Book Description
Now in paperback, Journals includes never-before-seen material that will keep everyone talking.
Kurt Cobain filled dozens of notebooks with lyrics, drawings, and writings about his plans for Nirvana and his thoughts about fame, the state of music, and the people who bought and sold him and his music. His journals reveal an artist who loved music, who knew the history of rock, and who was determined to define his place in that history. Here is a mesmerizing, incomparable portrait of the most influential musician of his time.
Customer Reviews:
Not a revelation.......2007-09-12
I was expecting to get some sort of mystical revelation from this book, to get really deep into the psyche of Kurt Cobain, to see the tortured artist at his most artistically tortured. Unfortunately, I was let down.
This book is just a smattering of photoscans from Kurt Cobain's various journals he kept throughout the years. It is by no means complete or even coherent in it's selection of material. The book jumps around from here to there, giving random short stories, drawings, lyrics, ideas for recording, letters to various people, etc., etc. And I will admit, some of it is interesting to read, especially during the years where Nirvana was at it's peak of popularity. But it's not satisfying; in fact, I found it frustrating. Everything is so jumpy and choppy that you can't really appreciate the context of the journal entry, and much of the time it's so random that even if you did know the context, it wouldn't help much. I'll give the book one thing, though: it is roughly in chronological order. Even so, it's hard to follow at times.
I would have liked to have seen a book more in the vein of other artist's journals, where you get a more complete selection of journal entries. I don't feel as though I learned anything about Kurt Cobain, or got any insight into his art, or sensed any of his deepening depression as he neared his death. If I'm going to read an artist's journals, it's to come away with a revelation about them as artists and as people. "Journals" offers little, I think. It is so heavily selective with what it includes that it only gives very small glimpses into Kurt's mind. If you want to read it, I would suggest getting it from the library first, just to see what you think.
I hope a more comprehensive (and hopefully typed) collection of Kurt Cobain's journals come out one day, so that we can get a really clear view of Kurt's creative genius and emotional turmoil at work.
Shocking.......2007-06-12
There's no words to describe the handwrited notes and draws by Kurt. Simply, shocking...
Is the book that every shrink need to have to understand adolescent behaviours.
Better to burn out than fade away.......2007-04-02
Kurt Cobain was a talented and tortured artist that had a tremendous impact on my life. His songs, more specifically, his poems, really inspired me to write as well and publish my first book.
So when I first heard about this book, I was immediately drawn to it. I had strong feelings of interest beset by a sense of respect for him as a person. I wondered if reading his personal journals would be kind of like trespassing, an invasion of privacy, something Kurt would be offended by.
But Kurt invites all fans and critics to go ahead and probe around to try to figure him out. So, with hesitation, I embarked on this journey, completely drawn into the mind of my favorite true artist.
Anyone who can appreciate art might be intrigued by this book. It's a lot of scattered thoughts, eloquent poems, random and bizzare drawings--just Kurt pouring his heart out on paper.
Kurt's humor and sarcasm are embedded throughout this book. Many people find so much meaning in every single statement, plus any depressing thought captured is viewed as foreshadowing. C'mon people.
Everything in this book encapsulates some emotion we all have felt. People overanalyzing every single scribble of pencil or pen is a complete joke that I'm sure Kurt finds humorous.
Anyways, this collection of journals just adds to the mysticism of Kurt's life and "suicide". Some questions are better left unanswered.
Journals by Kurt Cobain.......2007-02-09
I was deeply saddened by Kurt's death all those years ago - it really affected me even though I didn't know him but I thought I did. I wish I didn't buy this book, as now I am completely dissallousioned. He was a tortured sole and it really disturbed me. I wish that I could have just remembered all the great songs he wrote.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind.
A Must Read.......2006-07-23
When this book came out, I read the whole thing in an hour in the bookstore. I couldnt put it down.
Many people think that it is wrong to publish this, and while it was done without Kurts permission, I think that in the end this is the ultimate keystone to his art and his life. Ultimately I think Kurt valued art above all and he would want this to be released because of its art value. Nirvana was a great band because they reestablished the ethic of raw do it yourself art is everything realness. That is why Nevermind destroyed the entire hairmetal crap on MTV at the time. People could see that. People knew how good Nirvana was. And the reason why his journals are so wonderful is because it is the most Raw form of Kurts thought that is out there. Non produced, stripped down and completely self examining. Kurts honesty is ultimately what i think killed him. His soul was just too strong for his body. However his honesty was ultimately the reason why he was one of the best songwriters that has ever lived. He had the ability to look himself in the eye and into his own heart. Doing that hurts a lot. This book not only helps art as a whole, but it helps to understand people with depression, and to understand the heart of a true artist.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The art of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was all about his private life, but written in a code as obscure as T.S. Eliot's. Now Charles Cross has cracked the code in the definitive biography Heavier Than Heaven, an all-access pass to Cobain's heart and mind. It reveals many secrets, thanks to 400-plus interviews, and even quotes Cobain's diaries and suicide notes and reveals an unreleased Nirvana masterpiece. At last we know how he created, how lies helped him die, how his family and love life entwined his art--plus, what the heck "Smells Like Teen Spirit" really means. (It was graffiti by Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna after a double date with Dave Grohl, Cobain, and the "over-bored and self-assured" Tobi Vail, who wore Teen Spirit perfume; Hanna wrote it to taunt the emotionally clingy Cobain for wearing Vail's scent after sex--a violation of the no-strings-attached dating ethos of the Olympia, Washington, "outcast teen" underground. Cobain's stomach-churning passion for Vail erupted in six or so hit tunes like "Aneurysm" and "Drain You.")
Cross uncovers plenty of news, mostly grim and gripping. As a teen, Cobain said he had "suicide genes," and his clan was peculiarly defiant: one of his suicidal relatives stabbed his own belly in front of his family, then ripped apart the wound in the hospital. Cobain was contradictory: a sweet, popular teen athlete and sinister berserker, a kid who rescued injured pigeons and laughingly killed a cat, a talented yet astoundingly morbid visual artist. He grew up to be a millionaire who slept in cars (and stole one), a fiercely loyal man who ruthlessly screwed his oldest, best friends. In fact, his essence was contradictions barely contained. Cross, the coauthor of Nevermind: Nirvana, the definitive book about the making of the classic album, puts numerous Cobain-generated myths to rest. (Cobain never lived under a bridge--that Aberdeen bridge immortalized in the 12th song on Nevermind was a tidal slough, so nobody could sleep under it.) He gives the fullest account yet of what it was like to be, or love, Kurt Cobain. Heavier Than Heaven outshines the also indispensable Come As You Are. It's the deepest book about pop's darkest falling star. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
This is the first in-depth biography of the troubled genius Kurt Cobain. Based on exclusive access to Cobains unpublished diaries, more than 400 interviews, four years of research, and a wealth of documentation, Heavier Than Heaven traces Cobains life from his early days in a double-wide trailer outside of Aberdeen, Washington, to his rise to fame, fortune, and the adulation of a generation.

