somebody's slipping..........2007-09-30
Sigh...it seems like all my favorite authors are slipping these days. I found her newest book to be slow and boring....the first one hundred pages is a baby shower (completely unrelated to the plot), a wedding that comes out of nowhere and seems to be going back to the same place, and contrived daliance in the bar with Bills new honey, some clothes shopping...it's all a day in the life and not well done, either. The meat of the plot, if you'll call it that, was lame and contrived and I sat through most of it saying "Don't you SEE! OMG, after 9/11 anyone in their right mind can see where the bombs are!" You don't have to be a frelling psychic! I won't say it was BAD, because even though boring, it was well written, but it sure wasn't good. If I'd actually paid money for this book, though, instead of hitting up the budget of my friendly neighborhood library I'd have been pretty ticked.
All Together Dead.......2007-09-28
Book 7 of the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris brings telepathic cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse to a vampire 'town meeting' that yields a tasty trial, romantic intrigue and radical-right anti-vamp attack. Oh, and Sookie is still surrounded by former or would-be lovers who want to make love, drink her blood, use her psychic gifts, or all of the above. Harris has crafted a character, a town, a world that her fans can't get enough of. Personally, I'd like to see her move a little faster on the 'Eric' front, but hey....choosing between a gladiator/ were-tiger and a thousand-year old Viking can't be easy! This isn't the best of the series, but it's a trueblood treat for those of us who love Sookie's Lopsided Louisiana otherworld.
I liked it as a "light read" but still feel the lack of quality.......2007-09-24
Harris' main strengths are characterization, tone, and emotional content. Plot construction and pacing are her weaknesses. But that's okay, she's still a good storyteller and I like her books.
After reading several reviews at Amazon, I read "All Together Dead" with low expectations and maybe that's why I was pleasantly surprised. Plot and pacing are still "off" but they always have been.
The Sookie/Quinn romance doesn't "ring true" to me. Quinn remains too much an archtype for me to view him as a real personality. He seems more like an appendage to Sookie then anything else.
Also, why is it that Harris always resorts to Sookie's love interests/male friends usually being out of pocket when she's in a sticky situation?
There's lots of interesting subplots going on but the main action supposedly focuses on a vampire convention and the Queen's trial. After quite a lot of buildup, the trial is over and done with.
There is a surprising murder occuring near the end of the book that seems both out of character and unnecessary.
The continued tension and interest between Sookie and Eric is growing more interesting but again, I felt a bit let down in how their intimacy was forced. I suspect Sookie is some reincarnated former love of Eric's or something like that. Whether they're in love in this lifetime or not isn't the point. He's shown genuine affection and concern for her and I felt the "blood rape" was a cheap shot.
Like other reviewers, I agree this is a "filler" story and I hope we can look forward to more interesting happenings in future stories.

Can't wait for another - I love her books and this one does not disappoint.
Hurray for Ms Harris!.......2007-09-17
Ms Harris,
Eating and Sleeping are over-rated.
Writing is what is important.
So, if you wouldn't mind, give up your free-time, sleeping and eating - and get the next book finished!!
Can't wait!
PS
You're killing me making Eric second string. I know there is a hidden story there.

Customer Reviews:
definately dead.......2007-09-12
Definitely dead does not describe her books! Try laugh out loud fun, sex, humor and surprise as elements that makes Charlaine Harris one of my favorites in the chick lit fantasy and supernatural realm.
Sookie.......2007-08-27
If you are already a Sookie and Bill fan, this book will blow you away! It is fast paced, and you see a side of Sookie and a side of Bill you would never believe. If you are new to the Southern Vampire series, you definitely need to start with "Dead Until Dark." Ms. Harris has such a way of pulling you into the world of the supernatural, you don't realize you have left the "real world." Believable characters are what makes this series one that you will want to read over and over again. I cannot wait to see what Sookie and her friends have gotten themselves into next.
THE BEST!.......2007-08-23
OMG! I can't wait until the next in the series comes out! I love them all!! Sookie is the best!
DEFINITELY READ THIS!!!!.......2007-08-19
In another delightful Sookie whodunit, Sookie is given the sad news that cousin Hadley, also a member of the undead, has actually died again (permanently) in New Orleans. Being the only heir, Sookie realizes that she has to go to New Orleans and clean out her cousin's apartment. Sookie soon finds out that Hadley was actually the consort of the Queen of New Orleans--who is soon set to marry.
It doesn't take Sookie long to discover that her cousin had a lot of secrets--hiding, literally, in closets and other places. But there is someone lurking who would rather that Hadley's secrets stay just that--secret. In addition to the mysteries concerning her cousin, there are revelations regarding Sookie's own personal life. And could there be a new romantic interest?
In another installment sure to keep readers turning the pages, this is another delightful paranormal whodunit from the author of this wonderful genre mix.

Sookie's Backkkkkk.......2007-07-27
Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid and telepath, is back in this sixth installment of the Southern Vampire Mysteries, and things are, as usual, tense in Sookie's corner of the world. Contacted by Louisiana's vampire queen, Sookie discovers that her estranged cousin, Hadley, has been murdered and Sookie needs to come to New Orleans to deal with her estate. Of course, this is Sookie Stackhouse we're discussing, so things are not as simple as they seem. Add in some demons, the vampire king of Arkansas (why does that make me laugh?), weres of every shape and size, witches, fairies, Sookie' regular stable of friends and acquaintances, and the three hot guys currently vying for her affections, and we've got a standard, fun-filled addition to the series.
