Book Description
This first-ever fully annotated edition of one of the most beloved novels in the world is a sheer delight for Jane Austen fans. Here is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice with more than 2,300 annotations on facing pages, including:
•
Explanations of historical context
Rules of etiquette, class differences, the position of women, legal and economic realities, leisure activities, and more.
•
Citations from Austen’s life, letters, and other writings
Parallels between the novel and Austen’s experience are revealed, along with writings that illuminate her beliefs and opinions.
•
Definitions and clarifications
Archaic words, words still in use whose meanings have changed, and obscure passages are explained.
•
Literary comments and analyses
Insightful notes highlight Austen’s artistry and point out the subtle ways she develops her characters and themes.
•
Maps and illustrations
of places and objects mentioned in the novel.
•
An introduction, a bibliography, and a detailed chronology of events
Of course, one can enjoy the novel without knowing the precise definition of a gentleman, or what it signifies that a character drives a coach rather than a hack chaise, or the rules governing social interaction at a ball, but readers of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice will find that these kinds of details add immeasurably to understanding and enjoying the intricate psychological interplay of Austen’s immortal characters.

Enjoyable addition to P&P library.......2007-09-08
If you love P&P, as I do, and have the book and the films, this will be an excellent addition to your library. It was fun to read the story, slowly, following the annotations as I went. Mr Shapard brings in all kinds of pertinent information about dress, customs, manners, idioms, locations, methods of travel and distances, psychology, etc. Many of the comments are, of course, the editor's interpretations of behavior or thought but all are reasonable.
I may not reference the book again but I am delighted to have it in my P&P collection. It is a job very well done.
Annotated text opens up your understanding.......2007-09-06
I won't bother to tell you that the text is wonderful, and Jane Austen a keen observer of human nature. You know that. I will say that the annotations in this edition are very helpful for those of us that don't know the differences between a chaise, a phaeton, and a barrouche, that didn't know that morning lasted until dinner, that tea was had between dinner and supper, or that quadrille was a card game, not a dance.
Yes, they are a bit repetitious. I don't see a justification for this, since no one is going to miss the first instance by dipping into the text randomly. And they do contain too many hints about what is about to happen. These notes could just as easily have been placed just after the scene as before it, and still be illuminating to the reader.
If you like Pride & Prejudice, you'll love this book.......2007-08-16
It will become a truth universally acknowledged that this book is destined to be a favorite among the lovers of "P&P." The depth of understanding it adds to the novel is wonderful. It defines words and phrases which have changed meaning, untangles the sentences which, at least from a contemporary view, are sometimes difficult to grasp, and clarifies the social niceties of Miss Austen's time. BEWARE, SPOILER ALERT: if you've never read "P&P" you may wish to skip the annotations first time around, since some of them give away plot points.
Great for a first time reader........2007-07-21
This book is the first Jane Austen novel that I have read. I found the annotations to be very helpful in understanding the cultural context of the novel, explaining antiquated customs and character motivations. Austen makes reference to other books of the era, and the editor elaborates on the background and significance of them.
Having the annotations opposite the text on the facing page is very convenient and it's easy to read every one. I did not find the annotations to be overly redundant.
I wish that the editor had more annotated Austen works, but having read this one, I'll have an easier time understanding the other novels.
Annotating Jane Austen.......2007-07-17
Like many, I've read Pride & Prejudice a number of times. This annotated version forced me to slow down, and I noticed things that slipped by me in other readings (P&P is a "page turner" after all; like a good thriller you want to keep reading). Who knew, for example, that there was "cross-dressing" in Jane Austen? (Lydia and Mrs. Forster dressed Chamberlayne up as a woman and he "passed" for a lady until the ladies laughed). My approach was to read the annotations for a chapter before reading the chapter and then browsing through them again as I read the chapter; this helped me to avoid getting too headache-y from shifting between text and annotation. I would take issue with a few of his interpretations, but they are only minor quibbles. And I agree there was a lot of repetition, especially of word meanings. I especially appreciated the extra comments in the concluding chapter from her letters, on the future fates of Kitty and Mary and others. This is well worth reading if you are interested in a slightly deeper look at P&P. Too soon to say, but my hope is that the next time I read P&P (sans notes), I will enjoy it more than ever.

Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you spend the whole book absolutely fixated on the critical question: will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy hook up?
Book Description
For over 150 years, Pride And Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen herself called this brilliant work her "own darling child." Pride And Prejudice, the story of Mrs. Bennet's attempts to marry off her five daughters is one of the best-loved and most enduring classics in English literature. Excitement fizzes through the Bennet household at Longbourn in Hertfordshire when young, eligible Mr. Charles Bingley rents the fine house nearby. He may have sisters, but he also has male friends, and one of these -- the haughty, and even wealthier, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy -- irks the vivacious Elizabeth Bennet, the second of the Bennet girls. She annoys him. Which is how we know they must one day marry. The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and Darcy is a splendid rendition of civilized sparring. As the characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, Jane Austen's radiantly caustic wit and keen observation sparkle.
Download Description
Jane Austen's perfect comedy of manners--one of the most popular novels of all time--features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. "Pride and Prejudice seems as vital today as ever," writes Anna Quindlen in her introduction to this Modern Library edition. "It is a pure joy to read." Eudora Welty agrees: "The gaiety is unextinguished, the irony has kept its bite, the reasoning is still sweet, the sparkle undiminished. [It is] irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be."

Pride and Prejudice.......2007-09-10
Not as good a quality of book as I had expected, but it is very nice.
Amazing novel.......2007-08-20
I decided to go to the library and take out the book after seeing the movie a few weeks ago. The movie was good but the book is so much better. It was well written, funny and everything you can expect from a good novel. Definitely a must read even if it is not required for class.
Great seller!.......2007-08-12
I ordered from them after another seller failed to send the books I wanted. They had my order to my mailbox before the other seller even replied about their mistake. Efficient, accurate, fast & great prices.
A good classic.......2007-08-10
This is probably my favorite classics. I don't devote too much time to reading classics but I've read some good ones before. They are not really my style but I do like the ones I have read. The different style is refreshing.
The book is written much differently than books are written these days. I was reading the begining of the book while I was tiered. I realized that I hadn't understood anything I'd read. I had to go and read again when I was completely awake.
It was enjoyable. I loved the characters; they were smarter than so many characters in other books and were very well spoken. That may, however, been how most people were in the 19th century.
It was fun to watch Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy go on with their love hate relationship. Until the end it was a lot of hate.
I thought it was a good classic but having not read many classics I'm not sure how it compares. Better than Wuthering Heights and not as good or as good as Great Expectations.

Romance etched in time.......2007-08-10
It's Jane Austen -- the name alone should render a good read. I have to admit that when I first read this book in high school, I skipped through with some cliff notes. However, after reading it in college, then writing a multitude of papers on it, and reading every modern day spinoff of Pride and Prejudice (i.e. Bridget Jones, Clueless), you can say this book ranks at the top of my list. Just the new age concept of a strong leading women that is exemplified by Elizabeth Bennet and to read the unconventional love and respect between her and Mr. Darcy just warms the heart. Elizabeth's mother is a stew of comedy (and embarrassment) and is stuck in the traditional gender roles of what a wife is supposed to be, and Elizabeth continually defies her mother. It is a light-hearted read filled with eloquent dialogue (ah, even romance in the 19th century can warm your heart), ridiculous encounters, and unforgettable moments.
Hope you enjoy it!
Book Description
This sexy, epic, hilarious, poignant and romantic sequel to Pride and Prejudice goes far beyond being a Jane Austen sequel. It's Tom Jones meets Jane Austen meets Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, with essence of Scarlett O'Hara and the Wife of Bath thrown in.
Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy-beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken-a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines. And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy-tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife.
Their passion is consuming and idyllic-essentially, they can't keep their hands off each other-through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage.
The book was self-published in 1999, with more than 10,000 copies sold. Here is what some readers are saying about Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife: "Pure pleasure...this book is so much fun I recommend it heartily." "Wow, Darcy! I could not put it down." "Tremendous-I didn't want it to end!"

Mr. Darcy Takes A Wife.......2007-10-03
I thought it was wonderful and entertaining. I can't wait for the next one, the one after that, and so on. I loved it so much, I hope the series doesn't end!
