Named the CMA song of the year, I Hope You Dance is a challenge to make the most out of life: "And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance."
This beautiful gift book by the Nashville team that wrote the song includes a CD with an acoustic version recorded especially for this book by Lee Ann Womack.

Worth the money.......2007-02-25
I was so impressed by this book when I checked it out from the library I realized I had to have a copy of my own for those times when problems crop up that drive me toward the deep end. This book does what it claims. Though it won't answer all of your problems (what book would), it's easy to understand and can provide simple solutions to what seem like complex problems. It also gives the reader various references and free helpful programs on-line. I highly recommend it.
Not a technical manual.......2007-02-03
OK for the nontechnical XP users. Most of these hints have been published elsewhere but it is a nice collection.
Would recommend this book.......2006-08-15
I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
about computer annoyances. Many of the tips and solutions
can save you frustrations that are always there even in
a minor way because you may not know how to fix them.
Very Practical,Funny,To the Point........2006-07-17
After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.
PC Annoyances.......2006-02-28
This is not the usual boring computer book. Just the opposite.
I'm reading it the second time with a felt tip marker. After reading a chapter I go to my computer, explore, and make changes. I've learned more reading this book than any other computer book I've purchased. And it's written so the average computer user like me can understand.

Book Description
Advance praise for Hotel California
"A British rock critic obsessed with America, Barney Hoskyns brings a genuine love as well as an outsider's keen eye to the rise and fall of the California scene in the sixties and seventies. This is a riveting story, sensitively told."
—Anthony DeCurtis, Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone
"Comprehensive and lively, Hotel California offers a front-row seat on the wild ride—fueled by drugs, sex, and lots of cash—that took Southern California singer-songwriters from hot tubs and local bars to sold-out stadiums, private jets, and the bestselling album of all time."
—Alan Light, author of The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys
"One of our finest pop historians reappraises a neglected and often maligned milieu. Barney Hoskyns deftly evokes not just the decadence but the sense of discovery rooted in 1960s idealism and fostered by a gaggle of record industry mavericks who, for a brief period, managed to make art and business coexist."
—Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again
Customer Reviews:
A Thoroughly Enjoyable Summer Read.......2007-08-20
This is the definitive story of Laurel Canyon and the rise and fall of the singer-songwriters that defined an era. Fabulous backstage gossip, great interviews, and a long, revealing look at David Geffen and his role in shaping the sound and artistry of so many great musicians -- Joni, Laura, CSNY, Gene Clark, JT, you name it.
I enjoyed this book so much I didn't want it to end. It also turned me on to some forgotten songwriters and albums that got lost in the shuffle -- Judee Sill being one amazing example.
An essential read for music fans.
Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagle.......2007-08-04
No Pretender. Interesting insight into the genre of singer-songwriter and into the time period when music was becoming personal to a generation that would lay the groundwork music for future generations. Good background story on the artists and players, explaining with some detail the lyrics that still roll around in my head. Somewhat shallow story describing a shallow lifestyle that resulted in deep emotion. Too much repetition, would have been more interesting if more of the story was told with less dialogue. That said - it's worth the time, and the knowledge gain. Good to know who's behind Linda's "You're no good", and Joni's "Case of You" and why James went to "Mexico". Boomer fodder.
A good read.......2007-08-03
An enjoyable book with a lot of insight into the rock stars of the era.
Just in case the music wasn't a big enough reason to hate them..........2007-07-23
Did you know that the only time musicians ever wrote their own songs was from 1967 to 1976? That's what you'll learn from this book. Did you know that the kids of today just don't care about the world around them? According to the book the only evidence you need of this is that you don't hear a lot of chart-topping anti-Bush songs coming out of coffee houses. So remember kids, until you're a drug-damaged, self-righteous, hypocritical d-bag pushed to the stars by a sexually confused ruthless business man (the only people who have ever been capable of and succeeded in changing the world), you don't mean anything-just like their elders.
But to sum up this book: Stills and Young have a love-hate relationship, David Geffen is gay and pushed Jackson Browne because he had a crush on him, David Crosby is an easier-to-listen-to version of Sean Penn, The Eagles were a marketing scam and Joni Mitchell owns that parking lot.
PS-too many Zevon tags, not enough Zevon.
poorly written,inaccurate.......2007-06-10
don't bother to buy this very poorly written book that has distorted facts. The author is basically repeating various quotes from many sources repeatedly.Boring...His facts are wrong. For example he states that Graham Nash was a very compromising person. In fact he was not and this has been verified with his past history with the Hollies.
I am not a critical person but this book was a real disappointment to me...
Book Description
Live Like You Were Dying is the unforgettable story inspired by Tim McGraw's #1 Country Music song of the same name. It weaves a tale of the miracles that happen once you stop being so busy with life that you actually have time to live it.
Millions have embraced the song's lyrics. Now experience the inspirational story that will touch your heart and soul.