one of the better rock bio's i've read........2007-03-26
rock biographies are not the genre in which to find great literature. seldom are they anything special. this one is pretty darn good, though. charles r. cross sets a high standard, with a complex portrait of this troubled rock genius. this is no hero worship account. kurt cobain is portrayed as the exasperating, contradictory person he know doubt was. warts and genius are juxtaposed here. a tale of cobain's rise from very ordinary beginnings to his ulimate self-destruction at the top of rock and roll's ladder. the narrative is well paced and the journalistic writing style fine. a very very good piece of work. charles r. cross has done nirvana fans a service.
Pages of Lies.......2007-03-25
This book is page after page of lies. This is what Courtney Love wants you to think, not what actually happened. Do yourself a favor, buy Love & Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain, and Who Killed Kurt Cobain? The Mysterious Death of an Icon, instead.
dont be so blind.........2007-03-25
i have to say this book is totally unrealistic and is full of incorrect information about Kurt. this book is how Courtney wants the world to view him so everyone buys into the fact that he commited suicide. kurt was more than what he is depicted to be in this book, which is supposed to be factual, but is definitely not. If you want the real deal and the facts surrounding kurts MURDER read the book Love and Death...now that book has something worth reading.. THE TRUTH
From the mouth of Courtney Love.......2007-01-22
This is a biography of Kurt Cobain as Courtney Love wants it to be.

