    Book Description

Hit the lights and jump in the fire, you 're about to enter the School of Rock! Today 's lecture will be a crash course in brain surgery. This hard and fast lesson is taught by instructors who graduated from the old school -they actually paid $5.98 for The $5.98 EP. But back before these philosophy professors cut their hair, they were lieutenants in the Metal Militia.Metallica is the "thinking man 's " metal band and the headbanger 's CNN. Snobs and music critics have often dismissed Metallica as mindless noise; we 're here to set the record straight. "In pursuit of truth no matter where it lies, " this book considers questions that philosophers have been pondering for ages, including: Does Metallica 's music provide an Aristotelian catharsis or does it just make kids go postal? Can "Fade to Black " save you from suicide? Are we all in the "Sanitarium "? How can we "Escape " to be free? What can Nietzsche tell us about the God That Failed? What can Descartes and "One " tell us about the relationship between the mind and the body? Did Lars make a sound argument against Napster?Metallica is more than just a band, and this book is much more than just a ticket to ride down memory lane. This is an in-depth analysis of the soundtrack to your life. So start your CD player, fire up your iPod, or, better yet, break out the old vinyl. We 're going ' for a ride with the four horsemen, and a few philosophers too.

    5 out of 5 stars Philosophy & Metal Rocks!.......2007-06-25

I was given this book by the Editor Bill Irwin & had A Crash Course in reading it! I had 4 days to finish it, what pressure! This books contains 20 essays from 20 different perspectives & although I did not agree w/ some of them I agreed w/ most especially the essay by Rachel Sotos, you will have to buy the book to read her essay, but I related to what she had to say.

The premise of the book is taking the lyrics of Metallica's songs & trying to portray what Jaymz Hetfield was feeling/thinking when he wrote them & analyzing what it all means. This book is meant to get you thinking & to open your mind. They touch on all of Metallica's albums including St. Anger, which is not a favorite among many including me, but reading the lyrics & the analagy makes me think that I should give St. Anger yet another listen to find my own analagy.

This was a great book & I suggest everyone to read it whether you are a Metal Head or not! Metallica fans will LOVE this!

5 out of 5 stars Metallica is GREAT and so is this BOOK!!!.......2007-06-08

I started listening to Metallica in my teens shortly after the release of RTL. I even quoted Motorbreath in my high school yearbook. At the time listening to Metallica and "acting like a maniac" is what came natural to me. Who would have ever thought I was such an existentialist?

I always felt a deep connection to their music, but at that time I didn't even know what philospohy really meant. Metallica's lyrics provoked my thoughts and the raw power of their music just always felt right to me. So if you were like me ,you didn't get into Metallica to be philosophical. That's not what we were about.

I first picked up this book hoping that philosopy would validate the music of my youth. But as I got into it I soon remembered that I didn't listen to Metallica for anyone's approval. Back in the day I could care less what "other people thought" about most things. And in the end I realized that it's not Philosphy that validates the music. Metallica's lyrics, their music, and most importantly their fans are what validate Philosophy. Somehow I think we knew that all along.

This book was an enjoyable read and helped me realize important things about myself and the music that I love. If you're story is similiar to mine, go ahead and "Jump in the Fire". You want be disappointed with this book.

    3 out of 5 stars Sloppy Transcriptions.......2004-12-13

Of Metallica's first 5 albums, this songbook probably suffers the worst from transcription errors. The first printing of the book was released less than a month after the album was, so if you consider the time it took to transcribe, typeset, edit and get it printed, this was a rush job. The Unforgiven suffers the most in the book in terms of accuracy (the verse riff is so very wrong), while Sad But True has a few problems as well. Is anyone ever going to transcribe the eerie micro-tonal slide part of the chorus?

I don't know if subsequent printings have corrected some of the errors or not, but I do know that Guitar For the Practicing Musician (who were involved with the early Metallica songbooks) did release a 'Metallica Special' magazine that corrected the Unforgiven and Blackened (from AJFA), as well as a corrected version of Sad But True in their monthly magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Review.......2003-05-30

Not necessarily a tab book to own in order to play the songs off the "Black" album. However, the "Black" tab book is definitely a must-buy for not only the avid Metallica muso-fan, but for those wishing to upskill themselves in various guitar techniques.

As mentioned elsewhere, take all tabs with a grain of salt, however, the solos are a near-enough note-by-note transcription and each riff is intricately tabbed to include even the most subtle of variations.

Includes a very well-written introduction, outlining some very important and helpful tips to assist you in your mastery of one of Metllica's finest albums.

    In a one-line verdict: A definite must-have, even as a collector's item!

I was given this book as a present. The book explains very well but it could be more in depth descriptions. It doesn't show you how to move the wah pedal, it just says w/wah. Overall this book is very good for the beginner guitarist. If the author could make this book again they should have performace notes on all of the songs.

3 out of 5 stars Tabs are a bit off.......2005-10-14

Lets get one thing straight: I love metallica!
But, this book has one mayor error:
some of the written tabs are incorrect, not in notes but in sound.
..Just sit down with this book and practice then you will figure out a lot more better and faster ways to play a certain lick etc. It is 75% correct. Otherwise a good book with nice pictures.

