Customer Reviews:
AMAZING!!.......2007-07-19
I am about to enter my second semester of Spanish in college and I think this book is simply amazing!! I love the way that it explains Spanish words, vocabulary, and grammar in a way that is easy for people who never had Spanish before to understand the language and a refresher for people who had Spanish in high school, but had forgot some basic words, vocabulary, or concepts. Anyway, each chapter does focus on a small portion of a Spanish-speaking country, but that what makes the book interesting!! It allows each student to grasp information about each particular country, enabling each person to be exposed to each country's culture. The book cannot talk about every single little detail within a particular country. If the student is interested in learning more about the country, he/she can go on the Internet and find more information about it. Personally, I love this book and think it is an excellent source for anyone taking Spanish in college.
Not recommended.......2006-08-29
I have been teaching with this book for 2 years and the more familiar I am with it the less I like it and the more mistakes I find on it. It was not chosen by me and I hope we'll change it soon. The textbook and workbook have plenty of mistakes even though it is a second edition.
This book claims to cover cultural elements from most Spanish speaking countries but it only sets each chapter in a different country, with very little cultural information about each place. The "encuentro cultural" section is the only cultural information in the book (apart from the video section) and most times is inaccurate or just plain boring or not interesting at all. Another problem is that many of the communication exercises are not communicative at all and not very involving for the students. Finally, I think that a book which costs more than $100 should, at least, have more pictures and color pages and it should try to make learning a language a more rewarding and fun experience.
Book Description
All students are not equal when it comes to the intermediate course-they all come to class with different levels of language preparation. It was because of this challenge that BRAVO! was created-and over the years it has evolved into a proven solution for student success. BRAVO! brings parity to the intermediate course, enabling students of diverse backgrounds to review first-year structures independently before delving into new material. A CHANCE TO LEVEL THE LEARNING FIELD Grammaire à réviser-a BRAVO! hallmark and a built-in course equalizer-allows students to self-assess and evaluate their readiness for each chapter's lessons. Grammaire à réviser acts as a diagnostic and/or assessment tool for both the instructor and the learner, checking for mastery of the forms and structures at hand. Those who need the review prior to class have it-and if they need more help on specific grammar points they can to the Workbook/Lab Manual (also available online on the QUIA platform). If they need even more help, they can access vMentor, a FREE live online tutoring resource. Students are empowered to come to class on a more level learning field with those students who are better prepared. As a result, more time will be spent in class using the structures functionally as well as practicing new material. No other intermediate French program offers more in-text and study tools to help instructors teach and students learn-effectively bridging the gap between introductory and intermediate course.

Horrible Book!.......2005-10-18
This textbook is difficult to use and doesn't adequately explain grammatical points, and it is not put together well. The tests with this book use idiomatic expressions and other grammatical points that aren't fully explained or expressed in the text. It doesn't offer any type of practice test program like its predecessor Rendez-vous. Personally, I don't like Rendez-vous or Bravo; the two books just don't present the material in a clear and concise manner. I would suggest to any instructor considering this book for his or her class to make another choice! Students would be better off buying a learn-it-yourself program at their local bookstore rather than taking a course with this book! If you're looking for a good intermediate French textbook consider Interaction - Révision de grammaire française 6th edition by Susan St. Onge, Ronald St. Onge, and Katherine Kulick. For advanced grammatical studies I recommend La Grammaire à l'oeuvre 5th edition by John Barson. Both of these wonderful books are published by Thomson-Heinle.

learning Italian on the go.......2007-09-19
It's very good for the real beginner; the introduction is kind of boring and repetitive but it's is effective. Then it gets better and fun. I learned quite a bit.
Fantastico!.......2007-07-26
So far so good, still on the first CD. It's easy to understand and great process for learning. The break down on how to pronounce the words makes it easy.
Easy to Learn Basics.......2007-07-19
I bought this CD set for my mother who wants to learn Italian, but doesn't have the time to take a class. I've listened to the CD's with her and found the lessons very easy to understand, pronounce and retain. The CD's are broken down from Beginner to Advanced and the booklet that comes with the set is a great guide for reviewing what you've learned and to assist with annunciations. A fun purchase for those who want to get their feet wet with a new language!
Not for Vacationers.......2007-07-18
As mentioned in another review, first CD is great, then "learning" triple speeds so, if you are lucky, you will catch only one or two words. Plus, vocabulary is not for travelers - you can learn how to ask if people are from Spain or China, but not how to find stations, menu items, etc. Very disappointed.
Drive Time: Italian (CD).......2007-06-27

