Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Peter Spier's book Gobble, Grunt, Growl was my favorite as a child and as a young artist. The only words in the book were animal sounds, but the pictures really told the story. Mr. Spier is an amazing draftsman and while his creatures remained realistic, they all displayed such emotion and fun. He really knows how to set a scene of characters interacting without the use of a single word. All of his books share the same love of natural science, detail and whimsy. They inspired my drawings as a child and continue to now as a professional artist. I wish I could be half as good as him!

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The book: It would have to be a book with a lot of pictures and a lot of words! DK's Animal: The Definitive Visual Guide of The World's Wildlife could keep me occupied for a long time. The CD: That's tough, because I am constantly buying new music. I have current favorites like The Killers and Delerium, but being a long time Madonna fan, I would have to say her first self-titled album was her best. Its fun and fresh. The DVD: I would probably take one of the discs from The Simpsons: Complete Season 6. Its my favorite show on TV, and that was a brilliant season. I could watch over and over again!.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: Most of my lies are awful since I am such a terrible liar. My worst was back in 1st grade when my family lived in San Diego. My parents took me to the zoo every other weekend and I was a complete animal nut. So one day, I told my friend Rommel that I had a zoo in my backyard, complete with elephants, giraffes, and other wild beasts. He actually believed me! The silliest part of this lie was that I actually brought him over to see my "zoo," which did not exist. Rommell seemed unfazed when he caught my lie; children are pretty forgiving. I was one dumb kid!

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: To make pop-ups, I need lots of light, inspiration and thumping music! The studio where I make pop-ups is a simple office with large windows and filled with pop-up books in an old building in New York City. Thanks to satellite radio, we listen to all kinds of music (though I am partial to dance music). Being a child of the 80's, I also force my designers to listen to the 80's station almost everyday. We have a very casual, fun environment but are serious about the work we do. When I write, however, I need to be alone. I play quiet, soothing music in a small office at home. The office doubles as a toy room for my massive Transformers and Star Wars figure collections. When I have writer's block, I have plenty of toys to distract me!

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: "Thanks for the fun and don't touch my toys!"

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: My grandpa George, since he died before I was born and everybody in the family loved him so much. He really wanted a grandson but missed me by a few years. I'd like to get to meet him just once.

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: I would like to be able to morph into any form I choose like Mystique from X-Men or Beast Boy from the Teen Titans. Kind of like a Transformer robot that can turn into anything!

I purchased this to give to my 4 year old granddaughter for Christmas. She loves Cinderella. The book is absolutely wonderful and is full of wonderful popups on each page. Even some of the corners open up. My daughter and I were amazed at it. The only problem with it, was a small hole on the front of the fold on the book. It's not huge, so I'm not going to return it. I'm sure we will have so much fun reading the book with her.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A KID (OR A GIRL) TO LOVE "CINDERELLA".......2007-05-28

Being a huge "CINDERELLA" fan, my niece bought this for ME for Christmas two years ago. Smart girl! (I'm an adult male in my early '40's). Needless to say, this stunning enchanted pop-up book was, hands down, my favorite gift that Christmas. It has earned a proud, distinquished place in my "CINDERELLA" collection of books and DVDS. We take this book out on special occassions, put it on a large table, and are still in awe of its beauty, wonder, and magic.

I got this as a gift for a 5 year old girl that I have babysat for that loves princesses. Not only does she love this absolutely beautiful book, her mother loves it too. I may even buy one for my adult self! The pop-up carriage is truly unbelievably engineered and gorgeous. I highly recommend it!

I am a [...]teacher in a school where many of the students are ESL learners. I came across this book when I was looking for a way to help my students develop their reading fluency. Let me just say, my class has LOVED acting out these plays! I only wish I had discovered it earlier in the year so that I could have more time to work with this book. I would highly recommend it.

The scripts were fun to do for a drama class of 9- 12 year olds.Some were a little preachy about the point of the story, but the the kids laughed a lot.

Fun remakes of classic tales.......2005-08-24

I actually got this book for my kids so that we could read them together at night. It turned out that this book is actually written for use in a classroom. (I didn't realize that it was by Scholastic when I bought it.) Fortunately I am just 2 classes away from being a teacher, so I can get some use out of it. This book would probably not be too useful for families--unless you are the Von Trapps and all the cousins are visiting.

