Inside AutoCad 12 For DOS ISBN 1562050559
While a co-worker was spending hundreds of dollars to
learn AutoCad at the local collage, I learned as much at
the same pace at home with this fine book. It should be sub-titled as a tutorial. The book begins assuming you know nothing about AutoCad,
and carefully explains in a straight-forward method all you need to know. Everything is done in sequence so each excercise teaches
new commands to be used in following drawings. It is a great primer
for new users learning 2-D basics, and I have shared it with experienced users at work as a reference manual for 2-D
and 3-D drawings. The book comes with a disk with programs
to help you learn which was a real time-saver for me. I would recommend this book to all beginning and professional
AutoCad users. I have other titles from The New Riders Publishing Company, and they have all been a very good investment.

this graphic novel is goos if you really need to know the history of venom but at times it gete REALLY boring but at the end you will be happy

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but it disappointed me.......2007-08-01

As you read. "Spider-Man: Birth of Venom" focuses more on Spidey wearing (and eventuelly trying to get free of) his alien costume than in the fan-favorite vilain. Yeah, Venom appears and fights spidey a lot of times, but not enough to call the book "Birth of Venom". The right name would be "the symbiote saga".

5 out of 5 stars .......2007-07-14

tells the entire tale. the editors selected all the comics that told the story and assembled them in a nifty Tocc McFarlene drawn cover. A must for spidey lovers.

3 out of 5 stars A good source for info but not much else.......2007-06-09

Perhaps I had overly high hopes for this collection, and to be fair, the "Birth of Venom" does exactly what it states: it explains and presents the origins of the black suit symbiote and its merger with Eddie Brock to become Venom. But as thankful as I am for those inclusions, this collection suffers from an incredibly disjointed, thrown-together feeling and approach. As a few others have mentioned, some "issues" are only one or two pages thrown in there to move the story along. It's disappointing since it gives the reader of something bigger going on, but without knowing the full story. On that same subject, 1/2 of Venom himself, Eddie Brock, is not even mentioned until his full appearance as Venom, despite being in previous issues. Why they didn't just throw a page or two of him in there, like they did earlier on, is baffling and undermines a big part of who Venom is and why he does what he does. Sure, he explains it through flashbacks, but flashbacks aren't quite the same as reading it in "realtime." Another big problem with the collection, and probably one that just couldn't be worked around, was the inclusion of issues with no closure. The symbiote suit, much more than the character "Venom", was the focus here, but several issues throw in plenty of villains, such as Kingpin, the Rose, Jack O'Lanter, and Hobgoblin, but never reaches a conclusion with any of them really. The issues at the time weren't focused on Venom, so their inclusions and conclusions feel especially jarring. A big part of the Spider-man mythos is the development of these stories and its characters, so it's a tad frustrating wondering what happened to Hobgoblin, or why Hydro-man suddenly popped up. The inclusion of a few issues that don't even HAVE any developments of the symbiote suit undermines the inclusion of the ones that do, as they could have been exercised in favor of more plot and drama.
Speaking of which, while the collection doesn't exactly flow, it does have some great old-time Spider-man moments that were a wonderful reminder of a time long passed. In this volume, Spider-man dates The Black Cat, Mary Jane confesses her knowledge that Peter's Spider-man, and Peter and Aunt May have a spat over college. But, like the rest of the volume, these dramas never reach fruition, but they're interesting scenarios.
Also, the art, as some mentioned, is a mixed bag. It goes from rather poor (early on) to phenomenal (later on.) Having read up on Todd McFarlane, it's interesting to see how his style evolved. With issues jumping forward by months and years, it's shocking to see his Spider-man go from lackluster to the artistic Renaissance man that established McFarlane as a power player in comics. Some of the later issues have poses and action scenes that are almost frame worth, and it's absolutely jarring to compare that to the earlier issues in this volume.
But, even that has its problems. Venom himself has evolved artistically since his introduction, and the Venom in this collection is a very rough version of the character. While he went on to be really overexposed later, he wasn't quite developed enough in this collection either. Visually, he just starts off as a bigger version of the black Spider-man with a toothy grin. Later, his teeth get sharper, he gets more developed, and looks much better... but as good as Todd draws him, Venom truly reached his peak later on, sporting a bluish hue to his costume and getting his trademark tongue and green spit. Those later incarnations are not included in this collection, which would have been a nice touch to see how he developed.
In the end, this collection does its job, but I can't help but feel it could have been done better. I can understand that trying to cram almost 10 years of development into one volume can be daunting, and cuts had to be made, but some inclusions and omissions are baffling, and the complete story feels distinctively lacking. If you're a Venom fan, I can give this a recommendation, but you'd do better reading "Maximum Carnage" or "Venom: Lethal Protector".

