Book Description
"It is a magnificent album that pays off on every bet ever placed on him—and it should crack his future wide open." - Rolling Stone, on the 1975 release of Bruce Springsteen’s album Born To Run.
Photographer Eric Meola was hired thirty years ago to do a photo shoot which resulted in the iconic rock n’ roll album Born to Run. This magnificent book recreates that photography session, contains all of Bruce’s lyrics, and includes an introduction by distinguished popular music writer Daniel Wolff.
Bruce Springsteen is one of the most important songwriters and performers of the last three decades. Born to Run is the album that put Bruce Springsteen on the cover of both Newsweek and Time. It is a timeless snapshot of Americana—all sweaty, high energy, and tuned to a carnival-like level. For many critics of the day, Born to Run made Springsteen the most important artist of his generation. It was this album that Springsteen’s songs first portrayed a glorious yet very real side of the American Dream.
In this book, Eric Meola shares the photographic alternates and outtakes, most for the very first time, in stunning black- and-white quadratones, more than thirty years after the album’s release. In addition to the many never-before –seen photographs, here for the first time and in one place are all of the lyrics from this iconic American album.
Customer Reviews:
Opportunity to see a classic album cover in the making.......2007-05-14
There are some really fantastic photographs in this book. Born to Run is a classic album with a classic cover. These previously unseen images are very clear and detailed and give a great insight into the 1975 album photo shoot. In my mind, it's hard imaging any other image gracing the cover. However there is a unique opportunity with this book to see what could have been. If you love rock photographs and you're a Springsteen fan I recommend this book.
Great for your Springsteen super fan.......2007-01-21
Purchased as a gift for an all time super fan of Springsteen. He loved the book. A must have for any Springsteen fan.
Worth the wait .......2007-01-10
When I opened up this book for the first time I couldn't believe to quality of the production.
There is a protective cardboard box which encases a display box for the book itself.
The display box is a little larger than the size of a vinyl album and then when opened there is a copy of an album cover on the inside and the book on the other.
Each book has a signed and numbered reference from Meola to record which copy of the 1350 published is yours and a reference to the fact that all of Meola's proceeds are being donated to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words and these speak volumes. As you can imagine there are a number of shots which have been taken close together so you pick up on the character and personality of Springsteen. The standard of photographs is outstanding and have been reproduced in this book to an excellent standard.
There are also the lyrics reproduced from the album which when combined with the photos make this an oustanding production.
If you can make the investment, buy the limited edition as it is such a high quality and worthwile production.
Don't be fooled.......2006-12-13
So that there is not any question, the signed copy contains the signature of the author and not Bruce. When I purchased the limited edition for $195 I assumed it contained Springsteen's autograph.
Sparks fly on E Street.......2006-11-01
This beautifully designed book takes you inside a historic moment in rock: When Springsteen finished "Born to Run" and stood on the edge of greatness. Everything was at stake and anything was possible. Meola captures perfectly the guy, the time, the feeling. It's an intimate look that words could not convey. Buy it. The clincher: The money goes to a good cause, New Jersey's food bank.

Book Description
Earth, 2063. Long-dormant magical forces have reawakened, and the creatures of mankind's legends and nightmares have come out of hiding. Megacorporations act as the new world superpowers, and the dregs of society fight for their own power. Sliding through the cracks in between are shadowrunners-underworld professionals who will do anything for a profit, and anything it takes to get the job done.
Kellan Colt has come to Seattle to make a name for herself. But her first run proves that in her line of work, there's no such thing as a sure thing, and that in her world, there is only one law-survival.
Customer Reviews:
Nice easy read.......2007-07-03
This was a fun book, easy to read and a descent intro to the Shadowrun universe.
The plot was a little thin and you could see many of the twists a mile away, but it was an entertaining read and worth a look.
Overall a good book to start reading the shadowrun series and for those new to shadowrun.
Enjoyable introduction to new series........2006-10-25
I am always on the lookout for new franchises to get involved in and Shadowrun caught me by surprise as I was about to exit my fave Sci-Fi shop empty-handed. I had never heard of it before and I thought it had a really cool cover, so I decided to check it out.
Set in the future, when America and Canada have been divided up into smaller nations and magic have come back into the world. Humans now live alongside trolls, goblins and elves and MegaCorporations run the world. Industrial Espionage is rife and the people who make money living in the shadows of these companies are the shadowrunners. Using their magical powers as an edge to get things done.
The main character of Kellan Kolt is fairly new to the Shadowrun scene, so as she learns the basics, the reader does too. Which I thought was a nice way to introduce people who are unfamiliar with the franchise to the Shadowrun universe. There is not a huge amount of techno-jargon or complicated lingo, though I do suspect that this sort of stuff will appear in later books.
