i pod & i Tunes for Dummies.......2007-04-11
I am a first time I pod owner. My children had to teach me a lot of things to get started, but even they haven't been able to tell me all I want to know. This book has been a big help.
iPod &iTunes For Dummies.......2007-04-05
After receiving an iPod as a gift and being electronically challenged, I borrowed several books from the library on iPods. This was by far the most informative, up to date and easy to use. It's a great "go to" book .
iPod and iTunes for Dummies.......2007-04-03
The problem I was looking for wasn't answered in the book or on the Apple or Microsoft web sites. It isn't a direct instructional book. I had to fumble my way through it and trail and error was the only way I got the answers.

Great Purchase.......2007-09-08
Because of the reviews of others on Amazon I decided to take a look at this book and then I purchased it. Filled with tons of information. Easy to read, understand, explained well and enjoyable. You cannot go wrong with this book. I doubt even the inexperienced will have any problems using an iPod after reading this.
A must have.......2007-06-09
As with any other piece of hardware, you can blunder through, but after spending a lot for the i-pod, get a good guide, as thi is it.
pretty good stuff for an IPod beginner.......2007-05-13
Easy to follow along with your ipod in hand. Everything that I wanted to know about getting up and running with my iPod, and quite enjoyable too
Great!.......2007-02-08
I just purchased a used iPod, and this book is much better than the manual. I just got the book, so am just starting to look through it, but I kn ow I'll refer to it many times. Highly recommended for an absolute beginner like me.
Easy to understand, well written, highly recommended.......2004-12-11
I highly recommend this book to get a grasp on all the features of the fabulous Ipod. The author obviously has a good grasp in writing technical manuals. Well organized, easy to understand, bits of appropriate humor....this book will leave you with a great understanding of the workings of the Ipod, and well on your way to becoming a power user.

Enticing mystery.......2007-09-15
In the tradition of Nick Bantock, it is an artful mystery more complex than many of his other works (all of which I intend to collect). It is short and combines both the metaphysical and curious ancient artifacts from other cultures. I am taken on a journey and led to think of possible connections between the items. I am sure I will reread this work many times. Each time finding something new. It's a journey in intimate archeology. I wonder what someone would think of me if they looked through my life's souveniers?
Beautiful and atmospheric.......2005-09-12
For those of you trying to get hold of this (as of 2005) out of print volume, I recommend ebay or abebooks. I paid only US$12 for a very nice used copy and I treasure it.
From an artistic point of view it's really a breathtaking little volume. Bantock really does put a lot of care and thought into his constructions and collages and you can spend hours examining them (as an engineer I like that sort of art!)
I did cheat and look up the answer, but for puzzle fans I would recommend sticking with it a while. I did notice that all the drawers had different patterns on the edges which appeared to be coordinates, and figured out that Ln and Wd meant lenght and width, but besides that some of the clues were truly puzzling. But then I worked on Riven for weeks and finally had to look up a cheat to finish it...
In any case, as popular as Bantock's other works are I am surprised that it hasn't been reprinted recently. If I am decoding the publishers page correctly I think that mine is a third printing, but that is not a negative since I enjoy the book collectible or not.
WHY did I ever lend this book out?.......2003-07-07
It was never returned, and I mourn its absence.
To me, The Egyptian Jukebox is the "Myst" of book puzzles. With a central theme that mixes Egyptology with Rock & Roll, woven together with intriguing little trinkets, cryptic narration, and a deceivingly simple riddle to solve ("Where do my worlds join?"), it will draw in anyone who ever dreamed of solving an ancient mystery or unearthing a lost treasure.
Many with short attention spans will discard The Egyptian Jukebox before long. There are no instructions explaining how to even begin. But if you are a creative thinker and problem solver (and perhaps just a little obsessive), this puzzle will be both amusing and rewarding. The solution will amuse you, but like a favorite novel, will leave you wishing that the book never came to an end.
A fascinating, if not exactly stupefying, puzzle.......2000-07-01
If you enjoy puzzles which carefully interweave illustration and prose, this is a good pick. The puzzle is challenging enough not to be boring, but it's not mind-numbingly hard like some others (notably Christopher Manson's "Maze," the only book of this genre I've liked better than this one). The illustrations are beautiful, and the aura of enigma created by the puzzle enticing. The only drawback I would cite is that once you make a certain intuitive leap in the puzzle's trickery, a bit of busy work lies before you to finish. But reaching that leap is reward enough. A good pick, if you can track it down.
Why arn't you people reprinting this book!.......2000-03-18
I want to read this book very much but it has told me the same this for months, that it is not avalible! If any one knows where to get this book else where email me! locust@snet.net