4 out of 5 stars The Venom flows.......2007-04-30

With Spider-Man 3 looming, fans will finally get to see Venom on the big screen. However, for those who have less experience with the old Spidey comics, this TPB serves a big purpose. Spider-Man: Birth of Venom showcases the original stories that have been condensed and adapted for the mega budget film, as this large TPB focuses on the seperation of Peter Parker and the black, alien costume that turns out to be a symbiote. Soon after, the symbiote bonds with the disgruntled Eddie Brock, and Venom is born. Like previous reviewers have stated, these issues were crafted before Venom was massively overexposed and re-written as a dark hero. This TPB showcases Venom as the best Spider-Man villain since the Green Goblin from the Lee and Conway days, and features a variety of talent including a pre-Spawn Todd MacFarlane, legendary John Byrne, and the great Mike Zeck. Some of the dialogue and writing, namely from Tom DeFalco, is a bit dated, but the good definitely outweighs the bad here. All in all, Birth of Venom is a significant chapter in the aching Spider-Man saga, and this TPB should definitely be given a look by Spidey and/or Venom fans new and old.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book to start with !!!.......2007-09-30

As a person with no previous experience with AutoCAD, I needed a book that would help me to understand how to use this program quickly and effectively. So far, after reading several chapters and working with it for a couple of weeks, I have come to enjoy this book due to its simple step-by-step format and its humorous way of explaining this huge program. I have to admit. Before ever working with AutoCAD, I was a big doubter of it. I did not have a good impression of it. All I knew was that AutoCAD was a huge program that mostly dealt with 2-D drawings and that it would be too much and too confusing to learn......NOT SO!!! Thanks to this book, my impression of AutoCAD has gone from one of doubt to one of enjoyment, fun, great versatility and good user-friendly control. My hat's off to "AutoCAD 2007 for Dummies"!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good as a first book period.......2007-04-26

This book will be informative for the beginner and a great reference for the intermediate. Do not buy this book if you have ever been formally trained in AutoCAD or have read any real books - just more of the SOS.

3 out of 5 stars Not useful enough.......2007-03-09

While written with a nice amount of wit, this is a typical computer manual. As with other manuals, all it does is tell you what's in the menus and what the buttons do. Obviously that's important to know, but what everyone really wants from any computer program is for it to be useful to them in some way - they want to actually be able to do something with it. What all these manuals need are step-by-step exercises that serve as models for actual tasks that people routinely can use a particular program for. This book will be informative, but it won't give you any effectiveness in Autocad or make the program useful to you.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Place .......2006-08-07

If you're just getting started with Autocad this is one of the two books I sincerely recommend. Use this one first. But at the same time get a copy of AutoCAD 2007 Bible, by Ellen Finkelstein.

Both books tell you how to get started, but 'For Dummies' gives you a lot more background and a lot more information about what's going on. 'The Bible' then takes over and with three times as many pages goes into a great deal more detail on the wealth of features that are contained in the new version of AutoCAD.

'For Dummies' is written more as a tutorial. It is of the do this and then do that variety. 'The Bible' is more of a reference book where you tend to look up what you want to do and get specific information.