Good reminder to not waste too much time.......2007-03-28
I first heard Tim McGraw's song on the radio when my mother was hospitalized and in very serious condition. I didn't hear it again on the radio until she was hospitalized yet again and we had gotten some very bad news. Both times, I felt it was meant specifically for me to hear it and really listen to it. The book is written almost like a child's book, but the message really is very simple and you don't need a 250-page self-help book to understand the meaning. I will read it again and again just to drive the message home and plan to get additional copies to give away for upcoming birthday gifts. The CD with the song goes along with it nicely.
How My Life Has Been Changed.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful book on how one should live to realize ones true potential.I ordered four copies as gifts to friends and family members .
As I approach my 71st birthday , I have a brand new outlook on how I will spend my remaining years . In essence, GO FOR IT !!!!
Live Like You Were Dying.......2006-11-06
I found this book to be touching and inspirational. It was well written and nicely presented. It impressed me so much that I bought extra copies to pass along to my daughter and 2 of my best friends. The CD that was included was and added bonus.
Small Book.......2006-10-31
Very nice inspiring book with interesting pictures and quotes, but also very short. Bought it as a bargain book for under $5. Good deal.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-23
My husband passed away 12 days before his 41st birthday - he LIVED just like this book talks about - long before he new he was sick - Someone gave me a copy of this book and WOW - I realized he knew how to LIVE and it has given me the boost I need to LIVE mine until I see him again!
Book Description
Of all the recordings to emerge from the Athens-via-Denver collective called Elephant 6, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is the one that has worked its way under the most skins. Magnet magazine named it the best album of the 1990s, and Creative Loafing recently devoted a cover story to one fan's quest to understand why band leader Jeff Mangum dropped out of sight soon after Aeroplane's release. The record sells steadily to an audience that finds it through word of mouth.
Weird, beautiful, absorbing, difficult, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a surrealist text loosely based on the life, suffering and reincarnation of Anne Frank, with guest appearances from a pair of Siamese twins menaced by the cold and carnivores, a two-headed boy bobbing in a jar, anthropomorphic vegetables and a variety of immature erotic horrors.
Mangum sings his dreamlike narratives with a dreamer's intensity, his creaky, off key voice occasionally breaking as he struggles to complete each dense couplet. The music is like nothing else in the 90s indie underground: a psychedelic brass band, its members self-taught, forging polychromatic washes of mood and tribute. The songs stick to one narrow key, the images repeat and circle back, and to listen is to be absorbed into a singular, heart-rending vision.

great history, well told.......2007-07-05
A great essay, detailing who was there at the creation of indy-music's greatest album, and who was left after it all disappeared. Makes you feel like you were there, too. If I were giving the In the Aeroplane cd as a gift (and I often do), I would definitely include this great little book as well. Viva Jeff Mangum!! Come back to us.
A book about the 90's.......2007-02-06
I bought this book for answers to questions I have about the lyrics to this album, not for answers to questions I have about the 90's or about living in a commune.
A Perfect Companion to the Album.......2007-01-25
Hey, check this out: a smart, competent writer with a passion for a wonderful album actually got enough inside access to write something meaningful about it! I think this is the way the 33 1/3 series should work - the book complements the album, and made me go back and listen to it with fresh ears. Strongly recommended for fans of E6 or Aeroplane.
i dont know.......2007-01-04
if you loved their work then you will enjoy this book. it's a quick read and it could have gone a little deeper ,but that probably had more to do with the subjects than the author.
For those of us that want more.......2006-02-23
This is a amazing little book about one of my most personal and favorite albums. NMH were such an emotive, passionate band and I am so pleased that Kim Cooper equals that same level of feeling.
What's even better is that Cooper doesn't just deal with the making of the album, but rather gives a mini-history of the band and somehow in only 104 pages she pulls this off and goes into detail about the making of the album, the following tours and eventual decline into obscurity.
Truly wonderful!

