"Wake up, sir. We're here." It's a simple enough opening line--although not many would have guessed back in 1991 that this would lead to one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comics of the second half of the century.
In Preludes and Nocturnes, Neil Gaiman weaves the story of a man interested in capturing the physical manifestation of Death but who instead captures the King of Dreams. By Gaiman's own admission there's a lot in this first collection that is awkward and ungainly--which is not to say there are not frequent moments of greatness here. The chapter "24 Hours" is worth the price of the book alone; it stands as one of the most chilling examples of horror in comics. And let's not underestimate Gaiman's achievement of personifying Death as a perky, overly cheery, cute goth girl! All in all, I greatly prefer the roguish breaking of new ground in this book to the often dull precision of the concluding volumes of the Sandman series. --Jim Pascoe

Looks interesting.......2007-09-08
I bought this because I thought the storyline sounded good. But the animation is just a little too busy for my taste.
Respect the Lord of Dreams.......2007-09-06
The Sandman series is largely responsible for rekindling my desire to write. It is a beautiful work of art both visually and regarding its unique plot. This series won Neil Gaiman numerous awards and critical acclaim and it is well deserved. It's a delight to pick up these graphic novels and just see how dreams and reality are interwoven to dizzying heights with surprise twists, unique endings, plot branching and zero commitment from Gaiman to cater to typical comic lovers. I'm not saying the world of Marvel has nothing to offer, but I am saying that if you're an adult and want something intellectually stimulating and challenging that dares you to dream and invites you to respect the eternal energies that govern the unconscious, the parallel and the trans dimensional. Five stars shouldn't be given lightly as neither should one star ratings. But when something comes along that shatters your preconceived notions of certain aspects of your reality, then I think this easily counts as one of those instances where I'd put a six star rating if it were allowed. Simply put, mesmerizing and marvelous.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Dream has been captured by a group of self-centred magicians, who had been trying to entrap his sister, Death. They create many safeguards to keep him imprisoned, but eventually make a mistake.
He sets out to recover the items of power needed to rule his realm after his seven decade absense. This takes him by way of John Constantine, via Hell, to Scott Free and John J'onzz, and lastly a confrontation with Doctor Destiny.
Then, at the end, he gets a bunch of abuse from his sister.
A classic of highbrow surreal fantasy graphic fiction.......2007-08-20

Series Review: The Sandman
What happens when you have an oh so rare confluence of supreme talents (each of whom are among the best in their respective fields) who team up to produce a graphical series ? You get a once-in-a-generation, cutting edge, high-water-mark masterpiece like this one.
Speaking as a former hardcore collector with over 5,000+ issues at home, this series is easily one of the very best graphic novels ever produced, period. No questions asked.
This fabulous comic series has been conveniently re-published by Vertigo as an 11-part Graphic Novel:
1: Preludes & Nocturnes
2: The Doll's House
3: Dream Country
4: Season of Mists
5: A Game of You
6: Fables & Reflections
7: Brief Lives
8: World's End
9: The Kindly Ones
10: The Wake
11: Endless Nights
What's it about ?
Basically it's a long series of 11 sweepingly surreal short stories, told a GN format, about "The Endless" ... a quasi-divine extended dysfunctional family of metaphorical beings who struggle with their overall role in the greater scheme of things (i.e., reality), with each other, and with the mortals whose lives they intersect. Their names are Dream, Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delight/Delirium and Destruction.
I'll close with an eloquent excerpt from the prelude of Book 4, by Harlan Ellison (himself one of the most acclaimed and award winning short story writer currently living):
Harlan Ellison gushed:
"Possibly the only dismaying aspect of excellence is that it makes living in a world of mediocrity an ongoing prospect of living hell ... how dreary and burdensome and filled with anomie are the remainder of one's waking hours trapped in the shackled lock-step of the merely ordinary, the barely acceptable, the just ok and not a stroke better ...
