4 out of 5 stars For Young Ministers.......2007-05-12

Excellent book. I also found The Minister's Crucible by Fred C. Rochester a great book for ministers, want to be ministers, and those already in ministry. Book books are a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible !.......2001-05-01

The Star Book for Ministers is a wonderful reference guide. It is jam packed with information yet small enough to discreetly and easily carry with you. If you are new to the ministry or someone who has been in the ministry a while, it contains practical helps and information.

Topics covered include: Entering the Christian Ministry, Preaching the Gospel, Pastoral Care, etc. There are almost 100 pages of scripture one can refer to by topic (Confession & Forgiveness, Christian Love, Grief, Comfort, Beneditions, etc). This is most helpful when counseling someone.

Finally there are practical guidelines for dealing with others during weddings, funerals and baptisms as well as suggestions for ceremonies. Indispensible!

5 out of 5 stars The famous black book for ministers!.......2001-03-31

This is THE book to own of its type. Highly recommended to new and old ministers alike. It should be in every ministers library. I always refer back to mine.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for all Ministers.......2000-06-16

I have personally used and highly recommend the Star Book for Ministers. Filled with useful forms, ceremonial procedures, guidelines for different types of services, parliamentary guides for churches, and even ecclesiastical sample letters and blanks, I have found it a priceless resource. I highly recommend this book for all ministers, and especially for the newly ordained clergy or anyone starting a church.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2000-05-20

If your a new minister then this book is a must have. All the basic information you need for day to day activities. Priceless.

Book Description

Here is one of the most enjoyable and illuminating books ever published for the music lover, a feast of delightful anecdotes that reveal the all-too-human side of the great composers and performers.

There are stories of appetites (Handel eating dinner for three), embarrassments (Brahms falling asleep as Liszt plays), oddities (Bruckner's dog being trained to howl at Wagner), and devotions (a lovely admirer disrobing in tribute to Puccini). There are memorable accounts of Stravinsky telling Proust how much he hates Beethoven, of Tchaikovsky's first bewildering telephone call, of Dvorak's strange love of pigeons, and of Verdi's intricate maneuvering to keep the now-famous melody of "La donna è mobile" top secret.

There is also wonderful trivia (Beethoven loved to cat "bread soup" made with ten raw eggs), along with eccentric strategies (Verdi, disturbed by the sound of street organs playing arias from his operas, hired them all for a season and kept them locked in a room). There are examples of musicians munificent generosity (Haydn called Mozart "the greatest composer known to me, either in person or by name"), and scathing dismissal ("Have you heard any Stockhausen?" the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham was asked. "No," he replied, "but I believe I have trodden in some").

Collected from thousands of books, articles, and unpublished manuscripts (with historical sources provided in extensive notes), these anecdotes appear in their original form, throwing fresh light on familiar figures in the musical hall of fame. For browsing, reading, research and amusement, this book is a grand entertainment for concert-goers, record-buyers, operamanes, gossips and music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars More light than usual in Lebrecht's little-known collection.......1999-07-19

Lebrecht gives life to these composers/musicians much in the same spirit that they gave of themselves in their own works. In many ways, these stories are as informative as some music history texts. From Bach to Stravinsky, these stories will make you laugh and cry. If you've grown weary of Lebrecht's more recent dark outlooks on the future of classical music, this book looks back on the sunnier days. Full of humorous, informative and touching stories, you won't regret you bought this!

This collection of Native American quotations, songs, and poems is paired in a handsome, high-quality art book with the classic works of Edward S. Curtis. Convinced he was witnessing an irreversible loss of their cultures, Curtis began traveling the West in the 1890 to photograph members of various tribes. His striking images are a perfect complement to profound observations from Lone Man, Chief Seattle, Mourning Dove, Geronimo, and other wise men and women of the Pawnee, Oglala Sioux, Paiute, Wabanaki Algonquin, and Ojibwa.

    Book Description

Whether it's David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Michael Stipe, or Joan Jett, rock stars are never at a loss for words. Often obnoxious, sometimes introspective, and remarkably honest, these musings are collected here for fans who want an insight into what makes their favorite artists tick, how they view their roles as "stars" in a celebrity-obsessed society, and what does (or doesn't) differentiate musicians from everyone else. Organized by subject matter, it presents a broad cross-section of artists offering diverse commentary on each subject. Drawing from his extensive career as a rock journalist, the author has culled these gems from countless interviews, selecting quotations about subjects such as religion, rock critics, drug use, and the battle of the sexes. Appealing to fans, musicians, and industry mavens alike, it offers familiar foibles and a glimpse into a world often perceived as glamorous and charmed.

    4 out of 5 stars Great short attention-span entertainment........2003-02-12

Do you have a love of coffee shops and music, yet also find it difficult to concentrate on a "normal" book because of all the girls walking by. Here's the answer. I don't know how many times I've picked this up to read for just 3 minutes, then closed it up without being in the middle of a chapter. Really though. Great quotes on everything from thinking and writing, to drinking and fighting, by everyone from Neil Young to Morrissey, and Bowie to Henry Rollins. Enjoy.

