Book Description
Here's a rich world of blues harmonica instruction and music for beginning through intermediate players.
Inspired by the idea that most music instruction literature is boring and irrelevant to most people most of the time, Rock n' Blues taches improvisational blues harmonica in a way that gets through the even the most instruction-hating, throy-phobic, eye-closed, "leave-me-alone-I'm-jamming" harp player. THE BOOK includes choosing your harp, first sounds, getting sweet tone, playing chords, playing single notes, basic blues riffs, I-IV-V blues progressions, bending, tongue-blocking, octaves and splits, vibrato, headshakes, mics and amps, positions 1 through 6 plus 12, reed tuning, famous cross harp melodies and more. The audio index tells you the key of harmonica you need to jam with the great blues recordings.
On THE CD, Jon plays every major harp technique over an easy-jamming, blues-band background for your C harmonica. Turn off the instruction to hear only the band. Turn off the band to hear only the instruction. This fully indexed 74 minute audio program will be a constant companion as you develop your tone and techniques.
THE HARMONICA is a Hohner Bluesband in the key of C, regularly retailing at $6. It is capable of sweet tone, bending and blues.

Rock n Blues Review.......2007-08-23
I had previously purchased other instructional material by Jon Gindick, so I knew the guy was a good teacher, but this exceeded all expectations. I could see an improvement in myself after listening to the CD the very first time. The book is illustrated and specifically written for us "musical dummies". I would like to mention, however, that while the book is directed towards raw beginners, it takes a great deal of practicing to be able to Jam along with the CD. But, then again, that's probably the idea. If you were already that good you wouldn't need to be buying it. Overall, this is a great product.
Great Product!.......2007-05-23
Yeah--the caveman story line is a little tedious, but you gotta love Mr. Gindicks attempt at making it less technical and boring to study music. The material is great--the CD is wonderful--I've been getting better and better just playing the CD and jamming along--every now and then I even learn something new.
If you want to learn blues harp--this is a great place to start, in my opinion.

A Harmonica Book that Teaches the Fun Way!.......2007-05-15
If you're new to harmonica, or just want a few tips on how to improve your sound or technique, then this book is worth a look. John Gindick is a super teacher and this book is testament to that. Both entertaining and informing, this book has what the beginner/intermediate harp player is looking for.
Forget all the rest, buy this book.......2007-04-15
I have an impressive stack of "Learn to Play the Harmonica Instantly" books and none of them helped me in the least. This book got me playing the harmonics very quickly. The Caveman aspect of the book is a bit corny, but what the heck, why not? It's just Jon's way of making a unique approach to the music. If you really want to play music on your harmonica, buy this book. If you want excuses for why you don't play harmonica, stay with the others.
Rock n' Blues Harmonica.......2007-02-18
Exellent CD, book is very informative however drawn out with the caveman storyline which I would have preferred that it did not have.

Not What You Think.......2007-05-25
I thought this would have tips on playing techniques, tricks in sight reading, or adice from pros. It contains only a handful of useful tips. For the most part it covers string boiling, making straps, setting string, and other maintenance related topics not actual playing.
Very helpful, but some tips are short and not enough descriptive.......2007-03-19
I play bass guitar for years, and after so many years I found some new info here. This book is specially good for beginner, although profs can find some things they've never thought about.
101 Bass Tips.......2007-01-03
Nice book; I thought I knew the trick of the trade, but learnt some more from this book.
Easy to read and to follow
Excellent book.......2006-11-11
This book is packed with great tips on just about everything: technique, practicing, setting up your bass, playing over changes, getting a good sound, and much more. Each tip is concisely written and there are tons of very helpful illustrative photos and music samples. You can tell the book was written with care. Highly recommended!
A great bass player's resource by Gary Willis.......2006-03-08
Short & sweet: An excellant reference book. The CD at this time isn't much value as it was defective. No one's fault, just one of those things that sometimes happen in reproducing CDs. Have not yet recieved the replacement CD. Don't know if I will. Will have to come from the book publisher. The seller did a fine job. No complaints. Just starting the bass. This book is a bit advanced for me right now but I have it in my collection and glad to have it.

