Book Description

Are you looking for a more effective approach to real-time systems development? Real-Time Object-Oriented Modeling The development of real-time distributed systems is one of the most difficult engineering problems ever faced, taxing the capabilities of traditional real-time software development approaches. Real-Time Object-Oriented Modeling is the first book that brings together, in a single harmonious approach, the power of object-oriented concepts tailored specifically for real-time systems, with an iterative and incremental process based on the use of executable models. Developed by practitioners, the proven methodology described here is becoming a leader in the industry. Using a learn-by-example approach, this book offers:
* A single consistent set of graphical modeling concepts, chosen to improve developer effectiveness, which apply uniformly to analysis, design, and implementation. This reduces the learning curve to master the entire method and eliminates expensive discontinuities across different stages of development.
* An approach to the object paradigm that is easy to learn and that applies to the construction of reusable architectural design components, not just low-level language elements. This unleashes the true power of the object paradigm.
* Techniques for constructing executable models to gain early confidence in specifications and design decisions.
* Approaches to project management that deliver the benefits of the object paradigm and executable models.

4 out of 5 stars Good state machine methodology.......2007-02-10

ROOM is a great methodology, but I rarely encounter it in my work. I do mostly SOA and BPM work, and I think there are aspects of ROOM (particular its state machine language) that are well suited to that domain. I wonder how popular ROOM is these days in the real-time and embedded systems development community?

If you're into state machines, you'll enjoy this book. ROOM is influenced by the work of David Harel, supporting hierachical states, group transitions and transitions to history, choice points, and the ability to associate actions with both transitions and states. In contrast with Harel, ROOM does not support orthogonal states, although its concurrency model is quite powerful. I prefer ROOM to the UML for the modeling of state.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, but mostly as a historical document.......2004-03-05

First, remember that this book was published in 1994 - it was probably written in the 1992-3 era. The OO design world was still in the "warring states" period before unification under UML. The company that created ROOM tools, if I understand correctly, was absorbed by another company that was absorbed by another company - I'm not sure how much of ROOM in its pure form is still left.

That doesn't matter. In its time, ROOM was wild, innovative, and a topic of heated debate. It created a visual, highly abstracted language (back then, a questionable novelty) around an intensely parallelized model of computing (also a questionable novelty), at a time when "real-time" often meant lots of assembly programming in command-line environments. I was doing embedded development back about then - based on the mind-set of the time, I'm surprised that ROOM had the success and influence that it did.

Surprised but pleased. Lots of the ROOM techniques and notations survive in UML and other development tools. Modern component programming environments, JavaBeans included, show many signs of direct descent from the ROOM techniques. Still, there's a long way to go. ROOM may have been way ahead of its time, and languages still haven't caught up fully to its models of communication and parallelism.

As impressive an achievement as ROOM was (and is), I have some reservations about it. It relies pretty heavily of state machines for modelling the interacting components. State machines are a good tool, but quite unfamiliar to most software developers these days. I'm not sure whether that's a fault of the methodology or of today's programmers. I also have reservations about any methodology that requires me to buy someone's tools. The authors state that the design methodology can be used without their tools - based on ROOM's complexity, I doubt it. Also, I have a serious distrust of any programming environment that takes over so much of the process. Such tool sets tend to leave me feeling cramped, with little way to express my ideas in different terms. Finally, I'm sure it does all it says it does. Even so, the moment always comes when the tool-generated subsystems need to be opened up for debugging, or when the system has to be open to interaction with other development tools. Real-time and embedded systems tend to be so idiosyncratic and demanding that both kinds of openness in an IDE are compulsory. I just don't see the way out of the closed ROOM.

My present interest is not so much in the ROOM methodology itself, although I'm interested in methodology in general. Instead, I'm studying the visual notation it developed for expressing complex computations. Whatever ROOM's faults and whatever its later history, it's still worth attention.

4 out of 5 stars Concepts are incredibly valid and useful.......2003-11-05

The eminently practical, usable, powerful, elegant and - once understood - simple concepts behind ROOM deserve the broadest audience amongst real-time and even non-real-time developers. It has been a couple of years since I cracked the cover and I recall the reading being dry. Nonetheless, if you are considering a move to Rational Rose RealTime as a development tool (into which ObjecTime evolved), then this book is truly helpful as a reference for the modeling concepts. The example used throughout is simple enough that it is easy to grasp allowing you to dedicate your time to conceptual understanding rather than getting your head around some obtuse example. At the same time, the example is a natural vehicle for the inclusion of advanced concepts as each is intoduced.

