Peter D'Amato has been raising carnivorous plants for three decades, and his nursery, California Carnivores, houses the world's largest collection of flesh-eating flora. There's not much D'Amato doesn't know about growing these oddballs of the plant world, and he imparts his expertise gracefully and with humor in The Savage Garden, which is aimed at curious gardeners who want to grow carnivorous plants both indoors and out. From the ever-fascinating Venus flytrap to the aquatic bladderwort and the rather extravagantly sexual-looking pitcher plant, these exotic plants have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but D'Amato proves otherwise. The necessary water and soil chemistry, proper lighting, and propagation tips are discussed thoroughly along with descriptions and growing tips for many species in each of 11 plant families.
If plants can have personalities, these do--or at least appear to in the hundreds of witty photographs and colored illustrations that show them both at their hungriest and at their most innocuous. This is a stunningly comprehensive guide that will inspire and fascinate even the most squeamish gardener. -- Barrie Trinkle

the savage garden.......2007-10-01
Zeer goed boek,
Awesome read!.......2007-09-26
I have read many reviews about this book, and now that I have gotten this book, I have to agree that it is packed full of information! I was not able to keep carnivorous plants alive before I read this book, and now they are bright and beautiful! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a carnivorous plant collection!
An excellent book for anyone ranging from novice to experienced CP growers.......2007-07-24
The book is well written and well organized. It presents a wealth of information, and is an indispensable part of anyone's library interested in carnivorous plants.
Perfect!!!.......2007-04-11
If you are going to buy one book to help you out with growing your carnivorus plants then this is it. It is the number one best reference book to cultivating, caring, learning and just about anything else you want to know about carnivorous plants. This book has been my bible and I never make any changes to my Carnivorous plant arrangments without consulting this book first. This is the king of all Carnivorous plant books. It has even made me want to take a trip from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Sebastopol, California where this authors Carnivorous plant nursery is located. Not to mention that Peter D'Amato's nursery is supposed to be the largest Carnivorous Plant nursery in the US. If you are looking for a book then stop right now and choose this one. You'll be glad you did.
Simply an amazing book and a great value! .......2007-01-03
This book is worth its weight in gold, plain and simple. It is an absolutely wonderful collection of history, humor, scientific and horticultural information about virtually all known types of carnivorous plants. While not geared toward the die hard biologist, it is packed with enough detailed information about the plants, presented in clear and elegant fashion, that it will satisfy readers from almost any background.
In this book you will find, without a doubt, some of the best information for growing these wonderful and increasingly rare plants. Whether you're a novice grower or have a modest collection, there is something for you in this book. This book covers it all, from growing medium to green houses, from terrariums to watering techniques, it's all there in clear, concise form and expertly organized.
This book is literally a steal at its current price and I would easily pay twice as much for it. There is a reason that this book has gotten, with one exception at this time, five star ratings from everyone that reviewed it. It's the same reason that anyone and everyone who seriously grows carnivorous plants already owns a copy. Do yourself and your plants a favor and buy this book.

What the Dead Know: A Novel
ASIN: 0399153535
Release Date: 2007-05-10 |
Book Description
From the author of the acclaimed national bestseller Amagansett comes an even more remarkable novel set in the Tuscan hills: the story of two murders, four hundred years apart-and the ties that bind them together.
Adam Banting, a somewhat aimless young scholar at Cambridge University, is called to his professor's office one afternoon and assigned a special summer project: to write a scholarly monograph about a famous garden built in the 1500s. Dedicated to the memory of Signor Docci's dead wife, the garden is a mysterious world of statues, grottoes, meandering rills, and classical inscriptions. But during his three-week sojourn at the villa, Adam comes to suspect that clues to a murder are buried in the strange iconography of the garden: the long-dead Signor Docci most likely killed his wife and filled her memorial garden with pointers as to both the method and the motive of his crime.
As the mystery of the garden unfolds, Adam finds himself drawn into a parallel intrigue. Through his evolving relationship with the lady of the house-the ailing, seventy-something Signora Docci-he finds clues to yet another possible murder, this one much more recent. The signora's eldest son was shot by Nazi officers on the third floor of the villa, and her husband, now dead, insisted that the area be sealed and preserved forever. Like the garden, the third-floor rooms are frozen in time. Delving into his subject, Adam begins to suspect that his summer project might be a setup. Is he really just the nave student, stumbling upon clues, or is Signora Docci using him to discover for herself the true meaning of the villa's murderous past?