In any field of endeavor, an occasional talent will manifest itself and, through its bare existence, we perceive how mundane has been the effort [prior to that point] in that field or genre ... and recognize how much higher thereafter is the high water mark.
The point being: {Edit: the peerless excellence of} Neil Gaiman's work on The Sandman ..."
High recommendation marks from moi. A must read for anyone who enjoys high brow surreal fantasy.
A Slow Start - But Great Finish.......2007-08-11
The Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes is the first volume of the graphic novel series of Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. Preludes collects the first eight volumes written. These follow a quest by Dream, one of the immortal Endless, to recover his powers and his realm, The Dreaming, after escaping a lifetime imprisonment at the hands of an English occult society. Dream's journey brings him to many interesting locales and forces him to cross paths with other DC characters, such as Scarecrow and John Contantine.
Positive:
* Gaiman is skilled storyteller and each chapter works as a self-contained tale. He has the ability to quickly create characters we can empathize with and are interested in.
* Comic book lore, pop culture, and mythology are woven together beautifully to create a world that is pleasantly unique.
Negative:
* Gaiman himself admits in the afterword that during this first volume he is struggling to find his voice. Subsequently, the stories oscillate between occult mystery, dark fantasy, horror, psychological studies, and superhero action. The quality of the writing wavers quite a bit as well.
* While the individual chapters are engaging, the overall story arc is not. It is a cliché quest adventure in which Dream must overcame obstacles to recover three lost artifacts one by one.
For Fans Of: modern mythology, urban fantasy, and dark fantasy
Bottom Line: While flawed, this volume shows great promise especially towards the end of the book. The chapters "24 Hours" and "The Sound of Her Wings" would be considered great writing in any format. Gaiman has set the stage for better things to come in future entries with an engaging character, Dream, and an interesting world. Though not consistently great writing, Preludes is a worthwhile read.

Still Perfer a Shop Manual.......2007-02-21
It's your standard 3rd party shop manual.. Better than a Hanes manual but no where near a Honda shop manual..
Useful.......2007-02-12
Good information provided for the average car owner, usually clearly and often to the point.
too much models.......2006-11-12
i brought this manual to repair my 93 accord, and there's too much stuff about preludes and old accords. A useful book, but take much models for a short book. A bigger book should solve it, with more photos.
Useless.......2005-10-02
Do not buy this book. It has absolutely no detail and states only what you can already figure out using common sense. I wanted help replacing the carburetor on my 1989 Honda Accord. The book says to remove hoses, connections and loosen the mounting nuts and lift out the carburetor and then install the new carburetor the same way the old one was installed---that's it. No help with hose diagrams or information about how to disconnect or reconnect anything. Also, the carburetor won't just lift out---it is necessary to loosen the manifold to get the thing out. The book doesn't even mention that. As I said, the book is useless. I wouldn't have given it even one star, but I had no choice.
awful.......2002-07-30
confusing, no detail.... You cannot wirte a 276 pg book for 10 years worth of 2 different cars... There are no pictures and often little detail on what you are supposed to be looking at... Maybe a good, i mena good mechanic could use this book, but no one else...

I am a history buff and I also liked these books.......2006-07-27
These books are good, even if you are really interested in historical accuracy. The great thing about them is they can really inspire one to do their own research and learn themselves about what was going on during that time. The interactions between the characters and famous historical figures aren't factual, of course, but the major events are accurate. These books really inspired me to do my own research and to visit the cities that the characters inhabit. I really enjoyed reading them, so if you love history, don't let the fiction aspect scare you away, it often serves as a fun backdrop in which real learning can take place.
A MUST READ, MUST BUY!.......2003-05-26
I have only recently been introduced to Bodie Thoene, but I became an instant fan with Vienna Prelude. Some of the twists in the book had my mouth dropping open. In the world of espionage, you don't know who to trust and who not to--these books brought that alive. They are written about a time before even my parents were born, and it's mouth-droolingly interesting to see what could have happened in this totally foreign world. I've never read anything like these and am in the process of buying all of Thoene's books. I'm even buying for my mother and telling everyone else about them. OUTSTANDING READ!
