Book Description

"Our house is a very, very, very fine house. With two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard..." In 1970, "Our House" was recorded and released by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and immediately became a sentimental favorite for millions of fans. Its honest, romantic, homespun lyrics expressed a sentiment felt by all of us. To this day, the song remains a classic and is one whose melody and lyrics can be sung and repeated by the millions of people whose lives it touched. Songs like these and many others have created landmark moments in all of our lives, marking and celebrating key events, past and better times, current relationships, and hopes for the future. Now, Manuscript Originals has compiles the stories behind a collection of 25 of the world's most celebrated songs in Off The Record, a stunning book and CD collection that will commemorate the impact these classic songs have had in our contemporary world. Original handwritten images of the lyrics from these classic songs rendered by their original authors and accompanied by the songwriter's own artwork will be displayed in each of the book's 25 chapters. In addition, readers will find historical, social and "off the cuff" personal insights about these fascinating people and the music they produced. Illuminating photographs - some from the writer's or performer's personal archive that have never been seen before - will also document the journey of each artist's individual songwriting path. While the names of some of the songwriters included in Off the Record are better known to the general public than others, the songs these artists are associated with are some of the most famous titles in the world. Among the songwriters included are Graham Nash, David Crosby, Grace Slick, Ben E. King, Jimmie Davis ("You Are My Sunshine"), John Lee Hooker, Waylon Jennings, Randy Bachman, Peter Yarrow, and many, many more. The CDs enclosed in Off The Record include individual audio interviews from selected writers about their famous song's origin and the songwriter's perspectives on the creative process. A musical rendition of the song and/or its famous melody will also be represented. All told, Off the Record presents a remarkable and unique look into the world of songwriters and their classic songs. It gives the general consumer the ability to personally connect with some of the most beloved music of our times.

5 out of 5 stars May the musical journey never end........2004-11-15

This book is an absolute Gem!I just spent the afternoon enjoying this terrific book and the 2 CD's that came along with it.25 great songs, mainly from the second half of the 20th. century, and the songwriters behind them. The songs and writers were so well chosen that it's hard to imagine anyone not liking most,if not all,the choices.
To listen to these Artists talk about their lives, work, and the things that meant so much to them is a real treat. The interviews are all very personal and it seems that everything was spontaneous and came right from the heart.
Here is some of what you'll find:
"If you wanna make it,you can't fake it,you gotta live it."
Hank Williams Sr.
"The answer,my friend,is blowing in the wind."
Peter Yarrow will tell you what it means.
"You don't hit a home run every time you come to bat.You don't hit oil every time you drill."Jimmie Davis,Gov.Louisiana and writer of "You are my Sunshine".
"Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your Cold,Cold Heart." Where did Hank get that title?
"The Dragon lives forever and has been with us for 3 or 4 generations." Peter Yarrow
"Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree." L.Russell Brown tells us what prompted this one.
"Love is Like a Burning Ring of Fire"What gave Merle Kilgore and June Carter Cash the idea for this song?
I am reluctant to say anything negative about this super book;but I felt a letdown after the end of each interviev on the CD's.I think the songs should have been included in their entirety;but then again it would have been impossible to give it only 5 stars.
I read the book and then listened to the CD's;and found that a good order.
Finally,I'd recommend you read the other reviews. They all have something to add.

4 out of 5 stars Only thing missing . . ........2003-01-11

. . . was the music! I was surprised and mildly disappointed that the CD's didn't include the original recordings of the songs talked about. Other than that it was most enjoyable

Already anxious for the next edition! I've always been a big fan of Graham Nash's, but never had the benefit of so much insight into the creation of great songs. Where do you find this type of memorable music today? It's rare. I can listen to each of the featured 25 songs in Off the Record and tell you about a special memory that is conjured up from the recesses of my mind. It's fascinating to read the artists' stories behind the songs. Please Graham, give us more!

