Book Description
The Special Edition is the first two volumes of the Fretboard Logic guitar series combined with a special discount. Part One deals with the pattern organization of the fretboard which results from the guitar's unique tuning system. Part Two teaches the tone groups of music - Chords, Scales and Arpeggios - by building them in the context of this pattern organization, and thereby eliminating the usual guesswork and rote memorization associated with these areas of a guitarist's education. This alone can take years off the learning curve. Combined, the two parts form a solid foundation by which a guitarist can intelligently pursue the music styles of their own choosing, and play them on the guitar types which they prefer.

Let me save you some time and money, again . . ........2007-08-15
I originally wrote this review for Volume I, but it applies here too.
The reviews below all sound wonderful, even the ones that weren't five stars. Too good to be true I thought, so I only bought Volume I, rather than the box set. After a week of study, and occasionly rereading the same paragraph over and over until I got it, I too will say that this book did more for me in a week than all the decades of playing guitar and buying countless other books.
Still I was skeptical about the other volumes, so I decided that rather than buy the box set with the DVD I'd just buy the combination of Volumes I and II, and give Volume I to a friend. After spending some time with Volume II, I realized I needed the DVD. Amazon just emailed today saying the box set of three volumes plus the DVD has just shipped.
Let me save you some time and money - buy the box set with the DVD. I say that without having seen the DVD, but from what I see with Volumes I and II, I think you're going to want to do that. Like everyone else, I only wish that I had discovered this book when I was a kid.
Fretboard Logic SE: The ultimate guitar book !!!.......2007-07-10
Simply said this is a must... I played the guitar for 6 years and I was blind as regard as the fretboard... Not anymore :-))
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GUITAR!.......2007-07-07
First let me say this he takes some stabs a Mel Bay books but the thing is Mel Bay books teach you how to READ MUSIC. I wasted weeks reading this book and its cryptic if you ask me.You can learn the notes on the fretboard way faster if you know all your octaves IMHO. This book is a waste of good paper.
Very tough for a complete novice.......2007-05-13
As I v'e read in other reviews, this book goes from major open string chords straight to barre chords which at this stage in the game I am not capable of doing. I like the logic presented here and will come back to this book once I've developed more hand strength and basic skills.
A Real Eye Opener!.......2007-05-03
I have been teaching concepts from this book for 7 years now. I still consistently have lessons where the students go "Ahhh, I get it now." Everything you need to know about organizing and understanding the fretboard is in this book. The only drawback is, if you're not "ready" to understand it, then this book might be tough to get through.
If you:
1. are at a plateau and you have trouble telling someone what note you are on, or
2. you want to know how to connect all those scales together, or
3. you don't truely understand what I mean when I say "the CAGED system is one of the most powerful tools for any guitarist,"
Then, you need this book.
Book Description
The "First Stage" Guitar Book....is a must have beginners guitar book for those who really want to learn how to play the guitar which includes more than just 4 or 5 chords.
Look no further for simplicity and the easiest to play chord fingering diagrams of the most commonly played guitar chords whether it is rock n roll, blues, pop, country or any other style.
The "First Stage" Guitar Book....is Boldly Illustrated with a See and Do Approach....Only the Easy To Learn Guitar Information...Free of All That Wordy Fluff.
The "First Stage" Guitar Book.... takes you from tuning your guitar to naming each note on the guitar neck-fingerboard. It clearly illustrates the most commonly played guitar chords in the easiest and best sounding fingering shapes of each chord in both "Open"-notes typically played within the first four frets and "Barre"-fretted shapes. Also included are simple illustrated tips on how to enhance the sound of various chord shapes.
There is a Chord Combination Chart which will enable you to begin creating a surprising number of your own chord progressions without the guess work of which chord goes with which chord, allowing you to form the arrangement of any chord progression to suit your voice.
You will also learn how to read tablature (tabs) and Power Chords which are simply playing the sixth and fifth string or fifth and fourth string of any barre chord which are referred to as 5th Chords, it is that simple.
It is not necessary for the beginning guitar player to spend time reading hundreds of pages of learning how to play to get you on your way to learning how to play the guitar. You will find yourself playing your favorite songs and personal creations right away while saving hundreds of dollars on private lessons.
There is a section on traditional blues and rock n roll progressions which you will be able to transpose to any key to fit your voice.
Another great feature is that the binding allows this guitar book to remain flat for easy viewing of both the left and right side of each page.