    5 out of 5 stars Solid transcriptions.......2005-01-09

The Master of Puppets songbook from Cherrylane is actually pretty good as far as these items go. It's fairly accurate, even for some of the more complex sections. However, The Thing That Should Not Be is notated in drop D-tuning, when the whole guitar is actually tuned down to D -- but the actual notes appear correct despite this error. I like the fact that some of bassist Cliff Burton's leads (Orion and the intro to Damage Inc.) were incuded as well. You can nit-pick about some the positons in the tabulature, but as long as the notes are right, who cares?

Much like any tablature book on the market, you have to take the info within the book with a grain of salt.
These tabs are not transcribed by the actual musicians, but by people trying to figure out the easiest way to play these songs.
With that in mind - upon viewing the S&M video, I discovered that "The Thing that Should Not Be" is not in drop-D tuning as the book says, but rather in standard tuning tuned down a whole step (much like "Sad but True" or "Whiskey in the Jar" or "Sabbra Cadabra")- as far as I can tell, the only Drop-D tuning song that the mighty metallica does is "-human" from the afore-mentioned S&M.
these books are great to help you through trouble spots when you are trying to figure out certain difficult passages, but nothing beats figuring it out for yourself.
Still... could not have figured out some of the parts from this momentous album without the help of this book (especially considering what a novice I was when I first bought this - remember kids - downstrokes only... otherwise you won't be as cool as your Uncle James)

One of the most important scientific classics of all time, this 1556 work on mining was the first based on field research and observation and the methods of modern science. 289 authentic Renaissance woodcuts. Translated by Herbert Hoover. Reprint of English (1912) edition.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Vast Information, Increadable Woodcuts.......2006-01-15

This book is not a simple read for those looking for the basics, it a detailed review of the process of mining in the 16th Century throughout Germany with the inclusion of some surrounding regions. All aspects of the search for and creation of metals are covered from how to determine where a vein of materials is most likely to be found thru the methods of ore refinement and ingot production. The footnotes are incredibly helpful and sometimes (necessarily) take up more space than the text they refer to. This is not a basic overview, it is a manual designed to educate in specifics.

As a reference this text is wonderful. The woodcuts alone provide a review of the methods and technology used that is more detailed than any other source I have found - although I am admittedly a novice in this particular field of study in Early Modern German History. As an amateur historian I would say that this manuscript is not a `friendly' read for a general audience, however as a reference for those deeply interested in the subject of mining or Early Modern German metal working it is invaluable. Great companion for Pyrotechnica.

5 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: A Humanist's Industrial Handbook.......2003-10-13

Georg Pawer was an extremely well educated German in the Humanist tradition of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It was natural that he turned his Greco-German name into Greco-Latin, labeling himself Georgius Agricola. Both versions mean Farmer (Georgios) Farmer (Pawer = Bauer / Agricola). He was a physician by profession. Neither side of his background would seem to suit him to write one of the great books on mining and the refining of ores, but as an official town physician, responsible for treating miners at no additional charge, he seems to have won their trust. The result was a manual, aimed not at people who would have to dig up ores, but at potential investors, and officials and lawyers, who would have to deal with financing, administration and litigation. He set out the basic customs and practices of mining, described the remarkably elaborate machines needed to keep mines dry and ventilated, and processing and refining, with their devices and chemicals. Naturally, he wrote it in the language of real scholarship, Latin, not sixteenth-century German.

Since surviving classical Latin is not abundantly supplied with appropriate technical terms, and those which exist are not always clear, the resulting text was soon found to present formidable difficulties, despite important aids from accompanying illustrations. There were early attempts at translating it into German, and even a rendering into Chinese (an early attempt to emulate the mysterious Occidentals and their terror-weapons), but when this translation appeared in 1912, German scholars were humiliated to find that they had been outclassed by a couple of mere "Englanders". They were probably even less happy to find that the translators were Americans.

Actually, Lou Henry Hoover, a good classicist, made a perfect team with her husband, the mining engineer Herbert Hoover, who was shortly to become much better known for humanitarian relief work, and an unhappy experience as President of the United States. The engineering half of the partnership knew what the problems were, and the sort of thing that Agricola must have been trying to say, and the classicist could tell whether the vocabulary and grammar could carry that meaning. The result was a book which was not only beautiful, with its reproductions of the original illustrations, but a genuine contribution to the history of technology.

The Dover reprinting of 1950 was one of the first, if not the first, of that publisher's adventures in bringing important works back into print, in attractive editions, at reasonable prices. It remains a gem, whether regarded from points of view of the history of technology, of art, or of Renaissance Humanism. The only thing missing is Agricola's companion treatise on other hazards of mining, like kobolds and other malicious spirits (yes, I am serious; he had lots of testimony from honest miners, after all).