Students searching for the inside scoop on U of Mich will enjoy reading this book. The book provided some insight on the housing on campus that we couldn't get from the college website.

For all your info needs on University of Michigan, turn to this book. Seriosly. Nothing has impressed me more in terms of the kind of detail given to all aspects of the college. I came away from reading it with such a much better feel of both the school and the area around it. The fact that a student wrote it makes it that much more unique and honest.

Book Description

Here is quite simply one of the most original books about a jazz musician ever published--a biography-cum-discography that focuses in turn on fourteen major albums recorded by Miles Davis, using them as a jumping off point for an illuminating discussion of the turbulent life and work of the "Evil Genius of Jazz." Richard Cook, a veteran writer respected throughout the jazz world, looks at such landmark recordings as Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Kind of Blue, The Complete Live at The Plugged Nickel, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and Live at Montreux. Each of these recordings is considered in detail, illuminating their contribution to Davis's development as instrumentalist, group leader, and composer. But Cook goes well beyond these fourteen albums, evaluating all the trumpeter's recordings (official and bootleg), and relating them to events in Miles's life as well as to wider currents in contemporary music. Cook helps us disentangle Miles the legendary figure from the music itself, to re-hear and reconsider this marvelous body of work ranging over four exhilarating decades. The author also highlights the indispensable contributions of sidemen such as John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, and many others, as well as calling for a reassessment of the importance of such "satellite" figures as Gil Evans, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Chick Corea in the development of Miles's music. A comprehensive and rigorous guide to the music and life of Miles Davis, It's About That Time is a stunning book that burns away the fog of myth that surrounds its complex and contrary subject.

4 out of 5 stars Miles & Miles.......2007-06-01

The author discusses the career of Miles by focusing on his huge legacy of recordings. The more traditional jazz of Miles was basically between 1945 and 1966. There are 65 record entries in that time frame. The total includes major label as well as bootlegs. From 1967 thru 1991, the year of his death, there are 66 more albums. Miles made his mark in the jazz world with his early playing with Charlie Parker, his Birth Of The Cool Album,Sonny Rollins, and then his band that included Coltrane,Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Later on he had sidemen such as Wynton Kelly, Hank Mobley, Sonny Stitt,Bill Evans,Jimmy Cobb and Cannonball Adderly. Of course his collaborations with Gil Evans were significant. Next was what I would call the transitional group comprised of George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Personally, I lost interest in Miles Davis as he moved more and more into the rock area and seemed to be in search of a new musical identity. So, this book fills in that time period fairly well. I was amazed that so many of the later recordings basically consisted of engineering edits. A worthwhile, if somewhat tedious read. By the way, the author deserves some kind of a medal for listening to all the albums. Particularly, most of the later ones.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and generally well-informed. Maybe a little peccable........2007-05-15

I'm having fun reading this book. It's a pleasure to dwell on lots of my favorite Miles records in the company of a highly knowledgeable fan. Cook knows well lots that I don't, and he has interesting opinions on everything. Not that I always agree: He damns "Moon Dreams" with faint praise -- I've always felt it's one of the two strongest tunes from "Birth of the Cool," and he gives even shorter shrift to the ominous "Deception," which in my mind is the other one. Of course, sometimes I pound the table in agreement, as when he calls "Billy Boy" "an irritating distraction" (for all its acknowledged groove) on the "Milestones" record. That is of course what's fun about these kinds of books (or conversations). It's like comparing sports teams: everybody (i.e., nobody) wins the argument.

There are some less satisfying aspects to the book, such as when he neglects to include the French horn section in his listing of the instrumentation on "Sketches of Spain," surely one of the more important aspects of the sound of that record. Or when he puts the bridge in "Miles" (or "Milestones") as A Aeolean, when I've always heard it as A Dorian (the way the rhythm section treats it: scale on the 2nd degree of G Maj rather than on the 6th degree of C Maj). Maybe I'm being picky...or wrong. And maybe it makes a big difference in the feel of the song.