The concepts of ROOM are finding/have found their way into the UML and the "it's not UML" darts of years ago are a little tired at this juncture.

ROOM is brilliant.

(from a former ObjecTime/Rational type though with no association for a few years)

1 out of 5 stars Too old.......2003-04-03

This book doesn't even mention UML. It may be good if you want to use author's modeling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation of OO for Embedded Development.......2002-12-07

I have used ROOM since 1993 - it is a very useful and flexible methodology. The authors present it in a very clear and well thought out manner. The examples also show that this is not a "toy" methodology. ROOM comes out of the author's years of experience in developing real solutions; I can only say that it has been very successful for myself and teams I've been on as well. That it has evolved into the real-time representation of UML only shows that these authors were ahead of their time.

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he accepted the notion that women suffered depression at rates several times that of men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that there has been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real is convinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed from fathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distanced relationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors ranging from stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. Men reading I Don't Want to Talk About It will probably recognize themselves in every chapter, while women will recognize their partners--and, of course, both sexes will see their fathers in a new light.

Book Description

Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced

psychotherapist Terrence Real that depression is a silent epidemic in men -- that

men hide their condition from family, friends, and themselves to avoid the stigma

of depression's "un-manliness." Problems that we think of as typically

male -- difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and

rage-are really attempts to escape depression. And these escape attempts only

hurt the people men love and pass their condition on to their children.

This groundbreaking book is the "pathway out of darkness" that these men and

their families seek. Real reveals how men can unearth their pain, heal

themselves, restore relationships, and break the legacy of abuse. He mixes

penetrating analysis with compelling tales of his patients and even his own

experiences with depression as the son of a violent, depressed father and the

father of two young sons.

Each year, millions of men and women fall prey to depression. While the disorder has been called "psychiatry's most treatable condition", less than one in five get help. In recent years, the silence surrounding depression in women has begun to lift, but only now, with this powerful groundbreaking work, does psychotherapist Terrence Real expose a virtual epidemic of the disorder in men. Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced Terrence Real that there are two forms of depression: "overt" and "covert". Feeling the stigma of depression's "unmanliness", many men hide their condition not only from family and friends but even from themselves. Attempts to escape depression fuel many of the problems we think of as typically male - difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and rage. By directing their pain outward, depressed men hurt the people they love, and, most tragically, pass their condition on to their children. A master storyteller, Terrence Real mixes penetrating analysis with poignant, compelling tales of the men and women whom he treats. He writes with passion and searing clarity about his own experiences with depression, as the son of a depressed, violent father, and the father of two young sons.

5 out of 5 stars I Don't Want to Talk about It: Over Coming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression.......2007-08-31

Should be required reading for every male because it would help them to much greater happiness. If we all realized how male socialization helps mold ALL males, willingly AND unwillingly become soldiers treating ALL of their interactions as battles and ALL people as enemies or potential enemies who must be controlled or defeated.

5 out of 5 stars An uncomfortable but needed book.......2007-08-11

This is the second book on male depression I have read (first being Archibald Hart's Understanding Male Depression and out of print). Not written from a Christian perspective but a good read and useful for all men at every age-in other words, it's never too late nor too early to read this book! He has an insightful discussion about the active and passive abuse that occurs to many men in the socialization process, a process that teaches us to hold emotions at a distance. What I take away from the book is that many men suffer from covert or overt depression. They have learned to cover up the pain of their depression with addictive behavior which may lead to abuse or irresponsibility toward others and by keeping relationships at a distance emotionally. When things collapse or their self-medication attempts fail, the depression breaks out.

One of my favorite quotes: "The essential shift in question that marks a depressed man's transformation is the shift from: What shall I get? to: What can I offer? . . . Recovery demands a move into generativity." 321

If you are in a relationship with a depressed person, this book can help save your sanity. Depression is very insideous and destructive. This book can help you avoid some of the pitfalls and understand what drives your depressed loved one. My therapist recommended it and it truly helped me see the illness for what it is.