You might consider that 'For Dummies' is the first few pages of 'The Bible' but expanded into a full book format. The pair make an excellent companion for each other to take the beginner as far as he wants to go.

5 out of 5 stars Autocad 2006 for Dummies Review.......2006-03-10

Anyone who has attempted to use Autocad in the past knows that it is a very formidable task. At the present time I have only gotten into a few chapters of Autocad for Dummies. What I have read so far is written in plain English and is very easy to understand. I have high hopes for the rest of the book. As with any technical course, the material must be read and reread a number of times to absorb it completely. It is structured in a logical manner and addresses a wide spectrum of AutoCad techniques which I find very helpful. I am confident that with the help of this book, I will eventually be able to produce a usable drawing. Looks to be a good buy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start.......2006-03-09

AutoCAD is an powerful program. This books takes you into the world of AutoCAD with baby steps. AutoCAD for Dummies throws in a line of humor on every page which keeps the reader from getting stressed about all there is to learn. If you read this book, practice on AutoCAD and then read some more - you'll be a pro soon. To learn AutoCAD also plan to go to some classes !!

4 out of 5 stars well suited for a beginner.......2005-09-05

Middlebrook writes in a deliberately breezy and informal style that is characteristic of the Dummies series. He explains the very latest 2006 version of AutoCAD. Necessarily, in an introductory book, he does not go very deep into the full extent of AutoCAD. But given just a minimal maths background on your part, you should be able to quickly lay out simple two and three dimensional objects using his advice. That maths mostly involves a good grasp of trigonometry and algebra.

If you are already familiar with the 2005 or earlier recent versions of AutoCAD, then avoid this book. You already know enough that you should get a more advanced text on 2006.

Book Description

"The Secret of Rhonda Byrne" or "The Law of Attraction" is not a new concept. In fact,it isn't a secret at all. The law of attraction was first promulgated by some of theearliest wise men, and it appears again and again throughout the Bible. But very fewpeople have learned or understand it.That's why it's unfamiliar to many and the reason it remains virtually a secret. If you were to ask one man after another what the secret of success is, you probably wouldn't run into one man who could tell you. Yet, this information is enormously valuable to us, if we really understand and apply it. It's valuable to us not only for our own lives, but for the lives of those around us - our families, employees, associates and friends. The principles of the Secret - the principles of success, appear again and again throughout the Bible, if you only look carefully.

1 out of 5 stars Kiss your money goodbye..........2007-09-30

I expected this book to be chock full of Biblical facts to support or refute "The Secret." This is not the case.

The book has several punctuation/spelling errors. Was there no editor?

It is only 100 pages. The font is large and everything is spaced far apart. The book could have been written in 50 pages to save paper.

There are "quotes" throughout the book that are meant to make a person think they are from the Bible, however, no verse/chapter is referenced so unless one is Biblically savvy, one cannot tell if they are from the Good Book or not.

I looked up many of the scriptures which are referenced and most of them are taken out of context. For example...

Numbers 13:33
And we seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same (like grasshoppers) in their eyes.

If you read the whole chapter in the Bible, the reason they seemed like grasshoppers was because the people were very tall (giants). Period. No secrets. No hidden message. They didn't really "think" they were grasshoppers, therefore, everyone believed they were grasshoppers. It was just a tall/short thing.

Sometimes the chapter of a verse is listed but not the verse number. When I tried to find the verse being referenced, I couldn't. So, I'm not sure if they are really verses or not.

The author talks about evolution as if it is real. (Maybe it is, maybe it isn't but many Christians believe evolution is a fallacy. Why even mention it in this book?)

He also says that whether we believe that God rules the universe or some other power rules it, it doesn't matter. The principles are all the same. It all works the same.

How many God-fearing Christians do you know who believe this? (Between this theory and the aforementioned evolution, I have to wonder if the author is a Christian at all?)

