Book Description

Audio productions are made or broken by the quality of the recording engineer's ears. The ability to properly discern sounds, identify subtle problems, and act accordingly to apply the necessary fix makes all the difference in the quality of the final tracks and master. The good news is that these crucial skills can be learned. The ability to instantly identify frequencies, hear hidden distortions, and instinctively reconcile conflicts in the EQ of instruments, audio elements, vocals and more are traits of those who have mastered the art of audio production. The best engineers have trained their ears to immediately recognize audio problems that the consumer and those new to recording arts would likely not hear, but that, if left unresolved, would result in an amateurish final product. Through hundreds of illustrations and an accompanying disc containing high-resolution MP3 files with nearly five hours of narration of the entire course, you can acquire the audio discernment skills of a seasoned recording engineer by studying this course at your own pace, in your own home.

5 out of 5 stars A top pick for both students and aspiring audio engineers........2006-10-15

The ability of the audio engineer to identify frequencies, hear hidden distortions and reconcile conflicts can make or break a career; but how can such skills be taught? Critical Listening Skills For Audio Professionals is one sure method for gaining expertise: it pairs an audio cd of high-resolution MP3 files containing nearly five hours of narration of the entire course with a text identifying critical listening skills. Students of the author's courses have tested and developed their own skills on the area based on the contents here, but the price tag is affordable enough for non-college aspiring pros to benefit from. A top pick for both students and aspiring audio engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Book Updated and Inexpensive.......2006-08-16

This book starts out by saying that the maestro on the podium, the recording engineer, and the experienced music critic have suffieiently trained ears to judge if the sound quality of music is acceptable. The beginning student may well have ears that are just as good, perhaps even better, than these professionals. The student can hear, but doesn't know how to listen.

This book is on listening. It is based on the courses the author developed to teach listening. The first half of the book is on the training the ears to detecting the changes in sound frequency, level, band limitations, irregularities, distortion, noise, etc. The second part is more on the psychoacoustics, the human auditory system. Of particular interest in this section is the understanding of the part that perception plays in the hearing of sounds.

The CD included with the book contains some eighteen lectures that essentially make up a course in listening.

This book is based on and expanded from previous books from the author. These earlier books have long been out of print and difficult to find. This new edition has been updated and priced at a price anyone can afford.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I was Looking for.......2007-05-16

I started teaching myself to play the guitar about a year ago. I have learned some basic chords and a few tunes using tab. I wanted to find a way to really get to know the fretboard and learn about how different scales are made up and how solo's are put together. This book will keep me busy for years. There is so much in this book, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that doesnt leave you starving for information.......2007-03-17

I just got this book and absolutely love it! I needed something that would not leave me hanging in the breeze for information, plenty of practice, challenge, education and fun! Thanks for putting this book together.

5 out of 5 stars Learn and apply.......2007-02-18

This book can help you only if you help yourself. If you apply what is written then it should help with your level of ability. To what level is up to you. I find it very comprehensive and worthy of its' price.

3 out of 5 stars Great for TAB readers........2007-02-06

This book is great if you prefer learning scales in written TAB. I personally, associate scales better with fret board patterns and shapes rather than TAB. If I tried to switch gears and start learning additional scales with TAB, this book would be fine. But I starting learning scales by breaking down the fretboard into shapes and patterns. So if you are more of a visual person and memorizing shapes and patterns comes easier than memorizing TAB, this may not be the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book........2007-01-19

Very good book that expalains everything about guitar theory from technique to rhythm. First the author gives basic music theory, shows you all guitar techniques and variation, then comes the scales/modes and chords. In the scales section the author shows scales in all keys and also shows how to play them with rhythm. The only thing that does not quite appeal is the layout of the book, that looks very simple. If the book had a better "modern" layout, I would give it 5 stars.
Mainly it is a very good book.

