Book Description

Kids love fast food. And the fast food industry definitely loves kids. It couldn't survive without them. Did you know that the biggest toy company in the world is McDonald's? It's true. In fact, one out of every three toys given to a child in the United States each year is from a fast food restaurant. Not only has fast food reached into the toy industry, it's moving into our schools. One out of every five public schools in the United States now serves brand name fast food. But do kids know what they're eating? Where do fast food hamburgers come from? And what makes those fries taste so good? When Eric Schlosser's best-selling book, Fast Food Nation, was published for adults in 2001, many called for his groundbreaking insight to be shared with young people. Now Schlosser, along with co-writer Charles Wilson, has investigated the subject further, uncovering new facts children need to know. In Chew On This, they share with kids the fascinating and sometimes frightening truth about what lurks between those sesame seed buns, what a chicken "nugget" really is, and how the fast food industry has been feeding off children for generations. Featuring cover art by M. Wartella.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids..........2007-09-30

I picked up this book because I wanted to get Schlosser's information without wading through his voluminous Fast Food Nation. While targeted at a younger audience, Chew on This has enough information to be an informative read for adults.

Conspiracy theorists will want to gloss over the section about the virtues of labor unions, the use of satellite imagery to locate future restaurants, and the multimillion dollar ad campaigns that target children. Schlosser does have an axe to grind. But as he points out: eating habits have changed more in the last 30 years than they have in the last 30,000 years. The chicken nugget has only existed since 1983.

I must be jaded because I didn't find the information that shocking. Fast food is, well...fast food!; a snack on the run, not dinner with the kids. And yes they are run by billion-dollar coroporations; not mom and pop businesses.

Why do the fries taste so good? They contain beef fat. What happens when you drink 25 colas a week? Your teeth fall out. What happens when fast food is served in public high schools? 40% of the student body is classifed as overweight. What happens to an obese, inactive, 16-year old teenager who eats 2 Big Macs for lunch everyday? He suffers a heart attack.

A recommended entertaining, quick read.

3 out of 5 stars Chew on this worth reading....if.......2007-09-11

Chew on this is worth reading if only to learn a bit about the fast food industry. I skipped the chapter on beef, as I don't eat beef anyhow. The book didn't make me give up going out all together, but it did make me selective. I no longer go to the big chains. As with any book of this type, there are counter accounts to what it has to say. Believe what you want. I believe the book a bit more than the corporations.

4 out of 5 stars Chew on This, A Review.......2007-09-09

When summer comes I like to pluck a few books off my shelf and read them. One of them with a review. Some parts have been excluded for some other reasons:

My choice; Chew on This, the Eric Schlosser book that talks about fast food. Reading it made me thank my mother (as preposterous as it seems) for never taking me to one of those places. The facts made my stomach forget it was hungry and my gag reflex to kick in. Horrific statements such as what makes the drinks pink (did I mention I hate bugs?) and the ingredients in the milk shakes that I could barely comprehend, much less pronounce. The author's purpose, I think was to educate people about fast food. I did like the part when he talked about a school in California that cooked their own food from vegetables in their garden. I found the people fighting against fast food industries commendable for their work and I liked to hear their stories.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Look at Fast Food the Same Way Again.......2007-09-07

Did you know that if you take the 13 million hamburgers that Americans eat every year and put them in a straight line, they could circle the earth more than 32 times?

Did you know that chickens are sometimes thrown against walls as a form of slaughter?

Startling facts such as these appear in "Chew on This," which weaves historical summaries, shocking statistics, and moving profiles of teens whose lives have been tainted by the fast food industry.

The authors reveal facts that big businesses will not, such as what makes fast food manufacturing methods so unhealthy, how fast food workers are taken advantage of, and how shifty advertising techniques are used to tempt kids to eat junk food.