Ugggh.......2007-10-02
I'm not a nun or a prude by any means (in fact I've been in the field of sexuality ed for a very long time) but, ugggh! Too many badly written sex scenes, very very long. My copy had 100 pages missing near the end, and I was actually grateful! An unlikable Lizzy, a flaky Darcy and lots of lust. What's the rule now? If it's bad, make a sequel; maybe we'll get even more money...
I actually threw this book away (something I have never ever done in my life; it was missing pages, after all), but I guarantee there's more than enough copies in circulation without mine. I'd suggest you borrow it--buy it if you like it. You won't be out the $$ if you don't.
Not for the prude, but definately a page turner........2007-09-27
I think those who didn't like the book are expecting Jane Austen to be turning over in her grave. We have to remember that even though from a much more refined era, she was a woman way ahead of her time. If she lived in this era she probably would have thoroughly enjoyed this sequal. We all would love to know what happens to the newly married Darcy's. I thought that MDTAW was a great read - once I got passed the shock of the forthrightness of all the sex. (I mean come on people - the book is probably quite accurate in the context that they had sex back then in and out of marriage just as much as we do now - even if it is more "accepted" now.) There is so much more to the story than sex though. Mystery, humor, emotion. The main characters are very well developed and all the new characters add much to the story. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because I couldn't put it down. I would have given it 5 stars if we didn't have to listen to Lydia whine so much. What a pain in the A.
Big disappointment .......2007-09-27
Not a big fan of this book. I had to keep making myself continue on just to finish. The language is to convoluted and strained to sound like Jane Austen and it falls flat. The story is is full of sexual encounters that Austen would never have approved of. While this may not present a problem for readers today there is something to be said for leaving somethings to the imagination.
You either love it or you hate it.......2007-09-18
I'm not an Austin fanatic, but I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice. This book is not for traditionalists, but rather for those who wish the story didn't have to end. It's for the romantics who want to know what's next, and for the curious who want to see what goes on behind closed doors. It's funny, it's witty, and no, it's not for everyone. But those who love it can't put it down and those who hate it can't stop complaining about it. I'd say, if you're into this kind of thing, give it a chance. And if you really like it, check out her next sequel, Darcy and Elizabeth.

Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife.......2007-09-26
A wonderful and inspired sequel to Pride and Prejudice. The devlopment of Austen's characters and creation of new ones, along with adventure, intrigue, love and romance, makes this a marvelous read. I have read it three times already, and look forward to reading it again and again.
Sorely disappointed.......2007-09-10
I recently purchased this book, and, for the first time, actually returned a book to the bookstore. After struggling to read more that half of the book, I had to return it.
Usually, I enjoy even the smuttiest of romances, yet this one only degrades two of the most beloved characters in the English language. The text jumped all over the place. Perhaps it ended well, but after 42 chapters, I had enough.
Darcy and elizabeth, Days and Nights at Pemberley.......2007-09-01
I found this to be well written, but somewhat labored in the presentation. I enjoyed the basic story lines and salute anyone willing to take on the task of following Ms. Austin. An enjoyable if rather over long story.
So sexy, Mr. Darcy!.......2007-08-16
Wow, this book's steaming hot that it influenced me to romance my husband and love on him. This book will show a strong and masculine Mr. Darcy that you will want to read about many times over!
Nights and Days was great., Darcy is great!!.......2007-08-09
I loved the book...the passion is wonderful and easy to imagine the love they shared.

Great book.......2007-09-28
The songs sound just like the movie. The music is written exactly how it is played on the movie.
Wonderful beyond words .... .......2007-09-02
I just rediscoverd this DVD I bought last year and watched it again and found myself captivated by the music, particularly by the first piece "Dawn" (which later played so beautifully by Gorgiana in Pemberly). I ordered the music immediately.
The book arrived today (only two days after I ordered). I looked at it and thought there must be some mistake. How can there be so few notes! I thought to myself, oh no, this must be the simplified version, now I could never reproduce that hauntingly beautiful music that Georgiana played on my piano .. I was disappointed beyond words.
Nevertheless, hope against hope, I convinced myself to give it a try .. and surprise surprise, after a few minutes, I realized this is the real thing, and after a few hours, I found my playing that exact same (well almost exact same :-) beautiful music I heard on the DVD!
