How can you possibly not own this book?.......2006-06-05
I find that it would be inpossible to play an instrument and have children, but not own this book. I used this book while I was learning to play piano growing up and just recently found it in an old box of books. This is an excellent compilation of Folk Songs!
Nostalgia Revisted.......2004-11-16
I love this book. I have had it forever. It sat on my grandparents piano when I went to visit my grandmother's house in the early 1970s. It sat on my parents piano when I was growing up. I managed to obtain a copy of the revised edition with guitar chords and it has not left my side. When I moved west and had to give up some of my music, I brought it and a binder of other music. At one point I ended up with both my parents tattered copy and my newer edition so I gave my tattered, well-loved copy to my sister.
Childhood sentiment.......2003-11-18
I got this book from my mother when I was 16, that's more than 40 years ago, and it has been with me and my children ever since. I played the songs on the piano, on the guitar, and with the accordion, and I know them all by heart, including the lively and colorful illustrations !
The arrangements are really good and easy to play.
Every year with Christmas I play the songs, and I wouldn't miss this book for the world. If you like singing and playing, order this book, you and your kids will love it !!
I love it........2002-05-13
I have had this book forever! I know almost every song in the book. I love the old pictures! The songs vary from old ballads like Barbra Allen to the American national anthem. I strongly recomend this book. It will always be part of my childhood memories.

Very accurate.......2007-02-03
Before I got into the music industry I read every book out there that had anything to do with the business. After years of working I realized only a select few of those many many books were accurate. This book, you can tell, is written by people who know the industry from an inside perspective. Most other books i've read are from authors who don't really have a clue other than what they've heard. This book is a testament to the "old industry" before Steve Jobs and MySpace hit the scene. It would probably find the authors well to update the book with more information about what's going on NOW. If your serious about managing someone's career in the music business I recommend three essential books: Record Label Marketing, The Future of Music, & Legal Aspects of the Music Industry.
One of the Best Books available.......2006-07-02
I got this book along with Artist Ceo: The Indie Record label guide at musicbrains.net and the Future of Music and found those books to be very complementary and productive.
Finally, a music marketing book you can use.......2006-05-22
I have been teaching music marketing for nearly a decade and until now I was never satisfied with the texts that were available. This book covers everything you need to know if you are going to do marketing in the industry. The overview of marketing gives the reader the basics and then Hutchison et al take you into just the right level of detail on how its done in the industry. With all the examples and illustrations it doesn't read like a text book. By the time you finish reading Record Label Marketing you'll be able to create your own marketing plan for your own CD.
Good.......2006-05-15
A nice guide containing most of the paperwork and examples needed for good management in the music industry. A nice structure and intuitive examples coupled with an understandable set of terms and overall language recommend this book for beginners and experts alike, this was almost number one until i discovered "101 Music Business Contracts" By Ty Cohen which really opened my eyes concerning some of the hidden aspects of the music industry, if you want the best book possible then Ty Cohen's is the best.

Excellent.......2006-05-20
Great, great great! That just sums all there is to be said about this book. With a step by step structure and structured reading this book takes you through the steps of recording, getting the album into the stores, booking concerts and managing the finances. Good title for managers and musicians alike, but songwriters and producers will love it too because ti opens up lots of closed doors and gives a lot of unseen information. Recommended for novices and experienced people alike, do not miss.
A Unique Understanding.......2001-09-15
Ms. Summers demonstrates a unique understanding of the inner-workings of the
music industry. Her insights are often pithy, helpful and even humorous. This
tome should be assigned reading for anyone wishing to make a career within
the oft-confusing walls of the contemporary music world.
So Helpful.......2001-09-15
I have own a marketing company in Portland, OR,and after "Almost Famous" came out I decided to branchout into the music business and have found everything Jodi has written to be so helpful.
Thank you