Teachers are always looking for practical and intriguing ways to teach writing and build students'motivation to write, so the creative ideas for addressing national language arts standards and teaching writing for a variety of purposes found in this book are treasures.
Students and adults appreciate the zany fairy tales J.M. Wolf includes in this book, and the many practical resource ideas for presenting fairy tale plays really do work. The fractured fairy tales hook students' interest, and the related writing activities and resources are useful supplements to the language arts curriculum.

The best Cinderella story.......2007-08-25

I read this book back when I was in middle school & I remember thinking to myself - "He loved her for how beautiful she was as a person". How many books do that for kids?? Even as an adult now, I love the memory of this book. I'm buying simply to enjoy it all over again & pass it on to my future children to read ( even boys can get a good lesson from it!).

I thought the book was very interesting. It was a good book and it was a fun kid's book. When I read it the book reminded me of Cinderella, but I didn't know it was an Indian version. I think many girls who like nature will like this book.

One of the Best Children's Books Ever Made.......2006-08-24

On one level, it's a Cinderella story in a different setting. But it's more than that. On a little deeper level, it's a story about true beauty being inside, but it's more than that. The book seems to have so many layers of meaning depending on how you look at it, all in what seems at first like a simple picture book. Confidence, ties to the Earth, insight into others, and more. I've read this book to my sons and daughters more than any other, and never tire of it. I hope they don't either, and more, I hope they come to understand the richness of the kind of lives lived by the rough face girl, and her sister-in-law to be, and husband to be.

This is a story about a girl who is not beautiful on her outside, but is beautiful on her inside. The story takes place on the shores of Lake Ontario. She and her hard-hearted sisters are three of many women who want to marry an invisible being. But only someone who can see him, can marry him. The lesson is on the importance of having a good heart more than beautiful clothes or looks. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Native American culture and people who need to learn the importance of having a good heart.

The Magnificiant Story of an Indian Girl!.......2006-05-24

The Rough Face Girl is a beutiful book. It had alot of description and many morals hidden in the words of the book. The young girl was despised by everyone in her village but she always stayed true to herself and others and she ended up with the best person that every girl wanted to marry. I learned that true beauty comes from inside and if you are honest then good things will happen to you. I also learned to be yourself because sooner or later people will start to accept who you are. And I learned to remember that there is always room for improvment. So in conclusion, I feel that this story can be enjoyed by young and old people!

I am a huge Cinderella fan, and so this book seemed a perfect fit. But the first part of the book was slow reading, and it could have lost slower less dedicated readers. In the end it was worthwhile as a retelling of the classic fairytale, I just doubt that this will become a classic on its own.

i am currently almost finished with this book and love every page! this is kind of a new twist on "Cinderella". the stepmother and stepsisters, upon realizing who she really is, welcome her with open arms. Cendrillon (main chacter) is as gorgous as her mother was. her mother died in childbirth and her father cannot bear to look at her, let alone name her. her real name is Constaze, after her mother, but she was named Cindrillon "child of cinders" by Mathilde, the woman who delievered her.

this book was awsome and i couldn't put it down, which is pretty much the way with all of cameron dokey's other books, although i have to go back and re-read some due to the fact that i could not even get 1/3 of the way through them due to school and work. i am looking forward to her next release.

Dokey's Best in the Once Upon a Time Series.......2007-04-17

I definitely enjoyed reading this book. The descriptions are very elegant, and the entire feeling is moody. The way the author choose to retell Cinderella I have never seen done before, and it was an interesting take. The characters are likable and believable, and you even come to like the evil stepsister. On the down side, the heroin's relationship with the prince is unrealistic and shallow, but I will say that is somewhat typical of this series. In my opinion Snow by Tracy Lynn was better.

Cinderella as we have never seen her before.......2007-03-26

This tale has always been one of my favorite fairy tales and I have loved some of the different renditions of it like "Ever After" and "Diary of an Ugly Stepsister". "Before Midnight" is another great addition to the retellings of Cinderella. In this revision, Constanze de Brabant, or Cendrillion has been abandoned by her father Etienne because of the death of her mother. She is raised in obscurity with a mysterious boy Raoul by Old Mathilde until a noblewoman, Chantal de Saint-Andre, with her two daughters Amelie and Anastasia arrive. Chantal has married Etienne and she is now Cendrillion's stepmother, but Chantal is never told until secrets are discovered. I love the scene where they open Cendrillion's mother's room and see her portrait. Here Chantal exclaims it is so wicked of Etienne to throw away the most precious gift of all, Love. It is also in this scene that Cendrillion gets her wish of having a family at last.
I will not add too many spoilers and explain who Raoul really is and what happens at the "ball" but this tale which emphasizes the importance of embracing love and all the other feelings that come with it; is so lovingly rendered that both young and old romantics will love it.