    Book Description

Professional Piano Teaching, is designed to serve as a basic text for a first-semester piano pedagogy course. It provides an introduction to the profession, an overview of learning principles, a thorough approach to all aspects of teaching beginners and elementary students, and a detailed analysis of the business aspects of independent teaching. Special topics related to group teaching, teaching preschool students and evaluation of teaching also are included. Its thorough treatment of subject matter makes it useful for pedagogy students, new teachers, university graduates with little or no pedagogy coursework, and teachers who have had limited opportunity for advanced training. Due to its comprehensive approach, experienced teachers will also find it filled with helpful hints to enhance their skills.

The book deals not only with what to teach, but with how to teach and solve problems in teaching. Teachers will be able to apply the principles that are discussed to real situations that they encounter on a daily basis. Actual teaching problems are discussed and workable solutions are offered for them. Numerous musical examples are used to illustrate the discussions. For copyright reasons, most musical examples were chosen from materials published or distributed by Alfred Publishing Company. Because bibliographies quickly become outdated and new teaching materials appear with regularity, specific lists of materials are limited. In addition, computer and keyboard technology has not been treated as a separate chapter in the book. Because of the rapidly changing technology, general applications are suggested throughout the text as appropriate.

For the beginning pedagogy class, it is recommended that students study Chapters 1-8 in order. By following this order, they explore the field in a systematic way, learning:

, what it means to become a professional piano teacher (Chapter 1)
, principles of learning applied to piano teaching (Chapter 2)
, how to choose a beginning piano method (Chapter 3)
, elementary teaching concepts and common problems of beginners (Chapter 4)
, specifics of teaching rhythm and reading (Chapter 5)
, specifics of teaching technique and musical sound development (Chapter 6)
, how to choose repertoire and present it (Chapter 7)
, how to develop musicality in students (Chapter 8)

The special topics in the book can be integrated into the class according to the preference of the teacher, the length of the term and the needs of the student. These topics include:

, an exploration of group teaching (Chapter 9)
, a philosophical and practical discussion about teaching preschoolers (Chapter 10)
, the business aspects of teaching piano (Chapter 11)
, suggestions for observing and evaluating lessons (Chapter 12)

In Chapter 11 (Business Aspects of Teaching), samples of professional forms, studio policies, brochures, business cards and ads are given. The publisher hereby grants the purchaser of this book permission to use and adapt these forms for personal and professional purposes.

Chapter 12 (Evaluation of Teaching) should be studied as soon as pedagogy students start to observe experienced teachers and begin their own student teaching.

Important points covered in each chapter are summarized at the end of the chapter. These summary points can be used in the pedagogy classroom for starting classroom discussions of key topics. In addition, projects that build on the teaching principles introduced in the chapter are suggested for both new teachers and experienced teachers. Pedagogy teachers can assign or adapt those projects that are appropriate for students in their classes.

The quest for improvement of piano teaching skills never ends. Whether you are beginning the journey as a new teacher with this book or whether you are an experienced teacher refining your skills, the author wishes you continued success as you pursue your career in professional piano teaching.

    Book Description

Written as a music theory text that not only addresses the important fundamental syntax of music in the classical sense but also relates this syntax to current practices and styles, this book should be particularly well-suited to musicians focusing on aspects of the music business and of popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars Commercial music textbook primarily for classroom use.......1999-01-06

With this 1995 title, Ardsley House continues its bid to introduce a complete quality line of university-level music industry textbooks. Unlike texts or popular books which subtly suggest that songwriters and media-oriented music makers might be able to get by with a little less traditional theory, author Richard Sorce, from New York University, where leading programs in both musical theater and commercial music can now be found, heads in the other direction, saying, "There is no quick method of becoming a competent composer, songwriter, arranger, orchestrator, harmonist, improvisor, or theorist." This book, then, is a map of the high road, for commercial musicians who want to make every theory stop along the way. The author's philosophy is that the music of the common practice period (1650-1875?) guides not only classically-oriented musicians, but all music practitioners. "Whether a performer, writer, arranger, recording engineer, or publishing agent, the professional musician must know the componenets of music if he or she expects to sustain a successful career." Sorce has thus taken the stand of a purist, and many competent commercial practitioners may disagree. But on the other hand, so many young musicians begin careers, knowing how to do a few things well, but then, when their careers take the inevitable turn toward film scoring or other larger works, they find themselves relatively clueless. That's where this book can help. Take pages 180 and 181, for example: I get all excited seeing Bach's "Chorale No.15" from "St. John Passion," side by side with Paul Simon's "Stranded in a Limousine," with both of them harmonized using popular music chord symbols. I'm hoping that teachers of commercial music will gradually adopt this rather rigorous text, which sets a new benchmark in the field of theory for the commercial musician. Book Description