2 out of 5 stars Overcoming? Not Quite.......2007-04-03

This was a very well written book, and has plenty to sympathize with. The portions about forced male gender roles contributing to ongoing inner turmoil isn't bad, though i'm not entirely convinced that's a major contributing factor to male depression.

The big problem here is: THIS IS NOT A SELF HELP BOOK. The title is "overcoming" male depression, but the author does not lay out a game plan. What he tells you, you've already been told: Go find a shrink. Great. So much for saving thousands of dollars on years of therapy on a do-it-yourself approach.

2 out of 5 stars Disppointed.......2007-01-11

This is a difficult read, its mostly composites and difficult to glean any real clinical information. Admittedly i haven't gotten though the entire book yet. Unmasking Male Depression is much better for clinical information, if you can stomach being preached at.

4 out of 5 stars Another great book by Robert T. Kiyosaki. .......2007-07-30

I found this more helpful than some of his other more recent books. It's not just a reiteration of his old information. It goes over some key points of his first book but hits on many things and mistakes he went through in his many businesses. He then applies the things he has learned and puts them in this book in ways which anyone can understand. There are some insightful tips from Sharon Lecter in here too.

2 out of 5 stars A little too familiar.......2007-07-25

My cousin gave me this book on cd as a gift in preparation for my departure from the working world to full blown self employment. Despite what I thought were veiled messages from my cousin, I eagerly listened to this book. I'm not a big fan of books on cd because I have a hard time concentrating while just listening to them, but as soon as I put "Before You Quit Your Job" in I began thinking that I've read/heard this before. I've read Rich Dad, Poor Dad (and liked it) and I couldn't help but think that this book sounds an awful lot like it. I haven't really compared the "text" of the two since I've only listened to this book in the car, but I swear many, if not most, of the information and stories are repackaged from Rich Dad and possibly the other books in the series based on what others here have had to say about it. I don't feel as if I gained anything new from reading this book and I'm reluctant to read any of the others in the series after this. So, if you've never read any of the other books this might be worthwhile. If you have read the others, well, I don't know...this may be terribly redundant.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-02

This book provides a sound overview of the fundamental infrastructure that must be present for a business to be successful. As always, Mr Kiyosaki has done a good job explaining the basics of good business acumen in laymen's terms. He also explains some of the mistakes that he made during his career as a business owner to help readers understand some of the common pitfalls that can occur in running and building a business.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for small business owners!.......2007-05-09

This book was exactly what my small business needed. He lays out not only what is necessary to take it to the next level, but the potential pitfalls the authors have encountered. I'd highly recommend it for any small (or large) business owner.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-04-01

Anyone who is serious about starting a business but have doubts should definitely read this book. Robert Kiyosaki walks you through the entire process of building a business from top to bottom. He gives you real life stories, successes and failures. I definitely recommend this book.

I think that it is a good book for people who are just getting into real estate investing. It gives you information on many creative things that can be done. I learned alot and plan to use some of the suggestions and tools soon.

1 out of 5 stars Plug for other products - all fluff.......2004-07-23

The authors of this book touch on many subjects, giving very little detail in any of them. The legal and accounting loopholes are very basic - and they keep referring you to other products and sites they've written/published - making this book one big commercial. In one area, when talking about the benefits of real estate investment, the fail to even mention costs associated with using equity, cash flow, repairs, etc. I am a new entrant to real estate investing, and would not recommend this book to anyone. It is no different than the get rich quick schemes you see on tv/internet.

3 out of 5 stars Good for starters so you can talk the talk with your lawyer.......2004-04-13

The concepts in the RichDad series book Rich Dad, Poor Dad are basic concepts. It was a book to introduce the reader that working hard your whole life is not the way to create real wealth. In Real Estate Loopholes, the concepts for investing in real estate are pretty much the same amount of detail as in RDPD. It's a short read intended to give the reader some surface level knowledge of real estate tax advantage and legal issues to avoid by setting up LPs and LLPs. By reading this book, I'm able to ask more intelligent questions for my real estate attorney.