A better than average retelling of a classic........2007-03-26

Tonight, I returned to the lighter world of the traditional fairy tale for something to read with Cameron Dokey's Before Midnight. Part of an ongoing series of rewritten stories for young adults called Once Upon a Time, this one goes back to one of the more well-known stories about a maiden and a shoe fetish, so to speak.

A girl is born on a day of storms in the seaside castle, with the same reddish hair and green eyes of her mother, and strange and magical signs surround her birth. But in being born, the child takes her mother's life, and her father, Etienne, does not learn of her birth until he arrives with a newborn boy in his arms two weeks later. In despair over his wife's death, he curses his daughter, saying only that he never wants to see or know of her ever again. As to the baby boy, he says only that he is to never leave the lands of the castle. She is Cendrillon, the child of the cinders, and he Raoul, who grows up to be a stableboy.

Told in first person by Cendrillon, we find out that she has a talent for gardening and making wishes. For her, the wishes made on her birthday tend to come true, no matter how prosperous or dire the consequences. Raised by Old Mathilde, who attended her birth, and asked to be her godmother, she is a wise girl, content to be in and of her home, but also wishing for the love from her distant father, who never asks after her. Ever.

One year, a stranger arrives at the door, Niccolo, who has washed up on the beach below the castle. He becomes part of the household, sharing tasks with Raoul, who has become the best friend for Cendrillon. Another wish brings the biggest change however, when word comes that her father has married a widow with two daughters, and they are coming to live with Cendrillon and the rest -- evidently Etienne has little use for women in his life.

The stepmother, Chantal, and her daughters, Amelie and Anastasia, are the big change in the story. I was rather pleasantly surprised by them both, and the bold step that Dokey takes with the traditional roles. I don't want to reveal any more of the plot here, because half of the enjoyment of reading it was to find the new twists that the author took with this.

Cendrillon is not a doormat either; she boldly speaks up for herself, and is not the drudge-of-all-work, abused and forgotten. Here she is a strong young woman, with a couple of character flaws, that unfortunately the rest of the novel lacks. There are other traditional elements here, from the prince choosing his bride from all of the nobly born maidens of the kingdom, pumpkins, but it is also rather down-to-earth as well. It also has humour to it as well, which helps to lighten the story considerably.

My greatest disappointment with it was the setting of a sort of medieval-renaissance world with all of the traditional trappings. While I suppose that it was necessary, it would have been nice to see a bit of change here.

Dokey in the author's afterword speaks about the origins of the story, from the Brothers Grimm to the older Charles Perrault that gives the true name of Cinderella. The novel isn't very long, just under two hundred pages, so there isn't much room for much development for the characters, but the writing and plotting is fairly tight, and the author doesn't forget to put in some descriptive passages that create some lovely imagry.

More than suitable for most teenaged readers, and adults who don't mind an excursion back to the lands of wonder. Recommended.

Once upon a time, before Ariel, Jasmine, and Belle, three Princesses ruled Supreme in the Disney Kingdom:
Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora/Briar Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty). This original, classic Princess Trio is celebrated in a delightful and entertaining Books and CD Box set.

The packaging may be pink (meaning the item is pidgeonholed as a product for "young girls") and the story presentation is brief (again pidgeonholing: as an item for "young readers") but this is actually a treat for fans of "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- fans of all ages. I don't have little girls/children. I purchased this simply because I love "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- and the price is extremely affordable.

I found the box the books and CD came in to be the perfect way to store and care for the books. The box easily fits on to a shelf of my entertainment center; so it should also fit easily on to any bookshelf. The books are 24 page paperbacks, but quite sturdy and nicely illustrated; although the cover illustration for the "SNOW WHITE" book makes Snow White and her Prince look like dorks!!

The three stories are all on one CD. The CD almost fell out of the box when I opened it. I put the CD in a jewel case, and downloaded it into my computer as well to make for easier use.