Must Read.......2002-08-22
Vienna Prelude is the first book in an amazing series. The characters are intriguing and Thoene's ability to show the struggle of the Jewish resistance in pre-WWII Europe is incredible.
Am I the only one to criticize these books?.......2002-01-18
I'll say that the books are interesting. They definitely have that in their favor. However, I have just finished reading some of the other online reviews for the Zion Covenant Series, and it seems that everyone loved them instantly, without finding anything to criticize about them. Well, I'll give you a more critical opinion to help guide you in your book purchases:
If you DON'T care for books in which....
1. ...the characters are very stereotypical;
2. ...the authors take great liberties with the thoughts, words, and actions of actual historical figures and make them say and do things that you know they never did, or would have done;
3. ...the main characters are great pals with the actual historical figures, and are rich, are beautiful, are witty- in short, have absolutely everything they need to accomplish the story and aren't very believable;
4. ...the plot isn't believable;
Then, these books might not be just right for you.
Yes, the books are very interesting. The plots aren't very believable, but they are interesting. The history contained in them is written well, and the books are worth reading for that alone. Unfortunately, these books are more of the same historical fiction in which overall unbelievability prevails, and that spoiled the books for me. Now, if you are not picky about having great people in history meddled with (for example, at one point in the third book Winston Churchill gets involved in a plot to kidnap the heroine, because she would be so exceedingly valuable as a spy for the Allies), and you don't worry about the other points in my list either, then you probably will like the books. For reading for amusement, they are fine. But if you want really great historical fiction, I wouldn't suggest the Zion Covenant.
I love these books!.......2001-10-16
If you start reading this series, you will not be able to put the books down! Against the backdrop of pre-WWII Europe, the Thoenes create characters that are true to life, and that you can't help but root for -- or against. These books are incredibly well-researched and well written, and a great investment of your time and money. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Mmmmmm, so good........2007-08-30
I first picked up Foundation because I had heard so much about the series on a science fiction podcast and its forum that I listen to. I wanted to know what the hype was all about over these books. There was always some kind of topic on the series, and the Robot series too. So I decided to pick up Foundation the next time I went to the book store.
I devoured Foundation. I read it in about three days. Asimov just seemed to speak to me, not only with the ideas, but also the writing style. After Foundation, I moved on to Foundation and Empire, another great book in the series. After reading Foundation and Empire, I decided to read Prelude to Foundation, because one of my friends at school had been reading it at the same time I was reading Foundation, and highly praised it; I just had to decide on what order to read the books: Second Foundation or Prelude to Foundation? I finally decided to read Prelude.
I loved this book. Asimov really knows how to keep a reader interested. Unlike the other two Foundation novels I've read, this one is filled with action, and is still able to deliver the mind blowing twist at the end. His style has changed from the other Foundation novels, but it does not take away from the experience. Instead of many sub-stories that slowly reveal the universe, Prelude is one continuous story about one person. Set during the 'flight' period of Hari Seldon's life, Asimov takes us on a journey through the home world of the Galactic Empire, Trantor, a world filled with a wider variety of cultures than the Galaxy itself! During his flight, Seldon searches for a way to cultivate his Psychohistory and make it feasible. Constantly on the run from governmental forces, Seldon must balance his research, his flight for freedom, and his integration into new cultures all at once. Action packed and with a plot twist that will have all Asimov fans giddy with excitement, this book kept me interested through every page!
I highly recommend this book to not only Asimov fans (any fan will definitely get a kick out of this one), but also to anyone interested in reading science fiction classics, or even any science fiction in general! What's not to like for an SF fan? Its got space travel, fast speeds, futuristic guns, futuristic societies and cultures, and doubts about the origin of humans! (Earth? A myth or a reality? *chuckle*) It took me about a week to read the book, but that was only because I was busy during that week. Had I had time, I would have devoured the book in 2 days! This book is well worth the time I put into it, and is especially worth it for Asimov fans, for it ties in his Robot and Empire novels incredibly well; it is a real tickle to see those tie-ins.
