very nice gift.......2007-05-15
I have no idea about playing guitar. I bought this book as a gift for my nephew. He wanted me to order especially this (well known) book and said that it is very useful. Now he is very happy and he uses it a lot.
Excellent Series.......2007-01-14
The Troy Stetina series is definitely the best instruction books series you can find today. It is well-explained, you get great exercises and songs to play and you gradually feel your skills increasing. Highly recommended.
As much fun as you can have while practicing........2006-05-25
This is an excellant guitar instructional that teaches the metal style of guitar. The book has six solos and various exercises to help prepare you to play these solos. The audio is split so you can play or record over the backing tracks. the solos are all top notch and if you nail them people will think you are a lot better than you really are (and if your trying to play metal shred guitar dont try and tell me your not at least partially concerned with impressing people). He also did a very good job with progessivley pacing the technical difficulty so you are never too frustrated. This is a great book and if you seriously devote time to it you will become a better and faster player.
Ignore the comment below that this book is easy or for beginners. It is relatively challenging and even if it was to easy for you there is a follow up book Metal Lead II that would cause Malmsteen himself to break a sweat.
Awesome Stuff .......2006-04-12
This book rules - no other way to put it . I've been playing guitar for 5 years - no other book I've seen provides this thorough grounding in fundamental technique as applicable to metal - after a mere 2 months of serious practise ( 1 hr per day ) my playing rose by SEVERAL levels - with regard to speed / control and just plain and simple playing stuff that sounds good.
Highly Recommended
Dissapointing.......2004-12-26
I must say I've only been playing guitar for a little over two years. This book has not been helpful to me in any way. The other reviews about needing about 1 year of is experience are wrong, I could have pulled this off easily right away, because the book moves at such a slow pace anyway. This book will only teach you the basic pentatonic and minor scales, I wouldn't recommend it for a player with a lot of experience, but it would be a great book for beginners! *Note: Do not get this book if you have an acoustic guitar, and not an electric!*

Customer Reviews:
HUH!!!.......2007-05-03
If your a collector than this tab book is good for you. If you wanna learn how to play some Dime tunes than DON'T GET THIS BOOK! It has the wrong tabs for "Walk". Common now. I'm really dissapointed. The band Pictures are cool though. What I'm saying is... I should have read the reviews!
I thought it was just me.......2003-01-28
I agree with the guy from the UK when he says this was the worst he ever owned. I'm sorry, but the numerical displacement on even the simplest chords was hard enough to decipher. Instead of trying to read the tab, i almost always had to rewrite the tab using a word processor before the tablature became clear enough for me to read. I really can't say that it is wrong, because when i did rewrite/decipher/copy some tab, it was correct. The solo for "This Love", on the other hand, was hardly worth printing. As the author explains, "unlike other songs, intricate fast licks are not presented here. However, play it with emotion while making good use of the wah-wah pedal." This quote, straight from the book, shows that apparently, "good use of the wah-wah" can make up for a lot that was simply not shown. You want to at least not waste time figuring out stuff like that when you spend 25 bucks on a official tab book. (I know it's much cheaper here, but it's what i payed). And, on a good note, this book has some of the most awesome pictures of PanterA in it i've ever seen. the pictures are pretty cool. And finally, this book got the three stars because of it's transcription of "Mouth For War", possibly worth the price of the book itself. A necessity for PanterA fans out there and those like them.
worst tab book i've ever owned.......2002-04-07
i've been playing guitar for about ten years and have owned many tab books in that time of which this is certainly the worst.
to start with the tab is actually different to previous published copies which i own, and in places just appears to be wrong. some of the solos for example have been tabed to run over several strings when it is just played on one, making the actual music more difficult to play and disjointed, this difference in positioning appears frequently throughout the book.
it is also written in a non standard format with different notations and fonts unlike anything i have experienced before and this makes it confusing in places and occasionally difficult to distinguish which strings the notes are supposed to be played on. the bass and drum tabs are also mixed in which doesn't make it any clearer, but at least you get more value for money which i can say is the only redeaming feature.
the forewords at the start of each song are usually increadably obvious (the use of palm muting and distortion, like you dont know that already if your in to pantera!) and in places uninformative.
the songs are in alphabetical order not as they are arranged on the respective albums so you have to look up the page number to find the song you want.
the book leaves out some of the best and most difficult songs on both albums (regular people, medicine man, rise, etc)and retains simplistic songs like ... hostile.
pantera are one of my favourite bands and this book is far inferior to previous publications, its more like its been written by a 15 year old for his school project than someone who actually knows what they're doing. at its price its only worth it if you are really desperate and cant get hold of the proper tab anywhere else. i found the standard of this tab to be poor and unacceptable and i sent it back for a refund, which i have not regretted.
a waste of money and an injustice to the music.
Power selection.......2000-12-31
A very well explained book, includes transcription of guitar, plus drums, bass vocal and some other sounds that may appear. Includes comments on every song about the rhytms, weird sounds, vocals, all!
Serious music to listen and play, this book gets all the power in Pantera which sound is best explained by a description they share with no other band: Power Groove (heavy, riff-oriented feel).
You won't regret getting this!