The Shadowrun series has been around for about 10 or so years and there are already dozens of books before this. But I believe this is a reboot of the franchise or a brand new splinter story arc. Either way, I will be reading more.
Their Baack!!.......2006-09-29
While the reappearance of the Shadowrun series has been a mixed blessing over all, the lead off trilogy is something of a treat for jaded eyes. They are the story of Kellan Colt who has decided to move to the Seattle from Kansas City in a determined effort to become a a shadowrunner in the place where runners go for the big run and either crash and burn or settle into a life of comfort. In no time at all she is drawing unwanted attention and an early crisis reveals unexpected magical skills. When a lucky break offers her the opportunity to become the student of Lothan, a troll wizard, Kellan seizes the opportunity. When she isn't practicing spell casting she's taking part in some of Lothan's bizness. With mixed results.
But her big day appears to be on the way. Lothan has been hired for a major weapons run and Kellan is to play a major part. In most Shadowrun novels the problem is that the runs never come off as expect. This time it's the opposite case. The problem is that the run works perfectly, but the Johnson pays off even though the catch is a load of bargain store electronics. Kellan, ever one to look a gift horse in the mouth investigates more than she should, and manages to turn a mundane run into a web of intrigue and betrayal.
Kellan is a sympathetic character, seeking success and the truth about her mother. She is a bit too assertive and often creates her own problems, but this isn't unexpected in the world of Shadowrun where if you don't grab your share, someone else will. Stephen Kenson writes smoothly and comfortably about the complicated world of Shadowrun with its whole different spin on ethnic and national differences. It's a world where you can inherit talents or have them installed and it takes someone like Kenson to make a tale that works at all levels.
Quick Read, Great Intro to Shadowrun.......2006-07-08
I haven't read any previous Shadowrun novels so I am not biased by that. I have played the game some and read some of the sourcebooks. Born to Run starts off a whole new series with a new cast of characters. The writing is not difficult to read, and the action is fast paced. You get to know some of the shadowrunners in Seattle, and follow the career of a new runner named Kellan Colt. Because the story plays out from Kellan's perspective most of the time, you learn the world of shadowrunning along with her. I consider this book to be light reading, and it won't win any literary awards, but it was a really fun read and I enjoyed it immensely. I recommend it for anyone new to the world of Shadowrun or even to more seasoned Shadowrun fans who want to go back to their roots.
Amateur reading material.......2006-06-04
While following the life and times of an up and coming runner can be made into an interesting story, this book is not one of them.
The book follows along an acceptable storyline, however it feels like it was written for teenagers, or perhaps pre-teens as it was overly simple to read and felt like someone's first novel...ever. I would not recommend this book to anyone with a high school reading level as it will bore you to death. Could be decent for those interested in some fast paced action and bathroom material but other than it doesn't hold much promise.

Not a biography in the true sense of the word.......2007-03-06
I was looking for a biography of Bruce Springsteen so read this one. This is a critique of Springsteen's albums, songs and shows. It does tell you when he was born and goes into some details about his first bands, including who was in them. But if you're looking for an in-depth study of what Bruce Springsteen did that made him "The Boss," you won't find it here. Marsh's theories about Rock, Punk, Pop and Disco are a highly personalized POV driven largely from the perspective of exactly when he grew up. Historically, it is easy to disagree with him. Most of this book is a psudopsychological study of what he thinks Springsteen was talking about in each album and many songs up to and including "Darkness At the Edge of Town." If you love Springsteen, as I do, you'll no doubt find this interesting at least as far as you agree with Marsh. But if you want to know the family dynamics that drove Springsteen, the real issues around his short-lived college career, the exact circumstance around his traumatic motorcycle accident, how he learned to play guitar and how he learned to sing as he does, the whole story around his gigs at The Stone Pony, how he learned to command a stage, any depth to his personality, talent, and interactive behavior, you will not find them here. This "biography" is a lot more about what Dave Marsh thinks about Bruce Springsteen than it is about Springsteen, himself. When you consider the depth of detail a writer like David McCullough can raise about people dead 100 years, am I expecting too much to want that kind of detail about a living person? Personally, I don't think so.
Marsh's best Springsteen book.......2006-02-16
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that Dave Marsh has a Springsteen goo-goo, but "Born To Run", which I believe is his first book on Bruce, suffers quite a bit less for it than the books that followed. Here, Marsh did a nice job of describing Springsteen's childhood and early adulthood and didn't have quite as much time and space to worship. I bought this book as a beach read in 1984, and for a while I found myself referring back to it fairly regularly, but since reading the others in Marsh's Springsteen line-up, I've kind of retired it to the status of fondly remembered relic. Bruce just isn't the same anymore either.