Book Description
A chilling, groundbreaking investigation into the death of one of the great rock icons of our times -- including exclusive access to the case tapes of Courtney Love's former P.I., and a host of compelling new evidence.
On Friday, April 8, 1994, a body was discovered in a room above a garage in Seattle. For the attending authorities, it was an open-and-shut case of suicide. What no one knew then, however, is that the deceased -- Kurt Cobain, the superstar frontman of Nirvana -- had been murdered. Drawing on case tapes made by a P.I. hired by Courtney Love when her husband escaped from drug rehab and went missing -- and on new forensic evidence and police reports obtained under the Freedom of Information Act -- Love & Death explodes the long-standing theory that Kurt Cobain took his own life.
Award-winning investigative journalists Max Wallace and Ian Halperin have conducted a ten-year crusade for the truth, and in Love & Death they present a stunning, convincing argument that the whole truth has yet to be revealed.

courtney is a murderer!!.......2007-08-17
first of all, this is the most cleverly titled book ive ever read lol. before i read the book i had looked up some of the kurt cobain murder conspiracy websites, and i have to say i was not convinced. however, after reading this book, all i can say is wow. there is no way kurt pulled that trigger. the evidence in this book alone is enough to charge courtney love with conspiracy to commit murder. and to think there is even more incriminating evidence that will only be released once the case is reopened!! it really hurts me to think that the sapd refuses to reopen this case and justify the death of such a beloved rock hero as kurt cobain just because they dont want to admit they were wrong. i think every member of the sapd needs to read this book, and then maybe they will realize that this was not at all a suicide. all we can do is pray that someday justice will be served.... overall, this is the best book purchase that i have ever made, and i am now thoroughly convinced that what happened to kurt was in no way at all self-inflicted
VERY GOOD BOOK.......2007-08-17
This is a VERY good book! I am a HUGE Nirvana/Kurt Cobain fan. This book is very well written and I couldn't put it down! This book is for anyone trying to figure out if his death was suicide or murder. It's for any Kurt Cobain fan!
Wow..........2007-07-30
If I ever see Courtney Love, it'll be really hard not to punch her in the throat.
Just another review........2006-07-01
When I first learned about the case, I was sure of it to be murder. I read this book, and my feelings were confirmed even stronger. This book examines things very well and digs deep under the surface. It makes the murder case even stronger. I decided to read it again, a little less thank a year after the first time. Although upon completion, I felt differently. I don't know what caused it, but my veiws on the subject completely changed. I no longer blamed Courtney. I no longer went on believing something that had yet to be proven. I'm much happier now that I'm no longer ignorant enough to blame someone for something that hasn't been deemed true. I feel I owe that to this book for whatever reason it might be.
It's not THAT bad, people.........2006-01-22
I've read books a thousand times more boring than this one. But I noticed a lot of people talking about the title and that it's misleading.. OK... LOVE AND DEATH. That's just a plain and not very original statement. I don't see a question there... The Murder of Kurt Cobain. Again, NO BLOODY QUESTION THERE. So, stop your bickering, there's no question! The cover has NO QUESTIONS on it... All it sells is extra clues and stuff to the investigation. So, with that cleared up...
The book isn't bad and is written decently if not well. Maybe reading Harry Potter was oodles of fun, but this isn't a fiction story. You have to prepare for it like you would for a history chapter back in 8th grade. This book isn't selling fairy tales, people.. It's selling a bloody theory. And theory doesn't equal to fact, either. It's the same thing Charles Darwin had to go through to get his theory bothered with. He needed evidence; just like these guys are just collecting and sharing evidence. So, second thing cleared up.
I would only recommend this book to a BIG fan. Someone who can die a little to know more about what happened and get some different perspectives in the event. If you think this is just a nice little read on the side, you're terribly wrong. Only buy it if your completely interested.