Entertaining and Interesting.......2001-08-07
It's obvious why Billboard Magazine gave Making and Marketing Music such a great review. It's full of interesting stories on how so many different platinum bands from so many areas of music succeeded.
If you're looking for step-by-step instruction on how to market and promote your album - this book is incredibly helpful!
Not the book you need.......2001-02-07
This is not so much a book... more a collection of magazine cuttings. There are far too many short stories about other bands, mainly used in my opinion as a name-dropping exercise. There is very little actual information of any practical value, other than a few obvious references to writing better songs and presenting them to the right people. There was no indication of how to write a better song, or who the right people are, or even how to go about finding them. So much for marketing information.
The writer goes on to explain that someone DID market their own album successfully. May as well have said that someone DID land on the moon, but no indication of HOW to go about preparing your music (or your spaceship) to do the same.
Very disappointing all round, or maybe my expectations were a little high, which is also possible, isn't it.

THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO GET YOUR SONGS RIGHT!.......2007-08-07
As a Billboard author of "The Musicians's Handbook: A Practical Giude to Understanding the Music Industry," an instructor at UCLA Music Business Extension and Musician's Institute, and a major label/indie recording artist, I highly recommend "The Craft and Business of Songwriting" to anyone that is serious about succeeding in the music industry. Remember: THE SONG COMES FIRST and this author wonderfully lays out the tools you need to get your songs right. Buy this book now!
Now I only write hit songs.......2007-07-31
Well, at least in my opinion.
I just received the book last night and have read about 1/4 of it. It's great so far, lot's of insight and information. After reading some of Mr. Braheny's info on his web site [...] I couldn't wait to get his book. It's more than I expected, including actual music theory but as it relates to hit songs, not just raw theory. Cool!
I'll write more after reading the entire book, but this is the best thing I've done for myself regarding song writing.
BTW, I also got Pat Pattison's book on lyric writing and barely looked at it - I don't think I'll care for it if I ever get around to reading it. I used to read Pattison's column in Home & Studio Recording mag, although I didn't recall it at the time I purchased his book, and I never cared for his column back then (in the '80s and '90s) either. Braheny's book is MUCH better - no comparison really.
Reviewing The Craft and Business .......2007-07-28
"The Craft and Business of Songwriting" has been instrumental in boosting my songwriting career by leaps and bounds. Even though I consider myself an "experienced" songwriter, there are so many things that "The Craft and Business of Songwriting" keeps me reminded and aware of. This book does that and more! It also helps me look at songwriting from a different and somewhat fresh perspective. I truly appreciate the insight on usage of the internet's many resources for marketing and promoting songwriting, which gives songwriters a perspective of the internet and web-based options to explore in helping to grow the songwriter's opportunities in cyberspace.
When it comes to songwriting, The Craft and Business of Songwriting is my bible.

The Book Of Choice.......2007-07-26
As a teacher of songwriting for over 15 years at Austin Community college,I have found John Braheny's book, "The Craft& Business of Song Writing",to be the best work of it's kind on the market today.
Students of songwriting in or out of school can find in this text invaluable information on every level of song production both subjective and objective. This book is a gem, both beautiful and practical!
Bravo John Braheny!