After reading "Chew on This," you won't look at fast food the same way again. Some of you may even decide to boycott these businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Read This!.......2007-07-05

The fast food companies target your children with their advertising, so why not give your child the opportunity to hear the other side of the story. And when your teen is finished reading the book, you should take the opportunity to read it as well.

Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson make some excellent points about the fast food industry and how they have built customer loyalty through appealing to what children want. If children endlessly beg their parents to go to these fast food places, parents will give in. Fast food industries have built a bazillion dollar industry by brainwashing your child. Take your kid back! (And while you're at it, you can eat healthier too.)

My 13 year old recently read this book. She was horrified to know what kind of conditions the animals live in before they are slaughtered for your "Happy Meal." She read with disgust about the crushed insects that make your drink pink. After reading this book, she has become much more health conscious, and I don't hear a single request to eat at a fast food restaurant.

Then, I read the book. I was additionally horrified to learn about the conditions workers in third world countries endure while producing those cheap plastic toys for spoiled American children. I was also disheartened by the way the fast food industry weilds power in schools by funding badly needed school programs while monopolizing food choices within schools. Schools are caught in a Catch 22 of sorts as they decide whether or not to serve unhealthy cheeseburgers and fries for lunch, or give up programs that benefit children. Schools shouldn't have to choose between those things. At the end of the book, the authors point out that we can help our children to have better choices. Schools in Berkeley, CA have school gardens and suppliers of organic foods. The children learn to garden and cook their own meals. I wish my daughter's school did this.

In my opinion, our nation of spoiled children want toys with their food, and play places where they can play instead of eat their food. (If you could call a cheeseburger, fries and soda "food.")

And, while kids play with cheap plastic toys (for about 15 minutes and then never again) and jump around in filthy ball pits, adults sit at the tables eating the unwanted kids meal along with the Big Mac they already ate. No wonder people are putting on the pounds.

We can all benefit from reading books like this and educating ourselves on the real harm being done in this country by overly processed, trans fat laden "fast food." Make a better choice for yourself and your children. This book will inspire you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A cook book for spirituality.......2007-06-06

This book is one of the clearest, most concise spiritual books I have ever read. People who review it badly, must be Fundamentalist Christians or just negative human beings. If you read this book with an open heart and mind, it says it all. It gives you everything you need to be a happy, fulfilled human being and to manifest good in your life and the lives of others. It is so short and simple, I call it a Cookbook for life. Get it and read it again and again. But if you are a negative, dogmatic, closed minded person, don't get it. You won't understand it anyway. Otherwise get a copy for you and all your friends and loved ones. Peace and love to you, Wayne Dyer. God bless you!

1 out of 5 stars Very boring and condescending book.......2007-03-19

Dyer thinks he's God. I'm tired of his constant criticism about everything and everyone. Now in this book if you want to look young or lose weight you're selfish and a bad person. Then in his lectures he says you can reverse time. He says whatever he wants to make money and I find him a hypocrite. Every principle is that he writes if from some great enlightenment in his life. Why didn't he pay the Catholic Church for stealing St. Francis' prayer. The catholic church is not happy with Wayne Dyer and that's something you can research on the net. He takes what he wants to make money off of innocent people.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-02-28

Manifest Your Destiny encourages you to step into your own PLACE OF POWER. It encourages you to do so and lets you know that it is your spiritual right to do so. Furthermore, this book gives you the techniques and information necessary for you to live your life in authentic power. "Never ever a victim " is the consciousness that grows out of reading and applying the information in this book. Truly awesome! Peace and love!

5 out of 5 stars A good accompaniment to the CD's of the same name.......2007-02-20

Dr. Dyer has once again presented the spiritual and metaphysical universe directly and succinctly, encouraging us to step back inside ourselves to access the infinite. I found this book to be a wonderful accompaniment to the CD set by the same name.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-02-07

As I always feel about Wayne D. It was a perfect insight into a healthy way to focus one's wants and desires. Whenever I need spiritual help I run to Wayne's media to help me to look for my inward needs to be met.

