"A unique reader and commentary with broad coverage of the classics, combined with a healthy skepticism about received theories and an emphasis on the impact of organizations on society. The lucid commentary brightens the field."
- Charles Perrow,
Yale University
For the first time, a single volume offers a comprehensive selection of primary readings and companion overview essays on the sociology of organizations. These readings and essays provide incisive and guided coverage of the subjects normally included in a one-semester sociology of organizations course.
The Sociology of Organizations covers the full range of theoretical perspectives and substantive topics through readings that are either classics in the field or widely discussed and debated "new classics."
Section introductions explain key terms and concepts, provide illustrations, and summarize related debates and research in clear prose. The depth of these overview essays makes this book ideal for use as either as a stand-alone text or a supplementary reader. After reading this book, students will have a thorough understanding of central concepts and an appreciation of the primary texts that are the foundation of the field.
Scholars and students in the fields of sociology, management, organizational behavior, and organizational psychology and those within political science and economics who are interested in how organizations function will find this work a welcome, invaluable resource.
Book Description
Handel ranks with Monteverdi, Mozart and Verdi among the supreme masters of opera, yet between 1754 (when Handel was still living) and 1920 not one of his operas was performed anywhere. Their revival in the modern theatre has been among the most remarkable phenomena in the history of the art. But they are still too little understood, or studied, and until recently no reliable modern editions existed. This long-awaited book is the sequel to Handel's Operas 1704-1726, published in 1987. It is the first study in depth of Handel's last twenty-two operas, including major masterpieces such as Orlando, Ariodante and Alcina and the brilliant lighter works Partenope, Serse and Imeneo. Each chapter contains a full synopsis and study of the libretto, a detailed assessment of the opera's musical and (often misunderstood) dramatic qualities, a performance history, and comparison of the different versions. Much new material has been incorporated. In addition four general chapters throw a vivid light on the historical background. Two Epilogues touch on Handel's dramatic vision, the revival of his operas in the twentieth century, and their performance today. There are a number of valuable Appendices. Together with its predecessor, the book provides the first complete overview of these works. WINTON DEAN is the most distinguished British authority on the life and work of Handel; he has also written extensively on opera in general.
Book Description
This study is based on a detailed textual analysis of the classical works on war by Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, Mao Tse-tung and, to a lesser extent, by Jomini and Machiavelli. The central conclusion is that the logic of waging war and of strategic thinking is as universal and timeless as human nature itself.
This third revised and expanded edition contains five new chapters. One of these concerns Clausewitz' insights into the problem of war termination. Another is dedicated to the importance of correctly identifying the nature of war. The author has also added a chapter on Corbett's naval strategy, the relation of his work to the spirit of that of Sun Tzu, and in particular the issue of limited war and war by limited contingency.

Comparative study.......2007-07-19
I liked the way Handel compares the classical thoughts of Clausewitz and Sun Tzu. This a good way of understanding the fundamental similarities and differences in approach to war the West and East have.
Comprehensive.......2007-04-30
This book is a comprehensive analysis of classical military thought. Although some would argue that this book is for military scholars, I beg to differ, and, heartily suggest this book to any First Year Student of Military Studies. It will greatly assist you in your comparison and analysis of theory and theorists and will also give you a comprehensive understanding of the universal logic of the principles and tenets of war.
This is a great book.

An Accessible Analysis of the Art of War.......2006-08-14
Michael Handel's third and final version of his "Masters Of War" may be the most accessible analysis of classical military thought available to the military professional or academic. Handel's patient, methodical, side-by-side textual analysis of the works of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz overcomes the deceptive simplicity of Sun Tzu's precepts and the equally deceptive dense verbiage of Clausewitz's "On War." The result is an enlightening exploration of what may be mankind's most complex and most dangerous collective activity. For all its wastage and terror, war continues to be a final arbiter of the destiny of nations and ideologies.
Handel's work is an intellectually challenging read designed for the military professional or academic. He examines important concepts such as the centers of gravity, the correlation of ends and means, and the relationship of military and political objectives through a compare and contrast analysis of the writings of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz. The writings of some other authorities such as Mao and Jomini are cited where especially relevant. Handel's prose is straightforward. He uses examples from a broad range of military history to illustrate his points.
The author, who died in 2001, completed his revisions for this edition before the start of the Global War on Terrorism. Nevertheless, both classical military thought and Handel's analysis continue to be relevant.
This book is very highly recommended for the mid-grade military professional, especially for those studying at the intermediate service college level, and for the military academic seeking a broader understanding of the operational and strategic levels of war.
Essential reference........2001-12-05
The best side-by-side comparison of Sun Tzu, Clausewitz, and Jomini strategic thought one can find. Included is Mao's strategic approach to completely round out classical perspective on war and strategy. The single best reference for understanding the similarities and differences between the masters of strategy.
Ideal for the academic,.......2001-06-02
is how I would describe Handel's 'Masters of War'. This however should not deter the keen reader from purchasing the book as it is indeed a wonderful, clear and interesting read.
In the course of his analysis, Handel sets out to compare and contrast the different schools of thought that 'the greats' developed, with particular attention being paid to Sun Tzu and Von Clausewitz. Perhaps this is where the text comes into its own for the academic. If one was to consider writing a study on the conduct and role of the military in this day and age, this book brings not only Sun Tzu and Von Clausewitz, but also Jomini and Machiavelli into focus. The student will hardly require a more comprehensive guide to different schools of thought for the construction of their essays.
In conclusion therefore, I would reaffirm my belief that this text would prove invaluable for any classical military analyst trying to find a text helping and perhaps reducing the amount of time devoted to sifting through Sun Tzu's 'Art of War' and Von Clausewitz's 'On War'. However, taken out of this context, although highly readable, it is perhaps beyond the requirement of the casual reader whom might be better served reading abridged texts of the originals first.