Oh, where do I start........2006-04-23
Well, for one. I didn't see what Kurt's sex life had to do with the book's investigation. In fact I don't need to know what he did between closed doors, and frankly neither does anyone else. Also this book is long and drawn out. Though, there is a lot of facts that point out some weird unsettling clues about his death, there also isn't any obvious evidence that Courtney Love was behind it. Hell, I highly doubt that she could devise a plot to murder her husband, when she can't even stay sober long enough to perform on Jay Leno. And Finally. Even if Kurt Cobain was murdered, do you think this book could bring him back. No. Be it suicide or homicide, he died and unfortuneately for his family, friends, and fans there's no changing that.
This book was made for the purpose of getting money from angry, grief stricken younger fans of Nirvana.
Totally wasted.......2005-12-18
So Courtney lied.
So Courtney is a addict who is always stoned.
That is all the real evidence these two have to sell their theory that she murdered Kurt.
They must be aspiring to write for the National Inquirer.
Misleading title.......2005-12-14
This book would have been a waste of time even if it had been free.
It doesn't answer the question in its title as it has no answers it is only a book of questions . . . what if this, what if that, what if . . .?
I might as well have been spending the weekend with by sister and brother-inlaw and their 2 year old who only asks why this, why that, why, why, why?
It was a poorly thought out book that has managed to sucker in thousands of buyers.
A waste of trees and time.......2005-12-14
I have never read anything so poorly written before.
This "book" is a waste of time and of paper.
Looks at both sides of the story, exhaustively researched.......2005-08-14
This book has been popularized as the one that contains private investigator Tom Grant's theory that Courtney Love hired someone to kill Kurt Cobain. I read it thinking it would be borderline wacko with the conspiracy theory. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was an exhaustively researched account of the history of Nirvana, Kurt, Courtney, the days surrounding Kurt's death, and the investigation of the incident by the Seattle PD. The authors do present Grant's theory and his main arguments pointing to murder, but they are quick to point out that there absolutely no smoking gun, nothing explicity incriminating Courtney. They even point out some failing's in Grant's work and theories. Their main case is that there are enough unanswered questions and questionable actions during the investigation that the case should be re-opened. In fact, most people who review Grant's theory, when polled, say that the investigation should be re-opened to lay to rest all the discrepancies that he turned up.
The authors took nothing at face value when writing this book. Anytime someone claimed to have a degree, or that an incident happened, or the police were called, or that they said a certain thing, anything, the authors looked it up and verifyed whether it was true. If they couldn't verify it, they identify it as a claim. A lot of Courtney's official bio seems to be her wacky brand of lies and tirades, since the authors found many, many discrepancies in her statements, especially those to her biographer, Melissa Rossi.
Courtney is a fascinating woman, a spectacle, a force to be reckoned with. The authors remind us that no matter how much Courtney bashing goes on, we have to remember that our icon Kurt did love and trust her, and she was one of the few people he was close to. The portrayal of Courtney in this book has made me want to learn more about this dynamic woman.
Read this book to see an excellent case laid out in front of you, and then see what you think. I'm reading the author's 2004 follow-up, Love & Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain next.

i think it is great reflection of kurt cobain and nirvana it has loads of usefull info and any nirvana or kurt cobain fan should read jeff burlingame is one of the years best authors
A journalist wrote this.......2006-11-25
A real honest-to-goodness journalist wrote this book. More to the point, this is a reporter who worked for the newspaper in Kurt's hometown of Aberdeen AND grew up there. That means Jeff can capture the image of Aberdeen and what it was like for Kurt growing up in the timber town like the expert he actually is. This isn't just a book. This may be part of a grand memoir defining the everyman of Aberdeen while at the same time talking about Kurt's life as a whole. And because Jeff is a journalist, the freshness of his interviews are solid and his objectivity is clear. Unlike some other biographies out there, there are no made up theories here. Recommended for all ages.
Best Kurt Cobain Book to Date.......2006-11-09
I was waiting to buy this book until I read some reviews, then I saw a review online at the Nirvana Fan Club and decided to give it a shot. This book is written for an audience of teens and older so I wasn't expecting any new stories and was surprised that there are. There's a saddening story about Kurt's mom's reaction told by someone who was with her just after she heard about Kurt's death. There are some photos I've never seen before and pictures of two things Kurt drew, which I found most fascinating and there's an update on a memorial committee in Kurt's hometown that's trying to honor him there. The author knew Kurt when they were younger and the book says he is part of that group.
The book is a high-quality hardback and isn't dumbed down like I thought it might be. If you want to know every detail of Kurt's life, there are other books out there that do the job better (though often in error or by making things up). But if you want to know "just the facts" and learn some new stories along the way you should buy this. I was pleasantly surprised with its quality and was happy to add it to my Cobain collection.

