Customer Reviews:
Great Text.......2006-06-27
I found this book after being disgusted with the required text for my methods class. This is a great text! Praxis PLT & INTASC concepts are covered in every chapter. A lot of detail on classroom management, direct & indirect strategies, discipline, assessment, grading, working with parent and colleagues, differentiating instruction and planning. It also goes into a little history of educational reform, Goals 2000, and "A Nation at Risk" which were actually topics during an interview for a job.
This text should be a required reading for all methods classes. In fact, my peers are now reading it to prepare for the PLT.

Book Description
Two world wars, the Civil Rights movement, and a Jheri curl later, Blacks in America continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair. From the antebellum practice of shaving the head in an attempt to pass as a "free" person to the 1998 uproar over a White third-grade teacher's reading of the book Nappy Hair, the issues surrounding Black hair linger as we enter the twenty-first century.Tying the personal to the political and the popular, Hair Story takes a chronological look at the culture behind the ever-changing state of Black hair-from fifteenth century Africa to the present-day United States. Hair Story is the book that Black Americans can use as a benchmark for tracing a unique aspect of their history and that people of all races will celebrate as the reference guide for understanding Black hair.AUTHORBIO: Ayana D. A chronological look at the culture & politics behind the ever-changing state of Black hair from 15th-century Africa to the present-day U.S., the book ties the personal to the political & the popular. It covers the different chemical & natural treatments to straighten hair; how the Afro evolved from militant style to mainstream fashion trend; & what prompted the creation of the Jheri curl & its fall from grace. Major figures in the history of Black hair are presented, from early entrepreneurs Annie Turnbo Malone & Madam C.J. Walker to unintended hair heroes like Angela Davis & Bob Marley. Stylists, celebrities & critics weigh in on the issues of Black hair
Customer Reviews:
Bravo.......2007-08-12
Excellent book about black hair and black culture. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about both and how they relate to the "American" ideal.
A Must-Read for Black Women Everywhere.......2007-07-05
I've recently made the decision to go natural and as I did, I pondered, "Why do I have to 'decide' to be the way I naturally am?" It was then that I realized how unfortunate it was that black women, more than half, find their "naturalness" to be unattractive. I myself have gone through hair extensions, braids, and the dreaded relaxer that has damaged my hair and scalp for years. Now I wonder what it was all for. I wasn't being true to who I was.
This book helped be to know something that I should have already known: my hair. The history of black hair is one that is very interesting and telling. I learned more about my hair in this book than I have ever learned, even from members of my own family. There is also a sense of confidence one gets from reading books like these. I am letting all of my friends and family read it as well.
You will not be disappointed in your purchase.
A beginning..........2007-01-10
This book is great begining for people that are redescovering themselfes aftermaking the decision or are trying to decide wheter go natural or not. It helps you to understand how we got here , how black beauty is not well accepted and why. It make you wonder, questionning yourself and others, and in my case keep learning.
Very informative.......2006-11-19
If you don't already know, this book is definitely worth the time that it takes to read. The book goes into detail about the history of Black hair. Prior to slavery, Africans took pride in their hair. The intricate braid designs date back to that time. It wasn't until after the slave trade that hair straightening became common. Also, it's a little known black history fact that Annie Tumbo Malone was the first black woman entrepeneur to market black hair products. Madame CJ Walker actually worked for Malone before going into business for herself. This book chronicles so much history about Black hair. After reading this book, I was really encouraged to stop chemically processing my hair.
Every Black Woman Needs to Read This.......2005-10-07
I love this book so much. Ayana Byrd really did a thorough job in researching both the psycological and spiritual elements involved in this subject of "Black Hair".
We as African American women are so misguided sometimes about what's beautiful. We've been so scarred from distorted generational beliefs that we've allowed the insecurity of ourselves and the fear of loving who we are to become deeply rooted in our spirits. We listen to those beliefs, accept them, and then pass them down to our daughters to let the cycle of ignorance continue.
I personally had to read this book a few times while I was going through my own journey of growing out my naturally tight curls - just constantly trying to cleanse my spirit and renew my mind in what I considered beautiful. After reading this book, I realized that God wanted me (needed me) to stop relaxing my hair with chemicals, and to start embracing His wonderful creativity of me - to accept myself (including my hair) the way he designed so that I can love myself the way He loves me.
Every Black Woman needs to read this book.