Another great feature of this guitar book is you will be surprisingly shown how to change any Major Chord into a Minor Chord, Minor Seventh Chord or Major Dominant 7th Chord by just lifting a finger. It doesn't get any easier and it is so very simple.
You may want to come back at a later time to learn why the chords in the Chord Combination Chart are presented in a particular order but it is not necessary to know this to move forward and begin creating your own chord combinations (progressions).
This guitar book spends very little time in theory but focuses more of your time on getting you on to learning how to play the guitar the first day you receive it.
At the end of this guitar book are presented a few basic practice scale patterns with chord progressions so you can get a feel of what it is like to play lead guitar on a chord progression.
It does not get any easier for the beginning guitar player and those who all already play some. This guitar book continues to sell thousands upon thousands of copies world wide consistently because of it is boldly illustrated and simple diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
OK.......2007-01-09
This book is better suited for people who already know guitar basics. You shouldn't play chords if you're not comfortable playing notes
Good as a companion to another method.......2005-01-06
This is primarily a book on chord progressions. Starting with the most popular chords used in music, and then moving to other chords in open in barre position. Interspersed here and there are some tips on playing guitar. Not much more than that, and not very well organized.
I would consider this most beneficial as a companion to lessons or to a complete method found elsewhere. There just isn't much to it. It's 80 pages, but each page generally contains two 4-chord progressions. I also found that several of the chords listed are inaccurate -- or at least inconsistent with several other sources I checked them against.
I've used about 6 different books and software on learning the guitar, and I found this to be the least helpful. But there are some great reference diagrams that I still refer to, and as it is entirely focused on popular progressions, it finds a home being used in conjunction with another book.
Good Place to Start.......2003-12-02
I bought this book about three months ago and although it is a good place to get started, it does have a few mistakes. I'm now taking lessons and have learned that a few of the chord patterns in the book are inaccurate and/or wrong. For example, the book shows the correct finger pattern for an "A" major chord but does not omit the 6th string (open "E" note) from the chord diagram, thus leading you to believe the note should be played as part of the chord. My intructor corrected me the first time I played the chord. The mistake appears to be a simple publishing error but of course you can't know this if you are a beginner like myself. All things considered, the book was helpful in getting started and I was able to learn a few helpful chords before my lessons began. If you purchase this book, and are not familiar with how each chord is formulated, I would recommend veryfing the finger patterns against another source before you become too comfortable playing the chords.
40+ guitar beginner.......2003-04-07
This was the first book I used to get started from scratch. The reason I like it is that it has NO songs, so it took the pressure off having to learn a song, yet the 4 chord sequences sound quite good (according to my wife). It includes barre chords, but also alterative figuring to barre chords, so you can learn them slowly/progresively without pressure. The other book a bought (for songs) is "The Complete Guitarist" by Russ Shipton
A Great Book for Real Beginners.......2002-07-24
I have been playing the guitar for about a month. I have learned more from going through the chord progressions in this book than a [$$$] one I bought elsewhere. It certainly isn't all I need to know but it is a great start. I intend to go on to the next one in the series.
Book Description
The BEAD Method(TM) is a revolutionary new way to understand the logic behind the guitar fretboard. There are many methods that rely on patterns of the guitar but BEAD Guitar(TM) relies on the unique tuning pattern of the guitar neck itself. In contrast you are provided with a true roadmap of the entire guitar neck. This book provides a unifying theory for understanding fret-notes, scales, modes and chords. By using this method you will be enabled to quickly find any note, chord or scale from any position on the fretboard. This perfect bound edition is fully annotated and illustrated making this a great reference book for any guitarist's library.
Customer Reviews:
I recommend this for any guitar player, new or established.......2007-09-17
I have been reading through this book for a few months now, and i can say that my guitar playing has improved quite a bit. I've been playing for well over 10 years mostly self taught. I've tried to look at a few books but none really helped me learn the notes or chords as much as i wanted to. But after reviewing this i can now easily figure out my notes and placements on the fretboard. thanks for the great book man!
Great System But The Book...............2007-07-16
has quite a few mistakes and errors. It would have been nice if a list of corrections had come with it.