Courtney Love and her book of lies. . ........2005-08-24
I had the chance to review this on the internet before buying. Thankfully I did. I would not recommend this book to anyone who really gave anything for Kurt Cobain and or Nirvana. The book is inaccurate and follows a form known as Courtney Love and her book of lies. She helped write this book and who knows what is true and what is not. My opinion is to try Love and Death or Who killed Kurt Cobain or for that matter, try Tom Grant's Investigation manual. Written by someone other than Ms. Courtney Love herself.
A pretty good book........2005-05-24
I bought this book one day at a bookstore because I didn't have much money but I was deeply interested in the Cobain story. I ended up being enthralled by it and I loved it.
But it does have some serious flaws. If you are someone who has a passing interest in Nirvana or someone who wants a very affordable, quick explanation of Kurt Cobain's story because of his popularity & influence, then this may be a good book for you. But if you are someone who loves Nirvana or someone who wants to actually understand Kurt Cobain's story as best as possible, don't get this book and instead purchase "Heavier Than Heaven" by Charles Cross.
Although Never Fade Away is an interesting book and it does describe some good stories & good information, upon reading Heavier Than Heaven I realized how inadequate Never Fade Away is. Charles Cross was given access to deep important information that others can not chance upon, and it makes Never Fade Away look unresearched and from afar. It gets important facts wrong, occasionally. Heavier Than Heaven truly is the definitive biography.
The most boring Kurt Cobain book.......2004-12-28
This book has no structure... Its so boring. Usually when I read a book about Kurt Cobain I cant put it down, but this one I could... EASILY. Ive tried on many occasions, to read this book and stick with it, but I couldnt. Its almost like a addict who cant quit whatever, they just fail. And I failed to enjoy this book. Its boring, and it only talks about stuff Ive already heard. And it documents when the fans and world heard about Cobain's death. Its a good thing I didnt buy it new, and got it for $2.99 at Half Price books, I couldnt have ever forgiven myself for wasting my money on this. Its even worse than Heavier than Heaven... Read Who killed Kurt Cobain? or Love and Death, by the same genius authors. The truth is in those novels.
an okay bio.......2004-07-20
This is a hastely put together although reasonably adequate biography of Kurt Cobain and the legendary band Nirvana. Some interesting background info on Cobain's childhood and earlier years, and lots of info on his musical life with the band and their rise as recording artists. Easy to read, but not terribly comprehensive. Worth checking out if you're a Nirvana fan or want to read about the tragic life and death of a rock star.

Kurt Cobain was Murdered.......2004-04-21
Isnt it amazing, that in this day and age, there are still organizations like the Seattle Police Department, that believe just because someone is an addict, that it doesnt really matter how they died?
Kurt was a beautiful and caring artist--even if he was an addict. The people responsible for his MURDER need to be brought to justice.
Any book which doesnt relay the horrible inconsistencies surrounding the so-called police investigation of Kurt's death, is either very shoddy; or in league with the murderers.
Read the site cobaincase.com, if you want to know the details.
And this reviewer has NEVER found conspiracy theories seductive in and of themselves.

You should buy this book.......2007-08-17
This is one of the best books I have read about Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. It has interviews with Krist, Dave, and Kurt. It has some really cool pictures in it, too! I don't know if they think Kurt's death was murder or suicide though. Very well written and worth my money! If you are thinking about buying this book I have 2 words for you: BUY IT! This book is for any Kurt Cobain and Nirvana fan!
much better.......2007-01-20
this book really lets you get to know Cobain a lot better than "Heavier than heaven" did. In that books the facts are inaccuarte and you can't tell where the facts end and where the authors opinions begin. This is much better, a great read. Buy this instead of "heavier than heaven"
now that you know about the man learn more about his death; there is so much that you don't know and sadly it's all true. justiceforkurt.com