There's also a peculiar almostness to Cook's language, that recalls to me Mark Twain's statement that "The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." Once again, it's all a matter of opinion and connotation, of course.

Then, sometimes his word choice is thought-provoking: he more than once refers to Miles's sometime ballad approach as "preening." Not sure I agree, but I'm not sure I don't. It certainly asks me to relisten, carefully. Thanks for that.

All in all, an enjoyable trip through Miles's discography with a knowledgeable if not entirely impeccable guide.

3 out of 5 stars Who is this for?.......2007-04-28

OK, the scholarship is impeccable, but who is this for? If you don't know the music, the descriptions of the bands and the albums don't do much for you. On the other hand, if you're such a Miles fan that you have all this stuff, why do you need Richard Cook telling you what you're hearing? You've probably read the liner notes to the CD's or boxes, and it doesn't seem to me that there is much that he adds. This seems to be mostly an expansion on Cook's writing on Miles's music in the Penguin Guide, and if you want to know his opinion as to which CD's to buy, I'd take a look at that instead. As good as this is, I'm not sure why you'd buy it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best miles davis books available.......2007-03-01

There are many books written about Miles Davis. Several of them are excellent (Ian Carr's, the auto-biography, etc). This book by Richard Cook ranks with the best.

This book's focus is the music. Although Cook uses some definitive Davis recordings as a device to divide chapters and time periods in his career, the author does not limit his analysis strictly to those recordings. The end of each chapter includes several other recordings from the period, including some European imports and common bootlegs.

As co-author of the Penguin Jazz Guide and his own encyclopedia of jazz, Richard Cook knows his jazz, his recordings, and his Miles Davis. His analysis is interesting and enlightening.

I highly recommend this book.

Introduction from the Author

Coming from the northwest corner of the United States, people are often befuddled when I tell them I go to Northwestern University. “Is that in Seattle?” they ask. Apparently, word hasn’t reached Portland, Oregon yet about this ever-demanding, challenging, and intriguing school in suburban Chicago.

Most people already know—or think they know—about Northwestern: fairly small school, right outside of Chicago, excellent academic reputation … and, “Didn’t Ross from Friends go there?” True, but to those on the inside, NU is so much more. It’s a diverse school boasting six sub-schools that concentrate on everything from education to music to engineering. It’s a campus open to discussing all aspects of contemporary global problems, and it’s also our home.

Northwestern is often referred to as a jewel of the Midwest, and in the last 30 or so years, it has gained recognition as a leading research institution. The University has been entrenched in scandal over the death of a football player, and it has gotten into a lawsuit with the city of Evanston.

Behind the news and magazine articles, behind the historic legacies, and behind the campus tours, there is a throbbing pulse to Northwestern. As you leaf through the following pages, I hope you begin to discover the Northwestern that myself and my classmates all know: the living, ever-changing University, that is in a constant struggle to one-up itself and come out on top. You too can find the heartbeat of NU. You just have to be willing to feel for it. You can start by reading through this guidebook.

College Prowler books are well worth the investment for students and parents investigating colleges. They give a detailed picture of the school, written from current students' perspectives. Once you have narrowed your list of schools to 10 or fewer, I would recommend buying the College Prowler titles for all of those. It's a small investment compared to the cost of visiting the campus, application fees, and -- of course -- TUITION!

Introduction from the Author

It wasn’t long ago that I was in your shoes. People kept asking, “So, where are you going to college?” I didn’t know. I didn’t even know where to begin. It seemed like I could easily have spent four years just looking at all the options. This was compounded by the fact that, like most of you, I was pretty unsure about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It wasn’t until a friend of the family started telling me about his alma mater that I really started thinking about Georgetown.

I visited Georgetown, and I fell instantly in love with the campus and the entire city. There really is no place like it in the world. Now when I tell people where I am at school, they say things like “Oh, I didn’t know you had an interest in politics,” or, “So, are you going to be president some day?”