A very good book. This book helps talk about and answer questions about a very touchy subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-03-31

I bought this when my daughter was 12. We read it together and then she kept it as a review for future reference. She continued to look back at it as she had questions over the next few years. It was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone with a daughter nearing puberty. It was age appropriate and gains a stamp of approval from a conservative mom.

4 out of 5 stars Good for preteen and young teenage girls (10 to 13).......2007-02-02

My [...]daughter was excited to read this book on her own. I scanned through it and read parts of the book to make sure it was appropriate for her. She asked me questions about things in the book and even wanted to try inserting a tampon but got to scared!

I got my period a few days before I turned 12 so I really wanted to wait and get it for her when she was 10 or 11 but I'm glad I got it over with earlier because now she knows ahead of time. I remember when I was a preteen some girls got their periods as young as 9 and 10.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the graphic nature of the book and how my daughter seemed to get scared reading the book but I think it was because she's only 9 and in [...].

Good book bought it for my daughter she really enjoyed reading it. A+++++++++

5 out of 5 stars What a Book!.......2006-06-28

I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter, she took off with it and I never saw it again. She told me she was reading it and that it was "really good". I wouldn't know...I haven't seen what's between the covers! Based on my daughter's reaction, I would recommend this to all parents of girls. If your daughter is like mine and the slightest HINT of the "visiting friend" comes up in conversation, she runs screaming. With this little volume, she can lock herself in her room and get all her questions answered. A must-have.

4 out of 5 stars I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams, I am, I am, Iam.......2007-09-23

This book has given me an insight to how the universe works, it's easy to follow and understand and explains why and how to make it work!
Brilliant!!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2007-09-12

Somehow I knew by my earliest childhood that the whole life works under the same princip. Simply, it had to be the truth, and finally now, at the age of fifty I'm exploring fascinating story from the opposite side of the world!
Like a ferry tale. So, I allready believe. Who knows where I will be guided to, after I apply these technics in my life?

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on how to attract Abundance into your life.......2007-08-01

I have read many long winded books on how to make your life rich and abundant. This is a short book and gets quickley to the point.
Simple to read and explains very clearly the steps you need to take. Tom Pauley's amusing little stories give his book, great credibility.

I would heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but could have been better!.......2007-07-11

I liked this book a lot, and it was very interesting. I especially liked the "assignment" of buying a .79 cent spiral notebook, and creating the lists of what you want in life. I still use the notebook, and refer to it often keeping it updated. The book could have been MUCH better, but sadly, the authors use it to pitch their $2,500 Quantum Selling and Quantum Marketing seminars!

3 out of 5 stars Tithing--what it really means.......2007-06-12

Emmett Fox talks about tithing as giving a tenth of your joy, happiness, positive emotions, etc. to God. He suggests giving what you can, when you feel moved to do so. That sounds like a lot better way to view tithing, to me. God doesn't need your money--and this book even says not to ask the Universe for money.
I think some of this is a good exercise, but there are better sources for the same information, but everyone learns in different ways. I think Neville Goddard is better, in terms of explaining the deeper aspects of the Law of Attraction. Emmett Fox is more appealing to me. But, as a starter on this type of work, this book is OK.

5 out of 5 stars ..........and Finally.......2007-10-03

....at last I really do think I've found the book I've been looking for & if you're reading this & thinking will "this one" help "me" achieve my aims at getting my life on the move to becoming successful - then I say unequivocally - YES!!, this is the one for you.

I've read hundreds of so-called self-help books both modern & old and Brian Tracy's "Goals" sums up ALL of the books I've ever read on the subject. It's like a hundred books all in one covering everything from Motivation, Confidence, Time Management, Self Belief & Worth & oh yes & how to set realistic & achievable Goals!

The beauty with all of these requisites for success is that we all have these qualities to one degree or another & Brian inspires us by telling us that any one of these attributes is "learnable". So no matter where you find yourself today on what "may appear" to be a long road, you can start straight away.