The Rosetta Stone For Guitar.......2007-02-20
This book completely changed the way I looked at playing guitar. I've been "playing at guitar" for most of my life. Most of everything that I got right occured purely by accident, or trial and error. The BEAD guitar method lays out the guitar fretboard in a simple and easy-to-understand way. Finally, I could understand the realtionship each string has to each other, and how the entire fretboard actually works in a logical manner. This is not an instant cure for someone who wants to play like Eric Clapton in 15 minutes. It does explain the relationship between strings and frets in a way that will have you constructing chords and lead patterns, with understanding, in a very short time. I wish I had studied this book when I was 16 years old. It provides more than just repeating patterns and shapes. The BEAD method maps the fretboard in simple, easy-to-understand lessons that build upon each other. It's written in a fun style as though the author were actually sitting down with you personally. For me, this book is the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone because it unlocks the "secrets" of the guitar fretboard. Even great guitarists who actually understand this stuff, usually can't explain it to someone else in a way that makes sense. That's the gift of Robert L. Dietz. He knows the information and, more importantly, is able to share it in a way that allows an average guy, like me, to finally understand how and why the guitar is set up the way it is. I recommend The BEAD method to anyone who wants a functional understanding of how to play guitar. I require it of every student (ages 10 to 67) that I teach, and have given it as a gift to other guitarists (especially those I play with). You cannot go wrong with this book. You will positively love it and, like me, you'll be saying, "Where has this book been all my life?" Look, you have invested thousands of dollars in guitars, cases, amps and effects. Why not spend a small amount on the one method that will allow you the understanding and ability to creatively play for the rest of your life? The BEAD method is not just for those who've been struggling for years. If you're thinking of buying someone their first guitar - DON'T, unless you also get them this book. They will thank you, and you (I promise) will be so glad you did.
playing classical guitar.......2007-01-19
for all of us wannabe classical guitar players this book is wonderful. it explains what you need to know in elementary terms and easily absorbable. you have to have a sponge like mind to play classical guitar and this book really motivates.
The Bead Method Has Merit.......2007-01-05
I purchased this book in hopes of finding a tool to teach the guitar fingerboard easily to my student. I found that it is easy to read and understand and will help anyone who wants a system to help learn all the notes on the neck, transposing keys, moving chord fingerings, etc. I would recommend this for the first time learner and for anyone who is reviewing what they've learned in the past. It is a good tool for successfully mastering the fingerboard.

Customer Reviews:
Good but typos will make you scream.......2007-09-17
Very well put together. Not enough info on guitar care. The pictures of the finger chord are ok, but you can not always tell exactly where the fingers are. A fret/string/dot chart would have been enough. An occational picture just to show the proper finger placement would be ok.
The biggest program is in the chord progression section there are typo's in the several of the chord charts. Very confusing. I'm glad I checked it out at my library. The book could have been so good if co-written with a several beginning enthusiasts to find out the missing connection.
Book Description
A complete guide diagramming over 1,000 guitar chords in their most common voicings. The book is arranged chromatically and each chord is illustrated in three ways for three levels of difficulty: the easiest form of the chords for the beginner and the more difficult versions for the intermediate and advanced players. Note names of each string are indicated on each chord diagram to let the player know what notes are being played in the chord.
Customer Reviews:
Great for intermediate guitarists.......2000-07-19
This was a great book for a guitarist of an intermediate skill level, it does not explain much, just shows chord diagrams.
Book Description
Welcome to The "Next Stage" Guitar Book! This guitar book contains a simple learning method that will help you master the skill of playing basic musical scales quickly and easily without having to learn anything about music theory if you don't want too. Most of the scales presented are Major Scales, the familiar Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do that most of us have heard since childhood. The last half of the book will introduce you to the Pentatonic Scales (Major & Minor) and everyone's favorite - "The Blues Scale". The mateial presented is designed so you will not be overwhelmed with more scales and information than you need to know at this early stage of your musical development.
The material will be presented in three parts; Part I will cover single octave Major Scales. Part II will expand on Part I to cover double octave Major Scales. Part III will introduce you to the Pentatonic and Blues Scale. Each new scale is presented along with an accompanying (1) "Scale Path" diagram, (2) "Standard Music Notation" and (3) "Tablature" for that particular scale. If you like, you may record the scales you are learning and play them back periodically to monitor your progress. You will discover that by playing and memorizing these scales, you are preparing yourself for more advance scales and musical concepts.
Knowledge is power, and once you unlock the "secret" to playing scales, you can create your own phrasings and melodic patterns. You will find much more than described above in this new guitar book! On another note, you might also want to get a copy of The "First Stage" Guitar Book - Learn How To Play Guitar Easily & Quickly!, you will find this book very helpful in learning guitar chords in clear, bold and easy to understand illustrations plus more. Also there is a handy quick reference chord chart that you might want to include in your "how to play guitar" reference case called The "First Stage" Guitar Chord Chart - Learn How To Play The Most Commonly Played Guitar Chords!