The Savage Garden is amazing!!.......2007-09-09
Mark Mills is an amazing author! His book captivates you from the beginning and holds you till the end. The plot is fantastic! I recommend this book to any fan of fiction.
The Dante Code?.......2007-08-29
This book began with great promise - lots of suspense. What could be more tantalizing than a top floor of a large villa being closed off to all (shades of Jane Eyre), and an intricate garden with mystifying statues set below a huge mansion? Special italicized chapters added to the mystery - what did they signify? Alas, my hopes for a really electrifying mystery began to fade, and by the end of the book I hardly cared what it was all about. Not even chase scenes, sizzling sex and maybe-evil figures such as "Fausto" could prop up the suspense. References to Dante's Inferno couldn't keep the action going either. Too bad. But I enjoyed the wry observations of the protagonist - good touches of humor.
The female characters were predictable, stiff, stereotyped whereas the male characters were more relaxed and believable.
I did appreciate the map at the beginning of the book. It helped keep me on track with all that chasing around outdoors.
Intriguing Mystery.......2007-08-28
"The Savage Garden" was book I picked up off the "new" bookshelf at the libaray. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish the book because I couldn't understand the mystery. As I read more all the different parts of the story started coming together. The book was very well written and full of history. The surprise at the end was a nice twist, something I wasn't expecting. I would recommend it to family & friends.
JUST NOT FOR ME..........................2007-07-13
I need to be very fair with this review. I could not finish this book which is very rare for me. I just didn't get the main character. I wasn't drawn in. I only was intrigued by the elder woman in the house. The daughter - again, nothing registered.
I believe this book was well written but that it just wasn't my cup of tea. I love novels that are well written pieces of literature. I love it when a historical theme is played equally with that of a thriller.
I thought this would be all that and more. I must give it 3 stars for I did not like it and even though it did seem well written, as I said, the story didn't grow and make me a part of it, craving to read which is what a good book should do.
Excellent read to the end.......2007-06-24
"The Savage Garden" is a tightly written murder mystery that has a foot in the 1970s and another some 300 years earlier. The author has done some convincing research in Italian post-WWII and renaissance history which gives the story considerable richness and complexity. The characters are well-developed and well-veiled (as it turns out). There is little predictability here, which will please most mystery afficianados. Highly recommended.
Book Description
To modern sensibilities, nineteenth-century zoos often seem to be unnatural places where animals led miserable lives in cramped, wrought-iron cages. Today zoo animals, in at least the better zoos, wander in open spaces that resemble natural habitats and are enclosed, not by bars, but by moats, cliffs, and other landscape features. In Savages and Beasts, Nigel Rothfels traces the origins of the modern zoo to the efforts of the German animal entrepreneur Carl Hagenbeck.
By the late nineteenth century, Hagenbeck had emerged as the world's undisputed leader in the capture and transport of exotic animals. His business included procuring and exhibiting indigenous peoples in highly profitable spectacles throughout Europe and training exotic animals -- humanely, Hagenbeck advertised -- for circuses around the world. When in 1907 the Hagenbeck Animal Park opened in a village near Hamburg, Germany, Hagenbeck brought together all his business interests in a revolutionary zoological park. He moved wild animals out of their cages and into "natural landscapes" alongside "primitive" peoples from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the islands of the Pacific. Hagenbeck had invented a new way of imagining captivity: the animals and people on exhibit appeared to be living in the wilds of their native lands.
By looking at Hagenbeck's multiple enterprises, Savages and Beasts demonstrates how seemingly enlightened ideas about the role of zoos and the nature of animal captivity developed within the essentially tawdry business of placing exotic creatures on public display. Rothfels provides both fascinating reading and much-needed historical perspective on the nature of our relationship with the animal kingdom.