So, if you are thinking of buying this book, do. It is well worth the money and the time, plus it is not much money at all. You will not regret it!
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-08-04
Prelude to Foundation is an after-series prequel, if you will. The book look s at the earlier life of Hari Seldon while is is developing and presenting his theory of psychohistory.
Not such an easy process, and he gets married along the way, as well as dodging more than one violent attempt on their persons. Luckily, the spousal unit is handy with a blade, as far as this goes.
Only the end reproduces the magic.......2007-07-21
I read the original foundation series a year ago and just now read Prelude. Prelude starts off interesting but bogs down in the middle. I put the book down for days at a time before finally getting through to the end. The original trilogy was filled with plot twists driven by edgy logic. Once the plot twist revealed itself you could think back to the clues that hand been given in advance and marvel at how it all made sense. Prelude is largely absent this style until the last 50 pages. The end of the book is quite entertaining, if you can make it that far. BTW, if you are more interested in a visionary interpretation of the distant future, read Arthur C. Clarke's 3001. It's light on plot but his vision of the future is fascinating.
Great Sci-fi read.......2007-05-07
Classic science fiction by one of the masters. Fantasy fans might get bogged down, but for sci-fi purists this is the stuff. The whole Foundation series is excellent and I would highly recommend.
Fun futuristic novel.......2007-05-06
This was a very readable Sci-fi that takes place in the far, far future when there are numerous planets inhabited by humans, called the Galactic Empire. It follows the path of Hari Seldon, a mathmetitian that came up with the idea of psychohistory, a mathmatical way to possibly predict the future. This novel is the adventure of Hari with another character sent to protect him, on the center of the Galactic Empire, the planet of Trantor. Hari and his companion find one interesting adventure after another.

Customer Reviews:
Better know what you're buying -.......2007-08-13
No. this is definitely not the best Hulk story there is. Sure, it's not a bad one either - but don't set your hopes high before you're reading enough about it so you will decide fairly if it worth your money.
It's Daniel Way, which apparently not many in the comics industry like. He now writes the Wolverine Origins ongoing series, if this rings any bells. I personally love his writing - he puts the character through many situations, emotional situations, which hasn't been dealt like his style. In this particular story we get to see two versions of Hulk - the heroic type, and the confused type. That's the best thing I like about this story.
The first issue in this collection is nothing but awesome. But the following issues have a very unreliable background story. I simply don't buy it. It's too farfetched. But what you do get, if you're not trying to analyze the scientific and historic contradictions between this story and the actual world is a pretty good story, lots of interesting plot-twists and action packed TPB.
The one thing that really really bothered me, and I mean REALLY bothered me, is that they added the Hulk Handbook 2004 to this TPB. Why. There's no real good reason for putting it in. I really dislike all those handbooks out there, and it's a waste of money. I prefer if they just gathered the 4 issues, took off a couple of dollars and that's it.
I gave it 4 because I really like it, but if I was a really new reader or a really old Hulk-fan I wouldn't give it more than 3.
Not nearly as interesting as that which follows.......2007-07-16
INCREDIBLE HULK: PRELUDE TO PLANET HULK collects THE INCREDIBLE HULK (3rd series) #88-91, and is written by Daniel Way, and drawn by Keu Cha & Juan Santacruz. After Peter David's second departure from the book, fans wondered what would become of the Hulk. The results here were rather unspectacular, but they did ultimately lead somewhere interesting in the form of PLANET HULK and the current WORLD WAR HULK miniseries. Here, Bruce Banner hides out in Alaska until fate--and Nick Fury--come a'calling to usher his brutish alter-ego into the service of S.H.I.E.L.D., the super-spy organization. Sent into space, the Hulk finds treachery...but is that anything new for the green goliath? In short, no, no it's not. True, there's terrific art by Keu Cha, who only stayed on board for half this 4-part story (leaving lackluster Santacruz to ape his style for the second half). However Daniel Way's script is weak, threadbare, and doesn't really say anything new about the characters in it. Here, the Hulk once again takes on the Bruce Jones shorthand characterization of a nearly-mute brute instead of a more fully realized entity. Skip this book and proceed directly to PLANET HULK proper. Two stars.