Terrible.......2007-03-20
Not to go against the curve here, but I must say this book is a complete waste of money. Any idiot can figure out half of the "secrets" mentioned in this book. The author also wastes about half of the book explaining how to do such mundane tasks as installing itunes and charging your ipod. DO NOT BUY YOU CAN FIND ALL THESE ANSWERS ONLINE WITHIN MINUTES.
The True Missing Manual Revealed.......2005-04-02
Whether you just purchased an iPod or have had one for years, you NEED THIS BOOK! This book is the true "Missing Manual." I have bought and returned a lot of books regarding my beloved iPod. This book covers it all in one book. I haven't seen anything like it, and believe me, I have been looking!
You think you know everything about iPods? Want to know how to "do something?" This is your book. I say this because I considered myself a intermediate expert (if such a term exists) helping my friends set up both their iPod and iTunes, fielding ongoing questions, suggesting cool accessory websites, etc, but this book showed me some stuff.
Got an iPod? Get the book!
The one to Buy!!.......2005-01-09
I've bought 3 other iPod books. Two were to basic but had some goodies and one was a "waste" in my opinion.
The iPod & iTunes book by Kirk REALLY adds to my knowledge base and shows he KNOWS(!) the iPod and iTunes. He goes beyond a simple product manual and tells you HOW TO GET THINGS DONE.
I highly recommend the book and ask why it took so long to come out.
Thanks Kirk!
Mac-like Approach to Learning.......2005-01-08
Anytime someone can make learning how to make software and hardware interesting and fun its worth a read.
After purchasing an iPod and struggling to make it do what I knew it was supposed to do, I scoured the book stores for a book that would show me the way. I found Kirk's fun and intuitive approach (very Mac-like) to be perfect. As a long time Apple user, and often times under utilizer of software (because I hate to read manuals). It was refreshing to find someone that gets it, and writes a book for those of us that need a little humor with our how-to. Check out is webpage too.
Another added plus... I e-mailed Kirk for a little extra help, and to my amazement he responded, timely too. With the many iPod and iTune books out there, this is one to be by your side while the others stay in the store.
Buy this Book! Not just another computer manual.......2005-01-08
Let me say this straight out - computer books are pointless, they are either of the 'for dummies' variety, printed versions of a manual [presumably to encourage software piracy] or for techies by techies...THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT! Why? Well because the author loves music and he talks about music throughout, he [and other guest] even review music and after all what is the iPod about but love of music and the freedom to have your music where and when you wish...sure it is a clever device, clever design, etc. but leave the technical stuff for people who love technology and the design for those for whom the packaging is the thing - for the rest of us we have music. Clearly the book isn't just a compilation of reviews that might have appeared in NME or Rolling Stone [or Relix] but the appreciation of music, the passion to try and get people to try different types of music runs all the way through the book. Yes it does all you might expect from a book on the iPod [and iTunes]|: it guides the user from basics to advanced tweaks [mercifully more advanced than the this is a button, this is a scroll wheel, type of 'for dummies' stuff], but never more than a few pages go by and there is another section on some record or artist.
Grateful Dead, Brian Eno, Joy Division, Durutti Column, Steve Reich, Bill Evans - all here.
Now if I have one suggestion to the author it is to apply his technological knowledge and love of music to the wider subject of online music sharing and downloading. That will be a second 'computer book' worth buying.

One of Burke's series of crime stories set in the Louisiana bayou country, this story chronicles the difficult mission of Sheriff's Deputy Dave Robicheaux to confirm the guilt of a redneck named Aaron Crown in the killing of a civil rights leader back in the 1960s, and to find out what Crown's recent arrest has to do with an upcoming gubernatorial election. His task becomes mired in the history and inbred politics of New Iberia and thwarted by a ghoulish hit man who crawls out of the swamps to silence police informants. A wild story with enough oddball characters to make it interesting and worthwhile.
Book Description
When former Klansman and piney-woods outcast Aaron Crown is imprisoned for a decades old murder, his former friend Dave Robicheaux finds himself believing in Crown's innocence. Then a Hollywood filmmaker who has taken up Crown's case is found murdered, and the most villainous character Burke has created to date, Mookie Zerrang, brings his bloody agenda to the Cajun wetlands of South Louisiana.