Well thought out series........2007-09-27
"For a real violin study, go with Suzuki." While that might work for a child that is ages 3-4 in a one-on-one or small group setting (which is what the Suzuki Method was intended for), it does not work well in large group learning situation for kids who are twice that age, beginning instruments in fourth and fifth grade. And to be honest, almost everything in the Suzuki method *IS* an arrangement of an original work (like the Bach Bouree from the cello suites set for violin), chosen because even in their simplified form they help teach basic critical and fundamental concepts.
This is my third year using EE2000 in my school program. I usually have between 30-40 students at each grade level in the orchestra. The books and their accompanying CD/DVD work really well and are of the appropriate complexity for the students ages none through eleven. As a private instructor myself, I recommend to all my students to seek outside instruction, but EE2000 provides a good balance of technical development with ensemble skills for the beginners. Students coming into my program who already play don't feel bored because I am able to append more complex tasks in bowing and fingering to them using the existing material, giving them helpful exercises to expand their current abilities, while they help in encouraging their beginning peers.
Lastly, a smart child, if they are so motivated (as some of my kids are), can look at the directives in the EE2000 book and figure out a lot of things on their own ahead of the class, and they are provided with just enough information to accomplish those tasks fairly correctly, without doing awful things to their technique. The included instruction videos are very helpful in this case as well. This is not true with most other methods (and the Suzuki books are entirely useless without a proper instructor!).
Don't get me wrong; I was a Suzuki student myself for my first few years of playing and from time to time use some of their excellent pieces in my own private teaching (although I primarily teach advanced junior high through college age players). However, it has its target audience, which is entirely different from that which EE2000 and others like it are designed for.
The songs are not the original composition..why..??.......2007-02-24
Becuase how else would you learn to read music and interpret that music properly with your violin if you already knew how the song was going to progress?
This makes it "cheat proof" for young and old alike. I like that. It forces the student to concentrate on the notes and actually read them instead of memorizing. It's the best and most organized book of its' kind.
The cd and dvd are included as is some very useful computer software. You do not have to go out and buy everything seperately. This helps on the students, or parents, pocketbook. Lessons are expensive enough without having to go out and spend a fortune on material for the lesson. Save some money and a whole lot of sight reading headaches down the road and get this book.
Excellent for Adult Beginner!.......2006-09-19
Once I got my hands on this book, I discarded all the other "beginner" books I'd purchased. No more having to play juvenile ditties like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
I'm an adult beginner violinist and Essential Elements 2000 for Strings with its accompanying CD & DVD has enabled me to teach myself how to play my violin while thoroughly enjoying the effort and without experiencing the boredom and humiliation of having to learn tunes better geared toward much younger students.
I've only been playing since July and I'm already about to graduate to the second book in the series. The curriculum is interesting, playing along with the orchestra on the CD is exciting, and realizing how fast I'm progressing is a dream come true for this 54 year old beginner.
I highly recommend this book as well as Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory Complete to anyone seriously interested in learning violin.
Best Suited for Children.......2006-08-15
I bought this book because it had a DVD and CD. I had already started learning the violin, and most of the pieces in this book were far simpler than the ones I had been playing in another beginner book. The DVD shows only very basic information, and is full of admonishments to "listen to your teacher, do not do X until your teacher says to". This book is really for kids, as the very simple arrangements and 'compositiion' assignments show. I hoped that the bowing exercises would be useful, and they are, but not enough to justify buying this book for an adult.
Essential Elements leaves much to be desired........2006-05-05
If you are looking for a book that will teach you a variety of music and styles, this is not the one. All the songs look like they were arranged and composed at the last minute. Only 1 song (simple gifts) is anywere near the original composition of the composer. For a real violin study, go with Suzuki.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining, informative, but not definitive yet.......2005-08-31
Oliver Trager's "Keys To The Rain" is far from the "definitive" Bob Dylan Encyclopedia. As another reader notes, there are errors including some he didn't mention that I'll add here: The original September 1974 New York recording of "If You See Her, Say Hello," re-recorded in Minneapolis for its release on "Blood On The Tracks," was not included on "Biograph" (Trager may be confusing it with "You're A Big Girl Now"), but on "The Bootleg Series, Volume 1-3." Trager also claims Dylan's 1984 "Real Live" failed to make the charts. Not so. It failed to make the top 100, but it did have a brief, albeit dim, blaze of glory in the Billboard Top 200. There are other errors, most of them fairly minor, but their cumulative effect makes one question Trager's reliability too often.
Despite the faults, this is still an entertaining and informative read with lots of background on the recordings and, more significantly, the songs, including those that Dylan only performed in concert. Yes, it is reasonable to argue that it wasn't necessary to provide two pages on the careers of Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini simply because Dylan covered their legendary "Moon River" at a handful of concerts (and if other sources are correct, Dylan only performed it once upon hearing of the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan). But I find these facts to be the main appeal of Trager's book. There are similar biographical details provided for everyone from Mel Tillis (whose "Detroit City" is another hit and run cover from the Never Ending Tour) and Charles Gates Dawes, vice president to Calvin Coolidge and co-author of "It's All In The Game," another chestnut Dylan dug out two decades ago in concert. And, of course, there are pages on less surprising figures, including Woody Guthrie, Blind Willie McTell, Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen. The result is that this book is almost a mini-history of popular music as much as it is about Dylan, but I find it contributes to a greater appreciation for Dylan's impressive range of musical styles and influences. On the other hand, a ridiculous amount of space is given to a biography of Catfish Hunter, the baseball player who was the subject of the most inconsequential outtake from the 1976 "Desire" album.
Trager's unpretentious style is refreshing, though, especially in contrast to those who write about Dylan and his songs as though the man was already dead and buried instead of alive, kicking, and as brilliant as ever.
Hopefully, Trager or someone at the publisher's office will pay attention to the complaints provided by the readers, and eliminate the errors in future editions. With a little work, Trager's book may one day live up to its title. It's still worthwhile overall, but Clinton Heylin would have gotten more of the facts straight.