A must have..........2007-07-16
In order to launch you into Planet Hulk. This totally sets up the Planet Hulk Series so that you can pleasantly get lost into the series.
Interesting, Although Unnecessary and Lacking Entertainment.......2007-07-05
As a prelude, it's interesting to see how Nick Fury and the Illuminati "tricked" Hulk into space, but it's unnecessary--everything you need to know about the storyline is summed up in the first few pages of the Incredible Hulk: Planet Hulk collection. The The Road to Civil War trade paperback, reprinting the first Illuminati one-shot, actually shows the five "heroes" coming to their decision to shoot the Hulk into space--so I would recommend that book over Daniel Way's stoic execution here.
Not Essential for planet hulk.......2007-06-30
I had recently read the planet hulk hardcover and had read the original Illuminate oneshot that showed the decision on what to do with the Hulk. So i was looking foward to finally picking this up.
Basically it sets the stage for how the hulk ended up in space. But it is pretty lackluster. Do yourselves a favor and read the oneshot, or the Road to Civil War trade instead, that includes the illuminati oneshot that shows the decision.
Also half this book is made up of Hulk Handbook 2004, which is useless. it is just profiles on hulk characters that is a waste of space and paper. It is just fluff to add more bulk to this already slim book.

Customer Reviews:
Dover's reprints most of the time are outstanding!.......2005-07-30
Sure, there can occasionally be problems with reprints of older editions (and I've seen some quite poor ones at that, notably with Belwin-Kalmus!); however, this one of Dover (as well as their reprint of the same composer's opera "Pelléas et Mélisande") is not one I'd slight in the least. My copy has very few problems indeed. I recommend this one unreservedly!
The Problem with Reprints.......2004-02-07
As the earlier reviewer pointed out, this Dover edition is a reprint of the orginal Durand score issued in the first decade of the 20th century. The downside of a reprint edition, especially from French publishers, who had a very distinctive engraving style, is that stems and staves tend to disappear in places, which makes it hard to read. Even so, Dover does a great service by making this masterpiece (I don't use that term lightly!) available at a reasonable price. If you really want to have a clean modern engraving, you'll have to shell out more than $100 for the cloth-bound critical edition.
Dissapointing printing.......2003-06-22
The music is of course fantastic, but I was dissapointed by the quality of the printing in this volume. Sometimes note stems are virtually nonexistent, and the very small verbal instructions are almost impossible to read. The reason for this is not Dover's fault; it's because this book was printed directly from ancient master plates of the original French editions. In fact, all of Dover's "reproductions of old French editions" series seem to share the same problems. Yet none of Dover's German editions has the problem. Oh well, I guess all I can say is: Let the Buyer Beware.

Auto manual is a lemon!.......2006-08-26
I recently bought this Chilton manual for my 2000 Honda Accord, and "disappointed" is an understatement. The manual was entirely generic procedures supplemented by poor quality photos and factory drawings. Worse, in two places where I have done the procedures in the past, the manual was flat out wrong. In one case, the procedure described to retract the disk brake calipers would actually damage the caliper if used. I returned the manual, and strongly recommend you stay away from the Chilton series. Hayes is better.
Good as info source, bad as a service guide........2004-12-30
I have recently acquired a 1996 Honda Accord. My problem is that the "climate control" panel isn't working. The fan, A/C, defroster, and a couple of other controls seems to have lost power. So I buy Chilton's "REPAIR manual", as it says on the front. Instructions turned out to be VERY vague on specifics of location of key parts, fasteners, etc. 2 pictures showed the panel being taken out easily, but it wasn't so. After trying to pry open the panel for 1/2 an hour, I bent/broke it at one place and dislocated the heater vents from the panel.
