Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Blue Hat, Green Hat is all about getting dressed, and stars a very silly turkey who just doesn't get it. (Feet in the hat, pants on the head, etc.) His continuing refrain is "Oops." Moo, Baa, LA LA LA! investigates the sounds animals make, including pigs who sing. Doggies is "a counting and barking book" about the many sounds dogs can make, and A to Z frolics through the alphabet with amusing animal antics from an aardvark admiring to a zebra zigzagging. Parents love Boynton as much as kids do, and these four books in a compact boxed set will no doubt become household favorites! (Baby to age 3) --Marcie Bovetz

4 out of 5 stars love the author.......2007-07-16

We have fallen in love with these books. My son loves them and we have fun reading them with him. I didn't give 5 stars because we only really use 2 of the books. "Moo Baa LaLa" is my sons favorite. He loves the sounds the animals make and he enjoys hearing opps on "Blue Hat Green Hat". The other 2 just aren't as easy to read. We are looking forward to getting the volume 2. I think there are more "story" books in there.

5 out of 5 stars Babies and Toddlers Truly Enjoy These Books.......2007-05-28

My 8 month old and my 2 year old really love these books. They are creative, fun and most of them rhyme. These books help teach your child the colors, letters, animal sounds and much more. My husband and I have "Moo, Baa, La La La" memorized because it has been a favorite of my daughters for some time now. Sandra Boynton books are fabulous and sometimes even humorous.

5 out of 5 stars Grandchildren love them.......2007-05-07

I purchased these for my grand daughter who is 3 years old and she loves to sit and read them to me. The books are very sturdy so they should hold up to some abuse. The stories are short, funny and colorful. Just what you need for a busy little kid.

The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animals certainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that." The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." In the rhyming reader But Not the Hippopotamus, a hippo finds himself on the outs as "a cat and two rats are trying on hats. / But not the hippopotamus. / A moose and a goose together have juice. / But not the hippopotamus." Rest assured the hippo finds love at the end. (Baby to preschool) --Claire Dederer

5 out of 5 stars 4 great books.......2007-09-03

The Going to Bed book is my son's favorite of all time and all of the books' clever sing-song rhymes make even adult readers smile- like when they all go up to exercise after they've bathed and brushed their teeth.

1 out of 5 stars Pick and Choose your Boyntons.......2007-09-03

Sadly, not only our toddler (18 mos) but we parents, as readers, were disappointed in this Boynton collection, Although the title of "Greatest Hits" implied that these books were among children's favorites. We have found this not to be true. While reading the books aloud they do not have the lyrical magic of other Boynton's like "Hippos Go Berserk," "Snuggle Puppy," "Barnyard Dance, " or "Moo, Baa, La La La!." Sandra Boynton has the gift of creating language and drawings that touch children's imaginations. These books aren't the best examples of that talent. Buy Boynton, but buy other books instead of her Greatest Hits, Vol. II.

5 out of 5 stars Boynton's Books.......2007-07-16

I bought these books and a 'horned'stuffed animal for a baby shower gift. I like to give books for little ones. They don't out grow them right away. Always been a fan of this author. Very funny and cute pictures.

I purchased this set for my 10 month old daughter. They are sturdy board books, beautifully illustrated with fun, rhythmic text. The hippo book is our absolute favorite. Highly recommended!!

Book Description

Can the government seize your house in order to build a shopping mall? Can it determine what you can do to your own body? Why are you allowed to copy songs on a CD, but not music files from the Internet? The answers to those questions come from the Supreme Court—and its rulings have shaped American life and justice. Here are 34 of the most significant issues it has grappled with—from equal rights to privacy rights, from the limits of speech to the boundaries between church and state. Many of these cases read like thrillers…right down to their cliff-hanging endings. Among the most intriguing: the Dred Scott decision, Miranda v. Arizona, Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and Bush v. Gore.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is by no means a definitive legal dissertation on the landmark cases of the Supreme Court. Nor it is especially informative about the law.

What this book does is give a general audience something to think about. Thirty-four somethings to be exact.

The author goes over the cases with broad brushstrokes. The prose is easy to understand and consciously avoids the legalese that would turn off most readers. Instead, the purpose is to get the reader thinking about the ramifications of each case and how it affects our lives (for better or for worse) today.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, easily accessible, but..........2007-06-05

I bought this book and in general I really like it. Very light on jargon and written in relatively simple prose, it was very easy to understand. The selection of cases seemed very thoughtful and historical context of the cases was very interesting. But I just can't give it five stars.

The simple writing makes the book easy-to-read but I felt like I was reading something written for a high-school-level audience and while the level of detail was adequate, it is just barely so--I finished the entire book on a two-hour plane flight and had nothing to read by the time I got to the hotel.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I ordered.......2007-05-12

This was just what I ordered. Shipping was a bit slow (DHL couldn't find us, not your fault) Worth the wait! Will order again...