play guitar with ac/dc.......2007-01-18
I bought it for my son and he was playing it within hours and he is just a beginner! Good product!
Good Tablature Book if Anything.......2006-08-08
The concept of this product is great but, it doesnt live up to the hype. There is supposed to be no lead guitar on the background tracks yet a lead is audible on many of the tracks. I can just use an AC/DC CD for that. It is fun to play with but, not what I thought it would be. If you can get it used for under $10 bucks, go for it.
If you like early Brian Johnson tunes, You'll like this..........2006-02-01
Good book and companion CD. I like earlier AC\DC stuff with B. Scott but these songs are good too. I remember hearing these songs for the first time in junior high school back in 1980! Who needs a band anyway. Just crank up the CD and jamm along...
QC problem.......2004-08-19
My only complain is that the track 1 and 7 are the same (Back in Black). The 7 should have the lead guitar removed. It seems a QC problem.
But the sund quality is ok and the tabs are Ok.
A must buy for AC/DC fans!.......2004-04-10
I bought this book and cd from Amazon.com because I always wanted to play AC/DC songs on the guitar. The book has both tabulature and standard notation for you to read so you can play. The book explains how to read them and other symbols used in the music. Tabulature is very easy to understand, but if the book does not explain it well enough for you, go to www.olga.net for more information on how to read tab. The book also has the lyrics to all the songs. The CD has each song in the book with out lyrics, and then has the songs again but without the lead guitar so you can play as the lead guitarist. I suggest that anyone that has a guitar and is an AC/DC fan should get this book and CD.
Book Description

Starts with simple upbeat rhythms for the beginner and moves step by step into advanced syncopations - all demonstrated with seriously heavy metal examples that have practical applications to today's styles. Tablature. Music and examples demonstrated on CD.