What would have helped is a diagram of the panel's connections to the car's front interior, which would show what the fasteners are and where they are.
Instead, Chilton decided to cut out the beneficial information and leave it to the readers to figure out the bigger part. What kind of a manual is this? In some parts it includes massive explanations about a single connector (example: SRS connections), but at most of places it covers too little repair info to be useful.
I WOULD NOT suggest this "manual" to an every-day driver because it isn't user friendly and, just when it seems crucial, it doesn't go in depth about parts. Mechanics probably have a more detailed manual, so they wouldn't use this one.
So, a question remains. Who or what is this manual for? As the reviewer "A reader" previously noted, the manual "showed me all the ins and outs... ...from bumper to bumper." True. So I guess it's good for knowing about your Honda's specifications and part locations. But using this manual as a service/repair guide is a mistake.
For a Prelude, this is a terrible book.......2003-01-19
I have a 1999 Honda Prelude. Previous to this, I had a Honda Civic. The book for the Civic was awesome with clear step by step instructions with pictures to accompany each step. This book, all the steps shown involve the Honda Accord which has a totally different body than the Prelude. Things that they mention in steps, more often than not, don't pertain to the Prelude.
Very incomplete.......2002-09-04
I purchased this book to learn how to replace my A/C filters on my Honda Accord Coupe, Year 2000 Model. Not a word about how to do this. It does not even cover how to remove the glove box for access to the filter plenum. A total waste of money for me. If it doesn't even cover this simple task, I wonder what will happen when I try to use if for something complicated..?
helped me work on my prelude.......2001-01-18
this book showed me all the ins and outs of the prelude from bumper to bumper. A deffinate buy if you wanna save money or just learn about your car. It has saved me some money on simple repairs and helped me modify the car as well.

A living thing seeks above all to discharge its strength--life itself is will to power.......2007-05-01
This was required reading for a graduate course in the Humanities.
Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of a "will to power" is central to his philosophical beliefs, and a recurring theme in his book "Beyond Good and Evil." When Nietzsche was a budding philosopher, he admired and was influenced by the writings of another philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer. However, Schopenhauer, like most scientists and philosophers of his day, attributed the "will to live" as the highest motivational life force in nature. Nietzsche observed that the "will to live" was not life affirming enough and that humankind needed a higher power. Therefore, Nietzsche theorized that living beings were not just motivated by a survival instinct to live. He understood that beings had a higher need, which he called the "will to power." One can easily interpret Nietzsche's "will to power" as a method by which people strive to grow and nurture their creative energies, and interact with the world. Nietzsche thinks that "will to power" was coupled with humankind's innate nature and passion to create. Nietzsche thinks that this "will to power" was the true driving force of humankind. "A living thing seeks above all to discharge its strength--life itself is will to power, self-preservation is only one of the indirect and most frequent results" (Nietzsche Aphorism 13). The "will to power" causes humans to dominate and impose their will on others. Thus for Nietzsche, humankind's "will to power" meant that life and will is the exploitation of others, and it has been since the beginning of time, immemorial (Nietzsche Aphorism 258). In fact, Nietzsche believed that one could take his concept of the "will to power" one-step further, and use it to explain the motivations of whole societies, and nation states, as well as the individual (Nietzsche aphorism 257, 259).