Definitely Dead is definitely delightful; Sookie discovers some things about herself and her family tree, and she assists in locating a missing child, thus putting her skills as a telepath to use in an arena besides the magical world. Upon reflection, however, I'm still not sure why that episode was added, though it was interesting. Otherwise, the action is almost non-stop, and Sookie once again is in mortal danger more than once. She's begun a new relationship with Quinn, the sexy weretiger, but she finds out devastating information about Bill, her former vampire lover. What's a telepath to do?
This is a worthy installment in this laugh out loud, engaging series, if a few minor questions still need answering. Sookie is managing herself well, and the set-up is there for the next book when Sookie will be accompanying the queen to a conference. Personally, I miss Sookie's sexy relationship with Eric, and hope to see more of him in book 7. Light reading but fun, this one's just left me wanting more.

The USA Today Bestselling Author's new Dresden Files novel...finally in paperback-and soon to be a Sci Fi Channel movie!
Filled with kickass adventure and supernatural fireworks, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files novels have been compared to Harry Potter. Now, Harry Dresden must save Chicago from black magic and necromancy-all in a day's work for the city's only professional wizard.
Customer Reviews:
What a ride!.......2007-09-24
I have only read "Storm Front" before this. I liked it better. There are so many villians in this book and Harry is threatened in so many ways and injured in so many ways, it almost becomes laughable. The ending is good and exciting, even though I knew pretty much what was coming about chapter 3. The book is starting to have the "Da Vinci Code" syndrome: a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter. He is not as bad as Brown yet, but he is definitely headed in that direction. The friendship of Harry and Butters is pretty cool. The magic becomes convenient for plot devices. The humor is still there in spots.
The series is good. I was just slightly disappointed in this one.
Days of the Dead.......2007-09-14
Dead Beat (2005) is the seventh urban fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Blood Rites. In the previous volume, Harry burned his hand rescuing children from the Black Court vampires. He also discovered that paintball guns work well against the Black Court when loaded with holy water.
Lara Raith discovered the results of the curse on her father and Thomas learned that Justine is not dead. Jake decided to go into Feng Shui consulting while he took care of Emma's kids. Harry named the puppy "Mouse" and wondered why Thomas had bought large breed Puppy Chow.
In this novel, Thomas is living with Harry in the basement apartment. Thomas is frustrated because he cannot find a permanent job and Harry is frustrated because he cannot find a permanent girlfriend. Mister and Mouse are frustrated because they don't get fed on time and they are both oversized enough to really need the food.
It doesn't help that Thomas has women coming into the apartment when he should be running errands for his brother. Maybe Thomas and his lovers have a great time, but they do trash the place. Even the books are pulled out and scattered on the floor. And Thomas doesn't clean up behind himself.
After Thomas bares his soul and leaves in a huff, Harry takes Mouse out for a walk and Murphy pulls up just as he returns. Karrin is going on a vacation -- the first one in forever -- to Hawaii with Kincaid and wants Harry to water her plants. Harry tries to talk her out of doing anything with Kincaid, but doesn't try that hard since Karrin is not his girlfriend. Later, he wonders if Murphy had wanted him to try a little harder.
After pocketing the keys to her house, Harry goes inside the apartment and heats up some soup. Sitting down to eat, Harry checks his mail and finds one envelope with only his name and address on it. He checks it out for magical spells and, finding nothing harmful, opens it and slides out two photos and a note.
The photos show Murphy blasting some vampire minions with a shotgun. Harry knows that the public will only see human shaped bodies in the photos. The note threatens to send copies to Murphy's bosses if Harry doesn't appear at a specified time and place. The note offers a truce for the parley and is signed "Mavra". Dresden has little choice in the matter.
At the meeting, Mavra demands that Harry find a book -- The Word of Kemmler -- or the photos get mailed. Mavra has also taken precautions to ensure that the photos will be mailed if Harry destroys her. Harry still doesn't see any way out of this mess.
In this story, Harry gradually finds out more about Kemmler and his books -- at least two earlier works had been self-published -- and he soon discovers that Kemmler had been the most dangerous necromancer suppressed by the White Council. They had finally terminated Kemmler himself and several apprentices, but they hadn't gotten them all. Now the last work of Kemmler has suddenly reappeared and Harry soon runs into three separate necromancers looking for the book.
The first necromancer encountered is Grevane, who raids the Forensic Institute -- commonly called the morgue -- looking for something. The security guard is the first through the door into the examining room, his throat cut from ear to ear. Then Grevane and two other zombies enter and face Butters, the medical examiner. Harry intervenes to save Butters and they barely escape from the dead men. Harry takes Butters home to his warded apartment.
Later, Harry meets Shiela -- a clerk at Bock Ordered Books -- and buys a copy of a rare book that he needs for his research. When he steps out of the bookstore, two hooded figures are waiting for him. They both know who he is, but the taller one introduces himself as Cowl and calls the shorter one Kumori. Dresden drops a Toyota on Cowl, but only the local pack of werewolves saves him from the more powerful wizard.