Perhaps the biggest secret of all is how this book ever got published. You will not find the answers you seek here. It is far better to get them from the Bible yourself.

It seems to obvious to work but it does, Give it a try and it will change your life forever.

I read both The Secret and this book. I had a real hard time staying focused on "The Secret" because it said the same thing over and over in different words it was boring. This book however really turned out to be an eye opener, the different ways to pray really helped me as well and I am seeing very positive beneficial changes in my life that I never thought would happen. I think this book is a great companion to "The Secret" if you have read that and if you have a hard time staying focused on reading material this book is short, sweet and sums things up in an easy to understand interesting way.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-07-09

The book was very small and seemed like it was written, edited and printed very quickly, as I found many typos. I was disappointed with the way it used bible quotes to try to make points (there are many more quotes they could have used; it didn't seem like they did much research). I thought there would be more discussion of what the bible says about "the secret" (the law of attraction). I would NOT recommend "The Secret of Rhonda Byrne or The Law of Attraction in the Bible".

Book Description

For over twenty-five years, David Byrne has focused his unique genius upon forms as diverse as disco, architectural photography, and PowerPoint. Now he presents what may be his most personal work to date, a collection of drawings and diagrams mapping the strange corners of his mental landscape. It’s an eclectic blend of faux science, automatic writing, satire, and an attempt to find connections where none were thought to exist — a sort of self-therapy, allowing the hand to say what the voice cannot. Irrational logic, it’s sometimes called. It's the application of logical scientific rigor and form to basically irrational premises. To proceed, carefully and deliberately, from nonsense, with a straight face, often arriving at a new kind of sense. The world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed — to be a sealed, sensible box — it shows us something completely surprising.

Byrne’s enigmatic, enchanting collection teaches us that there is absolutely no reason to discount anything, of any type, anywhere.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creative starting point...........2007-01-10

What a great book for sparking ideas. Byrne Makes connections to intangible thoughts in a visual medium. It is also wonderful to catch a glimpse of the creative process of one of the greatest creative thinkers of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Start Making Sense.......2006-11-16

When TIME magazine put Byrne on its cover back in '86 and called him "Rock's renaissance man", some people shrugged it off and said "yeah, right". Well, that caption has more than withstood the test of time. I can't think of anyone who's been as prolific on so many artistic fronts.

Most recently, he's been quite prolific in his online journal, which itself is a mind boggling display of the incredible range of topics constantly churning through Mr. Byrne's gray haired head.

First and foremost, David Byrne's art (yes, even Talking Heads) is about design. So, as with his previous books, the first thing you notice about the book is its design. "Strange Ritual" was black with big gold letters; the idea was to make it feel and look like a Bible.

Then came "Your Action World", which was huge, and had rubber covers. Not sure what the deal was on that (although a great book in the annals of anti corporatism).

After that, he did a mini Bible called "The new Sins", which by and large, turned the teachings of the real Bible upside down (literally, the book itself could be read upside down or right side up, and in Spanish or English, depending on your mood or bilingual proficiency).

Anyway, "Arboretum" has the look and feel of a library book on certain subjects, maybe philosophy or archaeology, or psychology, in short, an academic look and feel about it.

I started reading this book by just selecting pages at random. By approaching it this way, at first the various drawings have an automatic, stream of consciousness writing feel to them. There's a 4 foot pullout in the back of the book, however, which covers a bunch of topics, corresponding to the various diagrams on numbered pages of the book. If you read the book this way, then the tree diagrams begin to make a lot more sense.

On the latter note, it was Byrne who coined the term "Stop Making Sense". I always took that as "let go of reason, and let the spirit and subconscious take over". As it turns out, Byrne is a very methodical fellow. While he draws heavily from dreams and the subconscious, he prefers to stick to a fairly rigid structure in his concert tours. This aesthetic also emerges in the book, for the most part, and sort of contradicts the whole notion of "Stop Making Sense".