Great Book on Heavy Metal.......2007-09-09
I am a music teacher. I was looking for a book that will teach young adults a method of playing heavy metal music. This is the book I would recommend. My students are enjoying the simple exercises and the play along cd.
Troy Stetina rules!.......2007-08-12
Of the 30 or so guitar method books I own, the Troy Stetina collection is by far the most useful. His method is somewhat similar to the musicians institute series of instruction, except that his series tends to focus on a particular style of music rather than just general learning. This particular book is great as it is progressive. Start at the beginning of the book and work your way through at your own pace. That's it -- easy schmeezy lemon squeezy. Also, buy a metronome and you'll get even more out of it.
An excellent book for teachers.......2007-06-29
I have played guitar for over 12 years. I have recently begun teaching private lessons. I try to teach such that the information I give relates personally to each student. Everyone learns differently and has different tastes.
I recently purchased Troy Stetina's book, Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol. 1, for a few of my students who are interested in studying heavy metal. I have to say, this book is excellent. It starts from the very beginning, teaching how to play powerchords. Troy's notation is excellent, incorporating counting techniques into his TAB.
I find as a teacher that it is essential to get your students playing something cool from the beginning. Otherwise, they lose interest. This book has been a great resource to help my heavy metal students start rocking almost from the first lesson.
Excellent job Troy, keep it up.
-Craig Nybo, author of Total Human: The Complete Strength Training System
The best series for learning Metal or Rock Rhythm. Period!.......2007-06-20
If you are a beginner who wants to learn how to play metal or even rock then this is for you. The book is all in Tabs, so if you can't read standard notation or do not want to learn than this will speed up the learning process for you. Troy takes you through a series of exercises which eventually lead to a real song that you will get to play. The book and CD work together and you definatley need the CD to understand how to play. If you are a guitar teacher this is a great tool to help you teach your students about metal guitar. I have used this book for myself for over 15 years. Now that I teach guitar I use it with my students with great results. The play along CD is of the highest quality and you will enjoy playing along for hours. I reccomend this book and all of Troy's guitar books. Well Done Troy!!!!!!!!!
Really works for beginners!!!.......2007-06-11
Excellent for beginners, even for absolute beginners, who want to play heavy metal or hard rock. Troy Stetina is one of the best teachers you can find.
It is a real method to learn guitar technique 'from the beginning', not only exercises compilation. Well structurated, topics are explained clearly and you learn easily and enjoy at the same time. You see your improvement every week so you want to learn more. It really works!
It contains lots of examples, basic theory and technique topics, and six full songs to practice and enjoy playing rhythm guitar track with the backing band on CD.
I liked this so much that I bought the complete Troy Stetina's Series. I've learned faster and easier with Troy's books than with other famous players' books.
For beginners I recommend to take a lead guitar method like Metal Lead Guitar Primer when starting chapter 4.

BAD PURCAHSE.......2004-04-09
This book contains too many incorrect errors and sloppy made tabs that arnt even close to the way they are played!
Who made who is played in C,A,G...NOT D,C,A like this book shows.......I dont even know what they have tabbed as the solo for Whole Lotta Rosie.. but trust me its 100% wrong!!!!!
dont pay more then $5 for this book, because theres not much to be learnt from inccorect tabbing!
A Triumphant Tome for those who love Angus Young's Chops!.......2000-10-08
This book is an absolute must-have for anyone who plays the guitar and loves the timeless music of AC/DC. The songs transcribed are true classics and the arrangements are predominantly note-by-note accurate. Granted, most mere mortals don't possess the speed or technical abilities of Angus Young, the incomparable lead guitarist, or his rythem-playing brother, Malcolm, but with perseverance and practice, this book will bring many hours of smiles and maximum riffing. A hearty Angus fist up to this book!

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2004-07-27
This was also my first. It is a great book to learn from. I gained more knowledge from this book than I ever could have from a teacher. It covers different styles from textured melodies (Soma) to all out rock (Geek U.S.A - wanna learn a pentaconic scale?). Aside from the much lauded teaching abilities, this book faithfully reproduces every song from the album for a live performance of 2-4 guitars. It is wonderful. Get this and the album for your son or daughter that are just starting to get into playing music. The musical score included with the tabs also makes for a fun time with a piano and other instruments the book wasn't intended for.
MY FIRST AND BEST.......2002-10-07
This was my first guitar book, but by far the best one I've had. It's especially great to learn to play anything since Billy used so many basic chords and progressions. In all, it teaches some invaluable guitar lessons.
another great album.......2001-11-30
In my personal opinion, I think this album is one of their best. The lyrics take you away, almost acting as a requiem. It;s very good kick back music, as well suitable for parties and what not. I think this is the only cool band my parents actually listen to. :)
The Pumpkins' Siamese Dream guitar tab book is very cool........1999-02-15
I got this book when I first started playing the guitar. It is VERY helpful and I strongly recomend it. Billy Corgan's advice on playing the songs is great. All in all, this is one of the best guitar tabs money can buy.
Siamse dream a great book for a great band.......1998-12-23
I have this book and let me tell you its worth it. It is complete with all tabs and and intro of the band. It also icludes tips on how they reproduce the songs live. Itis real helpful and complete