When he later returns to the bookstore, the front windows have been replaced with plywood. Bock asks him to never return, but Shiela asks him for a date. Then the third necromancer -- Corpsetaker -- comes into the store asking about the buyer of the rare book and Harry steps out to confront her. She almost snares him with her mind magic, but he gets away with a little help from John Marcone.
This story has Harry facing three necromancers who are each much stronger than him. Moreover, he doesn't know what they want and how they expect to get it. Obviously, The Word of Kemmler is important, but so is the other book. He desperately needs more information.
Harry spends some time explaining the facts of the preternatural world to Butters. At first, Butters is skeptical, but too much is happening around him to deny the facts. Harry also divulges various White Council secrets and even shows Butters how to power a magical circle.
Harry also has several frank discussions with the shadow of Lasciel dwelling within his mind. Naturally, Dresden knows that the fallen angel is trying to seduce him to the dark side, but she is so convincing. He is definitely NOT going to dig up the blackened denarius in the cellar, but maybe they can work out a compromise to help protect his friends and neighbors.
Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical powers, dinosaur skeletons, and other exotica.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Wild Ride.......2007-08-06
This is a great story. I especially like the character Butters in this book, as he is really just an average guy, and he finds out some stuff about himself. All the Dresden File books are exciting, and the ending to this one is literally a really wild ride. Anyone who likes action with a sense of humor will really enjoy these stories.
Details, details.......2007-08-04
I am giving this five stars, because as books go, it deserves it, but it is not the best Harry Dresden novel. Others reviewers have addressed major aspects of this book. It is definitely an action packed book with interesting characters and an exciting plot. I wanted to address some fine points that often go unappreciated in books.
Firstly, Jim Butcher is very good with unifying a plot. A "dream" (or possibly magical encounter) occurs early in the book. It seems the only point of it is an excuse for a very elaborate pun. (Which you would not get if you were not familiar with "Jaberwocky.") However, this sets up two later scenes. One is a reference to the thing that is punned upon and the other is scene where Harry is comforted about the possible repercussions of a death curse. This is just a minor example of the kind of unity that Jim Butcher is capable of. Most published authors get the major things right. Jim Butcher is also good with the details.
Secondly, this novel creates some beautiful visual images. Like many people, I started reading the Harry Dresden novels after seeing the TV series. The TV series is good, but it is really a different world. But I defy anyone to read the action packed battle at the end without "seeing" incredible visual images. The ScFi channel doesn't have the budget to do what the novel does.
An excellent book.......2007-08-03
Wow this is one of the best of a great series by Jim Butcher. In this book not only does Harry's character grow and becomes more interesting the character Waldo Butters grows tremendously as well. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading.

Book Description
From America's # 1 bestselling crime writer comes the extraordinary new Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel.
The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, a ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to take on a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace, not only personally and professionally but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsy services to communities lacking local access to modern, competent death investigation technology.
It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run Scarpetta out of town. And that's before the murders and other violent deaths even begin.
A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home. The body of an abused young boy is discovered dumped in a desolate marsh. Meanwhile, in distant New England, problems with a prominent patient at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital begin to hint at interconnections that are as hard to imagine as they are horrible.
Kay Scarpetta has dealt with many brutal and unusual crimes before, but never a string of them as baffling, or as terrifying, as the ones confronting her now. Before she is through, that book of the dead will contain many names-and the pen may be poised to write in her own.
The first name in forensics. The last name in suspense. Once again, Patricia Cornwell proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

Customer Reviews:
Sex, suspense and supernatural.......2007-09-12
I just started reading Kim Harrison so I've been reading her out of chronological order. Talk about lots of fun! She makes it easy to be a supernatural fan. lots of adventure and sex spice up her book...I wish she could write faster.
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
More demonic dirty deeds are to be seen here. Rachel encounters one of her demon's past slaves, and it turns out she is an elf. Suddenly there are elves everywhere, ex demon-slaves are elves, the super villain and annoying henchmen are elves. These guys are supposed to be gone, what is the story, etc.
Mysterious elderly next door neighbour, as well.
With arguments with her boyfriend, and the amusing pixie going on, this perhaps runs the risk of turning into a crazed supernatural fest, with no human characters left, despite their overwhelming majority numbers in the city.
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-08-20
I'm new to this series, but have been tearing through them! I'll always be a fan of Anita Blake, but this world has even more types of characters and the plot hasn't deviated into the relationship-only type yet. I'm already halfway through the next one!
What a witch!.......2007-08-04
OK, so since reading the first of the Rachel Morgan series, I have grown to love getting the next in the chain. Every time I dive into the pages and submerge into the world that Kim Harrison so eloquently portrays, I feel a part of the story. Her extraordinary gift is making such fantasy feel whole, real and totally believable.
This to me was the failing of others like buffy, which always felt unreal. Rachel is sassy, and knows what real life is, and to me they should put these into film ASAP!
Book 3 Rachel starts to think she can start getting her life in order, but as always things never quite go to plan. Living with a family of Pixies, a living vampire and having your boyfriend as a familiar would suggest 'normality' is a dream that will never come true, but lets hope Rachel can do it.
If you are looking to drop out of the hum-drum and into a complex and real fantasy world, with adult emotions shown with grit and feeling, these are the books for you, and book 3 is even better!