I'd say that it's a worthwhile read, but only if you are starting out in real estate investment and are going to be working with an attorney so you can ask follow up questions in forming your LLP that will be holding the real estate.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in GOLD for the new real estate investor !.......2004-03-22

I read this book before I read the Amazon reviews. I was shocked at some of the negative comments. My recommendation is to read all of the how-to real estate books you want. When you finally decide you're going to invest, buy this book. It will save you money and headaches. If nothing else it will give you a basic understanding of ownership options and tax benefits (loopholes) that you can then discuss with a lawyer and accountant. Know what you're getting in to before you make your first offer to buy. It is the only real estate book that I am 100% satisfied with. Good luck!

Book Description

Armed with their courage, their determination, their wits and a Bible, Robert Cornuke and Larry Williams embarked on a journey to confirm the Bible as historically accurate. In the process they discovered not only their goal but a faith strengthened by the evidence. "When I stood on those scorched rocks, my life was changed at that moment," Cornuke would later recall. Sneaking across borders, crawling into forbidden military installations, and using night vision goggles to avoid being detected, these men pursued their mission. In Search of the Mountain of God tells the amazing story of the discovery of what they and others are convinced is the authentic location of the biblical Mt. Sinai. Their evidence and passion will make a believer out of you.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book is completely horrible........2007-01-16

The fact that Cornuke lacks the letters PhD from his last name ought to tell you from the beginning that this book is not a credible source of Biblical archaeology. Cornuke can write a great adventure story, but this book screams more fiction than fact and reaks of irresponsibility. Biblical Archaeology is not done by taking a verse of scripture, then finding a landscape to match it. Cornuke's technique is as follows, "Oh look! A rock that is split! That must be where Moses struck the rock and water came out." The equivalent would be you walking out your front door and saying, "Look! A hill! That must be Gologtha!" This book is horrifically inaccurate and sensational, and barely believable. If Cornuke was credible his recommendation on the jacket wouldn't come from Nat'l Geographic Television. It would come from reputable archaeologists and scholars who would back his claim. Sadly this book is not credible, the reader gets duped, and he pockets your money. Look elsewhere for solid Biblical scholarship. But if you're in the mood for exciting fiction this is a good option.

5 out of 5 stars Mount Sinai has been hidden for Centuries--This Book Reveals It.......2006-08-06

Ever yearn for some armchair adventure? Bob Cornuke is a former SWAT investigator and now turned explorer and adventurer. In this highly readable book, IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD (Broadman & Holman Publishers) you can go along with Bob and Larry Williams as they search for the real location of Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments.

For centuries, many have believed Mt. Sinai was in Egypt and in fact a Monastery is built on this site. Yet the archeology and some other characteristics didn't fall into place. Bob Cornuke used the pages of his Bible as the guide to find the real Mt. Sinai, the altar where the Israelites offered the Golden Calf and the twelve springs of Elim.

The pages of Scripture spring to life as the reader catches the growing excitement and inspiration from every discovery. Also the reader will experience when Bob confronts a Holy God and the fact that he is standing on His mountain. "I recalled the stern admonition: 'Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.' (Exodus 19:12). The night before I had glibly dismissed the text--but now my heart was pounding. I felt sick. I believed at any moment a bolt from heaven would strike me down. Without thinking, I turned to Larry and barked an order, "Let's go--NOW! We have to get off this mountain."

Readers will love the armchair look at Biblical archeology from this storytelling adventurer. The photos and the information will capture your imagination and set you thinking for hours on end about the truth behind the pages of the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars REVIEWING SOME REVIEWERS.......2005-09-26

[Originally posted on 2004, May 6.]

I do quite a bit of reading with fairly critical eyes, and yet I don't hesitate to give IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD five stars. It is an exciting adventure story about a very significant subject. The evidence that Mr. Cornuke provides in support of his belief that Jabal al Lawz in Saudi Arabia is the REAL Mount Sinai is absolutely overwhelming. It is an excellent book that may very well challenge some of your previously held beliefs while it authenticates the historicity of the Bible's Old Testament.

What I primarily wish to do here is to correct some remarks in three of the other online reviews which I suspect might confuse others:

A READER FROM USA states that Jabal al Lawz cannot be the real Mount Sinai because Colin Humphreys evidently claims in his book, 'The Miracles Of Exodus', that Mount Sinai had to have been a volcano (due to its burning, smoking peak, and its trembling.) Yes, that would be true, but only if one feels compelled to attribute natural phenomena to all of the miracles described in The Bible. If a person accepts that God is quite capable of transcending His own creation, then finding a "rational" explanation for every miracle is not necessary, and probably fruitless. Because the circumstances on Mount Sinai when Moses met there with God describes what we commonly associate with volcanic activity, it does not at all follow that Mount Sinai MUST have been a volcano. God may heal a person of cancer, but that DOES NOT mean that God MUST be a surgeon.