This ought to be the very last book you buy on the subject, but before you read (& more importantly re-read) it, make sure you have a fresh note-book (preferably A4) & scribe to hand. The book is jam packed with all the essential information to kick you off in the right direction the minute you start reading. If you feel you really must do some more research then there is an extensive bibliography at the back.

The book ends with a summery of the 21 successful tips in setting & achieving these goals. Also there is a summery to be found at the end of each chapter for easy future reference.

Written in a modern, clear, interesting, easy readable style & language. It's broken down into easily digestible chunks in such a way that makes you want to read a little bit more. You never stop learning & it's never too late to start [something new].

Don't be put off or judge the book by the BOLD but plain looking & unattractive cover. It's Brian's message that counts & he very cleverly uses famous quotes from the Greats of the past.

4 out of 5 stars Setting Goals.......2007-09-15

I give this book a 4 because I feel that it is more for the outside worker than it is for an indepentpent worker. I found a lot that seemed to be for the worker who has a "boss" than me being my own boss. However, I read the book through, then reread it looking more into it. I did come across things that I feel will help as long as followed through. The tasks are reasonable in doing. Does it seem hard to make a list of things to accomplish today? Right there you have set goals and followed through. There is a lot more in there, it will help you go from daily goals to weekly, monthly and yearly goals. I would recommend that purchasing his book "Eat That Frog!", they go hand in hand. Both books set on my desk and get looked at daily, to make sure I am following through and creating better habits of myself, to make better habits for my sales. Goals!, will get you going, teaching how to go get your sales instead of waiting and hoping for them to just come to you.

I loved his frog book but this is just great too. It is an outline on how to really write goals that you need and want to make changes in your personal and career life. Not too fluffy like some self help books. If you are looking to make changes in your life and need help putting together a map to get where you want to.

Good luck with everything you.

Excellent book - includes some basic information as well as some great techniques for success. This is the best Brian Tracy book that I've read so far. It actually caused a paradigm shift for me in how I view goals and goal setting. As always, Brian presents the information in a way that unlocks the meaning right before your eyes.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars NOT the real 'Steel Magnolia'.......2007-09-25

Sometimes lovely and insightful but mostly silly and stereotypical. There is a great deal of snobbery in this book even though this Southern Lady claims to have had hard times they are more along the lines of chipping a nail or running out of Aquanet. I gave it 2 stars because the great embellishment and novelty of her southern lala land is somewhat entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Making Southern Women Look Bad.......2007-08-18

What a disappointment. I can't believe anyone would write a book advocating flirting and high heels to get ahead at work. Take it from a native Southern woman - we are not as superficial and silly as this book makes us appear.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless Trash.......2007-05-09

Probably one of the most pompous, self-inflated pieces of writing I have ever read. Ronda Rich creates a romanticized world of Southern women in which the largest majority of Southern girls seductively drawl their words, manipulate men into getting what they want, represent the highest apex of class and style and do it all with grit, spunk and modesty.

In reality, anyone who lives in the South knows that Ms. Rich is full of bull to put it nicely. The MAJORITY of Southern women are NOT perfectly manicured belles of class and distinction. As I was reading this book, I was overwhelmed by the sensation that Ms. Rich has decided that the South IS everything she's seen in Gone With the Wind and that she is the Scarlett O'Hara of her own little delusional world.

Among the most offensive paragraphs in this book (and there are many), the one that shocked me most was the notion that when a man in a position of authority - like a boss or co-worker - tries to feel "a Southern woman" up, we don't do slap him or claim sexual harassment, but instead tell him to be nice in an "enchanting, lilting tone." Is this woman kidding? She is suggesting that you respond to unwanted sexual advances by saying no, but in a suggestive tone? Maybe women like these are the ones that some men say "were asking for it."