Nietzsche tends to be very passionate and absolutist in his aphorisms. He wrote so much that one could find plenty of instances in his works where he has contradicted himself. Nietzsche's concept of "will to power" is a philosophic thought, which led to many interpretations. To assume that Nietzsche thought that the primary instincts of the human being came down to violence and little else, amounts to a gross underestimation of Nietzsche's views of humankind. However, most of his writings on the concept of a "will to power," if interpreted as being violent, have to be understood more in vain with what he saw as the constant struggle of overcoming one's individual weaknesses (Nietzsche aphorism 22, 260). Nietzsche envisioned his "will to power" more along the lines of applying one's will in self-overcoming. Nietzsche's writings about violence are usually meant as violence against giving in to the herd or slave morality. The herd, as Nietzsche names it, is the vast majority of humans who throughout history have obeyed and followed the status quo. The herd has stymied human development with their slave morality (Nietzsche aphorism 198, 199). The slave morality invented the dichotomy of good and evil. "Moral judgments and condemnations constitute the favorite revenge of the spiritually limited against those less limited" (Nietzsche aphorism 219). The herd morality causes people to sublimate their creative drive. Thus, Nietzsche is imploring the few noble humans--the few geniuses to struggle against following the herd morality. Nietzsche wants the noble people to invent their own morality and values to live their lives by, and to fulfill their own "will to power" and not indulge in an effort to attract others to their values (Nietzsche aphorism 199, 201, 260).
Recommended reading for anyone interested in philosophy, history, and psychology.
Beyond Good & Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future.......2007-03-11
If you are in high school or college, you must read this. Friedrich Nietzsche is / was a man of deep thoughts, odd thoughts and yet they are as fitting today as they were them..... READ THIS, you will understand history of some things much better.
A Systematic Follow-Up to Zarathustra.......2007-02-16
If you were a little confused or put off by the poetic/fictional delivery in Zarathustra, this is the book for you. It sets out to say practically the same thing, but in a more literal sense.
To understand Nietzsche, I suggest starting with this and Zarathustra.
Enjoyable.......2007-01-12
Nietzsche looks at life and characterizes it without blinking. Not that his philosophy is particularily USEFUL; essentially, you have to come up with your own. He has no answers, poses no real questions, and simply posits that the man of the future will make his own answers to the questions that he finds.
Some parts of this are actually funny, such as his characterizations of the nations. Nobody comes off completely flattered, but the English get it worst!
My favorite part is probably the thoughtfully collected section of aphorisms. Nietzsche was a master of these, knew it, and served them up like some sumptuous dessert in the middle of a formal meal.
Needs a second reading... or second writing.......2006-12-26
I read this piece of work about 6 years ago. Maybe I rushed the process and read it like a novel - its not. 'Beyond...' is the summary of a trouble minded genius in what should be considered his most accessible form; unfortunately "accessible Nietzsche" may still be too much for 99.99 percent of the world.
Nietzsche is often adopted by young nihilistic men to help them find an explanation of the crazy world around them. To be honest I believe John Locke would be a better first step in to philosophy and a good counter to some of Nietzsche's ideas. In fact he shows signs of objectivism (a-la Ayn Rand) with statements such as "As long as you still experience the stars as something 'above you' you lack the eye of knowledge." Maybe this is out of context but I'm sure Ayn would have said the same thing. Funny, Ayn would probably hate such a comparison as she despised Fred's dogmatic or formulaic views of how man should be. For this Fred is equally a hypocrite for his criticism of the Catholic Church.
What I consider to be a fault of the English edition is the translator and his preface, he writes as though he is a member of some sort of Nietzsche Cult. Should a translator really tell the reader that what he is reading is "brilliant, unforgettable?" [p xv] I would honestly love to hear from an objective German on this point.
All said, Nietzsche IS required reading for anyone who sees value in developing some sort of intelligence... for that I guess I should do a second reading ;)

I ordered this book and the next one in the series. I ordered them as audiobook and I received hardbacks. I contacted amazon and they sent a replacement also in hardback. I have sent back the original order and received a confirmation that it was received. They also said that they were sending me a label so that I could send the replacement shipment back. I was told via e-mail that they would not reimburse me for the books and so far I have not received the audiobooks. I can easily go and purchase them at a regular store but I need the reimbursement or the audiobooks asap. Please help me get this taken care of.