Customer Reviews:
The "1" Guitar Book.......2003-02-14
I find this book The "Next Stage" Guitar Book easy to read and understand. Most of all the patterns in this book are moveable and has made my lead guitar playing more exciting. Also we have found out that these patterns can also be used on the bass guitar as well.
Picks up where the "First Stage" book left off.......2000-12-28
This book continues to present the need to know, nuts and bolts information that's necessary to play the guitar. This second book builds on the first by introducing the reader to scales and how to play the scales from many different positions on the fretboard. There's enough info in this book to keep a person busy for a long, long time, but again it's given in an easy to comprehend format that seeks not to confuse, but to provide a practical, down to earth guide to making some music with your guitar. Don't miss out on this unique book.
The Best Guitar Tutorial I've Seen.......2000-02-24
The best guitar tutorial I've seen-excellent chord charts are easy to use, with logical progression that make it easy to locate desired chord. Simple and straight forward.
A Fantastic Way To Learning How To Play Scale Patterns.......1999-11-10
It's hard to believe that learning scale patterns could be made so easy. The "Next Stage" Guitar Book is great. It also includes easy to understand tabs and standard notation. What a great deal and savings on private lessons. A Must Get!
The "Next Stage" Guitar Book is consice, complete and easy........1999-10-27
The "Next Stage" guitar book by Chris Lopez is a work that is long overdue. The book approaches Major and Pentatonic scales from several angles to make learning easy and understandable. Every new student (and some old) to the guitar should have this book in their arsenal of information. The text at the beginning of the book is highly informative. I have used this book with my students in conjunction with our Kradl picks, and we have seen stunning progress, both in terms of technique and a general understanding of music theory. The "Next Stage" guitar books is consice, complete and "user friendly."

Customer Reviews:
This book is weak.......2006-03-24
This is a very weak book. It contains nothing but disjoint, pointless tidbits of info. There is little logical flow. Because of this it isn't suitable for beginners. Because of its basic nature, it isn't suited for non-beginners.
If you're a beginner looking to learn to play, look elsewhere. If your an advanced beginner and you want something to doink with, this may be ok for you.
"Blues You Can Use" is a *far* better guide for the advanced beginner who wants to be able to play something.
Great book for someone looking for a tour of..........2005-08-21
If you're just getting into guitar and want an insightful tour of the instrument's popular sounds and styles, this is the book to get. Author Schonbrun introduces the reader to the concept of phrasing and inflection with hands-on exercises and demonstrations. He prepares the beginner for many of the common chord progressions the fledgling player will encounter in popular music. The author also presents enough information about gear to enable the reader to feel confident while acquiring everything they need to develop their sound.
For the advancing players he introduces the idea of alternate tunings and harmonics, ear training, and transcription along with exercises and demonstrations.
Actually, this book is terrible.......2005-08-21
I just picked up the guitar again -- I played guitar briefly, and very badly, years ago -- and was hoping for a quick refresher course and a little more. This book, alas, is just terrible. The organization is illogical and confusing, important topics are given very short shrift while unimportant stuff fills page after page. Most of the book could charitably be called filler. The book is terrible as a reference book as well; useful stuff like scales and chord diagrams are scattered about the book, and many of the diagrams are hard to make sense of. (He doesn't even explain the correct tuning for the guitar until page 170, in a section on how to play slide guitar -- I had to look it up on the internet.) I chucked the CD into the trash. For scales, I found "The Ultimate Scale Book" to be about a zillion times better.
Great Instructional Book.......2005-08-08
This is a great book for the beginning guitar player.
I really liked the logical progression of instruction and the very clear notes and the accompanying CD is a great help.
If you want to learn basic theory, scales, chords and technique then this is the book for you.
Follow the lessons and before you know it you'll be creating great blues and rock solos!
Helped me to create awsome solos.......2005-04-11
This book is EVERYTHING. I could only play licks and chords from internet tab. I couldn't create my own songs neither did I understand theory. This book starts from the basics (how to read tabs), through chords, and where they come from, to pentatonics, to major and minor, to modes, techniques... all you need to know!
I even asked a few questions via e-mail, and he replied gladly. I can after reading, studying the book, and doing the regular excercises as explained in the book, create my own solos and songs. It even helped my playing-by-ear technique. I recommend this book to one and all, from beginners to advanced!