The Life of a Demon Familiar.......2007-07-17
Every Which Way But Dead (2005) is the third Urban Fantasy in the Rachel Morgan series, following The Good, the Bad, and the Undead. In the previous volume, Rachel slams Piscary into unconsciousness and turns him over to the FIBs. Later she convinces the Howlers to pay her fee for searching for their mascot fish.
In this novel, Piscary is convicted for the murders of several ley line witches after the demon Algaliarept testifies against him. Now Rachel summons the demon to fulfill her promise in exchange for his testimony. She goes through the rites to become his familiar.
After accepting her service, Al no longer needs his former familiar, the elf Ceri. Despite his sadistic intentions, Rachel convinces Al to release Ceri and then she gets Ceri onto sanctified ground. Ceri is now free after a thousand years of service to the demon.
Although Ceri is rapidly adjusting to her new freedom, Rachel needs to find her another home. Jenks is frustrated because he can't tell what kind of creature she is. He knows that she is the same kind as Trent Kalamack, but Rachel prefers not to release that information and pixies are not known for keeping secrets. Besides, Rachel, Ivy and Jenks are not exactly a normal household living in a typical lifestyle.
Rachel invites Keasley, the old witch living across the street, to come over and meet Ceri. While Keasley is not exactly a typical inderlander himself, he is more so than the Vampiric Charms team. At first Ceri and Keasley are a bit reluctant, but soon find much to like in each other. Keasley returns home to install Ceri in his spare bedroom.
In this story, Rachel notices that an older Were has been following her and confronts him in a back corner of the zoo. David Hue is an insurance adjuster who has a few questions about the fish that Rachel had taken from Mr. Ray's office. It seems that the fish had been stolen and the original owner has filed a claim. He also has some papers for Rachel to sign concerning the final disposition of the fish.
Algaliarept cannot use Rachel as his familiar without taking her back to the ever-after and is less than happy about her refusal to cross over. One day, when Rachel uses the ley line in her back yard, Al unexpectedly appears and starts dragging her away. Since the backyard ley line is surrounded by sanctified ground, the nearest available ley line is eight blocks away and Al is determined to drag or carry her to it. But Ceri, Keasley and David form a circle to stop him and Rachel, as the de facto summoner, then banishes him back to the ever-after.
This story also tells of Rachel's troubled relationship with Nick Sparagmos. After he became her familiar, Nick was subject to seizures and other upsets whenever Rachel drew upon a ley line. Now that she is Algaliarept's familiar, that tie has been broken, but Nick still isn't returning home. Then Kristen takes her out on a date and she finds herself becoming more attracted toward him.
With Piscary in prison, the criminal underground in Cincinnati becomes more unstable. Rachel gradually becomes aware of a new player. She first learns of Stanley Saladan from Takata in regard to his annual concert. Then Kristen takes her to Lee Saladan's gambling boat. Later, Quen hires her to protect Trent during a meeting with Saladan.
As usual, Rachel gets into all kinds of trouble with both her friends and her enemies. Sometimes it is hard to tell one from another, since today's friend is tomorrow's enemy and vice-versa. Her life is so screwed up!
Highly recommended for Harrison fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of inderlanders, humans and romance.

Customer Reviews:
More than a museum thriller!.......2007-10-03
Another action filled adventure with the strange but compelling Agent Pendergast at the center of it all. The authors keep your attention rivited as the characters weave in and out of the main story line. The descriptive narrative keeps you looking over the shoulder of each person while you hold your breath at the suspense when the evil Diogenes is at his worst and you are waiting for the brilliant Aloysius to save Constance. Loved having D'Agosta back in the middle of it all!
Starts out strong, fizzles at the end.......2007-09-27
As David Spade would say, I like this book better the first time I read it, when it was called "Relic." Preston and Child can turn out potboilers, guilty pleasures that aren't literary masterpieces but make with the page-turning fun, but they also aren't without their flaws. Too often, they drop arcana into a situation that doesn't call for it (anybody can Google up a ton of trivia on any subject, and besides, you shouldn't try to impress your reader by your mastery of obscure facts). Agent Pendergast is again perfect in every way. Need a safe cracked? He knows the metallurgy necessary to pick the weak point in the lock. Not to give away a plot point, but in this book he McGuyvers up one particularly necessary element in a manner that's just too convenient.
And convenience is the downfall of this book, and of most P&C books. What could be a situation fraught with drama is instead defused by Pendergast's godlike abilities, including the ludicrous "memory crossing" technique that is P&C's way of conveniently explaining away anything they don't know how to write into their books.
Chop off a few chapters, give Pendergast at least one or two flaws, and drop the attempts to dazzle the reader with trivia, and this would be a five-star summer read. As it is, it's just laughable and tedious.
Best thriller / Detective novels in the past 20 years.......2007-09-26
New to the Preston/Child series of novels, I started with Brimstone, then Dance of Death and then the finale, Book of the Dead. The "Diogenes" trilogy.
Extremely well written, and eloquently poised, the imagery and characterizations blend to create the perfect thriller. Preston and Child contribute the perfect combination of talent, to be indistinguishable as more than one author.
Agent Pendergast and the collaborating cast of characters are so real, so carefully created, that they bring to life the story, and draw you into the reality of the novels. The obviously well documented, and researched background information gives a vivid backdrop to the plot and your imagination builds the elaborate scenes for every location.