Less Than Definitive.......2005-04-01
Keys to the Rain is undoubtedly a valuable guide to Bob Dylan's recorded output. The book is well-researched and written in a straightforward, accessible style.
Unfortuntately, the book has numerous flaws that make it an often frustrating read. The factual errors include the following: the author states that The Basement Tapes' version of "Million Dollar Bash" is "notable for Dylan's use of the harmonica" when there is no harmonica on the track; the version of "Spanish Is the Loving Tongue" that appeared as the B-side single of "Watching the River Flow" is not the same version that was released on the Dylan lp; "Step It Up and Go" is from the album Good As I Been to You, not World Gone Wrong; and "Down Along the Cove" is erroneously listed as being included on The Band's re-release of Rock of Ages.
Numerous errors in dates dot the book. There is a wonderful photo of Dylan and two youngsters (page 602) that is dated 1966 but comes from much earlier (either 1962 or 1963).
There is one particularly egregious misquotation of Dylan's words, as the phrase "Truth is shadowy" in the World Gone Wrong liner notes becomes "Truth is a shadow" in the book, which changes the phrase's meaning.
Trager writes in the introduction that "unreleased outtakes" and "unreleased material from The Basement Tapes are not included." Yet he includes songs never released by Dylan but recorded and released by other artists (which the author should have explained in the too-brief introduction). There really is no reason for Trager not to have included these songs, since he includes all songs Dylan has played in concert (both original songs and cover versions), and he includes unnecessarily long biographies of the authors of said covers. So the reader gets pages and pages on songwriters such as Sammy Cahn, Merle Travis, Lefty Frizzell and Donnie Fritts (to name a few), but nothing on such great unreleased Dylan songs as "I'm Not There," All-American Boy," "Goodbye Holly" and "Yonder Comes Sin." The author says that "these omissions were made for reasons of space," but surely he could have cut back on his discussion of other artists in a Bob Dylan encyclopedia and made room for all of Dylan's original songs, officially released or not. Nor is there anything on great covers recorded by Dylan in the studio but not released (such as "Freedom for the Stallion"). Including these songs would then have truly earned the book the title of definitive.
If you appreciate (or are interested in) Mr. Dylan's art..........2005-01-06
I've got Trager's 1997 book--The American Book of the Dead: The Definitive Grateful Dead Encyclopedia--and have plucked it off my shelf numerous times. I'll be doing the same with his latest effort, this Dylan encyclopedia. It is interesting that with all the Dylan books out there, it took until 2004 for something like this to appear. For the hardcore aficionado, this will be similar to Krogsgaard's Positively Bob Dylan and Heylin's Stolen Moments (as far as its usefulness), but to the casual observer it's a chance to get to know the songs Dylan has chosen to record and perform--not to mention biographical info. Photos throughout, and enough details in its 700-plus pages to keep one busy throughout 2005 (and 2006 and 2007, etc.) It's not dry either, I'd say Trager has a fondness and apprecation for the music.