Of course, nothing human is perfect, and there are some hints of why such a practical man as Herbert Hoover, with a real concern for human suffering, proved so doctrinaire in the face of the Depression. At one point, the Hoovers scold the Romans for concentrating on German metal resources, instead of trying to build up the only true source of wealth, Agriculture. A lovely sentiment, very eighteenth-century Physiocratic, but it did not seem to occur to them that any agricultural surplus would have had to be shipped down the Rhine, into the North Sea, and around Europe, to be of any immediate benefit to Rome. If it stayed in Germany, it would just feed more nasty, Roman-hating Germans -- so much better to concentrate on something more compact and worth carrying across the Alps, or at least useful for arming the Legions. (Of course, there are also the problems of whether Italian agricultural techniques were of any value in the Rhine valley, and why the Germans had not learned appropriate methods from the neighboring Gauls -- but that leads in other directions.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent attention to detail of ancient mining practices.......1999-05-20

This book is a great read. The sections are well defined to cover each topic, including measurements where applicable and even the definition of tracts and management of said lands. He has written other books too. I hope they reprint the translations soon.

5 out of 5 stars essential reading for students of technological history.......1999-01-11

This early work describes the thinking of early technologists and shows the development of materials technology and related engineering knowledge of the late 15th century. Of particular interest is the detailed research done by Herbert Hoover, former President and mining engieer. His research is detailed in extensive foot notes. The illustrations are exact copies of the originals. Some of the early chapters are the most intersting reading because of the insights gained into archaic thinking that extrapolates to modern times.

    5 out of 5 stars A superbly illustrated classic.......1998-12-27

This is one of the great classics, richly illustrated with over 200 woodcuts, most full page. It was published in 1556 by Georgius Agricola. The English translation is by former U.S. President Herbert Hoover, and first Lady Lou. Virtually all of the equipment illustrated was current until a few decades ago. Agricola describes and illustrates such "modern" methods as amalgamation, and the use of spiral inclines for transporting heavy equipment from the surface to underground. The (unnamed) "books" (chapters) which compose the book could be titled: 1 The Social Impact of Mining; 2 Mine Management, Exploration, and Prospecting; 3 The Theory of Ore Deposits; 4 Mining Law; 5 Shaft Sinking, Drifting, and Surveying; 6 Mining Equipment, Haulage, Dewatering, Ventilation, and Hazards; 7: Assaying; 8 Beneficiation; 9 Smelting; 10 Separation of Gold from Silver and Silver Refining; 11 Separation of Gold and Silver from Copper and Iron and Copper Refining; 12 Industrial Mineral, Chemical, and Glass Production. The text is a bit dense, but is worth the trouble.

      Book Description

Damage Incorporated: Metallica and the Production of Musical Identity offers an interdisciplinary study investigating a range of topics that intersect in the music and cultural influence of Metallica. As part of a collection of heavy metal bands-among them Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth-grouped together under the rubric "thrash metal," Metallica's music presents a number of avenues for investigation. Specifically, Damage Incorporated focuses on identity in popular music as a set of performing conventions, with Metallica's place within certain conventions of genre, race, and gender serving as a constant impetus. The book also engages broadly with larger questions of the politics of culture, American history, musical analysis, and the character of musical discourses in the context of commerce. An essential book for students of popular culture, mass media, and music, Damage Incorporated sets a new standard for the study and exploration of issues of class, gender, and race in popular music. About the Author Glenn T. Pillsbury is a recent Ph.D. in Musicology from UCLA and a rising star in the field of popular music studies. He is the author of the "Metallica" chapter in the Encyclopedia Britannica, a founding editor of the online journal ECHO, and a regular presenter of papers at major scholarly meetings in music and the arts.

If you are learning to play drums (or play drums already) and are a big metallica fan, then you should play like Lars himself. And this is a great way for you to learn his drumming. And as many Metallica fans know this is one there best CDs so learn to play your favorite songs and have fun. I really recommend this book to any Metallica fan who wants to play the drums like Lars.

      5 out of 5 stars Fairly Accurate.......2005-01-09

Again, like the Master of Puppets and Kill'em All folios, the notations are fairly accurate and there aren't any noticeably major errors in this book. Note position choice is sometimes a little odd, but the notes are correct. This is an excellent book to learn a lot of the early Metallica guitar techniques, as long as you down-pick most of the rhythm parts (Creeping Death won't sound the same without it).

4 out of 5 stars This book rocks........2004-03-30

I got this because I really wanted to learn the songs on Ride the Lightning that I couldn't figure out myself and the solos as well; I was surprised by how accurate the tab was for the main body of each song and on Kirk's main parts. However, there are a few problems with this book. First, for a lot of the solos you are expected to play up on the 20th fret even if you're not on one of the top two strings; this is a problem for me because I only have an acoustic guitar, I can play it fine on my friend's electric. Also, the fingerings are harder than they ought to be in places of "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", and a few other songs. Last, this book is not for the average guitar player. It takes a lot of skill and speed-picking to nail those solos, all of which I haven't gotten quite yet. However, overall I definetely recommend this tab book because Metallica kicks ass!

The Ride tab book is definitely a must-buy for not only the avid Metallica muso-fan, but for those wishing to upskill themselves in various guitar techniques.

Includes a very well-written introduction, outlining some very important and helpful tips to assist you in your mastery of one of Metllica's finest albums.