I will be buying more of the authors' past books and will be eagerly anticipating more of the Pendergast saga as it unfolds.
HIGHLY recommended reading, you won't be disappointed. A thinking man's thriller.
Good book..........2007-09-21
The Book of the Dead was a good book, it was slow up until about the middle.. then it became a page turner. I hadn't read the previous two books in the trilogy, and after reading this one, which most people say is the best, i dont think i'll waste my time on them. All in all this was a good book, but not a great one.
Wow - Truly a GREAT Read!.......2007-09-16
Masterful - I don't know what more to say. This is the third book of a trilogy involving agent Pendergast and I think the 7th book in total - in which he has been a main character. Excepting, Still Life With Crows (which I didnt like), I have read and re-read each and every one of these. Preston and Douglas have honed their storytelling skills and are able to provide some incredible reads. This is clearly one of them.

Book Description
Claire has her share of challenges. Like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains; homicidal girls in her dorm, and finding out that her college town is overrun with the living dead. On the up side, she has a new boyfriend with a vampire-hunting dad. But when a local fraternity throws the Dead Girls' Dance, hell is really going to break loose.
Customer Reviews:
NOT MUCH OF A DANCE.......2007-10-05
I did enjoy reading it; however it did not live up to the 1st book. The character development is interesting though. Feels like it's slightly unfinished. Not a stand alone book-read book 1 first.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-06-15
I was lucky enough to pick this up just days after I'd read Glass Houses and had cooled off from facing the unwelcome cliffhanger that topped off what was otherwise a terrific book. As the other reviewers say, this picks up moments later and the action is non-stop until the end -- where we get another cliffhanger, though not QUITE as traumatic. I mean, this one you have to think about for the full scope of the potential trauma to set in.
The characters are getting more dimensional and interesting and the worldbuilding shows how intricate it is, hiding so many mysteries that we want to investigate. I don't usually like vampire novels, but this series has lots of original ideas in it -- and its characters carry them to even higher levels. The cliffhangers are frustrating, but I'm currently writing a series that has its own set so I guess I should welcome this as setting a precedent. Be assured that the basic plot of the book is complete within it; you won't be dissatisfied.
You'll also get some really good scares. Have fun reading it! (And Rachel Caine: WRITE FASTER!!!)
5 stars.......2007-06-12
Picking up right where Glass Houses ended, the story of Claire, Shane, Michael, and Eve not only continues, but turns up the volume and intensity. A cold war, cold as only vampires could make it, has been declared now that Shane's father and his vampire hunters have arrived. When one of the "leading citizens" among the undead is killed, Shane is implicated and his life forfeit unless his three friends can do something to stop it. Even those who claim to know he is innocent refuse to help, and so, Claire and Eve are forced to take desperate risks to save him. None of them could have foreseen the terrible prices that will have to be paid for the sake of love.
***** Book one in this series left me emotionally spent, in a good way. The intensity is cubed in this latest entry. It was hard to put this down for even the slightest break and, forget what happens to the kid with the scar and glasses, I want to know what happens next in Morganville. If you love to read about characters with whom you can get deeply involved, Rachel Caine is so far a one hundred percent sure bet to satisfy that need. I love her Weather Warden stories, and her vampires are even better. *****

Much better then Glass Houses.......2007-06-06
I just recently finished this book and I definitely enjoyed it a lot more then Glass Houses. I sped through GH and didn't take it all in and on a second reading I was kind of disappointed (I would rate it 3 stars). But Dead Girls' Dance is a LOT better.
The story isn't as crazy this time around, all the introduction of the characters and the town is over and done with so you can now concentrate on the story itself which is turning out to be interesting.
I felt Glass Houses was a bit rushed, like Rachel tried to fit in too much stuff into the book. This one is much more even. The story is non-stop as it usually is in all of Rachel's book, but it doesn't feel rushed or overdone.
This book is short, but it squeezes a lot in - deaths, vampires, a crazy party and even a bit of romance. I'm glad Claire and Shane got together even though he still thinks Claire is a little bit too young for him.
When I finished Glass Houses I wasn't so enthused to read Dead Girls' Dance as I didn't enjoy the 1st book but I'm glad I read it now as it's a LOT better.
This book ain't no Weather Warden book (Rachel's other series, one of the best book series ever written), but it's still loads of good fun and a great quick read. I'm looking forward to the 3rd book, released in October. 4 stars.
4.5 stars. Leaves a lot of threads dangling........2007-05-22
Claire Danvers is a genius. She thinks studying and learning are fun. Since she is only sixteen, her parents will not allow her to attend college far away. They want to be able to drive up anytime they believe Claire needs them. Therefore, Claire attends Texas Prairie University (TPU). Due to problems with the previous dorm's popular girl, Monica Morrell, trying to kill her, Claire lives off campus at Glass House with three other house mates.
Claire is only now getting used to knowing that vampires rule the town and the local humans are pledged to certain vampires as life-long servants and blood donors. Anyone without a bracelet showing that he has Protection is nothing more than meat if he roams the streets after dark. It is a little more tolerable, thanks to her roommates. Eve has become Claire's best friend. Shane has become Claire's boyfriend. David is still strange, even though Claire now understands why David is never seen during the day. No, David is not a vampire, but that would be a blessing compared to what he is now.