A true classic .......2005-12-13
One of the most interesting books I've ever read. This book has an excellent collection of Rolling Stone articles of Kurt Cobain. Believe me, this conatins some excellent articles on Kurt Cobain prior to his death and after. This also has some exclusive interviews with him as well. The collection of pictures are also fantastic. What a great idea this was again for many dissapointed Nirvana fans. This is abolsutely a must have for the Nirvana fans. It's one of those books that you will never want to lose or put down. Buy it. Don't get it from the library. You'll end up wanting to get it again.
Very Informative.......2005-11-20
I found this book very informative. It helps you depict Kurt Cobains traits alittle bit easier. He was a very odd person and from many interviews you can tell.
This book has alot of pictures making this experience a bit more colorful. You can read different opinions of Kurt through the eyes of many people and they roughly all say the same thing...Why?Why did he commit suicide? This book may leave many different impressions on that.
The book also limelights Nirvana,Kurt Cobains top notch band. You can understand the finicial situations they went through up to their loads of skyrocketing money and albums.
The book is set chronologically so you can read about what happend during the making of each album. You can also see the changes Kurt went through to achieve his darker persona. You also read of the happier young Kurt and all of his youthful experiences
I have owned this book now for two years and every time i read it i find something new i didn't know before. This book is long enough to help you decide if you think Kurt is an idol or a blow out.You can also understand the amount of drugs used wich is really upsetting, but on brighter note this is a good way to be introduced to rock legend.
I think this was the one..........2005-05-06
I was a big Nirvana fan back in the 90's and after Kurt's death, I found a large Hardcover (and expensive for me at that time) book about him. It was an amazing book and had lots of pictures, including (I believe) a picture of his (dead) body...
I was looking through Amazon and all their books on Kurt Cobain and I am almost sure that this was the one I had (since it had to have been published by the mid 90's at the latest - and this one says '94).
So if you are looking for a great book and can actually find a copy of this one, I would say definitely go for it...

Too many rock books--particularly those about the recently, luridly dead--are hastily assembled from clippings and feature only the most superficial assessment of the artist and music in question. It's a pleasure to report, then, that veteran music journalist Christopher Sandford has produced a solidly researched and coherently argued portrait of Nirvana's front man. The author doesn't flinch from the ugly aspects of Kurt Cobain's personality and lifestyle, nor is he wholly admiring of the music. This critical perspective ultimately makes Cobain more human and his 1994 suicide more tragic.
Book Description
Here is the first biography to explore, with shocking detail, the drama that formed this troubled, tragic rock star. Neither an apology nor a condemnation, Kurt Cobain presents a vivid insider’s view of the life and death of a man who galvanized a generation and gave birth to the “grunge” revolution with his band Nirvana. Sandford portrays the provocative, small-town rebel with the talent of John Lennon, and then shows him at work on concert stages in Seattle, New York, and London. Readers follow the struggles of Cobain’s emotional life—his tumultuous relationships with family and his fellow band members, his drug addiction and sexual appetite, his stormy marriage to Courtney Love, and the birth of his daughter, who, as Cobain wrote in his suicide note, “reminds me too much of who I used to be.” During his research, Sandford has had access to Cobain’s family, his colleagues, his former friends and lovers, and even author William S. Burroughs, whom Cobain considered to be his “greatest influence.” The result is a graphic account of the life that led to the day in April 1994 when Cobain turned a shotgun on himself and became a martyr to disaffected youth around the world.