WILLIAM E. THOMPSON seems to be reviewing two of Cornuke's books simultaneously and that is bound to cause confusion for those unfamiliar with the other book. The statement that the explorers should have (admittedly) returned to the site for further investigation is in regards to Cornuke's, 'In Search Of The Lost Mountains Of Noah', in which he relates his failure to locate Noah's Ark. Although Chapter Twenty-Six ('The Blood Of The Lamb') of that book is quite moving - in which the sacrifice of a lamb is compared with the sacrificial act of Jesus - I agree that the book ultimately should have been shelved until the author had legitimate evidence to offer. But that is no reason to avoid this superior book on the discovery of Mount Sinai.

In his review, ABUJIFAN far too easily dismisses the many indicators that point to Jabal al Lawz as the REAL Mount Sinai. He fails to address many of the historic landmarks that (coincidentally?!) happen to be in the same general location as the burnt Mountain, and also the coral reef that (conveniently) connects the lower tip of the Sinai Peninsula (across The Red Sea) with Saudi Arabia and the immediate area where all of these landmarks are found! He didn't mention the existence of the water-worn Split Rock (referenced in Exodus 17:5-6 and Isaiah 48:21 of The Bible) - an astonishing find! And he dismisses the photograph of the (presumed) Golden Calf Altar as a pile of rocks that "look like many naturally-occurring formations all over Western Arabia." Well, I've lived in the Southwestern U.S. all of my life, and unless rocks form quite differently in Arabia than they do here, that formation is hardly naturally-occurring, and I find it incredible that a person with a degree in archaeology would make such a claim. And therein, I suspect, is the rub. Is this a case of "professional jealousy"? Would it bother a pedigreed archaeologist if a testosterone-laden explorer armed with just his wits and his Bible made one of the greatest discoveries in the archaeologist's own backyard? Well, I don't know the answer to that, but I DO KNOW that 'IN SEARCH OF THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD: THE DISCOVERY OF THE REAL MOUNT SINAI' is a real page-turner and a Five Star book, doggone it! That's all I have to say; I'm gonna go climb back under my rock now and wait to see who finds me first, an archaeologist or an adventurer.

3 out of 5 stars disappointed a bit but also intrigued..........2005-06-08

I read the Search for the Missing Gold or whatever first and was VERY disappointed to see that this was basically the same story. Why couldn't they have presented the information in an orderly, systematic manner and not like a soap opera.

The good thing is that this should bring a lot of focus on the government of Saudi Arabia and why they don't cooperate with world-wide archaeology and quit acting like a medieval fiefdom.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting read, low scholarship, high on Bible integrity.......2005-01-02

This is an exciting tale told from the perspective of "hands on" explorers who read the Bible as accurate in matters of history. Written as an easy read, the book is very interesting but weak from a scholarship perspective. Still, the excitement captured by the authors makes this a good book to read, particularly if you are interested in lands of the Bible.

Mr. Cornuke is a dedicated Christian believer, as evidenced from his writings and the way he uses Scripture to guide his searches. He has a background in forensics, which makes for an interesting view from which to handle archaeological evidence. His conclusions are in disagreement with the traditional route of the Exodus, which places the Israelites wandering around in the Sinai Peninsula. The problem with the traditional assertion is the lack of evidence and common sense. I give Mr. Cornuke a lot of credit for breaking with the tradition, especially since the tradition is not based upon Biblical information.

Mr. Cornuke places the crossing of the Red Sea on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula (straits of Tiran), offering as evidence Bible verses and an underwater land bridge. He attempts to excavate drowned chariots, but claimed that water was too deep. As for Mt. Sinai, Mr. Cornuke places it in Saudi Arabia. He offers some photographic evidence, for example, pictures of an altar with c calf inscribed on it. Of course such evidence by itself is not conclusive. But his assertions fit the known geography of the land a lot better than the Sinai Peninsula. I'm convinced that Mt. Sinai is not in the Sinai Peninsula, and is located likely in Saudi Arabia, although I disagree with the mountain Mr. Cornuke chose.

