Product Description
This collection of jazz standard chord solos for guitar is compiled from Mel Bay and Warner Bros. collaborations Jazz Guitar Standards Vol. 1 and 2. What makes this work so special is that each artist has personally recorded their solo guitar arrangement. The book comes with the CDs which have all 44 tunes. This book is a wonderful anthology of solo guitar that can be used for performances as well as educational purposes.

Standards made easy........2007-06-05
This book clearly gives a starting point for jazz standards that are needed in any player's repertoire. Of course knowledge of music helps, but the material is easy to understand. It covers the chords, melody, and with the 2 cds it provides ideas for improv. A virtual mountain of information any guitarist can benefit from. Just what the doctor ordered.
Excellent chord progression book.......2007-04-05
I received this book, I bought because I'm learning jazz music, I'm really satisfied with the book it has excellent jazz chord progressions used in the music solos, we can use to practice in companion of the CDs, Melodies interpretation are excellent too.
Arrangements are professional and entertaining. Not instructional........2007-03-04
I've worked through 3 of the songs in this book - My Funny Valentine, Body and Soul, and How High The Moon. It took a while but they sound great. The arrangers are top notch jazz guitar professionals and don't water it down to make it easy. There is TAB which helps in the fingerings, which are sometimes a large stretch, especially GIT instructor Sid Jacobs who prefers closed voicings. So a lot of these songs are going to give your left hand a workout in both the chords and movement of the melody line on top. The recordings on the CD are helpful to get the song's inflections and dynamics, something the printed music can't do. The song selection is ballad heavy and there is not much at all for uptempo swing or anything progressive, all songs are laid back.
Some of the recorded tracks on the CD are poor quality and sound as if they were re-sampled on a computer and slowed down at the discretion of the book's editor. I also wished the arrangments were presented in order of difficulty rather than a random compilation of the jazz guitarists individual song contribution. It's nice to see books like this out there with TAB and CD recordings, but I hope in the future a book like this will come along with some forethought into presenting material in a method format, rather than entertainment format. A method book would explain the reasoning behind the melodic lines and chord voicings and would explain in detail how to do the arranging of standards yourself.
Another thing Mel Bay is notorious for is taking material from one book and putting in in another and slapping on a different cover - this book is a prime example. Everything here was extracted from the chord melody section of the 2 volume Mel Bay series called Jazz Guitar Standards I & II. Neither of these 2 books in the series come with a CD which is unfortunate as that would have been very helpful, so here you get to listen and be entertained by recognized jazz chord melody specialists. And the book is spiral bound - that alone boosts the rating.
Wonderful!.......2006-09-04
If you want to learn jazz classic standards in chord- melody style this is a great tool! There's no problem if you can't read music (Tab+cd). Dont miss it!
Very good tool for learning and playing chord melodies.......2006-07-28
This book is jam packed with jazz standards. Surely, anyone with a heart for jazz and chord melodies would find something in this book they like to play. And the CDs (two of them) are great. All 20 songs played by professionals on the CDs. Its worth the money just for listening to the songs on the CD.
The arrangements with notation and tabulature are not hard for intermediate to advanced players. My only recommendation would be to have the artist give a brief tutorial for each song working through some of the more difficult passages. Fingerings are sometimes tricky and a little help with transitions would be beneficial. If you're going to buy this book as a course, you're on your own to figure out how to play the songs. However if you are taking lessons, a good teacher could walk you through some of the tough parts.
I give it an overall B+ for a couse book and an A+ for entertainment value.
Book Description
An in-depth approach to mastering arpeggios for guitarists, beginning with simple arpeggio studies, this book progresses through simple concepts and tunes then proceeds to tackle some of the great standards that jazz musicians play. The lesson concludes with advanced arpeggio concepts including super-imposition of unusual arpeggios over various chord types to create startling tonal clusters. This is a must-have for all serious guitarists who want to achieve great technique while developing their sense of harmony. Companion CD included.