The stories are brief, (not quite the same as the larger and longer cherished Book and LP Record Series from my own childhood; but I'm still completely enchanted) so certain elements of the Disney plots (the mice making a dress for Cinderella, The Seven Dwarfs Dance Party with Snow White, and the good fairies making a birthday cake for Aurora and cleaning the cottage with magic wands) are eliminated. Still, I was amazed at how well the spirit and the essence of these Disney films is captured on a brief 36 minute CD. True fans will notice happily familiar musical underscoring over the narration of "CINDERELLA" and "SLEEPING BEAUTY." No songs from "SNOW WHITE" are included, but this story features a particularly vigorous alternate musical
underscoring, and is the best of the CD adaptations. However, "SLEEPING BEAUTY" is my favorite Disney fairy tale.

The narration is quite lively and the voice actors for the characters are superb; particularly for "SNOW WHITE." The voice actors are not the same as those in the actual films, but sound so similar that they will certainly evoke plesant memories.

Ilene Woods is heard singing "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" from the film Soundtrack of "CINDERELLA", and beautiful soprano Mary Costa sings "Once Upon A Dream" and "I Wonder" from the "SLEEPING BEAUTY" Soundtrack.

Good collection, lousy packaging.......2007-05-22

We purchased this read-along set for our three-year-old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. These are probably her favorite stories that we've purchased for her so far.

The collection itself is quite nice - Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in three separate books and one CD. Currently, only Cinderella is available for individual purchase. The box it came in was a piece of cardboard junk that was oversized and took up more space than it should have. We tossed it and are keeping the books in the same pile as the rest of her read-alongs and the CD in a jewel case of its own.

While it is nice to cut down on the number of discs to keep track of, the 3-in-1 set up is a little hard, because unless I program my daughter's CD player to just play one story, it will play all three, one right after another. Usually, this isn't a big deal - it gives me about 36 minutes of uninterrupted peace - but if we even suggest that she only listen to one of the three, she has an absolute fit. To her, the three stories HAVE to be listened to consecutively.

So, we like the collection, the packaging was pathetic, and the single-disc can create a few problems, but overall it was a very good buy. I would like to see the individual stories offered separately, though, so we could have some choices in what we decide to purchase.

What message does the Cinderella story convey to young girls? If you are concerned about the emphasis on beauty and passivity, try Cinderella stories from various cultures. After hearing this Egyptian Cinderella story from a library book, my granddaughter asked to have a copy for her own.

Rhodopis of Antiquity.......2007-06-29

This book is not "racist". The fairy tale is based upon the tale of "Rhodopis", Greek word for 'rosy cheek or sunburned', in antiquity. "Rhodopis" stories were popular Greek tales among ancient Greeks since the 6th century BC, told in different versions. A well told account in one of these older versions had her finance a pyramid in her honor, the Pyramid of Mycerinus or Menkera. Shirley Climo's version is based upon these versions of "Rhodopis", Strabo's "Rhodopis" is an archetypal Cinderella from the 1st century BC. He immortalized a woman by the same name in what historians consider the first "Cinderella" basing his story on both facts and fictions. The woman who's story is somewhat based upon was believed to be the beautiful Rhodopis born in Northern Greece, kidnapped by pirates, sold to a man on the island of Samos, a fellow slave, a homely little man called Aesop, used to tell her stories of animals. When she was grown the man in Samos sold the girl in Naucratis, bought by Charaxos in Egypt who spoiled her as if she was his own daughter giving presents of jewels and beautiful clothes, she later married a Pharaoh. She is of whom some Greeks believed the Pyramid of Mycerinus or Menkera were build by, while others dispute this. One thing can not be disputed is that by Strabo times and many centuries afterwards, "Rhodopis" was renowned through out ancient Greece and Rome for her beauty, promoting various different versions of "Rhodopis" stories. The wind according to Strabo takes away one of her rose red slippers, an eagle according to Aelian's version. It is a historical fact that a Greek maiden did marry Pharaoh Amasis (Dynasty XXVI, 570-536 BC), Amasis was actually the king's Greek name. His birth name was Ahmose II, who was of common origins. She was the princess Ladice, daughter of King Battus II from the Greek colony Cyrene. As to the comment regarding the inhabitants of ancient Egypt would have been of " African, Mediterranean, Semitic, or Arabic descent and dark-hued", true in most cases but not always true when it comes to Greeks, Romans or other Mediterranean people; yes some are of "dark hue" but some are also very fair and Greeks definitely are not "African, Semitic, or Arabic" in descent, especially Cleopatra and the Ptolemies, given their habit of inter marrying with one another. Plus many ancient writers make a point to describe Rhodopis as having fairer coloring and "different looking" from native Egyptians because Greeks, of whom Cleopatra and the Ptolemies descent from, were different looking and fairer in coloring from native Egyptians. The story has a Greek as the "heroine" because the audience of whom Strabo and most of these ancient authors were speaking to, including the Hellenistic Pharaohs of the Ptolemy Dynasty, were of Greek origins.