Customer Reviews:
The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Naked strips away all the mystery surrounding the thoughts held by black women about their bodies. Often raised in a subculture that is not tolerant of a woman sharing their fears, reservations and insecurities about their bodies African American ladies have had to long keep their thoughts to themselves, at least until now. Often over-sexualized in music and videos, Naked sheds a rainbow of light on the way black women from all walks of life, view their bodies, from Melyssa Ford and Jill Scott to a former prostitute and a house wife, this anthology has it all. With short essays like "My Tush" and "Ho Gear", this promises to be a quick enjoyable read for anyone.
1. What did you like best about this book?
I absolutely loved that this book was written by women, for other women. Some of the stories in here express thoughts and feelings that are often not talked about and mostly not accepted. It was very refreshing to see the stories of our women in print.
2. What did you dislike about this book?
I felt that the editors did a great job in being selective about what they put in the book but I still feel a few stories could have been left out.
3. How can the author improve this book?
I think the book would be even better if the editors could somehow swap out a few stories.
The Truth.......2007-08-12
I thought the majority of these essays we so true. Sadly, the truth provided me with some comfort because I was able to think, "Thank God I'm not the only one who feels this way!" I identified with a lot of these storied and it's given me hope that one day I can overcome my issues with my self and body image.
Illl finish by saying I am SORRY.......2007-06-19
I am a black man. Five days ago I received a copy of this book from by cousin. I've only reached half way but I HAD to stop.
There were some passage about how BLACK WOMEN felt hurt and unwanted by verbal abuse of men when they were walking in the streets and I felt bad, because I am one of those guys cussing when a women doesn't give in to my advances. I walk around with friends and I often cuss just as to show off to my friends that "hey that B*** didn't hurt me with her stupid attitude".
The thing I never thought about is how they felt when I cuss them out. Even if my intention was not to add yet another blow to her lowself-esteem. I might sound green by now to some readers but I first off come from the carribean. And there the inferiority complex is not that extreme over there since the majority of the population and business owners are black. But I must add, ormaybe confess I would be more likely to cuss a black women then any other race. And that alone shows that I am part of the problem.
For those who need more convincing argument of the dilemma which Naked exposes, BLACK SKIN WHITE MASK, by Fanon is a support to this book.
But I have to agree with some essay where they says the media, hell society has a fix definition of what beauty is and should look like. Even disney movies like Cinderella, snow white, etc..... brings to our children mind what is expect of their physical appearance to be considered attractive.
I'll try to mustard courage to finish this book AND I'll finsih by saying I am SORRY to all those women I hurt with my foul words. A change is definitely needed '
naked..............2007-04-03
I also finished most of the essays in Naked, soon after purchasing it. The various thoughts, and emotions that the women in this collection have gone through are both shocking, and yet not surpising at all. Having dealt with my fair share of black women, I've come to almost accept their multitued of "lets say" spiritual ailments. Far too often, we allow the outside world to dictate who we are, and what beauty is...I'd definitly suggest everyone to pick up this book. As a man, I can honesetly say that I have more appreciation for the sane sista's that I've come across after reading Naked.
Could not put this down! Highly recommended.......2007-02-28
I picked this up on a whim at my library. This book offered way more than I originally expected.
The various narrations revealed a glimpse into the many insecurities many women of all nationalities face each and everyday. Particularly the plight of the African American woman. Who is often perceived as strong willed and to have a "don't take no mess" attitude. We suffer from the same insecurities, eating disorders, mental illnesses and sense of inferiority that our White sisters often are more vocal about.
Its a double edged sword being a woman in a man's world as well being Black in a White world.
This book upon reading it gave me a significant boost in my self esteem (I'm a Mom to a two year old and still have yet to lose the "baby" weight).
As women, we are sometimes our worst critic and sometimes you just have to be reminded that you are beautiful no matter what others outside your world believe.

Small Business Management, Fifth Edition, takes a practical and down-to-earth approach to planning, organizing, and running a small business. While employing current research and theory, Small Business Management takes a pragmatic "how-to" perspective illustrating many practical examples and applications from the business world. Book Description
Today Blacks live five to seven fewer years than Whites. Black infant mortality is 2.2 times that of Whites. Blacks lead in death rates in 14 of 16 leading diseases, many preventable. Diabetes is 33% more common in Blacks, and cancer mortality has increased 50% for Blacks since 1950 but only 10% for Whites. Breakthroughs such as vaccinations, invasive cardiac procedures, cancer therapies, MRIs, and organ transplants have dramatically improved the health of Americans in the last century, but health care for African Americans has been dangerously deficient, even unavailable.
An American Health Dilemma is the first comprehensive effort to place African Americans'deficit health in its full socio-cultural context. In the highly anticipated volume two, Byrd and Clayton complete the story begun in the first Pulitzer Prize nominated volume, bringing us from the turn of the century to the health care disparities that persist even now.
Backed by exhaustive research, Byrd and Clayton argue thatrace- and class-based inequities, bias, and inequalities are systemic, culturally embedded problems that in the last hundred years have been marked by small gains, disastrous setbacks, and a passive acceptance of African Americans, and other disadvantaged groups, as a permanent health underclass. Even gains made in the 1960s, they maintain, didn't do enough to advance the health care of African Americans.
A monumental and original work of scholarship, An American Health Dilemma will be the essential reference about the Black medical and health experience for years to come.

excellent material for all forest activists.......2000-06-08
Forest activists often hear the argument, "What is Old Growth?" This book helps to distinguish these valuable ecosystems. The book covers everything from fauna and flora that habitat these areas to the spiritual value of the remaining old growth in the Eastern United States.
This book is essential for activists and ecologists everywhere.

Traps is the first anthology of writings by 19th- and 20th-century African American men on the overlapping categories of race, gender, and sexuality. Monolithic constructions of gender and sexuality, reinforced by sexism and historical sanctioned homophobia, are the "traps" that give this book its focus and its title.
Authors include: Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Bayard Rustin, Manning Marable, Derrick Bell, James Baldwin, Charles Johnson, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Huey Newton, Cornel West, and Kalamu ya Salaam.