I am so happy! Thank you, thank you!
(I quit playing piano last year after many years playing classical piano. Now I am slowly starting to pick up again and this is the kind of music I want to play.)
(I am still confused whether there are two versions otf this music book. My book says "Piano Solo", not "Easy Piano Solo")
Great product and fast shipping!.......2007-07-25
I wasn't too sure of purchasing the product online because I was affraid it would take forever and a day to arrive but to my surprise I received my item in less than 5 days! I was very happy with the shipping and the musical score is just as wonderful as in the movie. I love it! Thanks!
MUSIC FOR PIANO.......2007-07-06
DAUGHER CAN PLAY ALMOST ALL OF IT...INTERMEDIATE BUT NOT SO EASY AS TO BE BORING...THANX
Me likey!.......2007-05-14
I really enjoyed the pieces. Playing them is a real pleasure. It's exactly like the music from the soundtrack!
Very nice!
Book Description
When Elizabeth Bennett marries the brooding, passionate Mr. Darcy, she is thrown into the exciting world of London society. She makes a powerful friend in the Marchioness of Englebury but the jealousy among her ladyship's circle threatens to destroy Elizabeth's happiness. Elizabeth is drawn into a powerful clique for whom intrigue is the stuff of life and rivalry the motive, and her success, it seems, can only come at the expense of good relations with her husband. This novel also continues the stories of other favorite Pride and Prejudice characters including Georgiana Darcy and Kitty Bennett, each of whom have amusing adventures of their own. Told in the language of the era and bringing Regency society vividly to life, Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride recalls Austen's theme of the necessity of individual growth in the maintainance of lasting bonds.
Customer Reviews:
It was... OK........2007-10-03
This was not one of my favorite P&P sequels, but there were things I liked about it. I will admit that I did like how the author developed Kitty's character and Georgiana's (though I like Aidan's character development of Georgiana a bit better). She does a good job at telling the story the way she sees it, the biggest problem I had with it was that we both disagreed on how Elizabeth would act in certain situations. It wasn't until the end that I felt she captured the same character that Austen formed. It was OK, but it took me two read throughs and some ignoring of events to get through it.
As a sidenote, I think the editor should be fired, because it drove me crazy with the formatting errors and such.
Not a Bad Sequel.......2007-09-21
I have wanted to read a good "sequel" to P&P and have been disappointed with many. There have been some I couldn't get all the way through. This one was okay. Although the author had a different writing style than Austen, I didn't think it was too bad. Like Austen, it didn't go into any graphic love scenes, but still had some affection between the two. I also liked how the author tried to be true to Elizabeth's spunk. It was a little off and a bit much at times, but at least she had personality in the book. I don't think any sequel will ever top the original, but then I don't expect them to and can enjoy a few that are less than wonderful.
Missed the mark........2007-09-04
This was a disappointment to me. The beginning was good, it showed Darcy and Elizabeth as the loving couple that they are then Elizabeth got over her head with the high society in London and the life of Darcy and Lizzy got lost some where. Lizzy flirted and forgot about Darcy and his feelings. I don't think that Jan Austen meant it to continue like that.
I couldn't feel the love between Darcy and Lizzy because they didn't have time enough together. I hated it when Kitty died just when she found happiness. The story didn't have a plot like someone else said and the most important story about Darcy and Lizzy was mentioned briefly in the epilogue, about the kids, when was she pregnant, how did Darcy felt about being a dad and how happy they were. I didn't care about the other characters which were so elaborated on. Just give me the details on how happy Darcy and Elizabeth were at Pemberley that is how Jane Austen would have continued her story.
Great Book-It could have been Jane Austen writing.......2007-08-17
I loved this book. It seems to have the spirit of Jane Austen's writings in it. I think she would have very much approved this book. I loved the character development, the way Ms. Halstead described Pemberley and Deepdene, you were there with them. I don't buy very many books for myself but I'll make an exception with this one. Thank you Ms. Halstead.