Infectious but flawed........2002-06-11
June 10, 2002
In `Born To Run', biographer Dave Marsh successfully
immerses the reader in the origin and background of
both Bruce Springteen and the Jersey Shore of the
sixties and seventies. Some might chafe at the
occasionally purple prose (and praise), but Marsh's
tendency (not always forgivable) towards hyperbole
and emotionalism is indicative of the genuinely
live-or-die-with-Rock-And-Roll mandate by which its
subjects once lived their lives.
Particularly strong is the first half of the book,
wherein Marsh effectively paints New Jersey's
familial sixties Rock And Roll scene, the sort of
rebellious regional musical brewing pot that has
reinvented itself repeatedly across the continent
in any number of regions over the last thirty years.
The difference here is that Bruce's was the first
generation of working class youths to grow up in the
shadow of Elvis, and the Beatles, and Motown, and
rock's first great era. To these kids, Rock And Roll
was more than just something interesting to listen to
on your phonograph before supper. It was a revelation,
almost a religion.
Once the scene shifts to the late seventies and the
music industry, Marsh's take on things skews further.
His deification of Springsteen seems to be based on
little more than Bruce's having managed to not grow
a pot belly, "sell out", beat up his girlfriend, or
get busted for drugs. (Although, admittedly, that
does put the man in rare company for the times.)
The companion book to this effort, `Glory Days', isn't
too interesting, but `Born To Run', whether or not you
dig Bruce's music, packs a potent punch. As a glimpse
into an age of innocence and passion, it's inspiring
and re-readable . . .
. . . and it'll make you want to start a band and hit
the road.
For Any Fan of the Boss Who Likes to Read.......2002-04-21
From his early days as an anonymous cover band guitarist on the Jersey Shore in the 60's, to this tag as the 2nd coming of Bob Dylan, to his triumph on the covers of Time and Newsweek, to his protracted legal battles with his manager, to finally balancing commercial success and artistic integrity on the 1980 double LP 'The River', "Born to Run" covers Bruce Springsteen's career from the 70's as he emerged as one of rock's brightest stars.
Dave Marsh portrays Springsteen as nothing short of a rock god - a visionary whose singular focus on his music carried him to the top of the rock heirarchy, who cared way more about personal and artistic integrity than he ever did about making a buck, whose whose songwriting talent was so great he never wrote a bad song, and whose worst act (other than taking too long to make his albums)was to pull an Axl Rose and dive into the audience to stop a photographer (an ex-girlfriend no less) from taking unauthorized pics at a No Nukes concert.
Aside from Marsh's penchant for placing the Boss on a pedastal, there are alot of intersting facts, tidbits, stories and analysis of the music that make it an enjoyable if not quite easy read. If you are a fan or even interested in the Boss, this is an essential read.
Too Much Hero-Worship to be Objective.......2002-02-08
Dave Marsh may be THE most pompous writer to ever cover popular music, and he is completely blind to his own prejudices. He is incapable of defending his analysis, but rather hands out his opinions with an air that utterly dismisses any thought that they might be anything short of proven fact.
In Springsteen, Marsh has a subject on which he is absolutely incapable of objectivity. According to Marsh, Springsteen has never written, much less recorded, a weak song. Marsh's attempt to assign profound meaning to mediocrities such as "Drive All Night" and "The Price You Pay" would be funny if not offered with such smug seriousness.
That said, the book offers much good early biographical information, even if it is very one-sided. However, an artist like Springsteen deserves the attention of a writer willing to be objective about the subject.

Car Talk: Why You Should Never Listen CD to Your Father When It Comes to Cars
ASIN: 1565118812 |
Book Description
Why do so many songs make car ownership and driving seem like fun, when in fact it's a complete pain in the butt? the eagerly awaited sequel to Car Tunes Volume 1 features more songs that tell the truth about cars. The 19 laugh-out-loud tracks include "If She Wasn't on Blocks", "Who Taught These Idiots to Drive?", "Built to Crash", "Unfit to Drive", and "Auto Mechanically Declined". The first Car Tunes collection was a smash hit. Why should this one be any different?
Customer Reviews:
Car Talk Tunes.......2007-05-26
We LOVE Car Talk and were hoping for a terrific CD. However, only a few of the songs were worth listening to. Other people may find the songs great, but they weren't for us. We listen to them in the car where we can punch in the numbers of the tunes we like.
Yet More of the Boys..........2007-02-03
These guys just don't know when to shut up.
But, if you love cars, you'll like this collection.
This set is quite distinguished. Here, we actually see their musical knowledge much in evidence, perhaps even more so than their sense of humor.
I enjoyed this one more for the music itself than for the jokes. If you like the jokes more, there are other CDs in their series you'd like better.
Keep it up, guys!

Excelent book in a Flash Line Story.......2006-06-04
In January I bought this book and it is simply astonishing!