But Georgetown University is more than that. Since its founding in 1789, the University has grown tremendously, but its dedication to top-notch academics remains the same. From 12 students 215 years ago, Georgetown has swelled to include more than 6,000 undergraduates and a vast network of alumni. The very name, Georgetown University, has always called to mind an upper-echelon school, and rightfully so.

First of all, let me dispel a few myths. Not everyone at Georgetown wants to be president some day. True, there are those who have such an ambition, and a Georgetown education is certainly a good start. For the rest of us, Georgetown also has highly-respected programs in foreign service, business administration, nursing and health studies, and liberal arts majors like English or psychology. Georgetown has been affiliated with the Society of Jesus since its founding, but that means only as much as you want to make of it. The Jesuit influence exerts itself in a dedication to high standards, not in expectations of adopting Christian teachings. There is a theology requirement, but it can be fulfilled in many different ways. The Jesuits themselves are active and amazing teachers, and most students agree that they are some of the best teachers on campus.

It’s hard to paint an accurate picture of Georgetown through mere facts and statistics, so here’s my take on things: it’s big enough that you could never know the entire student body, yet small enough to ensure that you won’t walk for days without seeing a familiar face. Located in a residential area of DC, Georgetown has all the feel of a college-town school with all the opportunities afforded to a major metropolitan university.

I am going to try to give you an honest, well-rounded view of life at Georgetown. After that, the decision is yours. And trust me, it’s not an easy one. Go where you can see yourself being happy. For me, that was Georgetown. Maybe for you it will be the same.

Obtaining unbiased information on stocks you want to trade, much like getting an impartial mechanic to examine a prospective used car, could mean the difference between failure and success. In fact, claims Craig Gordon, head of a firm that specializes in independent data digging, methodical "market checking" actually "increases the chance of being right by 5 percent to 10 percent on the buy side and 15 percent to 20 percent when selling a stock." Whether those numbers are accurate or just hyperbolic, Gordon and financial journalist Stephen Kindel offer solid suggestions for gathering and assessing such real-world information in Off the Record. After some contextual discussion on traditional sources of investing info--company management, competitor management, Wall Street analysis, corporate and government reports--the book presents details of a consumer version of Gordon's commercial system. Encapsulated in easily understood steps like "Find the Experts" (via the 10 Rules of Marketplace Relations), "Finding the Unusual" (Seeing the Forest, the Trees, and the Path), and "Observe the Everyday" (Invest in What You Know), it outlines a credible method for tracking individual companies and their industries before news surfaces in the public domain. Diligently undertaken and combined with traditional research methods, it could indeed boost portfolio performance. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

A Wall Street maverick shows investors how to find the next Home Depot, Cisco, or Microsoft -- before the Wall Street establishment.

When it comes time to making a major purchasing decision -- a car or house, say -- most people will do their homework and find sources of independent information to help determine whether it's a good buy. The same is true when you face a serious medical decision. Would you rely on someone touting Dr. X's skills on a television show and then call up the good doctor to arrange for an operation? Not likely.

Then why don't we do the same kind of thorough kick-the-tires research when it comes to making investing decisions that will have a big impact on our financial future?

Many of us either don't know how or don't think we have the time. We rely instead on those we think are the experts -- the big brokerage houses, for example. But Craig Gordon has a little secret to share with you. Too many so-called investing experts don't do their homework either, making due with company announcements and meetings with management for their information and recommendations about whether to buy a stock. They're not doing marketplace checks and talking with customers, suppliers, and competitors to see what is really happening in the market.

By the time a stock is being touted by one of the big brokerage firms or stories start to circulate in the investing media, the game is over. What was a great value becomes overpriced and known by just about everyone. The secret to making money is to do it the old-fashioned way: take the pulse of the marketplace, gather data, and spot trends -- not by relying on tips and speculation.