Unexpectedly Educational.......2006-08-05

I had to read a version of the Egyptian story when I was in the 6th grade,I don't think it was this exact take on the tale, however I remember enjoying it very much--it opened me up to people across the world sharing the same story in different ways. Climo seems to have really zeroed in on that idea, with all of her various retellings of the Cinderella tale from all over the world.

As usual, her writing is great, it completely creates the characters and I really enjoyed reading the story. The illustrations are a little better that I thought them to be, upon thought. I feel the faces were not as nice as they could have been, nor the colors quite right. But I was amused by all of the characters always being drawn in profile as if they were Egyptian hieroglyphs.

In this story Cinderella is a slave girl who likes to dance, and who's master buys her special dancing shoes (this and her greek heritage) sets her apart from the local egyptian women.

I really was intrigued by the explaination that Climo gives at the end about this Cinderella and how she was actually a real person, it made me want to read up on her (Cinderella that is).

Author, Robert D. San Souci uses a touch of sarcasm in his voice as he retells this Caribbean version of Cinderella. The sarcasm adds an element of humor and makes this rendition more appealing to young readers. Teachers and readers can use an index in the back of the book to explain the Creole words in the story. The large number of Creole words helps to authenticate this story. There are many similarities between the Caribbean version of Cinderella and Disney's. The nanny uses a magical wand to change a breadfruit into a gilded coach. The breadfruit resembles a small pumpkin except for the fact that the breadfruit grows on a tree instead of a vine. The only main differences between this retelling of Cinderella is that there is only one stepsister,the glass slipper is a pink embroidered slipper, and the godmother is a wacky nanny with a sense of humor. Ravishing colors, strokes of Caribbean, the illustrator is at his best here. And the story, told by Cinderella's godmother, has a totally different ring to the usual, passive, goody-goody Cinderella.
The ending changes the whole outlook on this classic fairytale.
If you're tired of telling the same Cinderella story over and over again to your princess-toddler and you're longing for more... color, go for it.

cendrillon by Robert D. San Souci is a good book. I expecially like Vitaline's character. She is so evil.
Cendrillon's mom dies at the beginning. She gets a step-mom and sister (Vitaline). They make her and her godmother do all the work. The step-mom doesn't let Cendrillon go to the prince's ball. her godmother helps her go to the ball. the prince and her danced atill 12:00.then when she was running out the door she lost her sliper. the prince went to every girl in town and he will marry the girl who fits into the sliper. he got married to cendrillon.
I liked the story because it has some french words, and it isn't like the oringinal version.

This book is O.K but it copys a diffrent story but I still like it a little. This book is about a washer women who has a godmother who turns the washer women into a prinsess.
I like this story because it is kind of a magic story. the author describes what it would be like to be a poor washer woman and the author adds details to it well. Just read the book!!

Jouanah is a Hmong folktale which encompasses many of the elements of the oft told Cinderella, however, it also has unique variations which reflect the Hmong culture. In this tale, Jouanah's mother plays a crucial role as well as the evil stepmother and her daughter. It leaves the reader with the warm feeling of good triumphing over evil. The illustrations capture the style of the Blue Hmong Clan and the terrain of Southeast Asia in a dreamlike way.

This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico. A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds. Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story. I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering. Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love." Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child. Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.

The young woman Cinduri is overburdened with work from her stepmother and stepsister, and receives barely enough to eat in return. But Godfather Snake learns of her troubles and helps her attend the village's annual Navaratri Festival dressed in the most beautiful golden-threaded sari and diamond anklets, and there she wins the heart of the Prince. A captivating picture book story commendably written by Lila Mehta, deftly adapted by Meredith Brucker, and wondrously illustrated in full color by Youshan Tang, Anklet For A Princess would make a welcome and popular addition to any school or community library picture book collection.