Why Diss A Legend?.......2005-12-15
First off i liked this book in the beggining it caught my attention, even through the constant lies and errors. It contains alot of informative bits and pieces, many are untrue but it makes for a great fictional world.
Dissing is a large part of this book,Kurt gets ranked on even after he died.Thats really disrespectful, ecspecially toward the person who shaped modern rock. Some of the info that holds true for the most part is too generic.Rehashed info we knew for many years.Kurt is portrayed as moody beyond belief and a loser.
Hey there is pictures!Redeeming? No but something to tide over your bordem and to prepare you for more lies. They do cover a good amount of time in good detail though so the book isn't entirley bad.I think this is a bare minimum decent book, and thats all i can afford to give this book.
Cobain was GOD, he replaced Clapton.......2005-11-25
The Author, a Mr. Sandford (undoubtedly a pseudonym), has produced an incredibly mean spirited, abomination. The book is a pack of lies, each page stuffed with obnoxious fabrications from Sandford's pathetic longing for the glory that was Kurt Cobain. To publish a book filled with such nauseating filth, stories rolled out to only titillate, to spank your imagination into believing this is the real truth, shame on Sandford and shame on the publishers Carroll & Graf. Fabrications such as thsse should not be tolerated by an enlightened and sophisticated population. Cheap and Tawdry, avoid at all cost.
This is a notorious book, don't buy it.......2005-11-21
But don't take my word for it, see what Jack Endino himself had to say: [begin quote] "... recently someone sent me a photocopy of just two (!) pages (106 and 107) from Chris Sandford's book on Nirvana, entitled "Kurt Cobain". In it he describes the sessions for Bleach from the point of view of "Endino's engineer" and even an unnamed "second source at Reciprocal"; he describes Kurt putting lit matches in his mouth, spraying antiperspirant down his throat, pouring beer on the mixing board, taking "fistfuls of pills", etc, etc. Let me f*****g set this straight: this is pure fiction. In all the times I worked with Kurt I never even saw him drink a beer in the studio. His pre-Nevermind times in the studio with me were utterly normal; the band was there to work ... either [Sandford] made all this up (can't really see why he would want to) or better yet, someone else decided to take the gullible journalist for a ride, figuratively speaking ... I haven't read the rest of the book yet 'cause I don't want to spend the cash, but I hope for Kurt's (and his daughter's) sake that the rest of it isn't like those two pages I got. (Later note: It is. I've since read it. The whole book is full of equally outlandish nonsense. Sigh. OK, now extrapolate from how 100% fictional the two pages I know about are...) Seeing this kind of fiction printed about Kurt really bums me out. Look, all you potential book-writers, Azzerrad's done it already; the rest of you can just go home." [end quote] See [...] for more.
Read's like a Tabloid.............2005-09-18
Let's not beat around the bush, this book is inaccurate fabricated garbage. Perhaps that was not entirely Sanford's fault, unlike Charles R. Cross later, he didn't have access to Kurt's journals etc, but he still appears to have made very little effort interviewing people and appears to have used mostly tabloids and newspaper articles as his sources; without carefully sifting through what was and was not fabrication. There in lies the problem, this book is filled with mythical fantasy tales regarding Kurt's actions.
Such fabricated examples are...
*Kurt spitting in a crew members face after being interupted giving a woman oral-sex backstage at a Saturday Night Live taping (while he was already in his Monogamous relationship with Courtney).
*Kurt practically attempting to rape a woman.
*Kurt kneeing Eddie Vedder in the groin backstage at a show.
As most Nirvana fans know, Kurt appeared on MTV's "Headbangers Ball" in a Yellow Gown with Krist Novoselic, after which the two jokingly flirted with each other. Nobody took it seriously. But OH NO, according to Sanford, Kurt was a serious cross dresser and was LEGITIMATELY flirting with Novoselic.
You get the idea. This book reads like the infamous 'Vanity Fair' article all over again.
It does at least have some nice photos, which is why i'm being generous and giving it 1 star.
But do yourself a favour, read Charles R. Cross's "Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain" for the real story of Cobain's life.

Cobain rises from the dead to kill Christopher Sandford.......2005-08-30
Mr. Sandford provides relentless negativity regarding Cobain. I find myself feeling as negative as he portrays Cobain. You may want to avoid the misery of reading this book. At first I thought perhaps he was trying to discourage copycat suicides or behavior by ridiculing Cobain's existence, however he even manages to discredit Cobain's sympathy for terminally ill children. Perhaps Sandford should consider ridding the world of his foul observations of public figures for profit.

Product Description
Godspeed: The Kurt Cobain Graphic takes Cobain s story and plays it out as a totally unique graphic novel. From the luminous colors of an idyllic childhood through the flamboyant hues of success and stardom, Cobain s story inevitably declines into a much darker palette. The script draws from the singer s tortured self-image as well as straightforward biographical fact so that the tone of the book fluctuates between subjective dream-state and objective reality. Going beyond the facts, it transmutes Cobain s extraordinary life into an equally extraordinary work of art. In full color throughout with amazing artwork by Flameboy.

Kurt Cobain' what a legend.......2006-06-20
This book is the perfect way to keep the spirit of Kurt Cobain alive. It is an amazing book, and everything that is written in this book is true of Cobain and his character, and the pictures and just breath taking..!! It talks about his life, the love he felt, how he suffered under the pressure of addiction, that eventuly led to his suicide. If someone is a Cobain fan, just interested in him, or simply can see beyond what they think they know about him, you should read this book. I recomend it!!!!