40 pages of arpeggios.......2007-03-30
You get 40 pages of arpeggios in this book. I thought I was getting at least 180 pages of text, but I was wrong. Not to worry. You get a short workout while following each note in each arpeggio. After a while, you end up learning how to solo over each chord in a standard -- similar to John Coltrane. John Coltrane was known for soloing using a unique scale pattern per chord. This book helps you learn how to form each scale pattern per chord. Of course, you could also solo over the key of the song. I find soloing over each chord more melodic. It's up to you.
So, get this book if you're looking to learn how to improve on your melodic solos, but remember, there are only 40 pages in this book --- 4 stars!!!!!
average content.......2007-03-19
this book doesnt contain the amount of information that you might expect. If you have no idea about apreggios then you will learn somthing from it however if you already have a basic knowledge of arpeggios this book wont be very helpful.it does howveer have a few nice superimposing ideas but nothing spectacular.overall i was dissapointed with the book and could of obtained the information from the web . chord arpeggio shapes arnt hard to come across.the book includes a cd but there are no backing tracks to practice your arpeggios
Great arpeggio method.......2007-01-03
I own a lot of jazz methods and I would rate this one near the top in terms of usefulness. Besides relating the arps to chord types this method gives many examples of how to apply them along with very thorough analysis of application.
I highly recommend this book to those learning how to use arpeggios & chromatics to create interesting solos.
good arpeggio specific study.......2006-07-20
This book is definitly a great resource on arpeggios and working them into your playing. It focuses on jazz, as the title suggests. First Mimi shows you a couple simple arpeggio examples and shapes, and then a few examples of ways to practice them over progressions. After that she gives you a few reference pages of all the arpeggio shapes you'd need. These reference pages are great. They have the chord inversions imposed on each arpeggio shape so you can easily see how they work together and easily match them up. So it incidently kinda helps you review chord inversions and drop 2 voicings.
After the reference pages, the arpeggio study section starts. The tunes are bases off real standards (summertime, night and day, all the things you are, etc). The arpeggio studies involve playing the proper arpeggio for each chord throughout the whole tune. She gives examples of how she does it and then provides an explaination of what she's doing in each bar and why. For example, she explains some substitutions she likes and such.
The book comes with a CD of Mimi playing each example. It's good to hear the examples played, but really not a necessity. It would have been more helpful if the studies had just the background rhythm/chords so you can practice playing arpeggios over them...rather than it having her arpeggios played over it. I've been entering the chords into Band In A Box and using that as a play-a-long to practice playing arepggios to.
There's an advanced section after the studies that I haven't gotten to yet, but she provides substitution ideas and things she likes to do with arpeggios.
Overall, this book is very helpful and covers the subject matter. I bought this book in the hopes that going through it would help get arpeggios into my playing, and so far by working on these studies it is definitly helping me learn the arpeggios by applying them. This book will probably always stick around for me because of the arpeggio/chord inversion references pages are useful.
Solid techniques for playing over jazz changes.......2004-09-24
This book is fantastic. If you are like me, you probably learned how to play guitar to pop songs. You learned chords and scales, and took a modal approach to solo instrumentals... then you try to play something progressive, and you realize that you're fairly limited: how do they do that?
This breaks the chain of confusion and gets you oriented to any number of jazz chord changes by learning arpeggios from the chords themselves. You can then "play the changes" for real; not having to hang onto some fixed scale or pattern (which gets boring to the listener). This has pop / rock / blues applications too (e.g. sweep picking uses arpeggios). I highly recommend this book as a kind of Rosetta Stone for the aspiring jazz / advanced improviser. I took a ten week course with Mimi before she wrote this book, and this book truly distills the main learning points that we all found so difficult to comprehend. With the CD, you can practice anytime, and you won't have to test Mimi's patience! I am so glad she wrote this book.

Nearly Perfect For New Students Of Jazz.......2007-05-24
For newcommers to the vocal jazz scene, this is a great compilation. The songs are some of the most loved ever, and the optional CD is well worth the money for practicing and performing. This book is written with the popular chord notation, and only the melody line, which is the traditional notation for jazz. This will not help the pianist unless they can read popular chord symbols. The only thing I would have liked to see is more songs, or a second... and third book.
Finally, songs published in the right keys.......2005-10-31
This whole series of 3 (Jazz Standards, Jazz Ballads, and Jazz Tracks) books is terrific. The Cd can be very helpful, as well. I recommend it to all my singers. The book "Singer's Book of Jazz Standards" combines all 3, less the Cd's. A must for all accompanists! Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
Great for good pianists wanting to play Jazz.......2005-10-06
I play bass in a Jazz trio with a piano player who was Classically trained. Her sightreeading chops are outstanding, but her Jazz instincts are non-existence. These arrangements give her the ability to play Jazz with us, all the while giving her experience in playing Jazz. Already her improv skills are improving and her swing feel is strong. Good book.
A decent Jazz compilation for the Intermediate Jazz pianist.......2001-07-10
Some of the more popular tunes in this compilation are A night in Tunisia, Satin Doll, Sophisticated Lady and All the things you are. Missing out on classics like Take the A-train in lieu of several rather obscure tunes that aren't exactly Jazz standards, by my measure, is the book's greatest flaw. For the beginning to intermediate jazz student, its a nice book to own. All the songs are full arrangements and not too difficult to play. Advanced pianists will probably be happier with a nice, solid fakebook.
The Best Jazz Standards Ever.......2000-05-08
This is a good collection of some famous Jazz tunes, it does also have some less well known songs. This means you can play/sing your favourites and still enlarge your repetoire. Guitar chords are provided as well as the piano part and the vocal line with lyrics. There are some songs that I feel aren't strictly Jazz, though this can be taken that one can adapt more than the obvious songs.