A must-have for songwriters!.......2007-05-18
An excellent, comprehensive work, which far exceeds all the other songwriting books I have purchased in both content and relevance. Newly updated to accommodate today's evolving market. An essential reference for all songwriters.
Book Description
The maxim in the music industry has always been "You can't make it on talent alone," and with This Business of Music Marketing & Promotion, you don't have to. In language that is simple and direct, author Tad Lathrop details promotional skills, publicity plans, royalty guidelines, and more, all supported by real-world examples. He shows how the Web and other technological developments have revolutionized not only how music is made, but how it is marketed and promoted. The old rules still apply--create a marketing plan, know your audience, be familiar with the laws of commerce--but there are a host of new ones as well, along with new strategies on how to give your recording the exposure it deserves. This streamlined, reorganized, and updated edition features an all-new chapter ("Twenty Profile-Building Ideas to Use Right Now"), which will help readers get a running start in the recording business. They'll also find completely updated material about Internet sales and promotion techniques, the latest information available on integrated marketing and e-marketing strategies, and brand-new listings of information resources.
Customer Reviews:
MUST READ!!!!.......2007-01-17
Great Book. Broken down in a way that allows the reader to disect the book and take notes like you were in school. Very thorough and indepth book. Organized wonderfully!!! A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WANTING A CAREER OF ANY KIND IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS!!!
RGEAT BOOK!!!!!!
I was less than satisfied.......2006-12-01
The book wasn't bad. It just didn't seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I'm just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that's the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.
There's some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn't already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman's book over this one - a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he's talking about.
Excellent.......2006-05-20
A very incisive title that bites right into the flesh of the problem. All the problems that matter are discussed here in this book and no stone is left unturned. Vivid examples and real life situations are used as cased studies and as examples on which fictional problems are projected and solved. This innovative way of detailing a complicated and cruel world has to be widely appreciated, along with the easy structure and understandable language. An overall excellent book with little or now flaws, a book that should be read by all that want to have anything to do with music promoting and marketing.
Good.......2006-05-19
There aren't a lot of eye openers when it comes to music business but this title is a revolution compared to titles of the same caliber. This book is one of those that make you stop and rethink what you've been thinking about a certain area of expertise, it really opens up some hidden pathways and certain secrets of the trade that have been hidden from outside view. Easy structure and good presentation draw the eye of the perspective buyer couple with some interesting testimonies from real life experiences.
Excellent read........2006-05-16
Even if you're a veteran in the industry, I highly suggest reading this book. Theres something to be learned for anyone who reads it. I bought it in hopes that it would cover the business of internet marketing, but it didn't do that as well as I would have hoped. Despite this fact, it is still a great book. If you're looking for internet help, check out "The New Music Industry: How to Use the Power of the Internet to Multiply Your Industry Exposure, Fan Base and Income Potential Online!" by Ty Cohen

Book Description
A creative juggernaut of the post-punk era, Factory Records was the catalyst behind the U.K. music explosion of the late '70s through the '90s with groups like Joy Division (soon to be the subject of an Anton Corbijn movie), New Order, and Happy Mondays leading the New Wave. At Factory, musicians and designers commingled creatively, with innovators such as Peter Saville, Den Kelly, Mark Farrow, 8VO, and Barbara Kruger elevating album covers to a new art form. The label broke further ground when it opened its own disco, the legendary Hacienda. Factory Records is the ultimate and only collection of Factory's complete graphic output, including every single piece it produced: extremely rare record sleeves, club flyers, and posters all gathered together for the first time. A must for collectors and enthusiasts, Matthew Robertson's meticulous compilation of underground ephemera is poised to introduce a new generation of music and design fans to the creative genius of Factory.