Now a fraternity is throwing its annual Dead Girls' Dance. Amazingly, Claire and Eve have been invited. They have no idea WHY they were issued the invitation though. Since Claire is so young, she would have declined, except that Shane's father, along with a gang of bikers, are on a vendetta to kill all vampires. If humans get in the way, that's just too bad.
***** This book picks up EXACTLY where the first left off. If you have not read book one (Glass Houses), then you will find yourself lost a few times. Thankfully, this time the story does not end in the middle of something horrible, like a murder. It does, however, leave many threads dangling. I am still confused on when Claire's two days dead line got extended by her parents. Did the author forget about it? Loop hole? Who knows? Hopefully, the dead line will be explained in the third novel (Midnight Alley), due for release October 2007. Teens and Young Adults will not be the only ones to be enthralled by this series. If you like vampires, this is for you! *****

Ender Wiggin, the hero and scapegoat of mass alien destruction in Ender's Game, receives a chance at redemption in this novel. Ender, who proclaimed as a mistake his success in wiping out an alien race, wins the opportunity to cope better with a second race, discovered by Portuguese colonists on the planet Lusitania. Orson Scott Card infuses this long, ambitious tale with intellect by casting his characters in social, religious and cultural contexts. Like its predecessor, this book won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
Book Description
In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening....again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery....and the truth.
Customer Reviews:
A Curious Award Winner that is Politically Incorrect.......2007-10-02
Why Politically Incorrect? Mr. Card's work ends with the piggies firmly choosing to accept the benefits of a technologically superior culture. Freedom of choice is good, according to western standards. However, every choice has a dark side, and, in our modern world, when cultures meet, often the "less advanced" culture has been severely tainted, or even destroyed, regardless of the benign intentions of the "more advanced" culture. As a result, there never is truly a freedom of choice for such people, and modern societies are held responsible for the destruction of indigienous cultures, regardless of their good intentions.
To say that the piggies "freely" chose to pursue the technology and culture that Andrew Wiggins offered is an impossibility. They had no free choice since they could not fully understand the consequences of their actions.
As a result, if anyone other than Mr Card had written this book (with his extensive writing and humanitarian credentails), I cannot help but wonder how this book would have been received.
Funny how much people hate books that actually make them think.......2007-09-08
This isn't really sci-fi for Star Wars fans, especially the way Ender's Game was. It doesn't surprise me that Orson Scott Card's (OSC) LDS mission was in Brazil, since the characters speak Portuguese and this book contains historical references to Brazilian history. What I found the most far fetched, and didn't like about this book was the Christian banter. Will the human race still have arguments over who's right about god that far into the future? I think I'll vomit now.
In this story, Ender has an absurd amount of money that will magically buy him anything he wants. There is another interesting character in the book, who solves Ender's problems too easily. Where's the challenge? A little too American-Disney style magically making life a little too easy. In plain English, you don't get the idea that Ender has any new life lessons to learn. Fortunately, there are several other characters in this book who do.
On a philosophical level, I really enjoyed this novel. I even emailed a philosophy prof from back in the day to ask him if he'd read any OSC, which he had, although he didn't recognize the title of this book. If you have an open mind and enjoy books that make you think, I think it's worth checking out. I'm looking forward to OSC's prequel to this, that's supposedly being written. It will also be interesting to see how Ender's Game turns out as a film in 08, but I can't imagine this story as a film...unless Martin Scorcese directs it.
Not to be associated with the others........2007-08-15
Some fans have been disenchanted with the rest of the Ender series past the first book, but I would caution them not to lump this book in with the later ones simply because it shares a setting and a set of concerns. This one shines.
This is the book Card actually had wanted to write for a long time-- the later ones were written because of his publisher's contract, and Ender's Game helped him finally establish a base from which to write Speaker for the Dead. I can understand why he'd always wanted to write this book: what is in it is beautiful and true. I couldn't and wouldn't say that for any of his books that followed, but this one deserves consideration independent of what you think of the rest of the series.
A philosophical tale, and best sequel ever in Sci.Fi!.......2007-06-30
Continuing from the great work in Enders game, Card completely changes path with his writings in Speaker for the Dead. The story is philosophical, the conversations are almost like essays, and Card really makes you wonder as the reader about fundamental issues in human nature, and in how society has evolved. Card uses cunning wit to deliver his punchline, and you are really left wondering if not all conflicts, all wars, genicides and racial conflicts through the ages are due to a fundamental inherent (dis)ability in man to trust anyone that is slightly different from himself. Secondly, Card creates the concept of a speaker for the dead, which is almost religious in its proportions and is a brilliant concept. Ender is becoming the savior of mankind but without the ability to save himself. Brilliant work, and best sequel ever in Sci.Fi
Sequel or Sell out?.......2007-06-28
This book is loosely connected to Ender's Game. Very loosely. Ender is now something like 20 years older and 3,000 years in the future and he's out of the military. If you expect war tactics like Ender's Game, well then, surprise... they are very, very remotely connected.
At the end of Ender's Game, Ender became a speaker for the dead. Sounded like a cop-out for a sure-fire sequel. Tah-dah! Here it is, he is THE speaker for the dead. The beautiful love he shared with his sister is in this book... for about 40 pages. Most of this book has nothing to do with Ender's Game other than ender being named "Speaker of the Dead." It could have been any speaker of the dead, as a matter of fact. Loose connection.