Excellent choice and explanation of idioms.......2007-06-01
Being a non-native speaker who has lived in US for over 10 years, I've heard of many of the idioms in this book at work, on TV and in every day conversations. I didn't know what some of the idioms mean exactly until I read them in this book. I think the book is very useful for immigrants like me or simply anybody who would like to learn American English.
Homeowner.......2007-02-21
Excellent with a great many up-to-date expressions and words. CDs let you listen while doing other things. The book allows one to read what is on the CDs.
Unexpectable.......2007-01-10
I didn't expect i would have a great book to improve my English.
I'm in my home country now so I've got going on studying since one an half month . It has 25 lessons and I'm on 12th. I can't wait to skip for the next one because I wonder what's going to happen in subject. But I know I need to consume each lesson. The fiction is really set successfully.
I listen to its CD and my pronunciation has already improved.
I appreciate the edition and the author.
Nesibe
PS: sorry about my English if I've done something wrong:)
Speak English Like an American.......2007-01-10
One of the best idiom books out there, and I've tried quite a few. The stories are entertaining and most of the idioms are very common.
Excellent.......2006-06-02
I am really amazed of how much idioms and colloquial expressions you can learn just by listening to the CD. And guess what - these are idioms and phrases you REALLY hear everyday on the street, used by most people in everyday situations. Before, my English sounded a bit "artificial" and somehow forced. Now, the more I used the idioms I learnt here, the more natural and even friendly I sound to the native speakers.
Buy it, it's totally cheap for what it does!

good product, fast shipping.......2007-05-21
Good product, but not made to learn a massive amount of Swahili in a short time span. Instead, it's an in-depth coverage of grammar and language rules. Excellent package if you have a considerable amount of time to devote to learning Swahili.
Great course!.......2007-03-21
This course to teach yourself Swahili is easy for anybody - all you need is to take time and study.
Good Buy.......2006-11-04
It was hard to find a book on Swahili. This one is easy to follow, the CD's are great and they have quizes after each chapter. It will teach you everything you need to know.
No passive learning in your car.......2006-08-04
This is a very thorough course - goes well beyond a phrasebook, and the CD is only worthwhile if you read along and do the exercises. So, no passive learning by listening over and over on your commute.
So, for a quick course in airport and hotel Swahili, choose something else. For a working knowledge of the language, this is perfect.
Can't Lose.......2006-07-24
At this price? You will speaking Swahili after soaking in this whole book. All you need after this book is the CD (so you can hear), and a dictionary to extend your vocabulary. The only fault I have is that some words in the English half of the book's dictionary aren't found in the Swahili side, and vice versa. But, this is an EXCELLENT beginners course. An excellent value. The structure of the language is well spelled out.

Not for dummies!.......2007-05-07
Learning a language is difficult, at least for me, and I was disappointed with this book. Yes, it does provide a lot of information, but it is not presented in a way that makes learning the language any easier, fun or engaging. And, since I enjoy learning Italian, I've tried several types of programs. I use this book more as a reference tool. Can't imagine ever learning the language from scratch with it! Clearly not for dummies.
Just a peek.......2007-05-01
This book and CD is a bird's eye view introduction to Italian. If you a serious about learning the language, choose a product with lots more audio content. Unless you hear the spoken language you'll never grasp it.
On the other hand, if a quick look is what you're looking for, then this is the book for you.
Fantastico!.......2007-03-11
This is a really easy book to use. believe it or not, Italian is my first language, English my second & I speak several others as well! I used this book as a refresher course & I was totally amazed at the ease of use & the ability to understand everything that was put before me! I highly recommend this book to absolutely anyone that wants to learn basic Italian!
NO CD-ROM W/THIS BOOK!!.......2006-11-25
I purchased this book as it supposedly came with a CD-ROM - it does not!! It comes with a regular audio CD. The error in the product title is on AMAZON'S part, as Amazon clearly describes it as containing a "CD-ROM." I didn't notice until I received it that the book cover states "audio CD". As for book content, no comment yet, as I'm trying to decide whether the book is staying or going.
learning a foreign language.......2006-03-13
I am still at the first stages, but learning a Italian is fun and the "Dummies" book is helpful!

