays away from trying to overanalyze every note and decision, and at times delights in the instantaneous, spur of the moment happenings that create great hits. (ie.,How the song Hold On, I'm Coming by Sam & Dave was written in about 30 minutes by Isaac Hayes! Will never hear that song the same way again.)

Each chapter is devoted to one particular studio, and some of the giants who recorded there, what gave the studio that particular sound, but more often than not, what accidental happening's created the soundtrack to so many of our lives.

With each studio covered in only a chapter, there are probably thousand's of untold stories that go along with each studio, however once again Mr. Clark hits on the highlights, and does a good job of figuring out what the reader really wants to know.

After reading a chapter, found myself pulling out various cd's of the respective studio's and enjoying them all over again.

4 out of 5 stars Those were the days.......2003-12-30

"Temples of Sound" is an interesting and inspiring look at some popular American recording studios, mostly from the late 1950s and early 60s, but with a few nods to the later sixties and early 70s. (Sorry, no British studios. Abbey Road, Olympic, and Trident spring to mind - anyone want to write one?) Each chapter picks a particular studio (Sun, Chess, Motown, Western, Columbia, etc.) and gives a brief overview of its history (down to the present day; alas many of the studios no longer exist), its features, and the people who made it special, both artists and engineers. Indeed, the authors have interviewed a number of studio owners and engineers, which adds much to the text. The book certainly succeeds in being evocative - these were the days when echo chambers could be someone's bathroom, when everything was recorded on glorious analog tape, when most basic tracks were done live all in the same room with sonic leakage, and cigarette smoking in the studio was glamorous. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, John Coltrane, the Doors, and other greats make walk-on appearances, and there are good photographs of many of them at work. (Actually, I could have used even more photos.) The book also rescues from relative obscurity one Bill Putnam, who apparently designed many of the sweetest-sounding rooms in the country. Often there are anecdotes about the history of studio owners and their labels, which are interesting, though one might hope for even more anecdotes about the artists and recording sessions. I found myself wishing for a little bit more technical information too, about how each room was set up and what specific gear they had, though some of this is mentioned briefly. And, of course, they can't cram every studio in here - for instance, there is no chapter on Muscle Shoals. However, the book ends with a nice discography of tracks to hunt down and listen to, each associated with one of the studios, and all of which I want to listen to after reading about these places' heydays. I find this book fascinating for what it does tell us, and inspiring in its depiction of an era when artistic talent, engineering skill, and human warmth made sometimes low-tech rooms into hallowed cathedrals of sound. A good gift for anyone interested in recording, or in the 50s-60s period.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, not great.......2003-09-23

I just can't muster the enthusiasm of other reviewers for this book. Perhaps most interesting and informative are the stories of how some of the best recordings of the golden days of analog were made on a shoe string, over garages on third hand equipment. There are some insights into what made some of the studios sound unique.

The early chapters dwell lovingly on some details of the lives of the produces, engineers and some of the artists. But by the end the facts are marshaled and rushed past, leaving the reader with the distinct impression that they were included so as not to offend some egos or just to drop some names. In some cases the fact that the producers were flat out ignorant of music, rather unlikable individuals and driven by the Wall-Street motives of fear and greed are all too clear, but left between the lines.

All in all the book it left me with more questions than answers about the recording process. A decent compendium of facts about who did what when and where with a smattering of favorite artists and a few pictures to keep pop audiences happy. The authors are weakest when the crass business of the music industry intrudes into their picture of the studio as a crucible of pop art. I'd rather have more detail (even if it hurts) about a few studios or a focus on just a few top engineers and specific recording sessions.

5 out of 5 stars Really interesting!.......2003-07-26

Great book, especially after recently seeing the movie, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." A must-read for any musicologist, especially one who grew up with all of these tunes blasting from the car radio on WKNR, WXYZ and CKLW back in the 60's. And I was AMAZED by the Rudy Van Gelder story, being a fan of traditional jazz (Coltrane, et al.)

Even you fans who weren't yet born when some of these stars had already begun passing away will appreciate the "inside stories" behind much of the music you still hear today.