Seriously?.......2007-07-24
This gotta be one of the worst book ever written as a sequel to Pride and Prejudice. I keep waiting for a plot - and guess what, there isn't any. Except of course Elizabeth has to have a miscarriage - just for the sake of drama. And of course Darcy and Elizabeth have to argue - about absolutely nothing. And for some reasons, Elizabeth is "afraid" to tell Darcy she loves him (HUH?!), and that causes chapters after chapters of problems between them. He's insecure, and she just won't say it. (Huh?!). The other characters are very weakly developed. I finished the book, and I am still not sure what the point was. There isn't even anything funny or entertaining to help me get through the pages. I am just amazed that this book gets published at all.
Customer Reviews:
Can't put it down!.......2007-08-13
I read the adapted version of this novel for children as a kid and I loved it. However, reading the original novel was difficult since I was used to the simple words for the children's one. I even avoided reading it for quite a while until I picked it up again a few days ago. Now I can't seem to put it down. I'm also planning to read Jane Austen's other novels as well.
A true classic.......2007-08-11
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's most popular novel and it is remarkable that it has sustained such a high popularity 200 years after it was originally published. The primary plot of the story follows Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in a highly contentious courtship that begins with mutual contempt but evolves quite unexpectedly for both into very different feelings. Subplots involve her sister Jane and Mr. Bingley in a courtship of their own as well as the romantic entanglements of various other sisters and friends. The story is a bit of a roller coaster ride with soaring hopes and crushing disappointment in store as events unfold. I won't reveal the ending for the handful of people who haven't read it but suffice to say that the novel concludes in a way that leaves the vast majority of readers well satisfied.
Darcy and Elizabeth are complex and multi-layered characters who both grow and change somewhat as the book progresses. They are the heart and soul of the book and about as well fleshed out as any characters you are likely to see. The supporting characters, however, are considerably less deep and are more caricatures than anything else. Some are good and kind like Jane and Mr. Bingley, and others are ridiculous and vain like Mrs. Bennet but none are remotely as substantial as Darcy and Elizabeth. So, does this ruin the book? Hardly. These secondary characters offer a wealth of material for the author as she plays them off of Darcy and Elizabeth.
This novel is almost certainly the one where Austen best displays her sharp-edged wit both through Elizabeth's dialogue and in the narrative voice describing some of these characters and their actions. If some of them were less ridiculous, the potential for the satire would be weakened considerably. And make no mistake, Pride and Prejudice is as much a satire of the time it was written, as it is a romantic drama. Even today, the prose is quite funny and enjoyable. The Enriched Classics edition is also nice because it includes footnotes explaining some of the language and/or references that were well known at the time but confusing today's readers.
In summary, this is a great novel. Admittedly, there were times where I thought a character's behavior was a bit over-the-top but the overall story is so riveting and the book so compelling that I just can't find serious fault with it. Pride and Prejudice is deserving of its reputation and I highly recommend it to Austen fans and newcomers alike.
The sweetest romance ever.......2007-06-27
I was a little nervous when I first decided to put this on my summer reading list. The book was 367 pages of text, close together, justified and not written in easy language (i.e. modern English). I was optimistically hoping to finish it within a month.
But I really liked the movie with Keira Knightley and wanted to see how closely it compared and if it was as good as the movie.
Two weeks later, I am done, and I am pleased with the ride.
Plot:
Mr. Bingley, an eligible, wealthy bachelor, moves nearby the Bennett family, who have five unmarried daughters. The Bennett family must secure good marriages for their daughters since they will inherit nothing when their father dies. Romance is in the air between Jane Bennett and Mr. Bingley, while the first sparks of love appear between the proud, wealthy Mr. Darcy and the exuberant, Elizabeth Bennett.
Good:
There are so many good parts to this book! I don't quite know where to begin!
The characters are believable and real. Elizabeth is a well rounded character. She starts out proud and prejudiced against Mr. Darcy but as she learns of his true quality is not afraid of changing her mind. Mr. Darcy was sweet, opinionated, and equally prejudiced against Elizabeth's "poor connections".
The plot was wonderful and well paced. It kept me on the edge of my seat (although it was not an action book); I couldn't wait to see what would happen on each page.
I enjoyed the arguments between Elizabeth (and her fiesty personality) and Mr. Darcy (stiff and proud). The quips they came up with! The chemistry between the two was perfect!