Great book for ideas.......2006-03-02
This was a great book for ideas about your dear birthmother letter. The only negative I found was that all the sample letters were seemingly written by very rich families, making adoption seem more out of the grasp of reality for regular families. But the info and advice that the author gave was extremely helpful!
Essential Reading!.......2005-11-24
I highly recommend Reaching Out to adoptive parents who are told by their agency, attorney, case worker, etc. that they must write a Dear Birthmother Letter. This is the only source of the many that I investigated that had any help for writing a DBL. The one other book that comes up when you search for "Dear Birthmother" cannot compare to the wealth of information in Mr. Handel's book. He covers everything from the details (check your spelling) to philosophies (be yourself) to methods of writing (the I, we, or us letter). Mr. Handel also supplies many writing tips. I found the book to be a great source of inspiration. This was also one of the only adoption-related books my husband read in its entirety. He enjoyed it as well!
Insightful, Entertaining and Informative.......2003-08-13
As an adoption professional, I recommend this book to all of my clients. The author turns the daunting task of drafting an outreach letter into a manageable and enjoyable process. Written with insight, sensitivity and humor, the book guides you from initial idea to final product -- an outreach letter that speaks honestly and compellingly to potential birthmothers.
Great title, great book.......2003-04-09
The "reader from San Jose" has unfortunately never read this wonderful and sensitively written book. In the Foreword, the author clearly explains the use of the term "Dear Birthmother Letter" as the common reference term for these very important letters of introduction. He also directly acknowledges that expectant parents are not properly termed "birthparents" until after they make a placement, and speaks supportively of the expectant father's role in adoption decisions.
This is an extraordinarily helpful book, full of authoritative research, clear guidance, warm humor, and genuine sensitivity to everyone involved in the adoption triad. It was highly recommended to me by both my attorney and my adoption counselor. In the process of helping me write a letter that truly reflected my heart, it also dispelled many of the fears I had, born of misconception. To judge it without reading it does this book, and the adoption community, a grave disservice.
There is something very wrong with the title.......2003-03-24
When I was looking at books on the topic of adoption, this one caught my eye. There is a big mistake, and it's in the title. The parents that prospective adoptive parents write this letter to are NOT birthparents. In fact, they may never be. They are people who are considering an adoption plan. They may choose to parent. Additionally, the father may be quite involved in this process. To ignore him completely by writing a dear birthMOTHER letter seems a little insenstive at best. However, my biggest complaint is with the assumption that the pregnant mom is already a birthmother. For anyone involved in adoption (birthparents, adoptive parents, counselors, attorneys, facilitators) to fail to recognize this important fact leads me to, quite honestly, question their understanding of this process. She is a mother, plain and simple, until the papers are signed.

Defalco captures the very best of the beauty of Handel.......1998-12-06
This is the absolute best reference book on Handel lighting - period. Defalco & Company show that they are the number one authority on the subject of Handel. I have seen many reference publications with examples of Handel lighting but never such a comprehensive work such as this.