TRUE Southern women don't bat their eyelashes at unwanted sexual advances, nor do they often file sexual harassment charges. Most often, they let the man know that if he touches them again, he's gonna get decked and have to explain to all the guys in the office how he got that black eye.

If you are interested in "scoring" a high-earning, powerful husband through your seductive femininity, then this is the book for you. But be forewarned, the author also wants you to understand that you will NEVER come first in his book, and you should accept that, like "all Southern women do." Also, even if you are married, you should still "flirt shamelessly" with other men as "all Southern women know" in order to get what you want.

In addition, as "all Southern women know," you CAN have it all. You should pursue your career like "strong, determined Southern women do", do everything you can to please your husband (or any other man you may want something from), bake from scratch, give all your remaining attention to your children, and still be able to throw elaborate holiday displays all year. Of course, like "all Southern women", you must do this with grace, dignity, a fresh manicure, and perfectly applied makeup.

I have yet to meet this Southern belle that Ms. Rich describes. I HAVE seen many harried, miserable Southern women in the upper and upper-middle classes trying to achieve this ideal to keep from being scorned by their peers (which Ms. Rich admits on more than one occasion they WILL BE!)These women are "esteemed" of sorts by their peers, always look their best, attend every social function, have their kids in all the right programs, etc.

What SMART Southern women know is that while these girls are pecked together like a bunch of hens, clucking about how classy they are, their husbands are flirting with the cocktail waitresses. These women live in a world of fantasy and savage competition with each other. They desperately crave the approval and attention of everyone around them. Ms. Rich extols the virtues all the while covering the pettiness, jealousy, and insecurity that lies at the root of what even she proclaims as the most judgmental women in the country.

The essence of the truth about these "most esteemed" Southern women is found on page 173, where Ms. Rich advises you to NEVER talk about your problems outside of your family, and sometimes not even within your family. Herein lies the core of the code of the South - APPEAR perfect in every way by never admitting that anything is less than perfect in your life. This is the heart of Ms. Rich's book. Many people are dazzled by these Southern vixens' charm because they don't ever see what lies beneath.

Ms. Rich tries to paint a picture of a perfect woman, but she doesn't exist. If you want a guide on how to manipulate men or how to become a shell of a person whose existence depends on fitting in to "high society" then you will enjoy this book. If you want a real guide on how to be a lady, considerate of others feelings, and a person of true class, you'd be better of reading Judith Martin or something equivalent. This book belongs in the trash can.

By the way, there is no stereotype that can cover every Southern woman. We are fiercly independent and cannot be labeled. We share some common traits, but our unpredictability and individuality make it so that pidgeonholing the way Southern women act and live can be a pretty daunting task.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-03-08

I almost wish she didn't write this book so all our secrets wouldn't be given out. But she describes southern women perfectly -- we are sugar and spice. Highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars She is Wrong.......2006-12-29

This book is great, and I love it, however I think the author should have checked a few facts better. On page 210 she writes that Blythewood, SC has an annual Kudzu Festival, however she is wrong. I was born and subsequently raised in Blythewood, SC and there was never a Kudzu Festival. The town is a very small town in Richland County, South Carolina, that I believe, she confused with another Blythewood. There is another Blythewood, and there is a Kudzu Festival, I do not know what state it is in, it is not South Carolina though.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!.......2007-07-08

This book is NOT the book you are looking for. Find the American Girl book on this subject and you will be so impressed and pleased with the beautiful way it handles this subject. Your little girls will become so confident and feel secure about the changes, rather than worried and confused by the inappropriate material that is in this book.

BTW, my daughter has been raised on a ranch and probably knows more about reproduction and sex than all the four and five star givers on here that think I'm being naive or "prudish" about this topic.