"Nationally bestselling and critically acclaimed author Denise Hamilton returns with a new Eve Diamond novel that courses through L.A.'s vibrant theater community and confirms her reputation for sexy, sophisticated crime writing with an urban edge. L.A. Times reporter Eve Diamond has been looking forward to a romantic date with her new love, Silvio Aguilar, for quite some time. She envisions opening night at the theater, cocktails, and then a sultry evening to catch up on all they've been missing. But when the play's beautiful and notoriously unstable lead actress, Catarina Velosi, fails to appear, Eve learns that Silvio and the missing woman share a complicated past. And his friend, gangbanger-turned-playwright Alfonso Reventon, may know more than he lets on when he dispatches Silvio to Catarina's Echo Park bungalow to check up on his leading lady. A messy scene indicates that Catarina could have been abducted--or worse--and when it becomes clear that Silvio is no stranger to the actress's home, or her bed, Eve must stifle her own feelings of betrayal and fight to clear his name. She knows Silvio is innocent...or does she? Summoning her journalist's skills and steeling herself for further revelations, Eve methodically approaches the players in Catarina's personal tragedy, including Alfonso, the actress's sometime lover and director, and the high-strung and evasive Marisela Reventon, Alfonso's jealous wife. An enigmatic drama instructor, a powerful movie mogul, and a lecherous political yes-man round out the intriguing cast. Is one of them hiding something that might lead Eve to the truth? And who is responsible for attacking her in a darkened street and threatening her life? To complicate matters, Eve's been assigned to mentor young African-American reporter Felice Morgan, who insinuates herself into the case at every turn. Felice's overeager boasting on the job escalates into outright lies, testing Eve's conscience as a reporter and a friend. As Eve begins to suspect Felice of unethical journalism, she navigates a treacherous landscape in both her professional and personal life. From the barrio to the newsroom, nothing--and no one--can be taken at face value in this intoxicating tale of scandal, murder, and revenge. The Washington Times says ""Hamilton writes like the pro she is,"" and with Savage Garden, her star is on the rise. Frequently compared to Raymond Chandler and his classic detective Philip Marlowe, but with a sleek, modern veneer, Denise Hamilton and Eve Diamond have cut a groundbreaking swath through the streets of ethnically and culturally diverse Los Angeles, revealing the glory and the corruption of their beloved hometown. "
Customer Reviews:
Tautly written thriller!.......2006-09-18
Savage Garden has our intrepid investigative reporter, Eve Diamond, in the middle of a scandal involving her lover, Silvio. Eve investigates the murder of an actress who is a friend and former lover of Silvio--partly to alleviate suspicion against him. She braves threats and danger to absolve Silvio, even while she is undermined by her own doubts about his truthfulness. Meanwhile, She also has to train an ambitious rookie who may be stealing her leads. Eve precariously manages to juggle her career, her love-life and the murder investigation.
Eve is a gutsy heroine who struggles to maintain a high-profile reporter job in the cut-throat world of big city journalism. This makes having a private life pretty difficult. The stories are set against the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles and its artsy multi-ethnic communities. My only quibble with this story is that Eve doesn't seem to have much fun--I'd like to see her play in between all the hard work she does!
Eve Diamond is Back! And she's dangerous!.......2006-06-16
Everyone who loved LAST LULLABY, SUGAR SKULL and THE JASMINE TRADE needs to rush out and read SAVAGE GARDEN. Denise Hamilton has lost none of the edge she exhibited in those books. If anything, she's a smarter, more accomplished writer now.
The opening passages of SAVAGE GARDEN put one in mind of the very best of Michael Connelly. The writing here is lyrical and lovely and, most importantly, it evokes the mean streets of Los Angeles that Hamilton writes so well.
In her fourth novel, Hamilton tells the story of a gifted and driven playright and his old love, who is also the lead actress in his newest play. When the actress goes missing on opening night, the police aren't even convinced foul play has been involved. Though Eve not only suspects foul play, she's afraid her own lover might have something to do with it.
Makes me want to read the first three in series.......2006-05-31
Great read. It took me back to the heart of Los Angeles where I used to live. Interesting and diverse characters, lots of action and a fast pace make this a book you won't want to put down. Oh, and a short, but smoking, love scene in a .... but I don't want to give away any details.
Another great mystery from Denise Hamilton.......2006-03-21
Over her first three books, the gifted Denise Hamilton earned a reputation as one of the brightest new stars in the mystery world. Her series featuring L.A. Times reporter Eve Diamond has featured some of the best writing the genre has seen.
Her latest, "Savage Garden," continues that trend. The plot is another rich one for Hamilton, this time featuring Eve participating in the hunt for an actress missing on the eve of her triumphant return to the stage.
In her pursuit of the story, Eve is paired with an upstart reporter recently hired as part of the newspaper's affirmative action program. Eve is wary of the aggressive rookie's motives and ethics, especially when she steals a scoop out from under Eve.
