Nonlinear Oscillations is a self-contained and thorough treatment of the vigorous research that has occurred in nonlinear mechanics since 1970. The book begins with fundamental concepts and techniques of analysis and progresses through recent developments and provides an overview that abstracts and introduces main nonlinear phenomena. It treats systems having a single degree of freedom, introducing basic concepts and analytical methods, and extends concepts and methods to systems having degrees of freedom. Most of this material cannot be found in any other text. Nonlinear Oscillations uses simple physical examples to explain nonlinear dispersive and nondispersive waves. The notation is unified and the analysis modified to conform to discussions. Solutions are worked out in detail for numerous examples, results are plotted and explanations are couched in physical terms. The book contains an extensive bibliography.

best introduction to architectural acoustics.......2007-08-15
Even after having collected and read quite a few of the modern textbooks on architectural acoustics, Egan's Architectural Acoustics (1988 hardback edition in my case) still stands as the most accessible first foray into the subject. I frequently use this book in my consulting practice when I need to illustrate a fundamental concept, such as sound isolation, auditorium shaping, or the basic acoustical conditions necessary to support various styles of music. Even though the binding has mechanically failed, I have not yet been able to bring myself to part with the book long enough to have it rebound. Perhaps the new softcover binding will actually hold up better to repeated reading, as this book will surely receive and deserve!
Use This Book!.......2000-11-12
Since first encountering Egan's text a little more than 20 years ago, I've continued to return to it for solid information. Complex material is presented in a way that allows me to apply it to unique conditions at hand. Some of the world-class acoustics consultants with which we've had the privilege to work rely on Egan to help communicate complex ideas. Without compromising too much real technical nuance, the ideas are so clearly communicated that I was able to offer the book to members of a church in eastern Europe working to improve the condition of their worship space.
Excellent book for architects.......2000-09-01
I am an acoustical consultant... I have read a lot of books onarchitectural acoustics. I found this book unique of its kind. The concepts are introduced by plenty of figures and illustrations with informative text that make the discussed subject easy to read and comprehend especially by the architects. Writing on the figures and using checklists added a lot of understandibility. Also the text itself is informative and directly address the subject. In other words, the book is excellent and comprehensive.

I'm a architecture student and I think this book is like a bible of acoustics in architecture. It brings detailed info for designing places with good acoustic performance whit various technics and for the most different type of places like a simple residential to auditoriums and concert rooms. I have other acoustics books (like William Cavanaugh's) and they always make mention to David Egan's book. If you're in search on books about architectural acoustics, I think that must be the first one to buy. It's a must have in any architect biblioteque.
Excellent source for beginner and professional.......2000-05-04
A really excellent introduction and overview of architecturalacoustics from the point of view of an architect. Little in the way ofmathematics, excellent illustrations, very useful tables, a convenientlist of often used formulae in the back. The best book I know of for an introductory textbook. I use this book often. Topics covered include:

Take the little good with the mainly mediocre.......2007-08-11
This volume, like the others in the series, is mainly chord strumming. There are a couple of pieces for which single notes, and embellished and partial chords are used. These arrangements are worthwhile, but the majority are pretty shallow and best for comping. When you play them, the song may be recognizable, but it won't be melodically complete.
One problem that is common to so many of this type of CD accompanied books, is that the guitar part in never offered in complete isolation. Percussion and other musical support sounds fine for listening, but to best learn the piece, a clean solo would be more helpful. I think the percussion, etc. is included to mask that weak arrangements of the strumming songs.

Major improvements are using the source-filter in place of spring resonance model and fine tutorials on digital speech processing. An excellent first text for the student phonetician. For more advanced students use my 1999 text. J.M. Pickett.

This is one of the first (apart from the Helmholtz's 'sensations of tone' and Tyndall's 'sound') books published in the field of acoustics. Many of the topics in this book are the research results of Lord Rayleigh himself. The book is written in a very logical manner. Any acoustician who wants to understand physical principles should start with Rayleighs work. Although some of the results from this book are well established and used by some of the advanced prediction computer codes (Rayliegh's quotient e.t.c) today, the devolopment of the theory fascinates us to understand and use the codes well.
Sofie Germain, Willmore and Chladni all live on in sound.......2003-03-10
Vibrating plates, rods, membranes , their equations and the solutions are here in these books.
About the only real place that I've ever found anything on Chladni standing waves.
Since much of this work isn't his originally, presenting it in a way that even a beginner can follow is very much one of the master works of classic physics.
That the book could be more readable is my only complaint.

These books, published first in 1877, contain the fundamental and basic theory for all those who work with vibrations and acoustics. The first book covers mechanical vibrations and the second book covers sound. Rayleigh's principle was published here.