The book is written from the perspective of an explorer and is a fast, exciting read. Although the level of scholarship in this book is a little weak, the book makes up for this somewhat because of the "take you there with me" mentality of the authors. You really feel as if you are along with them, making the discoveries as you go through the ancient lands. If you would like a more detailed work that comes to similar conclusions (ie Sinai is located in Arabia), I would recommend the book "The Miracles of Exodus" by Colin Humphreys. This book offers a lot more scholarship, and retains the "take you there with me" mentality.

Book Description

The decline and instability of the financial market has led to a white-hot market in real estate. Millions of investors are moving their money from equities to real estate. As the rate of transactions increases sellers are discovering that there are some tax surprises associated with selling real estate. The two primary tax considerations are capital gains and recapture of depreciation. Between the two, Federal and State taxes can be as much as one third of the profit on the sale of a property. Both individual investors and real estate professionals can discover legal methods for deferring or eliminating these taxes by reading this book. Selling Real Estate Without Paying Taxes is a non-technical, plain-English look at the various ways to avoid taxes when selling real estate. It explores both tax deferral and elimination methods, discusses the pros and cons of each, and gives examples of how each method works in everyday practice. This book will be a valuable tool for individuals and professionals so that they can make the most out of each real estate transaction.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and to the point.......2005-09-30

This book answered all my tax and property questions quickly and precisely. It was well written and perfect for someone who is not a CPA or property specialist. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best real estate tax book. Period. .......2004-09-18

I have read a number of books about real estate tax planning, and this is by far the best. It is clear, to the point, and very readable. The author goes through the basics of how a capital gains basis is calculated, rules about stepping up basis, primary residence exclusion rules, etc. He then discusses various ways of deferring or eliminating capital gain consequences via 1031, installment sales, private annuity trusts, charitable remainder trusts and Roth IRAs. The chapter on private annuity trusts is one of the least known, yet most valuable strategies that exists. Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2003-09-10

This book is very well written; logically organized and concise. The information is priceless! For the cost of this book you could be saving 30% of your capital gains money! That's what I call positive ROI. This book is a must have!

I was extremely happy to find a "How To "book that got right to the point. It is obvious that the author has "Been There, Done That".
The technical explanations were clear and thorough.
There are alot of new (to me) and interesting approaches on how to structure transactions. Annuities,IRA's etc.
Easy read,a lot of useable content.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Estate.......2006-07-17

This book is definitely a must have for those who want to learn the world of real estate investing. I found it extremely helpful and very easy reading. I found it very inspiring and will definitely go back to it again and again for advice.

4 out of 5 stars Wish I read this before I sold my first home.......2006-04-12

This was a good basic introduction on WHY real esate is a good investment...I don't personally think it should be 100% of a person's portfolio, so the reader needs to be very careful and not get carried away into thinking 'real esate is where it's at'! Just like the stock market, RE experiences cycles too.

Having said that, this book was very educational in terms of getting me to think outside the box. I wish we had this book prior to selling our first home that we bought. Our mortgage would've been low (less than $1k) in So. CA(!) and I'm sure we would've been able to rent it out for double that! Had I read this book, we would've either rented it out...or fire the sleazy realtor that ripped us off! We learned from that mistake and by reading these types of books...hopefully we'll make better decisions in the future. For this education alone, I'd recommend you read this, take it w/ a grain of salt (in terms of striking it rich ONLY in RE) and use this info. to make the best decision for your situation.

4 out of 5 stars Good Common Sense, Practical Advice.......2006-02-02

Dolf talks about how real estate blows the doors off other investment vehicles because of the leverage available. The book is a bit basic and conceptual, but for those investors either just getting started in real estate or thinking about it, this book will give you the push needed. It explains how the returns can be explosive on the capital invested because of the use of leverage. It's true, understanding how the implications of leverage affect total return is very important, however I would have likes more real life examples. In my book, A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate, I go over in detail deal after deal to illustrate this point.

Another key concepts covered are: productivity, and how it is affecting middle America, oceanfront or seaside property, and how it appreciates 50% more than other areas and the time needed to look at 100 properties before finding a real deal. All these are must know for the real estate investors of tomorrow.

