Exactly What I was Looking for.......2007-05-16
I started teaching myself to play the guitar about a year ago. I have learned some basic chords and a few tunes using tab. I wanted to find a way to really get to know the fretboard and learn about how different scales are made up and how solo's are put together. This book will keep me busy for years. There is so much in this book, I love it.

This book can help you only if you help yourself. If you apply what is written then it should help with your level of ability. To what level is up to you. I find it very comprehensive and worthy of its' price.
Great for TAB readers........2007-02-06
This book is great if you prefer learning scales in written TAB. I personally, associate scales better with fret board patterns and shapes rather than TAB. If I tried to switch gears and start learning additional scales with TAB, this book would be fine. But I starting learning scales by breaking down the fretboard into shapes and patterns. So if you are more of a visual person and memorizing shapes and patterns comes easier than memorizing TAB, this may not be the book for you.
Good reference book........2007-01-19
Very good book that expalains everything about guitar theory from technique to rhythm. First the author gives basic music theory, shows you all guitar techniques and variation, then comes the scales/modes and chords. In the scales section the author shows scales in all keys and also shows how to play them with rhythm. The only thing that does not quite appeal is the layout of the book, that looks very simple. If the book had a better "modern" layout, I would give it 5 stars.
Mainly it is a very good book.

Short lessons compilation from Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazine published in 1987-1990.
An interesting book plenty of ideas for expanding your musical knowledge and creativity but not a virtuoso technique book. It's approached to experiment by yourself applying the concepts explained. Many lessons don't contain examples. So don't expect to find a lot of speed, arpeggio or scale exercises as it is not that kind of book. Notice that it is not a guitar method.
Probably many musicians already know much of what is shown here but they'll surely learn some useful ideas or work in what they already know but they haven't cared of.
The table of contents is well structured but lessons are ordered chronologically which makes it less comfortable.
Useful Shortcuts to essential guitar knowledge.......2007-07-18
I have been looking for books dealing with Joe Satriani guitar technique for some time, and not really technique, but essential guitar knowledge that can be applied to any style. Speed, coordination, and theory all exist in this collection of magazine excerpts. Awesome shiz-nit.
Hard lessons.......2007-05-17
Joe Satriani is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitar players of our time, that said this book is useful yet a bit hard to get into. First of all, it consists of 40+ lessons which sounds nice, but in reality each lesson is not much more than a small blurb. The lessons are, after all, a compilation of columns that Joe wrote for a guitar magazine so they are very brief. Joe focuses very much on guitar theory and emphasizes memorization of modes and scales and memorizing the fretboard in general. I found myself reading an article, then working on the lesson for days (even months) trying to memorize different things, and it ended up feeling kind of like work instead of fun which defeats the purpose if you ask me.
Bottom line: Good insight, poor delivery.

Open tunings are awesome and fun to play around with.
Enough material in this book to keep you busy creating awesome sound and music for a lifetime.

Great guitar book!.......2005-09-10
You don't have to like Joe's music to enjoy this book. I just started playing guitar when Joe's column ended in Guitar Magazine, but those two columns I did read stuck with me forever. In this collections of all his columns, Joe will give you interesting ways to improve your improvising skills, create interesting chord progressions and ways to take things you already know and twist them into something new. This is NOT a book where Joe shows us how to play excertps of his songs, but more like what those lessons he gave to Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai must have been like.

tiny font and sparse tabs.......2005-10-29
This book does seem fairly accurate, but a warning for other tab readers (versus music readers): This book has the tiniest font ever! I have perfect vision and sometimes I misread it. Also, this book might require some ability to read music (rhythm notation). I know music theory but reading tabs is so much easier!
Basically, this publisher has their style which I find much less readable and logical than say, Hal Leonard "Recorded Versions Guitar" or Play It Like It Is Guitar "Note-for-note transcriptions" publications that are much more common.
This publishing style has no advantage over the earlier two mentioned and the earlier two lack nothing this OK Computer book has. Meaning: if you want to have the clearest possible transcriptions for guitar for this or any album, go find a Hal Leonard "Recorded Versions Guitar" or Play It Like It Is Guitar "Note-for-note transcriptions" publication. The problem is, older books are often hard to find!