With its combination of sharp characters, crisp prose and hot-button topics such as race and journalistic ethics, "Savage Garden" rises above the level of an ordinary detective novel to become a vibrant, powerful and relevant story.
"He had a history that was not ours. He had secrets".......2005-07-06
The sassy, brazen journalist Eve Diamond is back in yet another sensational thriller from Denise Hamilton. Again using the sun drenched streets of Los Angeles as her backdrop, Hamilton drops her heroine into the thick of murder, obsession, jealousy, and all-consuming passion in a story that has all the epic qualities of a Greek tragedy.
In Savage Garden, the action - and there's plenty of it - takes place throughout this vast, diverse city: from the inner city suburb of Echo Park and the barrios of East L.A. to the exclusivity of Malibu, and the serenity of the Angeles National Forest, Hamilton incorporates her trademark knack for relentless and unyielding suspense.
Employing a terse, tense first person narrative, Savage Garden, homes in on local stage diva, Catarina Velosi. Catarina has inexplicably gone missing just before her debut performance in the new play Our Lady of the Barrio. Alfonso Reventon, who wrote the play for her is concerned, so Silvio, his best friend, offers to go to her apartment to check on her. Of course, the ever- curious Eve decides to tag along, in the hope of a good story.
Catarina's apartment is empty, but the couple discovers bloodstains on the pillow of her bed and also on the open window. It's a disturbing scene and Eve immediately expects that the disappearance involves foul play. When Catarina's body is later found, the case becomes personal for Eve, for the police believe Silvio knows something because of his past relationship with the victim. Eve begins to wonder what secrets Silvio had with both Catarina and Alfonso; the life he had before he met Eve.
Eve soon discovers, with the help of her arch nemesis, the smart, and very ambitious African-American reporter Felice Morgan, that there were a number of people who were quite upset with Catarina: There's Marisela, Alfonso's neurotic wife, who changes like quicksilver from pathetic drunk to wronged wife to vulnerable little girl. She's a troubled, unhappy woman, who seems to be behaving like the real actress, moving fluidly and lithely among many different roles.
Suspicion also falls on Alfonso, for it is soon revealed that he has been having a passionate affair with Catarina. Alfonso, who has used his barrio roots as a badge of authenticity for his plays - gaining fame and fortune on the backs of the lives he has exploited - saw Catarina's unmistakable talent, eventually offering her, her big break. And what of Catarina's drama coach Victoria Givens? Victoria steadily used the make-believe of theater to seduce wayward teens from their grim realities while she basked in the glories of her star pupil.
Escaping childhood horrors through the stage, Catarina revisited the barrio each night tearing her heart open for adoring fans while keeping her real life hidden. She was a tortured, hard-bitten soul, and Eve, while fanatically trying to put together the patchwork quilt of her life, discovers secrets and lies that have long been buried.
But Eve must also contend with the duplicitous nature of Felice who has a tendency to make things up. Can Eve trust Felice not to steal her stories? If she trusts Felice and ends up wrong about the younger reporter's authenticity, she could also get herself killed. Eve, however, knows one thing for sure, Felice is an enigmatic reporter from the wrong side of the tracks and she's trying effortlessly to shrug off her own skin and slip into a newer more glamorous one.
Savage Garden is also about the somewhat hard-won journey of LA's disenfranchised Latino community. The Latino characters in this novel have tried desperately to pull themselves out of poverty, and the barrio dangers of crime, drugs, gangs and violence. It's just so unfortunate that Catarina and Alfonso have risen to the level of superstars, only to be torn apart in the end by the dark secrets of their past.
Hamilton writes with a confident rigor, portraying an LA that inexplicably turns everyone into actors, pining for the role that they just can't have. It's a city where beauty is always more exquisite when backlit by horror, and where the sublime is entwined with the profane. Betrayal, blood, murder, the corruption of money, and also the inevitability of fate are at the heart of this exciting, exhilarating, and bracing murder mystery. Mike Leonard July 05.

This is a kids book.......2006-05-26
I bought this book thinking it was an in-depth look at the band and the stories behind the break-up...but it is more of a superficial collection of info. It was definitely interesting, but be aware that the book is aimed at children, and won't really give you massive insight into the guys. :)
Very cute little book!.......2005-08-23
I thought this book was very informative and thorough. It's a little short, but then it seems to be aimed at kids. I enjoyed it very much, and it's neat to have around and have friends read it who don't know anything about my favorite band.