4 out of 5 stars A fantastic overview of landmark cases.......2007-03-21

Written for the lay reader, _The Supremes' Greatest Hits_ clearly outlines the issues, decisions and relevance of Supreme Court decisions that have an immeadiate impact on daily life. The cases you'd expect to find are here (Marbury v. Madison, Roe v. Wade, Miranda v. Arizona, Brown v. Board) but there are also several cases that I'd never heard of but are no less important (Griswold v. Connecticut, Texas v. Johnson). The facts of each case are broadly discussed, how they relate to the Constitutiuon is outlined, and a brief (1 - 2 page) explaination of why the Court made its decision is explained. A great introduction to landmark cases.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and easy to read.......2007-02-24

Easy to read. No lawyer-ease to try to decifer. Good point of view that looks at how these cases have broader impact then just the case itself. If it doesn't wake you up to be more involved in your family, community, country...maybe you took too many sleeping pills.

Book Description

In an unprecedented look at Babe Ruth’s amazing batting power, sure to inspire debate among baseball fans of every stripe, one of the country's most respected and trusted baseball historians reveals the amazing conclusions of more than twenty years of research. Jenkinson takes readers through Ruth's 1921 season, in which his pattern of battled balls would have accounted for more than 100 home runs in today's ballparks and under today's rules. Yet, 1921 is just tip of the iceberg, for Jenkinson's research reveals that during an era of mammoth field dimensions Ruth hit more 450-plus-feet shots than anybody in history, and the conclusions one can draw are mind boggling.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An impressive home run of a book.......2007-09-08

If you've read "The Big Bam" by Leigh Montville and/or "Babe" by Robert Creamer, you owe it to yourself to read Bill Jenkinson's book. Although you may think it's not possible, Ruth was a better slugger than you ever imagined. He was truly one of a kind.

Jenkinson's book is interesting, fascinating and meticulously well researched. He spent more than 25 years researching each of Ruth's home runs, during spring training, the regular season, post season and on barnstorming tours.

Part of Jenkinson's book details Ruth's "hidden career" of exhibition games. Jenkinson calculates that Ruth participated in 800 exhibition games in six countries, 42 states and more than 200 cities. He blasted more than 300 homers in those games. In 1921, Ruth played an unbelievable total of 207 games. A consummate showman, Ruth kept an incredible schedule, not to mention his off-the-field activities.

Jenkinson focuses on Ruth's power and superlatives. The Bambino didn't hit many routine home runs. Most fans really don't comprehend how spacious the ballparks were in Ruth's days. Jenkinson calculates that Ruth walloped 22 fly outs that traveled more than 450 feet. No one has ever hit as many balls as far as Ruth. What he could do in today's ballparks is unfathomable.

Jenkinson spends 70 pages near the end of the book discussing comparative difficulty of Ruth's home run feats compared to today's game, drawing conclusions and making projections. Stadium photographs showing where some of Ruth's monumental homers landed are particularly interesting and impressive.

5 out of 5 stars research and more research.......2007-07-23

Any historian or student of history must engage in countless hours of research in order to convincingly prove his thesis. Mr. Jenkinson succeeds with flying colors. The most fascinating section of this book is the one dealing with comparative difficulty. Jenkinson leaves no doubt that Ruth played under much more adverse conditions than modern day sluggers. I telephoned Mr. Jenkinson about a couple of points of comparison not mentioned in his book that had me wondering. One was the fact that Ruth played against only 7 teams and faced pitchers much more frequently (4-man rotations) than today's players. Could this be considered an advantage for Ruth. Jenkinson replied that after a while it really doesn't matter how often a hitter faces a pitcher. Another point I made was the fact that during day games, which Ruth played exclusively, shadows can hinder the batter's view. Again Jenkinson said that while this may have been a disadvantage for Ruth, the impact would have been negligent.
I must say that his willingness to discuss these issues (and others) with a reader of his fine book only makes his work more appreciated. I am looking forward to his next book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Look at the Sultan of Swat.......2007-06-08

Thnak for this thoughtful, insightful and persuasive presentation regarding the the career of Babe Ruth. While I consider myself a baseball fan, prior to reading this book, I would consider myself largely ignorant of Ruth's amazing career. After reading this book, I am blown away by Ruth's accomplishments as well as his place in comparison with the modern players. I highly recommend this book and look forward to your next book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book to date on MY GRANDFATHER.......2007-05-11