Lastly, I enjoyed how the author emphasized (via Mr. Bennett) to marry for love and not for money or connections or the like. This is something very much beyond her time (as many marriages in the late 18th century were arranged).
Bad:
Well, this is being exceedingly petty, but the language of this book makes it difficult for a modern reader to fully understand the nuances of what Jane Austen is trying to say (the notes at the appendix help with this, however).
Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence
None. Talk is made of how Lydia and an officer run off to live with each other without marrying. None.
Overall:
Sweet. There is no better word for the free-spirited, witty romance between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. I would have to say this is the best, purest romance story I have ever read (besides, maybe The Princess Bride: S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure). The movie does a fabulous job with the book, but the book is even more enjoyable than the movie (if you can imagine). You will not be displeased with this one.
Jane Austen Is Remarkable!.......2007-05-03
This is a love story that is slow developing, at least for Elizabeth Bennett. Because she is prejudice of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, she cannot see his fascination with her, nor can she see his true disposistion, which is delightfully uncovered over time. His fascination stems from her lack of desire to cater to his apparant haughtiness. She mistakes his shyness for rudeness and his disdainment for silliness as resentment towards others.
And we musn't forget dear Mrs. Jane. Her love for Mr. Bently and his for her, make this book even more enthralling, especially as it all unfolds.
Mrs. Bingly is a vital character in this book as well, as she covers jealousy, treachery to certain extent, caniving, and even back-stabbing. Of course she wants Mr. Darcy for herself.
Jane Austen created memorable characters that each become a major part of this story! From her Father, Mr. Bennett, to the rediculous Mr. Collins and from Mrs. Bennett to the very silly Lydia. She even goes into detail about how things end up for the characters she created, at the end of the book! Great writing!
This story also is an awesome detail of what it was like in the 1700's for families and women. Jane did not deal with the political side of life in this book. Some reviews from famous author's were disappointed that the book did not contain any information about what the men did for a living, but that was not Jane's intention. It didn't matter what they did for a living. They "went to town on business" was enough information. You come to understand that women didn't marry for love much, as in the case of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. It was a convenience to be married for many. It also showed how important it was for families to have sons.
I highly recommend this book, and the movie. You will not be disappointed. It is a great read, over and over.
nice sense of humour.......2007-04-10
I really enjoyed the sense of humour and the plot. The action is developing very slow so if you are not fond of this kind of a plot you might not like it.

Book Description
Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet. Her early determination to dislike Mr. Darcy is a prejudice only matched by the folly of his arrogant pride. Their first impressions give way to true feelings in a comedy profoundly concerned with happiness and how it might be achieved.
Edited with an Introduction by Vivien Jones

A Favorite Through the Ages.......2007-08-09
Who could not get swept up in the thorny romance of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy? And what girl hasn't fallen in love at least a little bit with the prickly yet big-hearted Mr. Darcy? This book has been made into mutiple miniseries (the A&E one is hands-down my favorite) and movies, while many modern screenplays have borrowed (and downright stolen) from this classic, romantic comedy of errors--or prejudices if you will--and for good reason. Like a fine wine, this novel just seems to keep getting better with (my) age.
Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen .......2006-08-16
"Vivien Jones,in her new introduction to this Penguin Classics edition ... describes Pride and Prejudice as 'One of the most perfect, most pleasurable and most subtle' ... - of romantic love stories"
I am entusiastic and entirely agree with the above description appearing on the back-cover of Penguin Classics' Pride and Prejudice, edited with a 20 page introduction and notes by Vivien Jones!
My Favorite Book of All Time.......2006-07-20
I read this book about once a year. It has the wonderful dialogue and character development. AND it's funny! A must read for any self-respecting bookworm!
I loved it.......2006-07-01
As a high school student I was not sure I would like this book at all. This book was an easy read because of how well it was written and how much the story grabs on to you. Ever since reading this book I have gone on to read all of Jane Austen's book and found that they were equally as good.
Inner Love Story.......2006-06-01
When I went to a bookshop, this book 'Pride and Prejudice' charmed me with pretty book cover and familier title.
When I started reading this book, I could not stop, i had to finish it. This book is very classical love story, even though it is written in a difficult english style. I was able to fall into this book very easily.
Firstly, it was interesting how Jane portrayed the fluttering mind of village people like how all the villege people tried to contact with new villeger Bingley.