Burke does it again.......2007-06-15
James Lee Burke in Cadillac Jukebox does an excellent job of describing the corruption in Louisiana politics that has been around for years. This book kept me on the edge of my seat wondering where it was going next. This was my second Burke book and I will be reading many more. Recommended to all. Keep them coming Mr Burke.
Story is good but becoming predictable.......2006-10-26
This is the third time that JLB has tackled the same type of story: a old murder, an old acquaintance, an old girlfriend and a boyhood friend (who is on the wrong side of the law).
The old murder involves the killing of a NAACP civil rights activist forty years ago by a KKK racist. The old acquaintance is an ex-vietnam marine (sound familiar) who became successful (came from the right side of the tracks) and is now running for Governor. The ex-girlfriend is now the politicians wife who has never forgiven Dave for dumping her. The old boyhood friend is a 'made-man' who has been playing both sides for a while and is now in trouble with everyone.
Needless to say the bad-guys get their cumuppence and the good guys win, but as always there is some collateral damage to someone near Dave. His old friend and bait shop buddy, Batist, gets stuck between a rock and a hard place, but thankfully survives.
Life, Death, and Politics to a Cajun Beat.......2006-07-09
Glenda, the Good Witch of Northern Oz, said "It's always best to start at the Beginning," but she was talking about the Yellow Brick Road. With James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux mystery and mayhem series, that ain't necessarily so, it's all Good, and the reader may start anywhere within this steamy, murkily atmospheric Southern Louisiana stories arc.
In this affair, Burke illustrates that "Some Saturday afternoon heroes will never go gently into that good night." Patrician Golden Boy and former LSU quarterback, descendent of KKK lynchmongers, Buford LaRose is running for Governor of the Great State of Louisiana. His ultra-libidinous wife, daughter of a gumball vendor to cheerleader, aspires to be First Lady. What have they to do with the 30 year old murder of a Civil Rights leader? and what about the Tim Leary flashback guru guy?
Burke as Robicheaux in the 1st person does his usual deft job of leading us through a mire of local characters, backwoods highways and bayous and, for tunes for the trip, there's that titular Cadillac Jukebox. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
Back where he belongs..........2005-09-28
I like James Lee Burke best when he confines his books to local themes, and he does just that in Cadillac Jukebox, the 9th in his Dave Robicheaux mystery series.
Robicheaux is still working for the New Iberia Sheriff's Department. Buford LaRose comes from a prominent New Iberia family and was a former college football hero. This golden boy is now running for governor. Over three decades prior, Aaron Crown (a former Klansman) was accused of murdering a civil rights leader, although it took 28 years to bring him to trial. LaRose wrote a book that helped bring about a conviction. Now, a filmmaker is filming a documentary in New Iberia to prove Crown's innocence. Robicheaux is asked to check out Crown's claims, and Robicheaux begins to think Crown was made a scapegoat. As Robicheaux investigates this case, he gets warned away by a number of strange and unattached individuals. As in most Southern Louisiana schemes, the mob is always close at hand. Also, there is a terribly frigtening hit man, Mookie Zerrang, who tortures just for fun. He's after Robicheaux, although he doesn't know who hired him.
The more Robicheaux digs, the more dead bodies turn up (mostly those involved with proving Crown's innocence). Unfortunately, with people like Buford LaRose, evil deeds are done in their names but they never dirty their own hands. Robicheaux is determined to not only find some dirt under LaRose's fingernails, but also, some skeletons in his closet. The plot is made even more interesting by the fact that LaRose's wife, Karyn, had a romance with Robicheaux back in his drinking days. Robicheaux unceremoniously dumped this homecoming queen and Karyn now has a hidden agenda that includes humiliation and revenge.
Robicheaux's new partner, Helen Hoileau, continues to be a good match, and friend Cletus Purcel is always a scream. A former cop, Purcel tells Robicheaux he is better able to work outside the law to help solve cases. That's definitely an understatement.
I have four more books in this series to read, and I'm going to be sorry to see it come to an end.
Great atmosphere fails to carry the day..........2005-02-12
This is part of a series of books written about an ex-New Orleans cop named Dave Robicheaux nd his trials and tribulations. This book continues some of the same themes that characterize the series as a whole, such as racism, race relations, the difficulties of being a cop while also being father and husband.
I love the setting and the details Burke puts in his books about New Orleans and the whole Bayou scene. He shows us the seemy side of New Orleans (which is not too hard to do - if you've ever been there you know what I mean. Not that every other city is problem-free, its just that New Orleans seemy side is very public - hey, its one of the attractions). Burke has a great ear for accents, and this makes parts of his books fun to read. However, his books can be depressing. No one rides off happily in the sunset..
This particular book concerns a white man jailed in the 1990s for the murder of an NAACP leader in the 1960s. He claims he did not do it, but the man running for governor made his reputation proving he did. Dave R. happens to know both men and gets dragged into the controversy against his better judgement...
Grade: C - great atmosphere, unnecessary plot twists.