Bill Jenkinson's book, "The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs"! It is the Babe Ruth book that I have been waiting for years to be written!! Bill has 28 years of researching my grandfather under his belt for writing this book. He can back everything up with published facts and asks anyone to challenge him! It answers alot of questions that I am asked about my grandfather. For example, his TRUE hitting ability, if he had the luxury of today's traveling from game to game, the new equipment, how much would he earn today, difference in how he was treated by the press, sports medicine of the time...etc. He backs it all up with fact too! It reads beautifully, and takes this man, this incrediable talent and blows your mind with what you don't know about the Sultan of Swat! It is really not an expensive book either! I HIGHLY reccommend this book for everyone! This is the REAL Babe in action!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Mr. Jenkinson!.......2007-05-04

This book is unlike any other on Babe Ruth, and I have read quite a few most recently Montville's "Big Bam" and Reisler's treatise on the 1920 season. Jenkinson has spent nearly 30 years recreating all of Ruth's long drives, those counted as homers and those that may have just been flyouts. I had no idea that records this detailed could be obtained from Ruth's era, but Jenkinson has read every sportswriting account imaginable for each official game and for hundreds of exhibition (preseason, during season, and postseason) games that Ruth participated in.
I had always labored under the assumption, even after reading all the bios, that many of Ruth's homeruns were simply the product of the short right field at Yankee Stadium. In fact, the Babe hit very few down the right field line; most of his drives were between right-center and left-center field. Right-center was quite a shot in Ruth's day since the fence angled out sharply. The Babe also had tremendous power to the opposite field.
Jenkinson's "spray" diagrams show all the homeruns hit by Ruth and their approximate distances. Aerial photos of the stadiums around Ruth's time are also shown and arrows shown where Babe's longest drives landed.
A second assumption of mine is that Babe did not take care of himself over the years. In fact, the man wanted to exercise more but the Yankee ball club would not let him in order "to save his legs" for the long season. Ruth had taken it upon himself before spring training started, for several seasons, to hire one of the best exercise gurus in New York. The fact that Ruth could keep coming back strong after all his early season illnesses and nagging injuries shows the fortitude of the man. Baseball was his life and he never wanted to let any one down that had come to see him play. He had a remarkable compassion for people that is shown in several places.
The third assumption was that Babe was probably just an average fielder. I had always wondered about what type of fielder he was, and was always surprised that no biography that I read ever mentioned this. In fact he was an elite fielder, one of the best in the game according to Tris Speaker, the premier outfielder of the day. He was also a terrific baserunner until his last five years.
Babe Ruth was one of a kind and he would be a superstar in any era, whether as the great pitcher he was or as an everyday player. Jenkinson does an interesting analysis of how difficult it was for Ruth as opposed to the difficulties faced by today's players. He also has analyzed conservatively how many homeruns the Babe would hit based on today's shrunken stadiums. It will show the sluggers of the past 30 years in a new light. I hope to meet the author someday at the Babe Ruth museum. No one compares to the Bambino.

A Greatest Hits package to die for, in which the inimitable, Pulitzer-packing humorist applies himself to taxes, toilets, airbags, baseball, beer commercials, and numerous other American artifacts. A typical bit, from a piece on legalized gambling: "Off-Track Betting parlors are the kinds of places where you never see signs that say, 'Thank You for Not Smoking.' The best you could hope for is, 'Thank You for Not Spitting Pieces of Your Cigar on My Neck.'" Happy? There's plenty more where that came from.

Book Description

WHEN DAVE BARRY IS ON THE LOOSE, NO ONE IS SAFE!

What Dave Barry did for the men's movement in his Complete Guide to Guys and for foreign relations when he did Japan he now does for . . . everything in America. The rapacious observer of Tupperware ladies and leisure concept salesmen sounds off on:

Football--Football is more than just a game. It is a potential opportunity to see a live person lying on the ground with a bone sticking out of his leg, while the fans, to show their appreciation, perform "the wave."

Sailing--There's nothing quite like getting out on the open sea, where you can forget about the hassles and worries of life on land, and concentrate on the hassles and worries of life on the sea, such as death by squid.

Gambling--Off-Track Betting parlors are the kinds of places where you never see signs that say, "Thank You for Not Smoking." The best you can hope for is, "Thank You for Not Spitting Pieces of Your Cigar on My Neck."

"The good news: he's funny as ever. The bad news: the book is only 304 pages."

5 out of 5 stars Funny Dave.......2007-07-17

As an Irish person, living in a small town in rainy Ireland, it is unusual to find a book by Dave Barry..(hooray for Amazon). I don't know anyone who has any idea who he is, and why should they.. he is or was(?) a journalist for the Miami Herald, and is a well known funny man in the States, and no singular Irishman or woman has any reason to know of him.. and isn't it a shame. I love funny books. I have some great ones...but Dave is one of the funniest guys I've never met. This book is full of anecdotal ravings and mad perceptions but, you know he is really so funny, you don't care if he talks of giant carnivorous fleas somewhere in the mid-west, or helping his son with a science project waiting for the ants to bite. (ME thinks him an entomologist at heart).. but he has such a funny way of putting things, that no matter what the subject matter, you will read it and enjoy it. Let's face it, in this violent, crime filled world, isn't it still nice that you can have a smile put on your face!

