Book of Musical Anecdotes
Norman Lebrecht Manufacturer: Simon and Schuster, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0029187109 |
Book Description
Here is one of the most enjoyable and illuminating books ever published for the music lover, a feast of delightful anecdotes that reveal the all-too-human side of the great composers and performers. There are stories of appetites (Handel eating dinner for three), embarrassments (Brahms falling asleep as Liszt plays), oddities (Bruckner's dog being trained to howl at Wagner), and devotions (a lovely admirer disrobing in tribute to Puccini). There are memorable accounts of Stravinsky telling Proust how much he hates Beethoven, of Tchaikovsky's first bewildering telephone call, of Dvorak's strange love of pigeons, and of Verdi's intricate maneuvering to keep the now-famous melody of "La donna è mobile" top secret.
There is also wonderful trivia (Beethoven loved to cat "bread soup" made with ten raw eggs), along with eccentric strategies (Verdi, disturbed by the sound of street organs playing arias from his operas, hired them all for a season and kept them locked in a room). There are examples of musicians munificent generosity (Haydn called Mozart "the greatest composer known to me, either in person or by name"), and scathing dismissal ("Have you heard any Stockhausen?" the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham was asked. "No," he replied, "but I believe I have trodden in some").
Collected from thousands of books, articles, and unpublished manuscripts (with historical sources provided in extensive notes), these anecdotes appear in their original form, throwing fresh light on familiar figures in the musical hall of fame. For browsing, reading, research and amusement, this book is a grand entertainment for concert-goers, record-buyers, operamanes, gossips and music lovers everywhere.

Mouthing Off: A Book of Rock and Roll Quotes
John D. Luerssen Manufacturer: Telegraph Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1930606028 |
Book Description
Whether it's David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Michael Stipe, or Joan Jett, rock stars are never at a loss for words. Often obnoxious, sometimes introspective, and remarkably honest, these musings are collected here for fans who want an insight into what makes their favorite artists tick, how they view their roles as "stars" in a celebrity-obsessed society, and what does (or doesn't) differentiate musicians from everyone else. Organized by subject matter, it presents a broad cross-section of artists offering diverse commentary on each subject. Drawing from his extensive career as a rock journalist, the author has culled these gems from countless interviews, selecting quotations about subjects such as religion, rock critics, drug use, and the battle of the sexes. Appealing to fans, musicians, and industry mavens alike, it offers familiar foibles and a glimpse into a world often perceived as glamorous and charmed.Customer Reviews:

the guy from Utah completely missed the point.......2002-06-20
So what if not everything these rock stars say is original? Just because somebody else said it first, doesn't mean they said it best. And anyway, I find it interesting to read how the issues, thoughts, and feelings of what it's like to be a working musician remain the same over time, despite the differences in the sort of music they create and the kinds of fans they appeal to.
Whole books have been published on the drug and alcohol induced rampages of the classic rock giants. Mouthing Off spends 2 chapters on the same subject, and covers a much broader range of musicians.
All I can say is that if you didn't find this book entertaining you might want to check and see if you have a pulse.
Mouthing Off is a really cool book!.......2002-06-19
Mouthing Off mostly represents today's artists although it does include legends from decades past. But if you don't think today's rockers observations on sex, drugs, life and songwriting are worthwhile maybe you it's time to graduate to the soft rock station down the dial.
I love this book and keep it handy when I'm pulling MP3's off the web or listening to my CD collection. Anyone who would throw it away is seriously lacking a sense of humor and should probably take a good hard look at him or herself.

Jabberrock: The Ultimate Book of Rock 'N' Roll Quotations
Raymond Obstfeld , and Patricia Fitzgerald Manufacturer: Henry Holt & Co (P) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0805048871 |
Amazon.com
The editors of Jabberock spent years researching articles and interviews in the popular media, biographies and memoirs, and even Web sites to cull the quotes in this book. They've amassed a collection of shouts and murmurs by a wide group of artists on a large spectrum of topics. From Bono's musings on God to Stevie Nick's feelings about songwriting, each phrase offers a unique and often entertaining perspective on both the behemoth social and emotional force known as rock-and-roll music and life itself. Pete Townshend's statement that "Rock is very, very important and very, very ridiculous...." and Johnny Rotten's admission that "I don't listen to music. I hate music...." are but a few of the insights proffered by myriad rock practitioners. The musicians' ideas, rants, and raves about music, sex, politics, fame, fortune, talent, and life offer a unique perspective on the art and practice of rock by those who know it most intimately.Customer Reviews:

Quotable Opera: Aria Ready for a Laugh (Quotable Books)
Manufacturer: Sound And Vision ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 092015154X |
Book Description
What they said when they were not singing.
Here are hundreds of quotes that highlight the wit, wisdom and lunacy of the opera world. Luminaries Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Caruso, Ruffo, Chaliapin, Melba, Sills, Callas, Toscanini, Beecham and other more recent personalities have had lots to say about opera, themselves and each other.
There are venomous quotes from critics and emotional outbursts by performers and listeners. One hapless society matron tried complimenting soprano Eileen Farrell at a reception in her honor with "My dear, you reminded me so much of Kate Smith." The comparison so rattled the diva Farrell that she blurted out, "Well, kiss my ass!" and stormed out.
Austrian conductor Franz Schalk is noted for the most emblematic words about opera life: "Every theatre is an insane asylum, but an opera theatre is the ward for the incurables."
This book will be a delight for aficionados of opera.

Quotable Pop (Quotable Books)
Mike Rooth Manufacturer: Sound And Vision ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0920151507 |
Book Description
One thing pop musicians love to do is think out loud. From the bilious whining of the rich and famous to the pseudo-wisdom of pop's so-called intelligentsia, listening to musicians make noises with their mouths has been almost as much fun as listening to them make noises with their instruments. Quotable Pop collects the best and the worst of these quotations
Some of the quotes from Quotable Pop
"Beethoven I used to really like and a guy called Handel wrote finger exercises that amazed me."
Suzi Quatro
"I don't wear the school suit -- the school suit wears me."

Gene Simmons, KISS

A: Let's get back to music."

Blah Blah Blah!.......2001-11-10
Dellio and Woods, who previously published the hilarious "I Wanna Be Sedated", a primer on pop and rock music of the seventies, are clearly rock critics in the Lester Bangs/Robert Christgau mold. As such, they find plenty of humor in the things rock musicians have been saying through the years, and you will too. This is the perfect book for a bunch of music fans sitting around with too many six-packs and a free Friday evening.
No matter what kind of music you like, you'll find something here. Though musicians from the sixties on up are better represented than the early rockers, you'll find some interesting bon mots from Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and, of course, Elvis (actually both Presley and Costello are represented).
Special mention must also be made of Mike Rooth's glorious caricatures, which are really sharp and add a lot to the book-check out the cover illustration of the Gallagher Brothers as a two-headed monster. For anyone who enjoys popular music to excess, Quotable Pop is an enjoyable read. Now, who said "I'm a total beer slob"?