The first-ever in-depth look at one of the greatest business stories of our time

A true heavyweight in the star-studded world of media entertainment, Robert Johnson, the creator of Black Entertainment Television (BET), turned a revolutionary idea and a $15,000 personal loan into a multibillion-dollar empire. As one of the richest black men in America as well as its first black billionaire, Johnson's success with BET has been a social examination into both race and capitalism with his many detractors holding him to a higher standard of cultural responsibility from which his competitors are exempt. Engaging and informative, The Billion Dollar BET skillfully examines Johnson's humble origins, his dogged and inspired climb to the top, and his often controversial tenure at the helm of one of the most influential media outlets in the country. This book takes readers on a fascinating journey, beginning with Johnson's days in rural Illinois, his graduate life at Princeton University, and his role as a cable industry lobbyist on Capitol Hill. The Billion Dollar BET also details how Johnson courted media titans such as John Malone and Sumner Redstone and convinced them to play vital roles in BET's success. Readers will also learn how BET quickly spread across the country and took on far greater social significance than even Johnson ever imagined. Filled with revealing anecdotes and never-reported details of Johnson's life, his business philosophy, and the world inside BET, this story will teach readers even more about business, race, and themselves.

4 out of 5 stars BOB JOHNSON A MAN WITH ATTITUDE AND POWER.......2007-05-14

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT BET FOUNDER BOB JOHNSON. IT WAS A GLIMPSE INTO THE LIFE OF A POWERFUL MAN AND HIS RISE TO FORTUNE AND FAME. HOWEVER I WISH MR. JOHNSON WOULD WRITE HIS OWN BOOK. SO THE READER COULD HAVE A CLOSER INSIGHT TO HIS FEELINGS REGARDING THE REASONS WHY BET DIDNT DEVELOP INTO A MORE USEFUL TOOL FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY. WAS THE REASON MR. JOHNSON'S NEED FOR POWER AND MONEY FORGETTING CONTENT ?

5 out of 5 stars Even-Handed Saga about America's Leading Black Entrepreneur.......2006-03-22

The fascinating rags-to-riches story of Robert L. Johnson, the U.S.'s first black billionaire, has all the makings of a great novel: personality, determination, opportunity, scandal, backstabbing and tremendous success. Against all odds, this child of a poor, black rural family became a media pioneer and a very wealthy man. A visionary, he started Black Entertainment Television (BET) with $15,000, four employees, and incredible energy and ambition. Judging by the amount of money he made, his success is clear, although biographer Brett Pulley says his track record in social responsibility is muddier. We recommend Pulley's remarkably even-handed, in-depth portrayal of this enigmatic, controversial, often hard-hearted mogul.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story on Robert Johnson and BET's 25-year success.......2006-03-05

I first saw Black Entertainment Television in 1984. I went, Is this really happening? Will anybody watch it? Over two decades later, more than 80 million viewers that watch it sometimes and being sold to Viacom yet keeping its integrity, it's a well-watched network. I'm still speechless that it has succeeded despite the darts thrown from media critics. I have seen its changes, good shows being taken off and replaced by something else, but it has become a better product with its programming lately. I couldn't believe that Video Soul got cancelled and they didn't let Donnie Simpson know. Robert Johnson saw the vision of this network for 25 years and he deserves a lot of the credit. He surely saved his money to become the billionnaire that he's become. BET is more than its endless showing of music videos, movies, reruns and the popular 106 and Park, it has news programs and shows that help improve the livelihood of African-Americans everywhere. And it's gone from having most shows shown in Washington, DC to studios in New York and L.A. While I miss Tavis Smiley (and he should have NEVER been taken off the network!), he's gone on to bigger and better things on another network. I'm sure that there were riffs and arguments Robert had over the direction of the network when we the public weren't looking. I don't listen to the critics who lambast the network--BET is what it is and it does interesting programming that ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX CAN'T! It shows the many sides of African Americans, positive, controversial, confrontational, good, bad, uplifting and everywhere else. A lot of people say that selling BET to Viacom made Mr. Johnson a sellout. It hasn't--it has helped BET become more accessible, even with its website and other properties. The Viacom people respected BET's incredible growth and didn't change anything to it. It has really given many Black personalities exposure with its programming, from celebrities to top leaders. Sometimes MTV's latest programming looks like BET, so the network's influence is all over the place on other cable networks! I hear BET mentioned more in conversations today than in the past, so it's a brand all its own. It's not just watched by African-Americans, but all races and nationalities. I hope that the next leaders of BET continue Robert's vision in the future. This book makes me respect Robert more and why I continue to watch BET 22 years later in 2006!

