Excellent for beginners.......2007-06-27
Really makes you work, but you'll learn very quickly with this book. It's well laid out and not so difficult that you'll get frustrated and give up.

Larry Baione is an excellent instructor in the DVD. He clarified some doubts I had ,but the best of all is that he gives many tips that are not included in the book.I sincerely recommend this book with the DVD..And Mr Baione, please release the DVD companion for the books 2 and 3 - I think this is the best Guitar Instruction DVD !! I really thank Berklee and Mr Baione for this excellent idea.

Excellent teaching book.......2007-03-26
This book highly recommended by my son's guitar teacher, who is getting his Master's degree in classical guitar performance. It doesn't use those beginning songs that are boring to kids. It really keeps their interest and is very thorough. My son (11 yrs) is very happy with it and doesn't ask for my help (that's good ~ cuz I don't play the guitar :-)
Awesome.......2007-02-22
This book is awesome. I recently finished but I'm in the process of review currently. The book takes you from the very basics and has you reading in 4 positions by the end of the book. It also gives you 5 or 6 major scale fingerings as well as tons of chord forms, chord reading etudes, picking etudes, etc. The book is a complete system for becoming complete player and every aspect of beginner playing is covered here. Everything is planned out in a genius way thanks to William Leavitt, one of the greatest guitar teachers in history. This book is heavy and I honestly wouldn't reccomend it to the straight beginner because it's too brainy and hard. If you've been playing for awhile and you're ready to get serious and learn to read then this is the perfect book. In my opinion this is the greatest book you'll find out there and I can't recommend it enough. I'll warn you though, it's no cake walk and takes time and dedication (which will be worthwhile!).
excellent (like anyone else NEEDS to say it...).......2006-07-11
Six or more stars, really.
I finally bought this book after "thinking about it" forever. (I have a problem with the thinking thing.) Well, just as has been said before... drop everything else and go through these books. You'll be WAY ahead if you do. I studied classical guitar for a year in college (though I'm primarily a jazz-rock-etc. player), and this SHOULD have been the book they used back then. The exercises are melodic enough that anyone with an ear should be able to follow them with little difficulty, and still you'll learn everything you need to learn.
The progression of exercises is sensible, and everything holds together as a meaningful whole, an attribute lacking in most guitar instruction books. (Though you may want to add Arnie Berle's "New Guitar Techniques for Sight Reading" as well. Not that there's a gap in Leavitt's books, just that Berle's approach may broaden your approach a bit. Berle's other books are good as well, in my opinion.)
So don't think (as I did) that this is a method for "that kind of player over there, but not me," as I did. Regardless of your intended style, what you will get here will put you years ahead if you just do it. After that, you'll be ready to tackle anything - it'll still be work, it always will be, but you won't spin your wheels as hundreds of thousands of players do.
Guitar players owe something good to Leavitt for this book, really. It's obviously the product of a sensible, disciplined, knowledgable and concerned mind.

Good book, if you have an instructor.......2007-09-17
It's a good book if you have an instructor. I'm taking lessons, and I've had some music classes before, so this book works for me. This book doesn't have a whole lot of text explaining things. I would not recommend this book to the total beginner.
A Great Learning Tool.......2007-08-26
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It is helping me regain some of the proficiency that I had as a teenaged guitar player.
This is not a book of familiar songs to entertain you. It is a book with exercises, etudes, and interesting musical passages that will help you gain guitar-playing skills. It also intoduces the necessary chords and progressions.
If you are just looking for the easy way out and just want to learn a couple of riffs and chords in your favorite genre, don't buy this book. If you really want to gain guitar skills, buy the book and be prepared to do the work.
Picking up guitar after 15 year absence..........2007-07-05
I was a self-taught guitar player in my teens and early twenties, but gradually gave it up when I didn't have a guitar to practice on (and was too poor to buy one). This book is a solid investment for any aspiring guitar player who has the committment to really, truly learn to play the guitar. It's solid theory and clever exercises will get you familiar with each key but it isn't for the impatient. This course doesn't coddle, you have to do your homework... and it might help to have a mentor explain some things for clarity. But if you have patience and are in it for the long haul, and are willing to pay your dues, this course is for you.
~a very happy customer.