4 out of 5 stars not 100% funny but he doesn't need to be .......2007-03-07

A typical Barry column in this collection is like some Mel Brooks movies I've seen- he throws so much humor (or at least intended humor) at you that even if only 10% of it is funny, you are still laughing at least once or twice per essay. The ideal way to spend time when you are trapped at, say, a haircut appointment or a Greyhound bus (which is where I was when I read this fun little book!)

4 out of 5 stars Fun to read a bit at a time.......2007-01-27

I enjoyed this book partly because it is about 80 separate columns in one book. It's easy to skim the titles and choose one that sounds right for your mood. I read it before going to sleep over the course of a couple of months, one or two chapters most evenings. I didn't really read them in any set order and occasionally had to guess if I'd already read the chapter before looking at the first paragraph or two. Some of the stories are "laugh out loud" funny while others are just okay.

It's certainly reasonably priced even if some of the material is a bit dated.

I would recommend this book to any Dave Barry fan.

4 out of 5 stars Audio Version a real treat.......2006-10-03

My cassette tape version was read by John Ritter who was one of the few people who could actually read Dave Barry correctly - he put the emphasis in the right places and pauses to make the jokes work perfectly.

On to the material -

It was a bit up and down, but mostly up (even the downs weren't down very far). His time-share condo essay is a gem that should be printed off and handed out to people before they go into a time-share condo presentation. His "Diplodocus" essay was funny and touching all at the same time. One of his best ever. The "Can New York Save Itself?" essay was a prime example of Dave taking a joke and running it into the ground. It was mildly amusing but it kept going and going and going and going and ... you get the point.

So, this one gets a B+.

5 out of 5 stars 6 Stars.......2006-09-13

I don't read much, I just don't really like to. But reading this book is not like reading at all. This is by far the funniest book I have ever read. Dave Barry is the funniest man alive. I don't laugh much or loud, but as I was reading this book to myself I would find myself laughing out loud very very often.

We used one of the songs as a joke in our wedding (Indianna Jones theme song... I'm an Archaeologist) and people LOVED it! Thanks for helping to make our special day even better!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Overall a decent product by Alfred's.......2007-08-15

I had just started learning piano at a late age, with no piano nor musical background whatsoever and the Alfred books make it learning almost effortless. This book is harder than the level 1 adult course book I'm at but I enjoy learning piece #1, Love Me Tender.

5 out of 5 stars Great method book.......2007-08-03

Great book. Makes all the stuff students are learning in the method book come to life!

2 out of 5 stars could have better arrangement.......2007-01-04

This book contains many beautiful songs, but the arrangement is not that well done. "What a wonderful world" sounded awful here. Some of the better ones are also just OK. I understand this is a beginner book hence the songs are made easy; but I didn't enjoy much learning to play the tunes. My other textbooks are much better.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A classic album.......2007-08-29

There are not a lot of albums I would buy, but this is one that I did. As far as I'm concerned this album rates among the all-time classic (pop?)rock albums. It's rates to be there along with other classic albums, such as the Beatles White album, or Neil Diamond's Hot August Night. What else can I say?

    5 out of 5 stars Good Transcriptions.......2003-07-29

Very good note for note transcriptions of the songs.

To the person who couldn't get boxer to match : The book says no capo required. This is misleading. The recording is tuned one step lower than standard tuning. So you need a capo at the -2 fret :) If you want to match the recording, you will have to retune. The publisher assumed most people wouldnt want to do that, so they just said no capo required.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners........2001-08-02

This is an excellent book for beginners, I just got it and I'm already enjoying it. If you play the Acoustic guitar and you're not an expert that you can play songs and write notes only by listening to them - this book is for you. Bridge Over Troubled Water and Mrs. Robinson are only 2 of the great hits you'll find in this book. Here is the list of songs: America, Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Cecilia, El Condor Pass, For Emily, Whenever I Might Find Her, Homeward Bound, I Am A Rock, Kathy's Song, Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair/Canticle, The Boxer
The 59th Street Bridge Street Song (Feelin' Groovy), The Sounds Of Silence. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners but not perfect.......2000-02-13

Songs within are Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs. Robinson, the Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Scarborough Fair - Canticle, I Am a Rock, Kathy's Song, Cecillia, America, Bookends, Homeward Bound, El Condor Pasa, For Emily Whenever I May Find Her.

There are words with each song. Songs match the CD with the same title and cover picture. Except I can't get the Boxer to match the one on the CD.

Doesn't have the usual note guide with it. I'm a beginner so this book is a stretch.