Customer Reviews:
Short, sweet and concise. Excellent reference for the digital music world........2006-05-01
I like this book. It's well organized and easy to follow. It's broken up into 28 easy to understand chapters and is a great introductory book into the exciting world of iPod ownership and the portable digital music world. Everything from accessories to managing your music and even using your iPod as a hard drive. Wow! It's a great pocket guide and reference. Now if I could just find something like this that could help me out with my new Motorola Razor cell phone, the world would be a better place!
Outdated? - Perhaps.......2006-03-10
The previous reviewer dismissed this as outdated and suggested if you don't already own an iPod, to avoid the book. I bought the book after making the decision to buy but before I had actually made the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. I found the book highly informative both in the features and use of the iPod but also with the iTunes software. For me, it is indispensible. If you're planning on purchasing an iPod, or already have one and are trying to get maximum functionality out of both the iPod and iTunes, this is money very well spent.
already outdated.......2005-10-28
To some extent this book, which has just been published, is already outdated. Apple has just released the Nano and announced that it will soon discontinue its iconic iPod models in favour of the Nano. So if you do not have an iPod, I suggest you avoid this book.
Otherwise, it can quickly help you with better usage of your iPod. Perhaps to share music with your friends, which is one example discussed in the text.
The book also covers iTunes, which is run on a regular Mac. Many features that can be tweaked, like the Equalizer. And the book shows how to access the iTunes music store, which is one of the biggest sellers of online music.

Up close and personal interviews with the great bandleaders and singers of the Big Band Era
Customer Reviews:
an interesting interlude.......2002-01-30
I enjoyed this book and found some of the detail fascinating although at other times I felt it was skimming the surface and not going deep enough. There are slight errors eg Fletcher Henderson did not write King Porter Stomp he only arranged it and I was surprised to see Bubber Miley's picture included in a set of fifties Ellington men - he must have smelt pretty bad!
On the whole a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the big bands
More great stories of the Big Band Era.......2001-09-01
Like the Best Damn Trumpet Player, Grudens writes with feeling about all his heroes. Reading the interview with band leader Artie Shaw proves his respect for the musicians. Grudens is not a critic. He loves the music of his life and proves to all of us that the music of the era was the best music ever recorded. Where else have you ever read about people like Red Norvo, The Dorsey's the family of Duke Ellington, the great Stan Kenton, with help from Audree Kenton, Les Paul, the great Les Brown etc. You will love this book if you love that music. There is a feature about all the bands of Europe like Syd Lawrence and Ted Heath. The book is just great. There is even a section about the great songwriters, Ervin Drake ( I Believe and It Was a Very Good Year)and Jack Lawrence ( Linda, Tenderly) and others.
ANN JILLIAN'S INTRO. SAYS IT ALL!.......2000-08-21