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the xenology of the Piggies, the fauna and the other wildlife. The ideas, descriptions, and follow-through were all excellent. I believe this was the central idea behind the entire book, itself! The author just tacked it on as the sequel to Ender's Game and WHAM!... instant best seller.
Humanism & it's responsibility plays a touching factor when dealing with an ignorant, uninformed, primative alien species. Here, you can observe human behavior when confronted with the possibilty of fulfilling selfish goals on a distant planet; like preaching and converting the aliens.
Great book... bad connection to Ender's Game.

Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana, but she keeps to herself and doesn't date much because of her "disability" to read minds. When she meets Bill, Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's the type of guy she's waited for all of her life, but he has a disability, too--he's a vampire with a bad reputation. Customer Reviews:
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.......2007-09-25
I went into this novel with very low expectations, and as such, it exceeded them. It isn't Pulitzer Prize winning material; but, it's a fast, fun read.
Ms. Harris is a seasoned mystery writer; but when her more mainstream novels didn't sell as well as she would have liked, she decided to write a more profitable series; namely, one that could be marketed as fantasy and/or horror. She took what she knew and threw in a telepathic waitress, a humanistic vampire and a charmingly modest shape shifter. That may not sound like a recipe for success; but, Harris managed to pull it off - with only a few minor mechanical flaws.
Sookie, in blatant contrast to her genre equivalents - cynical, hardened, magic wielding detectives - is rather quiet and almost painfully naive. Though her voice is mostly entertaining, she sometimes slips into the vocabulary and cadence of a woman Charlaine Harris' age (who will be fifty-seven this year), rather than the twenty-five that she is supposed to be. She also flip-flops between confident virgin by choice and self-doubting sexual outcast. The latter narrative flaw is easier to overlook than the former; but both put a nasty kink into Harris' narrative flow.
The story itself is fairly solid - with all of the genre requirements being met:
supernatural beings - check
death w/subtle gore - check
open ending meant to facilitate a potentially never-ending series - check
Working against it is the fact that it is yet another Louisiana vampire story. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone can resurrect the pre-Anne Rice vampire myths; allowing their undead characters to live anywhere they damned well please. At least Harris isn't writing about New Orleans. I have to give her credit for that.
I will admit, I was sucked in by Charlaine Harris' story. I even missed a few favorite television shows in order to continue reading; but, I'm not sure that I loved it. If you're a fan of the recently inundated dark fantasy detective novels, I would recommend it - but I would also suggest buying it used if at all possible.
Hoping the series gets better.......2007-09-24
I've read various contemporary vampire series and figured I'd give this a try. I suppose I could call it kind of cute at times. But that doesn't seem right for a vampire book. But that's it. I think the cover really says it all. The vampire, Bill, has no personality whatsoever. I know he's a vampire, but he could have a little more depth. He's kind of boring. And Sookie... well, I can think of several words to describe her, none of which are very flattering. But, she reminds me of a bad actress. Know how when you see a movie with a character that just clearly can't act? And you want to like her but it's just bad...? That's what Sookie reminds me of. And she spends half the novel crying. I don't know. It was different, so I will probably give the second one a shot.
Reading in between black dagger brotherhood.......2007-09-18
I'll admit that I'm obsessed with vampire romance novels. I haven't been able to find anything to read in between Black Dagger Brotherhood novels. It was actually getting quiet irritating reading 50 pages of a book and putting it down forever. Thank goodness for Sookie Stackhouse. Being from the South has its full advantages when reading this series. The "War of Southern Aggression..." come on...thats just hilarious. This book takes a little getting used to reading, but after the first couple of chapters, you have to know what happens. It is also good to read if you are just getting into romance novels because the love scenes are not quiet as graphic as some other series. All in all, a light, humourous read. Plus, the second and third books are even better!
Something to sink your teeth in.......2007-08-17
Although I should know better than to judge a book by its cover, for the longest time I refused to read this series because the cover just didn't seem to fit a vampire book, however I was running low on books to read, and I've seen Charlaine Harris's name on reviews of several books I adore so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a try. It was well worth the money I spent for the book, and I have a new author to read now.
The characterizations are wonderful and Harris puts a new spin on many of things. Sookie, is a wonderful light hearted main female character and pretty unique in the genera as she seems more down to earth--despite her disability [the ability to read minds]. The vampires in the book cross a wide varieties of spectrums-- from Bill a vampire trying to mainstream it, to Bubba whose drug problem when he was human affected his turning and unlife, as well as the more stereotypical vampires. The plot was also quite solid, with enough twists to keep you entertained.
I am looking forward to reading the other novels in this series.
Dead Until Dark.......2007-08-16
" Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quite, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability". She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome- and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life....
But Bill has a disability of his own. He's a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of - big surprise - murder. And when one of Sookie's coworkers is killed, she fears she's next...."
This was the introduction of the story on the back cover. But I honestly do think that it is very easy to underestimate the story just by reading that intro. The story is much more intriguing, really catchy and very well written. I have actually started reading the series for the second time and it's as good and as "contagious" as it was the first time I read the books.