Home Depot, not so long ago, was a mere four-store chain in Atlanta that started to expand into the Florida market. At the same time, the do-it-yourself trend was taking off, and those investors who had reliable information about the quality of Home Depot's management and the response by consumers to this new kind of store were able to make a lot of money -- much more money than those who waited until Home Depot was a household name and analysts were making enthusiastic predictions in the media.

There is a method to finding the next Home Depot, Cisco, or Microsoft. Craig Gordon shows you how to do it by sharing his secrets of profitable intelligence-gathering. He and his team at OTA-Off-the-Record Research have been turning up the trends and shifts in the marketplace before Wall Street even figures out what is going on. In fact, leading Wall Street firms hire him to tell them what is happening so they can decide what to buy or sell. Gordon's system is a method in the tradition of Beat the Street by Peter Lynch and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. And it's a method investors can use to get results that beat market averages.

By the time a stock is being touted by one of the big brokerage firms or talked up (or down) by the chattering class who fill the air waves of the financial journalism shows, the game is over. What was a great value becomes overpriced and known by just about everyone. The secret to making money in the market is to do it the old-fashioned way: taking the pulse of the marketplace, spotting trends, and gathering data -- not by relying on tips and speculation. For years Craig Gordon has been "kicking the tires" and doing homework for many of the most important firms on Wall Street. Now he shares his secrets of profitable intelligence gathering with the rest of us. We find out, for example, how he knew that the stock of Caterpillar, Inc. would fall in November 1999 or that the stock of Nokia was a great buy because of their new wireless handset product. In the tradition of Beat the Street by Peter Lynch and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, Off the Record provides a method investors can use to get results that beat market averages

Save yourself some money and buy One Up on Wall Street. Peter Lynch does a better job of explaing investing and using common sense. This OTA book is OK, but why spend the money when you can get a better book cheaper. A lot of this book talks about how his company informs the institutional investor and comes off as add for his company. His methods are good, but most people can not use them to the extent that is necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Detailed Instructions for Doing Fundamental Stock Analysis.......2001-07-23

Many investors focus their attention on Wall Street to find stock investing ideas. By reading what sell-side analysts have to say, what data services and newspapers provide, and looking at technical charts, they buy and sell securities. In Off the Record, you will learn how to move out of Wall Street to look at competitors, the marketplace served by companies, their managements, and unusual factors to locate the best stocks to buy and sell.

This book is based on the experiences of Craig Gordon in doing similar analysis for his firm, OTA/Off the Record Research. The purpose is "to give you -- the individual investor -- the skills to differentiate between whare are irrelevant and what are important, unique observations to help you buy or sell stocks." To do this, the book helps "you structure questions that confirm or dispute your investment thesis, to find useful sources to talk to, and to quickly interpret the information you gather." The drawback is that the process does "take a lot of effort." As a result, you are encouraged to pursue this process with other people, possibly including the members of an investment club.

The suggestions are solid. The details are helpful. You can make this work. Most institutional investors aren't paying attention to these factors, especially on smaller capitalization companies.

Let's be realistic though. Unless you really like doing this kind of detailed research, it will never happen. You will start, and soon slough off. That can be dangerous if you stop paying attention and a stock weakens. Since Mr. Gordon recommends that you take a concentrated position in a few stocks, you could get hurt in the process. Even if you keep it up, you may not be a very good analyst.

If you are an average investor, this is probably not a good program for you. The book should have put this concept into more of a context. It would be all right for a very small portion of your money, until you get a sense of how good you are at it over a number of years. Most people won't be very effective. For those people, I still recommend a bundle of low-cost indexed mutual funds. I graded the book down one star for this weakness.

On the other hand, if you always wanted to know more about how to follow Peter Lynch's advice and invest intelligently in what you know, this book will take you much further than you would have made it on your own. I do suggest that you use these methods to supplement whatever you do that has worked well for you over many years, rather than to use the book to totally replace your current methods. Keep in mind that a great company may be a lousy stock investment.

