Book Description
The market-leading text for the Elementary School Music Methods course, INTEGRATING MUSIC IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM was the first to emphasize the theme of integrating music throughout the school day. Anderson and Lawrence show future educators how to make music an effective part of the entire elementary curriculum. The text introduces the songs, instruments, sources of age-appropriate music, and methods of making music in a multicultural environment--making the text perfect for students with no prior knowledge of the fundamentals of music. With easy-to-use techniques for teaching young children how to sing, play instruments, move to music, create music, listen to music, and understand music, this text relates music to all subject areas. Notably, the authors provide sample lesson plans for kindergarten through grade six, along with more than 150 songs from different cultures and historical periods.

Book Description
In this elegantly written, passionately argued book, Fowler presents a convincing case for teaching the arts to all children. He argues that, far from a luxury, the arts are a vitally important part of our society and our schools. Highlighting the crucial effect of the arts on learning, this volume shows how the arts can enliven and extend the entire school curriculum by integrating different subjects in innovative interdisciplinary ways. These eighteen compelling essays are a clarion call to action for any teacher, parent, policy maker, or citizen concerned about the fate of the arts in American society and schools.
Customer Reviews:
Ideas for rescue the arts.......2005-10-12
The best from this book is the idea to let the industry people to understand the importance of the arts for the job scenario. Mr. Fowler is very focused and well centered in his proposal. As an educator-artist, I have been talking about the same idea but few understand the point; the idea of pushing the arts and it's uniqueness to the academic structure can be a self destructive idea. Let's open our minds and put the effort where it's neccessary. Just read and follow the instructions!

Customer Reviews:
Practical and Comprehensive.......2007-01-15
Music In Childhood was the textbook for two classes I took during my undergrad - Methods for Early Childhood Music and Methods for Middle Childhood Music. Both were really important segments of my music ed. degree. Even though I will never be more than a private piano instructor, I found this textbook to be packed with vital help about children and their ability to learn music - bottom line. I don't ever plan on teaching school and I am quite happy with my piano studio, but there are some things that are universal in teaching music and this text seems to highlight each and every one of them. I didn't hang on to any of my conducting books or vocal methods books, but this one I kept. I have used it many times as a reference and I know I'll use it in the future. This is almost essential to any music teacher out there, whether you're in the schools or simply have a private studio like I do.
Music education.......2006-11-06
Lots of information on different areas of music education for children, a good resource.
Very Good, Must Read for any elementary Music Teacher.......2003-01-17
This book is excellent, very comprehensive. It was used as the textbook for my teaching elementary music class. I will keep it in my library forever, lots of valuable information for the early music education of young students.

Book Description
This is the perfect book for those who want to understand why musical nurturing is important in children aged birth to eight years and how this can be accomplished in an easy and fun manner. Specific activities instruct the reader on singing, moving, playing and listening to music with young children. Supplemental material on understanding basic musical elements and terms gives the reader a comfort level if this subject is new to them.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent source for parents and early childhood educators.......2007-02-25
As a future educator I believe this book is an excellent source for anyone who has or teaches children. The terminology is easy to follow and the whole layout of the book is great. It not only gives you wonderful ideas on using music with your child but it shows you. I believe the revised edition should include prenatal music nurturing as a chapter and not just an appendix in the back along with a CD of some of the recordings. This is definitely a book I will use over and over again. I recommend this book 100%.
An excellent book full of wonderful information.......2007-02-24
I am currently using this book in an Early Childhood Music class in Clermont, FL. This book is full of countless ideas for using music with young children. It is written in terminology that is easy to read and understand. I also believe that prenatal chapter needs to be included since music starts before birth, and a CD with examples of the music for the labs would be very helpful for those that are not taking the class. I have recommended this book to parents with young children.

Very useful book.......2007-01-06
I used this book for a class so it was a required buy. I was happy when I realized it would be a book that I will be using for reference in the future and not another wasted buy.

Worth it's weight in gold.......2007-08-24
Someone gave me this book my first year of teaching. I have now taught music for 6 years, and have used this book every year. Each song is notated musically, and accompanied by the game and a short introduction as to the origins. I also teach Kindermusik, and can see that many of our activities must have been taken right out of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and although I wish you great luck in finding it for under $100, or at the library, you wont be disappointed if you spend the money.
great resource.......2002-01-12
This book has a wide variety of different musical games, all of which are singing and movement games. Perfect for the Kodaly educator. Many of the games can be found in more readily available and inexpensive resources, however, so try to get titles before you buy.

Very good resource for Composer Units!.......2000-10-16
This book offers a fairly wide selection of activities for almost any composer project or unit. Each activity is grouped by the type of skill used; i.e. Creative Drawing or Enrichment Activities. The skill level is also included: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. The activities are interesting and are fun for the students. Most of the activities however, are geared toward beginner and intermediate levels, and would be best used with elementary students; there are not as many for the upper grades. Other than that this book is well thought out and well put together, a very good resource for teaching composers to students and incorporating some writing/research/drawing skills as well!

Customer Reviews:
Full of Great Stuff.......2006-11-05
This book is jammed with great ideas for music classes or for any elementary school class where the teacher wants to inject a little fun. If you can get past the author's "controlling nature" -- she basically tries to tell you what clothes to wear and how to say "good morning, class" -- it will be well worth your while. I teach music in Los Angeles and use this book constantly.
A great resource.......2006-01-09
I agree with earlier reviewers, this book is a great resource for the music teacher but is not for you if you are looking for ready-made lesson plans. It's formatted in a very user friendly way and I especially love the warm-ups.
Very useful book.......2004-10-11
This is a useful book for music educator who works with big classes. However if you are looking for ready-to-use lesson plans this book is not for you. The core idea is how to teach rather than what to teach. The author shares her ideas on classroom management, and presents various teaching strategies on how to introduce the material. I used some of the ideas from this book in the classroom. They worked like magic!
No one knew I was not the magician. Thank you, Ms. Lavender.
Sensible Resource for Elementary School Teachers.......2004-08-21
I'm an elementary school music teacher for an Asian country, and I must say that this book has been a very useful resource and I do not regret buying it.
The cons of this book is that stuff like classroom management techniques are highly cultural sensitive - so it is definitely more suitable for the context of American classrooms.
However, many of the teaching techniques mentioned will definitely inspire you to make your lessons more interesting for children. They also seem to correspond quite closely with the 'learning through doing' techniques for teaching music to children that I was highly ingrained with during my pre-service training.
In short, this book is a sensible read and resource for elementary school music teachers who wish to inject a more creative approach towards teaching in their classrooms. It far beats some of those books which boast of a 101 music games etc etc which leave you with a feeling that you are running a circus rather than a music class.