No Holds Barred. The Best Guitar method ever!.......2007-03-28
This is the best guitar method period. If you really want to learn how to play the entire guitar than this is the method book to get! This book was designed to be used at the Berklee Music School in Boston. This is the same method used by several famous guitar players who attended Berklee...Steve Vai, John Patrucci, etc. YOu get the picture. Just buy it and find the best guitar teacher around who can walk you through book one. After that you will be on your own. Good Luck.
An absolute MUST for any serious musician on guitar.......2007-03-22
First, let me say that this method IS NOT all about sight reading. This is an approach that does not cater to illiteracy(unlike most methods that are written in TAB so illiterate guitarists can buy it and stay in their comfort zone), so I can understand how those who don't read may feel like it is a sight reading program.
That being said I'll tell you what it is: Bill Leavitt has devised a logical, progressive way of presenting all of the techniques a guitarist needs to get well on their way to reaching their potential. If you don't read standard notation(little black dots) then you will fluently by the time you get through this program. However, this method just as thoroughly addresses every other technique you can think of. It is truly a complete method.
My greatest regret about my progress as a musician is that I wasted so much time and energy getting sucked into the notion that if Jimi Hendrix was illiterate, then that's the way I want to be. Make the decision now to broaden your horizons and develop a sense of refinement. Be a musician, not just another twit with a guitar.

This is an excellent program for anyone who wants to learn how to play the gutair better. It's very easy to read and follow. A must have!
I like the book........2005-10-03
I like the book. The DVD and audio CD are difinitely a good addition to the original. I'm glad I spent the extra money and got the expanded edition.
Product Description
Grade 2 explores more complex rhythms in carefully graded solo and duet settings with parallel lessons in music theory- just enough to keep students up to speed in terms of what they are expected to play. The book begins with a review of playing in the key of C major but soon goes to F major/D minor followed by D major/B minor. Written in standard notation only. A companion double CD set is available for this book.

Very nice!.......2006-08-23
Learning to play again, read music this time. Very logical, well thought out, new skills seem to appear on their own after sustained practice. The man must have been a fabulous teacher.
Mel Bays Modern Guitar Method: Grade 2.......2006-03-20
I am a professional musician, and I teach guitar part time. I believe that Grade 2, 3, and so forth are excellent introductory books that I recommend for anyone who desires to play a guitar while reading sheet music. (I would not recommend the additional grades for students who only intend to play guitar by ear.)
Mel Bay'sGuitar Method, Level 2 Is Excellent.......2003-12-02
As a guitar instructor of 10 years, I can say that the entire Mel Bay series of guitar technique books are very good-the best around. This second book in the series, Level 2 continues the education began in Level 1.
This second book, more so than the first, does require the assistance of an instructor or experienced player. Although it still introduces new techniques with decent visual graphics and adequate written instruction, it does not allow for the beginner to reference it in the way Mel Bay 1 does. Instead, this second book advances a little more quickly, with more advanced playing technique that develops the individual player's skill with such devices as scales, plectrum technique, more advanced bar chords, and beginning movement in positions up the neck.
As with level one, the book continues to introduce players to new chords, and provides practical applications of these chords to songs to be attempted by the guitar student. The intent of this technique is to master the use of the chords in playing styles that are more classically evolved rather than only focusing on rythem playing. The result is a more rounded education with a playing style that, upon completion of this book, should begin to become highly developed.
For anyone who has been looking for a great study of the guitar, look no further than the MelBay Guitar Method series. These books are first rate and will provide a great education for anyone from the casual player to the most dedicated student musician.
Dont buy it.......2002-03-20
Hey. I started guitar a year ago and have used this book. It is not good at all. I know none of the songs I would like to no and I am not having any fun at all from using this stupid book. Im quitting this book and moving on to a better book because I havent learned a thing. If I keep going with this I will probabl quit.
Teach yourself the guitar.......2000-06-01
I used Mel Bay's guitar method series to teach myself the guitar and they helped greatly. By teaching the proper fingering and technique for picking and strumming, it was easier to pick up the instrument.

Product Description
The world's premier method for learning modern plectrum style guitar, time-tested and proven successful in building the theoretic and technical foundation needed to play in any style. All seven grades of this method are written in standard notation only to encourage better sight reading. In Grade 1, the student guitarist will learn to play solos, duets, scales, and chords in the keys of C, A minor, G and E minor. Even in Grade 1, the student is already exposed to the chord/melody concept of guitar performance. A supplementary study book entitled Grade 1 Studies, two different play-along CD recordings (pop and traditional), and a VHS or DVD video are available. The companion recordings feature Tommy Flint and William Bay playing in split-track format, with the solo parts performed on the right channel, and the accompaniment or second duet parts played on the left. The student can play along with the full recording, or tune out either channel and play the missing part.