GREAT book. I love this book. Has many many great quotes in it.

5 out of 5 stars this book was great.......2002-11-25

if you're a fan of music AT ALL, there is going to be one quote in this book that makes it worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars the guy from Utah completely missed the point.......2002-06-20

OK, so this book isn't just a collection of quips from Led Zeppelin, The Stones and The Beatles. We've heard enough from those folks as it is. I think Luerssen has done a rockin' job of collecting the funniest, silliest, most amusing quotes from a surprisingly broad cross-section of artists--not just the old dinosaurs that people *always* trot out, but people who speak to consumers of music from the past decade as well.

So what if not everything these rock stars say is original? Just because somebody else said it first, doesn't mean they said it best. And anyway, I find it interesting to read how the issues, thoughts, and feelings of what it's like to be a working musician remain the same over time, despite the differences in the sort of music they create and the kinds of fans they appeal to.

Whole books have been published on the drug and alcohol induced rampages of the classic rock giants. Mouthing Off spends 2 chapters on the same subject, and covers a much broader range of musicians.

All I can say is that if you didn't find this book entertaining you might want to check and see if you have a pulse.

5 out of 5 stars Mouthing Off is a really cool book!.......2002-06-19

    ....

Mouthing Off mostly represents today's artists although it does include legends from decades past. But if you don't think today's rockers observations on sex, drugs, life and songwriting are worthwhile maybe you it's time to graduate to the soft rock station down the dial.

I love this book and keep it handy when I'm pulling MP3's off the web or listening to my CD collection. Anyone who would throw it away is seriously lacking a sense of humor and should probably take a good hard look at him or herself.

The editors of Jabberock spent years researching articles and interviews in the popular media, biographies and memoirs, and even Web sites to cull the quotes in this book. They've amassed a collection of shouts and murmurs by a wide group of artists on a large spectrum of topics. From Bono's musings on God to Stevie Nick's feelings about songwriting, each phrase offers a unique and often entertaining perspective on both the behemoth social and emotional force known as rock-and-roll music and life itself. Pete Townshend's statement that "Rock is very, very important and very, very ridiculous...." and Johnny Rotten's admission that "I don't listen to music. I hate music...." are but a few of the insights proffered by myriad rock practitioners. The musicians' ideas, rants, and raves about music, sex, politics, fame, fortune, talent, and life offer a unique perspective on the art and practice of rock by those who know it most intimately.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the lives and comments of rock stars.......2000-04-05

Admittedly, when I first obtained a copy of Jabberrock I wasn't too sure what to expect. A book being hailed as "the ultimate book of rock'n'roll quotations" didn't sound like the makings of great reading yet I soon found myself pleasantly suprised. It is basically a collection of quotes ranging from Elvis Presley to Marlilyn Manson, all categorised and listed in chapters ranging from "sex, love and marriage" and "rebels, politics, and punk" through to "the meaning of life" and "troubled genius". It is genuinely interesting to hear what many of these well known musical icons have to say on topics and subjects that affect them and for a non-fiction book with no story or plot, it certainly introduces us to an assortment of intriguing and strange characters. In all, I found the quotes to be quite interesting, many of them offering insight into the world of musical stardom. Obstfield and Fitzgerald are to be commended on the way that they have categorised the quotes, making for easy reading and a smooth transition through chapters. Whether you have an avid or passing interest in the music industry, this book makes for great reading and is interesting, amusing and suprisingly insightful. I highly recommend it.

    Book Description

What they said when they were not singing.

Here are hundreds of quotes that highlight the wit, wisdom and lunacy of the opera world. Luminaries Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Caruso, Ruffo, Chaliapin, Melba, Sills, Callas, Toscanini, Beecham and other more recent personalities have had lots to say about opera, themselves and each other.

There are venomous quotes from critics and emotional outbursts by performers and listeners. One hapless society matron tried complimenting soprano Eileen Farrell at a reception in her honor with "My dear, you reminded me so much of Kate Smith." The comparison so rattled the diva Farrell that she blurted out, "Well, kiss my ass!" and stormed out.

Austrian conductor Franz Schalk is noted for the most emblematic words about opera life: "Every theatre is an insane asylum, but an opera theatre is the ward for the incurables."