`The academy - love it or leave it'. Professional Correctness is a brilliant analysis of the fierce debate in literary and cultural studies between those who want interpretive work to influence political issues and those who fear that this would destroy the essence of literary criticism. It argues that movements such as the new historicism, gender studies, or cultural studies can change the objects of their attention, change their vocabularies, change the scope of their claims, indeed change their very names, but nothing they do will bring them into closer contact with the larger structures they would transform. The moral, Fish says, is that if you want to do work that will reach a larger audience and resound beyond the academy, get out of it.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars When Does Literary Criticism "Make a Difference"?.......2007-09-03

Based on Fish's Clarendon Lectures at Oxford in May 1993, this book is a defense of academic professionalism and its modest reward -- the pleasure of interpretation. Fish is highly critical of academic literary critics who wish to extend their interpretive practice into political or cultural criticism. His basic point is that such efforts are bound to fail because the actual engines of political and social change in this country (government, law, etc.) are decidedly uninterested in what literary critics have to say on such matters. Rather than continue to court such failure, Fish encourages critics to find justification and pleasure in what they've been trained to do: read and interpret texts.

Fish is fun to read as an agent provocateur. But one should always remember that Fish is, first and foremost, a polemicist -- he's not interested in nuance and compromise but rather is intent on making a point, come what may. And the "point" Fish tries to make in this book isn't exactly persuasive. He has difficulty coming to terms with the fact that literary criticism's taking up of social issues (queer identities, black protest, etc.) in the 1990s have, in fact, had a profound effect on the way those issues are framed and debated in American culture at large. Fish is also curiously silent on the ways in which teachers of literature exert a certain degree of influence among non-professionals in the classroom. After all, pedagogy is one of the primary methods by which literary scholarship is usefully "translated" from academese into the language of everyday critical thinking. What our students take away from that pedagogical experience is difficult to calibrate, but it's hardly "meaningless" in the sense of "not making a difference" (whatever that difference is) in their lives.

In the end, Professional Correctness makes an interesting but ultimately unpersuasive case for the uselessness of literary criticism beyond the walls of academe. Some of Fish's critiques of academic overreaching are valid (as matters of bad interpretation), but at the same time they're desperately ignorant of the manifold ways in which literary critics do, in fact, however modestly and indirectly, shape the circulation of ideas in our society.

4 out of 5 stars The Plot Thickens.......1999-10-14

Perhaps the most interesting distinction Stanley Fish makes in this book is the one between what he calls "plot-thinking" and "being-thinking," if I remember the terms well enough. The first sort is a kind of tactical thinking--what do I need to do to get my points across right now? The second is a bit slower, it is the sort of thinking that says "what do I need to do for myself, given the sort of person I am?" Essentially, what Fish is saying is a kind of lecture of the "new historicists" and the other radicalisms that have become so important in the academy. A great many of course will hate him for saying this, becauseit means a delay in the sort of confrontation with Power that so many seem to desire these days. The theory operating for these people is that our metaphors are bad, and thus we must change them, which is why we need writers. This, or so it seems to me, is a very American sort of solution, yet it does not appear to bother the new historicists, nor do they appear to care about the destruction of the liberal, reasonably well-read public that used to form the backbone of support for leftist causes--schoolteachers, social workers, etc.--that is proceeding today as those who might have entered into such careers in previous times are relentlessly told that their work simply serves to reinforce "the Anglo-Saxon warrior brotherhood" that apparently runs things around here, at least according to one of these scholars. For all anyone knows, of course, this might be true, but to give young people the choice between being English professor and being a tool of power is not, I don't think anyway, very helpful. Stanley Fish's counsel of moderation, therefore, is I think of great value, which is to say that even if inside the academy he is thought of as someone who does not respect difference, from the outside looking in he looks a lot better than some I could name. Anyway, in the days to come, which are increasingly looking like they will be made up of a vast, illiterate population ruled by an equally illiterate stockbroker class, policed by a group of "discourse specialists" whose job it will be to censor the books and declare their meanings too obscure for the public, which come to think of it is what we have now, Stanley Fish might be remembered by some few of us as, perhaps, the last man to write in English.