Customer Reviews:
For what it's focused on - it's pretty good.......2007-03-25
I disagree with some reviewers who feel this is just old fashioned - well it is old fashioned as it was first written in 1946 - but for what it does, teach you to play music on guitar, it's OK. There's very few other books that do that well. But these Mel Bay books are so cheap, they are worth it just for the music reading practice. It's not a book for starting to play guitar, it's a book to help you read music on guitar. I'll give it 5 as it's such good value for money and forcing you to learn music - something you need to do sometime before you get real good - or risk looking a moron in front of other musicians who've taken the time out to learn standard notation.
Why read? Well it's a bit like being able to speak a language but not be able to read and write it. TAB is specific for guitarists and bass players - if you'll ever need to communicate your musical ideas to any other players you'll need standard notation. And if you want to be a pro, we shouldn't even be having this discussion - it isn't an option.
There's also Mel Bay's newer, William Bay written series of 5 books based on these called Mastering the Guitar. These have a newer feel. But they are very similar.
Solid Instruction for the Hungry Student.......2007-01-25
I am a "self-taught" guitarist of over 30 years. Last year I decided to get serious about guitar and put some order around all the stuff I've picked up over the years. I can't count the number of instructional "stuff" I've purchased over the years. I wish I would have found this text earlier. I would have saved myself lots of money and frustration! If you want to know how music theory relates to your fretboard and *really* be able to play any kind of music, this is the book for you. If you want a quick answer or a formula for playing rifts to impress your friends, you probably won't like it. This book is for someone who sincerely wants to work toward mastering the instrument. The course is not a destination, but rather the beginning of a journey that will bring you hours of enjoyment as you discover how music theory is related to the fretboard. For best results, find a good instructor with a sense of humor to help you; it's a good investment.
Outdated, painfully boring, deficient in modern guitar techniques.......2006-07-27
This book has sold millions of copies since it was first printed in 1948 (read the copyright inside the book). That's the problem. It was a "modern method" back in 1948 but it's terribly out-of-date today. Music in general has changed dramaticlly since 1948. There was no such thing as rock n' roll in 1948, no Bob Dylan, no Elvis Presely, not even any Beatles. Educational material relied on classical music written on piano. That's how this book appears to have been written. Like Mel Bay adapted one of its piano methods to use for guitar.
The book's approach to technique relies exculsively on flatpicking (where one holds a pick). Which is what the cowboys on the range did as they sat around campfire back in 1948. The songs are mostly country and western fiddle tunes like Home On The Range (page 39) and Carry Me Back to Old Virginny (page 40). There is no contemporary pop/rock like Aaron Stang's 21st Century Guitar Method book 1 or Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books, which contain many pop/rock pieces for students to have fun with and get excited about. That's just it. This book is one of the most boring method books in print. Each and every time I use this book (I teach guitar) my students revolt like prison inmates.
Although there is one Sor classical guitar piece, it is to be played with a flatpick, not played with the fingers like a classical guitar piece is supposed to be played. There are no fingerstyle pieces in this book or book 2 in the series (not sure about the rest in the series as I've avoided using them). I highly recommend the Mel Bay "Class Guitar Method" book 1 by William Bay instead of this one. The Class Guitar Method has a nice variety.
This book does have it's strengths which is why it has sold so many copies. It shows primary chords in the key you're studying before you begin to play the practice exercise. And it shows the associated major or minor scale the piece is based on. It requires you to really work on your sight reading as there is no TAB (tablature). But forcing people to sight read in these modern times (2006, not 1948) without TAB leads to student grumbling, followed by kiddie tantrums (which is embarrassing when they're adults), then outright hostility toward their mean guitar teacher.
The final problem I have with this book is it doesn't say anywhere what the recommended age requirement is for those thinking about purchasing it. I would say a person should be at least 16 or 17. It's really best for adult-aged, more mature, students that don't want TAB (I've yet to come accross one), doesn't care about learning contemporary songs and techniques, and prefers a method book that tests their sight reading skills example after example, lesson after lesson, and week after week, month after month. ad nauseam. If that's you, this book is for you.