This book as well as the others in the Rich Dad series are great starting points. I read all that were available while building my real estate company which went from $0 to $25,000,000 in holdings in less than 5 years.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dull and disappointing.......2005-06-11

I bought this book because I am an investor in REITS and wanted to get a deeper insight into comparing different REITs to find the best ones to invest in. I wanted to be able to read the balance sheets of several different REITs and decide which is the better investment. This book left me bored and no further forward.

The main problem is that each chapter is written by a different "expert" on a particular topic such as "Asset Allocation" or "Institutional Investing". Firstly these experts may be great money managers but they are dull writers without a jot of personality. The chapter on Tax Treatment of REITs is a lifeless regurgitation of the tax code. Worse, the editors did not steer each contributor strictly enough to avoid repetition and as a result every chapter begins with yet another review of REIT history.

There was no analysis of different REIT business models, such as trading CMOs compared with Residential or Office space. There is no analysis of how to tell good REIT managers from ordinary ones. I was optimistic about the chapter on Asset Allocation to see how REITs fit in with stock and bonds in your portfolio but again I was disapppointed. After grinding through page after page differential equations the chapter fizzled out with no mention of reccomended asset allocation ratios.

I gave the book 2 stars instead of none because the data seems to be accurate and authoritative but then so is the maintenance manual for my vacuum cleaner. A $75 book has a duty to do more than assemble boring facts in sequence.

I don't really know who this book is targeted towards. If you are going to be a junior paper pusher employed by a REIT it may give you a head start but the rest of the planet should look somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the REIT Industry.......1999-07-17

The book provided an insightful overview of the REIT industry. The book was organized by various topics relating to investing and managing a REIT. The chapters were written by practioners and academics working in the different REIT industry areas. The authors were able to provide vital insights into their areas of expertise. As a new REIT employee I learned about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for my company and the REIT industry as a whole. some of the chapters were a bit technical in nature; particularly the analysis on historical private verses public REIT returns. Overall the book should be required reading for REIT investors and Managers as well.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-02-28

I found (most of) this book to be extremely helpful as I entered the realm of buying real estate. Some of the tips are geared towards investment properties, but I found it to be a great source of information for anyone interested in purchasing property. This may not be ideal for someone with extensive knowledge, but it was great for my purpose, which was learning a little more about how things work and tricks to keep from losing your shirt in a real estate deal.

    4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2005-03-17

I read this book in its entirety. I liked it very much. It gives concise, direct, and objective advice to the novice. I do not see how someone may give this book 1 star. At least this book is useful.

3 out of 5 stars The author writes like a used car salesman.......2004-06-23

The author writes like a hustler who is trying to con you into believing he is something he isn't. From the quality of the information in this book, the author certainly seems to understand mortgage. Yet, the street-wise tone of the author actually curbs his own credibility. He uses phrases such as "Avoid the bang of a bursting balloon","How to borrow jumbo amounts without paying jumbo rates", and "[author] simplifies complicated math...[and] make sure your loan rep is being honest with you". Such lingo belongs in an infomercial. Beyond his own hoopla, the book does contain valuable information. Just don't buy into his own hype.

5 out of 5 stars Wealth of knowledge for the amateur.......2004-06-03

I am new to real estate investing and I have minor experience as a loan officer. This book provides in depth detail and easy to understand knowledge on the most effective ways to obtain the correct mortgage financing for an individual based on their situation or need. The books also gives you a great amount of resources to obtain more help and knowledge on the subject of mortgages. I would highly recommend this book, and I might also add it is very easy to read and comprehend the concepts discussed in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and objective guide.......2004-02-04

I just closed a loan on my first home and I found this book to be a helpful guide. It's not as sensationalistic as the title might imply, but it prepared me to know what questions to ask and how to get my credit, income, and bills in shape before I put in my loan application. Although I took out a new loan, this book goes into assumptions, seller financing, and other financing choices that I didn't know much about. I think a lot of people looking to buy might find these alternatives worthwhile. Overall, a profitable read.
P.S. This book is not an "infomercial" or "get rich quick" hype. It also strongly warns against misleading a lender--none of the advice is "fraudulent." I find it interesting to read other reviews and sometimes wonder if they actually read the book they are reviewing. Not just here, but with many other popular authors. Oh well, such is life.