5 out of 5 stars www.valderbeebeshow.com.......2006-03-05

Living his passion and dreams, Johnson's story is told vicariously by journalist B. Pulley. Entrepreneurs can absorb much from the determination and success of Bob Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars Go Getter.......2005-09-14

Brett Pulley pulls together one of the most in depths pieces ever written on a black businessman, not just any black businessman, but the man behind BET. Brett pulls all stops on getting the nitty gritty on BET from the first scandal to Bob Johnson's billion dollar deal with Viacom. Pulley reaches into the black community, along with the media world and close personal friends of Johnson to get the story of a lifetime. Robert L Johnson is an even-tempered businessman with his heart set on making a deal as cheap as possible. He started BET with a $ 15,000 loan and thus paving the way for many up and coming African American entertainment moguls. Those who know Johnson personally would say he put the E in BET, which stands for entertainment. According to this book, Bob pulled out of business deals at the last minute, because he didn't want to put up a bulk of money to front the cost of production or any thing else he felt that was considered unnecessary. But Johnson always stood by his word and made powerful decisions, as he felt necessary. From the day he met his $15,000 obligation he built his way to a billion dollar deal with media powerhouse Viacom and went on to buy the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA and the Charlotte Stings of the WNBA.

This book fits any American who understands what its like to have a dream and sit down and make the plans to achieve this dream to its fullest. The book itself allowed me to look at someone else go through the trial and tribulations of building an idea into a multibillion dollar situation it allows anyone with dreams to see hope.

2 out of 5 stars CNN: about as bad as Fox News.......2005-08-03

There was a time when CNN was a channel I watched regularly. Because they're so desperate for ratings, they've decided to ape Fox News. They have the drunk, psycho blowhard Nancy Disgrace. They have airheads like Robin Meade, who wears WAY TOO MUCH makeup and is as phony as the day is long ("Good Morning, Sunshine!" - she's talking to a REMOTE, UNMANNED TELEVISION CAMERA!) and Erica Hill (who wears her hair like as a stiff, UGLY helmet) who try and act like they're actually "there with you"; like they're your "friends". Very deceptive. To their credit, they did fire the bow-tied moron and Bill Hemmer. Thank God Judy Woodruff is gone (Hey, Larry King: FOLLOW HER LEAD!) They never should have hired Soledad O'Brien. It was a horrible mistake booting the sexy Paula Zahn from mornings. CNN and other 24 hr news channels are only at their best when providing live, unscripted coverage, where they don't have a chance to can their comments. Instead of providing REAL news, viewers are subjected to "human interest stories" like young blondes who go missing, exploiting them for all their worth. CNN is the equivalent of "reality" tv - which is to say: GARBAGE. If you want some real news visit Democracy Now - THAT'S worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Good Book!.......2005-05-17

See first hand as CNN struggles to be objective in reporting, not as easy as one may think. There are many great stories in the book about the personalities which make up the news. There are lessons in reporting that are very applicable today. I found many parallels to the radio business. I recommend this book to any news reporter who cares about details.

4 out of 5 stars Not the "insider's account", but still good.......2006-05-16

This book gives you the idea that it was written by someone who is very knowledgable about the music industry, but hasn't had any actual hands-on experience. It's a good addition to your collection, but might not be what you are looking for if you want to actually get in the game. Check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen for a better read.

    5 out of 5 stars A Bitter Pill.......1998-12-03

I was upset. I was even angry. With the author? No, with the business. As a New Jersey songwriter, I am an outsider. More like an outsider looking to displace a Nashville "insider". We all want music to be our livelihoods. But there are only so many musical chairs. We all know this. So why do books that remind us of this fact disturb us so much? If you are absolutely determined to do all that is necessary to be a part of the country music scene, then this book is an easy read. For those circling like vultures, keeping their distances, but not willing to dive full force into the fray, this book will shoot you down. It is extremely well written, jam-packed with critical info, and is a one-stop country history lesson. I have a brand new appreciation for the Nashville machine. I hated what I read. But I believed what I read. Suggestion: 1. Buy the book, 2. Take a sedative, 3. Read the book, and 4. Well, you'll decide what's next.

    2 out of 5 stars Average.......1998-07-09

Daley's book still doesn't get to the insider track of what the Nashville music business is all about - mainly because he has not lived the experience - by trying to make it on music row. Rather, he uses the self-reports of others to guide his words.

For example, the quote ``Thou shalt live in Nashville,'' which refers to the industry's disapproval of anyone daring to commute between the main hive and the outlands.