If you're are an adult, or young adult in middle or high school, I highly recommend Jerry Snyder's "Guitar School" book 1 over this one as Guitar School is up-to-date and very contemporary with every technique and guitar style today's guitarist uses written out in TAB and demonstrated on the CD. But if you're sticking with Mel Bay, get Mel Bay's Class Guitar Method, which I really like, over this one.
Not exactly modern.......2006-05-13
I got this book after having previously purchased Ralph Denyer's Guitar Handbook. This book is most certainly not about the modern guitar you might be thinking about if you're learning to play The Beatles, Metallica, U2, Aerosmith, or any rock or hard rock bands from the last fifty plus years.
This book's version of "modern" guitar seems to be talking about the semi-classical/folk tunes that a young guitar player might be interested if they were growing up around 1920 or 1930.
This isn't to say that the book has nothing positive to offer. It is very well laid out and does introduce concepts about scales and chords in a way that is not too quick for the beginner. It is a good book, but it may be a little old, and therefore, not what you're looking for.
Mel Bays Modern Guitar Method Grade 1.......2006-03-20
I am a professional musician, and I teach guitar part time. I believe that this is the best introductory book that I have seen for anyone who wants to learn to play a guitar. It also teaches elementary music theory too, which is necessary where you intend to play guitar reading music, or playing by ear. It's excellent, and I give it a top rating.
Book Description
Now available in a book/CD pack! The William Leavitt guitar method, used as the basic text for the Berklee College of Music guitar program, has stood the test of time and earned a vast and loyal following of guitar students and instructors. After mastering the basics from Volume 1, this intermediate-level book continues and builds upon the study of melody, scales, arpeggios and chords, covering the entire fingerboard. This volume also addresses: intervals, chord voicings, improvisation, rhythm-guitar techniques, play-along duets and more.
Customer Reviews:
Still Worthwhile With Much To Offer.......2006-04-12
I first came across volume 2 of Leavitt's long running series as a teenager in the 70's. I was playing out of pentatonic scale patterns like many of my rock-playing peers yet I was listening to jazz and frustrated by my inability to graft that
technique onto playing standards and modal pieces. The guitarists and horn players I was hearing were playing phrases and notes that I couldn't find in my limited grasp of the fingerboard.
The Leavitt book introduced me to a variety of scale fingerings covering the entire fingerboard. They seemed so foreign at the time, but have since become as natural as my pentatonic "boxes". The forms themselves rather than the pattern exercises are
the important things to focus on. Create your own patterns.
The books are about more than scales and arpeggios however. In fact, to be honest I would now regard the scale and arpeggio material as secondary. While the books have been around since (I believe) the 60's and "modern" might be stretching
things a bit, the chord voicings and studies however are still, in my opinion, valid, interesting and worth serious study. Most books on chord melody deal with monolithic block chord harmonization. On the other hand, Leavitt's chordal etudes
contain a wonderful variety of textures and techniques that can form the basis of a more "improvisatory" chordal technique, where arrangements sound spontaneous rather than memorized and static.
A lot has changed in terms of material available to guitarists since these books ruled the roost (for all I know, at Berklee they still do). It took me a lot of years and a lot of revisiting these (and other) books to appreciate what Leavitt's method has to offer.
Great continuation of the first book........2006-02-05
I really have have learned some things I didn't know in this book, it was a great read.
A MUST BUY!!.......2005-12-26
As famous Jazz guitarist, Mike Stern, said "...[Modern Method for Guitar Book is] the best method ever written for guitar."
When someone that well-known, that well-respected comments on a book by the Berklee Press, you have just got to believe it.
The "Modern Method for Guitar Book" now includes a DVD-ROM, so players can understand it better. Even without the DVD-ROM, this book is still very clear with its explanations on various things such as scales, melodic studies, chord and arpeggio studies, how to read music, special exercises for developing technique in both hands, and chord voicing.
I have been using this book for a year, and constantly reviewing the pages I have already finished. I have noticed that I am a lot better at reading music than I used to be, and even my hearing is a lot better as I have focused on chord voicing. I would recommend a private instructor to help you throughout this book
If you don't know where to start, START WITH THIS ONE! I guarantee this book is worth going through!
And if you're really driven, go for Volume 2 and Volume 3! Hey, if you're not driven, just do it. It will be WORTHWHILE.