I definitely recommend these series to those who love paranormal romances/mysteries !!!

Book Description
Rachel Morgan is a runner with the Inderland Runner Services, apprehending law–breakers throughout Cincinnati. She's also a witch, one of the many Inderlanders who revealed themselves after a genetically engineered virus wiped out 50% of humanity. Witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves–the creatures of dreams and nightmares have lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But now theyᵥ stopped hiding, and nothing will be the same.
On the run with a contract on her head, Rachel reluctantly teams up with Ivy, Inderland's best runner䠮d a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shapechanging assassins, outwit a powerful businessman/crimelord, and survive a vicious underground fight–to–the–death䭯t to mention her own roommate!
Fun, sassy, filled with action, humor, and romance, Dead Witch Walking is the perfect summer read for anyone who likes vampires, paranormal fantasy, romance, or just a great beach book.

Absolutely delicious!.......2007-10-02
I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. Every page drips with action, humor and mix of creatures that are good, bad, some in between and also those walking on both sides of existence; dead and the undead. Kim Harrison has created a magnificent world of witches, vampires, demons, pixies, fairies, leprechauns and all sorts of shape shifters. This is the first book in the Rachel Morgan series and I'm in luck to have them all waiting for me on my shelf.
Most of the time I stick to straight horror, no pixy dust and warlocks for me but I just couldn't help myself and jumped into Harrison's world of mischief, mystery and magic. Rachel Morgan plays a bounty hunter working for Inland Security where magical creatures rule with iron laws. Fed up with her cruel boss she decides to leave only to end up with a death contract on her head, thus the title. With help from friends of mighty talents she decides to plan a way out to set herself free and to help he IS catch biodrug lord in order to have them cancel their call on her head. Little does she know what a tough task it proved and ends up getting chased by more than one bad guy. The story leaves the reader ready for the next book in the series so everything does not wrap up completely.
I adored reading about Rachel's magic and her charms, they were her main way of practicing spells and were used to save her skin a few times. The reader is send on a wild ride as Rachel transforms herself, battles animals and demons, fairies and avoids getting bitten by some charming vamps. This was a blast to read, if only all the books were written this way, the world would probably have riots in front of the bookstores and TV's would cease to exist.

Fun and Feisty.......2007-09-13
Dead Witch Walking is a perfect example of this type of book. Ms. Harrison has created a rich and realistic world packed with fun, believable characters. You find yourself rooting for the heroine right away as she travels from one mishap to another. Despite things not always going her way, she still emerges as a strong, self-sufficient heroine who's willing to go toe to toe with the bad guys.
The supporting cast is also strong in this book. Ivy, our heroine's living vampire partner and roommate, is perfectly mysterious. My favorite character, though, is Jenks, the third partner at the firm. Jenks is a pixie - 4 inches tall, with dragonfly wings and still all man.
Although this book is not a cliffhanger - it wraps up acceptably well - it is very obvious there is still a lot of story to be told. I look forward to discovering where Rachel Morgan will head next.
Once you read one, you just can't stop.......................2007-09-03
This series and the introduction of the characters and their world is very refreshing and actually downright intriguing. One actually immerse one's self in Rachel's world. Kim Harrison created something special.
It was alright. 3 1/2 stars, really........2007-09-01
This was an alright book. It has a great mix of characters, all with their own personalities different from each other. The plot was interesting enough to keep you wanting to read more. There were only a few things i found annoying, but those few things *seriously* annoyed me. Firstly, this book is written in the first person perspective - which i usually prefer, btw - with the witch Rachel Morgan as our main character. She annoyed me to no end - which, incidentally, makes it a bit hard to enjoy the book. She was self-centered throughout the entire book, and when the author tried to make her sound as if she was worried about another person, she would do it by having Rachel blame herself for everything. Also, Rachel repeatedly thinks the same things over and over (simply worded a bit differently). For example, when Rachel leaves the I.S. she thinks they won't come after her because they wanted her gone anyway. She thinks this same thing many times before finding out it isn't true. After awhile it gets annoying having her tell you the same thing over and over. Also we are constantly reminded of how much the vampire (and her roommate) Ivy "scares the crap out of her", as if we forgot she had said it 6 pages back as well. I like Ivy's character, and i didn't like how Rachel was constantly hurting her feelings by not trusting her, repeatedly. The one time Ivy does do something to give Rachel a reason to be afraid, i swear Rachel never lets us forget it for a second afterwards. I love books with pixies, vampires, werewolves and the like, so i gave this book a try. Though i definitely prefer Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1) over Dead Witch Walking, I don't regret reading this book.
ANYWAYS, besides the annoyance that was Rachel, I liked most all the other characters. The pixie, Jenks, is the most hilarious character in the book, and gives the book a fun feel to go along nicely with the non-stop action.
Dead Witch Walking was interesting enough, though, that I still want to read the next one, The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (Rachel Morgan, Book 2) . Rachel Morgan isn't my kind of character, but everyone else is so i suppose it makes up for it a bit. I'd suggest checking this out from the library if you can, before buying it. If you can't get it from a library, then, well, it is a cheaply priced book for all its 400 pages.
Refreshing and Enthralling........2007-08-26
After having read all five books so far in this series, I can't wait for the next one. I found it to be fresh, original and invigorating. I highly recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