The title of this book, "The Period Book", is SO misleading, and would cause many to believe it is a book for young girls learning about the changes coming to their bodies and why they happen. It is not, and the material in this book would be more for older girls or young women who have made the choice to become sexually active(and have started and learned about "periods", etc. so why this title?).
Read it, word for word before handing it to your young daughters!
BE VERY WARY AND SUSPICIOUS OF THE ONES ON HERE HYPING THIS BOOK AND GIVING GOOD REVIEWS!! THEY HAVE NO OTHER REVIEWS ON ANY OTHER PRODUCT FROM AMAZON! THEY ARE HERE TO HYPE AND SELL THIS BOOK!

For instance, this book tells you that you can get pregnant if sperm is on a finger and it is put "inside of you". This is absolutely ridiculous in a book they are recommending to nine year olds to learn about growing up, emotions, body changes and starting menstruation! (As if getting pregnant is the only troublesome aspect if someone is "placing a finger with sperm" in them at their ages?)

ThIS author has written supernatural and horoscope books before, and other odd titles and how does that even qualify her to write about such a topic regarding OUR kids and a company like Amazon to even carry it? Simply she is qualified because she has a 14 year old neice?! Give me a break! This book also goes on into how to position legs and behave for an OBGyn, birth control pills, etc.
If you want a book that will make your daughter feel beautiful, confident, in control of her body and what happens to it, and proud to be growing up, look at the American Girl book here on Amazon.
I literally threw this "period" book in the trash. You will too.
To the author of this book:
SHAME ON YOU for using clever illustrations, a misleading title, and presentation on such a poorly written, completely off the mark book for young girls. You are taking financial advantage of moms looking for that special book about growing up for sharing with their young daughters.

5 out of 5 stars GET THIS BOOK FOR YOUR DAUGHTERS........2007-07-03

My mother got this book for me before I actually started my period and truth be told, I WAS HORRIFIED. We picked it up in Target and I wouldn't even stand in line with her because we had this sketchy book about "gross stuff." But then I actually read it and it spoke to me. Periods ARE scary when you first get them and talking about it with parents can sometimes be a hard road. However, this book advocates girls getting to know their bodies and being open with themselves and parents.
Yes, the book does address sex. But I knew about sex back then (oh, 8 years ago) and kids definitely know about it now. It's not pornographic, it's educational. Girls often wonder WHY they are getting their periods and sex is apart of that. It's the body telling a female that they were able to have a child and now with the period the window of opportunity is over. It also advocates taking your period and being responsible. Taking care of yourself is the main issue in this book. There is plenty of information in the pages of this book that helped me when I started my period. Some stuff people just don't talk about which is unfortunate. It's good to know there is a community of females out there going through this as well.
Anyone who negates the fact that sex is apart of periods obviously does not know what's going on with their bodies. And honestly, it's better to get the lines of communication going between parents and children and this book definitely does so.

5 out of 5 stars A Concise and Comprehensive Book for Tweens.......2007-05-26

I'm very impressed with this book. As my 10 year old has begun to ask more detailed questions about getting her period, I chose this book. I was very pleased to find how straightforward and helpful this book is.

Covered topics include most changes with puberty, choosing sanitary products, a helfpul and thorough overview of the developing female anatomy, visiting the gynecologist for the first time, personal health and body image. Every chapter conveys the necessary information while being brief and casual in tone.

Unlike some reviewers, I found the extremely brief introduction to sexuality was perfect and appropriate. The images of male anatomy are very simple cartoonish illustrations and in good context to the sections they appear in. The focus is not rushing into sex and encourages open communication with parents. This small introduction appears near the end of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the "tweener" set.......2007-02-22

Even though my 10 year hasn't gotten her period yet, she loves this book. It holds her interest and speaks to her level. A great preparation tool.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, engaging introduction to puberty for girls.......2006-09-23

Although the main topic is menstruation, this book covers all of the physical changes a girl can expect as she approaches and moves through puberty. It addresses, in an interesting and calm tone, all of the questions a girl might face, from where the blood comes from, to being patient if your breast development is slower than your best friend's. It is reassuring, thorough, and my 10-year-old couldn't put it down! I found her awake way past bedtime, reading this book. She is engrossed in it, and this has led to some wonderful discussion between us, on the responsibilities of growing up, and needing to respect your own body.
I would recommend this book for any girl over 10.who is starting to wonder about her period.