Absolutely Essential for Beginners - Five Stars! *****.......2007-09-16
I bought this with several other highly recommended books including "Art of Saxophone Playing" by Larry Teal (also great!). I found this beginners book essential once I actually start to play the sax. It is very clear and practical. It has the best photos of finger positions for specific notes... much better than other books.
You will be glad (like me) to have it right there when you first start to blow notes from your sax...
That's the highest recommendation I can give!
first time Sax player.......2007-01-10
good book for beginners easy to learn from before taking classes
Super book for the starter.......2006-05-10
I have this book only 2 weeks and wonder how perfectly and mature it's structure! It seems small book, you hardly find something in deep.. But... it has amazingly well sequence of learning, relevant tips. CD software is not working in Windows XP, but I extracted audio tracks and play them separately. Audio tracks helps a lot to follow the progress of learning. Respect for authors of this book!
Sax Book Review.......2006-05-10
This is just what I needed. It answers all my questions and I recommend this to anyone who wants to play an alto sax, but don't know where to begin. A must have.
Excellent.......2006-03-15
Very good for someone who knows nothing, It does challenge the learner. I thought the CD was very handy, however I was unable to install the program so I just made use of the audio tracks.
Book Description
The authors' new approach to learning two playing techniques offers a systematic method for mastering the modern, legato technique needed for organ music composed after 1750, as well as an articulated technique for earlier works. The authors also present useful information on accompanying anthems and solos and on adapting piano and orchestral accompaniments to the organ.
Customer Reviews:
Appraisal of ORGAN TECHNIQUE: MODERN AND EARLY.......2007-05-31
I have been using ORGAN TECHNIQUE: MODERN AND EARLY for less than a month with three students who are just beginning organ study. I am very pleased with the content of the book, and how it is laid out. There is attention to details that other organ books that I have used in the past do not include.
I like the specific instructions on manual and pedal technique, and I am particularly pleased with the exercises and the selections of organ literature that have been included in this book.
I am very pleased with this book.
Organ Technique solid book.......2006-08-14
In the last three years I have been learning the Organ, and this book is an excellent guide and tool for doing that. It is easy to read and easy to work with -- but to learn the organ, cotninues to demand lots of time for pracitice!

Wanna learn the tinwhistle..........2007-05-17
If you want to learn how to play the tinwhistle, then this is the book. Starts you out with the very basics and works you up to the more advanced. Bill Ochs is by far one of the best whistle players out there. Make sure you buy the book with the cd; hearing how the tunes are played will help you to learn a lot better then the book alone. This is the best instruction book I have every seen. Clear, concise and never overwelming. You will not only love to play the whistle, but love learning to play.
Great book for beginners.......2006-08-28
Very clear instructions. This book is obviously designed by someone who enjoys teaching the tinwhistle. In addition to tinwhistle basics, there are clear explanations of the basics of reading music. The lessons are well structured. This book is a good guide to people who want to learn the instrument on their own. It also has a good selection of tunes. Well worth the price.
Excellent.......2004-09-21
The history of the Penny Whistle was interesting. It gives such thorough instructions on playing with many good songs to play to. Just listening to the CD is enjoyalbe. I recommend this book. A person will get their money's worth with this book and CD.
The Best Tin Whistle Tutorial.......2001-12-23
If you want to learn to play the tin whistle, or if you've begun to play and need some direction, this set is by far the best available tin whistle tutorial on the market. Bill Ochs is a brilliant player and teacher. Buy this set, work through it, and then go to New York and take a lesson with Bill. You'll find all the information you need at his web site (look for the web address in the book).
Book Description
Pluck them, bang them, shake them, and blow into them! These instruments—from wood temple gongs to water drums and stamping tubes—produce every type of joyful noise. Make a fun “gourd orchestra” of rattles, like a Mesoamerican Indian rain stick and African shekere; a Caribbean guiro; a gorgeous mbira or thumb piano; and friction drums that wail or roar. There are instruments from near and far, from the unusual to the familiar banjo and guitar. Tips on choosing, cleaning, and sealing a gourd, and decorating and playing the finished instrument, help to create beautiful music.
Customer Reviews:
incomplete directions and materials lists.......2000-12-09
This book does not compare to Ginger Summit's previous books on gourd crafts. The material lists are incomplete and the instructions are poorly written. It was extremely frustrating, particularly to construct the thumb piano, to have incomplete parts list and the book assumes that the user has a fairly extensive knowledge of tools. I do NOT recommend this book to anyone who wants a quality folk type instrument. I have constructed four instruments and found the general directions poor. It was interesting from a historical folk instrument aspect but was not functional for helping one learn to create gourd instruments.
Not much for quality instruments.......2000-09-06
This book gives wonderful history and inspiration to anyone interested in crafting musical instruments from gourds. Having crafted several instruments myself, I found the real, usable information in this book rather limited, especially if you're looking to build a quality instrument. I would suggest the gourd crafter check out the book "Making Wood Folk Instruments" by Dennis Waring. The instructions are much better and in many cases can be altered to use gourds rather than wood.
Making Gourd Musical Instruments.......2000-03-26
A fantastic companion to "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft" (by the same authors). The history lesson on each type of instrument is wonderful for both adults and children. The photos of both ancient and new instruments are a pleasure to look at and an inspiration to get going on a project while the instructions for making the instruments are basic enough to get started and then let your imagination run wild. If you need more help with basic gourd craft, just refer to "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft" Happy Gourding!