Factory.......2007-06-14
This is an excellent book for fans of Factory Records. Factory was label that always had beautiful graphic design work. The album covers and poster art were a showcase for the design work of Peter Saville. I highly recommend this thorough book to fans of the label.
A fine choice not just for contemporary music libraries but for art library holdings strong in graphic arts representations........2007-03-06
FACTORY RECORDS: THE COMPLETE GRAPHIC ALBUM could have been featured in our Music Shelf area but is profiled here for its artistic visual inspection of one British music label's eye-catching covers and productions. Notes for each production outline the varying graphic design choices which made the albums notable and different, making this a fine choice not just for contemporary music libraries but for art library holdings strong in graphic arts representations.
There's Only This..........2007-01-16
This is a magnificent time machine. There are a lot of labels people loved - Stiff, sst, etc. My favorite was Factory. With only a few exceptions, the music coming out on this label defined English music in the Eighties. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was unquestionably the song of the year in 1980 for instance. But what made the music even more evocative was the artwork along with it. The famous Joy Division covers, and the mighty "Power, Corruption, and Lies" are just a few examples. Thanks to New Order I learned who Fantin-Latour was, they skipped over him in my art history classes. I collected all the albums and 12 inch 45s. I especially liked A Certain Ratio, after I saw them at Danceteria in 1982 (I think that was the year). Where is the vinyl of yesteryear? The music is all on cd, but those tiny covers just dont do justice to the art. Here is all the glory in one beautiful package. If only I had made it to the Hacienda back in the day...
Beautiful .......2006-12-26
I just received this book for Christmas and I can't put it down. Even if you have a passing knowledge of the label and its artists you will enjoy this work. The mythology of the company and its catalog system is represented by stunning images and impeccable design. One strange thing stands out however, in my copy some of the captions are in French. This is a little annoying because I can't read French. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Customer Reviews:
If US is not your market - stay off this book.......2006-11-29
Ok so I received this book today. Boy what disappointment for me. This adress list is mainly towards american offices. This should have been stated in the AD somewhere. I am aiming for the european and asian market currently and beleived that in its 29th annual edition they would have been building adresses for other that US offices. There are some non-US adresses there, but just by an example; EMI ain't listed at all with any European adress (New York) and Air Chrysalis doesn't exist (well the latter may be gone anyways, I don't know). Deston Songs is non existent. And so the story goes.
If your market is mainly US this book might be great if its up to date (I don't know if it is.)
If your market currently is non-US; stay away from this book. There are other sources out there for that that is better. Online sources like [...] and such.
When that is said, the book also includes some articles about remixes, contract, lawyers and more that I found to be a good read.
Good, but needs a bit of improvement.......2006-02-27
I thought this book was good. I it gives you information, but I expected it to have even more. But it is still good, don't get me wrong.
YOUR GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED.......2006-02-17
This book, is a valuable tool in aiding anyone who has ever sought to get their songs published. It has loads of contact names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, and other contact information for music publishers in the usa and around the world. And whatever you do, don't give up!!! And never take the word of a select few people as to your song's worth. There is a term in sales called "regional sales". In other words, what some people in certain parts of the world may think stinks, other people might go nuts over it!!! I cannot count on my fingers how many times I've heard of perfectly good musicians give up on writing, simply because they listened to their "friends" opinions, or got bad reviews in their home town. what anyone must realize when it comes to being an artist (music or otherwise) is that you are going to make someone jealous. And some will show it out front, and others will hide it behind a sincere looking, sometimes teary eyes appearance. And it is these people who do all they can to see you not succeed, sometimes even long time friends or family. I know, it has happened to me.
and I've seen people who, when they played their music in my area were literally booed. but kind of funny when they went to other parts of the country, they got rave reviews...interesting isn't it?
You might have a rap song and try it out in alabama and get run out of town, or a country song in boston and have them throw rocks at you. Then that same rap artist COULD go to Los Angeles and within minutes have 500,000 people begging for their autograph, and the country songwriter could go to Texas and have record producers lined up out the door...Get the picture?
this guide is published by folks who've been in the business for many many many years. They have a superb reputation, and so do most of the advertisers in the guide. And if (and it rarely happens) they find a dishonest music publisher, they boot them out of the next guide. I've been published and P-A-I-D for it, and YOU can do the same. Get inspired, quit listening to that negative voice inside you saying "you'll never make it, no one will like that stuff, It stinks", and GO FOR IT!!! You will never know if you have what it takes until you try. YOU WILL NEVER EVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY. AND IT DONT MATTER IF IT'S RAP ROCK GOSPEL COUNTRY RAGGAE OR A NEW MUSIC THAT DONT FIT INTO ANY ONE CATEGORY, YOU HAVE TO TRY!!!. It don't matter if you are dirt poor, or wealthier than your dog's cat, PUT IT OUT!!!!! It don't matter if you're a man or woman, a boy or girl, it don't matter your religion or where you come from, ANYONE can have their music published. SO GET AT IT AND GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!

Poignant but Wordy.......2007-09-02
Following in the footsteps of the other amazing 'This Business Of...' series of music business based books, this one doesn't disappoint. However, it's a bit wordier than the rest of them; the information is dead on and extremely helpful, but you just have to prepare yourself for the task at hand (which would be: making sense of all of it as you read.) Before you go and buy this book though, make sure you've read Tad's previous 'This Business of...' novel: 'This Business of Music Marketing and Promotion'.