Praise

“People and dogs have a simple, unwritten contract: The dog provides the devotion, love, companionship and work while we accept the responsibility of providing food, water, shelter, healthcare in life and death, and hopefully some love in return. Unfortunately, we as people often fall short. Dogs rarely do. Tracie Hotchner has written a book that will help us keep up our side of the bargain.”
--Dr. Barry C. Browning, B.V.M. & S., M.R.C.V.S.

“I believe Ms. Hotchner was a dog in a previous life. Her perspective is that detailed and complete. Since I speak "dog" fluently and converse with my three canines, Lucy, Henry and the "diva" Frances, we have agreed that it is the finest book about dogs ever written.”
-Jamie Lee Curtis

“My three dogs, Veronica, Lulu, and Max, are all barking, `Finally! The book we've all been waiting for!' Everything you've ever wanted or needed to know about your dog is in here. Hooray!”
-Joan Rivers

“Damn, wish I was your puppy...”

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The BEST!!!.......2006-09-21

I LOVE the Dog Bible. It actually is a means to calm down, get control of our human emotions and realize that the stress we are feeling is normal; that our pets are our kids; that we need to love them & realize that WE must learn to communicate BETTER. Bless the author for this fabulous insight into man's best friend.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2006-08-27

The Dog Bible is a very complete, easy to follow guide to all things dog. It proved very helpful in training my family's willful Pomeranian puppy, and I plan on using it to train my own puppy. An excellent value!

1 out of 5 stars she's an expert on being an expert!.......2006-07-22

This is the same author, childless herself, who has sold many copies of her books about having a baby, with the same kind of know-it-all authority and poor advice based on absolutely nothing. Hotchner has no credentials, and she also has no real insights or tremendously thoughtful or original points to make about raising and training dogs, which would in fact be credential enough. She has some very silly ideas about dog nutrition and lots of other dubious and wrongheaded advice on training, and she does like to talk about herself. She is a true dog lover, it seems, and her advice is probably a bit more sound than her baby advice was in the past, but why buy this particular book?

5 out of 5 stars Latest, Greatest.......2006-05-06

Each time I go to use my Dog Bible as reference, I get lost in it, following threads of interest. Enjoying all the latest info, and the author's opinions on subjects from behavior and specific breeds to debate on vaccination. Even dog people who believe in their good understanding (or maybe especially those) of what makes a dog tick, will find a useful perspective in this book! Everyone with or without dogs should have access to the Dogs and Children chapter and Scooby's rules for kids.

1 out of 5 stars For a book that calls itself the Dog Bible, I'm not a believer.......2006-04-29

Any book that insinuates that people that own pit bull type dogs (APBTs, Staffies, etc) are either macho, are unintentionally trying to put their families at risk, or just plain criminal gets a thumb down from me. Furthermore, any author who seems to have very few credentials in dog behavior (she's not a vet, a behaviorist, a trainer, or a biologist) and ostensibly calls her book the Dog Bible and actually believes that the majority of pit bull attacks were seemingly unprovoked either a) has no idea about dog behavior and knows the other factors going into any dog attacks (pit bull or not) and/or b) is foolish enough to believe the media pot stirring over these dogs is just plain stupid or maybe secretly afraid of these dogs. I don't own a pit bull myself, but I have a Belgian Malinois and a Siberian husky/Rottweiler mix. I appologize to Ms. Hotchner for not owning a dog that's a shrinking violet. Sorry, I'm surely I'm up to no good.