A more 'definitive' encyclopedic guide .......2005-01-04
Another Bob Dylan book? Yes, and what makes Keys To The Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia a more 'definitive' encyclopedic guide than others is its descriptions of all 44 of his officially released albums including collaborative efforts, entries on over 700 songs he's recorded or performed over the length of his career, and biographical sketches of all musicians, songwriters and others associated with any of his projects, including film. And if that isn't enough... entries include track lists, musician lists, critical analysis, serial number info for all formats including cassette, and background history. It doesn't get any better - or more 'definitive' - than this.
Great Reference Material.......2004-10-15
Absolute must for all those who consider rock and roll "art", and Dylan the ultimate "artist" of the genre. A quick glance will provide such useful info that "Blonde on Blonde" was recorded in Nashville, using primarily studio musicians. Consider that the next time you listen to "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", and its haunting refrain. Only problem is that in a few years it will be out of date. Sadly, a compilation of Dylan's work will only be complete when Dylan retires which, gratefully, he shows no signs of doing anytime soon.

Another must have for Gibson lovers.......2007-05-09
A great book on Gibsons and also for references.
Good book, but I expected more.......2006-11-24
After reading Tom Wheeler's incredible 50th anniv of the Fender Strat book, I wanted to complement it with a similar book about the Les Paul. This book wasn't it. Perhaps it's because the Les Paul (guitar) story isn't quite as riveting as the Fender story, and that's not meant as a swipe. The Fender story is about Leo Fender and a few others building an empire. The Les Paul story, however, is more "corporate". There's less personal drama.
Tony Bacon does a decent job with the facts at hand, but I'm done reading the book, and I'm left wanting more. It's not a bad book, it will remain in my music book library. But I'm on the hunt for more info on the Les Paul's history.
Great summary of a great line of guitars.......2005-10-01
I've always found it fascinating that the one man who did so much for rock and roll guitar isn't a rock and roller himself. But who cares if Les Paul is a jazz or country artist? He inspired a fantastic instrument, and this is a wonderful guide to those greatest electric guitars. Highly recommended.
The succinct history of a classic model of electronic guitar.......2002-07-08
50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul by music author and guitar expert Tony Bacon is a superbly presented and succinct history of a classic model of electronic guitar invented by the legendary Les Paul and which was originally launched in 1952, going on to be favored by grand musicians throughout the last half century. Photographs enhance and illustrate this landmark presentation of the Gibson Les Paul's creation, and its prevalence in every decade to the modern day. A detailed, informative, highly readable and welcome presentation, 50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul is especially recommended for the legions of Les Paul fans and electric guitar enthusiasts.

Beautiful Women from a bygone era.......2003-07-23
Rothe presents a wonderful photographic collection of some of the great stars of burlesque's golden era. Most of the photos appear to have been promotional photos for display on marquees or in hallways of burlesque houses. All of the women are beautiful and must have been fabulous to see in performance. Rothe worked in the entertainment industry and it would be interesting for him to record his memories of these women. But until then, these photos will serve as reminders of a generation of beautiful performers.

Book Description
This history of rock music is not a history of the charts (which I consider an aberration), but a history of the great ideas introduced by rock musicians over 50 years of relentless innovation, and the history of their greatest albums (regardless of how many copies were sold). It ends up being more focused on Âalternative rock than on Âmainstream rock, simply because alternative musicians tend to be more innovative and sincere than mainstream musicians.
In a sense, rediscovering Âalternative rock and giving it its dues is also a way to restore the reputation of rock music among the more sophisticated audiences.
Today, rock music is a genre that employs sampling techniques, electronic instruments, digital/computer technology, cacophony, and ethnic sources. The roots of todayÂ's rock music lie in the technical innovations brought about in the first half of the 20th century. Therefore, my Âalternative history of rock music begins much earlier than most books on the origins of rockÂ`nÂ'roll, and covers much more territory than guitar-driven rockÂ`nÂ'roll.