A Modern Method For Guitar Volume 2.......2005-10-22
This book is for anyone serious about learning the guitar well. It was my standard method in college and up to this point, I have not found a better overall method for learning the guitar. The exercises and etudes contained in the method will work many aspects of one's playing at the same time.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent followup.......2007-01-08
This is an excellent follow up to the first book in the Mel Bay series. It is well worth to buy the expanded edition rather than the standard edition of the book. Not only do you get more content, including several excellent practice and warm-up exercises, the spiral binding holds up to lots of wear. The only thing that would make it better would be if it came with the CD.
If you are learning on your own (as I am), especially if you are an adult (read older, 50+) learner, I strongly recommend using the Mel Bay expanded series. It doesn't talk down to you and moves along fast enough to keep you interested. Actually, I'd suggest using both this and "Alfred's Basic Guitar Method (Complete, Books 1 - 3)" and alternate between the two. The only problem with the Alfred's book is the perfect binding doesn't hold up well with extensive use.
Book Description
The most complete method for the modern blues guitarist. You will learn basic blues techniques, soloing over the I, IV and V chords, and the differences between authentic blues soloing, blues-rock, funk and jazz-oriented solos. Plus you'll learn classic blues phrases, intros, endings and turnarounds. With over 130 music examples, all recorded on the included CD, and over 20 complete blues tunes for demonstration and play-along practice this book is a complete course on blues guitar.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! What a great book. Meticoulous organization........2007-02-20
Meticoulous is the key word here. Don Latarski's books are better written than most in that he uses a visual approach (for visual learners) in his layout of the material. Licks are accompanied by a complete fretboard diagram of the chord and arpeggio the lick is derived from - complete with chord tone scale degrees indicated within, not just a bunch of black circles like poorly compiled books show for their chord and scale diagrams.
Aurally, for your listening enlightenment, each and every lick and technique is recorded on the CD and played with the appropriate blues inflection to demonstrate the blues "feeling." A professional educator as well as an accomplished blues guitarist (he's recorded several CDs - see his website), Don knows when to explain the theory behind the concept. For instance, he explaines the blues form, swing triplets, altered blues scales, alterations, extensions, are all explained and explained in a progressive manner moving from the familiar blues box to adding blues notes then 4ths, 6ths, 9ths, and so on. Every example is not without easy to understand clarification so the beginner won't be slapped with confusing techno jargon and slang.
On top of all this, you get a lot of material - and I mean A LOT of material for the book's $25 price tag - plus it's spiral bound - it lays flat on your music stand without having to jump up and down on the binding like I usually have to do to get the bugger to lay flat. This is definately a book you're going to keep in your guitar instruction book library for continued study as you progress or start to fall into the dreaded blues-box-rut and need to find your way out. Plus you'll have fun listening to the CD tracks as you internalize the sound of the blues.
a complete course.......2005-05-13
This book covers a complete course in the blues. Organized into units the book is a little big extensive for a beginning guitarist, but is an excellent tool for growing as a musician. This book covers all the basics and with a little bit of creativity you can extend its teaching, for example from turn around A or E to a turn around in any key, etc. The chord tones are shown in the Key of E for the I, IV and V chord but with a bit of work you can discover then in all the other keys and positions, the important thing is the exposure to the ideas. This book covers a plethora of ideas and was a great purchase.

Book Description
Modern Guitar Method Grade 2 features a tremendous amount of playing material for the guitar student. Because of this, a special two-CD package is offered with hours of playing material. The split-track format featuring the guitars of Tommy Flint and William Bay contains the solo parts on the right channel and the accompaniment parts on the left. The guitar student may play with melody, accompaniment, or both!
Book Description
All seven volumes of Mel Bay's original, internationally acclaimed Modern Guitar Method series are included in this single, deluxe master compilation. No other comparable method exists for the guitar! As Mr. Bay perceived the need for a guitar method that would effectively teach beginning guitarists to read music, this method is intentionally written in standard notation only, providing just enough music theory to understand what the student is required to play at any given point. Although fingerstyle technique can be applied to the pieces and studies, this book is specifically tailored for the plectrum-style player. Contains hundreds of beginner through advanced solos and duets in all fretboard positions and all keys, plus all four-note rhythm chord formations on high, middle and low sets of adjacent strings. This edition also includes additional outstanding plectrum guitar solo arrangements not found in the original seven volumes. All in all, this outstanding method leads the student to total mastery of the fretboard.