It clarified me many doubts of the life of Wally but overalls of their fears and thoughts
For everybody who wants to know all for the fastest man alive
Highly recommended!.......2005-05-13
This graphic novel tells the story of Wally West, who first became Kid Flash, and the lessons he learned that would prepare him to one day take over the Flash mantle. Overall, I found this to be a very good graphic novel, and a worthy addition to my Flash library. It covers everything from Wally's transformation on, but not up to the death of Barry Allen.
The stories were uniformly great, and the illustration work was mostly great. The fly in the ointment is the Kid Flash: Day Two story, in which the people are drawn in a disturbingly caricature-like manner that really helps break down the believability.
But, that said, it is a very good Flash graphic-novel, one that I highly recommend!
The Slowest Read for the Fastest Man.......2004-01-11
Haven't we been here before? If you're not up on who the Flash is (Wally West's Flash) then it might be worth your time to pick this up. There's just no new ground covered here. It's a decent introduction to Wally, but nothing terribly interesting or groundbreaking.
wonderful read.......2001-07-03
This is a wonderful read, you start out with the Flash going ot his grandfathers place and while looking at his old pictres he thinks back to his first year as "Kid Flash". And that's where the story takes place, it shows you how he got his powers and his adventures with the Flash (then Barry Allen) facing people like mirror master. I just love this story because it's fun and you get a to see a New Barry Allen story and if your a fan you can't miss. A fun read tht has it's share of drama, if your a flash fan please get this book because you will love it like i do.
Fast and ligthing reading !.......2000-06-11
If you love Flash, you can't miss this saga. Almost everything you want to know about Wally West first years, as a Scarlet Speedster, is here. But the best part isn't past memories: you will finish it, and you wanna read more... it's seems a thunder can strike twice in the same place!

Hooked.......2007-01-04
I love this story, pitty she never continued the series. Have read it several times and am never disapointed.
Moral irresponsibility, whee!.......2004-02-01
The basic plot is, child prostitute who's seriously into unicorns meets nice wizard (in a bar); wizard gives her money, says "make your own magic," and stresses constantly that magic can't fix your problems; child prostitute is angst-ridden, shot at, and kidnapped for two-hundred-fifty pages; child prostitute is touched by her unicorn and suddenly her abusive parents are saints and everything's quite all right.
At once point, child prostitute's internal monologue explains that escapism is a myth and she reads fantasy to find *solutions*.
Hopefully child prostitute never reads this book.
(Oh, and there's also some stuff where evil elves make porn films by kidnapping other child prostitutes and taping monsters raping/eating them, if you're into that. We even get to sit in on a brainstorming session. And good elves playing with racecars, as usual.)
Good, but could have been better........2003-04-09
So far, this is my least favorite of the SERRAted Edge novels. The things that really carried the book were Sam, Tannim, and Keighvin: old cranky Irishman, modern mage, elf. Cranky Irishman, modern mages, and elves just about ALWAYS make a book good--and the ywork for this one. Definitely worth the read, if just to stare at elves, even if it's just in the imagination.
Not bad, but not for kids.......2001-05-12
I've always enjoyed Lackey's novels, but this one turned me off. The problem for me was the use of child (s)exploitation and snuff to establish the bad guys. While the "action" was not described explicitely, and no characters were actually mistreated in such a manner, Lackey didn't hesitate to describe what WOULD happen, including how it would be done (without being too explicit of course). The use of snuff and child exploitation as a plot device definately left me cold. Perhaps that was the intention. I felt it was out of place. Instead of making me agry at the antagonist, it made me angry at the author. It's one thing if it's social allegory. It's totally another when it's in a novel written for entertainment value, one that will probably be read by young teens (There's a nice letter to runaway children in the back suggesting places to go for help, but it still left me cold). If you think it won't bother you, go for it. It's not a bad story, and the bad guys get punished (for the most part). But be warned.
Brilliant concept but ..........2001-01-04
Brilliant concept, but Lackey pulls the same trick here that she does in many of her other novels -- lots and LOTS of exposition that ultimately slows down the plot. Pages and pages of descriptions of streets, of trees, of car racing engines, followed by chapter-long discussions between characters in which each quote is half a page long. Who really speaks like this? And who really wants to sit still and read that much overblown dialogue?
But when Lackey gets down to brass tacks, her action and magery sequences are edge-of-your-seat entertaining and absolutely top-notch. I just wish there were more of those and less talk.
If you liked this novel, you'll love "Chrome Circle," which follows Tannim in a life-or-death adventure Underhill. You'll probably also get a kick out of Lackey's Diana Tregarde novels, including "Children of the Night" and "Jinx High."

Someone Didn't Do Their Homework..........2006-12-10
I figured Hal Leonard Publishing; it would probabally be a decent book. But nope, it's page after page of no guitar tab. with only chord boxes and no suggestive strum pattern, it's like a lyric book.