Meh.......2005-08-21
i've seen some bashings of this book, and that's what made me hesitate about buying it. i did get a scanned version of it, read it and i must say: it is a remarkable comic book. it did exagerate facts in kurt's life, yes, but it isn't supposed to be accurate, it's not a bio, it's a comic. i did love it. excellent graphic work and, well, the way it was written is preety good too. the writer has done some research before actually putting anything down on paper. if you are a comic book fan, kurt cobain fan and understand the difference between a comic and a biography, get this book. if not, better just leave it alone.

It's what is NOT in the journals that makes me wonder..........2007-02-21
I just finished reading "Journals," and I'm left wondering what I'm not being told by only having access to a very small part of the writings Kurt Cobain left behind. If I only had "Journals" as a Kurt Cobain source, I'd be left thinking he was obsessive, neurotic and incapable of making good judgments. Is that the message Courtney Love wants me to have? If so, she's failed because I am a Nirvana fan, and I know Kurt was a much more complex person that she would have us believe. While I am honored to have been given just the tiniest peek into Kurt's mind, I know there is so much more to his story than "Journals" leaves one to believe. It is an interesting read but it fails (in its incompleteness) to give the reader an indepth look into the man, the legend, that is/was Kurt Cobain. If anything, it helps Courtney keep her own personal portrayal of him right out in the open.
you can't be serious.......2006-07-25
Kurt didn't want to be a commercial mechanism. He didn't even want his 100 favourite albums to be published in Come As You Are by Azerrad... Let alone have his deepest thoughts revealed to an unpassionate, apathetic, artistically ignorant world. This thing is the ultimate invasion of privacy and a corporate atrocity. There's nothing here I want to know. There's nothing here that deserves to see the light of day no matter how enlightening. Sorry Mr. Moustache, you don't know anything about Nirvana if you think that Kurt would've wanted this to be read.
Tarnished superhero.......2005-08-31
Picking up this book is an eerie feeling. Kurt had been gone for 10 years by the time it was published and this was part of a never ending legal battle settlement between Krist, Dave and Courtney over who is entitled to what in his estate. I loved Nirvana, I still do. But things came out that I otherwise wouldn't have understood.
As it's published to look exactly like the scraps of notebook paper and stationary that they were written on, you feel as if you are literally reading something he left for you. The first page is what makes it, where he left a note to a lover saying "Read this and figure me out when I'm gone". It made me feel like I was reading some of my own journals, as you page through going "what was I thinking when I wrote this?!". It's a little embarassing, the thought of someone reading my journal after I died.
You would have to be very intimately aquainted with many aspects of his life story to understand the events he writes about. Because of that fact, a glossary is provided to name and date each event. You see the future: trapsing through Aberdeen, a new drummer named Dave is coming, the trip to Rome which would be the last show Nirvana would ever play.
The true horror was something in the middle, as Kurt is spiraling out of control with his addictions and reveals a secret that they tried to keep. He talks about being in rehab with Courtney and that they were not allowed to see or talk to each other and he was lonely there. Six weeks later, their daughter, Frances, was born. Courtney lied, she WAS on drugs the whole time! Time will tell of the long term effects on Frances, as there is only so long she can be kept under lock and key because she's just about to hit the teen years. But Kurt is just as much to blame as she for using drugs while pregnant. How could he? How could they both?
Kurt was a great influence on me, that was a terrible fact to read. Our heros are human, they're not all good. They make mistakes, but I can't just shrug that one off with an "Oh well". Still, he's a martyr. He was the martyr for a brief, exciting time which just happened to be my teenage years.
Kurt Cobain Journals is great.......2004-11-27
This is a great book and it really lets the reader get a good view of kurt cobain. The best part is that it wasn't planned and this is truely him with no editing. This book and kurt cobain himself is great and you should definately get it because its fun to read and you will enjoy it.
Hmmm...........2004-04-14
Ok, it was wrong to publish this book. Cobain's journals are private and what he wrote and in some cases drew is no one's business. Even though I knew this, I still read this book because it is pretty interesting. It can be a bit repetative at times, but after all, it's a journal. There are also some letters, drawings and comic strips. From what I've heard, Courtney Love published these journals, which of course is completely disrespectful but it was a smart move for her in a way because I'm sure this book will sell well.