Also it was interesting that how Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's first impresstion is bed. That shows the first impression is not everyting, it's changeable by knowing the person in depth.
Combine with that period of time, the love story continues. I was queit impressed how their only hope is to get married. For example, wickham's case. Elizabeth's sister get crush on him, and just fall into him and gets marry with him.
I also knew that in that period of time, there was big gap between rich and poor same as today. This story is more meaningful because the story overcomes the richness. Also the way Mr. Darcy acts out, how he helps Elizabeth without letting her know and how he tries to protext him was really romantic.
One another thing is that these days, most of the love stories reverse the story at the end that might give readers a thrill. But this very classic book just kept on going to one direction the way that i predicted. That is the reason that i chose this book to write a review on.
Lastly, as I read this book I learnt that the appearance is not everything, the thing that charms person is one's scent. What kind of personality and chracteristic the one has. I think everyone wants to be pretty and be nice like a flower infront of a person the he or she loves. But important thing is that should be not determinded by a appearance but by inner personality.
Book Description
To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the breaking of baseball's color barrier, an exploration of Jackie Robinson's impact and legacy by the people whose lives were transformed by his courage
When Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he forever changed the game of baseball -- and America itself. In After Jackie, author Cal Fussman traces Robinson's enormous legacy in sports, politics, and the civil rights movement through the men (and women) who came after him. With moving and intimate interviews of more than one hundred former major league players of African-American descent, as well as such luminaries as Jimmy Carter, Muhammad Ali, and Walter Cronkite, among others, After Jackie recalls the day one man altered history for so many, and the history that followed.
Customer Reviews:
Good Historical Read.......2007-05-23
Being a fan of baseball & Black history, I loved it. It has interviews with living Negro League players, their widows & or children, other celeb
rities who lived through that era and white ballplayers as well.
It is full of insight from a lot of different viewpoints.
This Oral History Tells A Real Story.......2007-04-05
This nation's leaders in fields such as politics, sports and history do a great job with race. You see, they mostly race away from the real questions and answers surrounding slavery, prejudice and the lies from the past that are taught as fact today. Race fast enough and the truth may just get left far behind.
That is what makes After Jackie: Pride, Prejudice, and Baseball's Forgotten Heroes - An Oral History, as important a book as you can read this year, or ever. It gives you a foundation to discuss with your children true American history from the voices of true heroes.
Each person chronicled by author Cal Fussman - either in recent interviews or through past public statements - lived through the racial hatred that did not cease after Jackie Robinson donned the uniform of the Brooklyn Dodgers. That is because of the race away from the hard questions and tough answers.
"The more I spoke with the men who came after Jackie, the more certain I became of one thing: The only way to unlearn is to learn," writes Fussman. "The surest way for us to move forward is to know where the old have been."
And to put one issue in perspective - Major League Baseball's "Glory Road" - it really isn't "ancient" history. The first all-minority starting lineup - blacks and Latin players - was filled out by manager Danny Murtaugh on September 1, 1971, when his Pittsburgh Pirates played the Philadelphia Phillies. For the record, the Pirates won the World Series that season.
Former Dodgers star, Lou Johnson - whose life is equally uplifting and chilling due to the prejudice of society - captures the powerful message of the book through a story of sharing:
"The other day I was at my mother-in-law's funeral and there was a kid who was wearing a jersey with No. 42 on it. He had no idea what the 42 meant. In the heart of the hood, and this kid had no idea.
"I put my arm around this kid and I showed him my world championship ring. I said, 'It was No. 42 who got me this ring.'
"And then I told him about No. 42."
It is not enough to simply remember the past. Without a true comprehension of history, a society is doomed to repeat the same mistakes - in various degrees - over and over again.
And that will unfortunately make No. 42 just another number.

This is a long book, but a great romantic classic. I enjoyed the audio version as I spent long hours on the highway. Well narrated.
Very lively audio book.......2007-03-26
Emilia Fox is an absolutely amazing reader. She has really nice accent and voice and she creates very lively and good characters with her voice. It is very easy and enjoyable to follow who is who.
The audiobook itself is 11 CDs, it comes in a box and has small booklet with chapters titles. I can definitely recommend it.