Writing At Full Tilt Boogie.......2005-09-21
In his introduction, Rob. Storr describes Schjeldahl as fashion's 'watchful scribe'. It's a fine tribute and sets out what distinguishes Schjeldahl as a particular type of poet/ critic in the romantic tradition of Baudelaire and Whitman. So don't pick him up anticipating reams of jargon and esoteric art analysis, or structuralst theorizing. He speaks smart, 'for the fan in the stands'. I never knew Schjeldahl until he came to visit and travel to Uluru with me in 1986. It was a totally engaging 3 or 4 days and I became a fan of his enthusiasms as they then appeared, mostly in Art in America. I scrambled in our library for back issues to catch up on this infectious and radiating intelligence. At the time, he was very big on Kiefer, and in fact, suggested I fly south to Adelaide and catch the German show with its crop of current maestros, then current at the gellery of S. Australia, curated by the indefatigable, Ron Radford. Fortunately, most of his best writing til 1990 is packed between these covers, and his piece on Kiefer is among them. It's his gift and passion that even people I neither know much about, or do not care for, can be resurrected under Peter's gaze. I don't share his enthusiasms for Schnabel, Warhol, Nauman, Salle, Polke or Koons for instance. But Schjeldahl is generous with his praise and perspicacious with his more cautious notes, never dismissive or superior. This last quality is demonstrated in his defence of Rothko from the bullying Bobby Hughes. His caning of Wyeth's 'Helga' series pops the balloon on Helga hype and delivers uncharacteristically cool truths about his art being completed by reproduction and of Wyeth's place as'mass reassurer and avatar of the Art myth'. To read Schjeldahl is to be refreshed. He's still at it and enjoying writing for the New York Times. A recent review of Hillary Spurling's great volumes on Matisse will surely make it into his next collection.

This is a collection of reviews and essays written by the Oscar Wilde of art critics. Known for his witty and engaging column at the Village Voice, and his more recent post at the New Yorker, Schjeldahl has also contributed pieces to the New York Times, and most of the major art magazines. From the abstract expressionists to the simulationists, this book focuses mainly on the artists and movements of the last half of the 20th century.
I loved this book. It was informative, intelligently written, and highly entertaining. I found Schjeldahl to be a rare critic who is genuinely excited by the work he sees and admiring of the many artists he writes about. He may not always like the work, but he always gives it a fair and honest review. In turn, he opened up my mind to the possibilities of what art is and can be.

Pretty Good Information for Getting Into Digital Music.......2005-10-11
This is a pretty good reference book for anyone who is just getting into digital music.
It is particularly focused on the Windows Media player. There is also useful information regarding ripping and burning CDs, creating a computer jukebox, portable music players such as IPods, etc. The author also discusses the different formats for storing/playing digital music and the online services that offer downloadable songs for each.
Overall, I would say it is pretty good as far as being a beginning resource for one's digital music needs.
"From listening to the radio TO creating your own music".......2005-01-19
I've been searching for a book like this for quite a while. I was primarily looking for a book that explained how to use Windows Media Player. Other books would skim the surface but this one goes into detail for people who enjoy organizing and listening to their music in various ways. When the author finishes teaching you the in's and out's of Media Player, he's just warming up. The author then goes on to explain how to set up your computer for music to get the most out of it, how to record from analog sources into your computer, how to use portable digital players (such as I-Pod), ripping CD's and burning them, downloading and purchasing music, listening to the radio via your computer, and finally setting up your own computer-based, home recording studio and using it. whew!! I'm a professional musician and even I learned things from this book. Besides explaining the main topics of the book, Mr. Williams goes into detail well enough so that you don't feel like you are left hanging. Before this book came out you would have had to buy maybe three or four different books to cover the same information. It's well worth the price in my opinion. For someone who is wanting to get involved with any or all aspects of Digital Music and looking for a starting point, I highly recommend this book. Well done Mr. Williams.
When will Amazon.com have autographed copies available?.......2004-11-25
What a charming book. I picked it up in a bricks-n-mortar retailer who shall remain unnamed... then slammed it down before I let my fingerprints mar the surface and be forced to take out a loan to pay for it. I would recommend purchasing the book, chock full of informative, helpful, and timely advice-lets here and saving a pretty penny, though. It's not like I wanted to buy the store... just this excellent tome of digital wit that will help the user navigate the recesses of Al Gore's Internet (does he have that phrase copyrighted yet?) and remain out of prison and without "severe monetary penalties" (or, more succinctly, consequences and repercussions).