This book will be a delight for aficionados of opera.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Moments from the Wonderful, Wacky World of Opera!.......2003-11-13

The sub-title of "Quotable Opera" ("Aria Ready for a Laugh?")provides a strong hint of what to expect in this delightful collection by Stephen & Nancy Tanner. And lest you think it's all just "fluff," you'll be gratified to find a great number of more serious quotes from the cognoscenti of an art that's been called by so many different names over the years. Among the definitions of opera included here are:
"the most dangerous of all art forms"
"the selection of famous voices for fashionable ears"
"the most rococo and degraded of all art forms"
"an exotick, irrational entertainment" (Dr. Samuel Johnson)
    and, by H.L. Mencken:
"The opera is to music what a bawdy house is to a cathedral."
The chapters of "Quotable Opera" are arranged according to subject, and, like the entire book, with the authors' unique sense of ironic wit and just plain fun. The chapter dealing with quotes by and about Maria Callas, for instance, has the title, "Is Diva Just Avid Spelled Backward?"
As you might imagine, some of the funniest quotations may be found in the chapter dealing with critics --including some of the snide remarks they have made about artists, along with what has been said, even more snidely, about them. One acerbic gentleman, for instance, referred to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as "a viable alternative to valium." But then someone defined a critic as "a virgin who wants to teach Don Juan how to make love."
And speaking of making love, the chapter on "Sex and Opera" is full of amusing remarks from famous singers commenting on the effects of too much (or too little!) sex on their voices.
The abundance of funny stuff in the book -- and that includes the brilliant illustrations by Umberto Taccola -- is interspersed with generous portions of more serious remarks from famous men and women -- singers, musicians, writers, etc. (Even Mel Brooks is quoted at one point!) -- all giving their knowledgeable opinions about this great art form.
Composers are generously represented in these pages, often to great effect. Hector Berlioz, for instance, referred to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde as "a sort of chromatic moan." And
for anyone who has thrilled to a performance of Giacomo Puccini's music, it is illuminating to read what he requested of his librettist for Turandot, his final opera: "Create for me something that will make the world weep."
When you read "Quotable Opera," you may not find yourself weeping, but you will certainly laugh a lot, and along the way you might even learn something!

    Book Description

Jazz musicians are well known for strong opinions and a major sense of humor. Quotable Jazz collects the best of these often funny, sometimes outrageous, always enlightening quotes. It's all here -- the vaudevillian ribaldry of Jelly Roll Morton, the warm humor of Louis Armstrong, the insight of Duke Ellington, the acerbic views of Miles Davis. These greats and many more, both well-known and unsung sidemen, hold forth on a variety of topics including women, race, the music business, the art of improvisation, and that eternal question, "what is jazz and where is it going?"

Quotable Jazz is a one-of-a-kind reference that's as essential to your jazz collection as Coltrane's Giant Steps or Miles' Kind of Blue.

One thing pop musicians love to do is think out loud. From the bilious whining of the rich and famous to the pseudo-wisdom of pop's so-called intelligentsia, listening to musicians make noises with their mouths has been almost as much fun as listening to them make noises with their instruments. Quotable Pop collects the best and the worst of these quotations

Some of the quotes from Quotable Pop

"Beethoven I used to really like and a guy called Handel wrote finger exercises that amazed me."
    Suzi Quatro

"I don't wear the school suit -- the school suit wears me."
    Angus Young, AC/DC

"Nobody's too old to rock 'n' roll but there is a difference between being 40 and being 30."
    Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull

"I asked a ouija board once if I'd ever be in a rock band. It said no and I was crushed."
    Fred Schneider, B52s

"When I'm on stage, it's me up there."
    Lene Lovich

"I'd love to record with Streisand, that would be good for humanity and for artistic merit."
    James Brown

"You know, I resent the word 'subtle'."
    Gene Simmons, KISS

"Q: What kind of birth control do I use?
A: Let's get back to music."
Nick Tosches interviewing Deborah Harry from Blondie

"My motto? The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection."
    Rik Ocasek, The Cars

"My real message? Keep a good head and always carry a light bulb."
    Bob Dylan

"I would say the navy has an interest in communicating opportunities in the service, and the Village People seem to fit in very well with young people."

5 out of 5 stars Blah Blah Blah!.......2001-11-10

Quick--who said, "The (music) industry is just rife with jealousy and hatred. Everybody in it is a failed bassist." Even if you know (it was none other than former Smiths' frontman Morrisey) you'll find plenty of entertainment in perusing the other 800-plus quotes in Quotable Pop :Five Decades of Blah Blah Blah compiled and edited by Phil Dellio and Scott Woods.

Dellio and Woods, who previously published the hilarious "I Wanna Be Sedated", a primer on pop and rock music of the seventies, are clearly rock critics in the Lester Bangs/Robert Christgau mold. As such, they find plenty of humor in the things rock musicians have been saying through the years, and you will too. This is the perfect book for a bunch of music fans sitting around with too many six-packs and a free Friday evening.

No matter what kind of music you like, you'll find something here. Though musicians from the sixties on up are better represented than the early rockers, you'll find some interesting bon mots from Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and, of course, Elvis (actually both Presley and Costello are represented).

Special mention must also be made of Mike Rooth's glorious caricatures, which are really sharp and add a lot to the book-check out the cover illustration of the Gallagher Brothers as a two-headed monster. For anyone who enjoys popular music to excess, Quotable Pop is an enjoyable read. Now, who said "I'm a total beer slob"?