most important history of popular music ever written.......2006-01-07
This most intellectually influencing book I've read this year. Though some may be turned off by Scaruffi - the ultimate rock snob (who was first a classical music snob) - I was won over by his unparalleled knowledge and analysis. This is an extremely brief history of important "popular" music after 1950. Not music that is important to the record industry or nations and cultures, but music that is important to music: its language and form. For example, Scaruffi argues that The Beatles merely wrapped pop cliches in pseudo-psychidelia, whereas Captain Beefheart wrote a post-Cage study of tonality and provided rock's most important contribution to music in Trout Mask Replica. Don't be too intimidated, though; he loves The Doors. With Scaruffi's rock history, you'll learn the origins of all the major styles (including country, electronica, hip-hop, rap, metal, world music, folk music, etc.). Sometimes, the origins are buried in a rarely-heard recording 20 years ahead of its time. If there's a fault in Scaruffi's stunning work, it's that it's too brief (even at 550+ pages); he doesn't take much space to explain just what the different styles sound like (okay, Scaruffi, what is "post-post-rock" or "jazzcore"?). Nevertheless, Scaruffi's encyclopedic knowledge and unfaltering vision have made me a convert. The free online version is fully hyperlinked to exhaustive artist profiles. I exhort you to (at the very least) read the preface to understand Scaruffi's vision of artstic rock.
Highly recommended.......2005-12-15
A long overdue history of the most important phenomenon of the 20th century. I have the house full of books on rock music: they are mostly collections of more or less fictionalized biographies. The few books that are truly "histories" are usually limited to a brief period (eg the excellent Sound of the City). As far as i know, this is the first history of the entire 50 years. Like it or not (and most people won't like what he writes about the stars of rock music), this is where rock legend ends and rock historiography begins.
My only criticism is about the title: the book covers blues, soul, hip-hop and lots of electronic/avantgarde music. Clearly much more than just "rock".
A Godsend.......2005-02-08
Really the most amazing history of rock I've ever come across. I don't really agree that this is a "listing" of all the rock musicians from 1951-2000: once I took the time to actually read it in chronological order, Scaruffi's bold, seemingly unsupported assertions about Elvis, The Beatles and others made much more sense, and I had the feeling that I really understood how rock music has evolved over the years. It can be so hard to look for all this information in other sources, and this book really layed everything out clearly.
But a warning: this is no coffee-table book - the information is presented in a no-frills, sterile way that compares to a textbook. Threre are books out there that are much more fun to read, but if you're serious about really knowing rock music, all its sub-genres and other musical styles that influenced it, this book is gold. The only down sides are its ungainly index and the density of the information... but how else does one fit so much information into one book?
i liked it.......2004-11-30
This is a book i'd recommend, whether you're a specialist (I think I am) or a novice (my sister is, and she never was into rock music before she read my copy of Scaruffi's book).
I got five shelves of books on music, and this one ranks
with the ten best. First, its comprehensive: it begins a century ago, it ends with the year 2000. That's as recent as printed books can get. That's what I wanted: not the usual "history of rock'n'roll" that starts with rock round the clock and ends with the sixties... I disagree with the reader who wrote that this book does not deal with the evolution of a style.
What it doesn't have is the "mundane" story that so many rock
historians indulge in. If you want to know what Clapton
whispered to Beck when they produced the first guitar feedback, and what they were drinking, this aint the book. But just check out the first two chapters: I had never read all this stuff about musicians who predated everything from sampling to world-music... Its also the most detailed chronicle of rap, techno and house that I have found in print (his website has a lot more, by the way).
There are two main drawbacks:
1. No index. Who was the idiot who decided that a 600-page book with thousands of names did not deserve an index of names??? I would also like an index of songs and records.
2. This should really be 2 or 3 books. If you are familiar with his website, this dude has written a lot more stuff on all the bands you can think of. The book is summarizing long bios in a few short sentences.
Still, I can't think of any book in my collection that packs so much info.
Tahnks to this book I also discovered another great book, the A bient Century (its one of the few given as biblio).
Encyclopedia.......2004-10-16
The author is certainly knowledgeable and if you are looking for an encyclopedic book which mentions all bands in last 50 years you may enjoy the book. If you are looking for a story - how certain styles developed, why were they influential - then it is a painful reading. An average paragraph mentions 4-5 band names. If you know rock music well, the book may help to remind bands you have long forgotten and help to group the bands under specific music styles. But I'm not sure that you would learn much more than that from this book.
The author also comes out with strong opinions without argumentation, e.g. Elvis Presley is one of the most overestimated musicians. This may be true, but it depends what kind of influence are we talking about - music itself, music business, youth culture. Nobody can throw out a statement like this just with one sentence.
