A 'must' for all aspiring musicians.......2005-10-07
David Gibson and Maestro Curtis' The Art Of Producing: How To Produce An Audio Project is the first book to standardize a specific production process for a music project from beginning to end, using step-by-step procedures for production, whether it be for a band, group or record company project. Author David Gibson has been producing groups in major 24-track studios since 1982, while Maestero Curtis has worked with numerous artists and produced projects with his own band. Their combined backgrounds provide the most detailed production techniques and latest technology discussions in print, making The Art Of Producing is clearly to be considered as a 'must' for all aspiring musicians.

Some musicians recoil at the thought that their band is a business. They believe that their music is their art, and don't want to sully it with commerce. That's all well and good--but wouldn't you give up your day job if you had the chance? Music Law can help you see your band as a business and turn it into a successful one. Musician and attorney Richard Stim has filled this useful book with helpful advice on solving disputes between band members, dealing with lawyers, managers, and record companies, and even the increasingly important matter of sample clearance. The advice is extremely thorough; for example, the chapter on band names includes information on researching your band's name to ensure it isn't already in use, what happens if two bands have the same name, and even how to register your band's name and logo. Because he advises getting all agreements in writing, Stim has provided dozens of sample agreement forms, both as blank hard copies in the book and as templates on the enclosed disk. Throughout the book, Stim provides important legal advice, all translated from stilted legalese into simple English. Both big and little names get into these difficulties sometimes; the book is peppered with cautionary tales of real musicians and their legal squabbles. Music Law can help you avoid such pitfalls and get your band's business running smoothly--so you might be able to quit that day job, after all. --C.B. Delaney

Good title.......2006-05-20
Running and taking care of the band's business could be a tough and demanding job! If you need help in managing your financials, contracts and especially legal stuff you may choose this book but music business isn't limited here! Apparently that is the aspect most of the people are focused on but that doesn't make a great record and great publicity and you need those before even thinking about managing your business. So if you really want to get to this point first you should read: "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" which teaches you everything from scratch not only parts of this amazing tough world.

Book Description
In this illustrated biography of Daniel Johnston, his life and art are chronicled through extremely rare photos from his early childhood through all stages of his career, along with his own artwork, interviews with the people in his life, and an up to date discography. About Daniel Johnston: Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists -- among them the Dead Milkmen, Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground's songs. And he as collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese, who've also done Daniel's songs), the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth. Daniel gained his widest public exposure to date when, at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that next month is Daniel Johnston Month in New York. The Biennial begins on March 2, with more than a dozen of Mr. Johnston's recent hallucinatory pen and Magic Marker drawings on view. -- The New York Times
Customer Reviews:
A Few Grievances.......2007-03-17
This is a jumpy, amateur publication. Maybe that's okay -- if you can think of it in the context of Daniel's own early, home-made work. It succeeds in collecting interesting epherma from throughout Daniel's life but it would not be a good place for an introduction to this complicated man. If you have seen the film (The Devil and Daniel Johnston) and have an appreciation for his music and/or visual art, then by all means pony up the dough and fill some gaps in what you already know.

A 'must': one of the best industry insider guides on the market.......2006-02-03
Another insider industry reference from Dave Schwensen, Comedy FAQs And Answers: How The Stand-up Biz Really Works covers all the basics of professional comedy, from selecting or writing the right material to running your own open comedy mike, booking gigs, handling heckling crowds, and getting a manager. The aspiring pro has everything in hand to handle club owners, publicists, and more in a guide where the major industry players - George Carlin, Jeff Foxworthy, and more - share their experiences and lessons. A 'must': one of the best industry insider guides on the market.
Answers ALL the Questions!.......2006-01-19
I've been doing comedy for a couple years and this book has the how-to answers for everything I want to achieve in my career. Wish I had a copy of this when I first started because of the writing and open mike advice. The list of comics who answer the questions is unbelievable - including writing advice from George Carlin. I want to be on "Letterman" someday and the talent booker for the show is in the book telling how! It's a great "map" into the world of comedy.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Review: How Do You Know He's Real?.......2007-06-14
In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.
Celebrities Share Their Christian Faith.......2007-05-31
The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.
Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27
(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.
Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Terrific Read!.......2006-05-18
I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!
The book of a lifetime!.......2006-04-18
This is a book that you will no doubt want to share with everyone you know! (I certainly am!) It was so hard to put the book down - but worth it - just to extend the time and joy of reading it! GREAT content! GREAT author! I can't wait to read the next books in the series!

Encouraging. .......2007-05-09
This book was encouraging. It did answer a lot of my questions about record labels. I still think I am going to stay indie because there is just as much money to make this way.
Good.......2006-05-16
An almost complete and well written guide explaining the steps that a struggling musician has to take to ensure success in the record business. You'll find everything here starting from your first contract to the first live shows. A better book that explains exactly the same principles in a more intuitive and easy to understand matter is "The Music Business: How You Can Make $500,000.00 (or More) a Year in the Music Industry by Doing It Yourself! Volume II" By Ty Cohen, . You'll find here testimonies and examples based on the evolution of real companies
Powerful!.......2002-05-25
Daylle's books are a wealth of information for the artist who is serious about their craft and wants to make a living from it. As I've stated before she makes daunting tasks seem achievable and her real life experience is absolutely encouraging and inspirational.
My music biz bible!.......2000-09-05
This book is the best I've read on how to get a record deal. Actually, there are no other books out specifically on this topic. Ms. Schwartz has organized a lot of great information into a concise book. She includes lots of specific things that are common sense but we still don't remember to do. I've read it twice already, there's so much info packed into each chapter. I'm putting out my own CD and the info in the Real Deal was very relevant since I'm trying to get a distribution deal. It's also great for artist development. I read her other book, Start & Run Your Own Record Label and got just as much out of this one. They have different info - she didn't rehash much so you have to read both. The Real Deal is the real deal - she tells how hard it is to get a deal. But it offers lots of motivation and a good spiritual attitude. Thank you Daylle Deanna Schwartz for writing such informative books!
An Essential Guide for All Musicians.......2000-08-18
As a former recording artist turned entertainment lawyer, I highly recommend this book! This is a great basic guide for new musicians (and their managers) who are learning their way around the record industry. It is detailed yet infinitely readable. It is a good reference guide to the ins and outs of getting a record deal - and has other valuable information about the inner workings and politics of getting signed.