I completely agree with Mr. Gordon that the "research" coming out of Wall Street brokerage firms is weaker and more suspect than it has been in many years. Be careful!

After you finish reading this well-constructed set of thoughtful instructions, I suggest you think about where else people tend to leap in before looking hard enough. How could couples thinking about marriage better assess their future prospects together? How can you learn if a new diet will help your health without trying it? How can you make better decisions about what movies to see?

Learn to construct questions and seek sources to help you anticipate what will happen . . . it beats the school of hard knocks by a wide margin!

Introduction from the Author

Cornell’s reputation as a top-tier university precedes itself. With its proven track record in academic excellence, the University is at the forefront of education, and as an Ivy League, its character is deeply rooted in tradition. On its own accord, Cornell is pushing the envelope in many ways: providing its students with state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge computing technologies, and one of the most dedicated and stimulating faculty anywhere around. As a student, you will be provided with all of the resources you could possibly imagine to help you follow your interests and pursue your passion. You will encounter professors who are experts in their respective fields of study and read highly-acclaimed books that the professors have authored. In this sense, you will be certain to associate and interact with the best of the best.

In Cornell’s highly competitive and intense work environment, students are continually learning how to push themselves further, take initiative, and develop a work ethic vital to success after graduation. Students reap the rewards of the countless hours they put in as they steadily expand their intellectual capital. What establishes Cornell as one of the most dynamic universities consists of a combination of intangible aspects, including a sense of community and pride that really can’t be conveyed until you’re actually a student and can see for yourself. You’ll be sure to meet people from all over the globe, as you share Ithaca as a home and form closely knit bonds with students both very similar and very different from yourself. Your experiences here—academic, social, and extracurricular—will no doubt shape in part who you are, and your degree from Cornell will open countless doors for years to come.

My experience at Cornell has been an extremely rewarding one, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share all of the various facets of my education that made it so satisfying. Choosing a place where you intend to spend four seriously influential years of your life is not an easy decision. I hope this book will make your difficult choices a little easier and give you some color on the University in general and an idea of what life might be like as a Cornellian.

5 out of 5 stars College Prowler.......2007-05-17

This book is great and I'm buying more. Provides the negative as well as the postitve and ranks each section on a standardized scale that the authors use for each college so that comparisons can be made. Gives detailed information os many things that the school info does not take into account.

5 out of 5 stars Inside Scoop.......2006-11-11

College Prowler books are well worth the investment for students and parents investigating colleges. They give a detailed picture of the school, written from current students' perspectives. Once you have narrowed your list of schools to 10 or fewer, I would recommend buying the College Prowler titles for all of those. It's a small investment compared to the cost of visiting the campus, application fees, and -- of course -- TUITION!

5 out of 5 stars If you're apply to colleges this books is great!.......2005-01-13

College Prowler books are stupendous for helping you with your college search. The Cornell University guidebook is especially great if you are considering applying to Cornell, if you have already been accepted, or if you would like to compare it to other Ivy League schools. It is even a good resource if you are visiting the school, as it contains tour information, addresses and recommendations for restaurants, and information on places to visit in the surrounding community. As for the school itself, the Cornell College Prowler book considers subjects admissions officers would never tell you about like what the drug scene is, how the parties are, and even if the population is hot! It also gives you the down and dirty on academics, stress, professors, and more. It's a great resource and a small price to pay for having piece of mind on your school of choice.