Customer Reviews:
Will I be working at Vidal Sasoon anytime soon?.......2007-07-20
I'm not sure if anyone can learn to master a skill from a book; could you really learn a language or how to cook by reading about it, especially if you're a beginner? But you can get some basic skills and I found this book to be a good beginning. The photos are clear as are the directions. I cut my own hair from this book (not the easiest or the brightest accomplishment) and it wasn't the worst haircut I ever had; it was pretty decent. I actually got a couple of compliments on it. But it was a very basic cut and there are only pictures for a few styles. I have fine, medium-length curly hair and there was no picture for that cut. The author does suggest variations on the basic styles she does give, but without the pictures and the step-by step instructions, I felt it was a little too complicated to chance. Also, the styles are really basic and somewhat dated. I could have followed the style for long, curly hair, although it was for thick hair, but the style was awful even for the 1970s, when it was in fashion.
But you can easily learn to give a basic cut or trim friends and family members' hair in between visits to the salon, save a bit of money and feel proud that you can do something for yourself. And if you really love it then you can go and enroll in beauty school. As for me, I am going to buy a French language CD.
Tons of photos, easy to follow; styles are simple but timeless.......2007-04-02
My husband's hair grows faster than mushrooms on a damp night, so you can imagine how much it would cost to keep his hair trimmed. He used to just wear it long but that's no longer practical. I had been cutting his hair, but all I could do was give him a buzz cut with the clippers, or this strange cut that made him *look* like a mushroom.
I guess I wanted more inspiration.
I liked this book because it covers hair styles for men, women and children. Most of the styles are simple enough for beginners but there are also more advanced techniques included such as layering and blending. Also, the styles are not trendy at all. You won't find the Rachel cut, or the Farah Fawcett shag. Instead these hairstyles are classic and should endure for years and years to come. Also included in this book:
* How to do bangs, blunt and curved.
* How to do a blunt cut for short, medium or long hair
* How to do layered cuts for short, medium and long hair
* Children's haircuts for boys and girls
* Four classic men's hair cuts
* Hair preparation, cutting angles and how to establish guides
I'm a visual learner and the tons of photos really helped. I also liked that the photos were of real people with all shapes and sizes of faces, with all types of hairs. Not the professional models where every hair cut would look fabulous on them.
An added bonus is a section that gives recipes for shampoos, rinses and hair moisturizing treatments. The author argues that it is sometimes cheaper to make your own haircare products and that many manufactured products have a petrolatum base which can build up in your hair.
All in all, I have been very satisfied with this book. It covers everything about the basics and hair care to boot! It does not have a huge selection of styles to choose from, however for my purposes, it is more than adequate.
Basic.......2006-08-27
This is a good picture book but very basic. It's enough for me but if you want tons of styles to choose from this one is not for you.
This is a very well done book with color pictures.......2004-10-03
Note: My review is for the 2002 Edition. There is also a 2005.
I ordered this book from Amazon. I feel this is a great book considering that most haircutting books use illustrations to show how to cut hair and this one uses pictures of people. The book also has some recipes for making your own products. I also like that this book is written in layman's terms so anyone can learn. It may not have more advanced cuts but it's a quality book. You can't get much better info unless you watch a video or take a class. It has step by step instructions for the following,
For Children:
Girls' one-length cut / Girls' medium one-length cut / Boys' one-length short cut.
For Women:
Short one-length cut with bangs / Medium one-length cut with bangs / Long one-length cut / Short layered cut /
Short layered wispy cut / Short one length cut with layered back /
Medium layered cut / Long layered cut.
For Men:
Short cut / Short layered cut / Medium layered cut / Clipper cut (very short).
There are also plenty of pictures of other styles that aren't step by step.
Cutting your family's hair.......2003-04-09
The book is o.k. if you happen to need to cut hair in a style that is pictured. There are only a few styles in the book and the approach is much the same for all of them. I would strongly recommend looking through the book first at Borders before ordering.

Anyone attending a Messiah sing-along is most likely to fit in when using this old favorite edition. The musicological work has been superseded by Watkins Shaw's edition for Novello, but his piano reductions are idiosyncratic. This piano-vocal score has no measure numbers or rehearsal figures, but the reduction is pianistic in scope. The choral lines are in smaller type but are workable. The price is of course also highly attractive. Listeners who truly love this work may be interested in the full orchestral score--also at a great price--from Dover, edited by Alfred Mann. --William R. Braun

A Fine Piano Score of Handel's Messiah'.......2006-12-04
This is pretty much the standard 'Messiah' piano/vocal score used in America. I've been using a copy of this edition for nigh on twenty years and it's gotten plenty of use; it is sturdy enough that it shows no sign of falling apart. The printing is clear and easy to read. There is no distracting German text as in some editions. The piano reduction is good and fairly easy to play. And the price is certainly right.

A Higher 'Messiah'.......2000-04-25
This Schirmer edition of Handel's Messiah is among the better chorus/piano editions I've seen. It maintains loyalty to the original piece, presenting it in the classical format. At the same time, I find the text easy to read, and the overall size of the book to be just right.
Book Description
This book is an edition, with commentary, of Handel's exercises for continuo playing, which he wrote for the daughters of George II. The exercises, which until now have not been readily available, are supplemented by clear and concise commentary. Remaining faithful to his source, Ledbetter,
who lectures in keyboard studies, has prepared an edition that will prove invaluable to students and performers of the music of Handel and his contemporaries.