Product Description
There are many ways to play and categorize chords and many schemes for cataloguing them. This book focuses on understanding the ways that chords are made, enabling the student to figure out how to play a new chord in several different positions. This is not a technique book, but rather a step-by-step method of understanding guitar chord symbols and the musical sounds they represent. The author's goal in writing this book was to empower the reader with the ability to play from sheet music, jazz charts, or lead sheets, all of which is accomplished through chord and fretboard diagrams, standard notation and tablature, and plain English. This book is recommended for seasoned players who want to enrich their harmonic palettes as well as for beginners who need help in conquering the initially abstract quality of the guitar fretboard.
Customer Reviews:
learn chords without memorization.......2000-06-04
This book is great for the self taught student. Simply put, it teaches you how to figure out how to play a chord based on what you know about the basic A, E, D, and C shapes taught in beginning guitar. I found this a heck of a lot more useful than a book of chords because I can look at a chord name like Cm7b5 and figure out in my head how to play that chord in a few moments without having to memorize the exact shape. The book also has some basic exercises to help "muscle memory" so that you become familiar with the more common chords. The book is well written (the author has a nice "voice" so the reading isn't dry) and the lessons aren't too long. Also, the author uses standard music notation, tabulature, and fretboard pictures throughout the book so you would have to be a real moron to not be able to see what's going on. However, this book is not for absolute beginners. You must be familiar with the chord shapes A,D,E,and C and how notes are related to the frets(for example: C is a half step higher than B, etc.). Knowledge of a scale (diatonic?) is helpful but not required.
Unless you have a degree in theory, buy this book........1999-04-23
Bob is a great teacher, a phenomenal player and an all-around great guy. If you don't have the pleasure of knowing him or studying with him, you will get a good idea of his approach to fretboard education from this book. Even a complete novice could come to understand how to phrase any chord in western music several different ways from reading this book. Bob makes it easy and unintimidating. From this book, you will be able to extrapolate a lot of the data in those two-inch thick chord encyclopedias!
Book Description
All you need to know about the art of improvisation. Teaches the guitar player how to improvise and play lead lines over chord progressions. Also explains how to create and use intervals, scales, modes and arpeggios in any key. With helpful accompaniment cd containg back up and play along tracks.

Skip this book and go for PlaneTalk.......2006-01-18
Skip this book and go for PlaneTalk (www.thatllteachyou.com)
and you'll be glad you did. Look at PlaneTalk and see why "thinking scales" while improvising will only get in your way and hold you back. For those out there who think I'm joking or what have you, let's just say I went to PlaneTalk and will never go back to scales. I picked up this book a few months back and looked at it again and thought "These guys are making things a billion times more complicated than it needed to be and it will only frustrate people wanting to learn how to improvise". Again, go to the PlaneTalk site by Kirk Lorange. This is no gimmick. Just read the testimonials. Best guitar investment I ever made. Forget about these scale books as they're useless unless you want to be a profession "jazz" musician where a knowledge of modes is required in order to talk to the other musicians. If you want to know how to solo over country, rock, folk, PlaneTalk is the way to go. NOT this book or any other scale book.
If you think I'm nuts, that's your choice :-) I'm glad I went to PlaneTalk. You can have my copy of this book if you want to pay for shipping.
Excellent Book...But.......2002-07-11
I have been playing guitar for almost 2 years...after hearing Tim Reynolds play with Dave Matthews I decided I wanted to be able to do what Tim does...so I sought out to learn to improv and get a basis on some theory. So I was recommended this book by my local music store. I found the book really helpful...some of the excercises dont really go with the lesson so I just got my scale dictionary and did my own lessons but used the book as a background for theory. Pieces of the long puzzle started fitting in but this book fails to bring in enough of what it says to do...basically it doesnt go deep enough just skims the surface.
Good choice.......2001-10-25
This book gives you what you expect, the knowledge to run
riffs and play in key, as well as understand how to create
your own lead runs based on a particular scale. the layout is easy to absorb it is not busy, a problem a lot of tutorials have.
A good tool for the beginning guitarist........2000-06-09
A good tool for the beginning guitarist, however fails to go into more complex scale formations. Also, it includes very little music theory as to why the scales are formed how they are. If your just starting out, and can't read music, this is a great book for you.
savidge, vradenburg book.......2000-03-25
I don't like the book or the CD, the playing is too programmed and the choice of scales is very limited.