All Kinds of Licks in this Book.......2007-08-30
This is a great book to get ideas for Jazz licks. Excellent, not just for the saxophone, but other instruments in the same register can benefit from the instruction in this book. For me, coming from a classical music background, I'm using it with my violin to learn Jazz Violin and improvisation skills. This is quite a challenge, to say the least! These licks are very easy to learn, and not ridiculously difficult, which is what beginners to Jazz music really need.
I really like the book and always have it on my music stand.
Great resource for all musicians.......2005-10-07
All of Arnie Berle's books present the info in a clear, concise and logical way. I recommend you get your hands on as many of them as you can, while you can, especially if you're learning on your own. Any aspiring jazz musician can't have too many pattern books, and this one is a gem. 'Improvisation For The Contemporary Musician' and 'Encyclopedia of Scales, Modes and Melodic Patterns' also by Arnie are also highly recommended.
excellent phrase book........2002-07-19
The exercise in this book are commonly heard phrases that can be played over standard chord sequences. As practice material they are great and the explanations are simple and enlightening. This is a good book for developing dexterity and a feel for the keys and scales. Improvising is much more than repeated practiced licks but working through this book will give a player some chops to fall back on as well as a wider understaning of what is possible.
Book Description
The only course based entirely on today's popular songs as well as famous light classics. The easy-to-follow text and demonstration photographs enable you to become a competent player in the shortest possible time.
Customer Reviews:
Missing the sound, as a beginner, how do i know how it sounds???.......2007-07-11
The explanations in the beginning added some value. This book gave a bit more detail on embouchure and breathing, which I know is important. Though after getting started inthe book, what is sorely missing... is how the music is supposed to sound. If this is a beginners book, and which I am... how do i know the pace of Imagine by John Lennon... What is the beat really FEEL like. Without an accompanying CD... I feel that this book isn't giving me the same ability to critique myself as "Absolute Beginners / Alto Saxophone" with CD of all music in the book. For me, the tunes in this book are good BUT I have NOOO idea if i'm close to the pace, sound or FEEL.I am finding the actual songs on iTunes and looping the section so i can match (which is fun), but someone should be doing this for me, is my thinking.
Legato and Slurs... and tonguing, is explained well in both books but what doe it sound like? I play a Legato and a Slur and it's really close right now for me with a CD. How would I be able to create that difference by just reading about it???
The explanations are more detailed than Absolut Beginner's guide so I can use it as a reference but NO CD in 2007 is big oversight for me. Happy saxing!
excelent.......2006-03-21
this book series is exelent for any intermediate sax player. I bought all 4 and they rock.
not the complete songs.......2005-09-20
This book is great for showing the fingering of playing a sax or breathing. But take note that the list of songs, is a full list of the songs, it's just that on each song only the intro is given.
Start here.......2002-12-09
After reading this first book one discovers that Mr. Ravenscroft is not only a superb sax player -just listen to Pink Floyd's The Final Cut to take a sample- but a remarkable teacher also. The book itself starts with the obvious very basics you need to knowing the instrument. Then step by step introduces posture, breathing, embouchure and fingering techniques. And for those unpacients, the first sound comes just befor mid-book. From there on simple tunes are presented in an easy way, so anyone can play his first ¨solo gigs¨ in a matter of days.
Fantastic, Easy get started series for sax players.......1999-02-14
I've read 4 different series of "teach yourself saxophone" books and the "Complete" series by Mr. Ravenscroft is by far the best and most interesting I've found. The songs are fun and get you playing quickly. The instruction is great. The 2nd and 3rd are the most important to own and take you from beginer to player.
Book Description
Master the most important harmonica technique with this handy guide containing beginner's instructions + hot bending licks and blues scales for average and advanced players.

Learn how to bend notes on your harmonica.......2007-10-03
Great book to learn how to bend notes on your harmonica. Was recommended to me by others.
Could be great........2006-08-27
This book could be great IF it had a CD with it.
After three weeks I can bend one note........2003-02-18
I was a total absolute beginner when I met this book. After three weeks of practice following this book, I can draw-bend one note. I am still improving. This book is concise but very helpful for broad range of harpists from beginners to semi-professional. I am grateful for David Harp for this wonderful text.
The book that learns you how to bend.......1997-11-08
If you are a beginning blues harp player, this is the book that you must have to learn how to bend. My bending has improved very much after reading and practising this book. Also a friend of mine uses the book and his bending is improving too.