A great companion for all fans of OK Computer.......1999-10-03
If you play guitar and dig Radiohead, get this book. It's got the music and arrangements for all the songs on OK computer in a fairly legible tab format. It's a bit different from other tab books I have, but it's fairly easy to get the hang of. The album's guitar work is so dense, I really benefitted from seeing all the notes laid out in front of me, especially for paranoid android. While I still can't follow the picking pattern exactly, I can fake it pretty well!

Tab books...specifically the radiohead ones, started me teaching myself the guitar, and its been lots of fun!! its just soo great to feel the satisfaction of playing your favourite songs.
A Good Source for Guitar Tabs.......1998-12-29
A lot of guitar tablature on the internet is often wrong, if not incomplete. This book provides sheet music for all of OK Computer, in both tab form and regular musical notation. For guitarists and fans of radiohead, its worth the buy.

Good Introduction to Classical Guitar.......2005-03-25
I'm a self-taught guitarist who has played for 20 years and have mostly played lead guitar in pop/rock/blues bands as hobby. A few years ago I bought a nice classical guitar and decided to learn some pieces when I came across this book.
Since then I have played almost every song in this book. There are a lot of short pieces that beginners will be able to play easily and some more challenging pieces for intermediate players.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn some classical guitar who doesn't read music (tablature is provided).

Best for an intermediate player even though includes tab. I like this book, it is a good book for an advanced beginner or intermediate player but has plenty of challenges. My only wish is that it could include a CD so I could hear how the music is supposed to sound. However, since these songs are classics most student probably have a cd or two with many of these songs.
I am glad I purchased this book. Its also priced right.

This was the best music book that I have purchased over the past 25 years as a guitar player. I was hesitant to purchase a music book online and my expectations were low. Suprisingly though, it has provided a great selection of songs sorted chronologically by classical music historical periods together with those musicians with great influence on classical guitar. It was simple enough for a intermediate non-classical guitar player like myself and yet could be used by an advanced beginner or a very experienced guitar player. Today, I have learned 15 songs well and look forward to another 20 from this book in the coming year. Some of my best songs, from all styles of guitar playing, are now from this book. Many finger picking arrangements and styles are poor at best. The arrangements in this book are great. This book is well worth the money.

I don't think this book "sux ", at least I tried to see if it did, and it did not. That was not an advertised feature so I won't consider this a bad thing.
Yes there is tablature. Does this make the music any less useful? I think not. If you can read music notation well enough to play the music presented, then do so. I can't do it well enough or fast enough to suite me. Some day I will. In the meantime I use tablature and progress in my guitar playing technique. Granted, my sight reading and music writing does not improve when I use tablature, but that is my choice.
I learn to love music, all kinds, using tablature, then as I progress music theory and music notation make more sense to me. Now I've decided that I want to learn to read standard music notation. No harm at all in that course.
Not all who play the guitar play in orchestras or bands that require notation. I play for personal enjoyment, not for the edification of people who judge music by the format it is published in.
A similar concept can be seen in the medieval catholic church, where latin (not even the original language the bible was written in!) was the only language that the bible was available in. Most people could not read, and those that could, could not read latin (for the most part). Does that make the bible appropriate for priests only (personally I think so, but my point meant to say NO)?
I liked the pieces presented in this book. They were easy to play (for the most part) and stimulated my interest in classical guitar playing (I think that was the point of the book no?).
One of the disadvantages of not reading music notation (well enough or not at all) is that I cannot accurately reproduce the music without having heard it before. I can approximate and I sometimes luck out and it sounds as it should. Here is my only suggestion for this book--Notation and a CD should be packaged together. This way you can learn to play the music properly. The alternative of course is to learn to read the music notation which would give you most of what you need to play it without the CD. The tablature would then only be used then for finger positioning suggestions from Mr Harris.