You can't go wrong with ANY of his book. Don't look further, don't settle for less.
Unbelievable thing has happened to me -- I followed the advise in the book and received the promotion I wanted. Funny thing is that Roger warned that this method DOES work, and I didn't think it would work, but decided to give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars A psychological masterpiece.......2005-10-24

Wow. That's all I have to say. I'm halfway through this book, looking to finish it today (lol dreaming to), and I'm absolutely amazed. I have a hobby of studying books on psychology and sociology, and I've came across some good ones and some absolute rip-offs. Some of the bad ones go over some persuasion techniques that are very cliche and you have probably already heard of, and also don't offer much in the realm of content. In this book, however, every page has something to offer, and and it's all unique. What I expected out of this book was either a complete rip-off or that only a small bit of it would be useful, but I was very surprised at how satisfied I was with it. Among all the techniques in there I've found a lot that can be used in every day life, and I can actually imagine them working. It explains a lot about persuasion techniques you've came across but didn't recognize as such, and opens your eyes to an entirely new world of persuasion altogether. I'm actually planning on reading this book two or three times, and I think after that I might actually be a better persuader than I was before I bought it. All in all, this book is very professional and offers tons and tons of content. The authors life, which he uses ocassionally for examples in his techniques, shows how amazingly successful he is without it seeming like he's bragging. He has rented yaghts, probably went to every country in the world, has hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, climbs mountains, crazy. Anyway, if you're into persusasion I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining to Read.......2004-11-06

Some of the topics in this book are just common-sense, some have been widely covered elsewhere and at much greater length (e.g. Cialdini's books on Influence), but all in all this is a lovely selection of the principles of persuasion and some case stories are very entertaining to read.

This book is information-rich, but there is still more you may want to learn to enhance your persuasive skills, such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotic Language Patterns.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best business books I've read.......2002-07-10

Wow! I'm impressed! This is one of the best-researched, most thorough books on persuasion that I've had the pleasure of reading. Best of all - it's not just theory. The author, Roger Dawson adds tons of practical examples and applications for each technique. That means you can use this stuff immediately. By far one the best business books I've read in some time.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of Power Persuasion: Everything You'll Ever Need to.......2002-07-09

Great book. Extremely insightful. This book brings together lessons from many other disciplines and supplies new perspectives that are easy to apply. The book is easy to read and a diversified literary and historical background allow you to appreciate the subtle points that really demonstrate expertise in persuasion.

5 out of 5 stars Best summary for success principles.......2007-09-10

This is my very first review for a book. This book is such a great success book that I wanted to recommend this book to everyone. This is a much more refined version of Brian Tracy's earlier work "The Psychology of Achievement" which I have heard numerous times.

I have read many books on success but this book really summarizes the best principles from all. It is a very practical and easy to follow book with action items after each topic. In fact there is so much in this book, that every time you read/listen to this book you will learn and be inspired to do something new and better. As Brian Tracy says, success can be learnt best from successful people. And he is a great example of a success.

The biggest thing I got from Brian Tracy's books is that I am responsible for my own success. Rather than blaming people or circumstances, this book made me focus on doing things rather than staying in the blaming loop.

All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to be more successful in any aspect of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Great Advice you can Use!.......2007-05-05

Brian's advice on goals is really great and will help push you towards achieving your goals. I like how this CD is focused on the topic of goals and how to propel yourself towards your goals as fast as possible. He really knows what he's talking about. His CD's are always well-organized, practical, and based 100% on solid, practical real world experience. He gives a lot of strategies, so what I do is I listen to the whole thing and I pick a few things to apply to my life. Then later I listen again and apply a few more things. It's probably too much for anyone to try to use all his advice at one time. The more I learn about business and success, the more I learn that Brian Tracy is 100% correct in everything he says.

I highly recommend getting EVERYTHING by Brian Tracy. It's all great stuff. I also recommend books and CD's by Napoleon Hill and Harv Eker.

What I like about Brian is that he has a lifetime of successful experience in the business world and only tells you things that are truly useful. He doesn't waste your time with impractical drivel. I always say learn from the best, and Brian is one of the very best.