5 out of 5 stars THE BIBLE OF MUSIC CONDUCTING.......2005-09-24

Just purchased this rightoff on Alibris and was real excited to read this even tho I'm into music conducting, arranging, writing, hearing by ear, all of it.

This is deeply a Music Must if u're interested of being a most-talented musician, bandleader, music director, conductor, and/or just trying it out for practice.

Alot of people been recommend 'cuz the man himself Brock Elheran tells it right here from the heart and it's rocks on to this day 4ward.

I just begun conducting while in high school with the band and duggin' up everybody who can do that. I'm also a talented musician myself so ya'll know the basics 'bout that. I look 4ward of reading more books like this in the future and 'mos definitely on arranging, composing, orchestration, theory, composition, leadership, music production, all of the above.

5 out of 5 stars Clear diagrams; easy to read.......2004-06-27

This book has become a common introductory text for undergraduate level conducting gesture in the United States. In this respect, the book is extremely effective.

McElheran's treatise is laid out in ultra-clear chapters, all of which are concise and contain possible "Assignments." Not to get too bogged down in the mire of conducting gesture, McElheran's first chapter is on Inspiration. In short, "make the performers want to do their best," he says.

The next few chapters cover aspects such as the baton, beat patterns, the left hand, dynamics and other aspects of music, cues, off-beat accents, fermatas, and some aspects about rehearsals and performance. There are more chapters but you get the picture. All are good.

Some readers may wonder if this is meant for "orchestral" or "choral" conducting. McElheran states clearly that there is (or should be) little difference and that choral conductors should develop an orchestral technique. While I would say that good choral and orchestral conducing are about 95 % similar (perhaps even more so), choral conductors should be aware that there are some differences, especially in ideas of always "hitting the imaginary table" or conducting every single beat. Nonetheless, Conducting Technique can be very helpful for the beginning choral conductor.

Moreover, McElheran's writing style is very fresh and full of self-effacing wit. Reading the book gives one the impression that Brock McElheran is the type of person who takes the art of music seriously but not himself seriously. I think any beginner of conducting should consult this book, and even professionals might want to have it around just as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars studied with Brock.......2004-05-29

I'm proud to say that I studied with Brock. He is an amazing conductor with great passion for music. While his book was required reading for his undergraduate conducting class, his concepts are used every day is my choral rehearsals. I've been conducting for 12 years now, and know that his concepts and rehearsal techniques have served me well. A very simple, concise, and practical guide by an incredible teacher and conductor.

      5 out of 5 stars Utterly Brilliant!.......2002-07-07

This is the best book for technique I've come across, period. The style is not unnecessarily abtruse and the clarity of the book in explanation is magnificent. What appealed to me is the fact that logical, scientific explanations are given for most of the technique encompassed, and the author does not take refuge in 'tradition'. It is as suited to the absolute beginner as it is to the professional looking to polish his/her tehnique.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, challenging, and a great comfort.......2002-04-10

I bought this book shortly after I'd agreed to conduct an adult community choir, and studied it with fearful concentration through the first tentative weeks while the choir and I developed some trust in each other's good will and ignorance. I'm still a novice conductor, but I've now stood in front of some big groups of singers, experienced and beginners, and I trust this book. Even when it's not hidden in the music in front of me.

There's room for argument with some of what McElheran says, and I haven't yet seen a choral conductor who works as he recommends, but the book is clear, sensible, brief, and practical. What's more, it's in better shape than most of my music, although it's travelled further and lived rougher.

I've found the exercises very useful, especially those with "a group of friends". I tried these with my novice choir, in a spirit of "let's explore", and we all learnt from them.

Warmly recommended for anyone interested in conducting, even those who are not about to try their hand, with or without baton, at it.