5 out of 5 stars Like a strong cup of coffee.......2004-12-14

Some people get up in the morning and are ready to go; the rest of us, on the other hand, need something to get us going, a jolt to the CNS, maybe a swift kick in the pants, before we can drag ourselves out the door and into the harsh early-afternoon light. Ms. Huang's book about Berkeley is just the sort of existential amphetamine from which most could draw the motivation to step outside the half-mile triangle connecting the dorm room to the Super DC to Moffit and back again and into the wider world that is Berzerkeley. With the seasoned eye of a genuine five-year Berkeley veteran and a hearty prose so rare in today's guide book, she paints an exhilerating picture of Berkeley that could get even the most anemic computer science major's heart pounding. Be it where to get the best pizza, how to trick your GSI's into liking you so you can get extensions when you need them, or the best times to go swimming in the Sproul fountain, this book includes everything the average myopic student needs to live it up and keep their days blogworthy.

    Book Description

OFF THE RECORD is an "all access" collection of bizarre and funny back stories of the many entertainers and athletes the author has covered since starting at NEWSWEEK eleven years ago. Her start at the magazine happened at a time when African American culture, particularly hip hop, had taken center stage in the national spotlight. And because of the mainstream media's lack of knowledge of this world, she was able to carve out a nice and unprecedented niche for a mainstream newsweekly with complete access to the some of the most dominant names in hip hop, sports, television and film.

The book will begin with her early days in entertainment, which included stints with director/producer/actor Robert Townsend, and music mogul Quincy Jones and in CAA's infamous agent training program. Her time at CAA provided her with an inside glimpse into the lives of top–tier celebrities and the world that is often created to satisfy them. From personally blowing up 200 dinosaurs for the lobby when Steven Spielberg made a quick visit to the offices to picking up Ted Danson's half–million dollar check every week, there was no chore too big. But these humble beginnings gave her access to Hollywood's A–list and she eventually focuses on the world of black entertainers. With humor and insight, she will reveal the inner workings of their private lives––with anecdotes on everyone from Snoop Dogg to Shaquille O'Neal, from Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy to Whitney Houston.

The ediors were right when they said the book was superficial but that doesn't me it's not enjoyable. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Allison, You Go Girl!.......2007-04-07

Allison is an excellent writer! I like the way she shared information on the top stars. The information was mostly positive and she kept the audience interest. We all don't have to read negative information about stars to enjoy a great book. In fact, I was more fascinated about the author's early career. Allison wrote about the sentimental side of each star.

4 out of 5 stars An Insider's Look into American Pop Culture.......2007-02-11

Written by Allison Samuels, Newsweek magazine's longtime entertainment reporter, OFF THE RECORD is a compilation of personality profiles of African-American celebrities, including musicians, athletes, actors and other icons. Recommended to anyone interested in pop culture, this book reads like a magazine. Most chapters are relatively short articles that focus on two or three similar personalities, though some chapters are much longer and are dedicated to the exploration of one major cultural icon.

A fearless writer, unafraid to take a jab or two at the mighty and the dangerously sensitive, Samuels uses her 13 years of experience covering the entertainment industry to reveal the surprisingly contradictory personality traits of her subjects. Here you will read about

    How the late rapper Tupac Shakur was transformed from an ambitious, sweet, well-read, former ballet dancer to frightening thug, once he was recruited by record executive, Marion "Suge" Knight;

    How NBA all-star Kobe Bryant immaturely alienated himself from his Lakers teammates and in the process destroyed his own reputation and his relationship with Shaquille O'Neal by foolishly believing he did not need the guidance and advice of NBA veterans;

How actress Halle Berry offended Whoopi Goldberg when she tearfully accepted her Oscar win for best actress without acknowledging the African-American women who had won before her, including Hattie McDaniel and Goldberg; and

How Mike Tyson is extraordinarily generous, perhaps because as the author notes it is his way of coping "in a world that had not given him very much in the way of kindness or sympathy."

Plus there are other fascinating profiles of Angela Bassett, Denzel Washington, Dr. Dre, Snopp Dogg, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Ray Lewis, Allen Iverson, Tyra Banks, Lil' Kim, Suge Knight, Coretta Scott King and Malcolm Shabazz.