Customer Reviews:
This is it!.......2007-09-16
Great for English-as-a-second-language, or for those who just want to sound more American. American Accent Training is THE tool for developing your American Accent. I am American born, from the Midwest, so I bought it to help me learn how to speak better in my own native tongue. Most people don't realize that there is a unique, distinct accent that is truly American. And, contrary to popular belief, the American Accent once developed will make you sound more intelligent and confident. Most Americans want to learn Spanish or some other foreign language; I say learn your own language first before stumbling into something else!
The American pronunciation building.......2007-09-15
This book is helpful for everybody who is training his or her pronunciation and intonation. It gives you possibilities to master your pronunciation with routine practice when you follow the instructions in the book. The book helps you to hear, understand and build the music of the language. It contains helpful exercises for every sound and intonation stress. The voice and pronunciation on CD are very clear and professional. I enjoy using The American Accent Training guide.
American Accent Training.......2007-09-03
If you are looking for a book to improve your skills with speaking and pronouncing American English, then this is the book for you. The text comes with the CD-ROM that goes through everything written in the book, then provides space for the student to repeat back what has been said if the student is working on his or her own. However, it is also quite useful as a text for in-class work and one-on-one tutoring to help non-native speakers improve their American accent, with the CD-ROM providing supplemental training opportunities for the really motivated student.
The emphasis in Ann Cook's approach is to practice the vocal patterns associated with standard American English, rather than to focus on the exactly correct and distinct pronounciation of each word. In the process, students start sounding more natural to the native speakers around them, thereby increasing the students' confidence in the skills they are learning.
american accent training.......2007-09-01
this book allows me to improve my intonation and accent as like a native
speakers.
Worth for your $$.......2007-08-17
This is something you must have. If you are not a native English speaker and have been looking for a good book. This is the one. I bought so many audio books and did not feel right about it, but this one. So this is really worth for your $$.

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, could be better.......2006-10-29
I find the organization is a little "off" with learning the tenses and grammar, and there are some small grammatical mistakes. The CD included is good to listen to to hear native accents.
Tremendous method for language self education.......2001-03-12
I've studied Latin, German, Japanese, and French using various popular methods. This course with its accompanying audio and workbook materials is the best language course that I have ever attempted on my own. Most self-study language courses are either too simple to be of practical use or focus so much on grammar and sentence construction that they turn into drudgery after a few lessons. Unless the course material is engaging, it's very hard to continue the course with no mid-term or final exams as motivation. Simply put, I enjoyed this course so much that I looked forward to each of my weekly self-study sessions.

Customer Reviews:
great quality.......2007-09-21
Book is in pristine condition BUT, didn't come with book code for the online Quia workbook.
Ciao.......2006-03-22
Unfortunately the CD does not seem to follow the text. Presentations on the CD are very limited and do not provide good practice for students. The Berlitz CDs are much better.
The book is very expensive for a language text. In updating the text through sequential editions, the authors have added very little to the topic, but have changed the pagination sufficiently to make it necessary for students to buy the latest edition. Thus increasing the cost for students without any significant improvements in the material.
In some places there are vignettes in Italian with no translation provided. Since some of the expressions are not in the vocabulary, this makes it difficult to understand, for example "Informazioni", page 86 in the 5th edition.
Good accompaniment for the textbook!.......2000-08-29
This lab manual is a great accompaniment for the textbook "Ciao"! I found that the exercises are very helpful. They emphasise the grammatical points made in the textbook very well. The only problem with it is that if you use it to teach yourself, and are not in a classroom situation, you can only do half of the exersises, as no tape or CD is included for the laboratory half of the book. I think it is still worth buying, inspite of this flaw!
What a help!.......2000-06-01
This workbook as tremendously helpful in supplementing the work from the textbook and classroom exercises. It brought together all the activities and lessons as an additional reinforcement. I would definitely recommend purchasing this workbook/lab manual.