At any rate, Byrne is indeed a true renaissance artist by any definition, and it's always a thrill to see and hear what he's up to next. If you're a long time fan, this is definitely worth buying. If you're nostalgic for a Talking Heads reunion and consider that period his finest hour, you're not likely going to enjoy much of his post TH work or this book.

3 out of 5 stars Better Than Nothing.......2007-04-16

This book provides lots of good information, but it is truly written for dummies. By that I mean that the book is really dummed down with very specific instructions on doing things like opening the program, saving a file, etc.

There are lots of great tips scattered throughout the book. However, they will be difficult to find again without highlighting the book the first time you read it.

The author seems to assume that the reader has experience in AutoCad. This assumption lends the book towards not providing exercises on how to use the program. Such exercises would have made the book much more useful.

The bottom line: The AutoCad software is a big let down in the context sensitive help. A good instruction book is needed - but this is not it. If you can't find a better book, get this one. But, do the best you can to find a book that walks the reader through using the program with exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Fast reference.......2007-03-04

This is the book I use for quick reference when the latest version of AutoCAD comes out. They always seem to change things around and the help in the program is poor at best. This book makes it easy to find the commands for the common stuff and I use the AutoCAD Bible for the more complicated commands.

5 out of 5 stars A Lot of Material, but Well Presented.......2006-10-31

When you are first starting to use AutoCAD, you get to the point where you are looking at a basically bare screen with a whole bunch of control icons around the edges. What do you do then? Just simply getting the first line drawn is a confusing task.

In this book the authors have applied the full range of the 'For Dummies' books style guidelines to produce a book that gets you working in AutoCAD just as fast as possible. It still takes them over fifty pages to get started drawing a picture, but that first fifty pages gives you a lot, an awful lot, of basic information. So often I find that computer books leave out this first fifty pages that explain just what it is that we are trying to do. Plow through it. It's material that you will need to know sooner or later, probably sooner, and it's really not that bad.

As a simple summary about this book. I like the 'For Dummies' style, and if I were trying to get started in AutoCAD, it's where I would start.

It's a big book, almost 800 pages, but a lot of details about Autocad are included. You'll be productive before you get down to the customizing and programming chapters.

Book Description

Economic Value Added (EVA) and Value Based Management (VBM) are today’s hottest management buzzwords. But written information has often been biased and clouded by the authors’ hidden agendas. EVA and Value-Based Management is the first book to unflinchingly discuss the pros and cons of EVA and VBM. Covering both implementation and conceptual issues, with a strong emphasis on performance measurement, value drivers, and management compensation, it allows readers to come to their own informed conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2003-02-26

Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-08-13

As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Fails to keep its promise: Metric War + Compensation.......2001-07-02

This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical, oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.

My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.

This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa, and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.

Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style, which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

5 out of 5 stars The EVA Guide which holds nothing back!.......2001-02-07

This book, together with 'The Quest for Value'by G. Bennett Stewart, III and 'Valuation' by the Tom Copeland, provide a solid backgound on value-based management. S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne give a fair description of their book: 'This book is not a intended to be a "teaser," which tries to tell you enough to whet your appetite so if you want to know more you will have to hire us as your consultants. We aim to be as comprehensive in our treatment of the subject as possible...We try to hold nothing back.' Thank you very much indeed.

5 out of 5 stars is that right, EVA?.......2001-02-03

I had a great approach to EVA concept but it too much simple in finances. Any way it is a good point to start the trip through the EVA world. The principle of EVA appears sound, but this book is good at attempting to illustrate how to practically use it.

Some people are turned off by the black and white reprints like these essentials. But you get so much for the money, and there's hours of reading enjoyment. These essentials are a great way to read or reread comics from the past, without having to fork out the large bucks that the after market sellers are asking. Granted some of these issues are corny, but they're still enjoyable to a 40 year old like myself, who grew up reading these issues.