However, he fails to explain why so many of the new artists signed to Nashville labels have never spent one minute in Nashville - compared to how it use to be. In short, he failed to mention that it is 'financial' backers paving the way for new artists, who have 'nothing' to do with the music business in Nashville.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing and insightful insider's account........1998-02-02

As a reality-check, this should be considered a must-read by any aspiring songwriter, musician or singer before embarking on the pitted road to Nashville. Through incredible insight, research and experience, Mr. Daley illuminates the good, the bad and the eccentricity of the business of country music. His engaging style captures the tone of the laid-back, but unique, methodologies of the movers and shakers of the Nashville Community.

    Book Description

A figure, moving at blinding speed, shot out from the left side of the stage. Within seconds, the offender wadded up like a piece of paper lay bleeding. The severity of the violence was almost sickening. The band never missed a beat.

The powerful person who made such easy work of a deranged fan was none other than the gentle, well-spoken Andre Augustine.

Throughout his phenomenal career Andre has worked with such rock and rap giants as Aerosmith, The Artist Formerly known As Prince, Kiss, Bon Jovi, George Thorogood, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy and N.W.A.

This is his story - an insider's look at the glamorous, not-so-glamorous and sometimes dangerous business of music.

Now, for the first time, author Mark Rodgers tells the story of a concert security director and his life on the road with artists who have helped create music history. Packed with insight, Guardian of the Gods is not an expose; rather, it offers a new and unseen perspective on the music business and reveals dozens of untold stories.

The book is packed with over 75 never-before-published photographs, including a 32-page section of color photographs that features a shot of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's grave and many unique backstage photos.

    5 out of 5 stars A - Must read for Rock-N-Roll fans! You won't put it down........2003-02-16

I've read a lot of books about Rock-N-Roll. This one is unique in approach resulting in seeing the industry from the other side. Not from just fans or musicians, but from behind the scenes. What really does go into each show, day after day - and somehow they come off successfully. The author has a remarkable ability to make each of Andres Augustine's episodes come to life. It really is a thrilling read. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A must book to read if you're a HUGE fan of KISS........2000-04-23

Bought the book from the Omaha KISS Expo recently while Andre was there to sign the book. Of course, I got his autograph. What a quite nice guy. Also, had a Q & A session with him. It was pretty interested to listen what he had to say but told us to get better information by read this book. He's right about it. Because it was a well informed on how the life on the road to protect the stars such as Aerosmith, KISS ,etc. I laughed so hard when he told the stories about Ace Frehley, the lead quitarist of KISS. If you like KISS, better get this book so you will enjoy to know what the deep inside of how the life of KISS when they are on the road. Mostly on Ace. I am still laughing here...I won't tell you. So you better read this book!

    5 out of 5 stars A great book !!.......1999-10-27

Guardian of the Gods is a great book for any music fan. There is a lot of trash out there written about the music industry and I was thrilled to see that this book is not a part of that. To find a good quality written book from "behind the scenes of the music business" is rare.

The stories are great - I bought it for the rock stuff and did not think I'd read the rap sections - but I have to admit that I found the whole book intriguing.

Mark Rodgers did a great job of capturing Andre's life and career in the music business.

The whole book is great - and all the color photos - WOW. I felt like I was right there in the stories.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read !!!.......1999-10-26

This is a great book for any music fan. There is a lot of trash out there and I was pleased to see that this book was above all that. It was a fun book and hard to put down. The behind the scenes stories gave you a peek at the inside. And the photos were fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars A very in-depth and entertaining look behind the music scene.......1999-10-25

Guardian if the Gods tells the story from AndrŽ Augustine's perspective as the head of security, and in some cases, the tour manager for various Rap and Rock bands. From the start of his career touring with Run D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys in their early days to touring with KISS, Aerosmith, and Bon Jovi, Augustine and writer Mark Rodgers have produced a book that keeps the reader interested from the first page to the last. It also includes a lot of great private, never-before -seen photos from Augustine's private collection. Guardian of the Gods is not an exposŽ, but more of a highlight journal that shows the good times, wild times, and in some cases the sad times of the music world, plus, the dangerous times dealing with over zealous fans and groupies.

Along with this there are ample descriptions of the processes that each musician passes through on the way to fame and fortune, this examples are of fictional but are taken fro real life and come from experienced people that have been in the business for many years.
